AN: You know when you have an idea for a fic, and then that idea grows, and then you think “I could link this to a story I wrote last year”? Well, that!

Summary: Just a normal day for Sam and his two super soldier boyfriends, sketching, reading and wondering how the hell Bucky has managed to smuggle a piano into his room….

Sam had known that when he decided to follow his heart and accept the love of not one, but two, centenarian supersoldiers, that he wasn’t picking the easy path. But when had he ever picked ‘easy’? Every day was a challenge of some description and today was no exception. He should have known that something was coming when it started off so calmly.

Bucky had gone out to the shops this morning, coming home with a secret bag of ‘who knows what’ and was now ensconced in his room, apparently working on a ‘special project’. Sam and Steve knew by now to just let him be - he’d tell them when he was ready. However, it had been while they were waiting in the living room, Steve randomly sketching and doodling at one end of the sofa and Sam trying to make his way through The Hobbit on Bucky’s recommendation at the other, feet tangled together, that they heard a sound that just cemented in Sam’s mind that his life would never be straight forward.

A piano.

They could hear a piano being played in Bucky’s room. Steve’s eyes had lit up, obviously recognising the melody that was being played rustily from behind the closed door, but Sam’s first thought had just been ‘How the hell did Bucky sneak a piano into the apartment?’

“What the hell? Did you know about this Steve?” Sam turned on the sofa to look at Steve, but his blonde boyfriend now had his eyes closed, his right hand moving in time to the music, still clutching a charcoal pencil.

“He’s playing ‘Night and Day’,” Steve replied, dreamily. “He used to play this when we went down Farrell’s on the corner of 16th and 9th. The girls would hang around him, trying to get him to notice them, and if he was lucky, some of the old timers would toss a nickel in his hat. I don’t think I’ve heard him play since he shipped out.”

Sam rolled his eyes. Steve was always so sappy, which was normally endearing, but not in this instance where there were questions to be answered.

“And I’m all for it, really, but how did the piano get in our apartment? I’m guessing you didn’t help him and I sure as hell didn’t.”

At Sam’s words, Steve’s face took on a quizzical expression and, to be honest, it was pretty cute.

“I mean, he could probably carry one in here on his own,” Steve suggested, but it was clear he didn’t really believe what he was saying, even if it was possible.

“Yeah, but without either of us noticing?” Sam countered.

“Maybe Thor helped him?” Steve offered, even less convincingly.

Sam rolled his eyes and shook his head, putting his book down and shifting so he could straddle Steve’s legs and cup his jaw.

“Steve, the situation is weird and you know it.” He dropped a kiss to Steve pink, pouty lips. “Now, I’m gonna go find out what’s going on.”

He straightened and climbed off Steve’s lap. He made it two steps across the room before Steve called after him.

“Sam, wait…” Steve practically stumbled to his feet, his sketchpad and charcoal tumbling to the floor as he did so. He reached out and snagged Sam’s hand. “You know Bucky doesn’t like to be disturbed. We promised to respect that.”

Sam looked at Steve’s earnest face then at Bucky’s door and back again, and his shoulders slumped as he let out a sigh. “You’re right, but you know how much I hate mysteries.”

Suddenly a voice came from behind them.

“It’s not that mysterious, my dear New Cap.”

The two men whirled around to find a pair of blue-green eyes twinkling at them, mischievously.

Steve scowled and took a protective step forwards, fists clenched at his sides.

“Loki!”

The God of Mischief was perched atop the sideboard, legs crossed with the one underneath swinging jauntily.

“Now, now, Captain - sorry. Nomad - don’t get your star-spangled panties in a wad. I’m just here to help.”

Steve let out a low noise, which to Sam’s ear sounded like a growl. It was both surprising and sexy in equal measure.

Loki hopped down, uncaring of Steve’s posturing and took a relaxed seat on the couch.

“I know! It still comes as a surprise to me on occasion. But I will admit to having been very intrigued when the good Sargent’s missive reached me in New Asgard, asking for some assistance. I needed to see for myself the man that had caused you and Stark to fall out. I must say I wasn’t disappointed.”

“You leave Bucky alone, Loki, or so help me…” Steve took another step forward but halted and trailed off when Loki raised his hand.

“I assure you, I have no designs on ‘your Bucky’. My tastes run more to blondes who are even older than you are.”

Sam stepped around Steve, hoping to keep him from launching himself at the smirking demi-god.

“What did Bucky actually ask you to help with?”

Loki turned his head to take Sam in with an appraising look. “Finally, someone who asks the real questions. But then I’m guessing that you don’t have any ridiculous serum making you all addle-pated. You don’t seem so pompously righteous either.”

“You still don’t want to underestimate me though,” Sam quipped back, easily understanding how the others found Loki insufferable.

Loki looked at Sam, opening his mouth as if to make a retort, but then seemed to think better of it.

“Well, anyway,” he said instead, “He wanted help acquiring and secretly installing a Midgardian piano, and then adding magical sound-proofing to his room, so he could practise without either of you knowing. And as a former brainwashing victim myself, I have to admit I was very intrigued to see how he was readjusting. I can see that all it took was the love of two good men, a global pardon and a stint in Africa.”

Steve’s shoulders lost some of their tension at Loki’s explanation, but he was still far from relaxed. “So, let me get this straight - you used your magical abilities to conjure Bucky a piano?”

