one thing i’m really sick of is ageism in fandom.

i’ve seen so many people bashing byler by saying it’s all 30-40 year olds obsessed with an underage ship, implying that it’s creepy/pedo behavior to engage in fandom or shipping when you’re older. 

and i see equally as many people responding with the vibes of “no actually we’re teens and twenties :) so it’s okay :)”

maybe it’s because i’m autistic? but i’ve been very involved with fandom my whole life and i don’t expect that to change as i grow older. im only 23 and i genuinely feel like there’s a clock running out to where me being nerdy and obsessive will no longer be okay because i’m Too Old. and that makes me so sad. 

adults are allowed to enjoy things. adults are allowed to ship characters. adults are allowed to age without giving up things they enjoy. adults are allowed to relate to characters that are younger than them because guess what!!! they were once young!

obviously there’s nuance to this - if adults are interacting with minors or making them uncomfortable, if adults are making explicit content about underage characters, i understand that discomfort - but for the most part that’s not the case i’ve seen with byler.

not only are adults the people behind the scenes of your favorite media (the duffers are 38 and no one calls them creepy for writing about kids), but they’re also often behind some of the best fandom content, writing the coolest theories and the best fanfiction and making amazing art. not to say that younger folks don’t contribute amazing stuff, just saying, we could give a little more respect to fandom elders.

She's honestly kind of a canonical victim of yaoi almost. She and her husband Tom have a loveless marriage but never end up getting divorced. Tom has a weird psychosexual obsession with Shiv's cousin Greg and at one point literally compares them all to the time Emperor Nero pushed his wife down the stairs and then castrated and married a slave boy named Sporus (Tom is unwell). Anyway the show just ended and long story short Tom is now CEO of Shiv's family's evil company and she is reduced to being his pregnant wife (which is the result of her voting not to authorize either of her brothers as CEO in order to save them from themselves) and Tom made another weird comment about literally owning Greg. And now people who ship Tom and Greg are like "omg it's canon we won" but I don't. Think that they did. Sorry I'm rambling it was just a really good finale idek if this counts but

I will be honest I'm not really tuned into the tomgreg fandom, but tons of people wanted tom to leave shiv and get with greg and tons of people thought shiv was the devil incarnate and refused to see any nuance in her character and I don't think those two things are a coincidence. 

She gets a lot of hate from fans, largely just for being a woman who reacts in a non pretty way to abuse and for doing the exact same shitty stuff her brothers do. But also a large part of the hate she gets comes from the people who ship her husband with her cousin. To the point where people claim she's abusing her husband who views her as an accessory, a baby factory, and a ticket to money. Don't get me wrong, their relationship is incredibly toxic and unhealthy, but it is so on both of their parts. But Shiv's the only one who gets criticized for it

Han Sooyoung

han sooyoung is one of the main trio protagonists yet people constantly ignore her in order to ship the other two males despite the fact that they are all doomed by the narrative TOGETHER!!! fanon content is even worse because it either slaps a lesbian sticker onto her to shittily write her off in fanfic OR they make her so one dimensional its like a cardboard stand in. han sooyoung arguably has a more important/interesting dynamic with the main male protagonist yet everyone ignores her because they want their uwu gay babies IM SO SICK OF ORV FANS

Dokja and Joonghyuk are a very popular ship (rightfully so, i get it) but usually Sooyoung is seen as in the way of their relationship or not as valued as the other two even though her place in the story and relationship with the other characters is just as strong. Recently there was a post on twitter being rude about people who ship her and Joonghyuk (which is a super valid ship) and i saw a lot of hate that i believe just stems from her getting “in the way” of a yaoi ship.

its so annoying when i find out people that seem fun or artists in my fandom (cough.. yall know what fandom) are proshitters (this is the 3rd time now. i just blocked them). i still see antis interacting with their posts. i wanna vibe with people but not with people who think shipping incest ships or minors with adults are okay. and not people who think romanticizing dark topics is okay.

