carleyroney: Happy AAPI Heritage month! Havana was among a group of young writers and activists in the Asian community who were honored and asked to speak about their experience. Watch out NY, Assemblywoman @yuhline_niou is everything we need in our next generation of leaders. And she’s making sure the world is much more aware of the issues that oppress the Asian communities of NYState including poverty and an outrageous lack of representation (there are only 2 elected Asians in Albany!) 💪🏼❤️👏🏼 #asianamericanheritagemonth#aapi#fidi#lowermanhattan

Got back from work went to the Cardiologist & currently have to wear a Cardiac Monitor for a week-30 days. Been having tachycardia & chest pain & constant dizziness again. Celebrated our lovely #MamaLee with several fun events throughout the week for #MothersDay! ❤️ She and I were one of a few influential guests to see @aladdin at @DisneyonBroadway to commemorate #AsianAmericanHeritageMonth, and what an amazing musical it was! We started with pre-theater dinner at @katsuhama_nyc where we enjoyed Japanese comfort dishes like #tonkatsu (absolutely the best in the city IMHO), #okonomiyaki, & #takoyaki. Earlier in the week our family gathered at her favorite Korean restaurant, @sungbookdong_nyc in #LittleNeck, where we feasted on delicious #KBBQ. Our family’s passion for food stems from growing up with our mom’s excellent cooking, and I’m grateful she helped me develop a discerning palate. 😋 Hoping all the moms out there had a very special and delicious day! ❤️ #jeaniuseats #AladdinonBroadway #BroadwayIsOpen #aapi #aapiheritagemonth #Katsuhamanyc #Japanesenyc#Sungbookdong #KFood #Kfoodnyc #koreanbbq #celebratemom #jeaniusnyc #jeaniuseatsqueens — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/LslnmdX

The life and career of Yasuo Kuniyoshi (1889-1953) is reminiscent of the common immigrant’s tale of searching for opportunities in a new country, yet it is an exceptional story within the genre. Not only did Kuniyoshi defeat many odds after emigrating from his native Japan, but he was someone who identified as an American, but could not become a U.S. citizen due to legal restrictions of the time. Also, while Kuniyoshi had an remarkable career, his work is little known today. In 1948, he was the first living artist to be given a retrospective exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Very active in various artists’ groups and organizations, Kuniyoshi became an officer of the American Artists’ Congress in 1936, eventually becoming president and serving in this role until 1944. He was also appointed the first president of Artists Equity and the president of An American Group, Inc.
In 1906, at the age of 16, Kuniyoshi left his home country, Japan in the hope of making a new life in America. In Japan, Kuniyoshi had studied at a school for weaving and learned traditional Japanese decorative arts and how to draw. While attending public high school in Los Angeles, a teacher told him that he had artistic talent. He worked a series of odd jobs from picking fruit in the field to working as a hotel bellhop while attending the Los Angeles School of Art and Design. Eventually, he moved to New York and continued his studies in art.
Kuniyoshi’s time in the U.S. coincides with the spread of anti-immigrant sentiment throughout the country, from the eugenics movement to the Immigration Act of 1924, which drastically cut the number of new immigrants allowed annually and practically banned all immigration from East Asia. In 1919, Kuniyoshi married an American woman, Kathrine Schmidt, for which her parents disowned her and did not speak to the couple for six years. His Boy Stealing Fruit (1923) may be interpreted as “an allegory of the marriage, where a sly boy sneaks a juicy peach from a distinctly “early Americana” bowl.” (E. Brown: pp. 12) His sense of fear, perhaps from anti-immigrant sentiment, may be felt in his other works such as Boy Frightened by Snake (1921-1922) and Child frightened by Water (1924).
Stay tuned for the Part II of Kuniyoshi’s life and career.

