Black Femme Character Dependency is not going to be active. I just don't have the time or energy. I'm currently in the process of trying not to be evicted. Anything that is in queue will post whenever those days are. Anything else will not. The people this blog was built for are all out there somewhere and I encourage anybody else who has a similar heart to do so. It just can't be me anymore. Thanks for 4 years of this and my apologies for all the drafts that won't become part of the page.
May you always be housed, clothed, fed, and most importantly, happy. Thank you for supporting the blog and supporting me when possible. Enjoy your Black ass life!

I haven't seen any posts about this yet but l've seen some fan art that makes me feel this needs to be said:
Don't forget Leah Sava Jeffries has darker skin when making Annabeth Chase fan art!
Tumblr media
She is much closer to Lupita Nyong'o than Zoe Kravitz when it comes to shading, reflection, and complementary color usage :).
Lighting for dark skin is different on light skin. Light skin gets changed by lighting, and dark skin reflects the lighting. Below is a lovely shot of Nyong'o's character from Wakanda Forever in mourning. The filmmakers emphasize the umber qualities of her skin in contrast to the funereal white and (arguably harsh) light across her shoulder below.
Tumblr media
Try to pick spots that aren't directly in or near the light, and try mixing 3 or more! You can put it into a color mixer online, or even color pick, lower the opacity, and lay the shades over each other until you find one that fits. And of course, the more 'realistic' you want to go with shading and lighting, the more shades you're going to want to be able to explore vivaciously :D.
Let's take a look at the same 3 beautiful actresses I mentioned at the beginning, with a bad color picked area and a better-ish color picked area. (Please keep in mind, these are not perfect comparisons, as I was not able to find pictures of all 3 actresses under the same kind of lighting.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kravitz's has a clear difference between the two, but they aren't too far apart, in comparison to Nyong’o’s and Jeffries’s. Note the dullness in the poorly picked shades as opposed to the better ones. Also keep in mind that while Kravitz has a rosy undertone (at least in that picture - it’s from The Batman, which has stylized coloring) Nyong’o has a slight cool undertone (I can’t pin down quite what, but the picture is definitely not stylized like Kravitz’s).
Jeffries runs more ochre or russet, but neither of those are pink. They are more red than terracotta or umber, but to call Jeffries’s face rosy would be wrong. Err more towards the golden when drawing her.
Tumblr media
^^saved an image from a writing tutorial long ago, but can’t seem to find it. If someone recognizes it, I’ll link it. EDIT: it’s from this post. Thanks @autumnrowancollector ! <3
And also, the darker skin gets, the less likely warm undertones are going to appear. Don't be afraid to use blue or purple or even green on occasion!
Additionally, cool lighting on dark skin is always a win imo.
Tumblr media
(I was going to use that picture of Jeffries as Annabeth by the lightning bolt, but then I realized the lighting on her face doesn’t quite match up with where it should hit from that angle, and I realized they kind of just turned everything bluer, so screenshot time!)
(Also if you want another really great live action example, check out anything Aldis Hodge is in, like Leverage and Black Adam)(and of course there’s Spiderverse <3 but I want to post pictures of Hodge)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, to here’s a list of more experienced people’s advice:
Black facial features & hair
Shading digitally for a (somewhat) monotone Black character
Stylistic choices and places to start looking for inspiration (besides a search engine).
Coloring Black people’s lips
A better coloration tutorial
Also a nice tutorial for Indigenous skin tones, just in case yall want to draw Piper or use this information for other dark skinned characters :).
EDIT: Some actresses who are closer in skintone to use for Annabeth, provided by the lovely @blackfemmecharacterdependency ! If you can’t find a reference for Jeffries in a specific lighting, maybe check out these ladies’ pictures! It’s a reblog, so scroll down.
TLDR: Don’t make Annabeth pink and pale, make her dark and golden.

Dark Skin Directory
I did one of these for my sideblog BlackFemmeCharacterDependency (BFCD) and... While it’ll take longer on this end to do because there are more prominent figures here than on that one, I thought it would be good to also have one for my main...
EDIT: Okay, so the one that I did for BFCD does not work, so I am posting this one to see if it works, and if not, they’ll both be WIPS until I have the time to repair them
For the purposes of this list and on this page, whenever I say “dark skinned,” I mean a traditional brown crayon or darker. I grew up around Black people, so the words “dark skinned” do not mean the same thing to me as it do to nonblacks.

