Film Review: Broker (2022)

Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda

I’ve been wanting to watch this movie because of IU (I’m a big fan— uaena here!).

This film definitely made it to my top-tier list. Everything was beautifully executed— the story line, the visuals (the visuals are so good), the characters’ stories and what makes them who they are and how circumstances drives them to make such decisions, down to the tiny details and conversations. Hirokazu Koreeda’s Broker is a beautiful film.

I wouldn’t say the film was slow or fast paced. It was just the right amount of everything. The detours that the group had while searching for a buyer didn’t made the film boring at all.

The scene that I liked the most was Lee Ji-eun telling them “태어나줘서 고마워” (Thank you for being born). The fact that Dong-Soo (Gang Dong-Won) and Hae-Jin (Lim Seung-Soo) didn’t have a mother to thank them for being born and hearing it from the mother of the baby they were trying to sell was emotional enough. It made me sad. It was an intimate moment and it made me fall in love with the film.

Bae Doona’s character (Soo-Jin) also adds to the film’s goal of selling the baby. I read a review that her character was the most desperate one to sell the baby in order to catch Sang-Hyun (Song Kang-Ho) in the act and put him behind bars. I do empathize on Soo-Jin’s hatred to mothers who abandon their babies and her lack of empathy towards So-Young (Lee Ji-Eun) and the baby are understandable as it’s the reason why she’s tailing the brokers in the first place. But I’d like to know more as to where that hatred is coming from.

I think the character with the least impact on the film was Detective Lee (Lee Joo-Young). I loved her in Itaewon Class, but in this film there was not really much to say about her character except to question Soo-Jin’s way of thinking.

In the end, it made me question why a baby box is legal but abortion is not. I do understand its purpose but if I start to question all the whys, it will be a battle of one’s conscience between what is right and wrong. And Broker raised this question, but not as much as (it had)— at least in my opinion to move people and question their philosophy in life.

This is my first time watching one of Koreeda’s works. I’ll definitely keep tabs of his other films. I heard it was also good. I would say, though Broker doesn’t surpass the best films out there, it is definitely worth watching.

Rookie-Critic's Top 25 Films of 2022: Honorable Mentions - Broker (dir. Hirokazu Kore-eda)

If you've seen Hirokazu Kore-eda's 2018 film Shoplifters, the themes of found family and unconventional relationships explored in Broker won't be anything new. What Broker does boast, however, is a story that, in its own way separate from Shoplifters, is profoundly beautiful. The characters and overarching trajectory of the plot in Broker is slightly more straightforward in its positive message and uplifting spirit than Shoplifters was, and, of course, it's yet another great acting showcase for Korean powerhouse Song Kang-ho. It's also an incredible acting showcase for K-pop star Lee Ji-eun, who is probably better known by her stage name IU. I hope Broker is a launchpad to seeing her in more stuff, because she is wildly impressive in this.

Orta çağ Kore’sinde geçen zombi dizisi olmaz demeyin. Kim Eun-Hee ve Yang Kyung-Il 'nın 2014 yılında yazdığı “Land of the God" adlı webtoon’dan uyarlayıp ekrana getirmişler. Tarihi bir dönem dizisi olmasının yanı sıra vahşet, yozlaşma, siyaset ve "salgın hastalık" gibi konuları bir araya getiriyor. Dizi; ölen annesi cariye olduğu için dışlanmış bir veliaht prens, veliaht prensten küçük bir yeni kraliçe ve ölü bir kral ile başlıyor.

Çiçek hastalığına yakalanan kral, çok uzun süre dayanamıyor ve hastalığa yenik düşüp ölüyor. Hamile kraliçe, babası olan devlet baş konsey üyesiyle kralın öldüğünü herkesten gizliyor, Kralı görmek için ısrar eden Veliaht prensi hain ilan ederek saraydan sürüyorlar. Bebek doğana kadar tahtı kral yönetiyormuş gibi gösterip, bebeği tahta oturtmayı amaçlıyorlar. Veliaht prens ise gizlice girdiği kralın odasında babası yerine bir canavar ile karşılaşıyor. Kralın yanında en son bulunan hekimin yerini öğrendikten sonra yardımcısı ile gizlice saraydan çıkıp hekimi bulmak için yola düşüyor.