“My,” Loki drawled, “you really are more intelligent than you seem.”

“And you’re more of an asshole than you seem,” said Sam. “But if you also sound-proofed his room, why can we hear him playing?”

Loki smiled a toothy grin. “Well, I wouldn’t be the God of Mischief if I didn’t do the unexpected every now and again, would I?” With that he stood, brushing imaginary specks of dust from his clothes. “Anyway, it was very nice chatting with you both, but I must be going. Things to do, you know how it is.” Then, with a wave of his hand and a green flash, he disappeared.

Sam and Steve looked at each other in disbelief, still trying to work out what exactly had just happened, when Bucky’s door opened and he came strolling out. The other pair jumped in surprise and Bucky raised his brow.

“What’s going on?” he asked. “Why does Stevie look as though he’s squaring up for a fight?”

Steve looked down at his hands that were still curled into fists and unclenched them.

“I was… just… um… walking through a defensive move with Sam. Wasn’t I?” Steve looked at Sam, his blue eyes imploring.

“Yeah, something like that,” Sam confirmed.

Bucky obviously wasn’t convinced. “Mmm-hmm? You two keep your secrets then. I won’t be offended.” He let out a mock sniff as he made his way over to the sofa, sat down, and then noticed the book on the coffee table. “Hey, Sam, you’re actually reading it. What do you think so far?”

Sam flashed Steve a look of relief that Bucky was now distracted by one of his favourite topics and went to join Bucky on the couch, curling up tight next to him. “It’s great, Buck. But you know what would be even better?”

“What, dollface?”

“If you read it to us. You agree, don’t you Steve?”

Steve smiled broadly at them both, before crossing the carpet and wedging himself down between Bucky and the opposite arm of the sofa, pulling Bucky to half lie with his back against Steve’s chest.

“Sure I do. You’ll read us a chapter, won’t you, baby?”

Bucky smiled at each of his boyfriends in turn. “Anything for you two. But afterwards you gotta tell me what was going on before I came out.”

“Only if,” Steve countered, “you tell us what you were up to in your room.”

“Deal,” said Bucky, and dropped a kiss on Steve’s lips before turning back to Sam and dropping one on his too. “So, chapter five. Riddles in the Dark. When Bilbo opened his eyes, he wondered if he had; for it was just as dark as with them shut.”

Sam let himself relax against Bucky’s side, resting his head on his shoulder, and listened to his deep voice rumble through him. Steve’s arm rested along the back of the sofa, and the tips of his fingers, which could just about reach Sam’s head, traced lazy patterns in his short hair.

Life might not be easy and constantly filled with the unexpected, but thinking on everything else he had, Sam decided he wouldn’t have it any other way.

2023 Challenge Rules

Please note that the rules have changed from last year's, including eligibility criteria and content requirements.

Eligibility

Participants must be 18+.

Participants do not need experience with fanworks or fan events; the event is open to all levels of experience and skill.

You may register as both an author and artist, but you may not make art for your own fic.

Expectations

Participants agree to be respectful and kind in community spaces and to other members of the challenge.

Participants must meet defined deadlines and listen to mods or risk being expelled from the challenge. Dropping out after art claims may result in being banned from future challenges.

You are expected to read, understand, and adhere to the challenge rules. Failure to adhere to the challenge rules may result in disqualification from future rounds. If you do not understand something, it is your responsibility to contact the mods for clarification.

You must have reliable internet and email access.

No participant may offer services in exchange for payment or solicit donations/tips from other participants for any work they do as part of the BBB.

You will be paired with a partner through Art Claims and may not form your own teams. As is the spirit of challenges, you never know who you will be paired with. We ask that you be open and communicative with each other, and work together to make your posting date requests to avoid any conflict. At no point may you drop your team member and choose a new one on your own. If you are having trouble with your partner, please contact the mods for a solution.

All posted art or fics should remain publicly available for at least one year.

Art

Artists must create 1 full piece of visual art for fics claimed. You are free to create more than the minimum number of required pieces at your discretion.

Video edits, playlists, etc only count as a full piece of art for pinch-hitters

Artists cannot work on more than 1 fic unless they are pinch-hitters

All materials and styles of art are welcome, including traditional and digital, illustration of photo manipulation

Art should be a minimum of 540px wide if it will be posted to tumblr, but the final size and orientation are up to the artist.

AI art is explicitly forbidden. All art must be your own original creation.

Art can be embedded in the fic (if the author permits it), posted to the artist’s website of choice, or both. Where art is hosted is at the artist’s discretion.

Fics

Fics must be a minimum of 10,000 words

All fics must tag all relevant warnings even if they are potential spoilers

Your fic must be at least 50% complete with the remainder outlined to qualify for Art Claims.

Authors may not share about their work outside the private authors channel until after art claims to preserve anonymity

Your work should be brand new for the challenge or a previously unpublished WIP, and no part of it may have been published prior to Art Claims (this includes sneak peeks on social media).

Fics must be written in English. If you are multilingual and would like to publish the fic in other languages as translations of the original after the Byler Big Bang posting period is complete, that’s very welcome!

Finished fics must be posted to Archive of Our Own publicly. There will be an official AO3 collection for this round and all fics are expected to be added. You may cross-post (for example, to Tumblr, Wattpad, etc.) but Ao3 is the minimum requirement.

