All of the lovely art credits go to @kinokoshoujoart, who also provided immense help with the themes/prompts and proofreading each one. Thank you so much!! I've loved our collab and am excited to share it with everyone!

Day One - Nami
“Hey, do you have some time?” she asked the busily working farmer.
Nami had spent most of the previous night tossing and turning before deciding she needed to do this. She didn’t want to do it alone, and you offered her support at every turn. Nami fought a sigh of relief as your head eagerly bobbed in confirmation. She was grateful for you filling the silence and distracting her nerves as Nami led you toward the city.
The Starry Night Market had grown since she came with her dad years ago. The booths spread from the mountain’s base like a patchwork quilt of brightly colored vendors. It could be its own little town. Nami was already regretting coming. The small, quiet Forget-Me-Not Valley was more her speed than the crowd. She thought that maybe such things weren’t always terrible, peeking over to see your excitement.
“I just wanted to get something nice for Tei, Lou, and Rock for welcoming me at the inn this year,” Nami mumbled as an excuse. If you thought anything of her thinly veiled lie to hide her feelings, Nami couldn’t see it. Instead, she focused on keeping her face passive as you grabbed her hand.
“So, we don’t get separated!” you beamed, following Nami’s lead. “They’ll be happy with anything you give them.”
She was doing her best to focus on finding gifts. Nami wanted to ensure she got the best possible thing for each member of her found family. Even if she would never openly call them that. A heartfelt gift would surely convey her words without needing to say them herself. Shopping would be easier if it weren’t for the press of people and the tempting cart that kept making rounds. The sweet potato vendor drew her gaze each time he appeared. Nami jerked her head away again to see you cradling a dog figurine.
“Are you getting that?”
“Nah, I don’t need it,” you blushed, setting the figure back down amongst its friends.
As she completed her final purchase, Nami realized you weren’t hovering at her shoulder. She quickly took advantage of the lapse to purchase the dog figurine and hide it with her other purchases. Her heart skipped a beat as she completed the sale and looked for you. Where could you have gone? Soft fabric encircled her neck as you reappeared, draping the scarf Nami eyed earlier around her neck. Nami bit into her cheek, trying to ignore the swell of joy. She would never have thought you would buy her a gift she couldn’t be bothered to get herself. Nami prepared to lecture you about walking off to hide her feelings.
“Sorry, I couldn’t wait until Starry Night. I’ve got you this too! You’ve been eyeing them all day. I want to see what the craze is all about,” you rapidly said, thrusting a foil-wrapped treat towards her.
Nami’s cool facade thawed to reveal her brilliant smile as she unwrapped the aluminum to reveal a piping hot sweet potato. This had been a really great day. Nami hoped she could spend more time with you like this in the future. She worried too much happiness like this would make it impossible to leave the valley, but maybe that wouldn’t be so bad. Nami could make a home there with you. She couldn’t wait for Starry Night to give you the gift she purchased for you.

Muffy and Nami sketches+ Jill/Pony (and me)
I'm not so attached to AWL characters because I've only seen them in DS Cute (only went for the FoMT characters or Skye and Leia though), but the second I saw the redesigns of these two I immediately fell in love with them lol
I don't think I'll make more AWL drawings, maybe just one or two more idk, but I do want to draw some more FoMT stuff if I have time, since I'm playing the remake again and all.

A Queer Study: AWL's Nami
Among the bachelorettes of the A Wonderful Life games, Nami easily sticks out the most: she has a more androgynous style compared to the other girls, is the least expressive, and is the hardest to romance--she doesn't like flowers and gems like the other girls do (with the exception of autumn's Trick Blue flowers). All of these things make it easy to headcanon Nami as LGBTQ in some fashion. Heck, I always write Nami in my fanfics as queer/genderqueer too! In my opinion, what supports this theory the most isn't Nami's appearance or behavior, but her direct dialogue with the player in A Wonderful Life. Character spoilers under the cut!
First, let's take a look at the final heart events of Celia, Muffy, and Lumina:
Tumblr media
Celia reveals that she turned down an arranged marriage to be with you.