also nobody better not say ''awww the proshits are just anti-harassment 🥺'' like no that definition completely distracts everyone from the nuance of the beliefs associated with the labels, arguments and discourse in the first place and im sick of it. so tired of that definition being spread around because it's just generalizing antis (or people who don't label themselves as antis, but have views that veryyy much lean to that side-- like me :D) so nobody don't even bother to hear about their views and why they believe them.

its real funny that i constantly see proshits who explicitly say or hint that they're okay with people shipping incest, and romanticizing dark topics. and they explicitly say they don't think fiction can influence or affect reality (some of them do think that but they just pick and choose what can or can't affect reality. like an example, ive witnessed a lot of proshits speak about poc representation and how fiction affects poc minorites, yet they'll still believe raceplay fics are fucking okay despite it contributing to poc's discriminition)

is anyone gonna talk about how most of the dead characters will consist of nonwhite characters on the show (yj) now or what? the treatment of minorities kinda suck right now. travis died in the adult timeline. adam (the mexican coded character) was killed by shauna. javi died in the wilderness. kristen 'accidentally' died by falling off of a cliff. misty killed that reporter in the first season. and all these talks abt mari dying and possibly akilah dying and im like...? if you gonna do that you'd at least have to really really write well for lottie and tai's characters when your main cast consist of predominantly white characters alongside a handful of 'dead' nonwhite characters.

the writers wrote themselves into a corner honestly but as ever it was and still is an opportunity for them to like truly build up the horror by connecting with who the characters represent whether they want to accept it or not because im like very convinced they understand who taissa and lottie could represent but they prefer not to touch it out of fear of coming off racist probably but the fact that they remaines neutral about acknowledging their race as more than a wink like with the scenes of taissa becoming a senator and she was the only main character of color, it's fucking insane that we're dealing with tokenism in 2023 because the writers aren't brave enough to simply ask input in their white story like tawny cypress who fucking loves horror and her craft is there, simone kessell too like these are not amateurs if they don't want to ask for writers of color in their writing room and meanwhile we have jasmine savoy brown asking for scenes with akilah and taissa because that shit isnt even being thought of, its fucking weird it's what it is, but leaving that behind the fact that fandom can be so vindictive without acknowledging that the story does request like actual critical fucking thinking of its pieces however superficial the text could be at times like that is something fucking requested of the damn text considering just what people clearly come for which is shauna and jackie like suddenly all nuance is there for them, gone the minute people ask to pay attentio attention to the imbalance of the depth and exploration of the perspectives of the characters of color in a survival setting as if it could ever be paired up so easily with whiteness even as kids, way before the teenage years, that shifts, and like fuck, the fact that we have been prevented from seeing tai's family? lottie's? even the other dead yellowjackets families???? what does that say of thr focus of the story and the failures of the writers to present a balanced story like the scale is rigged, it always is but even so obviously presented here as you are, all we get from white fans is apathy, like that doesn't mirror the cruelty that is being commented on one way or another....... sick shit no lies......

and it is been a few of my mutuals and some posts in the tags which have acknowledged it as such and for all that fandom claims that is a space to speculate and expand on the text, once again, true colors are shown and instead of trying to build on the characters of color, they continously pull them down, like mary, like kristen, like travis not even in the way the story did as a tool for her suffering, he's erased for convenience like fuck.... the story shows how much it took to dehumanize each other to that point and i know it's fiction like i don't fucking teach it for a living but in a story that asks you to see the humanity in their cruelty and reason and childhood, people in the tags and fandom spaces of this show find it easy to dehumanize who they deem less worthy for free like... girl look at the fucking text ffs....

I’m just gonna say it, but I think current kids younger than 15 are almost incapable of dissecting anything with critical nuance. Because there is a HUGE difference to the 15 year olds BEFORE lockdown, and after. I’ve seen Gen Z teenagers on tiktok and tumblr have the most empathic, kind, amazingly supportive and intelligent opinions in 2020 who have now grown up and are in college absolutely killing it - they’ve gone into lockdown already having developed their emotional skills and come out of it with a lot more depth and growth. But YOU guys were 12 and younger when the pandemic started, you spent YEARS of it online without interacting with a wide variety of people and learning to read between the lines as you HAVE to in order to navigate the real world and peoples speech patterns and behaviours. You grew up alone in your house behind your screen, without being able to bond with classmates or friends, and most importantly, without anyone to temper your thoughts, or have rational and calm discussions in person. Half the teens I see on tiktok and tumblr NOW are so full of hate, so quick to put down and dismiss peoples choices, so quick to troll and voice really bizarrely conservative and ignorant opinions as if they’re entitled to do so, and so anti-empowerment and anti-ENJOYMENT in general. And I’m gonna be real with you and say it’s because of lockdown. It’s not entirely your fault bc y’all are still kids.

