A Royal Portrait

Synopsis: Daenarya and Maiele pose for a royal portrait.

Mal Volari and Tyril Starfury found themselves in the elegant gardens of the White Tower palace. Rich tapestries and gilded frames adorned the walls of the halls that led them there. The garden itself teemed with vibrantly colored flora and was bathed in warm, beautiful sunlight. Before them stood Daenarya and Maiele, their partners, radiant in their regal attire, posing for a portrait. The air was filled with a sense of nobility, and the room was abuzz with whispers of admiration for the pair's noted accomplishments in saving the realm of light.

A mischievous smile spread on Mal's face as he sprawled across a lavish red velvet chair, one leg hanging over the armrest. He watched Daenarya with unabashed adoration as she hugged close to Maiele, the pair wearing matching grins. His gaze drifted to Tyril, who stood aloof, his stoic demeanor a stark contrast to Mal's own.

As the artist worked diligently, Daenarya and Maiele shared secrets in hushed tones too quiet for anyone to overhear, their laughter echoing through the space. An occasional reminder by the artist to keep still kept them in check.

Mal's eyes sparkled as he tried to decipher their whispers. He was certain he could read lips. He thought he had gotten it down to a science, yet Daeanarya had assured him time and time again he wasn't even close. Whether that was true or she just wanted to keep him guessing, he could never be positively sure. Either way, it wouldn't stop him from trying.

Tyril continued observing in silence, his gaze never leaving Maiele. His face was an unreadable mask, but a faint hint of a smile tugged at the corner of his lips, almost imperceptible to the untrained eye, yet those who knew him were familiar with the sentiment. It hadn't left since the moment Maiele entered his life.

Mal's prolonged audible exhale broke the serene atmosphere. When his sigh didn't get the reaction he intended, he repeated the gesture louder and with a more dramatic flair, pulling the eyes of many in the room, but he was only after one.

"Are you quite alright?" Tyril scowled at his uncivilized behavior.

"Since you asked—" He slipped further into the plush cushioning. "Why do Daenarya and Maiele get a royal painting, and we don't?" he grumbled, his tone laced with playful envy. "We were there too."

"You were given the choice to have a portrait commissioned," Tyril responded, his voice measured and precise, not giving into Mal's tantrum. "However, you chose that ridiculous diamond instead."

Mal held out the gem in question, allowing it to catch the sunlight, scattering it into a dazzling array. "This diamond deserved to be freed, not hidden away in some rich snob's collection. I did it a favor." Mal's smile grew wider as he admired the gem's brilliance. "Leaving it would have been a disservice to such a precious treasure." He hugged and petted the stone as if it were a cherished pet.

Tyril's attempt to hide his frustration failed, a subtle crease forming between his brows that betrayed him. "I hope you plan to give that to Daenarya." His tone was firm as their gazes met in shared understanding. "She's far too good for a rogue like you."

Mal's shoulders slumped in feigned defeat. "Yeah, I know," he admitted, his eyes shining as he glanced toward her. "Perhaps I could have the diamond split in half. This way she and I can have matching stones. I get a piece, and so does she. That's romantic, right?"

Tyril's patience waned with each passing moment. "I hope for your sake that was in jest."

"So, that would be a no on the romance angle?"

A quiet exhale slipped from the elf's lips, betraying his diplomatic presence. His focus returned to the subjects of the royal portrait. His muscles relaxed as his gaze once more settled on Maiele, who continued to whisper and giggle along with Daenarya.

"Wait—" Mal interrupted the elf's thoughts again. "Why aren't you getting a portrait?" A mischievous glint sparkled in his eyes; his lips spread into a sly grin. "Did you take a gem too?"

Tyril's stoic countenance faltered as it only could in the rogue's presence. His brows knit together, and he regarded Mal incredulously before composing himself. "Certainly not. I have little need for glittering trinkets or having my portrait hung in a palace to collect dust." Despite being of a noble house himself, Tyril found the concept of ostentatious displays of wealth and vanity tiresome.