Each author may write a maximum of one fic for this round. If you co-write, that fulfills your eligibility for the round. You may not submit a second fic as a solo author or as part of a second writing team.

If you are co-writing, each author must register individually. Do not sign up as a pair. We need each participant to agree to receive emails.

Dropping Out

If you can’t complete the Byler Big Bang, please contact the mods and we’ll remove you from our mailing list. Be aware there may be penalties depending on when you drop out (please see below).

Do not use social media to announce drops, since we don’t want your partner finding out that way.

If you have already gone through claims and need to drop, please contact the mods immediately so we can arrange for pinch hitters. You must contact your author or artist directly to let them know you’re dropping out. Please know that you may not be eligible to participate in the next round of the Byler Big Bang if you drop post-claims for anything less than an emergency.

In the event that an artist drops out of the challenge before posting occurs, the moderator team will work to find a pinch hit artist for their author. If an author drops, artists will be offered the opportunity to post their art on their original posting date.

In the event of an emergency, please contact the mods as soon as it is reasonably possible and safe for you to do so. We will work with you in any way we can.

in my playthrus at least my most common ways of raising stats (iirc) was like...

BBB challenge, studying in the diner, feeding the Plant, watching dvds/reading books, and answering the questions right in class/doing well on the exams (hehe high academics asap go brrrrrrr)

also playing darts. that raises proficiency if you do well iirc

PoliZ’s WIP Update - 22 Nov 2023

Combining last week & this – I was on vacation and on the go, so didn’t manage much in terms of a word count. I touched 3 fics (3 WIPs) for a total of 1139 words.

On Ao3, I posted:

No Sensation to Compare With This - 1990’s AU with Rhodey and Tony meeting Carol and Maria at a bar just off base before a test flight. (Tony/Maria endgame)

A Close Call - pre-War Stucky with pining!Bucky and love confessions.

Beaten to the Punch - WinterIron College AU - Tony & Bucky as camp counselors with mutual pining.

I have 18 semi-active WIPs 😬 with my current deadlines being the WinterIron Bingo which wraps on 16 Dec and Stucky’Verse Bingo which wraps on 22 Dec.

See below cut for what I’m working on/planning to work on - arranged more or less by bingos/challenges/etc. As always, feel free to send me prompts or plot bunnies as well as asks regarding any of these projects or any other WIPs I’ve got out there. Interaction really helps feed the Muse and keep me motivated!

Seek & Destroy Collab

After reading @psychiccatpanda‘s amazing Morguna and the Green Queen, I got the itch to explore the Soldier’s POV and talked Faustie into collab’ing with me! We’re working on a new part of the series, and I’ve contributed about 900 words towards the 2500-ish we have so far. Going to see if I can squeeze any of my BBB squares into this fic.

WinterIron Bingo - [WIB_R1] (Ends 16 Dec 2023)

I have twenty-one fills completed for this brand-new bingo event that I’m helping mod!

* B column squares for the Iron Soldier badge (complete a bingo with a single work). – Alpha Tony Stark, “That was not my intention.”, James Rhodes, Alpine loves Tony and Blind date. Need to figure out an angle on this - possible remix of A Sugar-Coated Pill?

* G4 - AU: College Students – Posted Beaten to the Punch this morning - WinterIron mutual pining College AU that crosses over with my Volunteering Together square. It came in at 553 words.

N3 - FREE - filling this with Somewhere To Turn - a WinterIron No Powers AU with mall security!Bucky and young!runaway!Tony. It’s crossing over with my BBB Cold square - I’ve tweaked it a bit since posting on Tumblr (coming in at 881 words) and it will go up on Ao3 1 Dec.

* O5 - Gentle – use this poem as inspiration?

Stucky’Verse Bingo Round 1 - [SVB_R1] (Ends 22 Dec)

Thirteen fills, two WIPs and a couple of ideas.

* A1 - Harem - crossover with CABB Secret/Forbidden Relationship - Bucky and shrimpy!Steve are both concubines who love each other more than their lord. I poked at this a little for 71 words.

* B4 - Sugar Daddy - looking for inspiration - combining with CABB Nov Adoptable: Sugar Baby. Possibly shrimpy!Steve and beefy!Bucky?

* A4 - Fairy Tale Curse - this seems custom-made for a continuation of Beyond the Beast😁 Nothing written yet, other than some Vague Ideas.

* C3 - FREE - probably using this for Chapter 2 of Half of the Flesh and Blood That Makes Me Whole - a Bucky POV remix of at least the first part of Take What Was Wrong (And Make it Right), which is currently sitting at 52 words. I’m expecting at least one more chapter, possibly two, depending on how far I want to take the remix.

C5 - Last Resort - Posted A Close Call to Ao3 last Friday. A pre-war Stucky ficlet with protective!pining!Bucky - also filled my HHB Dealing with Extreme Cold, and WFB - Huddling for warmth squares (250 words) along with Whumptober Delirium prompt. It came in at 827 words.

Bucky Barnes Bingo - [BBB_R5] (Ends 10 Jan 2024)

I’ve got sixteen fills, four WIPs, and a couple more Vague ideas.

* B5 - Cold - see WIB FREE square

* U3 - Fireplace - Working on a 1980′s No Powers WinterIron fic set at a ski lodge where Tony’s being wooed by poetry and love letters that Bucky wrote to someone else. Started poking at this as a crossover with a Love Letters prompt and it’s sitting at 129 words.

