Hello Tumblr! We're so excited by the reception received here that we'd like to re-introduce ourselves! OSR is an online-only used vinyl shop that aims to be your local record store, no matter where you are!
This blog specifically is a special side project of ours, where we post music we've digitized straight from our vinyl inventory that you can't find on traditional streaming sources for various reasons. If you look through our constantly-updating archive, you'll see some surprising names in the bunch as well as any genre and era that you can imagine.
As far as the record store goes, even though we're just a small independent shop (low-key: all one person 90% of the time), we carefully and professionally clean, test, and grade each record that goes up for sale to ensure that you get the best and most accurate depiction of what you'll receive, all at the cheapest rates you'll find on discogs (with hundreds of records under $10). So if you or someone you know are looking to start or add to their vinyl collection, check us out!
Or if you have any questions, send us an ask
And now, back to our regularly scheduled music!

Details about the Amazing Digital Circus pop-up shop in Japan (and the exclusive premiere of episode 2 associated with it)
This post's title kind of sums up the basics, but here's some background: in early March of this year, a Japanese company called InfoLens entered a licensing agreement with Glitch Productions to sell products based on The Amazing Digital Circus. The same press release also announced that they would open a pop-up store in Tokyo, which would operate from April 26th to May 12th. (If I'm not mistaken, InfoLens seems to specialize in these sorts of agreements - they've made similar deals and pop-up shops for everything from Apex Legends to Garten of Banban.) Around this time, they also started up an official Japanese Twitter account devoted to the series.
Close to a month later, they would announce more details about the shop, including what goods they would sell (a mixture of existing merchandise from Glitch's online store and newly-made ones) and plans for a second location in Osaka (running June 7-23). This also coincided with the first time Glitch Productions' main Twitter account publicly acknowledged any of this (as far as I know).
Not long after this came another announcement: they would be holding a raffle where the winners would attend the world premiere of the series' second episode on April 25th, the day before the Tokyo store opened to the public.
So how'd all this pan out? I'll elaborate below the jump, but here's a picture to set the scene:
Tumblr media
(Source: Reika Ō, Japanese VA for Gangle and Zooble)
To start with, the Pop-Up Store itself has a number of things aside from merchandise - like the life-size Pomni statue seen above. (The design was the work of Zachary Preciado - it bears a resemblance to her AniMatez figure.)
There's also a corner decorated to look like Kaufmo's room, with a Ragatha (and, at least sometimes, Jax) cutout & oversized die (for sitting on). I believe it's meant to be used for photographs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Sources, from left to right: IshiiNaki and the official Japanese Amazing Digital Circus Twitter account)
Other decorations include curtains, TVs displaying promotional clips (seemingly just existing ones on Glitch's YouTube channel), a floating inflatable replica of Bubble, an equally inflatable kiddie pool holding a whole bunch of plushies for sale, and some giant pseudo-toy blocks. The following pictures collectively show all of these:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Sources, from left to right: Soichiro Sugawara - Japanese VA of Caine & Jax - Shiori Honma - Japanese VA of Ragatha - and Columbo-san Games)
Also, while I'm not currently aware of any recordings of this, according to Arran (Pomni's Japanese VA), the store plays specially-recorded audio of Pomni and Caine. She also mentions "treasured materials" (秘蔵資料) as another point of interest, which segues into my next topic:
Tumblr media
(Sources, from top to bottom: Reika Ō, Columbo-san Games again, Glitch Productions, and Shiori Honma)
Several photographs have a glass display in the background. Thus far, I haven't seen any closer pictures of it - given that there appears to be a "no photography/video recording" placard nearby, that'd explain why. The actual contents aren't especially clear - there's a picture of the main cast doing their bind poses at the back of the case, but the sheets of paper(?) underneath look like they could be concept art or something similar. I'm not sure. Hopefully this gets released later down the line.
With all that said, what about the advance screening? Well, as seen in Glitch's photos of the event, Kevin and Luke made a surprise appearance in person to talk about the series. While the attendees have been told not to reveal anything about the new episode until its wider release on May 3rd, one of them took notes on the experience as a personal reminder and revealed some interesting tidbits in the process. I'm not the best at Japanese, but here's my rough, sometimes rather loose translation of what they wrote:
★ The episode, as well as the announcements before and after it, were dubbed in Japanese. Furthermore, the announcement before the screening was recorded specifically for the occasion. Pretty wild.¹ ∙ Before the show: Caine + Pomni ∙ After the show: Jax ("Good to know it was just a dream"² - this elicited shrieks in the venue) ★ Before the main event began, they played the existing promo videos on a loop in both English & Japanese. ★ I expected the audience to be overwhelmingly female, but in reality there were quite a lot of men in attendance, too. ★ Kevin (the CEO) and Luke frequently said things in Japanese, like "arigatō (thank you)" and "surimasen (excuse me)." The one that made me laugh the most was Kevin saying "…Sō desu ne (Yes, indeed)… (thoughtful)" ★ The reason they held the screening in Japan was twofold: they wanted to help spread Western animation to the country & they simply love Japan. ★ Episode 2 really is good, but my brain hasn't fully processed it right now, so it's better not to get your hopes too high.³ 🥲✨✊
¹ Originally "やば" (yaba), which appears to be a variant of "やばい" (yabai). This word can mean many different things - literally "terrible" or "very bad," but also used as slang for "great" or "far-out" - and I felt that "wild" was a reasonably apt choice for this context. ² Another attendee's comments on Twitter reference this quote as well. ³ To be absolutely clear: this appears to be a warning against unreasonably high expectations (since the OP hadn't quite digested the episode at the time of writing), not discouraging getting hyped to any degree.
