Hi Emma!

I’m doing a little ask series called “bafflingly British” where I ask my UK friends questions about things even I, a self proclaimed Anglophile, find confusing.

My question for you is about pudding. I understand that pudding means dessert and not the specific thing that is pudding here, I can wrap my head around that. But last week I heard “steak pudding”

The accompanying picture was of a steak pie. We don’t really have meat pies here but I really wish we did, they look delicious!

How is steak pie pudding? I thought I understood! Please help!

Ooo pudding! I love pudding, but definitely the sweet kind 😋 and I would use pudding to mean dessert in general - maybe that’s more of a northern thing, I’m not sure.

Pudding in the way that you’re referring to is something made with suet and that could be sweet or savoury. For savoury puddings you can get them filled with any meat but I guess the most popular is probably steak and kidney pudding. You can also have dumplings made from suet that go with stew. Sweet versions would be jam roly poly and spotted dick (yes, you read that right 😳)

This got me thinking about what suet actually is so I googled it and… instant regret! I won’t go into it here 🫣 but if you have a strong stomach then it’s easy to find out more!

I’m sorry it’s taken me a while to get to this ask - blame deadlines and chaotic madness trying to get work over the line… But it did give me time to think!

Okay, let’s go…

Favourite word: extraordinary. I use it too much, probably, but I love it. It’s like a nod to being elevated out of the everyday, but it is a reminder that it’s rooted in the ‘ordinary’, too - if that makes sense.

Least favourite word: oh, god. I have so many. The one that springs to mind? Sheath. *shudders*

What turns me on: Passion. I don’t mean in a sexual way, necessarily (though that helps). I just love seeing people who care about what they do, about the world. Not in a cringe performative way, either. Just… I don’t know. Nerding out is one of my love languages, and I love seeing people who are the same.

What turns me off: Performative self-importance. Thinking you’re smarter than everyone else. (Hi there, ex!)

What is my favourite curse word: I’m Irish. Swearing is punctuation. I’m pretty basic. “Fuck” is a classic. I’m sometimes known to say “shitbiscuits”.

What sound or noise do I love?: My niece saying my name. My nephew laughing. She’s two, he’s four months. It’s the best sound.

What sound or noise do I hate?: As a misophonia sufferer - mouth noises. Not all, but most. Loud eating makes me want to die.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?: I’d quite like to be a full-time novelist, or to make clothes full-time.

What profession would you not like to do?: Nursing or care work. I’m in awe of people who do these incredible roles, I know I wouldn’t have the emotional or mental capacity.

If heaven exists?: “You made a difference. And you were so loved.”

* What is your favorite word? Onomatopoeia

* What is your least favorite word? Bandwidth. As a corporate girlie, I hear that one a LOT along with a plethora of other corporate jargon.

* What turns you on? Humor, kindness, and patience. (And if I’m being a thot, then pretty eyes and a nice smile…and a good head of hair.)

* What turns you off? Being rude (in general but especially to anyone in the service industry), dishonest, and arrogant.

* What is your favorite curse word? In English, fuck. In Spanish, coño.

* What sound or noise do you love? There’s this little sound my dog makes when she’s doing a “biiiig stretch” and it’s adorable. Also, whenever my daughter laughs, but especially when she belly laughs.

* What sound or noise do you hate? I am a full blown hypocrite for saying this because I do it, but hearing someone pop their knuckles.

Oooh, interesting... really had to think about some of these 🤔

1. My favourite word is probably 'flump'. Makes me giggle like I'm 8 years-old again. 🤭

2. I love words in general, so I don't really have one that brings any dislike to mind... For a long time I couldn't pronounce the word millennium, I kept saying 'millellium' 😆 So maybe that one, purely because of my own ineptitude.

3. My turns on include kindness, affection and respect. I also get turned on by imperfection and quirks. If we are talking sexy times, then nothing is off the table, pretty much. 😏

4. Turn offs include ignorance, arrogance and anyone who is unkind to animals. And feet. I can't stand feet. 🤢 My feet, your feet. Anyone's feet. Nope. Doesn't do it for me. Put your damn socks back on.

