Having a smol crisis over how tall some of the Obey Me cast is...

I recall reading somewhere that Luci is 6'3", just to give a point of comparison. Also read somewhere before that Luke is supposed to be 5'2"?? EXCUSE ME??

And then I see this gem:

and realize that FUCK IT'S TRUE. I'M THE SAME HEIGHT AS LUKE. Like, if Barb really is that tall (estimating 6'2") then my 5'2" ass will look like THIS standing next to him.

Which makes this NB dialogue so much funnier...

YEAH. NO SHIT. OF COURSE LUKE FEELS BETTER WITH ME IN THE KITCHEN CUZ I NEED A FUCKING STOOL TOO, APPARENTLY....

Just imagining having to do everything using a stool now. Also imagining how fucking big the Devildom furniture would be. If I, at a reasonable 5'2", need a stool to comfortably prep food at the kitchen counter, then how big are the chairs? The tables? The couches...??

Here’s a fun Barbatos thought for the fandom…

We know Barbatos has timey wimey powers and has been around since practically the beginning of the Devildom.

He’s technically a demon, but his abilities allow him to be separate from time.

So….

Does Barbatos have a life candle of his own? Or is he timeless, since he can literally exist outside of the timelines?

And if he DOES have a candle of his own, does it gradually diminish like the others, or does it remain unchanging? Because it’s not like he can’t be killed; his candle could be snuffed out.

But will it ever RUN out?

And if it doesn’t run out…

….what would happen if he were to pour some of his candle wax onto a mortal’s?

What would happen to MC if they’re given just a drop of his timeless immortality?

Thinking about how adorably awkward Diavolo is, but also how sad he is too. This guy grew up super isolated with a father that neglected him, a “friend” that was obligated to play with him and cater to his every whim, and essentially raised by an ancient time demon that he “bullied” into serving him.

This poor guy has never ever had a single person be around him/with him by choice. Imagine what that does to him, to his self-esteem. The only one who has been with him by choice is Barbatos, but every now and then, Diavolo will doubt even that much, considering how he had “forced” him into serving him when he was younger (logically he knows Barbatos could have refused him; he was powerful enough to… but even then, the doubt lingers).

On top of that, he’s trying to join the three realms in a peaceful way, which I would guess not everyone in the Devildom is okay with.

Even when the angels fell, and Lucifer requested his help, Diavolo did it on the condition that Lucifer (and by proxy his brothers) serve him and the Devildom. Because even though they may have been somewhat friends (remember Diavolo planted an apple tree for Lucifer when he was still an angel), Diavolo had to act as a prince first, setting his own personal desires aside. His help would come at a price.

Everything he does is so motivated by this deep-rooted loneliness, forced by his position and power, and the choices he has to make because of it, keeping him isolated from others.

This persistent isolation and always being served by others has left a huge deficit in his people/relationship skills. The wild shit he says or does when interacting with those he cares about isn’t even intended to cross boundaries or rile them up half the time. He genuinely means it in the most innocent way. He hasn’t exactly learned what’s appropriate and what’s not appropriate (after all, the only friend he had was Mephisto, who worships the ground he walks on and never tells him no to anything). So he’s learning that now, albeit a bit late. He really just gets an idea that sounds nice in his head, inspired by his love and respect for that person, and says it out loud in an effort to deepen his relationship (ie, friendship) with them. And fortunately for him, Lucifer is able to be patient enough with him and maintain those boundaries as he figures out all of the nuances of socially and culturally acceptable communication and relationship building.

That’s not to say that there aren’t times where Diavolo doesn’t say or do things on purpose with the intent of giving others a hard time. He’ll definitely say things to get under Lucifer’s skin; he likes to fluster him, and for Diavolo, even bad attention is better than no attention. But I think there’s also another purpose to it, albeit subconsciously, in that it allows him to experience healthy boundaries which he never had when he was younger. Lucifer has no problem saying no to him, even at times when Barbatos doesn’t (Barbatos is strict, but he’ll also dote on Diavolo at times too, in a motherly way). It allows Diavolo to feel equal with Lucifer, more friends/comrades than ruler/oath-bound servant.

