Please Let Me Wonder - Riddler x Reader
Part 1
Words: 1.2k
Warnings: none yet(?) (please let me know if you find something I should put here).
Summary: Stuck on the streets of Gotham, you're in dire need of some aid.
A/N: Not quite sure where this will go but it was a product of my attempt to kill time...Enjoy!
Why had you left the district so suddenly? Perhaps you had been too rash– a proposal from the man you despised most wasn’t the ideal scenario, but it was better than being homeless in the desolate streets of Gotham. You’d been casually dating this conceited businessman from an infamous family and he had suddenly proposed marriage at a work dinner. His regret must have been soon felt as you had promptly rejected and fled the restaurant, returning home and packing the little belongings you had to retreat to the streets in search of somewhere. Anywhere. You weren’t ready for the banality of marriage– the nothingness it would bring to your life, especially with a coarse and unfeeling man like Oscar. To be a trophy wife, ever following him around like a lost shadow– meek and mild.
No. That wasn’t your future, you couldn’t be part of that disgusting man's life– not after you discovered the scale of corruption and depravity involved in his nepotist business. Though trudging through the rain-drenched streets of Gotham, you wondered whether morality was the best path to tread.
You veered down a commonly used alleyway and passed the dreaded Iceberg Lounge, the perfect spot for the scum of Gotham City to congregate and discuss their filthy schemes. Never had you held such a hatred for strangers but since learning about the hidden secrets from Oscar, you carried a massive load of resentment for the sick wolves and the stupid, naive sheep that roamed Gotham. How could people be so blind to the corruption that plagued the city?
Looking outside the lounge you glared at the gathering of miscreants bellowing drunkenly and the paranoid dropheads mumbling incoherently. Gotham would be a far better place without them in it.
You scoffed and crossed the road, continuing your search for a place to stay.
Upon crossing, you spotted a dark figure lingering on the corner of the curb, backlit by a flickering streetlight. You were always wary of strangers– especially suspicious-looking ones like that– but the streets were busy and surely no one would be stupid enough to assail you in public.
The closer you got, however, the less menacing the figure looked. It appeared to be a male wearing an oversized blue parka with a chubby, ruddy face and dorky glasses perched on his nose. Despite his friendly look, his intense stare made your heart jump.
You managed to smile weakly at him, hoping to placate any aggressive intentions. He looked shocked at the action– his eyes lit up and a bashful smile curved on his face, making his eyes crinkle and cheeks flush red.
In return, you couldn’t help but beam at the sweet reaction and an idiotic thought crossed your mind.
He looked like a local– he’d know the cheapest motel around here, right? You stopped in front of him and stared up at his imposing frame.
“Hi,” you said quietly, your voice barely rising above the sound of the pounding rain, “do you, ah- do you know anywhere to stay around here? I’m stuck for the night– kinda need a motel or something. Can you help?”
Again, he seemed surprised at the unexpected attention and blinked blankly, his owlish eyes looking down at you.
It almost seemed as though he was running over a thousand scenarios in his head before he responded to your question. His voice was soft and low when he spoke.
“I– I don’t quite know of any motels, no– at least none that would be safe enough for you to stay in.” He frowned at you sympathetically, as if he felt he was failing you, “You can come to my apartment to get dry if you like, though– and to search up for some motels! I have WiFi… ha!”
Oh God, who was this fucking weirdo?
You were running out of options, though. The later it got, the more dangerous it would be to wander on the streets of Gotham alone.
As if sensing your inner turmoil he opened his mouth again, “I swear I’m not… going to do anything. I just can’t bear the thought of someone like you being out alone around here. It’s not safe,” He shook his head fretfully, “No, not safe at all.”
You sighed, defeated.
“Okay, sure. I could definitely do with warming up a little bit. Thank you.”
He grinned widely at you and pointed up to the building behind him.
“It’s just there. Not far to go at all! You’ll be warm and dry in no time.”