Happy memorial day! I drew my grandparents in honor of their lives. My grandpa was part of the military and helped with the reconstruction of Japan after world war 2. That's where he met my grandmother and they fell in love. After his service they moved to America to start their lives together. They faced many hardships in their lives but strived to make the world a better place. While I may not look very Japanese, I love my heritage and honor their sacrifices. They are missed! #japaneseamerican #asianamericanheritagemonth https://www.instagram.com/p/CPjcvHPDI9U/?utm_medium=tumblr

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS
Tumblr media
— I tend the flowers of my mind, watering our memories as they bloom -   Richard Ratliff Thank you Kevin for coming to me with this amazing project. You have a good head on your shoulders and with every session we had some really deep + engaging conversations that not only confronted us with the uncomfortable, but made us critically think about how does an individual serve their purpose to the part of the whole. It is nice to see that there are changes that is happening in the world and it gives me faith. It is time to embrace and to acknowledge the change and for us to show ourselves and others compassion and to heal as a collective. Congratulations on attaining your BA and now onto your Masters Program, I commend you on your journey. ✨ This is @kxv_n story : “ Mental health is not talked about enough, especially in Asian American communities. I find that oftentimes, we fear judgment from others and learned social cues to conceal our feelings; in turn, we don't create a culture in which we can understand our feelings and emotions along with having safe spaces to disclose and process our lived experiences. For my mental health experiences, it has been hard living up to the immigrant burden and doing my parents proud with them being Vietnamese refugee immigrants. With the added guilt of being a cancer survivor and needing to hide my identity due to being gay, I placed a lot of pressure on myself to achieve excellence and "save face". Life has been better now that I have been able to reflect and understand my identities, and I have been working on presenting myself authentically and rebuilding bridges with my parents. The complications of life are vast and giving people space to be listened to and understood is a beautiful gift that anyone can provide for another. “ SYMBOLISM : WHITE LILLIES ;  symbolize a rejuvenation of the soul. They can represent purity, commitment and rebirth, Sympathy Flowers. (;) used as a message of affirmation and solidarity against suicide, depression, addiction, and other mental health issues.

Joanna Gaines is a tv host, interior designer, author & CEO. You may know her & her hubby, Chip, for starring on “Fixer Upper”. Their company, Magnolia, is an empire that includes a construction/design company, discount store, 2 restaurants & coffee shop, real estate firm, a Target & Anthropologie line, a magazine, cookbooks, 2 bed & breakfasts AND their own cable network?! It will premiere in October 2020. She was born in Wichita, Kansas. Her dad is #Lebanese & #German. Her mom is #Korean. They met in Korea, while her dad was serving overseas during Vietnam. None of their parents approved so they went to Vegas & got married & had 3 kids. They moved around a lot which was difficult "when kids started noticing that I didn't look like they did. In those first couple of years in elementary school, kids started picking on me because of it." The lunchroom bullying was so bad that she packed her lunch & ate in bathroom stalls before she eventually found a safe place with a smaller group of kids. “I thought, ‘How do people do this? How do you find that one person to sit with?’. So i hid so I wouldn’t be rejected.” When her Korean grandmother came to live with them it brought even more attention to her diverse family. “Kids in kindergarten would make fun of me for being #Asian & when you're that age you don't know how to process that. I thought, ‘Who I am isn't good enough.'" She felt more confident in high school & was voted as homecoming queen! “That same year, I started to think consciously about what it meant to be half-Korean. I thought, 'I'm either white, Korean, or both, but I've got to own this. It's me.' I started to see how beautiful my mom's culture was, how beautiful she was & I wanted people to know she was different & unique. I didn't want to be embarrassed about that." Today, she teaches her 6 kids to identify & connect with isolated peers. “I say look out for the lonely, the sad, the people who aren't confident, because that's not where they're supposed to stay." 🇱🇧🇰🇷🇩🇪 #aapi #aapiheritagemonth #beautytuesday #mixedgirl #asianamericanheritagemonth https://www.instagram.com/p/CAGsuQAFmyw/?igshid=1gm8bg9nf0lf6

so this was a pretty long wait but I finished a piece for the @antholegacies zine I was part of and can now upload it! • I did my piece on being a transracial adoptee and having my Chinese heritage praised or taken away from me due to not being “Asian enough” to my Asian American community and my non-Asian peers and friends. The piece itself was pretty grueling and took a long time to ever really be happy with it but here we are! • #art #illustration #asianamericanheritagemonth #digitalart #digitalillustration #instaartist #instaart #procreate #transracialadoptee #chineseamerican #asianamericanheritage https://www.instagram.com/p/ByFavD1jYmd/?igshid=13u6dcs3obif6

I can not stand by and just watch injustice. I'm so honored to have such amazing friends like @withlovedivya and @anjalirimi (amongst so many other beautiful souls) who are doing the work for our communities.
