Thoughts on mermaid Magnus au

my immediate thought is “magnus and maia brotp!” because like yeah? yeah? maia? marine biologist? magnus? mermaid? yeah? yeah? yeah! so like maia is this aspiring marine biologist who lives by the seaside and she’s always trying to figure out new ways to watch the ocean from afar, since she’s kind of scared of the ocean, you know, maybe especially because she’s a marine biologist and she knows all the weird stuff that lives in there.. anyway she eventually ends up seeing magnus because she was out there staring at the ocean wishing that she’d get to courage to at least snorkel dive or something and oops there is some guy coming out of the water and he DEFINITELY has a tail even if it transforms into legs when he’s on the ground or like smth idk and she’s like “what” and magnus is like “uh” and she’s like “uh” and they’re like “uh”

anyway cue magnus freaking out because obviously a mundane shouldn’t know about mermaids and what the hell does he DO now but maia is just like “wow. that would... solve a lot of my problems” and magnus is all confused and she explains to him that she loves the ocean and wants to be a biologist one day but she’s terrified of the sea, and magnus is like “ah. well. you have to be born a mermaid” and she chuckles like “bummer” and he’s like “...and you’re not freaking out about this” 

so you know, she promises she won’t tell anyone and who would believe her anyway? and he ends up sitting down beside her and she asks questions about what living in the ocean is like and stuff and he answers and eventually the sun is going up and he goes “ah. better go back home while i won’t be seen” and she teases him that he’s not that good at not being seen 

anyway! so the next night they see each other again and she asks him even more questions and he even like, brings some stuff for her to see and shows it to her? you know? and she’s super excited about it and it’s hella cute

and it goes on for like a week or so until one day magnus brings raphael with him (did you REALLY think i wouldn’t bring him into this) because before he wasn’t sure if he could trust maia but after a while has passed and she clearly hasn’t told a soul and is obviously just interested in seeing magnus’ aquatic friends and hearing his stories, he figures it’s safe to bring him too. he just wants to introduce his new friend to his boy and it’s cute

raphael is understandably a little scared because there magnus is, befriending mundanes, and they fucking know how dangerous that can be but magnus is a stubborn unstoppable asshole when he wants to so he figures it’s best if he knows about it than if he doesn’t. but him and maia get along fine. eventually he ends up pointing at the sky and he says “i’ve always been fascinated by that, you know?”

and maia is like “what?” and raphael is like “the stars. we grow up in the deep sea, so we don’t really see them. what you call the ‘sky’, to me, has always been the surface. but then when i broke out... there was more. this huge, untouchable thing, a surface over the surface. and it’s so beautiful” and maia pauses for a while and she’s like “you know, if you are willing to teach me what you know about the deep sea, i can teach you about the stars” 

and magnus huffs like “and what do i get in return?” and she’s like “what do you want to learn about?” and he promptly goes, “the surface”

because magnus is a curious guy and he loves to learn and he’s always wanted to learn about the surface, but he only tried once and he was too scared that he would be found out, especially as he had no idea what mundane culture was like. and maia’s like well that’s easy to solve, i can show you around” and raphael is like no and magnus is like yes and maia is like yes and raphael is like then i’ll come too because he’s not letting magnus just wander around with mundanes

maia is like “it sounds like you are the papa bear in the relationship” and magnus is like “oh, don’t be mistaken my dear, if it were the other way around i wouldn’t let him” and raphael huffs but well, fine

so the following night they hang out some (i’m guessing maia has to bring them both clothes?) and maia shows magnus the town and magnus is in awe because wow there is so much stuff going on at nighttime. he never knew because the beach is relatively secluded, which is why he never expected to see maia there

the next night it’s raphael and maia’s turn to satisfy their curiosity so she teaches him the basics of the constellations and tells him a bit about astrology and like, a basic history of beliefs surrounding the stars and stuff like that. you know? Mundane Sky 101. in return raphael starts teaching her about the deep sea fishes and the mermaid’s knowledge of them as well. and they kinda bond because they are both fascinated by things that are out of their reach in many ways? and it’s like sweet and they smile at each other and stuff