Tumblr media
Muffy wants to make your relationship serious if you're going to take her on a date.
Tumblr media
Lumina is realizing her feelings for the player. And Nami...
Tumblr media
Nami doesn't want to go home. Note that there's a lack of the word marriage in 2/3 of the ways you can get engaged to her. You can offer her a place to live, or she can ask to live with you. But unless you give her the blue feather directly, there's no specification that you'll be getting married--just that she'll be living with you. This carries on to her betrayal cutscene too--if you propose to another girl after inviting Nami to live with you, Nami will show up on your farm to (sarcastically) congratulate you on your engagement and say that means she won't be living with you--understandable, but again, romance nor marriage in mentioned in this dialogue. Of course, this could just be Nami's personality, especially taking her other heart events into account--you have to approach Nami like a cat. If you're too pushy or friendly, she'll be repelled pretty easily. You have to let her interact on her own terms. What sticks out to me is that while the other girls make it a point to confess their love to you, Nami does not.
I was pretty young when I first played AWL; if I had gone in blind and invited Nami to live me before choosing a girl, I would've just thought "oh cool, I guess she'll be me and [Wife's] roommate then, everybody wins." Nope! It would've been quite a surprise for baby me to get to the second year and find out that I'm now married to Nami. Of course, I know that the older Harvest Moon games take place in a more old-fashioned time period. Several games lack a dating stage, so you're essentially going from love interests to engaged without much build up, like an old-timey courtship. Basically, it'd be fair to assume that the social expectation would be that a man and woman must be married, if they are to live together. That makes me wonder: would it be more accurate to say that the relationship between the player and Nami is more of a queer platonic or domestic partnership, rather than a romantic relationship? Takakura makes it pretty obvious from the start of the game that you're expected to get married and have a child, and not doing so within the first year ends your game. Nami gets to stay in the valley with her best friend, and you fulfill a familial expectation, as well as obtain a life-long companion.
Because of how old-fashioned A Wonderful Life is, I doubt this theory is true. But it's nice to think that there's an alternative relationship option for those who aren't fond of the romance aspect, and that there's representation of this kind, whether you headcanon Nami as lesbian, asexual, etc. With that being said, I do think that Nami's events with Gustafa within AWL have a lot more romantic undertones than those she has with the player. I wonder how the Story of Seasons version of Nami will be different? Will she be more affectionate? Are they going to keep rival events in? (I sure hope so--I think Gustafa & Nami are a really cute couple!)

Hi, I've seen you're still doing the character breakdown thing and wondered if you could do one with Nami from AWL/HM DS? :)
Ah, Nami, our soft-spoken wanderer.  She’s often found in nature contemplating various things and her past is a bit of a mystery.  She’s a very curious character and I’m really fond of her.
Tumblr media
How I feel about this character: My first exposure to Nami was in Harvest Moon DS.  She struck me as quiet, thoughtful, and a little lonely.  I was also a little intimidated by her because she was much more blunt than the other female characters in general.  I really like her and think that she’s an interesting character with a lot of potential for an extended backstory.  I think that wanderer characters would have some fascinating stories.  I’ve yet to finish wooing her on my file, but she’s probably one of my favorite girls in Forget-Me-Not Valley, if not my favorite.
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Nami x Farmer: I feel like Nami would adjust well to farm life.  She asks the player character about the farm and enjoys the tranquility of it.  Although she doesn’t really help with farm chores in game, I can easily imagine her wanting to be part of it all, eager to give it a try.  She admires the farmer for their independence and their ability to be self-sufficient.
Nami x Muffy: Nami frequenting the bar, Muffy’s disappointment with men that always let her down… Ah, I can imagine an angsty fic where the two fall in love without realizing it and Muffy chases after Nami after she runs out of money and has to leave town.
Nami x Rock: Okay, hear me out, lol.  They spend a lot of time together at the inn.  I think that they could teach each other important lessons about taking responsibility and opening up to others.  I could see Ruby being really happy with this arrangement, as I feel she really sees Nami as a daughter.  It could be one of those cases where opposites attract.  At the very least, it would be really interesting.
