The World's Forests Are Doing Much Better Than We Think

You might be surprised to discover... that many of the world’s woodlands are in a surprisingly good condition. The destruction of tropical forests gets so much (justified) attention that we’re at risk of missing how much progress we’re making in cooler climates.

That’s a mistake. The slow recovery of temperate and polar forests won’t be enough to offset global warming, without radical reductions in carbon emissions. Even so, it’s evidence that we’re capable of reversing the damage from the oldest form of human-induced climate change — and can do the same again.

Take England. Forest coverage now is greater than at any time since the Black Death nearly 700 years ago, with some 1.33 million hectares of the country covered in woodlands. The UK as a whole has nearly three times as much forest as it did at the start of the 20th century.

That’s not by a long way the most impressive performance. China’s forests have increased by about 607,000 square kilometers since 1992, a region the size of Ukraine. The European Union has added an area equivalent to Cambodia to its woodlands, while the US and India have together planted forests that would cover Bangladesh in an unbroken canopy of leaves.

Logging in the tropics means that the world as a whole is still losing trees. Brazil alone removed enough woodland since 1992 to counteract all the growth in China, the EU and US put together. Even so, the planet’s forests as a whole may no longer be contributing to the warming of the planet. On net, they probably sucked about 200 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year between 2011 and 2020, according to a 2021 study. The CO2 taken up by trees narrowly exceeded the amount released by deforestation. That’s a drop in the ocean next to the 53.8 billion tons of greenhouse gases emitted in 2022 — but it’s a sign that not every climate indicator is pointing toward doom...

More than a quarter of Japan is covered with planted forests that in many cases are so old they’re barely recognized as such. Forest cover reached its lowest extent during World War II, when trees were felled by the million to provide fuel for a resource-poor nation’s war machine. Akita prefecture in the north of Honshu island was so denuded in the early 19th century that it needed to import firewood. These days, its lush woodlands are a major draw for tourists.

It’s a similar picture in Scandinavia and Central Europe, where the spread of forests onto unproductive agricultural land, combined with the decline of wood-based industries and better management of remaining stands, has resulted in extensive regrowth since the mid-20th century. Forests cover about 15% of Denmark, compared to 2% to 3% at the start of the 19th century.

Even tropical deforestation has slowed drastically since the 1990s, possibly because the rise of plantation timber is cutting the need to clear primary forests. Still, political incentives to turn a blind eye to logging, combined with historically high prices for products grown and mined on cleared tropical woodlands such as soybeans, palm oil and nickel, mean that recent gains are fragile.

There’s no cause for complacency in any of this. The carbon benefits from forests aren’t sufficient to offset more than a sliver of our greenhouse pollution. The idea that they’ll be sufficient to cancel out gross emissions and get the world to net zero by the middle of this century depends on extraordinarily optimistic assumptions on both sides of the equation.

Still, we should celebrate our success in slowing a pattern of human deforestation that’s been going on for nearly 100,000 years. Nothing about the damage we do to our planet is inevitable. With effort, it may even be reversible.

Man, the Russia/Ukraine war has led to a lot of terrible takes from far leftists. I have a mutual from Brazil, a self identified socialist, who is convinced that Ukraine is full of nazis. While they don't support Russia, they questioned why they have to be "pro-Ukraine" or "pro-Russia". They call Ukraine a "nazi hole" but call Russia merely "fascist". Am I wrong in thinking that they've been influenced by Russian propaganda? I know Ukraine does have a nazi/far right problem, but so does the US? And most European countries? idk they strongly hate the US/US government too, and it seems to create some kind of brainrot. at least they don't blindly support China or Russia like tankies do (nor identify with them), but it's still frustrating to take a neutral position on a pretty black and white situation.

I don't want to confront them 1) cause I'm not the type to argue over serious things like this and this may break our long friendship and 2) I'm not super educated on the nazi situation in Ukraine.