then the next night it’s magnus’ turn, and it goes back and forth like this for a while. until one day magnus tells maia that he wants to visit during the day? see what it’s like and all. and she’s like well okay, i suppose you can... sleep at my place on friday and then we go out on saturday so i can have the day to show you around. and he’s like what is saturday. but they make a deal

raphael lowkey hates it during daytime because it’s so... bright and full of people (autistic raphael babey!) and noise and just, very different from what he’s used to, so he feels a little overwhelmed by it all. but magnus loves it. and it’s during one of their day adventures that magnus meets alec, because let’s be real, alec is just not a nighttime guy

and idk how exactly this would go but they hit it off and like you know. also at this point magnus knows quite a bit about mundane life so he can pretend swiftly and he’s always been smart and good at socializing so they’re like, on equal ground, just throwing this out there. and they get along well and soon magnus is flirting and, to raphael’s horror, alec is responding, so this is something that they all deal with now. magnus makes up something about being from the city and only coming on the weekends to explain why he isn’t around any other day and saturdays kind of become “magnus is going to see alec” time and raphael and maia are kind of just chilling on the corner of the cafe or something, talking

and there’s gonna be some coming out as a literal mermaid angst involved here but idk. maybe to be extra cliche alec goes visit maia saturday night and they get there just in time to see raphael and magnus going into the water and swimming away or something lmao. anyway alec is understandably shocked by the whole thing as his whole world has been tipped off its axis and he’s kind of freaking out but not because he’s like, afraid or something, just because it’s a lot to wrap his head around

so like idk the next morning alec waits for them at the beach with maia? or something? lmao and magnus almost has a panic attack but he tells him that he’s already seen and i guess from there alec becomes magnus’ guide to the mundane world? since he now officially knows. maia and raphael are not gonna leave the two of them together yet but now that he knows he has so many date ideas, things magnus has never seen before, you know. and magnus falls all that much harder because alec just... accepted that and wanted to show him things and it’s cute

and also maia and raphael get to spend more nights alone at the beach talking and looking at the stars and maybe raphael gets to show her things and it’s also cute. and they all fall in love and this is irrelevant but i love the mental image that magnus has a golden tail and raphael has a silvery tail, simply because the colors suit them respectively (even aesthetically, esp gold for magnus) and there is that whole... you know. gold and silver thing. idk i just love this

anyway magnus and alec start dating and so do maia and raphael and everyone is happy and cute and i guess magnus starts spending more and more time as a mundane and no idea how this would happen but fuck it lmao maybe maia and raphael study together and get into college and he gets to actually learn astronomy and she does groundbreaking research with maybe a little help as a marine biologist and idk what’s going on anymore this lore is a mess the end

ok im loving autistic maia/maiaphael but friendship ended with autistic/adhd solidarity malec. my new best friend is autistic/adhd solidarity magnus&maia brotp!! possible thots: no idea how this go, but something (a spell to breathe underwater? a charm to help selkies? a special ocean potion ingredient?) magnus is hyperfixating on overlaps w maias special interest marine biology & just them in a booth in takis or hunters moon very passionately talking back and forth & sharing their interests 🥺

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh my god okay but the spell to breathe/be able to see underwater maia would be ALL about that shit. there’s probably even a spell to make sure they don’t get wet like if they are uncomfortable with it sensorially lmao but anyway the point is, maia would basically be able to go swimming and see everything she fucking wants without having to worry about a thing!! especially since if i remember correctly she was kinda scared of going into the sea (she mentioned that “if i’m very adventurous, i might put an ankle” in that flashback) but like with this magnus gets to bring her underwater and let her see everything she wants live, and free from the possibly sensorially yucky sensation of being in the sea (i for one can’t stand it lmao) 

or even if she absolutely doesn’t want to go in no problem because magnus can just use a spell to show her what HE sees! maybe raphael even offers to go in and they can use like seelie rings or some shit so she can be like “omg can you check that reef for me? more to the left?? OH MY GOD I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU JUST FOUND THAT I-” and she’s so excited about it and raphael is also happy because look when was the last time he swam? and i’m pretty sure he never got to see marine life up close so like, this rules actually. even if i think he would have a kidna low energy to keep going, he enjoys it, and he’s more than happy to get to hear the way maia is so excited about that