Another attendee had a shorter account of the experience, summed up in two tweets. (Again, please forgive me if there are any errors in these translations!)
I was chosen and went to the advance screening…! I definitely didn't expect there to be specially-recorded voice work and art (to remind people of their manners) before the show… Especially Jax's closing remarks: "'You all can leave through the exit. Ah, [but] that's none of my business." It was way too crazy, hearing the voices of the agonized nerds in the venue. It was great lol Two producers made a surprise trip to Japan and took part in a Q&A session. They said that Popee the Performer was one of the show's influences!
(It's worth noting that Gooseworx herself has mentioned Popee as an influence in the past before, specifically saying Jax and Gangle were respectively inspired by Popee and Kedamono - though, in both cases, she also mentioned that there was more to her characters than just resembling the latter two.)
To finish this post off, here's a couple more images (both posted on Twitter by Shiori Honma) I wanted to share:
Tumblr media
Honma posts with her character's standee.
Tumblr media
All five of the Japanese dub's primary voice actors, together with Pomni. (If I'm not mistaken, the tweet's text says none of them knew in advance that the screening of episode 2 would be in Japanese.)

Hey! I saw that you published some books (looking forward to checking them out, actually), but I was wondering how you did that? I'm not out of high school yet, but I've already finished my first draft of book one of my series, and have been working on editing and fixing up the second draft. I do have an editor, which is nice. I was wondering how you published? Any advice/ info would be greatly appreciated!
Hey, cool! My first book legit came out when I was still in high school.
I'm an indie author, so I'll talk about indie stuff... and traditional... and oh dear that's a lot.
Let's go over some pros and cons and what to expect.
Crow's (oops not) Quick Guide to Publishin'
Self Publishing:
Tumblr media
This is what I did for Good Angel, Bad End, my duology!
Self pubbing:
+Total control of end product +No deadlines +Full control of changing it at any time -You do all the work (or pay) -It costs you money for jobs you can't (or shouldn't) do yourself like editing -Extremely limited reach of audience, very hard to sell
I queried GA/BE around a bit but ultimately decided to self publish it. It's just too niche for mainstream, being a weird genre mix up with way too queer characters. Multiple neopronouns used by funky angels in magic school slice of life that turns apocalyptic? yeah, I felt it'd be best I just put it out.
You'll need to
Edit the text (I'd recc multiple friends, a paid editor)
Proofread the text (I'd recc paying a pro)
Assemble the text files formatting (for digital, print)
Get a cover
Make pages for it on GoodReads etc and promote it
Self-publishing can be a lot of work. I did GA/BE's interiors myself using first Microsoft word, then adobe indesign for the recent revamp. Using Word/other text programs can give you a fully workable interior file, but abusing the free trial system of adobe will allow more advanced inclusions. Getting ebook files to work is a nightmare, and print can also be a pain- it's a lot of following online tutorials and trial and error I found. Calibre then is the program you use to finish digital files for release.
Costs for editing can be very high. Editing is a high skill, high time job- I got my books done on discount from a friend for next to nothing, but expect definitely a few hundred bucks. Research though fair prices. You don't need to hire someone to proofread or edit, but it is a good idea. That or outsource to many friends, ideally ones who give honest feedback. A proofreader is much cheaper as they only look for errors, I again got it cheap for 65£ per book. Art wise, I bought mine on commission- talk to an artist and make it clear it is for a commercial project and that you have the right to sell the end result. My cover for each book was about 100£
You might notice this is adding up to a few hundred quid, and yes: it cost me like, 350£ or so per book to publish, even with myself doing a lot of the work. This is a lot! Does it pay back? Usually no. I have at this point now "made a profit", but it took years. You can't typically go into self publishing looking for profit.
I really enjoy self publishing GA. It meant I could put a project out that I kinda only made for me, and have full rights to do whatever I want with it. I got to design the cover and choose what to do at every step... but it was a crazy amount of intensive work too. Marketing wise I've found is about impossible- your best bet 100% is to send the book to as many people as possible (digitally) for review and just try to get enough people reading it. Then you hope they like it and talk about it. I've found no other method of marketing particularly useful: word of mouth is still king.
Indie Publishing:
Tumblr media
Indie pubbin:
+Don't have to spend any money (get paid) +Professional editing/cover/formatting +Backing of publishing house's marketing team -Deadlines -Less creative control -Contracted -Must query and be accepted
My first book was Angel Radio, which actually I sold when I was 17. came out when I was 18. The timescale for traditional publishing, even indie, is typically at least a year.
There's a lot of indie publishers out there, and we should read them more often. However, being published by an indie publisher (aka, a small, non-mainstream one- unlikely to ever be 'on shelves') takes extra, different work.
Do your research!!! There's a LOT of scam publishers out there. A publisher will never, ever, not even slightly ever, charge you money or pressure you to spend money (like buying your own copies of the book). A great way to check is to just look up 'publisher name + scam'.
