Another fanfic rant
People are really demanding of fanfic writers. I just read someone complaining about there not being enough The Bear fanfic, what they read is out of character, Carmy and Syd are written straight, blah, blah.
People can write the characters how they want. We aren’t trying to reproduce the canon show. If we were it wouldn’t be fanfic. I can’t write like the actual screenwriters. Some people try to write close to canon characterization, others don’t. This comment is also contradictory because canon Carmy and Syd aren’t written as not being straight, at least up to this point. So how is fanfic written with them straight out of character? And there are fics with both written as queer, so that’s not even true. Viewers can’t even agree on character interpretation of canon, so how are fanfic writers supposed to “get it right” when it’s all open to interpretation? I literally just read a post from someone who didn’t get that Jon Bernthal is Mikey???!!! Anyways, people can write them however they like. Have people never heard of the terms head canon, reinterpretation, and AU?
People need to write themselves or stop complaining.
Also, you know what, the time and effort, I’ll say again, is only partially rewarded. I bet most of the complainers don’t bother to comment, give kudos, or share works they do like. Heck, I leave positive comments and kudos even if I wasn’t thrilled with a story. There is always something good to highlight and gives encouragement.
I’ve written 17 chapters so far and have three to go. I am at a bit of a standstill. Why? I don’t always want to be writing. I write a lot for work and have other creative projects. Sometimes I want to just fangirl on Tumblr, which takes way less effort than constructing narrative. I also have a full life outside of fandom. I’m pretty social and have friendships to maintain and places to go. I may not get a lot of writing done the next two months. Why? It’s summer. I live in NYC. The weather mostly sucks here so when it’s nice I don’t want to spend hours at home, inside, writing. And if I am inside, maybe I want to read, watch a movie or show, clean my apartment, do a facial or manicure, cook. I dunno, other normal things. I was beating myself up about that, but whatevs. There is so much cool stuff going on, I’m going to do it. I work hard to play hard. Today I was supposed to go to the beach for a party but it’s storming so I’m trapped inside. I may write, or I may just chill because honestly I’m hungover from my fun day yesterday and don’t know how much mental energy I feel like exerting.
I’m not going to be beholden to produce works at rapid pace to meet demand that isn’t as appreciated as it should be.
So y’all will get chapter 18 at some point. It may not please everyone, but it will please me, and will be completed in my own time.
Thanks to all the readers who are great fans of fic writers! The ones who aren’t overly critical, leave comments, give kudos, reblog, and are patient are gold. We love you!

Hey Kazzy!! I hope you've enjoyed your travels and thank you for all the lovely comments, reblogs, tags, and such over the last evening. I woke up feeling all kinds of internet hugs! To the questions!! (Can I send you some asks back??)
Since I write novels in these things, the responses are below the cut
💝what is a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?
Burned Super
Two things kind of factor in my surprise at the response for that one. First, I started writing fanfiction in the early 2000s and fandoms we're not as pleasant as they are now. Even the SwanFire / SwanQueen / CaptainSwan debate is tame compared to how awful people were to fic writers and such back then. So, I am still adjusting to the acceptance that we have as writers these days.
But, the second reason is that it was the most self-indulgent thing that I have ever penned outside of my own journal. I had a day - one of those that everything I touched was a disaster. At the very end of the day, I was holding on to my emotions by the thinnest thread and then the stupid carrots would not cook. I've roasted carrots 1000000000x and for whatever reason these carrots just would not roast and I felt that little thread give. And, I kind of wanted to crumble into a pile on the kitchen floor and cry about the carrots, but really about the, well, the everything that day. So, I wrote instead. I wrote what I needed to have happened between Killiand and Emma and it made me happier. I only posted it because kmomof4 and jrob64 told me to do so.
For a week, it had a hit/kudo rate of 100%. I was stunned.
🤍what's one fic of yours you think people didn't "get"?
Perhaps, the rewrite of a scene in Always Practice Safe Hex
I really wanted to show that the best support for someone in a situation where someone is taking their power is to empower them, not to defend or speak for them. That fandom is tiny, so it can just be that no one has any base for it.
💥find your least kudos'd fic - say something wonderful about it.
CS Sleepy Prompts One-Shots
She's just a young collection. I really want people to feel comforted and cosy when they read these. Fluff is often a struggle for me, I really like writing angst and yearning, but these have just flowed out of me and have been so much fun to write. I get to write a wide range of CS stories without the anxiety that I started strong and let readers down at the end (which is my fear with any multi-chapter).
💋when you leave comments on a fic, do you want to hear back from the writer?
I do not expect to. Sometimes, my comments just don't inspire a response. I am just saying "hey, I enjoyed this and these are the parts that I enjoyed."
But, I do appreciate it any time I hear back. I really like hearing about the author's process or thoughts or just general discourse their writing inspired.