5. I'm British, we love the C word. 😎

6. Pedro wheezing laughing is deffo up there, but I also love the sound of laughter in general. Knowing someone is enjoying something in the moment makes me smile and laugh - it's infectious.

7. That noise when you flump a balloon. You know, like that rubbery-squeak sound on it's surface. Nah fam. ✋🏻

8. I'd love to be a professional photographer. I like doing it for a hobby and wish I had the skills to do it for a living. Maybe one day.

9. My current profession. I work in Finance and it's boring as hell. It pays well, that's the only reason I've stayed in it for so long 😅

10. "I wasn't expecting you..." because I'm destined to kick it with Lucifer when I pass on, he's much more exciting 😜

What is your favorite word? Cwtch. It's Welsh and there's no direct translation, but loosely means hug ❤️

What is your least favorite word? I'm a bit of a hypocrite because I tend to bust this out here and there, but it's 'see you next Tuesday' 😉 lol

What turns you on? Someone who makes me laugh, is genuine and kind. As cliche as it sounds, looks really do come and go, if you're not with someone who can make you smile and let you be yourself around them, then it's pretty dull.

What turns you off? Rude people - instant dislike, there's no need for it unprovoked. Also, people who don't hold doors open and it let it close on you when you're right there - I hope they get a perpetual rock in their shoe.

What is your favorite curse word? Knob is high on the rotation right now, kinda fits all kinds of situations. Other than that you can't beat the classic fuck.

What sound or noise do you love? Rain on the window in the early evening when you're curled up inside with a blanket and a good book.

What sound or noise do you hate? I'm that person who can't stand the sound of people eating - it's like nails on a chalkboard to me and I want to rip my hair out. Especially when they bite the fork too.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Law. I think I'd make a good lawyer, I'm usually very good at spinning situations, to the point Mr. Truly has said I missed my calling for politics lol. Plus it all fascinates me, I'd like to have some kind of career in that realm.

What profession would you not like to do? Anything that is food services - because I know I would be terrible. I have a really poor short-term memory, if it's not in front of me, I can easily forget about it. So if I got an order fired at me I'd probably be asking you to repeat it several times before I got it.

Hi Kat, I went to a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth last night and it made me think of you!

If you’re still down to answer a fruit ask, I was wondering if I might submit:

🍑 If you could make a connection between your favorite character and another work you care about (whether a crossover/fusion or a wonderfully “pretentious” literary reference) what would it be? How would it work?

But also perhaps as a bit of a more specific play on the question: how might you pair (either just in your head or as a future writing endeavour) some of your fave characters to write with some of your favourite music (a la All About the Bass)? Or perhaps are there characters that you associate with certain music outside of your own taste?

M! How lovely for you to think of me 🥰  How was the performance? I am not very familiar with Tchaikovsky’s 5th other than that famous melody in the second movement, but you really can't go wrong with Tchaikovsky!

This is such a fantastic question!  I really wanted to give it some thought and things got a little out of hand lol.  My favorite symphony is Mahler 1 “Titan” which was originally considered a symphonic poem.

I love music that paints a mental picture.  I’ve had the pleasure of performing it twice and each time as I have worked on it, I have daydreamed about the scenes happening as I play.  So, I started thinking about what a fic inspired by Mahler 1 would look like and which Pedro boy belonged in that world.  Here’s what I came up with… (movement titles are my own interpretation)

Movement 1: Tuning the Universe

We open with sunrise; the world is waking up.  Something about it is unusual though—the colors are too bright, the flowers too plentiful.  We realize we are in the realm of the fae.  Our hero, Javi Gutierrez, stretches and considers the world around him.  He basks in the sunshine and greets the woodland creatures.  His fellow fae go about their business while he frolics through a meadow.  He comes upon a stream and notices you, a human woman, washing clothes.  Since you are in the human realm, you are shadowed in gray, not the vibrant colors of Javi’s fae world, but he is captivated by you.  You are so beautiful, even in shadows.  But you seem sad, resigned to your gray life.  He watches you as you go about your work, staying just out of sight. Eventually you make your way back to your people-- a group of travellers.  He watches you as you take your place among them and can’t follow any longer.  He turns back to his frolicking, thinking about you.