Yes, Russia has specifically focused its propaganda efforts on Latin America, Africa, and other regions that HAVE suffered from Western/European/American imperialism and are thus predisposed to take the worst view of them/believe that this situation is their fault somehow. This is similar to what the USSR did in newly postcolonial Africa in the 1960s and 1970s, positing themselves as offering the shared hand of communist brotherhood from Western oppressors. Because of more recent events like the invasion of Iraq, which was fully as unjustified as the invasion of Ukraine, Russian propagandists and their eager tankie/leftist foot soldiers have also got a lot of mileage out of "whataboutism." This is likewise an old Soviet propaganda technique designed to deflect any criticism of the actual situation by disingenuously asking "what about this other one!!!"

Likewise, the idea that Ukraine has a "Nazi problem" is itself propaganda. In the last election, far-right/Nazi-identified parties won barely 2% of the vote and AFAIK, no seats at all in the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian parliament). This is far lower than the nearly half of the USA voting for the far-right/Nazi-sympathetic Republican Party, and as noted, the far right elements in the UK and Europe. The idea that Ukraine is "full of Nazis" (with a Jewish president who just celebrated iftar with the Ukrainian Muslims/Crimean Tatars during Ramadan and instituted observance of Muslim holidays nationwide, very Nazi of him) is a line used by Russian propagandists to "justify" their attack and appeal to national memories of the Great Patriotic War (World War II) and the struggle against the Nazis, which is the central cultural grievance/memory in modern Russia. The Putin regime has referred to anyone they don't like, but especially the Ukrainians, as "Nazis" for a long time now, so it's supposedly their holy duty to kill them/commit ethnic cleansing/forcibly reunite the "fraternal" people of "Little Russia," as Ukraine has been called since the 17th century, with "Great Russia." And yeah, no.

Because the West and Europe has been pretty solidly on Ukraine's side, Russia has therefore cultivated countries like China, India, Brazil, etc, who have all suffered from Western interference and are looking to move into the first rank of global superpowers. This is, as noted, similar to the competing systems of influence built during the Cold War, but it also relies on much deeper Russian grievances that go back to the medieval era. Anybody who knows a thing about actual Russian history would therefore know that every single word it says about the Ukraine situation is a lie, but because that lie is useful for many other countries and fits into their own understanding of themselves, it is easy to repeat and act like it's a so-called superior moral position. This is also why US/American tankies so eagerly lap up Russian propaganda, because it plays into their moral sense of themselves as far better than the rest of the West and "righteously" discovering that the West is responsible for all the evil in the world etc etc. While non-Westerners are just helpless misunderstood puppets with no real agency or ability to make complex choices. This totally makes sense!!!

International Court of Justice Rules That Israel Must Stop Killing Palestinians

World BEYOND War

The International Court of Justice has ruled that Israel must cease its warmaking in Gaza — cease committing and inciting genocidal acts — and that the case charging Israel with genocide must proceed.

DETAILS OF THE RULING:

By 15-2: Israel shall take all measures within its power to prevent all acts within the scope of Genocide Convention article 2

15-2: Israel must immediately ensure that its military does not commit acts within the scope of GC.2

16-1: Direct and punish all members of the public who engage in the incitement of genocide against Palestinians

16-1: Ensure provision of urgently needed basic services, humanitarian aid

15-2: Prevent the destruction of and ensure the preservation of evidence to allegation of acts of GC.2

15-2: Israel will submit report as to how they’re adhering to these orders to the ICJ within 1 month

This is Article 2 of the Genocide Convention:

In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

(a) Killing members of the group;

(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

Therefore, Israel must cease killing Palestinians.

This was a make or break moment for international law, or rather a break or make-a-first-step moment. There is hope for the idea and reality of international law, but this is only a beginning.

The president of the International Court of Justice, who read the ruling, is Judge Joan Donoghue, former top legal advisor under Hillary Clinton at the U.S. State Department during the Obama Administration. She previously was the lawyer for the United States in its unsuccessful defense before the ICJ against charges by Nicaragua of minining its harbor.

The court voted for portions of this decision by 15-2 and 16-1. The “No” votes came from Judge Julia Sebutinde of Uganda and Ad Hoc Judge Aharon Barak of Israel.

The case presented by South Africa was overwhelming (read it or watch a key part of it), and Israel’s defense paper-thin. And the case just grew more overwhelming during the bizarre delay (yes, courts are slow, but this genocide is swift).