Prepare a query letter. This is a pitch for your book, basic book info, and a bit about you. Every publishing house will have a 'submissions' page which explains specific wants (such as several pages of your book or a synopsis), so every application is slightly custom.
Query and wait. It takes many weeks to hear back with queries. Usually you should do them in small batches of like five. It's very rare to get a deal- it may not be your book, it might just be market trends or they already got a book about dragons on order.
DOUBLE CHECK YOUR CONTRACT. Contracts can be hard, so seek help if you want, though I've found my one contract to be not that long and readable. Still, you should always read a contract, especially as a scam publisher might try to trick you there.
Indie publishing is good because... it's more accessible and diverse than mainstream, but still offers the same benefits to authors. Just on a way smaller scale. I don't think my publisher, Harmony Ink Press, did much jack or shit for me marketing wise, and that's pretty typical. Marketing is very hit or miss and very expensive, so the onus is still on you to market (spoilers, these days marketing is on you no matter what). You also have more leeway in edits and covers- I designed AR's rough cover and worked with the artist directly! That's uncommon.
Most indie publishers also have a common royalty scheme where you pay it back. This isn't a hallmark of a scam, it's pretty normal: You get advance cash upfront, but then do not earn royalties until your book has paid itself off. Which it may not. Angel Radio sold for 500$, not a huge amount but not exactly tiny, especially for a teen. But I haven't earned a penny on royalties because it never sold well enough! I think I'm a little over halfway there.
Traditional Publishing
(I don't have a book of this type. yet...?)
Y'know, like, books?
+Large advance +Big support team +Marketing +Books on shelves +Most lucrative and recognizable -Sharper deadlines -Least control and rights -Must query (hardcore mode) -Still marketing yourself
Traditional publishing is the longest timescale and hardest method. Obvs. You again are looking to write a good query, but now you need to go through a literary agent. You query an agent with your book (again, should only ever be free), the agent then essentially queries publishers on your behalf ("out on submission"). An agent is your liaison to the business of publishing, taking a portion of your earnings for the service. You just can't make it into publishing without an agent.
A query letter ideally is... roughly, quickly, this is my format guide.
Hi there [actual agent name]
I'm here proposing my cool book, XYZ of ABC, a GENRE book of ??k words that IS SOMETHING UNIQUE SELLING POINT. MAIN CHARACTER is LIKE THIS but faced CONFLICT when PLOT HAPPENS, in SOME KINDA WORLD OR WHATEVER. THIS IS THE PART WHERE YOU WRITE A 2-3 SENTENCE PLOT BLURB. But when TWIST happens, will MC have SOME EYECATCHING IDEA? This book will appeal to fans of THIS KINDA THING and is extra good because RELEVENT DETAIL LIKE OWNVOICES. I believe JUST KEEP SELLING KID. I myself SOME SORT OF ACCOMPLISHMENT LIKE UNI, PAIRED WITH A RELEVANT HOBBY. thank you for your time
Hot and dirty, something like that. You gotta recall at all times this is a market. It is economic. Your passion... matters, but uh. It doesn't matter. Gosh that sounds rough. But make your passion clear but your sound business proposal clearer: You need to show why your book is worth picking over thousands of other queries.
Querying is a horrible torturous process that does help you slowly build up exposure therapy to rejection and failure. Anyways, that will take a bit typically (I've been querying on and off for ten years for an agent, but a lot has been 'off' time). Then you wait and eventually, bam! Probably post some edits, your book is sold.
You still wait a long time though, and have a lot of work to do. So much work. Your book will come out on shelves at the end, sure, but that's still not a promise of success. The author these days is especially the product, and while you start on a higher stage (maybe even the marketing team will f---ing do something), you still gotta claw. There's a high level of scrutiny too on debut authors on any tier, but especially the traditional publishing tier. So your success is very dependent on each book you do, with it being harder and harder to sell books if you aren't doing fantastic.
Still, it's hard to deny the appeal of that mainstream success. Man, I'm chasing it myself! But it's not just easy book out there you go. I'm pals with traditionally published authors and you'll still be very busy, if you can get your foot on the ladder with an agent to begin with. Being on submission generally takes months, and even when your book is with a publisher it may be a lot of time and work before it ever comes out. Even then, hitting the shelves still doesn't mean you're set for life.
Still. Good luck. Go try!
(BTW look at my books, I guess, as a sticker on what I hope is good advice, and good luck! I first decided to try publishing Angel Radio with HIP because of a post by someone else published by them on tumblr... like 10 years ago now....)