It’s also the same reason (partially) why he tries to escape his work half the time, or will come up with wild ideas that Barbatos has to say no to. He likes pushing (just a little) against the boundaries placed by others in order to meet that resistance. In a weird way it’s how he knows that they genuinely care about him rather than simply serve him out of obligation. They tell him no when he needs to hear it, but they’re also forgiving.

He’s always known he’s not perfect, yet he was treated like he was for so long. It created a dissonance between who he was told he was versus how he was experiencing himself. Now, he’s allowed to experience, understand, and accept his own imperfections through those closest to him and how they respond to him when they maintain their boundaries. It validates his own self perception of being imperfect while also allowing room for growth and understanding that the imperfections are acceptable/allowed to be there.

I think the last lingering doubt of others’ genuine love for him is the fact that they literally cannot leave him, at least not without consequences. Sure, they can disagree, even fight him. But in the end, he’s the prince, and they’re bound to him by duty and oaths. If they weren’t bound, would they still stay and continue to be there for him? Or are they merely tolerating him? It’s an insecurity that still plagues him.

Anyway… not sure where I was going with this. Brain is just stuck ruminating on it. He’s such an interesting character, I love him so much.

Realizing that I forgot my most important Barbatos headcanon which is....

He can view others' past and futures, but he's unable to see his own if it hasn't happened yet (bear with me, because the timey wimey stuff makes it complicated and hard to explain).

It's because he's removed from time in a way that others aren't. It's the same reason he didn't realize the consequences of his reckless actions when he was younger until they'd already happened and he saw how it had impacted Diavolo and Solomon. He's his own wild card.

Now he's trying to fix his past mistakes, repair the damage that had been done and forge a path to a better future. This future is one that he can't see quite clearly yet, because it's a new set of decisions and consequences. He can see the overall results, especially when he focus on the others and their own decisions. But when it comes to trying to focus on himself in this new future? It's elusive; it's there and yet he's unable to focus directly on it, and the clear predictably of the future becomes hazy and unfocused.

It's the reason why he's often preferring to be the observer, the side character, and also the puppeteer, moving others into position when it's deemed necessary (e.g., Diavolo tells him to).

So when he's faced with making a big decision that can have a huge impact on the course that he wants (i.e., repairing the damage he did, ensuring Diavolo's future, etc.), he freezes up, internally panics.

It's one of the many reasons why he resists falling for MC, because he knows they are such a vital part of the course that's been laid out. To tamper with it, especially for selfish reasons, is entirely out of the question for him.

Ok apparently the height of the obey me characters is my hyperfixation for today. Don't ask why, I don't make the rules here.

SO... I was looking at this canon pic again:

and I got to thinking: what is the typical kitchen counter height?

Google tells me it's 36" which converts to roughly 91.5 cm.

Let's take a look on the height chart:

Okay, hmm.. interesting... Barb (who I have listed as 6'2" here) looks taller than this shows. It looks as if his groin/butt would start just above the counter. So is he taller than 6'2"?

(Let's ignore the fact that the counter being at Luke's waist matches the counter at MY waist... little dude really is 5'2".)

BUT WAIT. My American is showing. Obey Me is made in Japan.

So what is the standard counter height in modern Japanese kitchens?

Google tells me it's 85cm (that's roughly 33.5 in freedom units).

So let's adjust...

Okay, so it's a little bit lower, but not by much. But I do think the japanese counter height fits the obey me pic more than the American counter height (which, y'know, makes sense).

So, there you have it... take with it what you will. It really does seem Luke could be 5'2" (begrudgingly) and if that's the case, then it seems Barbatos may be 6'2" (188 cm) or 6'3" (190.5 cm).

Granted, you can always say that the Devildom has their own standards for counter heights, so it's all speculation anyway... 😉

What if Sol thinks his cooking is good because he was unknowingly cursed at some point in his sketchy sorcerer career for slighting someone/causing mischief and he never realized it? Like to him, the food looks normal and tastes great, whereas everyone else is getting a TOTALLY different experience (in reality).

An alternative theory I have is that he's always mixing up food ingredients from the different realms which you are Not Supposed To Do. But our immortal lil' sorcerer has been around for so long, and he's gotten bored of the usual fare.