* C2 - Yelena Belova– The plan is to use this prompt in the next chapter of Peresmešnik, (aka Three Avengers and a Baby), which is currently sitting at 1303 words (600-ish of which are mine).

* C3 - FREE - the October BBB Discord party resulted in a hilarious Mob AU communal story (mobster!Bucky & clueless!Steve plus Clint&Natasha&Scott shenanigans) that several of us did/are going to contribute to Rashomon-style.

* C5 - Marriage of Convenience/Pretend Couple - next chapter of Lady Natasha’s Consort and Lord Steve’s Companion. Got a spark of an idea the other day that might get me a bit further on this fic.

* K3 - Magic - Aro!Bucky healing with a kiss idea?

* Y3 - Alpine - see WIB Iron Soldier combo.

* Y4 - Forgotten Things - using this for Chapter 4 of You Can’t Stop It With a Gun - it’s sitting at 116 words at the moment.

* May Adopted - Insomnia - finally got this filled with The Dead of Night, which also filled a Flash Fiction Friday prompt [#FFF211 An Old Friend] along with my JBB FREE square. It came in at 317 words and will post to Ao3 before this event ends.

* August Adopted: Take the Shot - sounds like a WinterHawk fic to me… maybe cross over with JBB Touch-starved? Whumptober/Fictober possibilities as well.

Tony Stark Bingo Round 7 - [TSB_R7] (ends 15 Feb)

Seventeen fills and one WIPs, with a couple of ideas in play.

* S1 - Galaxy - possibly use in final chapter of Never More to Go Astray ?

* T2 - KINK: Cock-blocking 'bots - I still want to combine this with the Fictober Day 27: prompt "I don't know if they will accept this."

* T3 - A pairing you've never done - Posted No Sensation to Compare With This – inspired by @rebelmeg’s Wingmen and Airmen, Flirting and Flying - it’s a remix/spinoff of the first chapter, where Tony flirts with Maria Rambeau while Rhodey and Carol get to know one another better. It came in at 1093 words.

* T5 - Shawarma - possible crossover with SAUB Canon Divergence – Battle of New York-related?

* A2 - KINK: Concubine - possible crossover with SAUB Gentle Dom

* A3 - FREE – @SomeSortofItalianRoast and I are looking at collabing on a Steve/Tony/Scott fic - maybe throw in a Comfortember prompt?

* R5 - Doppelganger/Evil Twins - The Flash Fiction Friday prompt [#FFF214 Broken Mirror] got me at least a good start on the idea I’ve been playing with for this square. I posted NamNori on Tumblr and have a general idea of how I want to build on it to also fill my SAUB AU: Crack square. It’s currently sitting at 360 words.

Stony AUniverse Bingo [SAUB_R1] (ends 15 Feb)

Another brand-new bingo I’m helping co-mod! Six fills, three WIPs and several crossover ideas already!

* S1 - Edging - Filled this with Ringing in the New, where Tony makes a suggestion to improve/change up their love life. It’s a crossover with a Flash Fiction Friday prompt: How Do You Use ‘It’? and came in at 324 words - I will post it to Ao3 before the event is over.

* N5 - AU: Multiple Identities - Posted The Secrets We Keep to Tumblr. It’s a first person alternating POV ficlet with mutual pining (and secret identity) Stony. It came in at 314 words and will get posted to Ao3 before the event ends.

* Y4 - AU: Soulmates - @chrissihr posted a cool idea about Animated soulmarks, where only your SM sees your mark move - may try to do something with this!

Captain (America) Bottom Bingo - Round 2 [CABB] (ends 28 Feb 2024)

I signed up for a 3x3 card for this bingo and have four fills, one WIPs and a couple of crossover ideas.

A coalition of national progressive advocacy groups on Monday released a list of 10 policy objectives that it believes President Joe Biden should embrace to consolidate support for his high-stakes electoral rematch against presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump.

The platform—released by Our Revolution, Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), and the State Democratic Party Progressive Network—frontloads the threat that Trump and the fascist movement at his back pose to basic freedoms and democracy itself.

"The 2024 presidential election presents a challenge for progressives to preserve and amplify our voice while fighting the most dangerous threat to U.S. democracy in our nation's history," reads the platform's introduction. "Our best strategy to advance both goals is to become state and national Biden delegates at the state and national Democratic Party conventions, and to elect Joe Biden for a second term. Throughout this process, we must advocate for a progressive policy agenda that builds and expands upon progressive elements of President Biden’s original Build Back Better (BBB) plan."

"With our support and voice," the document adds, "progressives may persuade and enable President Biden to achieve more progressive policy objectives during his second term and prevent a fascist takeover."

The first plank of the agenda urges Biden and the Democratic Party to "develop and repetitively use more aggressive messaging against and educate the public about the dangers of fascism including exposing and condemning Project 2025, the fascist blueprint for a second Trump administration."

It also calls for more concrete policy changes such as filibuster reform, term limits for Supreme Court justices, and the passage of robust voting rights legislation in the face of l arge-scale Republican attacks on the franchise.