Your literature programs would have been cut, you’re just reading for the assignment, you’re not engaging in seminars and debates and classroom exercises the way you would in class, and all the while you’re just being increasingly exposed to sensationalist media that boils down complex and nuanced topics to a black and white, yes or no, 7 second hook. And it’s made you incapable of approaching anything with logic and empathy, because you just didn’t HAVE that the way everyone else did during their formative middle school puberty years. So now the moment you have a singular negative opinion of something, it’s all encompassing. There is no give, no flex, everyone is guilty until innocent. And why wouldn’t you think that? That’s what people have been doing online during the whole pandemic, cancelling people for 1 comment taken out of context, or being so quick to say something negative first instead of positive. You got comfortable behind your screen instead of being taught the consequences of saying shit things, and now when it comes to exploring all angles to a situation like you should be taught how to the way EVERYONE is, you take it at the most basic, surface, face value.

And when it now comes to fandom spaces where you have older fans in the same space as younger fans, there’s so many more instances where something will get an inordinate and undeserved amount of hate or hype based on a very surface level of understanding. Inherently, this isn’t a good or bad thing, it’s just a thing. What IS bad is when people come under someone’s obviously thought out and nuanced opinion to be like “you’re wrong for liking this bc (insert a completely unrelated logical fallacy of a reason)”. “If you like this book that happens to be a straight romance, you’re homophobic” IT DOESNT WORK THAT WAY AND IM SICK AND TIRED OF ARGUING WITH PEOPLE WHO NEVER BOTHERED TO DEVELOP READING COMPREHENSION SKILLS EVEN AFTER FINDING OUT THEY DON’T HAVE ANY.

Please for the love of GOD I am begging you guys to learn how to analyze literature. Like in an enforced curriculum at a high school level way. Please. YOU will be better off for it, and in turn the rest of us. This isn’t the new wave of boomer-esque hate against the kids. Gen Z is the goddamn future!!! This is a very specific, very VALID gripe, about a very small subset of kids who spent their formative years chronically online. And please! I am BEGGING teachers to recognize this and help their kids out to fix this. I know you might disagree and most tae fans might even label me an anti for “not being proud” or something (happens on twitter for some reason.

But I can’t be the only person who genuinely doesn’t feel good seeing tae in military uniform?

Like people are already going on about how great he looks and how hard he’s been working etc, and it’s all true, but we’ve all heard what happens in the military, and how difficult it is, and I just feel like everyone tends to ignore that in order to marvel on how idols look or how hard they’ve been working etc….but it’s like…the military is not a picnic??

Like promotional videos? It’s propaganda and there’s no way to tell whether any idol wants to do them or doesn’t want to, and I’m already seeing ppl go “omg SDT is milking Kim Taehyung because hardly any celebs join the unit haha 😁”

And it’s like…that’s not something to laugh about? “Oh his impact will be insane” dude….this is FORCED enlistment we’re talking about. I’m from a country with mandatory enlistment. It’s genuinely a very difficult think that changes all our men and a lot of times in negative ways.

Also there’s nothing good about being used for a country’s propaganda, especially when you probably can’t say no (and this goes for any country).

Idk how to word this but this weird romanticization of the military as a result of seeing them, but especially tae, look good or healthy or strong, etc… just feels wrong.

And at risk of sounding like one of those weirdos who treats him like a 5 year old, I wanna make it clear that I’m fully aware he is more than capable, and that he’s a grown man who chose to challenge himself and I have nothing but respect for that, and I completely disagree with babying him or his choices, my issue isn’t with him or his choices but with the government and the way IT uses it’s soldiers, but especially celebs.

