Every once, if you are lucky, you encounter someone with such powerful and generous light in their eyes that they rekindle the lost light within you and return it magnified; someone whose calm, kind, steady gaze penetrates the very center of your being and, refusing to look away from even the most shadowy parts of you.

With life and a back-breaking work schedule for a couple of years - until now, thank you greedy film studios - I have barely undertaken, nevermind finished, any personal sewing projects. This meant that when Star Wars Celebration returned to my neck of the woods this year I had no costumes to wear even if I had the energy to spend a day sweating and Uncomfy. But I needed something swarsy, even if just for a minute!
Tumblr media
That led to me bashing this jacket together so I could put together a vaguely Hera Syndulla inspired look. The franchise and I may be at odds, but my general will always have my heart. Draped on the Tuesday night, made on the Wednesday, slip-stitched the lining in on Friday night after a day at the con and worn on the Saturday. I think the end result was quite lovely!
I called this a ‘doodle’, as I was effectively sketching the idea of a jacket with only a vague idea of what I wanted to achieve: a short cropped jacket, possibly a grown kimono collar and power shoulders since I already had XL raglan pads pinned to my dress form for the Arcane jacket I’ve been tooling with for a year and a half (and finally finished a month ago.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The drape evolved into panels as there is one thing I love: unnecessary panelling. This also felt appropriately Swarsy. To lean into that Her Syndulla pilot/70’s workwear vibe I wanted a back yoke and vent. (You can tell this was a super quick project bc it has a side seam and these days I am morally opposed to side seams.)
Some semblance of shaped achieved I dove straight into smashing a pattern together from the drape, and decided that I would work out any issues as I went.
The main fabric is a coated scoured cotton I bought several years ago for a Hera jacket (inspired by the Lego series) so it’s come vaguely full circle back to it’s original intention. Ish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As I was cutting I decided it needing piping! Yes! Piping is very fun and rebellionish, and another of my favourite things. It adds a lovely definition to panelling whilst also adding support to the fairly exaggerated silhouette. The piping was made from a stretching cotton twill that I dyed several years ago for an(other) abandoned Hera project.
The piping led to an abundance of topstitching as a lazy way to keep all seam allowances in place, and then becoming a tribute to Jyn Erso and her topstitching.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The jacket was then lined in a brown fine grosgrain that I inherited from a job, which was quickly slipped stitched in. I faced the cuffs with the wrong side of the main fabric to have a featured turn back.
Tumblr media
The final look thrown together at the most exhausted, low-effort Celebration. I was aiming for cool modern Hera Syndulla but the end result was much more April O’Neill.
There are a number of grain issues, particularly with the back panels and vents that I didn’t particularly bother to finesse from the drape to the cutting. But it’s fine! It’s a funky little jacket for one event, no one got what I was going for but I did get some compliments. And most of all I got the satisfaction of actually making something from beginning to end in a period of exhausted personal sewing drought.