His smile didn’t seem to falter for the whole trip up to his apartment– not even when he had to push the floor button in the elevator three times because it was jammed, though a grunt of frustration did escape his throat.
When you finally reached the door and he fumbled with the lock, veering open the door, he shuffled inside and welcomed you. His arms flourished out and gestured to his dank, dismal flat. The walls were damp and covered in a plethora of wall decor varying from illegible scribbles on paper to large graffitied text. Everything was cluttered– not one surface was left unscathed from nonsensical rubbish and the whole place was tiny and cold.
You weren’t sure whether it was better than outside at all.
Still, you smiled gratefully and entered the residence, shrugging off your wet coat (which he graciously took from you and placed on a wonky coat rack).
“Thank you so much for this, you’re a lifesaver…” You paused, realising you didn’t know his name.
“Edward. My name’s Edward.” He mumbled, messing around with something in his small kitchen.
You responded with your own name, which he repeated to you joyfully.
“That’s a pretty name.” He said, turning to you and beaming maniacally once again, “Pretty name for a pretty face.”
You laughed awkwardly and nodded in thanks, resorting to patting at your damp hair awkwardly.
“But seriously, thank you, Edward. I don’t know what I would have done without you.”
At this, he smiled bashfully as a deep blush crept up his pale neck.
“You’re very welcome.” Once again he turned to his kitchen and reached up into a cupboard, pulling out two chipped mugs, “Would you like a coffee? Or maybe tea?”
He waved the mugs teasingly and you couldn’t help but agree to a warm cup of tea.
“Please, do sit down, I’ll bring them over in a sec.”
You made your way over to a worn, frayed couch of a mossy green colour and plopped yourself onto the stained cushion, leaning back and squeezing your eyes shut. How had you let yourself end up like this?
Before you could dwell too much on the situation at hand, the clank of two mugs being placed down roused your attention and you sat up from your slouch.
“Thank you,” you smiled lazily, “Again.”
Edward simply nodded in recognition and perched beside you, not quite relaxing back into the seat.
You took gentle sips of your tea while Edward asked non-invasive questions about yourself, commenting here and there when he had something to say. He was nice– cute. You felt a bit mean for your previous prejudice against him, it seemed he was genuinely trying to help.
The more you sipped and talked, the more tired you felt and the heavier your eyelids seemed to be.
You’re not sure when it happened but soon your cup slipped from your hand, spilling hot tea onto your lap and the couch before your head lolled and your eyes slid shut.

For the Project Diva asks!: 👑 🎧 🎹 ⭐️ 🎶 🎮
Hope you’re doing good today 🐸🫶
Thank youuuu!!!!
👑 - Favourite module/s (favourite character edition)?
Diamond Dust, Requiem, Genius, Bashful Parka Blue, and Campus are probably my favourite Kaito modules off the top of my head. And also Cyber Cat obviously.
🎧 - Any random facts/anecdotes you want to talk about?
Not exactly pjd related but also kind of so don't get mad at me
Like a month ago I opened up Kaito's pjd extend model in paint 3D but I forgot to add his textures so
Tumblr media
🎹 - Did you get into vocaloid via Project Diva or vice versa?
I think I answered this back when I first posted this ask game, so I'm just gonna copy paste my answer from that post if that's cool:
I got into vocaloid I think maybe 2-3 months before I played my first ever Project Diva game. I was aware of the series pretty much as soon as I got into it but I didn’t have a chance to play any of it for a while.
⭐ - Difficulty you usually play on?
It depends but I usually play on hard but there are still a few songs that I prefer to go normal on. I've being trying to work up to going for extreme but I haven't had any luck yet.
🎶 - Favourite song to play?
Nekomimi Switch, Luka Luka Night Fever, Common World Domination, Electric Angel, and Snowman :]
🎮 - Have you ever played any other vocaloid rhythm games (project mirai, prsk, MtM#, IA/VT, etc)?
This is also one I've previously answered (on the same post even) however unlike before this answer's changed somewhat since I've made this ask game.
