The Bogart Diaries #23: Trouble (Part Two)

Synopsis: After Thomas said he wasn't going to wear a Halloween costume to match Bogart, Alex found a loophole. (Alex has secretly had a Pictagram account for Bogart since his adoption, despite Thomas saying no. [fic]) This follows Trouble (Part One) .

A/N: The stunning art in the edit is by the always incredible @vantaray (been holding onto this for a while now!) I always knew this was the post that would be the one to get Thomas's attention to discover Bogart's account, I just needed to figure out the occasion!

Alex chewed the corner of her lip, heat rising in her cheeks. "All good things come to an end." She pressed a kiss to Bogart's head, tossing her phone on the table in front of her. "We might be in trouble."

The loyal black lab rested his head in her lap. A soft whimper escaped him as he sensed her anxiety.

She couldn't bring herself to pick up her phone from the coffee table, and yet, she couldn't take her eyes off of the red blinking light signifying new notifications. The screen illuminated a few times with his picture, as each time she ignored his calls.

She had always known there was a chance Thomas would discover Bogart's account...eventually, but with each new post, the secret grew, and its discovery seemed less and less likely. He had even been tagged in a couple of the past posts, and nothing! He'd have to log in to his social media to notice, and he didn't. Why had he now? Why today? Her perfect holiday surprise, ruined.

It had all been fun until that comment. Explain. Not only had he found the account, but it had to be that photo. She wasn't sure if he'd be furious or not, but as long as she didn't check her messages, she wouldn't need to find out.

The unmistakable roar of his vintage sports car rolled up the driveway. Her ears were trained on every sound; The rhythm of the grandfather clock in the hall seemed deafening as she listened for the door to open, awaiting the inevitable.

She pulled her legs up against her chest, resting her head on her knees, waiting and fearing the worst.

"Alex?"

"In here." She shifted uncomfortably, trying to put on a smile as he turned the corner. "How was your day?"

His stoic face remained unchanged. "Alex."

"Who's Alex?" She shrugged. A nervous giggle slipped from her lips that quickly turned downward. "Sorry."

"Not answering your phone," he stated calmly, laying his briefcase and coat on the armchair.

"No," she answered simply. She glanced down at the device, still illuminating with unread notifications.

"Any particular reason?"

She looked up as he moved closer. Her deep brown eyes misted over. "Are you mad? Do you absolutely hate me?"

"I—" Thomas sighed. "I don't know what I am."

Alex nodded, giving him time. "That's fair."

The cushions dipped as he took a seat beside her. "I could never hate you."

"I'm sorry," she whispered, interrupting him. "I should have told you. I was going to, but—"

"You didn't."

"I didn't."

"Why didn't you?"

"It just kind of became this joke—this silly secret. It was fun, but I never meant to hurt you." She turned away, blinking back the tears of worry that had built up and were now threatening to break.

"Alex." His voice was calm and sure. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder.

She pulled away. "It's my fault."

"I know. No argument from me." The words weren't harsh or critical. His eyes crinkled in the corner. "Come here."

Alex didn't resist this time. Instead, she buried her face in him, hiding her shame.

His fingers threaded tenderly through her silky hair.

"I love you, Thomas," she sniffled.

"I know that, too." He held her close. His hands massaged her back. "My love for you was never in doubt."

"Really?" Her eyes shimmered as she looked up at him.

"Alex, if none of the eccentric things you've done in the past have pushed me away, why would this?" His lips curled in the corners, his eyes brightening.

"But you didn't want Bogart to have a Pictagram," she pressed.

"When has that stopped you before?" His brow arched challengingly.

She hid her face as a smile broke her worry. "Am I that awful?"

"You're that wonderful, darling. You push me out of my comfort zone. I might not always enjoy it, but you're always there to guide me through it."

"How did I get so lucky? I love you so much, Thomas!" Alex's lips crashed on his, kissing him freely, not to get her way, simply in adoration of her husband.

"I will always love you, my Alex, even when you exploit loopholes in my words or engage in activities I don't see the appeal of." He continued stroking her back soothingly.

"Okay, but you have to admit, Bogart makes a pretty perfect mini-you." She nodded enthusiastically, her spirit returning. She jolted upright, eyes widening with glee and excitement, "Do you want to see it?!"

She began to jump off the couch, but his steady hand kept her beside him. "I'm more curious as to if Miss Sinclair made you a matching design as well. If I remember correctly, you had wanted the three of us to match."

Alex licked her lips. "She offered, but I kind of had my own idea."

"Of course, you did." He smirked. "Do I want to know?"

"Hmm," she pondered, a playful glint growing in her eyes. "Well, in the spirit of not keeping any more secrets it does seem only fair."

Thomas settled more comfortably on the couch, as Alex leaned into him.

"I was thinking it would be best if, for this particular costume idea, I only match you in private." Her fingers grazed over the soft, luxurious fabric of his tie, letting it flow between her fingers. "You have a lot of layers, Mr. Hunt, but I thought this one would suit me best." Slowly, she loosened his tie, slipping it off his neck. "What do you think?" She draped it over her shoulders, brushing her shirt to the side. "I figured why make things more complicated when I can so easily slip on this tie and 'voilà'! My own special brand of Thomas Hunt chic."

He watched as she dangled the end of the tie over her breast, imaging how she'd look with his tie exclusively. He wrapped his arms around her waist, guiding her into his lap. "I think I can work with that."

"Yeah?" She wrapped her arms around his neck. "It's not too much?"

"Too much?" He suppressed a laugh, shaking his head softly to the sides. "Just right." Thomas curled his finger under her chin, bringing her lips closer. "I think this is going to be my favorite Halloween, yet."

"For Bogart's adorable costume?" She winked, kissing his nose. Her fingers massaged the hair on the back of his neck.

His gaze shifted to the dog, lying protectively on the floor beside them. "For Bogart," he sighed reluctantly, even if he was secretly looking forward to seeing the dog's costume in person. "And for you."

"I am pretty wonderful," she teased, brushing a delicate kiss to his lips.

"You have no idea how wonderful you are, my dear."

"Thomas—" Alex leaned back, her eyes sparkling under his tender adoration.

He wrapped her safely in his arms, kissing her softly, again and again, relieving any worry she still might have.

This story has been a long time coming. I hope it doesn't disappoint. As I mentioned at the beginning, I always knew this would be the post that made Thomas aware of Bogart's social media, I just couldn't settle on the event and the reaction.

I hope this story does them justice. ❤️
