Two Full Moons
I recently rewatched both of the PS movies and I gotta say, the dialogues are just INCREDIBLE.
i don't know if anyone else has noticed it, but there's such a clever play on words when Nandini and Kundavai have their exchange when Kundavai enters the Thanjavur Fortress.
The conversation goes: Nandini: Welcome Princess, your arrival has beautified the whole of Thanjai's fortress.
Kundavai: I've heard that you have collected and kept all of the beauty in the fortress.
When you watch it for the first time, it looks like it's just clever conversation between two smart and sharp women. But wait. Who in the story is described as being so beautiful, that their NAME was altered to celebrate it? Kundavai's father, Sundara Chozhar. Kundavai and Nandini are indirectly talking about how HER father, the King of the Chola Empire, has basically been imprisoned in the fortress.
The conversation continues,
Nandini: Yes, beauty is kept captive here.
Kundavai: Captive? I thought it was seated on a Golden Throne.
Nandini: Yes, but it is old gold.
Kundavai: The older the gold, the more respected.
Nandini: Even if it is made of gold, shackles are shackles.
Kundavai: The key to those shackles are in my hands.
Nandini is taunting Kundavai here, talking about how her father is old and cannot do anything to resist becoming a puppet of the Pazhuvettarayars. He has no freedom. It doesn't matter that he's a King with a luxurious palace and everything he needs a beck and call away, he's still under the thumbs of the Pazhuvettarayars.
Kundavai has a befitting reply of course. It doesn't matter that her father is basically under house arrest. She, Kundavai, being a Princess of the land has much more power than the Pazhuverttarayar brothers. She has the power to release her father from their control. She still has more power than Nandini.
It's such a clever way to show how Nandini and Kundavai hate each other, to the very core. It looks like a fun, teasing conversation but in reality, both insulting each other in the worst way possible.

In Memoriam
This is my first try at Vanmozhi Fanfiction. Inspired from the PS 2 movie scene. Planning to do a two part follow-up of this prologue. Let me know what you think!
Prologue
'Tis better to have loved and lost Than never to have loved at all.’ (In Memoriam A. H. H., 27.13-17)
The sky of Thanjavur was strangely grey on a Vaikasi afternoon as the people waited for their beloved crown prince, Aditha Karikalan, to come home.
Only this time, there was no line of excited girls, wearing their best sarees,  chattering away with their aarti thali on the steps of majestic Thanjavur fort, waiting to catch a glimpse of their handsome  prince.
Instead, a grief-stricken royal family waited patiently. Chakrvarthi and the young prince, Ponniyin Selvan were waiting at the front, while the women of the royal family waited behind.
Slightly behind the royal family, Kodombalur Ilavarasi Vanathi was also waiting along with other royal women, looking over the sea of the people that gathered at the outer court of the fort. Since last night, as the news of the prince’s death spread, people kept coming from all corners of the Cholanadu.
While Vanathi waited, she thought of everything and nothing.
Such a contrast, Vanathi reflected, looking at the grey sky briefly before her gaze settled on the royal family who were clad in pristine white, a decorum when someone in the family passes away.
As if even the sky was mourning along with this family.
Vanathi’s thoughts got interrupted as people’s clamour suddenly increased, making her focus at the entry gate of the fort.
Finally, Aditha Karikalan had arrived in Thanjavur.
In the city where he grew up. In the city where he belongs.
A long procession of regiment came by foot, closely followed by the prince's beloved horse regiment, waving the chola flag.
From where she was standing, Vanathi could  see the chariot carrying the prince’s body from a distance, closely flanked by his trusted fighting companions, Manamalyan, Parthibendran and Vanthiyadevan; not leaving their beloved prince’s side, even in death.
As the chariot slowly moved across the crowd, Vanathi could hear muffled cries while some people started to shower flower petals at the chariot, a sign of their last respect to their Ilavarase. A section of the crowd even started to tussle with the guards to touch the chariot and pray.
It took a long time for the guards to clear the way for the chariot to cross the short distance of the entry gate to the steps of the fort.
When the chariot carrying the prince's body finally stopped in front of the fort stairs, there was a momentary pause among the royal family members.
As if they could not believe what they were seeing.
The ailing Chakravarty was the first to break down as he could not support his weight anymore. Ponniyin Selvan gripped his father tightly, making sure his father could come down the stairs to meet his beloved elder son.
Raṇi varataṭcaṇai Sembiyan Mahadevi, Rani Vanavan Mahadevi, Iliya Piratti slowly started to walk behind the Chakravarty to meet their nephew, son and brother, Aditha Karikalan, one last time. Vanathi followed them as well, her steps heavy with grief.
As everyone in the family huddled at the front of the chariot and tried to caress the beloved prince’s face, the cries of the Chakravarti and Rani were the most heart-breaking.  Vanathi, who was standing at the end of the chariot, could not take it anymore. She bowed her head, closed her eyes to drown out the sound of cries and desperately put her hands together in prayer.
Ishvara, may the Ilavarase join you in heaven. And…And give my beloved royal family and the people of Cholanadu the strength to overcome this difficult time.
Vanathi stayed still for a few minutes, hoping the cries had subdued. As she opened her eyes, she knew that her attempt at focusing on praying was futile.
But she had to try.
In desperation, her eyes searched for the only face that could give her strength at this moment.
As her eyes landed on Ponniyin Selvan’s face, Vanathi realized, despite being such a pillar of strength to his father, the young prince could not hold himself together anymore.
His face contorted with unspeakable grief; tears were streaming down his eyes continuously.
Vanathi had endured loss in various forms from a very young age. Her mother’s death, even though she had never met her, had left a deep wound in her childhood. Then her father’s death at Ilankai war, leaving her as an orphan in this cruel world. Then bidding farewell to her only father like figure uncle Periya Velar before every war, not knowing whether he would return alive from them was always tantamount to loss for her….Yet, no pain of these losses compared to the pain of seeing her beloved Ponniyin Selvan grieving at this moment.
Until this point, Vanathi did not realize that she had been crying along with everyone else. But seeing her Ponniyin Selvan break down like this, fresh tears blocked her vision completely. Her heart felt so heavy that for a moment she felt like she could not breathe anymore.
Wiping her tears with pallu, Vanathi took a few deep breaths to calm herself.
As the guards started to move to take the chariot away for cremation, on a whim, Vanathi decided to come at the front of the chariot and touch Ilavarase Aditha Karikalan’s feet, seeking blessings.
An opportunity she never had before.
While she looked at the crown prince’s resting face one last time, Vanathi realized, in death, Aditha Karikalan had finally found his peace.
The peace that he had been searching for a long time.