anyWAY my point is, one way or the other the idea has her ABSOLUTELY STOKED and just immensely excited and just aaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the two of them meeting up at the jade wolf to talk about this and magnus is like in full lecture mode sharing graphics and his research and explaining everything to her in detail, and maia is just vibrating with excitement, and raphael is just watching them both with the fondest smile because his dad and his gf get along so well and they both look so happy and the sun is hitting his face and this is heaven. he doesn’t give a lot of input because it’s more Their Thing and he’s happy to just watch as they both nerd out to their heart’s content (lmao maybe catarina and madzie are also there? and catarina can help since she is a healer and understands magic that affects bodily functions better than magnus. and madzie is also a little genius cuz i said so so she also helps, even though she alternates between giving input and just zoning out and doing her own thing. but anyway my point with this is they’re all nerding out and raphael is mostly watching and feeling blessed and also giving madzie attention while the rest of them work on this project) 

and they just talk and talk and nerd out about it for hours and catarina and raphael have to be the Responsible Ones reminding them to eat and shit, but it’s the sweetest possible thing and they’re just so excited and also maia and magnus would work SO WELL together okay! and they are both so smart and know so much about what they’re talking about and just aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa i love this!!!

i actually thought about that! the whole being on the run thing, this whole squad truly shares the braincell. i was thinking yeah Evil Dictator Asmodeus and magnus having been shunned for trying to kick him out/end his oppressive rule and raphael having always been sort of an outcast and having already bonded with magnus over their shared interest in things that are outside of the mermaid world - especially, in magnus’ case, because it was like... this clean world that was free of his abuse, you know - so raphael and him still meet up. and hey maybe raphael is also trying to plot an uprising because well it’s canon! so he’s kinda like magnus’ inside man. oh no i’m actually pretty into this

so yeah magnus has been shunned and that only gives him more reason to try out that one day and go to the shore and he ends up being seen by maia and well that’s a fuckup! but it turns out great. and slowly but surely they manage to overthrow asmodeus and hell, end the monarchy because fuck that, [BABY I’M AN ANARCHIST STARTS PLAYING AT MAXIMUM VOLUME] and also like again look magnus is a great leader but he deserves a break from all that weight okay. let him see the world and be with his husband and his son and his son’s girlfriend in peace. blease

and SPLASH FIGHTS would be really cute. i particularly imagine raphael and maia doing that when he’s still easing maia into the whole ocean thing you know, like she won’t get in the water but she will maybe climb over a rock and put her feet every once in a while. so to tease her he keeps throwing water on her and being like “see? it’s wet already. you can put a knee in there” and she’s like “fuck off” and kicks some water in his face and he laughs and soon they’re having a splash fight. raphael has an unfair advantage of course since he’s fully immersed in the water and maia only gets to kick some but it actually does help her feel a little more confident? especially because like DICKS OUT FOR AUTISTIC MAIA and getting used to the sensation of sea water on her skin helps her feel a little less uneasy about getting there, you know, one less foreign thing to worry about. and just odadosajd they are so cutee

and YES mermaid cat!! i know the obvious thing would be for her scales to be blue but i just really like yellow or purple??? yellow just looks gorgeous on dark skin so she would be absolutely stunning no one would be able to do it like her, and purple just seems to suit her? idk. but anyway yeah she is also helping them with their overthrowing asmodeus plans but she is closer to him in like the palace or smth idk and so she can’t go out and see them as much? but like yeah duahdsuaihdsauha aaaaaa

this is nowhere near specific and you damn well know it, anon. i appreciate u trying to find an excuse to throw coffee shop aus everywhere, tho. keep doing the lord's work even if i will inevitably twist the prompt

Magnus works at a small, local coffee shop as a barista. It's not exactly his #1 job choice, but it pays better than big chain coffee shops and he needs that to pay rent now that he officially left his abusive father's home for good. Also, he is kind of a coffee enthusiast and the owner, Ragnor, lets him go wild with making up new drinks and ingredients, as long as he still does his job.