Other planks of the agenda include working to end the privatization of public goods such as housing and healthcare, using "all means available" to raise the long-stagnant federal minimum wage and slash poverty, raising taxes on billionaires and corporations, overturning the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, canceling student debt and establishing tuition-free public college, expanding Medicare benefits, declaring a climate emergency, and conditioning U.S. aid to Israel.

The groups said Monday that they plan to submit the policy agenda to the Democratic Party Platform Committee ahead of the Democratic National Convention in August.

"We intend this to be a unifying effort, urge the second Biden administration to fulfill the 10 policy objectives outlined in these proposals, and invite the Democratic presidential campaign to engage in dialogue with us to achieve unity and progressive electoral support around them," the progressive coalition said Monday.

Fave Long Fics

good ol' @arahir is asking for everyone's fave long fics, so here are mine!

sorry if the rambling is a bit long, I just want to express my love <3

🌟: denotes a fic that belongs in the literary equivalent of the Louvre-- a stunning piece of writing even outside of its contribution to the fandom

JJBA

🌟 scheherazade -- shylittleghost; Josuke/Okuyasu-centric, but multiple POVs; canon-compliant prequel/sequel to part 4, necessary to read/watch part 4 to understand

this is one of those fics that not only elevates the original work in several ways, but it's a stunning piece of writing as a whole. the flow and tone of the piece is so unique and difficult to describe, with a fitting balance between mystery/horror and deadpan humor, and uses the narrating voice to play with the 4th wall in a really fun and satisfying way. oh, and one of the last chapters is a little RPG game, adding a bit little multimedia twist <3

BEASTARS

🌟 Mongrels and Strays series (mainly Mongrels and Lockjaw)-- HassouToby; technically Mongrels' primary ships are Legosi/Haru and Louis/Juno, but it's more genfic with multiple POVs. Lockjaw is Pina/Riz-centric; canon divergence from ch 156 of the manga, so it's necessary to read at least that far to understand

I have a complicated love/hate relationship with Beastars, but this fic honestly retroactively makes Beastars a better experience, imo. it not only enhances the source material, but engages and challenges its implications in ways that I frankly think Beastars itself failed to, introducing a new final antagonist, new thematic tension, and new challenges for the main characters to face. more than anything though, Mongrels feels like what the end of Beastars should have been. this fic isn’t afraid to up the stakes and have actual consequences, making the central conflict feel like a real threat to both individual characters and society as a whole. this fic is intense and brutal, and it’s not afraid to make the characters you love hurt

Homestuck

🌟 Detective Pony -- sonnetstuck; Dirk-centric(??); it's an extension of a one-off joke in the comic, but it's not necessary to know HS to read it (but it's def more satisfying if you're at least familiar with the Alpha kids)

does this fic even need to be stated, for any HS fan? this is a classic of classics, the best rec any HS fan could give. a fic that starts off with a goofy joke from the original comic (a Pony Pals kid's book that Dirk has edited with silly commentary), which gradually snowballs into a much deeper story. a stunning piece of writing, I rank it among the best works of metafiction literature of all time. this fic does an incredible job of imitating Hussie's writing style (specifically Dirk's voice) and the multi-media presentation of HS, it almost feels like it popped straight out of the comic

Endangered -- Mortior; Dirk/Hal, Dirk-centric; robot-apocalypse AU, not necessary to know anything about HS

rly fun au, and one of my fave whump fics, for any whump fans out there. it's also one of my favorite depictions of an AI personality, like the approach to relationships and perceptions feels believable

The Magnus Archives

🌟 Two Ships Passing -- pyrites; Gerry Keay/Jon Sims-centric; a canon-divergent au starting before canon which slightly shifts the flow of the original story, so it's not strictly necessary to be familiar with TMA, but it helps

I must admit I never got around to finishing this one after it finished updating (😭), but trust me when I say this fic is stunning. some scenes still grip me 'round the throat to this day even just thinking about them. and the additional lore/background-building for certain characters is so so fitting and satisfying, it adds so much depth

To The Moon and Back series (main fic is Banned Book Week) -- verboseDescription; several different POVs, though BBB is Gerry/Tim-centric; the main fic diverges from canon after season 3, so I suppose knowledge up to that point is fine

another one I need to get around to finishing someday (idk why I dropped off a bunch of TMA fics specifically...), but this one introduces some interesting new character dynamics, and additional lore-building for many of the characters that adds fun new depth. also a few OCs whom I simply adore <3

What Belongs to the Sea -- TwoDrunkenCelestials, WhyNotFly; starts Elias/Jon, with Jon/Martin endgame, Jon-centric; "Jon is a selkie" au, and the fic implies/explains the rest of canon well enough to read without being familiar with TMA imo

this fic approaches canon worldbuilding from the direction of a different species, giving a unique new perspective on established truths of the setting. I also love the way Jon's character is so different, but still fundamentally the same kinda guy-- "fuck around and find out"-ass man lmao. not to mention Elias' fucked-up dynamic with Jon is ramped up here in a really delicious way, it rly puts their canon dynamic into perspective

Danny Phantom

🌟 Phantom of Truth / Shadow of a Doubt -- HaiJu; Danny Fenton & Maddie Fenton-centric; "what if" scenario divergence from an unspecific point in canon, would prolly be best to be familiar with the show but u can prolly get away with some wiki skimming

this one's a classic, and one of the big contributors to the "dissection/vivisection" genre of whump in the DP fandom, haha. it's such an intimate analysis of Danny's relationship with his mom, and it refuses to pull punches on Danny's situation and resulting trauma. I think it also does an excellent job challenging Maddie's perception/ethics in genuine and fundamental ways