"So your portrait isn't hanging triumphantly in House Starfury at this very moment?" Mal wagged his brow at Tyril.

"If such a portrait were to hang, it would be at the request of Maiele supported by Adrina," Tyril explained, the slightest purple hue flushed on his cheeks. "I protested profusely."

"He is something, isn't he," Mal mused, his attention shifting back to the subjects of the current portrait. "They both are."

"Indeed." With one word, Tyril said so much more. The admiration in his tone and the pride filling his eyes spoke volumes.

"Perhaps they're both too good for us," Mal quipped.

"Just this once, you may be correct." Tyril couldn't stop the smile spreading on his lips as Maiele's gaze met his.

The pair settled into silence, watching as Daenarya and Maiele continued to share secrets and laughter, their close bond on display even from a distance. The artist's strokes captured their essence, freezing a moment of their shared happiness and devoted friendship for all eternity.

Choices August Challenge 2023

This month's challenge will be a little different. The previous host had to back out so I am taking over... however, I was already planning on hosting 2 celebration weeks in August, which with the 2 book clubs would leave me with 5 events, and that's too much, even for me. So we're making August a combination month!

PlayChoice Game's 7th birthday is August 17th, so instead of having a birthday week, I'm including prompts for this event below and it'll run through the entire month of August.

There will also be prompts for Hollywood U + High School Story, as it's been one year since PB pulled those games. Without their success, we might not have gotten Choices.

Also, I've rescheduled sibling appreciation week a few times, so let's just add that in.

I also have some August holidays and summer prompts.

And lastly, similar to @choicesprompts, if you have a WIP from a previous challenge or event from this year that you really want to finish, feel free to submit it here too (regardless of the prompt). Let's clean out some WIPs.

Any of the prompts below can be used with any story/characters. They do not have to be used in the context of the "theme" they're posted under.

Long-Tailed Giant Ichneumonid Wasp - Megarhyssa macrurus

To anyone wondering why this giant wasn't included in the "Insect Highlights of 2023", it's simply because there were enough pictures taken to allow a second showcase! She's a very impressive creature, and I'm fortunate to have found her last year. I hope to find a few more specimens in the future, especially if they revisit the tree this one was exploring or similar trees in the surrounding area. As a reminder, Giant Ichneumonids like this specimen are drawn to old, decaying trees in search of Pigeon Horntail larvae for their own eggs. Using their elongated ovipositor they pierce through the wood like a syringe, paralyze a developing larva and place an egg on it. This whole process is done without even so much as seeing the larvae hidden in the tree trunk, but they are searched for via scent cues on the bark, listening for sounds via her legs and feeling for them with her sting as it is pressed downward! Though it looks unwieldy, it is surprisingly easy for an Ichneumon Wasp of this size to orient itself to "drill for larvae". When she's decided on a suitable location, she extends her abdomen and legs as far as they will go, orienting her ovipositor to be as vertical as possible! Since the ovipositor is long, it will take a series a fine adjustments to pull it in so that it lines up parallel to the abdomen.

After it is pressed into the tree trunk the ovipositor is fully unsheathed and the Long-Tailed Giant's search proceeds. The individual in these pictures had just begun to drill for larvae (and had re-sheathed upon my return 1 hour later) Although it may seem precarious, it's important to keep in mind that the ovipositor (which can be more than twice the length of the insect’s body) is not a stiff filament. It appears stiff while inside its sheath and carried behind the insect under normal circumstances. In fact, it is somewhat flexible and can be maneuvered around tree-bound obstacles while searching for larvae. The flexibility also offers an easier exit when withdrawing from the hole in the tree, but not a hasty one: should the ovipositor became damaged, the Wasp will not be able to lay eggs, so withdrawal is monitored carefully. If you'd really like to see an unwieldly "stinger", try and observe an Ichneumon flailing the ovipositor around and place it smoothly back inside her sheath! Do not fear when observing this imposing beauty; though the ovipositor is long and prominent, her "stinger" cannot harm a human. As you've read above, her stinging process requires a lot of telegraphing to be effective, and Ichneumonid adults are not predators nor are they interested in humans. Though Wasps, there is a world of difference between Ichneumonids and some of the more common social Wasps of Ontario.