Veliahttın aradığı hekim ise, kralın üzerinde diriliş çiçeği uygulamıştır. Bu uygulama sonucu kral dirilmiş dirilmesine ama bir canavara dönüşmüştür. Bizim anlayacağımız şekilde, zombi olmuş. Odasında rahatsız olduğu için dinlendiğini söyleyip, kralı zincirlerler. Ama bir kaza sonucu hizmetçilerden birine saldırır. Hizmetçiyi köyüne götürüp gömmeleri için teslim ederler. Şimdi bunu bu kısımda neden yaptıklarına dair hiçbir fikrimiz yok. Kralın ısırdığı kişiler zombide olmuyor, orada da bir sorun yok.

Bu sırada saray halkı normal bir hayat sürerken, dışarıda insanlar açlıktan kırılmaktadır. Saray dışındaki halk bir lokma ekmek bulamaz ve avlanması da yasaktır. Köydeki bir sivri zeka çıkıp getirdikleri zombi didiklemiş cesetten çorba yapıyor. Ve açlıktan ölmek üzere olan küçük yerleşkedeki herkese yediriyor. Ne hikmetse kendisi yemiyor. Bununda nedenini bilmiyoruz. Hekimin yardımcısı da koşturmaktan yemeğe fırsat bulamıyor. O kadar açken nasıl bulamıyor bilmiyoruz. Akşamına bu ikisi hariç bütün köy zombi olarak uyanmasın mı! Bunca senedir zombi dizisi izlerim. İlk defa bir zombi salgını, zombiler insanı ısırdığı için değil, insanlar zombiyi yediği için patlak verdi.

Dizinin prodüksiyonu şahane, sinematografisine söyleyecek laf yok. Hele o zombiyi oynayan Koreliler aman Allah’ım! adete zombi rolü yapmak için doğmuşlar. Ama NEDEN! bir kraliçe doğmamış çocuğum tahta geçecek diye bütün ülkeyi zombi etti. Senaryosu çok iyi olup kötü çekilen dizi izledim ama konusu bu kadar kötü başka diziye rastlamamıştım. Adeta dizide her şey ters hissiyatta ilerliyor. Spoiler verecek bir şey yok zaten ama olanı da vermeyeyim diye detaya girmiyorum.

Dizi reytingleri, diziye yapılan yorumlar ve tepkiler inanılmaz. Ben bir şeyleri kaçırdığımı düşünmeden edemiyorum. Kendi adıma ben diziden hiç keyif almadım. Alamadım. Oyuncular arasında 2 kişiyi daha önce izlemiştim. Neredeyse tanıdık yüz yoktu. Bae Doo-Na daha önce Sense8 de oynamıştı. Oradan tanıyorum. Dizi de de sanırım en aklı başındaki karakter olabilir. Birkaç sahnede koca ülkede bir kişinin mi kafası çalışıyor diye sorguladım. Birde Jun Suk-Ho’u bir çok dizide yan rollerde izlemiştim. Buradaki karakteri beni çok eğlendirdi. Çirkin şansı mı diyeyim, şeytan tüyü mü diyeyim bilmiyorum.