People all over the world built the pressure to move South Africa to act and other nations to add their support. Over 1,500 organizations signed a statement. Individuals signed a petition by CODEPINK, and sent almost 500,000 emails to key governments’ United Nations consulates through World BEYOND War and RootsAction.org. Click those links because more emails are needed now. While several nations have made public statements in support of South Africa’s case, we need them to file papers officially with the International Court of Justice. Governments that have made statement in support of the case against genocide include Malaysia, Turkey, Jordan, Bolivia, the 57 nations of the Organization of Islamic Countries, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Maldives, Namibia, and Pakistan, Colombia, Brazil, and Cuba.

Germany has backed Israel’s defense against the charge of genocide, which has been denounced by Namibia, victimn of a German genocide. Prominent Jews have denounced Germany’s shameful action.

Mass demonstrations in the streets of the world have continued in support of peace and justice, and to a far greater extent than major media outlets have reported.

Prior to today’s ruling from the International Court of Justice, the U.S. government pointedly refused to say whether it would comply with ruling, despite insisting that other nations comply with rulings by the ICJ.

Hamas said that it would cease fire if Israel does, and release all prisoners if Israel does

Germany, to its credit, reportedly said that it would comply.

Arming a genocide is complicity in genocide. While Israel gets most of its weapons from the United States, other weaponry comes from Germany, Italy, the UK, and Canada — at least some of which nations also provide parts to U.S. weaponsmakers that provide weapons to Israel. Italian opposition demanded an end to it. And then the Foreign Minister claimed Italy had stopped shipments on Oct 7. Meanwhile, Canada is coming under pressure to cease shipments and prevarications. In Canada, Members of Parliament are among over 250 people hunger striking for an arms embargo on Israel.

President Joe Biden already faces a lawsuit for aiding and abetting genocide in Gaza. In November 2023, Palestinian human rights organizations, along with Gaza- and U.S.-based Palestinians, filed suit in a U.S. federal court seeking declaratory and injunctive relief against the Biden Administration for failing to prevent genocide, and for aiding and abetting genocide. The plaintiffs seek an order to end U.S. military and diplomatic support to Israel. A hearing to address the government’s motion to dismiss will be held at 9 a.m. PT / 12 noon ET today, Friday. The hearing will be webstreamed to the public. You are encouraged to tune in and witness the U.S. government’s attempts at avoiding accountability and justify its support for the genocide that is happening in Gaza.

Aircraft carrier USS Gerald Ford will return from mission in defense of Israel

The largest aircraft carrier in the United States returns from the Mediterranean Sea, where it has been parked for almost three months.

The U.S. Navy has determined that its largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), will return home after a nearly three-month mission to defend Israel in the Middle East.

The USS Gerald Ford has been stationed at a close distance of Israel's attack in the Mediterranean Sea since October, in an effort to prevent the country's war against Hamas from turning into a regional conflict. However, the U.S. Navy states that the ship will begin its journey back home "in the next few days" and will be replaced by the USS Bataan - an amphibious assault ship named after a battle fought in the Philippines during World War II.

The USS Gerald R. Ford is one of the largest aircraft carriers in the world and the latest and most advanced aircraft carrier in the United States. He was already in the Mediterranean - involved in naval exercises with Italy - before receiving orders to provide support to Israel's Defense Forces after the October 7 terrorist attacks perpetrated by Hamas.

“Immediately after Hamas' brutal attack on Israel, the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group was ordered to go to the eastern Mediterranean to contribute to our regional deterrence and defense posture,” the U.S. Navy said in a statement.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin extended Ford's detachment three times in the hope that his presence would dissuade Iran and groups aligned with Iran, especially Hezbollah from Lebanon, from attacking Israel.

The ship, which carried about 5,000 sailors and more than 100 warplanes in eight squadrons, is now returning to its naval base in Virginia. However, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower will remain in the Red Sea to face the recent attacks on commercial ships perpetrated by Yemen's Houthi rebels.

“The DoD (Department of Defense) will continue to leverage its posture of collective force in the region to dissuade any state or non-state actor from escalating this crisis beyond Gaza,” the Navy said.

At the end of October, a U.S. Navy warship located in the northern Red Sea shot down three cruise missiles along with a batch of drones that were launched from Yemen and appeared to target Israel, the Pentagon said.