i quit (ranting of an adhd adult in the 'normal' world)
DISCLAIMER - I HAVE NOT BEEN CLINICALLY DIAGNOSED WITH ADHD (I NEVER SAW A PROFESSIONAL BECAUSE I LIVE IN A SOCIETY WHERE SEEKING MENTAL HELP IS LOOKED DOWN UPON AND I CAN'T HELP IT). I PLAN TO SEE A DOCTOR WHEN I MOVE TO ANOTHER COUNTRY (WHICH IS GOING TO BE IN 9 MONTHS). BUT I HAVE SO FAR, RELATED TO ALL THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ADHD, SO THERE'S THAT.
i have decided i'm quitting the depressing world of forced productivity and capitalist consumerism.
i have decided i'm quitting the saddening world of being 'relevant'
i have decided i'm quitting the digital world of subliminal slavery to 'self-help' youtubers selling 'productivity' tools that will make me my 'best' self
i'm done with my platforms telling me i'm not good enough, i'm not doing enough, i'm not consistent enough.
i embrace my learning skills in ways that are seemingly uncommon, i embrace my empathy towards the world and towards myself, i embrace me for all that i am.
endless planning for productivity and spending my savings on these apparently self-help tools have only made me more and more anxious. i was a straight A student in my early and high school years but in my undergraduate i dipped and do not ask about my mental health as a postgraduate student. i was doing just fine, more than fine actually, when i wasn't trying to 'fix' myself and 'improve' myself. i learnt so many skills, exceled academically, maintained good relationships and just had top mental health.
but i entered uni and then i entered the youtube era of productivity and self help and 'time management' and i have been hitting new lows every 6 month. as an adhd person, my life really was better when i didn't succumb to the pressure of the 'normal'' influencers to do more, and be my "best" version.
i'm still going to continue striving for my goals and my dream life, but in ways that serve me and make me better. they look nothing like what i see on productivity spaces online. my learning days look like studying for 15 hours straight and then taking 6 days off and then doing it again. is it the best way to learn? HELL NO. does it work for me? HELL YES. the information i learn in those 10 hours stays with me for the next 6 years. i can retain information better when i'm deep focussing. i always thought i was wasting those 6 days, but i m not. there are things like hobbies, and 'fixation' passions and i like those things about me. they teach me so many new things. i'm done trying to quit being myself, my authentic self. i'm going to own myself.
this is not a hate note for anyone. this is more of a frustrated rant of me trying to fix what isn't even broken. i know i live in a world where if i'm not following the rat race, i'm left behind but i have my own ways and i will work with those and i'm sure i'll make it out just fine. at least better than how i currently am. for someone who made productivity their whole aesthetic, you can imagine how truly damaged and broken i must've gotten to be here, writing this note.
there is nothing wrong with being the way i am. i will find my way to blend in this world. i do not have to follow youtube productivity systems to get where i want to.
if you've read this far and you're struggling with all this too, here are a few youtube videos that helped me break the chains that were holding me behind. these videos really did set my mind free in ways i cannot explain. check them out if you want :)

Recommend dinosaur media besides Jurassic Park?
Dinotopia: All the books are super fun, but the first and last are the best. Just some rambling, cozy journeys through an imagined land of prehistoric beasts and eclectic architecture. The middle two books are still great in terms of visuals, but they lean too much into narrative stuff and I don't think that's Gurney's strong point. The writing feels a lot more like a child's first chapter book. Maybe that's what he was going for, I'm not sure.
Tumblr media
Xenozoic Tales: Long time fans of the blog will at this point be tired of me recommending it, but I'm not going to stop because most people I talk to (even other terminally-online SFF artists) still haven't read it. It's obviously super pulpy but it really grows into itself toward the end and is able to handle some more mature ideas without ever taking itself too seriously. Highly recommend.
Tumblr media
An Alphabet of Dinosaurs: Just a great collection of Wayne Barlowe's paleoart. It's a 10-minute read and it's aimed at kids but you're buying it for the art and its one of the only Barlowe books you can reliably pick up for less than $10 so I'd say it's worth it. Good chance your library may have it, too.
Dinosaurs by Thomas R Holtz Jr: Very accessible non-fiction work on dinosaur biology and cladistics. It's probably a bit dated now (came out in 2007) and the art is very hit-or-miss (about half the illustrations are obvious products of the era of early digital art when everyone was photobashing and throwing these awful digital textures onto everything, ugh...) but it remains a fun and informative read. If anyone has a more contemporary but similarly thorough dinosaur book, please let me know! I know there have been a lot of huge discoveries, especially from China, since this book came out.
C. M. Kosemen's (keep track of how many times that name appears on this list) and @simon-roy 's Dinosauroids: This was a HUGE influence on what I wanted to draw and what kind of stories I wanted to tell when I first found it and middle school and it still totally holds up. Check it out here!
Tumblr media
Walking With Dinosaurs: Huge, multi-part BBC documentary from 1999 that presented stories about Mesozoic fauna as if it was a contemporary nature documentary. The CGI for which it was initially so famous is very dated now but the practical effects are great and it's honestly the narration and presentation that sells it anyway. Also recommend Walking With Monsters which is the same thing but for the Paleozoic. People routinely upload both series on youtube, they're not hard to find.
All Yesterdays by Jon Conway, C. M. Kosemen, and Darren Naish: Unique and outrageous reconstructions of dinosaurs and other paleofauna that challenge our preconceptions and highlight the limits of our understanding of their appearance and behavior. Also really cool for me personally because in my lifetime I've seen this book go from a neat project by people I followed on deviantart to being (rightly) considered a landmark in paleoillustration.
Tumblr media
Dino Run: This game bangs and I pity the kids who weren't around in 2008 when this took over the internet for a brief but wonderful period
The Rite of Spring segment from Fantasia: From the big bang to the climactic end of the Mesozoic, all set to Stravinsky. Apparently the only Disney media I enjoy is stuff that The Mouse just does not give a shit about because this one's also on youtube.
