The Bad Batch, Season 2 Episode 12: Outpost (Spoilers):

This episode was phenomenal. I couldn’t watch it on release day, so I watched it today… I’m currently in the Starbucks car park, rocking back and forth in my car, crying like a newborn.

I know Crosshair saw himself in Mayday which makes this episode more emotional and gives more complexity to Crosshair’s character. We get to see this arrogant and stubborn man learn. We get to witness the shift from just being a good soldier to a humanitarian soldier. I’m at the edge of my seat to see the next episodes starring this favorite clone of mine.

And the irritation headache after the explosion? Interesting for a clone “without” his inhibitor chip.

I’ve put my thoughts concisely here, but I could go on for a few hours. I really am happy with this episode.

Episode 12 open discussion under the cut 👇🏼 BEWARE SPOILERS.

The loss of Crosshair’s helmet is so significant. The fact that he didn’t even bother to look for it, even more so.

The animators have always used helmets to represent a dichotomy. Pre Order-66, it was a symbol of a soldier’s individualism, as most troopers opted to paint their helmet to their liking; something to make them easily distinguishable from their brothers. Post Order-66, helmet-wear was used to signify the loss of a soldier’s autonomy. Yes, obviously for cranial protection as well (keep the melon safe during battle, you know), but once Order 66 was issued, aside from Batch members, seeing a clone trooper without their helmet on was a very rare sight.

In Season 1 Episode 1, Crosshair opted to keep his helmet on during the flight back to Kamino after Order-66 on Kaller, and through the halls of Tipoca city until they reached their barracks. I think the writers and animators were trying to symbolize that he had lost a large portion of his control.

Through the rest of the first season, Crosshair was largely hidden behind his new imperial helmet; one that was completely lacking resemblance or connection to his past as a member of CF-99. I think his Imp helmet was something that, at least in the beginning, he wore proudly; it was a symbol of his new role, his new rank, his future, his new ideology.

But in The Solitary Clone (S2 E3), after a poignant discussion with Cody, we see Crosshair look at his helmet with implied contempt, regret, and even possibly, repulsion. This was new.

In the first minutes of Season 2 Episode 12, we see him reprimanded by an imperial superior officer for not wearing it, which I found interesting. Keep in mind, Crosshair was also helmet-less when he met with Cody before their mission to Desix. Same scenario: waiting by the ship for a debrief from his commander before leaving for the mission. But this time, the writers opted to emphasize that his face was exposed.

Now, his helmet is completely gone. In a mission gone sour, it was eaten by an avalanche. And I found it very interesting that Crosshair’s first thought after emerging from the snow, was to find and save Mayday, a reg commander who he’d met only hours previously, and who took all of Crosshair’s imperial ideology and challenged it. He carefully puts Mayday’s helmet back on him, but doesn’t even spare a thought for his own.

In the final minutes of E12, we see Crosshair, and his face in all its glory, shoot his Lieutenant. An angry murder noodle move, yes... but also a desperate, frustrated one.

The presence of Imperial Crosshair feels diminished. The reemergence of Bad Batch Crosshair feels imminent.

*pls note that I used the term “reg” to reference Crosshair’s previous intolerance for regular clones, and was not meant in any derogatory sense*

The Bad Batch episode yesterday was devastating, but there is something to hold on to. 

Mayday didn’t die alone. 

He was carried back to the outpost by a brother who refused to leave him behind. He died next to a brother who, even though he was in pain himself, fought to try to get him the medical treatment he needed to save his life. He heard Crosshair demanding help. He died with someone trying to care for him. And I think that would have meant a lot to him.

⚠️ content warning: referring to season 2 episode 12: Outpost. hurt/comfort.

Eventually. Somehow. He escaped. Traveling alone. A renegade.

Stolen ship after stolen ship. Sometimes being a stowaway. His fingertips often go numb. An after effect from almost being frozen to death. Touching the scar on his head sends cringing shivers down his spine. He hates it.

Crosshair sinks down the wall of a transport ship that he snuck onto. In the cramped undercarriage of the ship, he can feel every tremor of turbulence. He hates it.

Tired amber eyes hide behind heavy eyelids. His breathing is deep. Full of restrained sorrow. He can feel it. He hates it.