Nami x Cody: They both have inquiring minds and creative sides.  I feel like Nami would be really intrigued by Cody’s art and maybe even get involved in creating her own.  It would be really cute if she moved in with him and they had a studio together, creating their own works and maybe even some collaborations.
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Nami/Gustafa: I feel like these two have good chemistry and would be great friends.  They both have wonder for the world around them and want to wander and explore.  I think they’d have interesting stories to tell each other.
Nami/Griffin: As a regular at the bar, Nami and Griffin would definitely be seeing each other a lot.  I can see Griffin giving Nami advice when she asks for it and him being a sort of mentor for her.  Meanwhile, I think Nami’s curiosity about the world in general would make for some good conversations.
Nami/Ruby:  I can easily see Ruby taking Nami in as a daughter.  The two get along very well, and Nami is much more grateful for the things Ruby does than her own son.  I can see Nami helping around the inn to earn a little extra money and Ruby giving her free dinners to her favorite tenant.
Nami/Marlin: These two could easily be drinking buddies, venting about their days and just having lots of comfortable silence between the two of them.
Nami/Takakura:  I feel like these two would be good friends, especially if Nami marries the farmer and lives on the property.  I could imagine Takakura teaching her all about animal care and Nami being fascinated by it.  I imagine the bond being a bit of a father/daughter one.
My unpopular opinion about this character
I’m going to duck and cover as I say this, but I feel like Nami x Gustafa feels forced in the games.  Gustafa seems perfectly happy doing his own thing, and while I feel that they could spend some quality time together, I have a hard time imagining it as romantic.  Honestly, I think Cody would be a much better partner for her.  Gustafa and Cody do have similar qualities such as creativity and a pure wonder when it comes to appreciating the world around them, but Cody is a little more introverted and soft spoken.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
I really liked Nami’s interactions with Ruby at the inn, and I was hoping that her and Rock would become closer and be good influences on each other.  Now, before you ask me how Rock can be a good influence on anyone, he can teach her that it’s okay to rely on people sometimes, and also how to speak up for herself and have more confidence in general.  I feel like her independence can also be a good thing, though, and she’d have a lot to teach Rock, including gratitude for what you are given.  I really like the idea of Ruby, Rock, Tim, and Nami as a family unit.
I’d also love more backstory on Nami’s family.  Nami mentions her father, but it’s hard to tell what he’s like other than he wasn’t happy about her leaving and could possibly be worried about her.  It does give a little more wiggle room when it comes to writing fanfiction for her, but in game it feels like a lingering mystery.

How they respond to hearing you have a crush on them.
CELIA/CECILIA
Cecilia overhears Marlin grumbling to Vesta one morning about you. Though she knows it's wrong, she pauses on the stairs to listen in. He is complaining about how obvious you are in having a crush on Ceci. Marlin doesn’t think you’re a good fit for her. You distract her from work and aren’t good enough with nothing but a run-down farm to your name. Vesta laughs and says she likes your sincerity and determination. She thinks you’d be a perfect fit for Cecilia with how much progress you made on the farm in such a short time. Ceci’s face flushes at the thought; it feels like an impossible dream to think you would like her. Why would you choose her? You were close with the glamorous, outgoing Molly and accomplished young Lumina. Not to mention the last time you met, Cecilia had unloaded about an arranged marriage and her misgivings. The next time you see Cecilia, she seems hesitant to speak with you and avoids meeting your eyes. Cecilia nervously laughs when you ask what’s wrong and confesses what she overheard this morning between Marlin and Vesta. You confirm that you do have feelings for her. You were doing your best to be discreet since Cecilia had the arranged marriage date coming up, and you wanted the best for her. She quickly assures you that she has the same feelings and would always choose you over anyone else.