Konuya dönecek olursam, 6+6 toplam 12 bölümden oluşan 2 sezonluk bir diziydi. Sonrasında 1saat 40 dk lık devam filmi çekilmiş. 3. Sezon içinde anlaşma yapılmış. Hala aklım almıyor, o ayrı. Kraliçe rolündeki Kim Hye-Jun, tam dayaklıktı. Bu arada bence birçok şey mantıksızdı. Nedenini açıklamadıkları çok fazla açık bıraktılar. Zombilerin nasıl bir menzili var, ne kadar uzaktan gelebiliyorlar. Kokumu alıyorlar, sese mi duyarlılar? All of us are dead dizisindeki zombiler ile baya bir benzerlik taşıyorlardı. İkisi de ısırıp bırakıyordu. Hiçbir mantığı olmayan davranışlar. Koşa koşa gelip bir diş alıyorlar. Zombi olma mantığını enteresan bir matematiğe oturttular. Yaptıkları o açıklamayı beğendim.

İki sezon dizi ve bir film bitirdim. En başta o Young-Shin (Kim Sung-Kyu) neden cesetten çorba yaptı, neden kendisi içmedi çözemedim. Filme gelirsek; diziden bağımsız yorumlamak lazım. Kesinlikle dizideki anlamsız sahne çekimleri yoktu. Tutarlı, kararlı ve düz bir hikayeydi. Filmini beğendim. 3.sezon bu çizgide gelecekse izlenir. Aksi takdirde hiç alakası olmadığı halde zombinin önüne atlayıp sonra da ondan kaçmaya çalıştıkları sahneler doğallıktan çok uzaktı.

Toparlarsak; görsellik, oyunculuk, prodüksiyon, çekimler çok başarılıydı. Senaryo ve hikaye kurgusu bence çok başarısızdı. Tavsiye eder miyim, asla etmem. O kadar başarılı dizi varken bunu tavsiye edemem.

Broker (2022, dir. Hirokazu Kore-eda) - review by Rookie-Critic

Broker is an absolutely beautiful film that touches on both the failings of the adoption system in South Korea (which seem relatively close to how they work here in the States, as well, but I'm not an expert so don't quote me on that) and, much like Kore-eda's previous film Shoplifters, the benefits of found family. Kore-eda is seen deeply set in his comfort zone here, and it's a little hard not to hear the synopsis or watch the trailer and think, "So it's Shoplifters, just this time with Song Kang-ho." After having seen the film, I can say that there are parts of me that still feels that way about it, but Broker has a lot going for it on its own merit to call it its own original, distinctive film. For one, and I wasn't sure this was possible, Broker almost seems even more sentimental than Shoplifters was, which is a pretty tall order all on its own. However, the movie never allows that sentimentality to tip the scales towards sappiness; leaving some of the more cynical characters to drag things back into balance. The acting is also great across the board. It's no surprise to anyone at this point that, if Song Kang-ho is in something, he's brilliant in said thing. That man is an acting force to be reckoned with, and I think one of the film's biggest strengths is that, in spite of this fact, the ensemble doesn't suffer. They all rise up to meet Song's level. I'd specifically like to give props to Lee Ji-eun (who is traditionally a singer, probably better known by her stage name, IU), who gives an outstanding breakout performance to the point where, for most of the movie, your attention is focused on her and not Song. I know that it's kind of just a part of the K-pop idol trajectory to eventually start acting, but that doesn't always mean that the idol in question is successful, or very likely even good at it. However, IU is without a doubt amazingly talented, and gives a performance that is both understated when it needs to be and big when the moment calls for it. Really, everyone just blends so well together and it sells the found family message super well.

If I had a complaint about Broker, and I do, it's that Kore-eda has already made a brilliant movie about found family and the failings of the system, the previously mentioned Shoplifters, and, in this reviewer's opinion, that film is overall better than this one. I found that I never connected with this group of characters in the same deep-rooted way that I did with the family from Shoplifters, and while that movie may have had a slightly less altruistically "happy" ending, it felt maybe just a bit more impactful. That being said, I can't knock Broker hardly at all for that, as there are probably a lot of people whose first of these two films will most likely be this one, due to both Song Kang-ho and IU's presence in it, and I think that Broker is great enough on its own to (mostly) stand up to the comparison, and will likely have fans that do make just as much of a connection, if not more of one, to this group.

Score: 9/10
