When his sister gets married, Mike and the rest of the Hawkins crew travel to attend. Amongst family problems and resisting the urge to be happy, Mike Wheeler has a bigger problem: he’s in love with his best friend at a time when love itself is the highest celebration. Even bigger than that problem? They’ll be standing on the same steps of an altar during a wedding, and his imagination keeps running wild. Throughout the rehearsals, the ceremonies, the dances, and miscommunications one after the other, Mike realizes that the love of his life might actually feel the same, no matter how much he tries to keep himself from believing it. (feat. Mike’s struggle to accept that he should pursue what makes him happy, i.e. Will, and Will’s refusal to let Mike slip by him no matter how hard he tries.)

It’s 1990 and the party needs to raise money to help them get to their first ever Comic-Con! After their bake sale on their college campus fails miserably, the party decides to try something a little more exciting to raise cash: a kissing booth. To Mike’s surprise, Will volunteers to be on the receiving end of the smooching for the fundraiser. Amidst mixed signals, secrets from a drunken party the year before, jealousy, a lot of note passing, and a surprise gift, Mike and Will are forced to confront their feelings.

The news of the prince with the miraculous fingers, the blessed strokes, spreads far, and it spreads fast. In about roughly half an hour, every citizen in the kingdom knows of the prince who gives life. The populace calls him a tiny blessing, granted by the gods. They call him godlike, whisper of his legendary feat as if it’s a revelation meant only for them. They rewrite the history books in his honor, frame fables in honor of his stunt. 

They clamor around in their houses and wax poetic about how he’s destined to save the world, far away from the palace, and yet the force of their hopes places pressure on the little boy all the way over there. They grant his tiny palms and delicate shoulders Atlas’ duty and pray to all the existing deities that their hope in him isn’t misguided.

The Byler Big Bang 2023

The Byler Big Bang is a fanwork event based on the Stranger Things ship of Mike Wheeler & Will Byers meant to create an explosion of content while providing structure, deadlines, and of course, community support to writers and artists. 

How does a Big Bang work?

A Big Bang event is a challenge for fic writers to write longer fanfictions (10k words or more), partnering them with an artist to create accompanying artwork. 

Writers sign up to take part in the challenge and begin writing stories. When the early drafts of the stories are available, artists will be able to claim stories to work on. Then, during designated posting periods, the author and artist post their new work for the fandom to see!

How do I get involved?

Writers can sign up as authors to participate by creating a fanfiction of 10k words or more over the course of the next months.

Artists can sign up as artists to participate by being paired with an author to create 1 or more artworks to accompany their fic.

Artists can also sign up as pinch-hitters to create additional art for works in the event that other artists drop out after claims.

Sign-ups for authors and artists will open on July 1.

When Lonnie Byers catches his youngest son in the arms of another boy, he calls in that favor owed to him by rancher Jim Hopper in Lenora: Will must work as an unpaid ranch hand and learn to "man up." And when Mike visits for Christmas in 1995, his mom asks him to help clear out some junk in his room and down in the basement before he returns home to Indianapolis. But when he comes across an old trunk containing his Supercom walkie-talkie and ham radio, he discovers something strange that has the potential to change everything…

Will sets his backpack by his feet and starts layering on his winter garb—coat, scarf…

“So what’re you gonna do while I’m gone?—besides Christmas stuff, of course.” Mike asks, inching the slightest bit closer and making Will’s stomach flutter.

They’ve been doing this little dance of theirs a lot lately. It started back in the summer with their hands brushing against each other in dark movie theaters, and then there were all the times he would look up to find Mike staring (or vice versa), and of course all the times he’s caught Mike’s eyes darting down to his lips, because that’s happened so often he’s lost count. But they never say anything about it. It’s quite confusing really, like they were playing a strange game without a rule book. And sometimes Will isn’t entirely sure if it’s all just in his own head or if Mike was aware of it too. But one thing was certain, absolutely every time he’s alone like this with Mike, he wants to burst into a million pieces because he can’t get his heart to stop racing, or quell the butterflies living in his stomach, or simply ignore that crazy impulse he gets to lean in and kiss him.
