I think it’d be really neat if there was a film adaptation of Jekyll and Hyde where you don’t see Hyde’s face at all. Like, his back is always to the camera or his face is obscured by shadow or perhaps just an extreme close up of one feature on his face or something.

Just to mirror how he is never described in any detail in the book and how none of the other characters can quite adequately describe his appearance even when they see him.

The scene where Colin cuts his hand is one of- if not my favorite scene in the book. It's the foundation for the rest of their relationship. It's the first time we see Colin and Pen be truly vulnerable with each other, and more importantly, it's the first time we get to see them truly challenge each other. It's also in my opinion necessary build-up for the Whistledown reveal and their argument in the carriage.

I was so scared we weren't going to see even a glimpse of this scene in the show and it looks like we really might which makes me more excited about its potential but even more nervous about how they might screw it up. Please, please, please don't screw this up.

will never get over the fact that mr. heathcliff and mr. arthur huntington are canonically more attractive than mr. rochester.

aside from the fact that they're both described as being handsome, and mr. rochester is described as being not handsome, we can see this play out in the text. while it's a point that mr. rochester's love interests only want him for his money/status, with arthur and heathcliff that's not entirely the case (you could argue that isabella is partly concerned with heathcliff's newfound wealth, but imo if he wasn't handsome as well, she probably wouldn't bother).

like helen I Love My Bible graham sees arthur and immediately starts drawing and painting him to sublimate her very very obvious attraction that everyone (including him) is aware of. even though she's told he's horrible, she says I CAN FIX HIM!!!! JUST LOOK AT HIM!!! and annabella just openly cheats on her husband with him for years. like helen, isabella linton is told that heathcliff is horrible but she's like BUT HOW CAN THAT BE TRUE WHEN HANDSOME? HAVE YOU SEEN HIM? and as soon as mr. lockwood meets heathcliff in the very beginning he becomes obsessed with him. even after heathcliff lets him be attacked by his vicious dogs, mr. lockwood refuses to leave him alone. not to mention that even the initially biased and usually critical nelly agrees that he's handsome, and cathy literally dying because she regrets not marrying him

— although cathy/heathcliff's bond is much more than skin deep / isn't about looks or regular forms of attraction (bc they have an almost twin-like, spiritual bond) i feel like seeing him healthy and handsome and "glowed up" really hurt cathy 10x more than she was hurt before his return, bc back then she could maybe try to delude herself out of missing him as much by remembering him when he was in his slovenly servant role & embarrassing her infront of the lintons — but seeing proof of his potential & that he always did have it in him to accrue & maintain wealth/education/fashion (and yes, good looks too), & that he could've/would've done so if he'd married her, is really what helped to kill her (aside from... y'know, the whole childbirth thing of course - but the narrative does heavily imply that the drama from heathcliff's return decreased her chances of surviving childbirth, so when i refer to her death, i'm looking at the more internal/emotional causes)

Also the repeated emphasis on dreams is interesting this episode, wonder if that'll play a part in something later on. 👀👀

It's really funny how in the first story, Arsène Lupin is presented to the audience like some force of nature, a creature of the night. His name was first revealed in midst of a violent storm at sea, then the message was cut off by a literal lightning strike like some horror movie. (There's also a bit of Poseidon imagery that connects to 813 here, if you squint.)

The information that the ship was infiltrated was meant to be kept secret among the crew, but oh oops, it somehow slipped and now the entire ship knows. How mysterious. Most importantly, the passengers of this steamship were full of the wealthy middle and upper class. Lupin was said to be amongst them, in the first class cabins, and they were terrified at the thought of him.

Oh, Lupin was seen nowhere near the scene of the crime? Well, obviously "a man like Arsène Lupin could commit a crime without being actually present." He can straight up walk through walls and be in two places at once, apparently!

Then there's this line where it describes how he picked the most valuable stones from the jewellery, "like flowers from which the beautiful colored petals had been ruthlessly plucked." Like, holy shit, Arsène Lupin the Evil Flower Plucker.

He's the rich people's boogeyman. They're convinced that he can do anything, like a supernatural presence that stalks them, the monster that hides under their beds.

It's kinda sweet that Robo considers himself meaningfully "related" to Tesla because of the theory that his consciousness came from a snapshot of Tesla's brain activity. On the other hand it is extremely funny to think that by taking a scan of his brain functions and putting it into a robot body, Tesla managed to produce a son who is LESS autistic than he was

TGS!Hyde inspired art!

Little rant down below...

I drew these sketches when I started reading comic The Glass Scientists by Sage Bardugo (which, btw, has ASTONISHING colouring i love it yummy) since I started that before reading and finishing the original novella. My Hyde design has changed since then but I really like this art, I'll send those pictures later :) I haven't finished TGS yet but I will after I finish fangirling over the book

Erm anyway I completely expected Hyde would become a blorbo for me the moment he was about to be introduced in The Glass Scientists.

I mean, come on, essentially the human form of every "undesirable" trait this emotionally repressed man has had and is finally able express without damaging his original reputation? Also transformation? If youve seen all of the "The Fly" posts on my main you understand

and he is also literally all I have drawn for the past 3 days (save for a silly Henry Jekyll drawing I did which I will also also show later) it is wild. The freaking tragedies in these Victorian novels man...

Anyway I have much more art I want to post/draw and tons of thoughts and memes and incorrect quotes I wanna put out there in the future but anyway enjoy ^-^

this book is um. not very well written. i hope marcus livius drusus has a narratively satisfying character arc and then dies

#sulla and silo #mr athano you have to characterise your characters you can’t just assume the reader has read masters of rome #like ok. i have read it. but hhtghhhhhhjhvvv #imo one of the best things colleen does in masters of rome is just. fully committing to it being insanely long and detailed and covering a #period of like 100 years #because it means you do get a sense of what the ‘normal’ (as normal as it gets) political functioning of rome is like Before it all goes to #shit #throwing a reader into the events of drusus’ tribunate with no context about drusus’ character #and even. only mentioning that he’s caepio’s brother in law After he has barely reacted to caepio trying to have him assassinated is like #??????#on the other hand this book is so niche that maybe he Can rely on his audience to have read masters of rome #ALSO im still right at the start of the book so maybe it does improve #also also drusus is probably not a main character. unlike sulla who Is getting more distinct characterisation #maybe there’s still time for drusus to be sacrificed to the cause of italian citizenship…………#beeps