That's some stuff off the top of my head, should be enough for now. I may add more if I think of it. Some parting thoughts:
C. M. Kosemen's youtube channel is great for learning about what I'll call "esoteric paleontology" for lack of a better term. Also he just does lots of weird, eclectic videos that I find interesting.
I don't hesitate to recommend Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal because he's literally never disappointed me and everyone I know says it's great, but I personally have not yet gotten around to watching it.
I don't promote pseudoscience, but I do think David Peters is a funny guy with weird, neat ideas. TLDR this one guy has a bunch of fringe theories about pterosaur biology and believes that because literally no one else agrees with him that he must be being censored by "mainstream science." Don't believe any of it, just enjoy the weirdness.
Any time you can pick up a dinosaur or other paleofauna book secondhand, I recommend you do it. Tons of outdated and cheap books that nonetheless contain great illustrations. That kinda stuff is a constant source of inspiration for me.
The Land Before Time is probably still great. It's been over a decade since I last watched it, but I have fond memories. Maybe time for a rewatch...

The Dumbphone Boom Is Real
Tumblr media
Will Stults spent too much time on his iPhone, doom-scrolling the site formerly known as Twitter and tweeting angrily at Elon Musk as if the billionaire would actually notice.
Stults’s partner, Daisy Krigbaum, was addicted to Pinterest and YouTube, bingeing videos on her iPhone before going to sleep.
Two years ago, they both tried Apple’s Screen Time restriction tool and found it too easy to disable, so the pair decided to trade out their iPhones for more low-tech devices.
They’d heard about so-called dumbphones, which lacked the kinds of bells and whistles—a high-resolution screen, an app store, a video camera—that made smartphones so addictive.
But they found the process of acquiring one hard to navigate.
“The information on it was kind of disparate and hard to get to. A lot of people who know the most about dumbphones spend the least time online,” Krigbaum said. A certain irony presented itself: figuring out a way to be less online required aggressive online digging.
The couple–Stults is twenty-nine, and Krigbaum is twenty-five—saw a business opportunity.
“If somebody could condense it and simplify it to the best options, maybe more people would make the switch,” Krigbaum said.
Tumblr media
In late 2022, they launched an e-commerce company, Dumbwireless, to sell phones, data plans, and accessories for people who want to reduce time spent on their screens.
This wasn’t Stults’s first attempt at entrepreneurship; his past efforts included a made-in-America clothing brand in Colorado
(“That went under,” he said) and a coffee shop in the back of an ill-attended Hollywood comedy club (“A doomed enterprise,” Krigbaum said).
Dumbwireless, however, has been much more successful.
youtube
The couple’s home, in East Los Angeles, has turned into a kind of dumbphone emporium, with five hundred boxed devices stacked up in what was supposed to be a dining room.
Stults takes business calls on his personal cell, and on one recent morning the first call came at 5 A.M.
(As the lead on customer service, he has to use a smartphone—go figure.)
They pack each order by hand, sometimes with handwritten notes.
They have not yet quit their day jobs, which are in the service industry, but Dumbwireless sold more than seventy thousand dollars’ worth of products last month, ten times more than in March, 2023.
Krigbaum and Stults noticed an acceleration in sales last October, which they speculate may have had something to do with the onslaught of holiday-shopping season.
Some of their popular phone offerings include the Light Phone, an e-ink device with almost no apps; the Nokia 2780, a traditional flip phone; and the Punkt., a calculator-ish Swiss device that looks like something designed for Neo to carry in “The Matrix” (which, to be fair, is a movie of the dumbphone era).
The growing dumbphone fervor may be motivated, in part, by the discourse around child safety online.
Parents are increasingly confronted with evidence that sites like Instagram and TikTok intentionally try to hook their children.
Using those sites can increase teens’ anxiety and lower their self-esteem, according to some studies, and smartphones make it so that kids are logged on constantly.
Why should this situation be any healthier for adults?
After almost two decades with iPhones, the public seems to be experiencing a collective ennui with digital life.
So many hours of each day are lived through our portable, glowing screens, but the Internet isn’t even fun anymore.
We lack the self-control to wean ourselves off, so we crave devices that actively prevent us from getting sucked into them.
That means opting out of the prevailing technology and into what Cal Newport, a contributing writer for The New Yorker, has called a more considered “digital minimalism.”
Tumblr media
The Light Phone débuted in 2017, before smartphone exhaustion became a mainstream ailment.
Tumblr media
The company’s co-founders, Kaiwei Tang and Joe Hollier, have sold tens of thousands of phones.
youtube
The Light Phone II, released in 2019, features a monochrome touch screen that allows users to make calls, send text messages, and use a few custom apps: an alarm and timer, a calendar, directions, notes, music and podcast libraries.
There are no social-media apps or streaming apps.
“The point is to create useful utility that does not have the attention economy built in,” Tang said.
Like Dumbwireless, Light Phone has recently been experiencing a surge in demand.
From 2022 to 2023, its revenue doubled, and it is on track to double again in 2024, the founders told me.
youtube
Hollier pointed to Jonathan Haidt’s new book, “The Anxious Generation,” about the adverse effects of smartphones on adolescents.
Light Phone is receiving increased inquiries and bulk-order requests from churches, schools, and after-school programs.