Like I feel like this is a conversation that’s had every time but everyone just completely loses it once pictures drop (not even from tae himself) of tae or others.

And I know a lot of fans don’t do it with ill intentions but it can still be weird, y’know??

I don’t know if I’m making sense, but my entire timeline is freaking out over the pics, and I just wish we as a fandom bothered to just leave them be, especially in the military (which is already not an easy thing) instead of spreading the things further and helping out with the propaganda.

I wanna start by saying that we all are different people so we are all proud of him for different reasons or just mean “being proud of him” in a different way, me personally I’m proud of him for having goals and for achieving them, for trying to focus on the few good aspects of that awful experience and turn it into something positive for HIMSELF. I don’t think you’re an anti, and I don’t completely disagree with you either. I feel weird seeing him with a gun in his hands too, I feel weird knowing what will be the sick reactions and projections of the fandom. I also know that his unit has made those promotional videos since forever and they’re not doing it rn because KTH joined them.

I know (like you do) that saying no in those contexts is nearly impossible, NJ did it with that whole speech too, idols that perform at those military events did it too… it’s a nuanced discourse. It’s not just black or white. I’m proud of him or I’m not proud of him.

I just wish fans could stop projecting on him, and I wish he would stay safe and healthy. And that these 18 months pass by quickly.

hi who are your favourite touhou characters and why im mostly curious about the why

amazing question! the following list is in no particular order. wriggle does happen to be my favorite but it’s not by a huge margin or anything

first up we got wriggle herself. i’m gonna be honest the way i interpret her bears absolutely no resemblance to her canon character, but i think that the fandom has generally kind of adopted an interpretation of her that’s nothing like her in canon so i excuse it if everyone else does it.

why i like her? really cool design obviously the cape is really sick. what actually draws me to her though is mostly the fact that she’s a member of team 9. she’s basically just “kind of silly bug woman who’s really weird about bugs” which creates a lot of really funny relationships with other characters. i tend to write her as more of the “average person” of the group which also makes her relationship with mystia that write about a lot really fun because it’s just these two pranksters that are background characters from a story perspective and a life perspective (i mean they really are just random youkai). basically everything involving her is just… really casual, and fuzzy. she just doesn’t have a whole lot going on

also i get to write her being autistic about bugs which is really fun.

another one of my favorite characters is remilia, who i’ve only really had an excuse to write once. i go into way more detail about this in microsm chapter 6 but basically i just really love her contrasts. i like writing her as both childish and mature, both fearsome and welcoming, both powerful and vulnerable. it’s clear she does care very dearly for those in the mansion and i just love giving her a soft side where she does want the best for everyone, even if she looks evil. oh she eats people? god forbid women do anything

also because she’s a vampire who owns a badass huge western mansion. that’s so cool

in addition we have reimu, who i honestly just find to be a really nuanced character. i love writing her getting really existential about her life and getting worried about shit. i kind of project onto her sometimes but we’re not here to discuss that. she has a very interesting personality, fluctuating between stern or sad or determined or funny depending on even the slightest factors. being the main character she’s had the most actual stuff happen to her, she has the most story and has the most relationships with other characters. there’s really anything you can do with her, and if you can get her personality right then you can even make a good story out of her going on a walk. case in point: residual by me

the next ones i don’t really like for such complex reasons i’m not gonna lie

ran, who is probably my #2, is just a really nice character. it’s fun to write her being all motherly to chen, it’s fun to write her being a calculator for yukari, it’s fun to write about her being gay obviously, and i really like her character design. she’s just nice and i would definitely be friends with her if that were possible. i’m aroace but whatever the equivalent of a waifu is for aroaces? she’s that to me. i don’t wanna fuck her i just am obsessed with her non-romantically