I managed to fix up (most of) the issues I was having with Project Mirai DX so I've been playing it on/off for the past 2-3 weeks or more. I love it so much (pjd extend's still my favourite though) everything just looks and feels so silly (and also because it's a more recent game there's more than like. One Kaito song). Also Megpoid the Music# I will never be normal about that game even though it hurts to play.

Kirby Copy Ability Thoughts
Animal - Pretty cute, useful for digging, decent in combat, would love to see it come back
Archer - Perfect, wonderful, amazing. Love varied movesets.
Backdrop - Great when merged with fighter later
Ball - I hate this one, yet I would love to see it return
Beam - A classic, prefer it when it has a more diverse moveset. Love the dash air attack and the infinite air spin
Beetle - One of my favs, super fun and fluid to use
Bell - Again, slept on, really enjoy the dash attack and the look
Bomb - I always avoid this one, it just feels very plain jane to me
Bubble - Gets a little overwhelming to have to manage all the bubbled abilities, but genuinely interesting. Would love to see a way for it to return.
Burning - Great when it becomes merged with fire later
Circus - Not a huge fan of this one, doesn't feel like I am in control
Cleaning - Interesting how it is worthless for Kirby but good for his friends, and love that Star Allies uses it to reference those games
Cook/Crash/etc. - I barely ever use these unless they are obviously offered right before a boss fight
Copy - Such a funny one. Niche, but I wouldn't mind seeing it return. The Tac is such an iconic enemy too
Cupid - bring him back! Feels like a downgraded UFO, which I like. More abilities like this that really change the way Kirby moves, for better or worse
Cutter - A classic, maybe my favorite of the core abilities. Great for bosses once you can aim and charge it.
Doctor - Not a huge fan. Cute theming but feels like it lacks a gameplay purpose
ESP - Good on the mech for that one double boss fight, but otherwise cute theming and underwhelming power.
Fighter - Love to see it every time. The original varied moveset. Lost a bit of its uniqueness as other abilities also gained varied movesets but its always fun to see the flashy animations
Fire - Very reliable, love it for safely bashing bosses. Love the fire dash, love the flame wheel drop in Triple Deluxe
Freeze/Ice - I miss when he would turn blue for this one but the Parka is cute too! Love the ice blocks, the air attack, and most of all the iceball roll from Return to Dream Land. Always a fun and cute one.
Ghost - Never unlocked it but seems odd
Hammer - I mean, the king of weapon abilities. Always try to hold it as long as possible. Great for bosses. Love the dash air attack
Jet - Love using this in enviroments designed for it, fun that it turns the mech into a shmup
Laser - Really like this one for unique puzzle solving but less so for boss fights. Bring it back! I'd love to see this mix with other powers or an Ultra/upgraded version too
Leaf - A little underwhelming for such a late addition, but I really like this one for hitting aerial enemies. Feels situational. Bring it back.
Light - LOL I forgot about this one, its funny. Bring it back for the lolz
Magic - Enjoyed this in Squeak Squad, felt wacky but usable. Bring it back.
Metal - Superior to stone in every way (except cute references). Bring it back NOW
Mike - I never use this but I think it is funny that the mech version isn't single use
Mirror - THE GOAT, my all time favorite copy ability. Useful for all occasions, especially when they add the pillar attack. Only reason to leave it out of a Kirby game is to give the other abilities a fighting chance for my attention
Missile - I like that it is hard to use. Bring it back
Needle - Sucked until you could shoot the spines.
Ninja - Never connected with this one much despite its ubiquity
Parasol - A bit situational, but a reliable one that ages well as the moveset grows
Plasma/Spark - Was never a huge fan of these until I learned their boss-killing potential late into Return to Dreamland, but I still hate wiggling the stick. RtDL helped by allowing motion control for charing up
Poison - Not bad, its cute, great for boss killing, deserves to return
Sleep - I like there being one bad ability
Spear - Really like this one being included as bandana's weapon!