In September, 2022, the company began a partnership with a private school in Williamstown, Massachusetts, to provide Light Phones to the institution’s staff members and students; smartphones are now prohibited on campus.
According to the school, the experiment has had a salutary effect both on student classroom productivity and on campus social life.
Tang told me, “We’re talking to twenty to twenty-five schools now.”
To Tang and Hollier’s surprise, some of the most willing Light Phone converts are Gen Z-ers.
Some of them are younger than the iPhone.
Digital technology has been an inevitable feature of their lives, yet they are also better equipped, or better motivated, than generations past to confront its negative impacts.
Apple recently allowed third-party developers to write software that accesses the iPhone’s Screen Time function, meaning that some new programs can now help users limit their screen time by blocking apps.
Tumblr media
T. J. Driver and Zach Nasgowitz, two engineers in their early twenties, took advantage of this change to create an iPhone accessory called Brick, to fight their own excessive phone usage.
Brick, which launched in September of 2023, is a magnetized plastic cube with a corresponding app that allows you to select which features you want to block on your smartphone.
Tapping the brick activates or lifts the blockage.
Driver and Nasgowitz started with one 3-D printer to produce the accessories; now they have fifteen machines running around the clock and are shipping a few hundred products a day.
There is no one dumbphone solution for everyone.
Each digital addict is addicted in her own way.
Tumblr media
Stults, of Dumbwireless, uses an app called Unpluq, which works similarly to Brick, blocking specific apps from his smartphone while allowing him to maintain the store’s customer-service channels, including e-mail and Shopify.
Krigbaum has been a committed Light Phone user for the past two years.
She said that she doesn’t miss her smartphone, but that her new device can cause some awkwardness when she meets other young people who ask how to keep in touch.
They mean on social media, of course; for the vast swath of Gen Z-ers who don’t use dumbphones, exchanging numbers to text message or, God forbid, call seems archaic. “I’ve been saying, ‘I guess I’ll see you if I see you,’ ” Krigbaum said.
When I want to escape from my iPhone, I pop the SIM card out (which, unfortunately, is not possible on some newer iPhones) and install it in a red Nokia 2780 flip phone—the closing snap of which brings me back instantly to my high-school days, when flip phones were cutting edge.
After the surprisingly easy switching process, I take the simple device with me on my daily walks with my dog.
If I had my smartphone in hand, I’d be refreshing Instagram or compulsively checking my e-mail while my hound does her business or sniffs tree trunks.
With the Nokia, I’ve cut myself off from such meaningless digital stimuli but preserved my ability to answer texts or phone calls if necessary. (I’m too much of a millennial to actually leave the house without any phone.)
I find myself looking more at my surroundings, which are particularly enjoyable in springtime, and I am more relaxed when I return from the excursions.
When I switch the SIM card back into my iPhone, the device seems momentarily absurd: an enormous screen filled with infinite entertainment and information that follows me wherever I go.
Then I open all my usual apps in quick succession—e-mail, Instagram, Slack—to see what I’ve missed.
The Dawn of the Dumb House
When the interior designer Ken Fulk begins working with new clients, he asks them to fill out a “Fulkfessional,” a form with questions to help him understand what matters most to them at home.
Among his favorite questions lately is “Dumb house or smart house?”
The answer is everything.
The philanthropist Christine Schantz knew exactly what she wanted for her historic 1925 home in Marin County.
She tasked Fulk (and architect Andrew Skurman) with creating a residence that could last 30 years without another renovation.
All those smart flourishes that are the rage these days—automated fixtures, complex lighting systems, remote-controlled appliances, charging stations, electronic security systems, and, everyone’s favorite, Alexa—went out the window.
Schantz didn’t want a SpaceX command station but a family retreat.
“Technology doesn’t go with that,” she says.
Homeowners like Schantz aren’t hardcore technophobes.
They would just like fewer remotes, gizmos, and wires in their personal space, and they’re turning to their decorators, architects, and contractors to make houses that are, if not dumb, then dumbish.
Perhaps not coincidentally, the trend is gaining favor with the most cutting-edge cohort of all; call them the Low-Key Luddites of Silicon Valley.
“Many of my clients who work in the technology world tend to forgo highly advanced homes often because they are acutely aware of change,” Fulk says.
What they want, he adds, are environments that age gracefully without frequent, irksome updates.
The Design Rules of the Modern Dumb House:
Keep traditional kitchen appliances out of sight and focus on bold color–such as this vivid share of robin’s egg blue.
All fixtures and cabinet hardware are by the Nanz Company.
Rule: Go old school with cookware–very old school.
The collection of enameled cast iron pots and pans is from Staub.
The pendant lights are by Studio Van den Akker.
To step inside an anti-smart house like Schantz’s, seen here, is to find a feast for the eyes steeped in handiwork that feels closer to the past than the future: artisanal millwork, detailed plaster, light switches that look like old fashioned brass toggles.
The doorbell is manual (“a Victorian hand-turn that I purchased myself,” Schantz says), the bookcases are filled with hardbacks, and family knickknacks and photographs are not relegated to the attic or uploaded to an iPad but thoughtfully displayed.
“We often hear clients say that they don’t want a home that’s smarter than they are,” says the design legend Holly Hunt. “The appeal of being able to control your home while on vacation is obvious, but what happens when things go wrong and you can’t get through to tech support while you’re on the other side of the world?”