Rise of the Guardians (movie)

🌟 Shadows and Light series -- not_poignant; Jack Frost/Pitch Black, Jack-centric; canon-compliant sequel to the movie (can't speak for book canon), u can prolly get away with reading a wiki summary if u don't wanna watch the movie

one of my fave fics for a decade now, I absolutely LOVE what this fic does for ROTG worldbuilding. so much thought is put into the politics of the fae community, and how magic functions both practically and thematically. and it introduces a ton of cool fae ocs, many of which now have their own stories, as the author has used their fae world here in other original stories as well (would also recommend!!). and the relationship between Pitch/Jack is excellent of course, with a lot of interesting BDSM elements to their dynamic (a common trend in this author's other writing as well)

Mob Psycho 100

🌟 A Breach of Trust -- Phantomrose96; Ritsu, Mob, & Reigen-centric, but multiple other POVs as well; diverges from canon before the start of the canon story, so knowing MP100 isn't necessary

this is a really fun "what if Reigen and Mob didn't meet when they were supposed to?" canon-divergent au. it pushes basically every character to their worst, most self-destructive ends, and it makes me want to throttle some of them (affectionate <3). the fic isn't done yet (as of posting this), but it promises to end satisfyingly-- it just has to put everyone through the wringer first lmao

Welcome to Night Vale

🌟 run, run, fast as you-- -- (orphaned); Cecil/Carlos, Carlos-centric; compliant with early NV lore, mostly diverges in some of Carlos' background and motivations moving to Night Vale. familiarity with s1 would be useful, but not strictly necessary

really really stunning fic, I love the additional lore-building for Carlos and Cecil here, so much is added to their characters. since this is such an old fic, some of the lore here ends up being retroactively false, as the podcast introduced different lore later on. but I almost wish some of the lore here was canon b/c it's just that good (like Cecil's whole thing with the orphanage, and how the orphanage even functions OUGH!)

The Devil Went Down To Georgia (you heard that right, the country song)

🌟 The Devil Went Down to Georgia (And Then Went Down on Johnny) series -- notbecauseofvictories; Johnny/The Devil, Johnny-centric; I guess a modern take on canon, kinda treated like an original story tbh, but like. you can also just listen to the song beforehand

the author clearly has a deep knowledge and passion for music-- especially country music-- and it rly shines through in this fic. the celebration of music and community and country culture here is just. idk, it's like being invited to the table, somehow, I love it. this whole fic is poetry and it makes me ache

Portal

Blue Sky -- wafflestories; Wheatley/Chell-centric; canon-compliant sequel to the second game, necessary to know the games to understand

I must admit it's been several years since I've read this one, so my memory of it isn't quite as strong. but I remember it being a very loving rehabilitation of Wheatley and Chell's relationship, and I believe it's considered a classic by the ship's fans.

How To Train Your Dragon (movie)

I Hear Him Scream -- Rift-Raft; Toothless & Hiccup-centric; diverges from canon at the point when Hiccup downs Toothless with the net at the beginning of the movie, so watching the movie isn't super necessary, tho I imagine most of us have seen it (as we should!!)

I don't know that I would call this one particularly well-written-- it can get kinda awkward and jarring at points, and the end of the story kinda goes off the rails for me. but the premise and worldbuilding make up for it, imo. but I admit I love xenofiction, so I love seeing the deep lore about dragon culture/society this fic presents

Kekkai Sensen

Fleißiger Junge -- TheLennyBunny; Klaus/Leo, Leo-centric; demon/angel au, not necessary to know KKSS

I really love the demon/angel worldbuilding in this one, with a delicious twist of horror that's so fitting to canon /chef's kiss/. and the way Leo's family is characterized (with several OC characters) is so so fun and charming. good eating for the starving Klaus/Leo fans out there 😭

RWBY

🌟 Teaching Qrow -- ByronNightshade; Qrow-centric; a canon-compliant prequel to the canon story, a bit of knowledge about the setting and Qrow's backstory are kinda necessary

I fucking love what this fic does for Qrow's character, it treats him with way more nuance and understanding than canon ever has (tho tbf, most Qrow fans do, lol). and all the additional OCs and building on the subtle implications of RWBY lore... AUGH it's good

My Hero Academia

Hero Class Civil Warfare -- RogueDruid; genfic with multiple POVs; "what if" scenario divergence from an unspecific point in canon, prolly necessary to at least be familiar with the world/characters to a point

really fun "what if this class exercise got got a bit too intense, haha~" au. it introduces a ton of fun new dynamics between the characters, and lets Izuku shine as a badass, chessmaster "villain"

Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint

Imaginary Truths -- Mythril; Kim Dokja/Yoo Joonghyuk-centric; actor au, not necessary to know ORV

this fic does an excellent job translating the canon relationships/dynamics to this setting, and keeps the core of the story/themes intact in rly interesting ways.

new game (+) -- illusionedwhite; Kim Dokja/Yoo Joonghyuk, Yoo Joonghyuk-centric; role-reversal au, and since it starts from the beginning where where canon would have started, I guess it's not technically necessary to read ORV first? but ORV provides more context

this fic is rly careful about the particular way Kim Dokja and Yoo Joonghyuk switch roles-- it's very much about their story roles. their core characters/themes remain intact, they're just interpreted through a new lens here. this is for the fans that read ORV and thought, "what if I want to read ORV again, but slightly to the left?"