Stone - Actually never liked this one, maybe it got a better moveset at some point that I never picked up on
Suplex/Throw - Great but prefer when merged with Fighter
Sword - Not really a huge fan except for the dash aerial or mixing with elements or underwater
Tornado - Great for bosses, great for levels. Love its power being counter balanced by its difficulty of use
UFO - I never understood why this is such a rare ability when it seems like it just slows you down
Water - This one seems like it should've been included sooner. Love the dash attack
Wheel - Adore this one, always improves a game by being present. Lends itself to unique platforming level design. Great when you can ride an ally. Hate the mech suit version though
Whip - Never connected with this one, seems like it doesn't do enough damage to be worth using on bosses but isn't mobile enough for level clearing
Wing - Really enjoy this one, I love any ability that changes Kirby's movement options
Yo-Yo - So rare that it really reminds me of Super Star, and I love Gim's design. Really glad this one is in Star Allies.
Overall, I basically just like the abilities in Super Star especially since Mirror and Yo-Yo are two of my favorites. But I also really like Archer, Beetle, and Bell introduced in Triple Deluxe. Shout out to Return to Dream Land too though for Spear and Water. And the last shout out goes to Squeak Squad for having the guts to replace Stone with Metal.

Could you do #40 cancelled holiday party? Thank you!
40. i just found out that a friend of a friend of a friend isn’t hosting their annual holiday party this year, so now how am i going to have my annual run in with you?
from winter writing prompts here
happy xmas eve, if you celebrate it!
-------------------
Newt doesn’t really have many friends, and certainly not enough to warrant a flood of party invitations come December, but for the past few years he’s been able to rely pretty consistently on at least one. Back when the band was still together, his drummer had a pretty cool girlfriend who would sometimes let them tag along as the entertainment for parties around town, and her brother (who was almost as cool as her) ended up liking the way they sounded so much he invited them back to his own parties a couple times. Then he dated Newt’s guitarist, and then he broke up with Newt’s guitarist, and then he dated Newt, and then he broke up with Newt, and it sort of fell apart from there (and so did the band), but the breakup was actually pretty amicable, and he’s never failed to extend the invitation to Newt for his annual holiday bash as a courtesy. And Newt’s never failed to make an appearance. What’s there not to like, you know? It’s free booze, free food, and the chance to not feel like a total loser loner for once. Plus…well. Another reason.
But this year isn’t looking too good for Newt.
“Sick?” Newt says. “What do you mean he’s sick?”
“I mean,” Newt’s ex-drummer says, irritably, “he’s sick. Caught the flu or something. I don’t know, Jackie just wanted me to call and tell you, she didn’t give me any details.”
“Couldn’t he have called me himself?” Newt says.
“No,” Newt’s ex-drummer says, “I told you, he has the flu, he’s totally out of it, man. Party’s off this year. Hey, did you get our Christmas card?”
“What? Oh. Yeah,” Newt sighs. He tacked it up on his fridge: the two women with their arms around each other, one pink-haired, one blue-haired, holding up their cat in the middle like it was their son or something. Clever. Quirky. Newt just makes a generic Tweet mid-December wishing everyone a happy holiday season and calls it a success—less effort. “Yeah, it was cute. It’s definitely cancelled? He can’t just, I don’t know, take some Advil or something and—”
“Newt,” she says.
“Yeah, okay, fine,” Newt says. “Tell Jackie to tell him to—get well soon? Soon enough for New Year’s, maybe? Because it would be great if—”
She hangs up on him. Newt probably deserved it.
He stalks Jackie’s brother’s Facebook for a bit after the phone call to make sure he’s not just lying about the flu to get out of inviting Newt to the holiday bash he’s definitely having. It becomes clear pretty quick it’s pretty legit—he’s made exactly one post in the last few days, and it’s a selfie of him looking absolutely horrid in his bed, advising everyone to not be like him and get their flu shots. Not lying, then. Damn it. There’s not even going to be anything for Newt to crash.