Cracked, dry lips are haphazardly remedied with his tongue. It stings. He hates it.

Opening his eyes again and staring up at the creaking metal, it burns. Everywhere. Stomach, chest, throat, eyes. Everywhere.

The memories that weren’t supposed to be made play slowly in his mind. He killed the wrong people. He fought for the wrong side. He hunted and fired at the wrong team.

His fear. Being wrong. It sank its teeth into him. It left his skin torn, ripped apart, a mess. Unrecognizable. A silhouette of bones, frayed muscle, and ripped at veins. He is covered in his own blood, washing away the blood of others.

He hates himself.

Crosshair’s tears meet at his chin, dripping down and decorating his armor in wet splotches. Upturned eyebrows and trembling lips. He searches for a miracle. Either by the grace of his Maker or by the Force in the universe.

A thick swallow leaves him in a coughing fit. His hands hold his head as he heaves, barely trying to regain his strength. It hurts. He hates it. His heart is panicking behind his ribs. He fears it.

How does he begin to be himself again? Who was he before all this? He fears it.

In the midst of his haunting mind, the cargo ship lands at a docking port of an unknown planet. He never cared about the destination. He never stays long enough to, anyway.

Once the cargo was carried off and no one was left at the ramp of the ship, Crosshair snuck away. Roaming this city’s streets, searching for cheap food and a place to stay.

This downtown area was similar to that of the lower levels of Coruscant. Vibrant neon lights. Street vendors and booths. Sketchy characters slinking about in alleyways. It almost felt safe in an ironic funny way.

He turned a corner and found a food vendor that smelt the most appealing out of all the other junk that was being sold. It was meat that wasn’t drowned in grease. Something he could stomach longer.

Using almost the last of his credits, which were either pickpocketed or found, he walked away with his meal.

“Crosshair?”

The sniper looked at her and then behind her. He hates it. He fears it. Crosshair is stuck in place. Staring. Has his miracle been given? Could the universe grant it so soon?

His mouth opens to speak but he doesn’t get a chance to use his voice. Like a magnet, Hunter is embracing him. Strong arms are wrapped around Crosshair’s torso, one hand on the back of his head, keeping him still. The same hug when they were young. The hug that was meant to keep the hurt away.

There’s a hiccup in Crosshair’s breathing, his eyes looking at Tech and Wrecker. Wrecker is crying. So is Omega. Tech is staring back, his eyes almost as large as his goggles.

His meal is dropped, forgotten. Crosshair brings his arms to hug Hunter back. Amber eyes closing, letting his body rest in the arms of his brother.

“I’m sorry.”

“Shut up.”

Hate bound by fear will unwind.

So, I’ve been texting my dad (mostly) spoiler free summaries of The Bad Batch all season, each with a different theme (bad batch episodes as Disney park rides, bad batch episodes so far as out of context Wrecker lines, etc), and the last one was just me trying to make the episodes as mundane as possible. Which basically went like:

1. The Spoils of War: A questionable middle-manager tempts her employees with the sizeable performance bonus.

2. The Ruins of War: Mom horrified to learn that their daughter took him literally while their brother refuses to acknowledge a medical emergency.

3. The Solitary Clone: Depressed man who hates his job and never gets a lunch break is forced to deal with the woman who keeps ignoring all the “under new management” signs.

4. Faster: Gifted pilot reveals that he is no more responsible than either the man child or the literal child he was left to supervise.

5. Entombed: Child convinces her aunt to take her to a high tech corn maze; exhausted dad reluctantly tags along.

6. Tribe: Dad Squad steps in to help with a carpool.

7. The Clone Conspiracy: Career soldiers contemplate retirement.

8. Truth and Consequences: Wanted criminals break in to the world’s most dangerous Blockbuster to find a rare video.

9. The Crossing: Family goes spelunking in Space Moab.

10. Retrieval: Demolitions expert is so hangry he accidentally stumbled into a Dickens novel.

11. Metamorphosis: Four idiots go out of their way to prove that they have never seen a horror movie.

12. The Outpost: New transfer goes birdwatching in the snow.

13. Pabu: Broke ne’erdowells eat sushi.

14. Tipping Point: Responsible big brother teaches little sister how to drive the family car while one brother grabs dinner and the other has a doctor’s appointment.