Familiar Faces, Connected Stories
4 months later, @sugarglider9603 I finally finished the second half!! :D Ohmygosh I'm so sorry for the wait, but thank you all for being so patient, alot has happened including the absolutely dreaded writers block. All of your comments, likes/kudos, reblogs (on Tumblr) have been helping me finish this chapter, so I really want to thank you guys for enjoying this💙💙💙💙
Another important note, but there is a reason I'm posting this today. That's because today (April 2nd) is my 16th birthday! I actually finished this on Monday (March 30th) but I decided to wait the few days so it would be a bit more special (also yes I know it's late I'm posting this, imma be busy all day so night posting it is!)
Also dont worry, if your new here (go check out the previous stories in the Master Post link!) do note I'm going to be writing my interpretation of the pokebois evolutions :D that and more short side stories are coming asap
Alright I've held you long enough, do enjoy!
Bonus note: this fic (Runaway Eevees) is what Sugar has said cannonly happened of how Remus and Deceit met the group, so if you wanna read that go ahead (it's a good read) :D

Chapter 2
Virgil watched as Thomas set his hands on Roman and Logan's backs, putting a halt on the growling. Well, for now at least.
He inwardly sighed, he knew the others where protective, heck he himself was being protective of his brothers at the moment. But this much hostility to other pokemon he obviously knew? He even saw Patton's tail twitching, as though the father figure wanted to pull Virgil away but was resisting.
He remembered when he first met this group of misfits, that field of flowers where Patton taught him how to make flower crowns. Yes Logan was sitting out, but Roman pounced at any opportunity to play with any wild pokemon, and Patton came right over to join the dark furred Eevee the second he showed himself. Them acting this way around pokemon they never met..
Virgil's eyes widened "you've all met before" he looked at all five Eevee's faces, finding guilt in three and confusion in the other two "when, how? Was it before I met all of you?" He scratched at the ground.
His brother-father figure perked up behind him "you.. never told him?" He questioned the three trained Eevees, who all shuffled their feet. "We didn't want to worry him?" Roman tried, only for his trash brother to growl.
"Well!" Thomas clapped, startling them all "I'm guessing you guys need to talk about something, and since language barriers exist and food still needs to be cooked, I'm going to go burn that. Don't faint each other!" The trainer stood up from his chair making his way to the pile of berries, leaving several Eevees that probably would faint each other before speaking a word.
Virgil huffed, suspicious and annoyed "alright, first things first!" He chirped in a light tone, though it was clear the growl that accompanied it reached all the others ears "would anyone mind telling me how you've all met?"
______________________________
"-and then you woke up with no knowledge of what went down, so we just didn't tell you" Roman finished lamely. All five Eevees had taken their own bits and pieces of the story to tell, mainly because when two started arguing Virgil would hiss them down. Other than that, the dark furred Eevee didn't speak a word and kept his face neutral throughout.
Virgil sighed, flicking his tail "so you never thought once why two random Eevees took me? Logan, I thought you were the smart one. Well" he added and Logan's ears started to lower in shame "you are the smartest one here, just not about this.
"And you two" the youngest turned his head "did it occur to you that you could have just gone up and asked?" He paused, realizing the answer before the marked Eevee spoke.
"Well," he mumbled, "for one we thought they were the ones that took you in the first place. You just disappeared that day" Virgil shuddered, remembering that was true, though the truck story could be told another day "plus they're.. caught pokemon" he finished. "Ya" Virgil continued "just like me."
"But-" the stink covered Eevee tried, but Virgil shook his head.
"Thomas met me several times before I joined the team, in fact from the story Logan and Patton have told me" he flicked his tail to the shiny pair of parents "Thomas wouldn't let himself catch them until both of them made it clear they wanted to join his journey."
Patton nodded "before Thomas saved us, twice if you count the Team Rocket members in the marketplace, we never trusted humans. Most of the time humans tried to steal us for our fur color, Thomas was different" the father figure hesitated, "it.. kind of felt like a puzzle piece clicking into place when we met."
All the Eevees blinked as Thomas hummed in the background. None of the Eevees had ever mentioned to another about a feeling of a puzzle piece, Thomas had once made a comment of it, but the three there to witness that were more focused on Virgil's tail slipping into the bushes. The two unnamed Eevees even remembered when they first met Virgil hidden in the dumpster, they had felt some kind of connection.
"That.. wasn't just me who's been feeling that when we all meet?" Roman voice stumbled, eyes widening even more as the other 5 shook their heads.
"Well, you all seem to be in a better mood" Thomas chuckled, causing them all to jump. "Woah" he calmed, laughing.
"Well, food is all ready and prepared, there's enough for you guys as well" he grinned at the newbies.
The two hesitated at the idea of food, but with a comforting chirp from their brother, they followed.
______________________________
With dinner cleaned away (Thomas somehow managing not to burn anything, Logan praised happily) the group curled before a campfire as the trainer roasted marshmallows (these, he did manage to burn more often than not).