“Damn it,” Newt groans, and slams his laptop shut.
In all honesty, Newt’s not pissed about missing the party itself. He’s pissed about missing the party guests. How else is he going to have his annual spat at the snack table with his mortal enemy, Dr. Bitchy, British, Badly-Dressed Gottlieb?
Mortal enemy is too strong. Rival, maybe? Though certainly not a friendly one. He’s fond of Dr. Gottlieb, really, in some insane, backwards kinda way, like he’s a specimen Newt would love nothing more than to cram under a microscope and study up close. What makes him tick? What makes him scowl like that, yell at Newt—more or less a stranger—like that, attend the same party year after year like that only to stand in the darkest corner like a vampire and avoid every single other person? The first time they met was at the party three years ago, when Dr. Gottlieb loudly accused Newt of deliberately snagging the last cucumber finger sandwich because he somehow knew Dr. Gottlieb was eyeing it up, too, and only did it to annoy him, and it’s only gone downhill from there. Or maybe uphill. He fascinates Newt.
He’s also insanely attractive to Newt. Bitchy, British, Badly-Dressed, but, my God, what a set of cheekbones, what a set of eyes, what a big ‘ole mouth that Newt can only assume would be awesome for kissing. And only a few inches of height on Newt, too; he wouldn’t even need to stretch up that far to test out his hypothesis.
Since Newt has Facebook open, he does another search for Dr. Gottlieb—Dr. Hermann Gottlieb, technically, though he’s furious whenever Newt tries to call him anything other than his full title. If Newt was normal, he’d just shoot the guy a friend request or something. A simple message. He just stalks his page instead, which makes him feel the sting of the cancelled party even more keenly: Dr. Gottlieb doesn’t post, like, any pictures of himself, but the ones he’s been tagged in by his company and someone who appears to be his brother make it very clear very fast that he kinda just got even hotter over the year. He’s started wearing his oversized glasses on a librarian chain, and his haircut—which had always been a severe sort of undercut—has grown out up top to be adorably poofy. Tragic.
He shoots his ex-drummer a text later. Can you ask Jackie to ask about that Gottlieb guy that’s there every year? Like, what’s his deal?
The reply comes later, while Newt is reheating some leftover Chinese takeout for dinner. they’re friends w gottlieb’s younger bro. mostly invite him to be nice.
“Figures,” Newt mutters.
Well, if there won’t be a party at which to have their annual run-in, Newt is simply going to have to orchestrate a run-in himself. The first step is finding out where Gottlieb works.
Newt picks a miserable day to set his plan into action. A snowstorm swept through the city a few days prior, and before the sidewalks were even finished dethawing, a sleet storm followed and turned them into eighty-percent sheets of ice. And then more snow comes. Newt slips and slides all the way to the cafe across from Gottlieb’s humble little robotics research facility, cursing himself for not having invested in proper winter boots yet. Docs are practical and cool, but they could be warmer, and Newt’s are so old the treads are basically nonexistent. He orders himself the most expensive coffee on the menu as a reward for his troubles and claims a chair near the large shop window in front, underneath a hanging fern. He would simply wait and watch for Gottlieb to walk out. The man had to walk out eventually. Lunch break, or coffee break, or even just clocking out for the day. He had to.
“Would you like to see our sandwich menu, sir?” a waitress asks Newt. “We have a new—"
“Nah, no thanks,” Newt says. He doesn’t tear his eyes away from the window. “You don’t have to call me sir, by the way. It makes me feel old. Does a Dr. Gottlieb ever come here?”
The waitress snorts involuntarily; she flushes a second later. “Sorry,” she says. “It’s just that—yes, Dr. Gottlieb comes in a lot, and he’s kind of…”
“Awful?” Newt grins.
“Particular,” the waitress says. “He has us remake his coffee if it’s not perfect enough for him. And we have to write out the whole thing, Dr. Gottlieb, on his cup, every time. He tips really well, though, so we don’t really mind.”