Rule:
Take the low-tech look to the next level with bespoke wallpaper illustrated with favored real and imaginary titles, executed in the powder room by Ken Fulk, and a custom, marble, wood, and leather vanity by Merritt Woodwork, with faux-book detailing.
The idea of the smart home goes back decades. In pop culture it is depicted everywhere from Dr. Frankenstein’s lab to John Lautner’s 1960 Los Angeles house the Chemosphere (the inspiration for The Jetsons and a longtime movie backdrop) to, more recently, the 2014 film Ex Machina. In Woody Allen’s Sleeper (1973) a health food store owner is cryogenically frozen and defrosted 200 years later in a glass house designed by Charles Deaton full of robots. In the real world, the launch of the first general-purpose home automation network technology, dubbed X10, came in 1975.
a living room with a chandelier and a couch Douglas Friedman
In the living room, a Silvio Piatelli chandelier, a table lamp by Cym Warkov Ceramics, and Chesterfield sofas by Coup d’etat.
In 1999 Microsoft’s “Home of the Future” promotional video imagined a middle-class family house with seamless voice-activated and integrated lighting, heating, security, and entertainment systems. By 2012 the ad was becoming a reality: 1.5 million home automation systems had been installed in the United States, according to data firm ABI Research, and by 2020 the industry was valued at $44 billion.

Rule: No TV, Alexa, or electronics in the bedroom. And keep lighting simple. The chandelier is by Fabio LTD, and the reading pendants are by Allied Maker. Rule: Prioritize neutral elements: fresh flowers and forest wallpaper, here by Cole & Sons. The wicker nightstands are by Portuguese design studio Emotional Brands.
The shift away from overly digitized homes, at least for some, has been a long time coming, spurred first by a growing awareness of the health risks of too much screen time and later accelerated by the erosion of work-life balance during the pandemic. The rise of artificial intelligence is a more recent cause for alarm.
“People that I’ve worked with in the tech industry don’t want their kids to have technology,” says the designer Lonni Paul, who has removed computers and other digital devices from the bedrooms and personal spaces in her own home and those of her clients. Erin Lichy, a New York interior designer, has also winnowed the devices in her home in favor of elements that put a premium on calm, not notifications. No cameras, Alexa, or Google Assistant for her.
a bedroom with a bed and chairs Douglas Friedman
In the primary bedroom, the wallpaper is St. Laurent by de Gournay, the ceiling fixture is by Fortuny, the antique desk features a Josef Hoffman lamp by Woka Lamps, and the nightstand lamps are by Lorenza Bozzoli for Tato Italia.
“Similar to in-home cameras, we don’t love the idea of a device constantly listening in on us,” she says. It’s an urgent concern for homeowners at a time when big tech companies are testing ambient intelligence, a concept that futurologists have been talking about for years, in which smart devices make their own decisions based on anything from biometric sensors to predictive behavior modeling.
“Just because it works doesn’t mean it’s a good idea,” Fulk says. “When I come home, especially to a beach house or a ski house, the last thing I want is to have to wrangle with technology.” In the modern dumb home, the only bits of technology present are usually hidden—starting with the TV and including details as small as a light switch. “Whenever I’m redoing a house, I can tell when a house was made in the 2000s, because it was this in-between of trying to be forward-thinking but things still felt really clunky,” says the designer David Ko, who receives an increasing number of requests from his Los Angeles clients to keep entertainment consoles out of sight. His solution: OG projectors, built-in custom furniture, and products like Samsung’s the Frame, which makes television screens look like artworks.
“There’s nothing luxurious about technology anymore,” says the designer Stephanie Roy-Heckl, who largely works in Miami and the Hamptons. Or beautiful, for that matter. A Roomba may be practical, but chic is not the first word that comes to mind to describe one.
a room with a table and chairs Douglas Friedman
In the entry, art works by Jack Wright and Charles Bianchini, a 19th century gueridon with a marble top, millwork by Merritt Woodwork and doorway by Theodore Ellison Designs.
Even if so-called dumb houses aren’t defined by a single aesthetic, they all represent a broader recalibration of homeowners’ relationships with technology. There’s less interest in the latest gadgets and more demand for conscientious innovation, especially in the realms of sustainability, green architecture, and solar power. “In California we’re having a big conversation around gas appliances and their impact on the environment and on our health,” Fulk says. That was a priority for Schantz, too, but her domestic digital detox was brought about by a simpler personal conviction.
“I also think technology dumbs us down,” she says. “It makes us forget what’s meaningful and lasting. It gives us terribly short attention spans.” Instead, her home has something AI never will: soul.

First editions and rare books line bookshelves backed in wallpaper by Zak & Fox, with flourishes by Racké. The CH20 Elbow chairs are by Hans Wegner. Artisanal millwork is by Merritt Woodwork.

Among the various tools and strategies available, Amazon Sponsored Products stand out as a powerful resource for enhancing visibility, driving traffic, and ultimately boosting sales. At Lab 916, we understand the significance of leveraging this advertising solution effectively. In this guide, we delve into the intricacies of Amazon Sponsored Products and unveil how they can propel your brand towards success.