Genshin Impact

🌟 Begin Anew, O Lost Child -- DarthPeezy; Childe/Zhongli/Guizhong, Childe-centric; a time-travel au that diverges from canon at the battle with Osial in the Liyue chapter, so familiarity up to that point is necessary

there's something about circularity and connection, here. about reaching across expanses of time to connect with those you love, and those you lost. about the horror of fate, and the hope for a future in spite of it. idk, this fic did something to me

we were lovers -- ThirteenSocks; Kazuha/his unnamed friend, Kazuha-centric; "Kazuha loses his vision" au, with a few twists. this fic doesn't really touch canon involving the traveler, but familiarity with Inazuma is necessary, so at least up through that chapter in-game.

what else can I say except this fic is beautiful-- it has the same melodic quality that I associate with Kazuha himself, so it feels perfectly appropriate.

To Be or Not To Be (Human With You) -- lilbittofmatcha; Aether/Scaramouche, Aether-centric; diverges after the end of the whole Sumeru chapter, familiarity up to that point is necessary

I really really love Traveler fics that acknowledge that the Traveler is essentially an otherworldy alien being, and was perhaps even godlike(??) before landing in Teyvat. I especially love Aether's characterization here, and the obvious comparisons to be made with Scara's situation

Sinking Ships in Liyue Harbor -- whereherbonesareburied; Diluc/Kaeya, Diluc-centric; a "what if Kaeya left" divergence from canon sometime after the events of the Mondstadt chapter. it's necessary to be familiar with Kaeya and Diluc's relationship, so reading up on their lore is best, though familiarity up through the Liyue chapter will help with this one

something about the pacing and framing of this fic really charms me. like, Diluc's journey to find Kaeya is kinda framed as a series meetings with several new people, like snapshots from a photo album? it's fun to see so many different, brief impressions of characters through his eyes

Osomatsu-san

Dissociation Disease -- PyrrhicFiend; Karamatsu-centric; technically features multiple AUs, but the core story is show canon. not strictly necessary to be familiar with the show

a fic I never ended up finishing (someday..), but I remember it being incredibly trippy and bizarre in the best of ways. though it may not be the best fic to read dealing with dissociation themself, because it grapples a lot with warped perception and hallucinations

🌟 Frater, Ave Atque Vale -- (orphaned); Karamatsu/Osomatsu, Osomatsu-centric; fantasy AU, not necessary to know the show

this one's perhaps on the razor's edge of not being long enough for this list, but I'm counting it anyways. there's something about 'brief' writing styles that often captures me, like parsing a scene down to its bare essentials makes the tone/emotion land more powerfully. this fic is probably my favorite example of this style

Voltron: VLD

The Rites of Courtship -- calibratingentropy; Keith/Thace, Keith-centric; canon-divergence from the end of s1 ep12, and it's kinda necessary to be familiar at least to that point, though u might be able to skim the wiki

a rarepair I never woulda considered if a friend hadn't recced this fic to me way back, haha. this fic features some of my favorite alien worldbuilding, with a lot of thought and care put into Galran culture and biology, I think about it a lot as a specevo creator myself

The Favored Champion -- sugarapplesweet; Sendak/Shiro, Shiro-centric; canon-divergence before canon, while Shiro is still a coliseum fighter

real fucked-up Stockholm Syndrome abusive relationship, Shiro goes thru the wringer </3. I love the way the relationship with the Lions is depicted here too, the chapter where Shiro basically screams at the Black Lion grips me by the throat. another great example of cool Galra worldbuilding too, not as heavy on the bio side as the last one but fun to see either way!

Tokyo Mew Mew

The Deal -- RizuOnceAgain; Ichigo/Quiche, Ichigo-centric; canon-divergent from an unspecified(?) point in canon, and I um. I've never watched TMM and know very little beyond TMM's basic premise and main characters? so take that as you will

I don't often read fics from things I'm not familiar with, but I trust my friend's recs with my life, and this one did not disappoint. I can't speak on how faithful it is to the original, but Ichigo/Quiche's dynamic here makes me go crazy nutso bonkers!! it has me banging on the walls and chewing furniture, oh my god!! it almost makes me wanna watch the show even tho I know I won't like it nearly as much as this fic 😭.

Just read Breathe Bubbles below too! Dang you’re good at describing the panic of drowning really well! Now that I think about it, it also happens in Flood tide of sunshine and stars, and I’ve already commented on the wonderful Deep Dreams of course, but every time it feels unique to the situation! You have a pretty good handle on the horrors of water in general XD It’s really funny to me that in BBB y/n might not be so aware of it but they really let that intrigue and charm of the Attendants convince them to try and face their fear huh? I would dig my heels so hard haha! Though perhaps they do hope to just get over this panic, since it seems pretty extreme. I assume later in the story Sun and Moon will discover this fear is rooted a bit more deeply than your average fear of water that comes from just not having learned to swim before too. Trying to help someone overcome a phobia will probably be more of a challenge to them, unless of course they have dealt with a similar situation before (just without the flirty encouragement htfhgfyg)

Ah, thank you! I have a lot of experience of writing drowning/watery scenarios because of my original book so I'm really happy that you enjoy those descriptions (even if they aren't pleasant)!