Virgil spent this time explaining to both groups how he knew both sides, of how trash and marked Eevees saved him (he didn't explain what he was escaping from), how he really was taken from them, how he met the group in the field of flowers, and how he finally stayed with Thomas for good. By the end of the story his head was laid on the ground as he cuddled Roman (a late addition during the story time, since when he explained they were boyfriends the trash covered Eevee full on tackled Roman) listening to the fire crackle. Wispy clouds drifted lazily across the sky as the night crawling forest pokemon howled and chirped and hooted.
He looked at his family, most of his past was back in his life; but for how long? He shuddered and curled more into Roman's warm fur, hating the realization he might lose them again after looking for so long. They wouldn't want to be with a trainer, especially even if it meant having Virgil being back in their lives.
Virgil. He nearly spat the name at the ground. He wanted one again for so long, from the day he hatched he had one before it and everything was taken away by.. her. He vowed never to take a name again, especially from a human. If he did, would he be betraying his oldest family connection? What would Sleep and Pecha think of his now, their little Star taking a new name, only for this one to probably drive these brothers away.
Virgil lifted his head up, staring at the two nameless pokemon maybe four tail lengths away. Why did they keep searching for him anyways?
He startled as Roman nudged his cheek. "Sorry" the starter apologized "you just dazed off staring at those two, I was wondering if you were ok."
Virgil sighed "I.. I was just wondering, why did they follow me" he mumbled, unable to look at anyone he opted to stare up at the sky. Unfortunately the world decided to push the clouds out of the clearings sky view, only piling on more of his original family's guilt. He never went searching for that farm ever again after his.. escape, and knowing Thomas they wouldn't go 100 feet anywhere near there with Patton, Logan, and Virgil. Sure, Sleep was reckless, but Pecha would be sensible enough to know not to go out into the world, an unknown area only Eevees who were taken by trainers ever saw. Those puzzle pieces were probably lost to time.
But these two.. he looked back down, Star's eyes trailing at all of his family's faces, stopping at the two. They were here, close enough in one bound he could tackle them. Why did they come, why did they care enough to try and steal him back from (what they knew at the time) hostile people and pokemon? Why did they keep looking, why did he keep looking?
Why.. did he keep looking? Virgil stood up, eyes widening. Because they were, they are family. Family he didn't want to lose, he couldn't lose any more of them. With a push from his hind legs and a squeak of surprise from Roman as he momentarily turned into a launch pad, Virgil crashed into his brothers.
"Shit, wha-" one of them cried, getting cut off as Virgil curled close.
"Please don't leave me again" Virgil chirped quietly, to the point only the two he was curled against him could hear. Virgil burrowed closer "please" he whispered "I can't lose anyone again."
The two looked at each other in surprise. They thought, well Virgil wouldn't want them to stick around. From how he told the story they would never (and probably want never) to take the smallest away from this team, and from the looks of it the three Eevees didn't trust them much right now. They didn't, right?
They usually would never hang around a human more than a few moments, never used to having a family bigger than just the three of them. It seemed logically from their past for it to be near impossible for this human and three of his pokemon to ever trust them.
..But
But it was like the light silver shiny had said earlier, they could feel the puzzle pieces there, already connected to Virgil and ready to connect with them all. A human, who was like none other. He had witnessed them take one of his own, but when that one showed he still trusted the two misfits, the trainer opened his arms, gave them food for no other reason than one he trusted showed they trusted the two strangers.
And the three Eevees, Virgil seemed to trust them to the ends of the Earth. Patton had offered them to join their meal right away. Roman had laughed off the trash Eevees tackle and just said Logan's reaction had been similar. Logan, while seeming to be the least likely one to want them here, listened to their half of the story without interrupting unless to give more detail, and was showing trust even now by watching from the fire's other side, not moving an inch. They trusted them in a way.
No, they didn't think of these four as family yet, but for the first time since they met Virgil, since they met each other, there seemed to be a chance to make that come true.
"Ok", the marked Eevee nudged Virgil "we'll think about it overnight."
For some reason, they realized they wouldn't even need that time.
Because the best part of staying was not only they would gain a whole family, one they would perhaps one day learn they could always trust, but they would regain their brother. Their brother they would have searched for eternity to find, and given anything to stay with.
______________________________
Thomas yawned as he sat up, Patton rolling off the trainer's shoulder still fast asleep and swapped to flopping over a passed out Logan, who was moments ago tucked between Thomas's ear and shoulder. The human glanced around, finding Roman (who always moved in his sleep) laying across the sleeping bag where his left ankle was. Last but not least Virgil was curled under a cuddle puddle with the two new Eevees from last night off next to his sleeping bag, the only contact being Virgil's tail brushing Roman's.
The trainer chuckled and slid his foot away from it's prison, quietly hissing as he tested the tingling foot. Of course it was asleep. Well, the best way to wake it up was to get active so..

The dirty Eevee stretched, rolling off from the top of the cuddle puddle. He let out a small oof when he came in contact with the floor a moment later than he expected. The strange, definitely not earth floor….
