f1 drivers as tracks from the tortured poets department: a very abridged and very biased list.
DISCLAIMER: this is all for fun and should be taken very lightheartedly. Not all drivers were included, but I am open to suggestions as well as constructive criticism.
Without further ado:
CHARLES LECLERC - I Can Do It With A Broken Heart
Absolutely suicidal lyrics that should be mildly concerning but all in all very upbeat and makes you want to run around doing side quests. Such as write an album, or open an ice cream shop. I'm thinking this is specifically 2022 Charles when he trusted no one at Ferrari, or mid-2023 when everyone was calling him washed and calling for his teammate to be n1 driver, and then he proceeded to put it on pole in a tractor multiple times and still hasn't finished outside the top 5 since. Either way, I am looking forward how this song will hit when Charles gets his eventual championship.
MAX VERSTAPPEN - Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?
This one is for Mad Max, who was thrust onto the world stage as an untested young prodigy at seventeen, who was called too young and immature and proceeded to win a GP upon debut in a top team, who was called Crashtappen from 2015-2019 and labelled as overly aggressive to his detriment, who was painted as a villain by every media outlet and documentary and DTS episode, who said "fuck the haters" and won championships anyway, who broke records, and made his own national anthem the expected song for every podium. A driver who is fast approaching greatest of all time status, for his win streaks alone. A driver that most others now just shrug about, because there's no shame in not choosing to fight the inevitable.
LEWIS HAMILTON - So Long, London
Ah, the heart-wrenching track of letting go of your long-term British relationship that doesn't serve you anymore. So many lyrics from here I could apply to the rumoured break down of amicable relations between Lewis and Mercedes, the team he won six championships with. From "My spine split from carrying us up the hill" to "I didn't opt in to be your odd man out. I founded the club she's heard great things about" to "you say I abandoned the ship But I was going down with it. My white-knuckle dying grip. Holding tight to your quiet resentment". Honestly, I could copy and paste all the lyrics here and they would apply to Lewis' Merc swan song. Taylor wrote "you swore that you loved me but where were the clues, I died on the altar waiting for the proof." about Abu Dhabi 2021.
CARLOS SAINZ - The Prophecy
Carlos has been delivering some of the best drives of his career this season, but it doesn't matter because he's not the chosen one, he's not il predestinato, he's not the son of Maranello. No matter what he does, he would never have kept that Ferrari seat over the mythos of Charles Leclerc. "Let it once be me. Who do I have to speak to, to redo the prophecy?"
LANDO NORRIS - Guilty as Sin?
Specifically given for half-flirting with Red Bull for most of last season, only to shake himself out of it and re-sign with McLaren, but I have one eye on him, not entirely sure he's given up on the Red Bull daydream, and Red Bull have been open about wanting to get him, if they can. It's all on Lando to stay faithful.
OSCAR PIASTRI - Fresh Out the Slammer
Piastrigate continues to inspire and compel an entire generation of F1 fans, and as such should form the basis of Oscar's song selection. What was the promises that Alpine made him, if not "Gray and blue and fights and tunnels Handcuffed to the spell I was under For just one hour of sunshine"
FERNANDO ALONSO - Florida!!!
Florida!!! is a big and powerful song about being a Shakespearean villain with a History and questionable morals and motives. Who is that if not Fernando Alonso? "Tell me I'm despicable, say it's unforgivable." "Is that a bad thing to say in a song?"
LANCE STROLL - But Daddy I Love Him
Yeah this one is self-indulgent and too good to resist. He's singing it about Fernando btw. Next.
DANIEL RICCIARDO - Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus
Someone is getting that Red Bull seat next year, and every name is on the list except Daniel Ricciardo. "As the decade played us for fools, you saw my bones out with somebody new." Who knows what would have happened if Daniel hadn't left Red Bull, all those years ago? "Just say you loved me the way you were" Oof. We could spend years living in the What Ifs of it all.

On This Day in F1: March 22nd
Present: Australia Day 1
History: 1992 Mexican Grand Prix
March 22nd, 2024 marked the start of the Australian race weekend with the first two practice sessions.
The big story of the day is with Williams and their decision to have Alex Albon run Logan Sargeant’s car for the rest of the weekend after Albon crashed in FP1. Due to not having a 3rd chassis they could make for Albon and his original chassis being too damaged for repair, team principal James Vowles announced that Sargeant will not be racing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Statements from Vowles, Albon, and Sargeant)
Considering that Sargeant was not the one to crash, the decision is being widely seen as unfair and damaging to any morale building within the Williams team. A greater issue is why Williams wouldn’t take precautions to have a third chassis in a race that was filled with carnage last year. The ramifications of this decision are certainly something that we could see as the season progresses - not only for how it impacts Sargeant's confidence but also for the parts allotment allowed for Albon.