AND OH YES! BBB Y/N would never even think about sticking their little toe in a pool but when the boys tell them they have swim lessons the next morning, Y/N just might appear, just for them ♥ Of course there is a personal desire to get better, but ah, that is at great odds with their deep dark fear.

Sun and Moon have dealt with all kinds of fears when it comes to the water, mostly with little kids, but hey, these two are not the type to back down from a challenge as pretty as Y/N!

Book Backlog Busting Reading Challenge!

Sadly not a lot to report in this update; I had such a busy week that I didn't get a chance to finish any books, although I have been continuing to read daily and hope to be able to show off some new volumes next week.

But since I don't have books to talk about, I decided it would be fun to show you guys the app that got me back into reading: StoryGraph!

Storygraph allows you to track the number of books you've read in a year, set reading goals, join reading challenges, and even track your progress through each individual book, providing extremely valuable The Numbers Go Up motivation.

They recently introduced a feature allowing you to track a reading streak, which is very helpfully customisable for those who don't have much time for reading: I've set my goal to at least one page per day, but you can set weekly or monthly goals and track streaks that way!

Storygraph also allows you to organise your reading, allowing you to mark up to five books as "up next" and putting them at the top of your To-Read Pile, where they're easily found - obviously invaluable for me in a challenge like this, or anyone else with a lot of books in the backlog!

The app can also give you a variety of statistics about your reading choices, for those of you who love data and pretty graphs (ME!!!) - I included a few favourites here.

Worth stressing that, whilst there is a Storygraph Plus which you can pay for and has additional features, everything I have described in this post is COMPLETELY FREE. No ads either, unless you count opportunities to participate in book giveaways as advertising. I don't have the paid version but I have been considering getting it because I love the functionality of this app and how much it has helped to keep me focused on reading.

I love it so much that I recommend it to everyone I know, and now I'm also recommending it to tumblr, lol.

July Break Bingo [JBB_23] (Ends 31 Jul)

Signed up for a 3x3 card for this all fandoms, no minimums bingo event (@julybreakbingo ) because of course I need more prompts! 😁😬 I’m aiming for a blackout with three fills and four WIPs with another idea or two to work on. I’m playing a bit fast and loose with a few prompts, but I hope y’all enjoy anyways!

* A1 - “I can keep going” -filling this with Chapter 3 of Technicalities (Stucky professort/student AU) which is a crossover with my ACB Mutual Pining and SVB Experiment squares -- A bit of manual labor brings Professor!Steve and Student(but not Steve’s student)! Bucky closer together. It’s coming in at 1305 words and will post on 7/26.

* A2 - “I think I’m losing my mind.” Filled this with What Happens in San Francisco… in combination with the Flash Fiction Friday prompt [#FFF208 Reporting the Scoop] and a SVB adoptable: Celebration Sex. It will eventually get posted to Ao3.

* A3 - Word: Advantage or Antonyms -- Flling this with Chapter 3 of A Sugar-Coated Pill (WinterIron Omegaverse Sugar Daddy AU) which is coming in at 1341 words and will post on 7/21. It’s crossing over with my HBE "How Did You Meet?” + High Stakes Op and TSTOT Omegaverse prompts, along with my WIB AU: A/B/O square. Bucky and Tony continue to make a good team, then sugar baby!Tony asks Bucky for a favor.

* B1 - Location: Train Tracks - combining this with my BBB Never the Fall that Kills You square for an angsty Winter Soldier fic - it’s sitting at 104 words and fighting me a bit at the moment. 😬

* B2 - FREE -- Will probably combine with this or next week’s Flash Fiction Friday.

* B3 - Pining/Longing/Being Needy - filling this with Chapter 4 of A Sugar-Coated Pill where Bucky has a bit of a problem, and Tony offers to help. It’s crossing over with HBS Week Nine (”Where do you want me?” + In My Lap), and ACB Mate-Induced Heat - the chapter is coming in at 1395 words and will post on 7/28.

* C1 - Location: Art Studio - Filled this with Teacher, Teacher, Can You Reach Me? which posted this morning. I combined this with my SAUB AU: Teacher and TSB Dares/Bets squares and TSTOT Best Friend prompt for a Tony & Rhodey bro-fic that is also a SteveTony meet cute. It came in at 1604 words.

* C2 - Moving In/New Home - filled with Starting Something New,

* C3 - Mutual Pining – maybe use this as an excuse to get my Centerfold Stucky fic finally started…? Plan B - combine with Technicalities - Chapter 3

Hot Bucky Summer [BBE_HBS] (Ends Aug 33)

Another @buckybarnesevents event, this time with weekly smexy prompts. My goal is to complete at least two fics/chapters per month for this challenge and have actually filled/will fill three of the 4 weeks for June and July so far.

It will cross over with SVB Comforting Insecurity - it’s sitting at 254 words at the moment and will post either 8/11 or 8/16.

Week Twelve - “Who’s My ___”+ Good Boy - probably will fit with the future Chapter Four of Finding Something Fresh - crossing over with SVB Tied to A Bed. This chapter would post either 8/18 or 8/23

Week Thirteen - FREE WEEK - “Bossy” and “Bondage” are two suggested prompts - I can probably do something with either/both of these. 😁