CODY/GORDY
Gordy is surprised when Gustafa lets slip you have a crush on him. Gustafa quickly backtracks and asks that Gordy doesn’t let you know. He was told the secret in confidence, but Gustafa thought Gordy and you would be great together. Gordy gives the thought serious consideration over the next couple of days. His work has always consumed his mind rather than love. As he worked on sorting through his feelings on this information, Gordy naturally became more attentive to observing you when you spoke with him. You didn’t seem unaware of this new focus. You blushed as the large man’s purple eyes bore into your own. Gordy realizes he has had more inspiration and motivation since you arrived in the valley. The sculpture outside his house is improving as Gordy spends time with you, and he enjoys your moments together. Is this the love that Gustafa sings about? Gordy decides to explore where these feelings lead. He starts to prolong conversations with you when he sees you. Gordy doesn’t want to rush through his feelings for you, so he can one day express them adequately with his art.
DARYL
He overhears Rock complaining to Lumina about why anyone, especially you, would have a crush on Daryl. He just doesn’t get it. Daryl had heard the term throughout his school years but never paid it much thought. He couldn’t understand why people were so wrapped in liking someone and made a note to research a ‘crush’ in more detail at the lab. A crush was a bit more than just liking someone Daryl discovered. Instead, it is an intense and usually passive infatuation. All valuable and reliable information ended with the dictionary’s definition. Daryl’s interest peeked. He wasted no time in confronting you about your crush and that he wished to observe the physiological systems at play. You blinked in surprise, shocked by the sudden request but agreed. He quickly identified that blushing and sweaty hands occurred alongside dilated pupils. You had an increased heart rate, but he could not get an accurate baseline read as it spiked each time he tried. Daryl noticed you tripped over your words with him and not with others in the valley. Daryl only needed to discover why his lab felt warmer and his stomach tight when you were around.
FLORA
Flora is flattered when she hears you have a crush on her. She had never given much thought to matters of infatuation or love. Flora likes the idea of one day getting married and having children, but her career seemed more pressing after school. Your crush helped explain how you made so much time to help at the site with a farm to run. Flora spends a few weeks working through her feelings. The last thing she wants to do is act rashly on impulse. She is uncertain if she feels love or infatuation for you. Flora enjoys your company. She wonders where you are and if you’re okay when you are late or don’t arrive at the dig site. Could this be the start of affection? She had many crushes of her own when she was a young girl. They seemed so long ago Flora wasn’t sure of her feelings, and all the pondering hadn’t helped. She would like to focus on you and see what caused her indecision. Flora soon invites you to dinner at the cafe to spend time together outside work.
GUSTAFA
You were sitting by his yurt, humming along to the chords Gustafa strummed. You reflected on how close you had gotten to Gustafa. You never expected it from the brief pointing out Takakura did. After all, Gustafa was a traveling musician. Who knew how long he would stick around here? His playing felt so relaxing to stop and listen to as you struggled. The melodies he played were like a spell to lift your troubles for snatches of time before resuming your responsibilities once more.
“What’d you think?” Gustafa’s voice roused you from thought.
“I like you.”
You watched his eyebrows shoot up in surprise from behind his glasses as you froze in wide-eyed horror. That was not what you meant to say. Mortified, you hurriedly tried to explain. You had a sinking feeling as he tugged the wide brim of his pointed hat down to hide his face further. Gustafa softly explained that your confession made things easier for him. He’s had a crush on you for a while but was worried about you not feeling the same. Gustafa asked if you’d like to meet with him for a drink at the bar that evening.
LUMINA
Lumina felt frustrated when she discovered you had a crush on her. She was obvious in dropping hints of her crush on you. At least, she thought she had been. How could she make it more clear? Lumina was scared to confess. What if she was wrong and you only thought of her as a friend? Or worse, like a sister. No, she would much rather you confess first. It needed to be before Aunt Romana found out you were who she was pining for and got involved. But how? Lumina’s eyes widened as she had a brilliant idea. You said something interesting the other day that could help move things along. The next time you came by, Lumina mentioned she had been thinking of how you didn’t know how to play an instrument. It was one of the reasons you liked to listen to her play. Lumina gazed off to the side and shuffled her feet as she offered to teach you. She was thrilled when you enthusiastically agreed to lessons. Lumina found chances to ‘accidentally’ brush hands or correct your placement as you sat squeezed together on the piano bench. Each of your blushes felt like she was inching closer to one of you admitting your feelings.