Eevee blinked, watching not one but two of his brothers curl together sleeping. Yesterday wasn't a dream he realized happily, watching the three other Eevees scattered throughout the tent sleep. A pleasant smell carried his paws out of the durable plastic flap, emerging to a bright, just after dawn day. The human (Thomas his always chaotic mind somehow supplied) was back making more hot food. Well, at least he seemed to be attempting with varying success, a stack of nice enoughly done pancakes sat on a plate to his left, with a smaller (but not by much) pile of black crispy pancakes to his right. Now the left crispy brown ones looked appealing, the Eevee thought the crispy, burnt pancakes smelled like a gift from Arceus himself.

Thomas stumbled in surprise when the stack of miserable pancakes clattered to the ground, only to laugh as he watched the dirtier of the Eevee pair dive at them hungrily.
"Well breakfast won't be ready for a bit more, but I wouldn't mind the early clean up crew" he giggled as the Eevee glanced up only for a moment, only to turn to back and attack the pancakes again.
"Just make sure not to scatter them too far" Thomas warned kindly, turning back to the camping stove " we'll have to clean up afterwards." The trainer smiled as the Eevee chirped in agreement.

Soon the others crawled out, and the burnt pancake (and other foods Thomas just didn't get right) devourer went to chirp and chat with the others. Food was served, equipment packed, and about two hours later Thomas was adjusting everything onto his back. If it hasn't been for Logan, Thomas knew he would never have had his stuff packed so neatly.
"Welp" Thomas said out loud "it's time to get going, we have a gym challenge next town" his four cheered different levels of excitement. He turned to the two wild runners "I guess this is goodbye for now" he smiled
After so many run-ins with Virgil, Thomas had skillfully learned how to hide his heart ripping out everytime he had to leave puzzle pieces behind.
This skill came into play hard when Virgil looked up at the trainer with such sorrow, Thomas nearly burst to tears right then and there. Instead he smiled, offering a hand for comforting pets. Virgil did not walk near the hand, instead letting out and angry hiss.
Thomas shook his head, wishing he could fully understand what Virgil was saying, but got the message "I can't force them, you know better than anyone here that I only bring members on my team if they want to join. Never by force, I always give an option."
Virgil wine was cut off though as the dirty Eevee snapped from his frozen trance and bounded forwards, stepping up to Thomas and putting his paw onto the human's hand. Somewhere in him remembered a similar interaction with Roman when they first met, but that was washed away when the other Eevee came up and chirped something, only to get tackled by Virgil right after.
"Oh" Thomas realized, smiling "I'm guessing that's a good thing?" He asked his team beside him. Patton nodded excitedly, Roman purred, and Logan merely flicked his tail positively.
"I guess I can do this then" he slid out two pokeballs, setting them on the ground. The wild pair looked at eachother one last time before the smaller marked one nodded, and both touched the white button.

"So" Thomas asked as the group wandered down the trail, focusing on the pair walking (or in the dirtier ones case bouncing) by his feet "I was wondering if I could offer giving you names? You don't have to, but-" Virgil rubbed the trainer's cheek from his spot in the hood, stopping the human's splutter of words before chirping some of his own down. The two below responded after a moment and Virgil gave off a purr as a signal: both had agreed it would be ok.
"Alright.." he mumbled. Earlier events of when the dirt covered Eevee had offered his paw in the same way Roman had came rushing back, turning and twisting until a name suddenly formed "how about Remus for you?" He wondered. Said Eevee stumbled as though surprised, but after a moment Remus gave a happy chirp, Thomas smiled in return.
Finally there was the Eevee with the special marks on his face. There was something in his mind that he felt for some reason, it just felt right for him to call the other
"Janus" he mumbled by accident out loud, the trainer's eyes widened as he glanced curiously at the pokemon "what about Janus?" The Eevee seemed to think hard although weighing the name vs. something only he saw, he knew. Before Thomas could speak the little Eevee glaced up and nodded, the most determined nod he had gotten out of the six of them for figuring out their name.
Six of them.
Thomas grinned widely as all six of his Eevees walked or rode on him. It had all started with Roman, the first time Thomas had found a puzzle piece. Then Patton and Logan, Virgil, and finally Remus and Janus. It felt right, like he was home. Like he was with family.
"It's interesting," he voiced quietly to his team "how many of us have seen each other before really meeting each other. There's even more to explore in the future, so many possibilities, so many mysteries. But I'm glad" he sighed gleefully as the distant sound of cars passed. The town was close by.
"I'm glad I get to do it with so many familiar faces. I'm glad that we all have connected stories. I.. honestly couldn't imagine walking our next journey without you guys, my completed puzzle
My family."

Chapter 20
Emerald’s P.O.V
Slowly I awoke, groaning softly at the dull throb of pain across my body. Yet there was the softness of sheets beneath me. It took my brain a moment to remember what had happened. Looking around, I tried to make sense of my surroundings. The room was bright but not hospital levels of bright. There was a steady beeping noise from somewhere beside me. I could feel medical tubing across my arm, likely feeding my various fluids to keep me alive. I was probably lucky to be alive after what Ecco did.