Margaret Ives Abbott (June 15, 1878 – June 10, 1955) was an American amateur golfer. She was the first American woman to win an Olympic event: the women's golf tournament at the 1900 Summer Olympics.

Lilias Eveline Armstrong (29 September 1882 – 9 December 1937) was an English phonetician. She worked at University College London, where she attained the rank of reader. Armstrong is most known for her work on English intonation as well as the phonetics and tone of Somali and Kikuyu. Her book on English intonation, written with Ida C. Ward, was in print for 50 years. Armstrong also provided some of the first detailed descriptions of tone in Somali and Kikuyu.

Morris Berg (March 2, 1902 – May 29, 1972) was an American catcher and coach in Major League Baseball, who later served as a spy for the Office of Strategic Services during World War II. Although he played 15 seasons in the major leagues, almost entirely for four American League teams, Berg was never more than an average player and was better known for being "the brainiest guy in baseball." Moving to Miami as a young woman to work for The Miami Herald, she became a freelance writer, producing over one hundred short stories that were published in popular magazines. Her most influential work was the book The Everglades: River of Grass (1947), which redefined the popular conception of the Everglades as a treasured river instead of a worthless swamp. The Gilded Age's Broadway Divas: Peggy Scott (Denée Benton)

The stylish and erudite Peggy Scott is the bridge between the whites of New York and the oft-overlooked Black elite. Her story is often separate from the vapid society scandals our other ladies are deeply entrenched in. While they sip tea and bicker about opera boxes, Peggy hides from a lynch mob in a barn and kisses a real-life historical figure with a wife and child at home. Great.

Denée Benton made her Broadway debut in my personal favorite show, Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, one of Tumblr's personal favorites as well, apparently. In it, she played the young ingenue, Natasha Rostova, marking a significant victory for young Black women who never get to play romantic leads, especially in traditionally white stories. She then went on to join the Natasha-Eliza pipeline and took on the role of Eliza Schuyler in Hamilton, a character originated by Philippa Soo, who had previously played Natasha in the first few off-Broadway productions of Comet. Full circle. Adding to the pipeline, Shoba Narayan who was an ensemble member and Natasha understudy also went on to star as Eliza in one of the touring companies of Hamilton.

Before and after shooting season two of The Gilded Age, Denée returned to the stage to star as Cinderella in the Encores! Into the Woods production last spring. More on that later.

#1: "No One Else," Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 (2016)

Now, when I call classical sopranos a dying breed, I am not saying they no longer exist. Denée Benton is one of the few young sopranos in the theatre, and we all dearly hope she continues to grace our stages rather than transfer to the lucrative world of film and television as so many do. Denée's singing voice in this is just exquisite. I saw it four times on Broadway, and I'd have seen it god only knows how many more if it hadn't closed.

Great Comet was a critical success in its off-Broadway life. Based on a 72-page slice of War and Peace, it follows Natasha Rostova as she navigates young love and all the scandal that entails. It is a beautiful production no matter where you see it. Whether it was in the tent in the Meatpacking District, or the gorgeously renovated Imperial Theatre. Unfortunately, it was an expensive endeavor that did not pan out financially for producers. Broadway was just a little too big. But it has since had a robust regional and international life, spawning productions in Brazil, Japan, and across the U.S.

On-screen mother Audra McDonald (Dorothy Scott) sang this song in April of 2015, several months before Denée would take over the role of Natasha. Like mother, like daughter. Audra's rendition has since been taken off youtube, and I am bereft. But I can link you to an audio HERE.

#2: "On the Steps of the Palace," Encores! Into the Woods (2022)

Concluding their 2022 season, NYCC launched a wildly successful production of Into the Woods, one of Sondheim's most beloved works. Here, Denée plays Cinderella and we all know and love that story. Broadway itself has had at least four Cinderella stories, and I'd argue this one is the best adaptation. But the competition is...not fierce. (With condolences to Bad Cinderella's Grace McLean, fellow Comet cast member.)

The Encores! production then transferred to Broadway in July of 2022, but by then Denée was filming Gilded Age and did not transfer with it. So of course, who came in to replace her? Philippa Soo. And, when the show's original cast move on and the new cast came in, Denée Benton was back in the saddle as Cinderella again. Isn't theatre a wonderful thing?