MARLIN/MATTHEW
Marlin returns to the house after speaking to you about Cecilia turning into Vesta in his most recent dream. Ceci greets him at the door with a huge grin and a sparkle in her eyes. Marlin froze in shock as she asked what you talked about. He mumbled something about hybrid crops. Marlin had barely told you and certainly didn’t want to share his dream with either of them. Cecilia let out a disappointed sigh in response. She was so sure you had confessed. Nonplussed, Marlin asked what she was talking about. Vesta says it's because you obviously like him a great deal when Ceci hesitates to answer. He grumbles that they must be mistaken; you’re that nice to everyone. His sister shakes her head, telling him he should watch you closer if he thinks that. Marlin watches you more as you pass by their farm. He doesn’t see anything different at all as you wave towards them. Marlin headed to the cafe with his hands shoved in his pockets. He had foolishly gotten his hopes up listening to Cecilia and Vesta. Marlin hoped a drink would help. He didn’t expect to see you selling from a stall. It stung to see you smile at Gordy as you passed over some flowers. He was about to turn and leave when your eyes met. Your radiant smile when you met his eyes made him realize Vesta was right. You didn’t give a smile like that to everyone.
MUFFY/MOLLY
She’s heard this before about prior guys, and nothing ever came of it. So, Molly does her best not to get her hopes up. She will not confront you but continues to act the same as before. Molly’s teasing and flirting are not limited to you as Molly continues the occasional date with city boys. She comes to you for support and a shoulder to cry on with each disastrous result. Eventually, you’re frustrated enough to tell her to stop. Molly shouldn’t keep entertaining guys that aren’t good enough for her. YOU like her and have for a while now and would treat her like the goddess she is. You avoid looking at Molly while trying to get your blush under control from such a confession. When the silence drags on, you peek at Molly to see her reaction. The tears in her green eyes cause you to panic as you fumble to comfort her and apologize. Molly brushes you off as she smiles through her tears. She was just surprised you had such strong feelings for her. Molly was scared to get her hopes up, but to hear you confess made her so happy she couldn’t stop the tears of relief. Her eyes crinkle with a giant smile as you promise this is the first and last time you’ll make her cry.
NAMI
Nami realizes she has a crush on you long before she finds out it goes both ways. At first, Nami couldn’t figure out her feelings. She traveled around so much that she didn’t usually make close connections with others. The valley had been different, and she’d stayed too long to leave at this point. Nami should have left the first day you arrived. She was proud of how great she had hidden her growing feelings or thought she was. Nami felt a bit disappointed when you left to continue your day.  After watching her parents' relationship fall apart as a child, she had trouble trusting there were good ones. Galen and Nina had shown her that love could easily carry on for years. Nami wanted that. However, each time she thought to confess, her doubts would overwhelm her. When you admitted your feelings, Nami felt she could be honest too.
ROCK
“Are you sure you’re not tired? You’ve been running through my-”
“Yeah, I am tired. Your dog is such a sore loser when he loses races to me. I’m glad someone understands how taxing that is.” Rock cut off your cheesy pickup line rattling about his day on your farm. You thought this would be the easiest way to say you liked him. You could brush it off as a joke at the worst. You never expected he would interrupt you before you could finish. At least he was happy you sympathized with him, so it wasn’t a complete miss.
“Do you know CPR? Because-”
“Nah, Dr. Baddoch tried to tell me, but it seemed like a lot to remember. And he said you’d have to do compressions until a professional arrived. Do you know how far off he lives? I think it’s better left to someone else.”
Rock was driving you to frustration. Was he being this difficult on purpose? You seriously doubted it, but he foiled each pickup line.
“I bet you dinner that-”
“Dinner sounds great. We can skip the bet and just to you winning. What did you plan on-” You cut him off by pressing your lips to his. If he wouldn’t stay quiet, then you’d make sure he found out another way.
