The Irritable Bowel Showdown competitors have been decided!!!

Thank you for your patience, everyone! The participants have been chosen, the bracket has been tentatively created, and preparations for Round One are underway!!!

Thank you for the feedback on my poll about the number of participants. Although the option for accepting further submissions had the most support, after narrowing down the eligible participants to 102, I decided it would be best to continue with the current number so the tournament could begin! As a result, some characters with a higher seeding will automatically move to the second round to accommodate the awkward number of competitors.

Okay so I have a thought (spoilers for Half Life VR But the AI is Self-Aware btw)

I remember when I first watched through HLVRAI and saw all the shit that happened to Gordon, yadda yadda yadda, you know how it goes

And watching it the first time was a little fucking jarring, you know

Like you have to listen to fucking Gordon groaning in pain and being betrayed by his friends and then having to battle Benrey, it's awful

And then the second time I watched it, knowing what I was in for, I realized

...the name of the series is Half-Life VR But the AI is Self-Aware.

This is a video game series.

Gordon is being played by a person in the real world.

Why is all of this so greatly affecting him?

"Oh Wayne said that Gordon just had to pretend to be in pain or scared for the sake of the AIs!"

Aside from the fact that at least two of the AIs know that they aren't real (Coomer and Benrey, though by the Payday 2 stream I imagine all four of the AIs know that they're video game characters), a huge chunk of Act Three Part 2 is Gordon, by himself, in pain and freaking out over the betrayal. NO ONE was around him - not Benrey, not Bubby, not Coomer, not even Tommy was close enough for him hearing Gordon to be a concern. He sounds like he's actually in pain in this portion, like he is actively wincing and groaning and just overall having a shit time.

Now, I'm not saying that the player (because it doesn't specify that Wayne and the person who "found" the AI are the same person, the description for the playlist just says "a streamer" discovered the game) somehow got sucked into the game or anything like that because like, clearly he wasn't - Coomer straight up says later in that video that Gordon has "a world in [his] dreams", meaning that the player can still exit the game and interact with the real world.

But I do have to wonder what the description meant by saying the AI "[changed] [the streamer's] life forever".

Okay I have never ever watched or played anything Half Life and everything I have ever seen about this game has been from you. Why is Benry a catboy in some drawings but not others? Is he really not catboy representation? Are there canon trans characters? /gen /lh

Okay so! HLVRAI isn't Half Life, there is a difference. Half Life VR but the AI is Self Aware (or HLVRAI) is... A little hard to explain. It's basically like. A comedy series where the main character is in VR, the other characters are basically actors in Gmod fucking around, and they're VEEEERY loosely following the plot of Half Life (with major changes). Also it's the greatest thing you will ever watch in your life it's on YouTube go watch it it's comedy gold they wipe out the US military

Basically, the protagonist is Gordon Freeman, the "straight" man to the rest of the Science Team who are all fucking weirdos and I love them. You have Tommy, who drinks soda for lunch because it helps him see faster and has a drawer full of tictacs (he's the most normal one besides Gordon); Bubby, who was created in a tube and is a fucking asshole (affectionate); Dr Coomer, who's a bit of a glitchy tutorial character and honestly anything else I could say about Dr Coomer you have to experience for yourself holy fuck; and then you have Benrey. He's Benrey. I could try to describe Benrey but I think I'd fail. He's a gamer. He's an eldritch horror. He breaks laws regularly. He refuses to let the protagonist break the law. He's a fucking creature. He just wants to play video games. He's head over heels for the protagonist. He and the protagonist hate each others guts. He's in a love-hate relationship with Gordon meanwhile Gordon's in a hate-hate relationship with him. He won't let you do shit without your passport (and it's a major plot point). He was even autistic. What a guy lol

Be warned that if you do watch it, there's a lot of blood, guns are the main weapon, there are some NSFW jokes, and in Act 3 onwards there are themes of unreality and suicide (actually I wouldn't really call suicide a theme, it's just that one of the characters is canonically incredibly suicidal). If blood or guns are a squick or a trigger for you I'd recommend skipping out on the series as there is. A lot of that. There aren't many NSFW jokes in the whole series (and the ones there are personally make me a sex repulsed ace lose my fucking mind but that's just me), but they are still there, especially in the second half. And the unreality and sucide stuff only really comes up in Act 3 onwards.