“Has he come in today yet?” Newt says.
She opens her mouth as if to answer the question, but then furrows her eyebrows. “Why do you want to know, anyway? Are you guys friends?”
“Not really,” Newt says. Deciding it’s not worth the effort to explain the complex homoeroticism of his dynamic with Gottlieb, and to random waitress who probably doesn’t give a shit at that, he amends “I mean, yes. Good friends. I’ll see that sandwich menu, actually.”
Newt has a nice breakfast of avocado and egg on a bagel, and pretends to do work on his laptop for a few hours, but—to his disappointment—Dr. Gottlieb doesn’t come in for a coffee. Newt doesn’t catch sight of any familiar dark-haired, scowling men walking in or out of the institute, either. Gottlieb must have off today. Maybe it’s for the best, anyway; Newt’s not totally sure what he would’ve done if he ran into the guy on the street, or how he would have even explained why he’s there to Gottlieb if he did. He was just sort of operating under the assumption he’d figure it out in the heat of the moment. He calls it quits around three in the afternoon, not wanting to walk home in the dark after sunset. “Happy holidays,” he tells the baristas gloomily, and steps out into the snow with one last cardboard cup of coffee.
He mulls it all over in his head as he avoids ice patches and passersby on the way home. Should he ask for Dr. Gottlieb’s number? Is it weird to ask your ex, or even his sister, for the number of a guy you’re sorta-interested in? Newt supposes it’s weird to invite your ex to a holiday party in the first place, but he really wasn’t lying about it being amicable. Maybe he wouldn’t care. He could always just send that fucking Facebook friend request. Or he could just wait until next year. It’s just a year.
He’s so distracted that he doesn’t notice the patch of ice directly in front of his apartment until he’s already stepping on it, and his stomach flips in a way that lets Newt knows he’s just fucked up; his worn-out boot loses traction, his arms pinwheel, his coffee goes flying, and he lands—
In someone’s arms?
Well, even that’s not totally right. He lands mostly in someone’s arms, but he hears a little oof, an exclamation of surprise, and then they both topple over and into a snowbank. The coffee lands somewhere next to Newt’s head. “Bugger,” a familiar voice groans.
Newt sits up. Dr. Gottlieb is laying on his back next to him, wrapped in a green parka and about three scarves. To Newt’s relief, he doesn’t look angry. More embarrassed than anything else. “Apologies,” he says. “You were heavier than I’d anticipated. Or perhaps I was not as strong as I anticipated.”
“I appreciate it anyway, dude,” Newt says.
He gets to his feet, locates Gottlieb’s cane from where it’s somehow landed on the other side of the sidewalk, then tugs Gottlieb to his feet as well. Gottlieb makes a face as he rights himself. “You ought to watch yourself, and be more careful,” he says. “You could break your neck next time.”
“Worried about me?” Newt says. He dusts some snow off Gottlieb’s shoulders. “What are you doing outside my apartment, dude?”
“Er,” Gottlieb says.
He goes a strange shade of pink, and clears his throat. “I fancied…a walk. In the snow. Fresh air. And I just happened to be—er—” He clears his throat again. “I happened to discover you lived here, and my walk happened to take me by. I wasn’t looking for you, if that’s what you’re implying. Or waiting for you. I have better things to do with myself.”
“Really?” Newt says. “’Cause I was looking for you.”
“Oh,” Gottlieb says.
He really is cute right now, with his red-tipped ears, his dumb coat, his dumb scarves, the snow sticking to his back and his poofy hair. Sticking to his long eyelashes. It’s the first time Newt’s ever seen the guy not, like, at least mildly annoyed at him; it’s doing something funny to his heart. “Hey, you wanna come in for a coffee or something?” he says. “Mine kinda spilled, and I could go for another.”
“I couldn’t possibly,” Gottlieb says.
Newt grins. “Come on, I know you want to. It’s cold as shit out and you’ve clearly been out here for a while. We can order a pizza or something, too.”