Fanfiction prompt: Someone advises Vanathi to be vary of Kundavai
Does Vanathi know the complete history of Kundavai and Nandini?
When they first met, Kundavai was so jealous of Nandini and called her owl-faced and bullied her. She didn't like her brothers interracting with her. But after Aditha Karikalan left for a battle, she and Nandini became best friends. When Karikalan returned after two years, he observed that Nandini's expensive clothes and jewellery were gifted by Kundavai. Nandini was shy to talk to him as in the old times but he seeked her out and both fell for each other, which angered Kundavai. Even at the end, she considered Nandini a gold-digger who pursued Veera Pandyan and her brother.
Has Vanathi ever imagined the consequences of offending her Kundavai akka in some manner? If she wasn't the Kodumbaloor princess but just another orphan girl like Nandini, she wouldn't have been considered to even dust Arulmozhi's sandals. Kundavai starts dreaming about the lost opportunity to end Chola-Pandya war by conducting Nandini-Aditha Karikalan marriage after she learns that she could have been Veera Pandyan's daughter.
Maybe it is one of the disgruntled girls in Kundavai's retuine who tells Vanathi that her position isn't as enviable as she thinks. How will Vanathi react? Will she find solace in the fact that she is actually a princess with the backing of a powerful clan and doesn't have to worry about hypothetical scenarios?

Would he be different if his white flower chose him? Would he still be restless if his love had not been abolished from the land? Would he still be dead if his love touched his heart with her hands instead of a sword?
The death that caused a turn in history, the death that made Ponniyin Selvan into 'Raja Raja Chozhan'
Tumblr media
ArunMozhi Varma aka Ponniyin Selvan aka Raja Raja Chozhan

The prince who never meant to be a king, the king who rose to achieve the greatest, the king who soared through the sea to capture the kingdoms, the king who roared enough to be heard all through.
He is kind, he is charming, he is lovable, he is the Prince, and at last, he is the King. What more can you ask in a person and one that captured the heart of the Kadambur princess and held her hand in marriage.