(And to the sadness of all, Benrey is not a catboy. However the fandom collectively agrees that if one member of the Science Team had to be a catboy it'd be him so he's a catboy at heart)

As for trans rep, there are no canon trans characters (although everyone collectively agrees there's no way any of these fuckers are cis), BUT Dr Coomer's actress IS a trans woman, and take this one with a grain of salt but my good friend @dimonds456 told me that there's apparently a clip where in a game where she was chasing them around in a game with a sword and repeating "Gordon Freeman miku binder."

I have NO IDEA what the FUCK was going on, what the context was, what the fuck she meant, any of that shit but uh. Gordon might be canon trans. And use a miku binder. Do with this information what you will.

HLVRAI (Half Life: VR, but the AI is self aware)

Info-dump (mostly about a specific power): The series is about the main character being a VR player who plays Half Life, which has sentient AI. The story at the beginning is a bit more improve then story. There are different levels of sentience, some AI (for example an old scientist named Dr.Coomer) seem to know of the real world and breaks the forth wall more then the others. There is a thing in the series called a Sweet Voice, which is best described as a beam of bubbles being sang out of someone’s or something’s mouth (it can be a dog or a “human”), it can have a calming effect on the person that has the beam “sang” at them. Also, colors seem to mean different things when it comes to the beam here are some examples:

“Teal means he needs a meal”,

“Green to Blue means it’s nice to meet you”,

“Green means his not mean”,

“Blue to Green means it’s time to be mean”

Info-dump: The beam can also have healing qualities as can be seen from a character said that teal and green is a healing beam, but it hasn’t been yet shown in the series. The Sweet Voice can also: cocoon people, calm people down (as stated above, but could also very likely cause a change to different emotions, seeing as the blue one is calming), although it is usually a way to show emotions and to some extant because of that is a language.

Main Characters:

Gordon Freeman (the main character and a player, he is the straight man of the group, he is also a theoretical physicist and has a son named Joshua), he also lost his right arm which is a spoiler on how he lost it, just know the series did a disservice here by making him get it back at the end of the story),

Benrey (the eldritch being I talked about, he is a security guard at the science lab called Black Mesa where the action is taking place),

Bubby (old man scientist, he is actually a human made in the lab, and has some pyrokinesis powers),

Dr. Coomer (old man scientist, he is the muscle of the group and also a bit of a broken record when it comes to saying some information, he has technological and mechanical enhancements connected to his limps.)

Tommy Coolatta (son of G-Man (who seems to be an all powerful being business man guy who can stop time), he loves soda and acts way younger then he is (the guy is 36 and acts like a child, that he seems younger then Gordon). He also has a dog named Sunkist, it’s a giant golden retriever which he made in a lab, the dog is immortal as he stated.)

Specific: Cosmic Horror to some extent.

Time to finish series: 289 minutes, about 4 hours. (The cut version of the story that is on YouTube)

I know you didn't ask, but I'm gonna explain kin the best I can and hope it makes sense ;;

Otherkin is the belief that one is partly or fully {BUT NOT PHYSICALLY} non-human. Fictionkin is a branch that's similar but with fictional creatures {as in from works of fiction ans not mythos} or characters. Exactly how one's kin will vary from person to person, but the main things agreed upon in the community is you believe it's a true part of you and that you didn't choose what the kintype is {or kintypes are}. For me personally it's all spiritual. These are lives I had.

Anyway, the question you actually asked: Benrey {also spelt Benry} is a character from Half-Life VR but the AI is Self-Aware {shortened to HLVRAI by fans}. It's a mostly improve RP series done in GMod. Because of just how much Benrey can do fans have decided he's some eldritch being and, as such, he has many monster and biblically accurate angel and glitchy mess etc. artwork because he very well could be anything as far as we're concerned. HLVRAI is actually avery humorous and fun watch so I'd recommend it :>

haha yeah theyre pretty different! hlvrai is short for "Half Life VR but the AI is Self-Aware." It's a surreal improv comedy series set in the game Half-Life 1 and done in gmod by a group of twitch streamer friends. You can find it on youtube if you look up the name! Idk how to explain it besides, like....KIND of like if Real Time Fandub Games was doing improv within the game itself instead of just cutscenes? The titular AI (including Benrey) are the npc's you can get to follow you around in HL1, but played by real people pretending to be really weird AI.