This song is, of course, from the classic Cabaret, now returning to Broadway this spring in a reimagined production from the West End. Bebe Neuwirth to star as Fraulein Schneider. It's all connected.

And once again, Audra McDonald has also sung this song. And it's as marvelous as you think.

Someone please mount a production of Light in the Piazza where it's a dual cast situation. On A days, give me Ruthie Ann Miles and Anna Zavelson for Asian!Piazza, and on B days give me Audra and Denée for Black!Piazza.

Genuine question: If the ppl of Brazil are anti-communism, why are they in BRICS with Russia and China, two communist countries?

1 - My God, this question single-handedly took back me back to my school years. Answering this lowkey makes me feel like I'm taking a test XD

2 - Russia has not been communist for over 30 years. Ya know. The USSR ended in 1991? It was kind of a big deal?

3 - China's government is a VERY weird combo of the worst of communism with the worst of capitalism. Obviously a lot about how the country works is a direct result of communism, but they have zero problem playing the capitalist game, and as a result EVERYONE has some kind of economical relation with China - they sell stuff the cheapest (thanks to slavery) and have literal billions of people foreigners can sell their stuff to. 4 - BRICS is not like the EU, or the USSR, or NATO. Brazil's opinions on anything that goes on with our "friends" doesn't matter because the point of it is not for us, Russia, India, China and South Africa to collectively decide anything about each other's politics (border control, currency, economic system, alliances in wartime, etc). It's literally just a group of nations that are struggling to remain/become relevant to the rest the world, while also trying not to go officially broke, that looked at each other and went "If you're about to crash and burn I'll try to help you out if I can, and then you do the same for me. Deal?" It's the possibility economic back up in case of crisis. The one thing we have to decide together is "Who gets to join this group of countries that are desperately trying to not implode?"

5 - Most brazilians are not really anti-communism because most brazilians don't fucking KNOW what communism is. A few might have heard names like Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Vladmir Putin, Mao or Fidel Castro, but they don't know shit about them. Lots of us know BRICS exists, but a ton cannot explain what it is. If you ask most brazilians to point to either China or Russia on a map, I'd say over half wouldn't be able to do it. And if you ask us to point to our own country on a map, a shockingly large number of people here will STILL not be able to do it because our educational system is that fucking bad.

You'll find LOTS of people, especially older generations, that think they understand what communism is, but in reality they were just fed the pro-USA propaganda those motherfuckers were spreading through all of latin america during the cold war by literally backing up dictatorships. And me acknowledging that fact and not calling the coup of 1964 "the revolution that was totally necessary and wanted by everybody and totally didn't lead to all kinds of violations of people's basic human rights" would already make half of my relatives yell at me to go to Cuba or Venezuela so I'll "stop" being a communist - because yes, saying "Dictatorship bad" is enough for them to label people communists.

Our president through 2019-2022, Jair Bolsonaro (I still HATE that dude's gut in case anyone is wondering) literally brought all of that old propaganda back to make people scared of the "communist threat inside Brazil" so he would get elected, and then tried to use that again to stage a coup after he lost to Lula in 2022.

Brazil is not "anti-communist." Brazil is a country filled with people that were never taught some pretty basic stuff about the world, and are thus easily manipulated by any politician.

Sam LoPresti made NHL history on March 4 in a game against the Boston Bruins when he faced a league record 83 shots in regulation (a 2-3 loss). He then left the NHL to join the United States Navy during the Second World War, theorizing that "it was safer to face Nazi U-boats in the North Atlantic than vulcanized rubber in North America."

LoPresti served aboard the SS Roger B. Taney. The ship was torpedoed and sunk during an Atlantic crossing in February 1943. LoPresti was thought to be the first casualty among American professional athletes in the conflict. But as the Roger B. Taney sank, LoPresti abandoned the ship.

He was one of 26 (or 20, reports vary) men who took refuge in a lifeboat with minimal water or food supplies. After 42 days, traveling nearly 2,500 miles southwest, they were found and rescued off the coast of Brazil. LoPresti was credited with saving the men's lives by catching the only real food they had during their entire ordeal.