“Well,” Gottlieb says, and he ducks his head as he finally smiles back. It’s worth the wait, because my God, is it cute, all broad and crooked. Newt has the feeling not too many people get to witness it. “Perhaps for a bit. I was hoping to discuss your latest article with you, you know, and was very put out when I learned I wouldn’t be seeing you at the party this year.”
“Oh?” Newt says. He holds out his hand, and Gottlieb startles visibly a moment before taking it. Newt can feel how cold Gottlieb is even through his thick red mitten—he could use a little warming up. Newt can light a fire in the fireplace he rarely uses…maybe break out some wine…it’ll be nice and romantic… “Did you like it?”
“Not in the slightest,” Gottlieb says cheerily.
“Just what I was hoping,” Newt says. “After you, Doctor.”

This is for @glorioustiel because they kindly referred me to the prompt in this post  about meteorologist!dean and cameraman!cas when I was going crazy with the need to write. It’s the first non-canon verse fic I’ve written, so it was v fun to try something different! Thank you, and I hope I did the prompt justice (:
There’s one good thing about his job.
Dean’s reluctant to admit it; he could try to idealize the storm chasing, the snow watching, or the sunset catching, but in his experience, there are more striking things. Striking like lightning and a match in the cold both at the same time.
They’re the bluest eyes he’s ever seen.
Dean would be able to find them in the direst of weather, in storms and sleet and snow, and today is no exception.
It’s a snowstorm for the history books, and Dean... would know. Sometimes he wonders how four years of formal education have led him to a point where he can name the exact number of inches of snow needed to set a record as he stands outside feeling his eyelashes freeze. He thinks it’s probably better not to get too existential.
This is stupid.
This is so, so freaking stupid.
He’s standing in the middle of a blizzard telling a camera that it’s snowing, and Dean isn’t the most efficient guy, but this has to be the most counterproductive experience he’s ever wasted time on. He feels like he’s yelling to Noah’s arc, “Oh, by the way, it’s raining.”
It’s not all bad, though.
That’s where the eyes come in: the ones he can see through the most adverse of circumstances. No matter the weather, they always seem warm.
“Aaaaand that concludes our Lebanon weather report. Stay tuned for school closings.”
The camera shuts off, and Dean is immediately complaining.
“I hope it was worth the frost bite. Making me stand outside,” he grumbles, “Gotta have labor laws against it.”
A laugh crackles from the cold behind the camera, and Dean feels his face tug into a smile.
“What’re you laughing at? Is it the parka?” Dean demands good-naturedly.
“It wasn’t,” the cameraman begins, “but now that you mention it...”
“I don’t wanna hear it, Cas,” Dean shoots back in a voice that says otherwise. “Anyways, it’s not like you’re ready for New York fashion week.”
Cas looks down at his almost identical, comically large coat. “We can look stupid together, then,” Cas says with enough sincerity that it warms Dean up from the inside out.
“Let’s do it from the van, though.”
Cas agrees readily, and as soon as they can move the equipment, they sit shoulder to shoulder in the back of a van that reads, “Kansas WeatherWonder” in bright yellow writing. Their feet dangle out the back from where they are huddled in the trunk. A thermos of hot coffee rests between their legs, and Dean grabs it greedily.
“Pretty damn cold today, huh,” Dean says between gulps.
Cas’s expression is suspiciously serene. “I don’t mind it so much.”
“Yeah?” and just to get a rise out of him, Dean adds, “Because you’re from Canada?”
“I’m not—“ Cas tries to protest, but they’ve been here before. “I truly don’t understand why you’re always calling me Canadian.”
Dean shrugs. “Too polite, I guess. And freakishly tough against the cold.”
Something that Dean said emboldens Cas, and he leans closer as he speaks.
“So...you think I’m tough?”
Dean chokes on coffee.
The comment is quickly forgotten as Cas claps him on the back in a futile attempt to help.
When Dean finishes his coughing fit, he offers Cas the thermos, which he gratefully accepts.