Warnings for themes of unreality, violence typical to a first person shooter, high pitched noises, and many instances of strobe effects (typical to HL1, unfortunately)

oh! thankyou!! hdbdjbdd no benrey is from the improv youtube series HLVRAI, or half life but the ai are self aware. its pretty self explanatory but ill explain a Little bit more--a group of friends who are also very good streamers streamed an improv comedy sorta thing in a gmod map of half life, playing in different character models. i dont have the energy to explain in detail right now but its Really good and funny and develops a proper plot around half way through--it has some really nice story beats and characters, and benrey is one of them!! the streams have been edited down and hard-subbed and out up on youtube by one of the creators, wayneradiotv if you wanna check it out!

so. benrey is technically an oc with lots of fans but not mine djdbdjdb--i do have a few comic ideas, two in particular that i want to start sometime, but i havent made them yet so no to that question too gdbdjsb

Benrey (alternatively spelled Benry) is a Black Mesa Security guard, and a main character turned main antagonist of the Half-Life VR But The AI Is Self-Aware saga. He is voiced by Scorpy.

Description

Benrey's model is the standard Half-Life security guard model, though his personality differs greatly from that of a professional security guard. He is shown to possess many inhuman abilities including partial immortality, similar to that of most of the crew, and is best known for using the Black Mesa Sweet Voice to express himself, influence other's emotions, and encase corpses within cocoons. Its possible that Benrey is capable of reviving, or simply living on, as a skeleton for stretches of time, seen stalking the crew during earlier acts before it was later implied that the skeletons were, in fact, also his subordinates.

During the final act, Benrey is seen looming over his realm at a gargantuan size, floating through islands and clipping through walls to stalk the crew. Benrey's visual form later shifts to a gradually incomprehensible mess of stretched 3D limbs and body parts, assumed to be his "final form" or what Wayne later describes as a "contortionist's nightmare," within the boss fight. Once defeated by Gordon, he never returns to this form again, and is seen as having returned completely normal in the post-Act 4 bonus scenes.

Personality

Benrey often seems completely disassociated from reality, and is generally delusional about his surroundings, frequently making ridiculous claims with no basis in reality and accusing Gordon of crimes he could not have committed, while simultaneously ignoring the crimes the other crew had committed, with only one exception. He is also very impatient, supported by how quick he is to kill random scientists, and his leap from the elevator shaft, when en route to the Test Chamber. Benrey and Gordon are bitter enemies throughout the series, as Gordon did not bring his passport to work, resulting in Benrey believing Gordon was a criminal. Benrey repeatedly teases and eggs on Gordon, while also harboring an unrequited crush on him, and at several points in the series he both subtly and blatantly flirts with him, even trying to kiss Gordon during multiple instances.

Benry is somewhat childlike in nature, frequently behaving as though he were a preschooler, such as cheerfully yelling “Road trip!” while Bubby attempts to drive everyone out of Black Mesa, and believing that Lightning McQueen is real. He has a tendency to babble mockingly at other people akin to that of a toddler, and in one instance when Gordon attempts to do the same right back, Benrey only simply raised his voice to silence him.

During Act 4, Benrey becomes gradually more antagonizing towards Gordon in various means, all of which eventually leads to his reveal as the main villain and final boss of the plot. His true motives for becoming the villain are barely understood, as his monologue before the fight is deeply nonsensical and often spouts unrelated statements to the scenario, such as his desire to gain a free month of PlayStation+ to helping Gordon out with a "dick slip." Though still childish in nature, as is seen through him floating around and stalking the crew in his "realm" with various snarky comments and teases, Benrey additionally becomes far more violent towards the crew in the final boss sequence, attacking them until his eventual defeat.

Trivia

His so-called "Realm" is a heavily modified version of Xen from the original Half-Life, and he replaces the Nihilanth as the final boss.

Originally Scorpy wanted to play as if he was a different security guard each time he disappeared, which is why he appears as Stong Boper and Bipple later in Act 1, but this never went anywhere after that.