All in all it's a good job and he considers the old fart and the other barista, maia, to be like family. Ragnor frequently gives them coffee and Maia constantly teases him about being a "coffee scientist" whenever she catches him thoughtfully drinking from a cup and scribbling notes on his notepad, like some ancient being

His recipes are good, though, and he knows exactly where to get the best coffee beans for the best price. So their drinks are good, affordable, and can please everyone from the traditional "black coffee no sugar" exec to the teenager who wants more of a milkshake than actual coffee

As a result, the shop thrives, gets more popular, and gets more clients. So Ragnor decides to hire a new barista to help. Because he's secretly a sweetheart, he ends up hiring this broke college kid who just moved into town to get away from his kinda toxic family and has nowhere to go - and also doesnt have a single ounce of experience as a barista

It's not surprising; both Magnus and Maia share similar stories, with some abusive exes to spice up the mix, not to mention racism, biphobia, and, in Magnus case, male behavior standarts keeping most opportunities closed for them. So they're cool with that. Even if it means Magnus will have to be the one to teach him, because 1- Ragnor is a dick and assigned him to be Alec's special "tutor" as retribution for Magnus calling him "an old, heart of butter bastard"; 2- he's the one who's best qualified to teach him since he knows a lot about coffee and coffee making anyway; 3- Maia has no patience

Quick detour just to say that i love the maia/magnus brotp opportunities this gives. While Magnus is more of a coffee scientist as she puts it, Maia has an almost instictive understanding of drink making. Where Magnus is soft, she's fierce, and they make one hell of a team and are good at balancing one another. They bond over their experiences with abuse; while Magnus' has made him afraid to put his foot down and say what he wants and prioritize himself, Maia's has made her particularly wary of people and even less willing to take anyone's bullshit, and both of these coping mechanisms have their own effects on their psyche, and they're able to talk openly to each other about it. Maia is kind of protective of Magnus and vice-versa, though the way they protect each other is very different. They have an easy companionship and bantering dynamic that's easygoing and cute, theyre both passionate about their interests (Maia loves marine biology and even if Magnus doesnt know much about it he loves listening to her talk about it) and just generally have that kind of relationship where just smiling at each other makes a tough day seem lighter. Also Magnus loves making Maia laugh. Maia blatantly refuses to laugh at any of his self-deprecating jokes, tho, which has considerably diminished the amount of times he makes them

Anyway Alec comes in for his first day and Magnus is like [REDACTED] because shit this man is cute. Maia notices immediately and from then on the teasing doesn't stop

He's quick to recover, tho, and suddenly he's all smooth again (Maia says he's perfected his customer service persona to horror movie levels), quick to introduce himself and Maia to Alec and explain that he'll be training Alec for the next few weeks or so. He gives him a tour of the shop, explains the basics, and immediately launches into his slightly extra More Serious Than Strictly Necessary course on the makings and workings of coffee, from bean selection to ideal temperature and the chemistry behind the cooking.

This absolute dork even had a small table with some coffee made from different kinds of beans so Alec could taste them and learn the difference and Engage with the profession or some shit

Maia just rolls her eyes, thankful that she had prior experience before getting this job and didnt have to go through this

The first thing he learns about Alec: Alec doesn't like coffee. This is not a setback. Many people dont like coffee, but that's because they're used to regular powdered coffee instead of making it from the bean. Because the beans in powdered coffee arent previously selected, they are roasted harder than they should, so any beans that might have gone bad wont spoil the taste or make you sick. As a result, the coffee is way too bitter and doesn't have a discernible taste. He explains all of this enthusiastically to a slightly overwhelmed Alec, and gets on to making him try the samples so he can feel the difference.

Here's the second thing he learns about Alec: Alec doesn't feel the difference

Despair. Horror. Offense.

