Week 6

This week we discussed the key causes of crime in urban cities and referenced WJW's broken windows theory. I'm currently reading Tipping Point by Malcom Gladwell, and coincidentally, I just read yesterday the chapter where he discusses WJW and his theory and how it applies in real life. Gladwell discussed how in NYC in the 70s, there was a taskforce to pay attention to small crimes so that it can send a message to petty criminals and stop bigger crime from spreading. This was very inline with what we discussed in class this semester regarding the spread of crime. One tactic the NYC transit police used was making sure any graffiti on the trains were cleaned off before the next day and could not be put in the rotation. This helped discourage children from writing all over the cars in the middle of the night because it was gone the next morning. All their work was for nothing. This led to a decrease in graffiti. This is all part of WJW's theory and I thought it was really cool seeing it talked about outside of class. Super interesting, would highly recommend reading or listening to Malcom Gladwell talk about this.

A nice poster for an event. For the play by Dario Fo called Accidental Death of an Anarchist. At the Mark Taper Forum 1982 / 1983 season. Poster art is by Paul Conrad and the poster was designed by Elizabeth Kooker

Poster shows slight age, and some paper age spots, but otherwise is in very good condition. Collectible. Paper measures about 14 by 22 inches.

Poster is about a staged play: Accidental Death of an Anarchist (Italian title: Morte accidentale di un anarchico) is the most internationally recognised play by Dario Fo, recipient of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Literature. Considered a classic of twentieth-century theatre, it has been performed across the world in more than 40 countries, including Argentina, Chile, the United Kingdom, India, Romania, South Africa and South Korea.

Plot summary

The events of the play itself, however, are fictional. The play opens with Inspector Bertozzo interrogating The Maniac on the third floor of the police station. The Maniac constantly outsmarts the dim-witted Bertozzo and, when Bertozzo leaves the room, intercepts a phone call from Inspector Pissani. The phone call lets the Maniac know that a judge is due at the police station to investigate the interrogation and death of the anarchist. The Maniac decides to impersonate the judge, and successfully does so. He gets the police to re-enact the events, in the actual fourth floor room, and also involves a woman Journalist who is trying to probe the events. The play ends with two alternative endings, one with Feletti (the Journalist) leaving the four policemen to be bombed and in the second, Feletti uncuffs the men who in turn handcuff her to the window frame leaving her to die. The Maniac then leaves the audience to decide which ending they prefer.