Movement 2: A Wine-Soaked Evening

It’s late that night and the fae are having a celebration.  The wine flows as they perform courtly dances and mating rituals.  Javi watches the revelry from afar, still thinking about you from earlier.  He imagines bringing you to the fae dance – how you would spin and twirl with flowers in your hair.  His thoughts drift to the end of the evening, when the fae are drunk off their wine and the dances are no longer crisp and choreographed, but slow and syrupy.  Partners drift off into the woods for sleep and other activities.  Javi imagines kissing you in the moonlight, your soft skin and sleepy smile.  He drifts off to sleep thinking of you.

Movement 3: A Dirge

You awake to your gray life amongst the travellers, the drudgery of moving from one encampment to the next wears on you.  You can’t bring yourself to enjoy the spirited music you once did.  You feel like something is missing from your life. Suddenly, your dream from the night before rushes back to you.  You were dancing with a beautiful, golden man in the forest.  The world was sparkling with life and color, you felt so alive… so whole.  You realize that you are in love with this man in your dream.  Too quickly, the dream fades into the background and you are back in the gray, monotony of your life.

Movement 4: To the Rescue

Javi watches as your group walks along the road.  He shouldn’t have come to try to see you again, but he couldn’t resist.  As he watches, your procession is attacked by raiders!  He rushes down to your aid and bravely fights against the attackers, but he is only one man, even if he is fae.  He calls out to his fae brothers and just when hope seems lost, they arrive to save the day!  The raiders are successfully fought off.  In the aftermath, he searches for you to make sure you are ok.  He finds you and when your eyes lock you exclaim in surprise.  He’s the man from your dream!  Javi admits that as fae, he is able to enter people’s dreams and how he must have done so when he was thinking about you the night before.  Javi tells you how he had watched you and fallen in love with you.  He asks you to come back to the fae world with him.  You are surprised by the request but something in your bones calls to you that this is what you’ve been looking for.  You struggle with your decision, there are people you care about in your old life and you worry about saying goodbye, but even they can see that you have been unhappy and encourage you to go.  You tell Javi that you will, only to find out that you must leap over the chasm between the worlds in order to join the fae.  Only if you truly love the fae on the other side will you make it.  You are scared as you look to Javi on the other side, can you actually do this?  You summon all your courage and make the leap!  Javi gathers you into his arms and kisses you deeply.  The fae celebrate as fireworks light up the sky.  You and Javi run off into the fae world together hand in hand, happily ever after.

*My favourite word - flibbertigibbet which means talkative, a chatterbox. I was once described as this by a primary school teacher back when I was much more outgoing. It brings back happy memories!

*My least favourite word - Anhedonia which means the loss of interest & enjoyment in all activities that you once liked;the feeling of not caring anymore. I know that’s a bit of a heavy answer but I’ve felt that way so many times in my life. On a MUCH lighter note 😄 I also hate underpants… it gives me the ick!

*What turns me on - kindness and that ol’ cliche, a good sense of humour! And, of course, staring at photos of handsome personified, Pedro Pascal! 🫠

*What turns me off - bigotry, misogyny and racism

*My favourite curse word - I do quite like asshat and fuckwit but my favourites are probably the simplicity of fuck and shit! The phrase i mutter the most under my breath is probably ‘for fucks sake!’ whilst rolling my eyes! In fact, I love it so much I bought it on jewellery…

*The sound or noise I love - birdsong and the sound of the waves

*The sound or noise I hate - well, if you ask me that at 3:15 on a Friday afternoon I would say my own name as I would’ve heard it a gajillion times by then, from the little darlings in my class 🤭 other than that I’d probably say people who chew noisily or just people being loud for no reason, in general.

*A different profession - anything to do with animals or photography, or even better - both!

*A profession I would not like to do - anything in sales. I’m not pushy at all, I’d be hopeless at it!

Weeeell, in case anybody doesn't know yet, I'm Spanish so my fav word would be "arrebol" which refers to the reddish color of clouds at sunset (and also means flush). It's not really used, but I love it. And "amor", cause all you need is love, baby!

In English, my favorite word would be "bumblebee". I simply love it hahahaha

What is your least favorite word?

"Hate", cause I hate hate (does it make any sense? lmao) and "but", cause it usually brings something negative after pronouncing it.