_______
On March 22, 1992, Formula One hosted the Mexican Grand Prix at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. It was the second race of the 1992 season and heavily dominated by British driver, Nigel Mansell.
The 1992 Mexican Grand Prix was in turmoil long before its running on March 22nd. Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez's reputation for being a very bumpy circuit and Mexico City's decline with overpopulation and pollution was considered to be a bad look for Formula One.
Approximately a month prior, Mexico City was under a smog alert due to the dangerous levels of air pollution - the level of air pollution was reported as triple the US standard and four times what California permits. Due to this alert, there were restrictions on the usage of heavy motorized equipment which led to the delay in paving troublesome sections of the race track.
On race day, Nigel Mansell led every lap and finished the race 12.971 seconds ahead of his teammate Riccardo Patrese.
21.429 seconds behind Mansell, Michael Schumacher in the Benetton finished in third place. This was the first of Schumacher's 155 podiums in Formula One.
Of the 30 entrants:
4 drivers did not qualify (including Giovanna Amati - the most recent woman to attempt qualifying for an F1 GP)
13 drivers retired without classifying
1 driver finished 4 laps down from the race leader
2 drivers finished 3 laps down from the race leader
2 drivers finished 2 laps down from the race leader
4 drivers finished 1 lap down from the race leader
4 drivers completed all 69 laps
Tumblr media
The 1992 Mexican Grand Prix was the last one hosted in Mexico until 2015 after the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez was revised.

ARTICLE: "Rookie title is a good result." (FIAF3Europe.com, 2015)
Tumblr media
source: fiaf3europe.com via wayback machine published: october 27th, 2015 series: f3 euro, 2015
27.10.2015. The battle for the 2015 FIA Formula 3 European Championship rookie title was dominated by Charles Leclerc (Van Amersfoort Racing). The ranking that solely is open for Formula 3 newcomers was won by the Monegasque in superior style and with a clear lead over George Russell (Carlin) and Lance Stroll (Prema Powerteam) who finished second and third respectively.
Charles Leclerc made an impressive debut in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship by winning one of the three races of the season kick-off at Silverstone and finishing runner up in one of the others. In edition, he also secured his first two poles, at the British GP circuit. “The winter tests went really well but devising clear expectations for the season kick-off was still difficult. Nonetheless, I slightly hoped that things would take a positive course,” the Monegasque says about his first appearance on the FIA Formula 3 European Championship grid.
And he continued to deliver in fine style. After the sixth race meeting, at the Norisring, Leclerc had four race wins, four second places and five third places under his belt. And on the fifth race weekend, at Spa-Francorchamps, he even took the championship lead. But from Zandvoort he struggled with problems and lost the lead. “We suddenly had our problems finding the perfect set-up,” the 18-year old admits. Nonetheless, he kept on scoring and never lost his lead in the rookie ranking. He even was that dominant that he secured the rookie title as early as on the penultimate race weekend. “Having won the rookie championship is a good result,” he concludes.
In the end, he finished fourth in the championship, in his first Formula 3 season, thus defeating numerous far more experienced drivers on the highly competitive grid. A success that also once again underlined that Team Van Amersfoort Racing has got what it takes to successfully work with rookies and that the success of Max Verstappen who contested the 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship for the Dutch squad wasn’t a flash in the pan. “I had a good feeling right after the first test for Van Amersfoort Racing and from that point in time they were my first choice for the 2015 season,” says Leclerc whose father, Hervé Leclerc also raced in Formula 3, back in the mid-1980s. According to the young gun, his family and Nicola Todt’s agency Allroad Management that has been working with him since 2010 are his most important supporters.
One of the other drivers in the Allroad Management line-up was Frenchman Jules Bianchi and Bianchi and Leclerc were not only colleagues, but friends. “We often spent time together and our fathers also were close friends.” Therefore, it was extremely tough for Leclerc when Bianchi passed away on 17 July due to the head injuries he had suffered on 05 October, 2014 in the Japanese Formula 1 GP. “It was a really hard time but it never made an impact on my performances,” says Leclerc.
When it comes to the future, the pupil who – in his free time – likes any kind of sport or to meet his Italian girlfriend Giada, first of all dreams of making it to Formula 1. “That’s the ultimate goal of every young racing driver and I’m no exception. Le Mans definitely also would be great but currently, Formula 1 is what I want to achieve.” To be perfectly prepared if or when he makes it to the pinnacle of motor racing, he prepares in every area. “I still go to school although it’s a kind of home school. I want to pass my A levels next year to have the chance to study something technical should my racing schedule allow me doing so. I think such a course of studies would help me becoming an even better racing driver.”