This place really didn’t strike me as somewhere that Ed would stay. Eddie didn’t care for luxury or how a place looked, so long as it was a roof over his head and secure. So, where was I? He wouldn’t be stupid enough to take me to a hospital where we’d both be arrested and thrown in Arkham. And Eddie had plenty of medical knowledge to save me like he had. Slowly my vision came more into focus and I could make out my surroundings better. There was a fireplace built into one wall, the fire controlled and small but enough for me to feel the warmth of the room.
The wooden floor was adorned with various rugs and the bed I was on was a double, with a wooden headboard. A blanket was over my naked form for warmth and my modesty. Slowly, I sat myself up against the headboard. The door to the room opened and in walked in Eddie. He noticed that I was awake and smiled, quickly coming over. “I’m so glad your awake,” he spoke. So many questions were running through my head. Where was I? How long had I been out? Where was Jeremiah? Had he tried coming looking for me? Was Ecco okay? Taking my hand in his, Eddie leaned over and kisses my cheek.
“I know you have a lot of questions, but the main thing is your safe and alive. I’ll explain everything soon. But for now, you need a bath,” Eddie explained. Whilst a bath sounded good, I didn’t like the idea of Eddie seeing me naked. My body was littered with scars made by Jeremiah, and now Ecco had left her own set of scars too. I didn’t even like looking at my body anymore, if Eddie saw it, he probably wouldn’t find me as attractive anymore. Hopefully, my body had recovered enough that I could bathe myself. Eddie removed the one remaining needle from my arm that had been drip feeding me fluids.
“Can I have a robe?” I asked. “Of course. I’ll be right back.” Eddie left, and I breathed a sigh a relief, wrapping the surrounding bedsheet tighter to hide my tainted skin. He returned a few minutes later with a black and gold robe. He handed it to me and opened another door that led to a bathroom. Eddie filled the bathtub with water and I quickly wrapped myself in the robe that was many sizes too big for me. Swinging my legs over to the side of the bed, I then forced myself up. Thankfully, my legs held me up, and I made my way to the bathroom.
Leaning against the doorframe, I watched as Eddie was testing the water temperature, his shirt sleeve rolled up halfway. Lavender scented bubble bath was added to the water. Eddie turned the water off and Eddie turned back to me. “Do you want to me to help?” He asked. “I’ve got it. Thanks.” He smiled and nodded understandingly, leaving the bathroom without another word. If my body wasn’t a mess of scared flesh, I would have let him stay, I would have gladly accepted his help.
Removing the robe, I assessed the damage in the mirror. The first noticeable injury was the red scar across my shoulder. Gently I ran my fingers over the neat stitching, noticing the next wound across my lower arm. More stitches held it together, although it seemed to be healing well. I found another three wounds, one across my stomach, the second on my thigh and then finally my palm. My palm still had a dull throb of pain across it and had a lot of stitches, meaning that wound had been deep. I turned, checking my back, which had a series of stab marks. Swallowing thickly and fighting back tears, I turned away from my reflection and climbed into the warmth of the bath.
Hugging my knees to my chest, tears rolled down my cheeks. I wasn’t sure if they were tears of happiness or sadness. I knew I had finally done the right thing and left Jeremiah for good…but there was still a weight on my shoulders. There was no relief yet, like I had expected. I doubt I would feel that until I knew Jeremiah was dead so he could no longer come after me. Because this was the only beginning. Now that I was considered his enemy he’d probably work twice as hard to kill me or ruin my life. Or both. Once I was strong enough, I’d leave, find my own place and lie low for a long time. It would be difficult, but I had to keep those I cared about safe.
Anybody that helped me through this next stage would have a giant target on their back. The best thing I could do for everyone is just disappear for a while. Carefully, I washed my body and hair before draining the tub. Once I had dried myself, I wrapped myself in the robe again and exited the bathroom. On the bed were fresh clothes for me to change into. The bed had also been made and most of the medical equipment had been removed too. Changing into the jeans, lose t-shit and jumper, I ventured out of the room to find Eddie and whoever had been kind enough to let us stay.
Navigating the hall, I heard voices up ahead. Eddies voice and another familiar one. The smell of cooking drifted down the hall. “Whilst I tire of her stubbornness, she will be distant for a while. You can’t just expect her to forgive you for cheating because you saved her life. You waltzed in after we had been worried and declared your newfound love without regard for her feelings,” Oswald argued. Stood in the kitchen were Oswald and Eddie. Eddie stood over the stove stirring something in a saucepan, whilst Oswald was snacking on a particularly large slice of pie. I should have known it was Oswald who had let us stay. Who else would Ed go to with such a problem?
Eddie seemed irritated by Oswald’s words, even though Oswald was right. But Eddie and I had moved past that. It was nice that Oswald had taken my side on it, though. “Your starting to sound like you’re the one still not over it, Oswald,” I smirked. Both of them turned their attention to me, looking pleased to see me. It felt like we were back at the Van Dhal manor, back when things had been good between the three of us. I leant against the kitchen counter, smiling at Oswald. “But it’s nice to know you’ve had my back about it all these years,” I continued.