### Understanding Amazon Sponsored Products
Amazon Sponsored Products are pay-per-click (PPC) ads that promote individual product listings on the platform. These ads appear prominently within search results and on product detail pages, making them highly visible to potential customers. Leveraging relevant keywords and targeting options, advertisers can effectively reach their target audience and drive traffic to their product listings.
### Advantages of Amazon Sponsored Products
1. **Increased Visibility**: Sponsored Products allow brands to place their products in front of shoppers actively searching for similar items. By appearing prominently in search results, sponsored listings enhance visibility and attract potential customers' attention.
2. **Targeted Reach**: With advanced targeting options, advertisers can tailor their campaigns to reach specific demographics, interests, or purchasing behaviors. This precision targeting ensures that ads are displayed to relevant audiences, maximizing the chances of conversion.
Tumblr media
3. **Cost-Effective Advertising**: Amazon Sponsored Products operate on a PPC model, meaning advertisers only pay when a user clicks on their ad. This cost-effective approach allows brands to manage their budgets efficiently while maximizing the return on investment (ROI).
4. **Performance Tracking**: Amazon provides comprehensive analytics and reporting tools to track the performance of Sponsored Products campaigns. Advertisers can monitor key metrics such as clicks, conversions, and sales, allowing them to optimize their campaigns for better results.
### Strategies for Success with Amazon Sponsored Products
1. **Keyword Optimization**: Conduct thorough keyword research to identify relevant search terms and phrases used by your target audience. Incorporate these keywords strategically into your product titles, descriptions, and backend search terms to improve visibility and relevance.
2. **Campaign Structuring**: Organize your Sponsored Products campaigns into well-defined ad groups based on product category, target audience, or keyword theme. This structured approach makes it easier to manage and optimize your campaigns effectively.
Tumblr media
3. **Bid Management**: Monitor and adjust your keyword bids regularly to ensure optimal ad placement and cost efficiency. Focus on high-performing keywords that drive conversions while adjusting bids for underperforming keywords to improve ROI.
4. **Ad Creative Optimization**: Craft compelling ad copy and imagery that highlights the unique selling points of your products. Use clear and engaging language, high-quality images, and relevant product information to capture users' attention and encourage clicks.
5. **Continuous Optimization**: Regularly review your Sponsored Products campaigns and make data-driven adjustments to improve performance. Test different targeting options, ad creatives, and bidding strategies to identify what works best for your brand.

Unveiling Excellence: Selecting the Best WooCommerce Website Design and Development Company
In the dynamic landscape of e-commerce, establishing a strong online presence is essential for businesses to succeed. WooCommerce, with its flexibility and scalability, has emerged as a popular choice for building online stores within WordPress websites. However, choosing the right WooCommerce website design and development company is crucial for achieving optimal results. In this article, we'll explore the key considerations when selecting a WooCommerce website design and development company.
Expertise and Experience in WooCommerce Development: Begin your search by evaluating the expertise and experience of the WooCommerce website design and development company. Look for a team with a proven track record of working with WooCommerce, WordPress, and related technologies. Their experience will ensure that your online store is built efficiently, customized to your needs, and optimized for performance.
Customization Capabilities: Your e-commerce website should reflect your brand identity and unique selling proposition. Choose a company that offers extensive customization capabilities within the WooCommerce framework. They should be able to tailor your website to align with your brand aesthetics, preferences, and business goals, creating a memorable and cohesive shopping experience for your customers.
Responsive Design Expertise: With the increasing prevalence of mobile shopping, having a responsive website is essential. Ensure that the WooCommerce website design and development company specializes in creating designs that adapt seamlessly to various screen sizes and devices. A mobile-friendly website not only enhances user experience but also improves your site's search engine rankings.
E-Commerce and Conversion Optimization Focus: Building a successful online store goes beyond aesthetics; it needs to drive conversions and generate sales. Look for a company that specializes in e-commerce design and conversion optimization techniques. They should focus on elements such as intuitive navigation, persuasive product presentations, clear call-to-action buttons, and streamlined checkout processes to maximize conversion rates.
SEO Integration and Digital Marketing Support: An effective e-commerce website needs to attract traffic and visibility to succeed. Choose a WooCommerce website design and development company that understands the importance of search engine optimization (SEO) and integrates digital marketing strategies into their design process. From optimizing product pages to implementing metadata and structured data, SEO-friendly features should be integral to the design and development of your online store.
Comprehensive Support and Training: Launching and managing an online store can be complex, so ensure that the WooCommerce website design and development company offers comprehensive support and training services. They should provide assistance with setup, configuration, and ongoing maintenance, as well as training resources to empower you to manage your store effectively.
Portfolio and Client Testimonials: Evaluate the company's portfolio to assess the quality and diversity of their WooCommerce website designs. Look for examples that showcase their expertise in e-commerce design and development. Additionally, read client testimonials and reviews to gain insights into their professionalism, communication, and ability to deliver results.
In conclusion, selecting the best WooCommerce website design and development company is a critical step in ensuring the success of your online store. By considering factors such as expertise in WooCommerce development, customization capabilities, responsive design expertise, e-commerce and conversion optimization, SEO integration, support and training, and client testimonials, you can make an informed decision that sets your online store up for success. Entrust your WooCommerce website to a partner that not only creates visually stunning designs but also prioritizes functionality, usability, and conversion-driven strategies to help your e-commerce business thrive.