Question for any folks who have experience with Batuu Bounding/Disneyland!
I'm going to Galaxy's Edge for the first time very soon, and I'm both extremely excited but also terrified I'll do something wrong. I've been wanting to go since it was first announced, and I'm not sure when I'll get another opportunity so I want to make this count!
I love dressing up so of course i want to try Batuu Bounding (dressing up in-universe), but my personal sense of what counts as costumey or not is extremely skewed. Adults are technically not allowed to wear costumes inside Disneyland, but people are also encouraged to "dress like a local" when visiting Batuu, aka Galaxy's Edge, aka Star Wars land. This creates a very gray zone on what counts as a costume and what is Batuu bounding.
I've tried to do a ton of research on my own, reading the official rules, blogs, and even reddit, but would appreciate any feedback, especially if you have personal experience! Note, I'll be going to Disneyland, aka Disney West, aka Anaheim, California.
So my question: Do you think they'll let me in with these outfits?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Technically I'm following their guidelines:
-Not attempting to look like any official character
-No robes/cape (just a scarf that can be adjusted)
-No weapons except lightsaber (yes, it's the Visions one from Lop & Ochō. I'm Japanese, I thought it fitting I get the Japanese lightsaber lol)
-No hard armor—except the back of glove plates, which are really small and I think I've seen people with those? After receiving advice on Twitter, I'm just gonna leave the gloves off entirely, better not to risk it plus they're gonna be uncomfy anyway
-Nothing dragging on ground
-No costume pieces; both of the above outfits are a combination of traditional Japanese-style, J-punk/rock, alternative, and natural cotton/linen fashion, all of which I wear regularly as part of my daily wardrobe (see what I mean by "my sense of what counts as too costumey is extremely skewed" LMAO)
-I know they have a "no masks" rule, but mine is a COVID mask, and they allow those right? If the outer mask protector is too costume-y, I can defs take it off, but I ain't going without any mask.
-My "I am not a cast member" item is the jetpack backpack, but idk I don't think I look like a cast member
I was gonna make the black dress one main but I think I liked the second one with vest and kama more (let's see if I can tolerate wearing pants all day lmao). Everything is layered, can easily mix 'n match tops/bottoms, I have a few other color variation tops I can mix in too. I also think Cali is gonna be way warmer than I'm expecting so I may shed layers. For now I'm thinking of making my main day the second one, except instead of a green shirt under the green vest, I'll wear a black one.
Also, note that while my True Mandos leather patch is skewed on the green outfit in the above photos, it'll be properly attached on the day of. I just wanted it lightly attached for a quick try-on photo, but it can securely attach via pins on the back! (also yes, that is a mini Fennec-inspired light-up Greeblie <3 )
Also a few more closeups:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The empty strap thing is a harness to carry a Droid Depot droid, which I have a reservation to build on the first droid. The casings holder thing on the strap that makes it look like a bandolier are kyber crystal holders. I also have an empty leather holder for a detonator soda can and yet another kyber crystal holder on my belt. After getting advice on Twitter, I'm going to put all of these in my bag when I enter the park to reduce how cluttered I look at the entrance, since they're technically all things to carry stuff I will be buying inside the park but do not yet have.
I have a giant mythosaur brooch on my scarf, but it's not solid metal, but a resin-metal mix. I think it should count as a "pin" and not armor.
The thing on my left arm is a decked out Magicband+. I still have no idea how to use it but I hope it will be intuitive ^ ^;
(yeah, so many Etsy sellers have received my money over the past half year that has passed since I started planning for this trip lmao)
I also received feedback on Twitter that my lightsaber sheath looks too much like a katana which may trigger security, so I'm going to be making a little end cap for it to make it look blunter. It's a nice Pixel blade attached to an expensive Proffie lightsaber, so I do want to protect it, and hope a blunted endcap will make it clearer that it's a lightsaber.
I'll probably only bother with the droid carrier + lightsaber + kyber crystal bandolier on one of the three days I'm there, so I can travel lighter on my other days!
I'm really hoping I'll get to talk to Boba/Fennec/Din on at least one of the 3 days I'm there, which is one of the reasons why I've got so much Mando stuff on (in addition to just, trying to make a "bounty hunter" look, and also eyyy Mandos). Idk if it's too subtle or if they'll ignore me bc I'm trying too hard sobs
So yeah, with my aforementioned modifications, do you think they'll let me in?
Any feedback, opinions, or even general advice for a first time visitor to Batuu would be immensely appreciated <3
Thanks so much!!! ;A;

We all know Disney bounding, but does anyone do Phantom bounding? I was wearing a ruffled white long sweater the other day and had someone tell me it kind of looked like the dressing gown. I guess so, but it wasn't my first intention. Now I was thinking of maybe dressing it up a bit more for fun. Has me thinking too, how would it look for Phantom? Maybe all black, long black hoodie with a hat?
Hahaha yes, we all know Disney bounding, and I certainly did not have to google it just now!
Your Phantom description is similar to what Peter Jöback once wore to a TV spot rehearsal with Ali Ewoldt:

I always liked the idea of dark, fitted suits/vests with gloves, but that's just me! I'd love to hear other people's ideas.
There have been quite a few takes on modern Christine, like this version of the wishing dress by @ange-de-la-musique, but I've forgotten/lost a lot of them and would love to see more!

Did a bounding thing for Goncharov (1973), the under-appreciated Martin Scorsese art film about a Russian-born mafia boss in Italy, his mysterious femme fatale wife Katya, his would be lover Andrey, the seductive Sofia, and Ice Pick Joe.
Subtle is key here. You could always go all out with a white imitation mink stole to call Katya to mind, but this was my attempt at distilling the movie itself to a singular look.
The coat is obviously Goncharov inspired. The shoes are Italian leather. As shoes (well, shoe imagery) had such a prominent role in the film I wanted them to shine.
The top is based on the lining from Andrey’s coat in the first shot he’s seen in (before it’s revealed to be him).
The pants are supposed to call back to Mario’s every day clothes when he has the dream sequence. They’re a bit more casual than the rest of the outfit, but the look as a whole makes it work.
The bullet pendant could be any of the MANY bullets used from this film (I read they actually went over their budget for blanks, and Scorsese had to dip into his own personal bank account to get more), but I like to think it’s either Katya’s or Andrey’s bullet.
The pomegranate earrings are meant to call back to the fruit scene. Sofia would actually wear these, I think.
The alarm clock bag is the boldest part of this outfit, and easily the one you can leave out if you don’t want to seem too obvious. But I thought it would be pretty integral to the whole look, as the clock imagery really can’t be ignored. You can easily swap out the earrings or necklace if you find some nice clock jewelry, and keep it all more subtle.
The socks are maps of Italy for obvious reasons!
Anyway, feel free to share your own!!!

Our fandom forbearers did NOT suffer through Anne Rice, strikethrough, and other bullshit for fucking ACOTAR and Harry Potter fans to fucking ruin it for all of us by selling fanfiction. I am not losing novel length yaoi epics because some of you don't know how to act in fannish spaces and yes I do blame the booktokification of fanfic but I also blame those of you that treat fandom like content to consume and not a community to engage with.