“It’s nice to see you’ve finally come to your senses on that lunatic,” Oswald replied. Forcing a smile, I thought about my first question to ask whilst Eddie dished up dinner. We moved to the dining room, the smell of chicken soup making my stomach growl. Quickly finding a seat, I ate. I was the first to finish the first course, my stomach barely satisfied. “How long was I out?” I asked. “Two days,” Eddie answered. “And you patched me up?” “Yes. Luckily your blood and Oswald’s blood was a match.”
So now I owed him my life. He’d let me stay and given me his blood. Maybe Oswald was a better friend than I had previously given him credit for. “Thank you, Oswald,” I said sincerely. Oswald waved me off, “you don’t need to thank me for that.” “I do. I haven’t exactly treated either of you the best in recent years. And…I’m sorry.” Oswald placed a comforting hand on my shoulder whilst Eddie took my hand in his, squeezing it gently. “He manipulated you against us. We understand. Besides, we didn’t exactly make things easy back then,” Oswald added slight humour to his voice at the last part.
Leaving the table, Eddie tended to the second course. He came back a few minutes later, balancing three plates. Goulash. And likely Oswald’s mother’s recipe. Halfway through the second course, I asked the much harder questions. “Has Jeremiah come looking for me?” I queried. “No. Your safe here, Emerald,” Eddie reassured me. I nodded. He would come looking for me soon enough. “And what about Ecco? Is she…alive?” I asked.
Oswald and Eddie exchanged a glance at each other, and I prepared myself for the worst. I’d killed her. “We dont know. Neither of them have been seen since that night,” Eddie answered. “Why would you even care? She tried to kill you?” Oswald frowned. Eddie glared at Oswald as if he was being insensitive, which he was. I put my knife and fork down, sitting back in my chair. “Why did you care after Ed shot you and left your body at the docks?” I spat, “Ecco’s been manipulated by him for years, now that I’m not there as his punching bag he’ll likely hurt her more now.”
Eddie took my hand in his again, making me focus my attention on him, “that is not your fault. That does not make you selfish. You cannot continue to think of and protect everyone else. Now, you need to focus on you and healing.” Nodding, I did my best to fight back tears. I knew he was right; it was just hard to put that way of thinking into practice. At least now I would protect the right people. Eventually we finished dinner, and I helped with the washing up. Eddie and I were left in the kitchen alone, silence falling between us. He dried his hands after emptying the sink and turned to me.
“You know I’m here for you right? That you don’t have to go through this alone. I know this will be a difficult adjustment period, but I want to help. Oswald and Barbara want to help too,” he explained. Forcing a smile again, I nodded. He wanted the best for me. And I wanted the best for him. And right now, I was not the best thing for him. Yawning, I said goodnight and headed back to my room. Searching the room, I found more clothes that I could take with me. I also found a few empty duffel bags. Oswald likely used this room as storage when he didn’t have guests. Quickly, I filled two bags with clothes and waited for the right time.
There would be armed guards on the door, but they wouldn’t stop me from leaving. Yes, they would inform Oswald and Eddie by morning, but I’d be long gone by then. And they would be safe for when Jeremiah finally came looking for me.

Just a quick request for some advice, I've noticed you seem to be very good at promoting your works, requesting feedback and actually getting some, and reposting on Tumblr and such. Now admittedly, you are an awesome author and I pretty much love everything you write, but I have to think your promotion abilities are part of what brings you hits, kudos, likes, and feedback. Do you have any advice on the best ways to promote my fanfiction, build a fanbase and short of begging, get more comments?
Self-promotion and marketing definitely are a large part of my fanbase. I’ve seen it go both ways; amazing writers and fics that don’t have much attention and not-so-great ones that have huge followings because of social media presence of the author. So while having quality stories is still a large part of it, so too is marketing.
My background is not actually in marketing but journalism, but I did run a number of social media pages and have always been a very big people-person and engager, which I’ve applied to pretty much all aspects of my life. One of my favorite slogans I’ve learned from retail (and marketing) is you can’t sell what’s not out. i.e., if you don’t present your product you can’t expect to have any customers (or in this case readers).
In my case, I’m a very prolific author, meaning I have a lot of stories under my name and I’ve been fortunate that a couple of those have become bigger name ones in this fandom for extra exposure. The more you have, obviously the more you will “sell” and therefore, generally, the more exposure you’ll get and then comments (comments though are a fickle beast and it really really varies).
I’m borrowing some of the advice from a previous post (you can always search my blog with “#writing advice” for more things) but these would be a couple of strategies I would recommend you try out :) Not all of them may be applicable to you either, as all authors write at different paces and volumes and have different time constraints, but maybe something in here will help ;)
1. Have an update schedule! This one is really important. Whether that means you pre-write the entire fic or you buckle down and commit to a regular posting (which is how Color was for me for the first couple months until I pre-wrote enough to kick back and relax a bit xD) be it weekly or bi weekly or every two weeks (the other bi weekly? Such a weird word) you do that.
