In cooperation with the Jane Goodall Institute, in 2022 Mattel created a four-doll set they called the Eco Leadership Team.
Tumblr media
The dolls were made of recycled plastic* (much like the Jane Goodall Inspiring Women doll) and represented a Renewable Energy Engineer, a Conservation Scientist, a Chief Sustainability Officer, and an Environmental Advocate.
Tumblr media
Oh yes, Mattel has produced a Barbie who is canonically a protestor.
There is a lot to like about this dollset: Mattel is representing women in STEM fields, Mattel is making an effort to produce more sustainable Barbies, and Mattel is actively encouraging their target audience to take an active interest in creating positive change in their community.
On the other hand...
Remember that asterisk above?
That should read *Hair and face excluded. Those parts were not recycled. And although this set is a certified carbon neutral product, per the back of the box, most Barbies are not.
Tumblr media
I am not questioning that I think it was right for Mattel to produce this product and I think it's great in many ways, but I think perhaps Mattel as a corporation could be doing a little more.

Jane Goodall, a British primatologist, now has a Barbie that looks like her, granting her a lifelong desire to empower young girls through having her own doll.
As part of its Inspiring Women Series, Mattel Inc. revealed the new Barbie, which the toymaker claims is made from recycled plastic, paying homage to Goodall's landmark chimpanzee studies and conservation efforts.
A replica of David Greybeard, the first chimpanzee to trust primatologist Jane Goodall when she did study at Gombe National Park in what is now Tanzania in east Africa, sits by Goodall's side. She is clutching a notebook and wearing a khaki shirt and shorts.
"I wanted a doll to be me even before this idea came up. I've seen...little girls playing with Barbie dolls and certainly at the beginning, they were all very girly girly and I thought little girls need...some choice," said Goodall.
"Mattel has changed its range of dolls and there's all kinds of astronauts and doctors and things like that. So many children learn about me at school. They'll be thrilled to have the Barbie doll."
Goodall, 88, started her studies in east Africa in 1960, when she saw chimpanzees exhibit compassion, manufacture tools, hunt and consume meat, among other characteristics.
"When I got to Gombe, it was beautiful, my dream had come true," she said. "But for four months the chimps ran away from me...so although the forest was wonderful, I couldn't enjoy it until this David Greybeard lost his fear and helped the others to lose their fear too."
To assist teach kids about their environmental impact, Mattel announced it would also collaborate with the Jane Goodall Institute and its youth service initiative Roots & Shoots.
"I see us at the mouth of a very long, very dark tunnel with a little shining star at the end and it's no good sitting at the mouth of the tunnel and saying 'Oh, I hope that star comes to us.' Hope is about action," Goodall said.
"We... work around all these obstacles between us and the star, which is climate change, loss of biodiversity, poverty, unsustainable lifestyles, pollution, you name it. And as we go along the tunnel, we reach out to others because there are people working on each one of these problems but so often they're working in silos."

"British primatologist Jane Goodall has got a Barbie in her likeness, fulfilling a longtime wish of having her own doll to inspire young girls.
Mattel Inc unveiled the new Barbie, which the toymaker says is made from recycled plastic, as part of its Inspiring Women Series, nodding to Goodall's groundbreaking studies of chimpanzees and conservation efforts.
Dressed in a khaki shirt and shorts and holding a notebook, Goodall's doll has a pair of binoculars around her neck and David Greybeard by her side, a replica of the first chimpanzee to trust the primatologist as she conducted her research at Gombe National Park, in what is now Tanzania in east Africa.
"I wanted a doll to be me even before this idea came up. I've seen...little girls playing with Barbie dolls and certainly at the beginning, they were all very girly girly and I thought little girls need...some choice," Goodall told Reuters."

Después de dedicar su vida profesional al estudio de los chimpancés en su hábitat natural, la Dra. Jane Goodall ahora tiene una Barbie que la representa. Un gran modelo a seguir para las nuevas generaciones de futuras científicas.

Barbie launches Jane Goodall doll as part of Mattel’s Inspiring Women series
The doll is part of the Barbie Inspiring Women series, which “pays tribute to incredible heroines of their time; courageous women who took risks, changed rules and paved the way for generations of girls to dream bigger than ever before. “ Mattel says: “Recognizing decades of dedication, ground-breaking research, and heroic achievements as a conservationist, animal behaviour expert, and activist,…

I unboxed 17 dolls today! 😥 they've accumulated over 2 years and my new adhd meds finally work

Man, comparing the 90s barbies with the Jane Goodall one makes me want to cry 😭 the quality drop is so severe! The older dolls have different textures and thicknesses of fabric, and all these wonderful details like the pearls and metal pieces. There's still a quality drop for the Ida Wells dolls, but at least her dress is a decent fabric and has some trim, and 11 points of articulation as compared to 5

April 22 is Earth Day, an annual international observance to promote environmental protection, having run since 1970. 2024's theme specifically is "Planet vs Plastics".
Which brings us to Barbie.
There is no doubt that Mattel is aware of the issues of environmental protection, climate change and the impact of plastics on the environment. The 2022 Barbie "Career of the Year" was Eco-Leadership.
Tumblr media
These dolls were advertised as being made from recycled plastic (with the fine print noting that this is true only of the bodies, not the heads or hair) and featured Barbie in various eco-themed careers (including what Mattel describes as an "advocate" but to me looks like a "protester").
The dolls are made of "certified CarbonNeutral products", as are some other Barbie products especially those themed around the environment, such as the Jane Goodall Inspiring Women Barbie (also described as being made from 75% recycled plastic, excluding the head, hair and chimpanzee... which you may recognise as being a pretty significant portion of what is available in this release).
Tumblr media
In 2021, Mattel updated their website with a page on sustainability, featuring the tagline "The future of pink is green" and promising that they were "working towards a goal of achieving 100% recycled, recyclable, or bio-based plastic materials in our products and packaging." This page also provides links to a number of dolls in their line they are advertising as being made of recycled products, such as "Barbie Loves the Ocean".
Tumblr media
They promise "more" coming in 2024, but ultimately I don't know if Mattel is really doing all that they can. I recognise that Barbie is a capitalist product i.e. a toy, a toy designed to be sold in as many numbers as possible, made of plastic and packaged in plastic. But if Mattel wants to make sustainability a cornerstone of their brand (which to be clear, I applaud), I wish we were seeing more.

Barbie honors Dr Jane Goodall with it’s doll in her likeness just ahead of World Chimpanzee Day, which will be observed on Thursday, July 14. It also coincides with the 62nd anniversary of Goodall’s first trip to Tanzania’s Gombe National Park, where she conducted her pioneering research on chimpanzees.
I say...it’s about DAMN TIME too! 🥰