Like all the other AI-Enhanced NPCs, it's easy to tell them apart because of their animations, taken from the Garry's Mod player models.

In a commentary stream with the voice actors, it is implied that the G-Man is scared of Benrey. This can be seen prominently in Act 4 thanks to Benry's ability to ignore the G-Man's time-freezing abilities.

In the HLVRAI ACAB stream, it is stated that Benrey has no parents, and subsequently picked his own name.Though his name is canonically spelled as Benry by the cast as well as his actor, Wayne has stated that Benrey is the "way a human would spell it," and both versions are correct.

Benrey's name is a play off of the canon reoccurring Half-Life character, Barney Calhoun, who also happens to be a security guard.

In the AI Crushes All Banks charity stream, Benrey hacks into the stream under the alias of "johnwicklover1994," whom he also claims to be his brother, though him and Benrey both share seemingly identical personalities.

Benry's so-called "final form" during the final battle takes on many different iterations; however, it was revealed during a commentary stream that Scorpy had to severely water down one of his forms for the sake of viewers, stating it to initially be too loud, bright, and nauseating for both Wayne and other viewers to look at.

Benrey claims to have killed Forzen.

Benrey can die anytime but always comes back to life. It is also believed that in the final battle of the "Half Life VR:AI"-Series, he survived his defeat.

Benry has achieved marketable plush form and could be bought for a limited time.

Oh boy, a person to read my paragraphs! Welcome to the world of... POKEMON MYSTERY DUNGEON BUT THE AI IS SELF AWARE This AU is based on PMD: Explorers of Sky! If you’re interested in the series/game and don’t want spoilers don’t tread any farther. (I say even though this game is pretty old by video game spoiler standards). Now that I got that out of the way.. Our story starts off with Gordon. He wakes up on the beach with little to no memory, besides there being a storm and that he was once a human. Much to his surprise, he’s a Floatzel now! He is found by Tommy, a Heliolisk, and the two become fast friends. The two form an Exploration team, as it’s always been a dream of Tommy’s. From there eventually Coomer and Bubby join their team (THE SCIENCE TEAM)! They aren’t great at the rescuing pokemon part, but they get their missions done quicker than most teams. For the science team individual backstories I’ll put them under the cut for not wanting a big post.

Gordon is a human turned pokemon and the protagonist. He doesn’t remember much of anything about his past other than 1) he was human 2) he had a son and 3) pokemon.. don’t usually talk. Right??? Tommy is an orphan, he was raised by the guild and grew up there. He was never able to join a rescue team due to some rocky circumstances and never being in the right place or time to join up with anyone. Now he has the science team! Coomer has worked with the guild for many years, but has little ‘field experience’ because he was always tasked to teach the younger exploration teams. In his youth, he used to train and fight with a certain group that eventually grew antagonistic towards the guild. When that group was giving Gordon and Tommy problems, Coomer joined the science team! Bubby was once apart of the guild in town, he considered himself the best there was in his youth. He had the perfect exploration team and everything!.. to perfect. In time, Bubby and his team left the guild due to feeling like their rules were constraining their abilities. Bubby and his team of rogues now caused problems for other exploration teams. That all came crashing down till he decided to mess with Gordon and Tommy, Coomer joins their team and they all fight Bubby. Bubby, defeated, joins them.. and thus THE SCIENCE TEAM IS BORN! Bonus: Darnold has a similar job to Spida’s Cafe, instead it’s Darnold’s Potion Shop! He’s spent his whole life perfecting potions and drinks with the best flavors (and sure to get your HP back in a giffy!) Forzen doesn’t come in till much later, posing as a rumored mysterious traveler with incredible power. He’s on the hunt for two dangerous criminals.. Gman appears in Gordon’s dreams for half the story, eventually they meet up in real life though, usually in spots where time is distorted or frozen. While ever mysterious, he does urge Gordon to take care of his ‘protegee’ aka Tommy. Benrey also doesn’t appear immediately, but as Benrey does his sightings are strange to say the least. There’s something about him that makes Gordon’s head hurt.. with his appearance in the story that’s when spots on the map start to freeze in time. Uh oh!