When you get people on a schedule and they are more likely to come back and comment with something other than the dreaded “update soon!” because they know you are going to update soon and when exactly that is. Give readers something to plan and look forward to, just like a favorite TV show that airs weekly.
2. Respond to comments. Whether you write giant-ass paragraph responses or even a simple “thank you ♥” it goes a long way. I know I always am more inclined to really keep up on a fic where the author has shown to appreciate their readers (although if I read your fic and like it I will comment regardless ♥). I know for me right now I have stopped doing this as it just got... draining for me, to respond in detail and never see those readers again and it felt hurtful to me. But I still make a point to say thank you in the author’s notes and if anyone has a question I do try to answer that too.
3. Read other authors’ works you enjoy but do not self-promote. Please don’t do that. I hate it when I see that and it makes me even less inclined to check out a fic (I’m already very picky with what I read and don’t read much at all). By all means comment on the fic and be like “I headcanon Keith is a good cook too!” because those personal details are lovely and maybe that’ll inspire that other author to click on your profile to see if you’ve got a fic with such a theme to go read.
But otherwise, keep your comments about their fic (or your reaction to it) and show your excitement and passion for that fic. Bookmark too (and Ao3 lets you add comments; you can bet if I see a nice comment on a bookmark tag I’m clicking on that author to see a; what else they’ve bookmarked and b; if they’ve written anything). Well written and passionate comments tell a lot about a person and if they can write a nice review they likely can write a nice fic and could be worth an extra click to see their profile. That is indeed how I’ve found several authors and fics I now read :)
4. Chapter length. This I have noticed over time but shorter chapters (for me around 3k-4k) tend to get more comments than longer ones because people have “more time” upon finishing to leave a comment. It doesn’t always work but it is something I’ve witnessed on more than one occasion. That said, don’t write a chapter of only 1k words and think they’ll pour in because it’s short. Leading on to…
5. Whatever your chapter is, make sure it has content that people will want to respond to. Not every chapter has to have explosions and action and intense heart-to-hearts, but every chapter should have something memorable. Filler chapters are unavoidable, especially in longer fics, but do what you can to make them not quite so “blah” and give them some heart.
6. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, meaning write multiple things (although perhaps not as much as me ^^;). Having a mix of a longer running chapter fic (for those “episodes” back in bullet point one) to keep people coming back and having a few shorter fics (be one-shots, two-shots, or shorter chaptered fics) to draw in new people and help you out when you get stuck on your other fic is invaluable. I definitely expanded my audience and brought in new readers that gave me little boosts of support when I started publishing one-shots semi-regularly.
7. Don’t be afraid to self-promote on your blog. Reblog your works, pull out snippets to share, reblog those too if you don’t get many notes. I don’t really get how Tumblr’s tag system works, but tag your first few tags with the biggest ones that those browsing might stumble across. Ao3 does let you link to your Tumblr so long as you aren’t advertising commissions or patreon or the like in said blurb so make sure you link to your tumblr too to get cross-traffic.
8. Post sneak content on your blog; previews and snippets. Get people excited about the work before you post it.
9. I don’t know how reasonable this is for most, but holding little games or contests can really up the engagement. Starting out, doing something like a bingo card prompt event could be one to consider; the “prize” is writing the prompt which gets you both more content, therefore more eyeballs on said content, and hopefully a very grateful fan who will leave you a nice comment and reblog it for their page.
10. I like ending on this number. Um, oh, okay! This is both great for writing experience, content and engagement! If you see a piece of fanart you like that you feel compelled to write a bit for, do so and reblog it! Anyone who clicks on that art will see your reblog of it and maybe, maybe, the original artist will reblog your selection too! Not just artists either, but there are lots of “prompt” type posts I see that you could do that for as well.

Self-Insert
My submission for the wolfstar introvert prompt: Internet Crush
Huge thanks to @nachodiablo and @mirgaxus for the beta and the support!
Summary: Remus and Sirius both write self-insert fics in the same fandom. One day Sirius asks to borrow Remus's OC for his new fic. What could he possibly be planning, and what is the mystery pairing he promised to introduce?
Read it here or on AO3
Padfoot was a very popular writer in the Double Trouble fandom. His OC, Orion, had long, sleek black hair, piercing grey eyes, and cheekbones that could cut glass. Orion liked to wear crop tops, leather jackets and combat boots, as well as numerous sassy pride pins. In some stories he just hung out with the prankster YouTuber twins, but usually he dated Fabian, the member of the duo who was rumored to be gay. The stories were filled with cheeky innuendo, and the occasional euphemistic sex scene. Truth be told, Remus had a bit of a crush on Orion - how could he not? He knew most of the readers did, because they said so, in all caps, in the comments section.
Remus also wrote fics in the Double Trouble fandom, under the nickname Moony, but he wasn't nearly as popular. His OC, Romulus, also usually dated Fabian, although in one fic it was Fabian's brother Gideon who was secretly gay and fell for the shy OC. Remus didn't describe Romulus's appearance much, only stating he had light brown hair and looked very average, but his best friend, Daisy, who appeared in all the stories, assured him he was totally cute. He did always mention Romulus's shyness, bookishness, and inexperience.