“We could probably head back soon. I can’t see them sending us back out once they see the state you’re in.” Cas gestured at the ice crystallized on Dean’s eyelashes.
Dean looks indignant. “Me? Look at you! You... your lips are turning blue.”
Dean isn’t sure why that’s the first retort that comes to mind, but Cas presses his lips together subconsciously. Dean tries not to watch too closely.
“You were just saying that I’m impervious to the cold.”
“Well, I know I didn’t say ‘impervious,’” Dean grumbles, but he has to fight back a smile as he says it.
“Right... I believe your word was ‘tough,’” Cas shoots back.
Dean almost laughs at the use of air quotes. He restrains himself from laughing audibly, but he’s sure that his smile is damningly fond.
When Cas shivers beside him, Dean is ready to call his bluff.
“Not so tough, now, are you?”
Cas smiles, looking almost bashful. He huddles closer.
It catches Dean off guard, but he’s cold, too, and he doesn’t lean away. When Cas smiles back at Dean, Dean responds by stealing back the thermos.
“Hey! Now my hands are cold,” Cas complains, but there’s not much conviction in it.
“Oh, yeah, my bad,” Deans responds in a voice that drips with sarcasm. “If your hands are that delicate, then I’ll give it back.”
Cas narrows his eyes. “Your hands must be cold, too.”
Dean wants to deny it, but he thinks the shiver that racks his body gives him away.
Cas makes a face like he’s steeling himself for something, and then his hands are covering Dean’s.
“What’s that for?” Dean asks, hoping that Cas knows he doesn’t mean for him to take his hands away.
“Keeping both our hands warm,” Cas says happily.
Dean lets the statement hang in the air for a moment, and when he responds, it’s softer than he intended, less sarcastic.
“Well, thanks then.”
It actually works. Dean isn’t sure if it just distracted him from the cold or if Cas’s body heat is actually keeping him warm, but it helps.
They sit contentedly until Cas decides to lift the thermos. Dean means to drop his hands, to bring them back to his side, but his fingers protest the cold. When Cas brings the thermos to his lips, Dean’s thumb skims his cheek. Dean isn’t sure if Cas shivers from the cold or from the touch.
Dean doesn’t remember making the decision to let go of the coffee, but in the next moment, they’ve thrown it somewhere in the back of the van, hoping the top is on tight enough but not really caring.
Their parkas make a comical swishing sound as they brush against each other, but Dean barely notices.
Dean can feel the warmth of Cas’s breath swirling like smoke in the cold air. When Cas’s hands had left the coffee, he’d replaced one on Dean’s chest and the other on his shoulder, both gentle and solid. Dean’s hands find Cas’s hair, the nape of his neck. Dean thinks he feels heat radiating off of the bare skin.
There’s another breath that condenses in the air between them, but in the next moment, there’s no space for either of them to breathe.
When they kiss, it’s a soft thing at first, full of wonder and waiting. Then Dean’s fingers catch in Cas’s hair, and there is a sharp exhale before the kiss turns crushing.
Around them, snowflakes swirl downwards.
When they finally pull away, Dean notices the blanket of white that has covered everything around them, and for the first snow of the season, he can’t think of anything more impressive. When he looks at the way the flakes have settled, he can’t help but think that they’ve always belonged there.

Hi! I was wondering, which Kaito song and Kaito module are your favorite?
I don't exactly have 1 all time favourite of either, but some of my favourite songs featuring him include Midnight Icarus, TONDEMO-WONDERZ, Mikaboshi, Ashes to Ashes, Thousand Year Solo, Reload Words, and of course the Logic System cover of Ano Subarashii Ai wo Mou Ichido. There's probably some I'm forgetting tbh.
I made a list of some of my favourite modules a few weeks ago, but to sum it up aside from his v1 + v3 standards some of my favourites are Bashful Parka Blue, Diamond Dust, Requiem, and (this is very apparent if you look at the project diva tag on here) Cyber Cat.
