After a while all the Mechanisms forget who they were before. For many of them, all they have left are their songs, and none of them can remember how much is truth and how much is simply a story.

Tim only has the vaguest hints of memories of what it felt like to spend time with Bertie, a gentle hand brushing his hair from his face, a flutter inside his chest, but he can't even remember what Bertie looked like anymore.

Jonny can't remember what his father was like any more, though he is certain he killed him. While he remembers pulling the trigger in a flash of devastated rage, he can't remember where the bullet ended up. Did Jack ever exist? Or was he a representation of multiple people, or was the killing of Jack simply an expression of the themes of the story? Or maybe he can't face the truth of what really happened. Jonny claims One Eyed Jacks tells us how he got his mechanical heart but it doesn't, not really. Maybe there never was anyone else in the room with him and he shot himself, right through the heart, in a fit of maddened guilt and grief.

Brian will never ever forget the endless black and the terrible cold seeping deep into his bones, though he has long since forgotten what his own face used to look like.

Ashes knows their song must be dramatised since the song claims that their skin burned, but only their lungs were mechanised, so they must have died simply of smoke inhalation. They can also no longer remember if they really were a level-headed detective as they were in the song, or if they simply died in an arson attack gone wrong, and destroyed their whole world, along with everyone they ever cared about, over a mistake.

Raphaella has no song to hang onto, no story to tell, and her past is long since forgotten. Though the stench of the city feels far too familiar, and she flinches when the name Icarus is spoken, though she could not tell you why.

thinking about how, now, both brothers have been and remember being killed by someone they love

Rae pushed Icarus off a cliff, letting them fall to their death. Fenris killed Rae, he died of his injuries. Thinking about how both brothers were saved by their respective parent - one in a way so destructive and *loud* it destroyed the stability of the world, and one in a way so quiet you wouldn't even know it happened unless you got told.

thinking about how their respective parents have such different views of their children - to Enderian, Rae was a heretic and then he wasn't but he also wasn't a son, and then - finally - he was a son. To Fable, Icarus is his child - his son - but they're disposable. If they do wrong he can lock them away, if they say something he disagrees with - they're no longer Icarus, if they have something he wants, he'll kill them. Thinking about how diffrent the way Enderian and Fable call their sons' 'son' - Enderian desperate and pleading - she needs her son alive, she needs him to *live*; Fable harsh and approving and *proud* - he needs to keep Icarus close, and he needs them to know he's proud and happy to call them his son.

I’ve seen people have mixed opinions on flight of Icarus and I’m like scared to purchase it now lol.

Mainly because whoever wrote the book clearly didn’t like how Eddie was portrayed in the show which I find really weird and jarring just from what I’ve seen or heard about the book but then again I have been trying to stay mostly free of content cause if I do get it I don’t want much spoilers. (I’ve seen one or two things though) I think a lot of fans/the fandom see Eddie as the fun metal head loving nerd that Joe portrayed him as. As well as people carrying that throughout fics too.

To hear him as essentially portrayed as a Billy 2.0 is….disappointing. And a little unimaginative, imo. It just feels like it’s portraying a certian archetype that people associate with goths/metal heads at the time. When most of them are actually really nice people, they just like weird shit.

And I know people can change and become humble, but from what I have heard you can’t make that drastic of a characteristic leap in the timeline if that was considered true canon. which a lot of people don’t take it as such and I think I’m hopping on that bandwagon.

Not to mention, I don’t usually like reading books set in first perspective often due to my own personal preference.

But again I don’t know much about the book so I can’t make too many snap decisions about it without reading it but from what I’ve seen…not wowed about it which makes me nervous to even try and read it.

ok in your fanfic you mentioned Marius can’t read, is that canon or fanon or???

Had to ask @rainbowstargazerlilies about this, cause she started using it in her Lyf fic and I just nabbed it from her

Apparently it’s fanon! The idea is that he’s able to read his home planet’s language, but has refused to learn how to read or write any others.

I believe in the Lyf fic it’s mentioned that he also refuses to teach his native language to any of the other mechs (which may play into some plot points later on >:D)

#I genuinely couldnt remember where this idea sprouted #not sure how I conceive of language and how the mechs approach it yet #is there a common universal type language that they use? #that wouldn’t make sense cause most of the places they sing about haven’t developed travel on that scale #and even something like that would change over time #probably on the aurora they’ve developed a mishmash of languages #English style but even more piratey #I imagine with a good chunk of English since that’s what Tim #ts #and presumably Jonny all spoke #but with common phrases from cyber Ian and whatever languages ashes and Ivy and Brian grew up with sprinkled in #raph and marius joined later on #i picture the city as a human colony in the far far future that got out of hand so raph would have a leg up on the English #just to make things easier #and marius had a steep learning curve adjusting from space German to the mechs language #of course I didn’t think about any of this while writing the icarus fic #so it isn’t mentioned at all in there #but it might be discussed at length in the upcoming Ivy/Raphaella sequel #you have started my brain gears a-turning #the mechanisms #the mechs