After noticing dolphins swimming around their boat, LoPresti improvised a weapon by lashing a sheath knife to a boat hook. He plunged into the ocean, catching a 35-pound dolphin. They hauled it into the boat, drank its blood, and cooked the meat in a metal bucket with rags and kerosene.

Because goalies are always saving everyone else's butts, it's just what they do.

Spinosaurus (/ˌspaɪnəˈsɔːrəs/; lit. 'spine lizard') is a genus of spinosaurid dinosaur that lived in what now is North Africa during the Cenomanian to upper Turonian stages of the Late Cretaceous period, about 99 to 93.5 million years ago.[2][3] The genus was known first from Egyptian remains discovered in 1912 and described by German palaeontologist Ernst Stromer in 1915. The original remains were destroyed in World War II, but additional material came to light in the early 21st century. It is unclear whether one or two species are represented in the fossils reported in the scientific literature. The best known species is S. aegyptiacus from Egypt, although a potential second species, S. maroccanus, has been recovered from Morocco. The contemporary spinosaurid genus Sigilmassasaurus has also been synonymized by some authors with S. aegyptiacus, though other researchers propose it to be a distinct taxon. Another possible junior synonym is Oxalaia from the Alcântara Formation in Brazil.

Spinosaurus is the longest known terrestrial carnivore; other large carnivores comparable to Spinosaurus include theropods such as Tyrannosaurus, Giganotosaurus and Carcharodontosaurus. The most recent study suggests that previous body size estimates are overestimated, and that S. aegyptiacus reached 14 metres (46 ft) in length and 7.4 metric tons (8.2 short tons) in body mass.[4] The skull of Spinosaurus was long, low, and narrow, similar to that of a modern crocodilian, and bore straight conical teeth with no serrations. It would have had large, robust forelimbs bearing three-fingered hands, with an enlarged claw on the first digit. The distinctive neural spines of Spinosaurus, which were long extensions of the vertebrae (or backbones), grew to at least 1.65 meters (5.4 ft) long and were likely to have had skin connecting them, forming a sail-like structure, although some authors have suggested that the spines were covered in fat and formed a hump.[5] The hip bones of Spinosaurus were reduced, and the legs were very short in proportion to the body. Its long and narrow tail was deepened by tall, thin neural spines and elongated chevrons, forming a flexible fin or paddle-like structure.

Spinosaurus is known to have eaten fish, and most scientists believe that it hunted both terrestrial and aquatic prey. Evidence suggests that it was semiaquatic; how capable it was of swimming has been strongly contested. Spinosaurus's leg bones had osteosclerosis (high bone density), allowing for better buoyancy control. Multiple functions have been put forward for the dorsal sail, including thermoregulation and display; either to intimidate rivals or attract mates. It lived in a humid environment of tidal flats and mangrove forests alongside many other dinosaurs, as well as fish, crocodylomorphs, lizards, turtles, pterosaurs, and plesiosaurs.

He was so happy: the G7 was going off without a hitch, no one had pulled any surprises, he had managed to keep both Donald and Boris under control (a fact that had led Brigitte to joke after the group dinner last night "if that isn’t worthy of a Nobel Peace Price, I don’t know what is!"), and, according to his wife, the spouses were having fun. He felt a little bit like he was on top of the world.

So of course, he should have expected the bubble to pop.

He knew it was not good when an aide pulled him aside before his next meeting, grabbing his arm and yanking him quickly into the nearest vacant room, seeing this cool as a cucumber man looking as angry as he’s ever seen him.

"What happened?" He asked, his stomach suddenly filling with dread.

"I think you’re going to want to see this," he replied gently, passing the phone to Emmanuel.

He didn’t know he could get this angry. He could get heated, frustrated, mad. But anger like this? Even during his worst fight with his worst enemy, even when Le Pen came after his family, he didn’t feel like this; didn’t feel this rage, this anger, down to the very last cell of his body as he stared at the screen.

"Please tell me this is a joke," Emmanuel finally said after several minutes of silence when he finally felt he had enough control to speak, when he finally stopped vibrating from controlling his rage.

"I’m afraid not. I’m afraid the President of Brazil really posted that."