"We start with the least spicy wing and work our way up. First one to crack and need milk to cool their mouth down loses. You in?" LETZTES PFLANZEN DIESES JAHR! 💪🏾👵🏽👍🏾🌼🐝

Endlich ist es soweit! Die letzten Pflanzen dieses Jahres sind angekommen und ich bin mehr als zufrieden mit meiner Auswahl.🌸 Dank der Gärtnerei Stauden Gänge aus Gorch konnte ich einige Nachzügler finden, die perfekt als Nektartankstellen für Wildbienen und andere nektarsuchende Insekten dienen werden.

Die Pflanzen kamen super gut abgepolstert, fixiert und verpackt bei mir an - ganz ohne Schütteln oder Werfen. Ich habe sie direkt gegossen und an einem sicheren Platz an der frischen Luft platziert, damit sie sich von der Reise erholen und sich auf ihre neue Heimat einstimmen können. Es ist bereits erstaunlich zu sehen, wie sich schon jetzt Hummeln und Wespen in meiner kleinen Oase eingefunden haben.

Morgen werde ich die grünen Seelchen dann endlich verbuddeln und sie in die Erde einbetten. Ich kann es kaum erwarten!🌿

Ich bin überglücklich mit meiner neuen Pflanzenauswahl und freue mich schon darauf, wenn sie in voller Blüte stehen. Falls jemand in der Nähe noch Pflanzen zum Tauschen oder als Geschenk hat, die Früchte tragen oder zumindest Nektar bieten, dann meldet euch gerne bei mir! Whitetail Dragonfly - Plathemis lydia

As expected, the insects of High Park are enjoying their summer! With flowers everywhere, balmy temperatures and lush wilderness, what's not to love? Nowhere is this more apparent than by High Park's little ponds and Grenadier Pond, where the Dragonflies hunt other insects and sun themselves during the day. They're having a great time, but unfortunately this makes photography tough. Bide your time, and you may get an opportunity to capture photos of a specimen landing on a piece of vegetation or a man-made structure as it rests. With a specimen like this one, the pruinose (white wax-powder) coating along the abdomen makes an aged gentlemen, such as this one, hard to miss (even from a distance). Even mroe beautiful are the colored parts of the wings, near the base. However, just as you can see his lovely features, he sees you back with those large compound eyes. The eyes are quite remarkable, but make sneaking up on them virtually impossible, so either have a net on hand or chase your Dragonflies slowly. If they need to rest, they may not fly far away the first time; this specimen took off for the far side of the pond after 3 attempts. He was always a step ahead of me, but that's how Dragonflies work.

Visional awareness and acuity are some of their greatest assets, in conjunction with their tremendous flight capabilities and aerial prowess, of course. Consider this however, and this goes for most (if not all) Dragonflies, not just Skimmers like the individual here: Dragonfly eyes are such a great asset, that there's little room on their face for long antennae. Given their position as well - between the eyes and the facial plate - long antennae may prove to be cumbersome and intrusive during flight, especially for a speedy, flying predator. That being said, the reduced antennae that Odonates possess do have (at least) 2 crucial functions: catching scents the air, and gauging air speed during flight. Besides, a Dragonfly can feel the insects or objects they catch using its legs and strong mandibles! However, the insect world presents amazing creatures and evolutionary trajectories, so it's not impossible to find a fast-flying, long-antenna-ed, predatory insect. Though the head and wing venation makes Dragonflies distinct, if you stumble upon a large-eyed, net-winged, Dragonfly-like creature with long antennae, you may have discovered an Owlfly (one of the branches of Neuroptera)!