I adore 𝐆𝐢𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭’s appearance and personality so much,, I think with the whole albino thing he definitely stands out from the other characters and he’s this lanky muscular guy and I feel like he has a crooked grin and a crooked nose and he’s probably got a scar here or there and when he was younger he was a TOTAL wildcard and crazy but I think he’s getting older and is trying to keep up that image but like!!! he probably does old people stuff!!!! he does crossword puzzles and asks ludwig for help with the computer and feeds the birds on his morning walk (which he goes on to prove to himself that he’s still young and it’s definitely unreasonably long)!!!!! and sure he can party with his friends but he also definitely has old people chats with tino over coffee, I think it started when Ludwig came along and he had to pull himself into some semblance of a “father figure” and be responsible for a life and he really had to mature and put some of his crazy ways behind him and now he sits on the couch and watches bird documentaries like a loser but he SWEARS he’s still this cool crazy sexy party animal,,,, there’s just something about that that I love so much it’s so interesting to me it gives him depth and also he’s just hot I don’t think it’s super surprising he’s my favorite I feel like I make it decently obvious if you ever talk to me for longer than 20 minutes

I’m not super super into shipping and I came into the fandom off of ‘x reader’ content but there’s a few that I really enjoy!!! I love 𝐒𝐮𝐅𝐢𝐧 and their dynamic and I love reading headcanons about it and I love giving it way more depth than there is in the show and it just seems super natural to me! when I think of them I definitely think “yeah there’s something going on there” but that also applies to a ton of different pairs,,,,, I also like 𝐏𝐫𝐮𝐂𝐚𝐧 and think they’re very cute together and when it comes to them I so default to bad boy good boy dynamic but there’s so much nuance to be explored there for sure and it’s overall just super super cute to me! I don’t know if they would fall into a totally essential category for me but I do like them a ton! I also don’t think many ships would fall into essential because I definitely mostly focused on content revolving around making each character available to make the story more appetizing for a reader and easier to project into but I think it is something I do like and something I wouldn’t mind exploring more since I’m getting more involved w the fandom again!!!

it was a beautiful day of wallowing in No Content Hell about a certain fandom of mine. at that point, sanders sides is like some sort of limbo to me, consisting of mostly things i used to like and very little of things i truly, genuinely still like and care about. the lack of episodes also made this feeling worse.

suddenly u got a new episode! or short, or whatever. and it has janus, my fave side, singing a lovely song. and i was stoked! but after watching the video, can u imagine-- can u imagine feeling like gaining more faith in the series only for that to taste bitter by moceit shippers going crazy??? shippers who solely focus on moceit and shoved it on everyones face???? at that time, it felt bad and bitter and i had enough and went on a tag blocking rampage :p thank god for other, more active fandom for sweeping me off my feet and took me away from the place that is the tss fandom. i still carry this bad memory to this day

i think we're really sleeping on just how the two trust each other. and like, they've probably known each other their entire existence. i see too many """hot takes""" and fics of patton manipulating roman's trust for his own benefit, but honestly the way i see it, roman puts a lot of trust on patton because he knows him, and he knows just how big his heart is. and patton tries his best and i think he genuinely trusts roman the same amount! they love each other, man. thats why svsr hurts so much to me. its not about the two extroverts and happy, sun-coded guys getting in a fight. its about a well loved and well maintained friendship on the brink of collapse and i hope they can solve it. i hope they get the closure they deserve.

Hmmm my brains kinda fuzzy since I haven’t read any fic in a while. But I think for me its Hornet being angry constantly with no solid nuance towards why she’s like that. To me she always felt like a young adult/teen who had to grow up fast due to her situation and is trying to mask that fact by putting on what she thinks is a mature persona.

Ig its just the way i hc her but Im just eh if Hornet’s written angry all the time just because she is angry.

I hope this okay to ask feel free to ignore if not but how do you manage to cope with people saying such inflammatory stuff about matty constantly? You seem very adjusted to it, I am usually alright at ignoring it and I know its not true but sometimes I see things people say and I feel a bit sick because that's what people think and what if they think I support that and idk. I get scared there might be truth in it sometimes even though I don't think that and it gets difficult to cope with. I really strongly believe in having nuance in a situation, being critical of the people you enjoy instead of blindly praising them and not putting people on pedestals, which is why I still engage with matty because to me he is a guy who says and does stupid things occasionally like most people realistically do. But people see it so black and white and you're either a good person or you're not and I hate that and it gets to me sometimes.