"That bastard -" Emmanuel raged.

"You cannot do something -"

"The hell I can’t!"

"The whole point of this was to hurt you. To make you act like this. You can’t let him win."

"He went after my wife! I don’t care about the optics, I don’t care about the implications of how weak I’m going to look or whatever -"

"It’s not just the optics here. You can’t start a war with another country because he calls your wife ugly."

"What kind of husband would I be if I stand here and let him get a way with this huh?"

"A husband who is also President of a country with a nuclear arsenal -"

"He hurt her because of me! Don’t you get that? They all hurt her because of me. Well, I’m sick of it! I’m not taking this one lying down!" He yelled, the anguish clear in his voice.

He took a second to calm down, knowing he needed to get to his wife, and the last thing she needed was to take care of him, which he knows she would feel obligated to do if he was angry, his selfless wife, always putting others before herself. With finality, before running to their suite as fast as humanly possible, he ordered, "figure out what the least damaging thing here is, and then we’re going to do it. Because he is not getting away with this. Now. I need to go find Brigitte."

"But you have -"

"Boris can piss off. And if doesn’t understand why I’m blowing him off after he sees this - because the whole world is going to see this - he can piss off all the way back to England."

"Yes, sir," his aide replied, barely heard as Emmanuel booked it up to the suite.

His heart sank when he could hear her crying all the way out in the hallway. "Oh, Brigitte," he whispered to himself as he approached her loyal bodyguard.

"Sir," he acknowledged, stepping away to give them their privacy.

"Who told her?" Emmanuel asked, needing to know what to expect when he walked in there.

"Tristan, I believe, sir."

"At least it was someone kind," he mumbled to himself, before thanking the man, and walking inside.

"Brigitte?" He called out to announce himself, not wanting to startle her. Hearing no answer, he continued until her got to the bedroom. "Oh, mon cœur," he said as he saw her balled into herself in the fetal position. He quickly toed off his shoes, and climbed into bed, wrapping himself, tightly, protectively around her, hoping to shield her from any more pain.

"Emmanuel?" She asked, weakly, sniffling heavily when she finally registered his presence.

"I’m right here, chérie," he promised, pressing kisses to every part of her he could reach. "I’m so sorry. I am so, so sorry," he kept whispering as he rocked her, gently trying to calm her down.

He noticed that at some point as she was calming down she had fallen asleep, her breathing had evened out and she relaxed slowly out of the rigid position he had found her in. Carefully, as not to wake her, he disentangled himself so he could grab one of his cell phones. Quickly, he typed to Alexis, "we’re in for the night. Do whatever you have to do. I’m not leaving her."

He waited for the "yes, sir," reply before he crawled back in bed, taking her once again in his arms. "I’m going to make him pay for this, Brigitte. I swear it," he vowed before he too fell into a fitful sleep.

French Air Force releases images of interception of Russian aircraft in the Baltic Sea

Russian warplanes were intercepted by NATO jets a few hours after Putin's new nuclear threat to the West.

On 1º March, NATO reported that French Mirage 2000-5 fighters intercepted Russian Su-30SM fighters over the Baltic Sea. Moments later, two more Russian aircraft, an Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft and an An-72 transport aircraft, were also intercepted by French Air Force jets on a NATO mission.

NATO and the French Air Force released videos and images of the interception of Russian fighters, a few hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a new threat to the West about the nuclear war, where he said that Russia could cause the "destruction of civilization", by stating that NATO forces are "preparing to attack Russian territory".

The press service of the NATO Air Force Command said that the incident occurred in international airspace in northern Poland on February 29.

According to NATO, two Mirage 2000-5 of the French Air and Space Force intercepted two Russian Sukhoi Su-30SM jets over the Baltic Sea. Subsequently, the French fighters were sent to a new mission, where they also intercepted two Russian aircraft, an An-72 and an Il-20, which were flying in international airspace in northern Poland, the statement says.

The French aircraft departed from Siauliai Air Base, Lithuania, during the NATO Air Policing mission.

In recent years, there have been several interceptions of aircraft that have not caused any serious incidents.

NATO said that air forces across Europe sent their jets more than 300 times to intercept Russian military aircraft approaching the Alliance's airspace only last year.