Romulus was just naturally uninterested in fooling around, focusing on finding The One. In some stories he'd never even kissed anyone. Remus felt like the story was cleaner that way, even though he himself had actually dated Lily, whom Daisy was based on, for two whole weeks.
Once, feeling brave, he decided to actually put his “relationship” with Lily in the story. It served as a way for Romulus to find out he didn’t like girls, because he was supposed to be attracted to her, but wasn't. Remus himself wasn’t actually sure he didn’t like girls, but he figured a totally gay character would be more relatable, as well as more attractive to a confident older guy like Fabian. He let Romulus feel confused for a while, just to make it interesting, before Fabian swept him off his feet and showed him how gay he actually was.
It was this story that got him his first comment from the one and only Padfoot.
Great story, man. I loved the confusion over Daisy and Fabian. Did you consider that Romulus might be bi or pan though? Not saying he has to be, just that while we all know Fab is hot enough turn any guy, even he can't put a guy off girls entirely if he's into them.
His heart beating fast, Remus wrote a reply:
Haha, yeah. He could be bi. I mean Daisy's not the only girl in the world. But right now he obviously has a strong preference for men, and one especially. ;)
Thanks for commenting!
Over the next few months, Padfoot commented on all of Remus's fics, and on every new chapter of his WiP. He even followed Remus back on Tumblr, after months of Remus following him. Occasionally he messaged Remus, although the conversation usually fizzled quickly since Remus had no idea what to say. Remus consoled himself with Padfoot's frequent likes on his posts, which never failed to put a goofy grin on Remus’s face.
And then the fandom exploded. It came out that Fabian was dating Caradoc Dearborn, a popular and rather attractive game reviewer. Some fans were excited about the new ship, but others mourned, especially those whose OCs were paired with Fabian. Padfoot, however, announced on his blog that he was writing a new story, which was Fabidoc, and also contained a new pairing. Remus clicked like. Orion and Gideon would be hot together. A minute later, he was surprised to see a message from Padfoot.
padfoot hey moony
moony Hi?
padfoot what's up? listen i wanted to ask you smtg
moony Sure
padfoot can i borrow romulus for a story i'm working on?
moony Er, sure. What for?
padfoot you'll see
Unlike most of Padfoot's stories, the new story turned out to be a slow burn. It was an AU set in a college, and the first few chapters were mostly Fabian and Orion being flirty gossipy gay best friends, and Gideon being straight and exasperated. Caradoc showed up in chapter two, but only hung out with Gideon, barely giving Fabian a glance. There were some crazy plans cooked up by Orion and Fabian (with occasional input from Gideon, who just couldn't help himself) to get Caradoc's attention on Fabian, all failing spectacularly, but there was no love interest for Orion himself.
Remus was stalking Padfoot's face tag (he looked just like he described Orion, although Remus wondered if the eyes were photoshopped), when he received an email notification from AO3. "Padfoot just posted chapter 5 of The Moon to My Stars," it said. Excited, he clicked the link.
And there he was. Romulus was the cute hipster working in the library, described at length from his soft brown curls to his scuffed trainers. Orion only had time to ask his name before he had to dash, throwing one last wink at him, narrowly escaping a furious Gideon, whom he had locked in a bathroom stall so that Fabian could go meet Caradoc in his stead.
Remus thought false imprisonment, of a friend no less, was rather excessive just to get your friend a date. He was about to click the back button, disappointed, but his eye was drawn to the next paragraph, where Fabian was relating how Caradoc had recognized him immediately and saved him from trying to pretend to be Gid. Apparently Fabian was having second thoughts about the plan, because what do you know, some people don't want to start a relationship based on lies. He was extremely pleased that Caradoc  had recognized him, though, considering he and Gideon were identical twins and most people couldn't tell them apart. Remus thought it was very romantic, even though he himself had memorized the freckle patterns of both twins and could tell them apart easily.
The story rolled faster from there. In chapter six, Fabian refused to listen to any more plans. His new plan, to Orion's chagrin, was to stop playing around and be direct. It seemed to work for him, as he managed to make plans alone with Caradoc (which he insisted were not a date, because nobody said so directly, but obviously were). Orion, dragged away by Gid when he tried to spy on them, and then ditched in favor of football practice, wandered into the library, bored. Of course, there he met Romulus again. Remus thought the description of Romulus's laugh was a bit gratuitous, as was Orion's random stretching, like he didn't wear crop tops half the time anyway.
The chapter ended there, leaving Remus a little confused. Was Orion flirting with Romulus? Just then, he heard a pop sound. He had a message from Padfoot on Tumblr.
padfoot have you read my new chapter?
moony Yeah, just finished it, very cute Are we going to see Fab and Doc's date though?

And they lived happily ever after, and got a shout out in the next Double Trouble video because Padfoot's fans ratted them out. The End.