Most of these shows were from the greatest decade, the 90′s ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  Y2K saw a major drop in black family sitcoms, and the 70′s and 80′s were struggling. I’d honestly take any of these shows, even the animated ones, over any sitcom on air today. Nothing better than a show that portrays black families in a positive light, the father being present, the kids going through real things black kids go through, the mother being stable, and healthy relationships. #BlackHistoryMonth

BLACK CAKE SEASON ONE EPISODE ONE: COVEY
"We couldn't look back. Covey was dead. Or so I thought. It didn't take long for me to learn that you can't run from the truth. You can't run from who you really are. Eventually, the truth will surface. And when it does, you must reckon with it."

Is Belle a good role model for girls or did we all grow up to be kidnapped?
Let’s talk about Belle in the Beauty in the Beast, one of the only Princess written by women. We’ll get into how Belle is not, in fact, solely dependent on a man or in a toxic relationship. Then what her overall arc is in the story, and finally why the Beast and Gaston are NOT interchangeable (which is kind of the point of the tale).

I waited over a decade for this movie, so let’s celebrate the first anniversary of its release by talking about how Black Widow grapples with human trafficking, generational trauma, and how these affect Natasha Romanoff's character arc. It’ll be fun I promise!

A Bolstered Look at the Jasmine's Costumes in Disney's Aladdin (1992)
Jasmine has an uh interesting costume style. Let's talk about it.
First off, there is a lot of Orientalism going on in these designs. Watch this video for more information about that. So, instead, I'm mainly going to stick to discussing how her costumes relate to the plot of this movie and to what other princesses wore.
Tumblr media
Here is the standard outfit she wears. The color is quite striking and integrates a number of touches that are historically considered "Oriental." Opulence is the aesthetic of royalty, and even if the outfit doesn't have the expected embroidery or beadwork, it certainly fits in with her surroundings and princess-status. She's wearing a lot more jewelry than we've seen before and even has gold shoes!
Female Representation: 8/10 Because of the demographics, I'm going to look at this from the viewpoint of costumes for little girls (so I don't mean to imply that any of this is improper for an adult or Jasmine herself to wear). But this one shows a lot of skin and most costumes for sale have fabric covering up at least the midriff. While the other ladies in the movie wear the same amount of clothes (or less!), the design is going to be construed as a bit more sexualized than the other princesses. However, the pants are opaque and she is never animated in an objectifying way in this outfit, so it's not bad.
Practicality: 8/10 Other than the danger of a sun burn, it's a fairly practical outfit. The pants would keep her cool and be easy to move around in, the top obviously wouldn't be in the way, either. No sweeping sleeves here like her predecessors.

My #1 post of 2022
A Vaguely Underwhelmed Look at the Costumes in Beauty and the Beast
Belle may not have the most costumes (quantity) of the princesses, but she definitely has one of the most iconic dress there is. Read more below.
Tumblr media
This is it, the staple of her wardrobe. Does she have more than one blue dress? Does she wear another white dress under it? Who knows - but it is the go-to outfit for anything that comes up. Shopping in town, avoiding that dudebro who won't leave her alone, adding a cloak to go to an enchanted castle in the rain to save her boyfriend, it does everything.
Female Representation: 10/10 I can't speak to the historical accuracy, but as a costume for all ages, it's perfect. The silhouette is pretty timeless and, while it may be figure-hugging, it does not emphasize Belle's maturity (in contrast to the similar outfits worn by the bimbettes). You could lower the score because of the apron, but I think this is more a class signifier (other peasants in the town have them regardless of gender) than it is an implication that she should be doing work. We don't see her do any actual work in it anyway, so it just seems practical.
Practicality: 10/10 As I said above, it is extremely practical and takes her through the majority of events in the story. The sleeves are long but can be rolled up easily. The skirt is multi-layered but never seems to get in the way. There's a reason our pragmatic protagonist wears it all the time.

Idk if you wanted asks related to black femmes sent here or to your other blog but please....you have to watch castlevania nocturne for annette....she's so good
Either way is fine! I intend to eventually watch it! I tried to watch the other one, just Castlevania, abd I recall falling to sleep on it several times before I decided it maybe wasn't meant for me. (Somebody I used to work with had done work on Season 2, I believe, so I was gonna watch it for support and flunked out).
But I am very interested in seeing Annette. I've been putting her in the blackfemmecharacterdependency queue and I wanna know more about her. Idk when I'll get around to it, but it's on my list. Thank you so much! I rarely get mail anymore!!