What turns you on?

Naturalness and spontaneity. People who are themselves and fight for their dreams.

What is your favorite word? I'm picking a favorite in a few of the languages I know, you can't stop me.

indubitably - honestly before you asked I'm not sure I would have been able to answer, I like a lot of words, but then this word just came to me and I do love it. It's so fun to say and it feels nice. Indubitably.

необходимо (neobkhodimo) - this probably seems like a weird one if you speak Russian, but there's a story behind it. It means necessary or obligatory and it confused the crap out of me for a while when I was learning Russian because why would necessary or obligatory be a negated word?? (не- / ne- is a negative prefix) I kept trying to say обходимо (obkhodimo) instead, which makes no sense. And then one day it clicked in my head how the word breaks down:

не- / ne- = no/not/negated -об- / -ob- = around -ходи(мо)- / -khodi(mo)- = walk (verb stem) So it's literally you can't go around it. Boom! Makes perfect sense. It felt like I was actually speaking the language for the first time when I figured it out. Also a big fan of the word бегемот (begemot - hippo).

krtek - mole in Czech (like the animal). In many languages 'r' and 'l' can function like vowels as syllabic consonants (kr- is a syllable) but it's just very obvious in the spelling of Czech and I like it.

What is your least favorite word? Not a fan of:

Decimated - I'm not any kind of grammar dictator and as a linguist I'm firmly on team "words mean what we use them to mean" but for some reason my brain can't let go of the official meaning for this one instead of the common use. I'd just rather not see it. lol

Tři (three) - I can't do the Czech ř (rolled r + sh) sound to save my life (I can make each sound separately but not together)

What turns you on? Emotional and intellectual connection. I want to know someone and feel known. Pretty sure my husband would say acts of service (lol). Also hands and shoulders. And laughing/humor.

What turns you off? Feeling like the other person is impatient with me. Cruelty (casual or intentional) in worldview and treatment of others. Lack of emotional intelligence.

What is your favorite curse word? English: fuck (so useful! works in so many situations!) Russian: чёрт (chort, pleasing to say and in so many good idioms)

What sound or noise do you love? The brrrt sound my cat makes when you poke him (the cat activation noise). Also the ocean (waves).

What sound or noise do you hate? Chewing. I can't stand it and never have been able to. Sitting through extended family dinners as a child was absolute torture. It triggers overstimulation in me almost instantly and I usually have to leave the room. If I don't swipe fast enough on TikTok and someone is eating I have to like cool down and go do something else.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? If I'd been able to choose anything else it probably would have been professional dancer. I had the feet and the turnout but not the body type (even dancing 6 days/week as a teen in a company I was never skinny). In a perfect world that wouldn't matter, I guess. And it would pay well.

What profession would you not like to do? Lawyer. Absolutely no way. I get overwhelmed just thinking about it.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? If heaven does exist I'd like to also discover that there's not actually a corresponding hell, and that instead the afterlife is something kinder. So maybe just something welcoming about that. Honestly I have no idea lol

I'll start with your ✂️ question. Yes, I think it's possible to have both! I think kinks can vary with mood. I love when someone with a very strong breeding kink comments on one of my vasectomy kink fics that they now have it too. It means that I put them in a place where they could imagine it and feel it. It is such a huge compliment. Even I can get into a breeding kink on occasion lol

🍓 What’s a fic you’ve written you feel is underrated?

100% my Couples Getaway series. I love it so much and it has a few ardent fans (you know who you are 😘), but it has never gotten much traction. I guess maybe the idea isn't broadly appealing? I think if people gave it a shot, they would like it!

* What is your favorite word? Delight - more so how it feels in my body, bubbling up from my toes like champagne effervescence.

* What is your least favorite word? sabotage, because i misspelled it in the 4th grade spelling bee lololol.

* What is your favorite curse word? it's a phrase in Thai that translates as "push kick your mom". As a child I enjoyed running around yelling it and scandalizing my relatives.

* What sound or noise do you hate? i hate loud things. i am the prime candidate for those loop earplug things.

* What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Honestly i'm on like my 4th? 5th? career so at this point it's like what haven't I attempted, lolol. I feel like this one is going to stick though.
