SUBLIME CINEMA #678 - THE INNOCENTS
The 60's creepiest film has some of the best black and white photography ever done, beautifully rendered on Cinemascope. The images are glimmering in layers of light.
The movie has an artful quality that was so ahead of its time, which makes it stand apart from the standard Hammer horror flicks people were being fed in the 50's and 60's.

In the early 1980s, a musical and cultural phenomenon emerged that would forever shape the landscape of popular music. This phenomenon was known as New Wave, and it brought with it a fresh and innovative approach to music, fashion, and art. New Wave was not just a genre; it was a state of mind, a rebellion against the established norms of the 1970s and a celebration of individuality and…

What I’ve learned from watching British films from the late 50s/early 60s...
Young men from the north are angry. They are not sure what they are angry about but when asked it is “everything.”
One thing they are definitely angry about is class because everyone on all levels wants them to fail! Or at least shut up about class.
Most jobs are dead ends including factory AND office work. Because at the end of working, you die. Every time.
The only way to deal with your anger is to drink a lot, get beat up, and have lots of sex, preferably with more than one women (sequentially, not together).
Ideally, one of your lovers is already married.
You do not want to get married because like jobs, marriage ends IN DEATH. But sometimes you have to, either to get ahead, because you’re dumb enough to fall in love, or because you got her pregnant.
Everyone is always getting pregnant and no one ever means to and it’s always a huge disaster and yet no one ever considers this for a moment until the day the girl says, “I’m seven weeks late.”
Domestic abuse is very common and possibly the only response to being so angry all the time. Unclear to me whether the films mean this as a warning or a statement of fact or the natural consequence of having men and women in the same house.
Women are central to and essential for the life of a man, but have no actual personality or function in the world outside that.
Despite one’s anger, work/alcoholism/marriage are basically inescapable realities so it’s really just a matter of time and how long you want to be angry about it.
I know I sound flippant above,  but for the record I’m not at all flippant about the subject matter here; any slight edge to my depiction is more about how prevalent these themes are so far in my kitchen sink genre exploration. What it really demonstrates is how salient these questions and attendant angst were to writers and directors in this post-war period in England, and presumably to audiences as well. And because this is a Beatles blog, and let’s be real that’s a big part of WHY I’m watching all of these, I think it’s really interesting to think about these narratives in the context of how the boys grew up, the way culture was changing, and the social realities they were slotting into/fighting against/subverting/prey to. I’m not saying they crack the code or anything but I don’t think this depiction of northern, working-class life and the existential angst created by the position these men were in is irrelevant.

Love for Richard Lester
The amazing director Richard Lester (Richard Lester Liebman, b. 1932) is still with us, though he hasn’t directed for 30 years, and his career hasn’t been honestly vital for 40. The reason why he stepped away is tragic and understandable, but we wish there had been many more films from him all the same. Lester was a brilliant Jewish kid from Philly, the son of Elliott Lester (1893-1951), who…

honestly they were disrespectful to themselves. they let it get completely out of hand for a MONTH. the palace did this to themselves
yeah... look nobody will get me to agree with people being like 'conspiracy theorists have gone too far' 'you've all been disrespectful towards catherine' 'there was never a reason for any of this' 'you should be ashamed for what you said' etc etc etc. because like... first of all, again, i hold zero respect for these people. why the fuck should i. but even if i did... it's their own fucking fault???? the fuck?????? lmao?????????? literally only a handful of people gave a fuck until that doctored photo. and then they just kept making it worse. and i'm sorry but i actually don't think they're entitled to their privacy when their entire job is pr and they're blatantly lying in all their pr shit like ? what else are you good for lol. but then that also makes me angry because as much as i don't like kate for several reasons i'm still a bit genuinely offended at her behalf for how they've handled all this shit.. like making her take the blame for the photoshop (i hope for her sake it was her own idea, because otherwise........), having her appear alone in the video announcing her cancer (why tf isn't william there when she's talking about how he's by her side lmao), the general just lack of giving a fuck about anything whilst the world went wild theorising about her.... i can't tell whether she's taking the fall to cover for something else or if they're just all absolute assholes ?? again like. i don't like kate middleton. for many reasons. but i like william and charles a whole lot less and it's infuriating that they're making me feel like she's been wronged lmao

A Taste of Honey
The movie. Not the song. Since @inspiteallthedanger told me I don’t need to weigh in on the song. [Edit to clarify: because, in her opinion, no one needs to weigh in on the song, because it is bad. I thought it was funny.]
As you may remember if you’ve been following me, I’ve been watching a bunch of British New Wave films from the late 50s/early 60s, also known as “kitchen sink dramas” and “angry young man” films. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, so far they are mostly about young men from the working classes who are caught between entrenched class dynamics and the shifting mores of British society. They mostly get really drunk and hit people and get people pregnant accidentally.
So it’s refreshing that A Taste of Honey follows a young woman who is also angry and stuck and makes horrible choices. Written by an actual woman (Shelagh Delaney) as a play when she was 19, it follows a schoolgirl about to graduate who is grappling with an unloving mother, an accidental pregnancy, and generally having no place in the world and no real ability to navigate her own or anyone else’s emotions. It’s notable for addressing unwanted pregnancy, abortion, interracial relationships, and homosexuality.
It’s refreshing, but also difficult, as Jo seems completely justified in her hatred of her mother who has never shown her any affection and chooses a new husband over her, but also quickly follows in her footsteps making all the same mistakes. In that way, it’s very evocative of generational patterns and the difficulty of getting out of those cycles when one has no other model. Jo is pregnant and doesn’t want to be, the father is gone from her life and she’s not sure she even wanted him, and she’s going to lash out homophobically at the only person willing to stand by her and give her love and affection because he’s the only person in her life ‘weaker’ than she is.
It’s a really interesting film, and it’s interesting that the Beatles covered the theme song, but mostly because the theme song actually has nothing to do with the film and doesn’t appear even over the credits--it was written as an instrumental for the Broadway production of the play, and later given lyrics and covered by several people. So on that front, it’s difficult to connect any of the themes of the film with the fact our guys performed it.
Anyway, it’s an interesting entry into the genre/movement, because it entirely takes the female point of view and yet demonstrates how the angry young woman (mostly used as a prop in the other movies) is dealing with the exact same stresses and social ills. It’s just that her options and consequences are very different.