Alec even kind of chuckles and goes "sorry" at the face he makes, and a not-pouting Magnus goes on with the planned explanation on bean selection

Third thing he learns about Alec: he's a quick study. Everything he lacks in sensibility to the amazing world of bean juice, he makes up for in his careful attentiveness to the instructions. He is also a strict recipe-follower and makes sure he always uses the exact amounts required. He's an absolute perfectionist. He listens to Magnus' explanations on how to know if the taste is right, to look for color and texture of the mix. Magnus tries his simple coffees and only needs a few corrections to send him on the right path

The first time Alec makes him something more complicated to try (per his request) Magnus wants to die

It's so good

Scratch that, it's perfect

This soulless motherfucker doesn't even like coffee and this is the single best version of whatever crazy frapuccino shit they're making magnus has ever tried

He kind of bursts from the kitchen (?) all like MAIA YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS just in time to interrupt her chatting with this redhead new customer with shiny eyes. Maia is leaning all the way across the counter. What is this

Maia agrees that it's very good but again he's not as passionate about coffee and Magnus just interrupted what would have been a really smooth number-giving move so she's not feeling all that generous

Alec just laughs at that. His eyes are shining with amusement and he's very, very pleased that Magnus likes his stuff

It's not a big secret, really; mixing drinks is kind of like patisserie in the sense that the measures need to be exact to achieve the best taste and texture. He follows the recipe to a fault, it turns out good. That's why he's better at the more complicated, instagram-y drinks than the simple coffee types

Alec "graduates" his training pretty soon after that and Ragnor is very pleased

He gets along well with both Magnus and Maia, even if he's more quiet and sometimes catches himself just laughing at the two of them interact; their friendship is something else. But he also gets to hear a "shut up" from Maia after not saying absolutely anything when the redhead walks in again the very next day

The redhead always comes in a little late in the morning, so its always slow. As a result, they get to pretend to be minding their own business as they hear the two of them chat and oof is the romantic tension between them something. Maia glares at them once the girl - Clary - leaves every time, but it doesn't stop them

Soon Maia is calling them "no-good gossiping grandmas" because of the way Magnus and Alec will go to the back and pretend to be making something while they keep a whispered running commentary on what the girls are talking about. This quickly turns into some sort of race to see who can make the other break and laugh out loud. Neither of them ever do (they are trying to be discreet and Maia would kill them) but oftentimes they need to cover their mouths with their hands and playfully slap each other for the teasing

Clary doesn't even realize she's the reason; she kind of just thinks they are constantly flirting on the back and briefly wonders how they havent been fired when all they do is whisper and make eyes at each other

Not that she has any room to talk when she's late to work everyday because she keeps cracking jokes with the cute curly haired barista with the most beautiful lopsided smile who always makes her laugh and tells her about her day while she drinks her coffee. She's lucky her work starts at 10 so she can go in a little later and doesnt have to be there during rush hours, but still

She doesnt even like coffee, she walked in one day cuz she was really tired and then just kept coming in the hopes that the barista would make a move on her (shes not gonna do it herself, at least not in her workplace. She doesn't want to make her uncomfortable and it's still unclear whether the girl is flirting or if shes just really nice)

At some point she and Maia even start sharing knowing looks to Alec and Magnus and laughing at them. They don't even notice, because their designated Making Fun Of Maia time turned into just cracking jokes at each other way too quickly. They don't even remember there are other people there

Maia does finally ask clary out eventually. She wasn't exactly nervous about doing it, it's more that she enjoyed their little routine. But enough is enough, and when their routine starts involving Clary giving her a quick kiss before placing her order, well, it just makes it better

Magnus and Alec coo every time

Eventually Maia snaps all like "why are you guys the one poking fun at me when im the one who made a move instead of being a coward"

Magnus is all like "Whatever could she possibly mean??"

It dawns on him when hes closing up the next day and Alec has already left. He has a crush on Alec. Oh god. Oh fuck

Maia helpfully says "idiot" and leaves

Some Magnus being very nervous and overthinking his relationship with Alec who's all like ???????? about this

Alec goes to his sister about his new crush who suddenly started acting weird and izzy is all like "stop trying to guess what he's thinking because you're terrible at this. Just tell them how you feel" and Alec is like okay

He asks Magnus out

Everyone is happy and gay idk the end