For me, it's a mixture of different things. The first being that I've tested my own beliefs and so I'm more sure of them than ever. That's part of what I love about being a fan of Matty. He's constantly challenging me. Whenever he does or says something that I personally wouldn't do, I stop and ask myself why. Would I not do it because I think it's wrong? or would I not do it because I have been conditioned to behave a certain way automatically (whether by culture, by upbringing, by societal expectations of women and femininity, etc) and its never occurred to me that there might be an alternative until he just showed me? So, that way, my own thinking is under the microscope, and if something doesn't hold up, I get rid of it, if something remains firm then I have to agree to disagree with him on it (the nepo baby thing is a good example of that. He's just wrong there, lol. Sorry Matty.)

I had a similar moment of doubt to what you're describing when the podcast shitshow happened. Cuz I wasn't entirely disgusted by it. Did I think that some jokes were tone-deaf? Yeah. But I didn't feel AS offended as everyone who was saying they no longer support the band, or their opinion of him has changed forever, or that hes not the same guy who wrote "loving someone" or "love it if we made it" or "jc2005gba" or "people," and hes showing his true colors or whatever. So, I was like "broooo am I the problem? am I blind? is his sexiness making me think that he could do no wrong and its to the detriment of my moral character? so I went back and listened to the podcast THREE FUCKIN TIMES. After some thinking, I felt like okay some jokes really shouldn't have been made, period. Like he fucked up at a handful of moments, BUT the VAST MAJORITY of the reactions were to things taken out of context and were exaggerations of how one SHOULD react. fucking up doesn't mean he's secretly evil and it doesn't cancel out all the good that he's done.

So, I walked away from the whole situation even firmer in my beliefs about what is appropriate and what's not, what I personally stand for as a human, and what I believe about Matty's character. Which is why, when I see that shit that people are saying now, I'm like "they're a bunch of morons." cuz I thought about it and know what's what. I think they did as well maybe they wouldn't be saying half the shit that they are saying. Kissing fans at a show after checking their ID to see that they're of age and after they've consented to it and BEGGED for it is NOT grooming. Saying that he likes hot women is NOT misogynistic, "thank you Kanye very cool" is a LITERAL TWEET by Donald Trump used in an ironic context of a protest song, it's NOT anti-semitic. you see where im going with this...

Does it break my fuckin heart when I see people wishing him relapse and overdosing and death? fuck yeah. This person stopped me from killing myself i don't wanna see people wishing him dead! ESPECIALLY that half the time, I remember that interview moment where he said that he gets nervous when hes not with "my people." like he's aware that hes rough around the edges, he knows it takes a moment to, like, figure out who he is and that not everyone gets it, and he's genuinely grateful to those of us who have given him the space to be himself and who believe in his art enough to take a moment and think about what he does to the point where it makes him feel safe and he doesn't take it for granted. So, to picture him, perhaps scrolling online or whatever and seeing people say this vile shit about him....it makes me sick to my stomach. But I try and deal with it in three ways. 1) I remind myself who Matty truly is (he didn't HAVE to put hijab wearing women in TOOTIME we are literally invisible to popculture i never see myself represented anywhere. we are not considered a demographic at all; he didn't HAVE to write LIIWMI, he didn't HAVE to give airtime to the speech that he gave at the brits in 2019, he doesn't HAVE to go out of his way to support the artists that Dirty Hit supports and keep in touch with young people's concerns, etc) That's Matty. He's always saying that people take girl fandoms for granted but younger female fans are smarter than him and have taught him so much. HE LEARNS from his fans. he doesn't think of us as something has accumulated because of his genius or whatever. 2) I remind myself that this isn't really about Matty at all. These swifties don't believe in being social justice warriors! if they did, they'd be okay with calling out taylor for her mistakes. Or they wouldn't be so nasty as to threaten to listen to her stolen music and stop supporting her re-records. They want justification for their hatred of Matty, and cuz matty's mistakes are so public, they have a lot to use against him.