Kannalane Chapter 5: Rupturing of Hearts
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A/N: heavy angst
It was well late into the night when Nandini was woken up by the knocking on the door. She glanced at the still sleeping Kaveri and Ananda before watching her father open the door while rubbing his eyes. Immediately three soldiers badged in with drawn swords in their hands. "Sooryanarayanan" One of them said in a deep menacing voice. "Gather your belongings. You are being displaced". "What?" Sooryanarayanan said, half in disbelief and half in protest "What do you mean? Why are we being dragged out like this?" The soldier raised his sword "Who are you to question me? Just do as you are being told and you can keep your life. Otherwise we'll throw all your bodies into river Ponni". Nandini grabbed her father's arm, and she felt someone tug on her clothes and understood that Kaveri has also woken up. "Go pack" Sooryanarayanan said finally "But I want to know on whose orders are being treated this way. What crime have we done?" His question to the armed soldiers went unanswered as they were busy trying not to make any sounds that might wake up the neighbours. But Nandini had a realisation of what could have caused this unexpected visit. A certain elderly woman and her cold stare flashed through her mind but she couldn't bring herself to beleive it. Oh Krishna! Let that not be the case. Please let this be some sort of misunderstanding and everything go back to the way it was. She silently prayed as she tied up her bundle of clothes. Sooryanarayanan put a sleepy Ananda on his shoulders and climbed into the bullock cart that the soldiers indicated to along with his daughters, mumbling about how he would try to consult the king and bring this injustice to light. But Nandini couldn't join him in his affirmation because the reality of things was dawning upon her. "Akka" she heard Kaveri call her and turned "We are being told to go because you fell in love with him aren't we?" Kaveri whispered so that their father couldn't hear the words. Her voice held no hatred, just a tinge of sadness in not seeing her friends anymore and moreover not seeing her family in their previous bliss. Nandini thought back to how she wouldn't be able to see Vishaka anymore. Nor any more of her enjoying the peace of the Banyan tree. Nor any more horse ride with a boy she has come to love with all her heart. She held Kaveri close, failing to keep the tears from escaping.
****************************************
Vishaka stared at the burnt down house of her Sakhi. The news that spread was how the house of Sooryanarayanan was robbed and how the house was set on fire with the inhabitants perishing with it. By the time the neighbours took note of the flames and smoke and put out the fire, it had turned into ashes. Everyone believed that the family died and mourned their loss. But Vishaka wasn't able to believe it. She had her suspicions - Why didn't they hear any commotion or any screaming? She thought back to how Nandini narrated her meeting with Aditha's family and especially about Patti's hot and cold behaviour towards her. Although Nandini accepted the explanation of Aditha's, that some people generally have a strict demeanor and Patti was one of those people. But Vishaka was unable to digest the fact easily. She have heard stories of how girls from lower influencial families are intimidated and threatened to withdraw from any relationship they might have with boys from aristocratic families. She was afraid for the safety of her best friend and resolved to make Nandini see sense the next morning but apparently she was too late. She sat in the ground in front of the burnt house with Suseel supporting her weight as silent tears ran down her cheeks. Amidst the chaos of people enquiring and grieving, she saw a familiar face - a shocked and confused Aditha.
"Look what you have done! " She screamed at him, and Aditha looked at her helplessly "You have destroyed a girl's life along with her family just because she fell victim to your false affections"
Suseel squeezed her shoulders, noticing the crowd whispering to each other, "Vishaka, stop accusing people like Aditha without any evidence. You'll get in trouble "
Aditha approached her by now, "I don't know…." He began to say in a feeble voice, face overwhelmed with grief
"Go and ask your family" Vishaka hissed at him "And if what we see today is your family's doing then then I curse you with unhappiness. You won't be merry by destroying the dreams of a girl that you encouraged endlessly"
Suseel assumed that Aditha was going to shout back at Vishaka or order her imprisonment for allegedly accusing him but all he saw was Aditha getting on his horse and rushing out of the crowd.
********************************************
Shivarama was getting ready to go to court when an angry Aditha stormed into his chamber "I am sorry for intruding like this Appa" he said "But I need to know something right at this moment"
"Aditha" He heard Adithi Devi come towards him "What is all this noise? Come, have something to eat"
"No Amma" He said impatiently " I want to know what fault you saw in Nandini that you dared to do such a degrading act"
"Aditha" Shivarama's voice thundered inside the chamber "I have told you never to accuse someone before knowing all the facts. What are you insinuating?"
Aditha narrated what happened to Nandini's family and their house.
"Oh Shiva!" Adithi said exclaimed, with a hand on her heart "And you think we are capable of committing such a cruel act?"
"I don't know!" Aditha said exasperated "But I do know that they aren't dead. I can feel it. They are alive. She is alive and I'll search and find her"
"Impossible!" He turned around to see Mrinalini Devi " I didn't undergo this much trouble just so you can find her and bring her back"
Adithi Devi gasped while Shivarama and Aditha stared at the elderly woman
"Patti, what did you do?" He asked in disbelief, that the Patti he knew who told him stories of brave kings and warriors, and always told him to follow his heart was capable of stomping on it.
"What a mature person who cares about her family ought to do" Mrinalini Devi stood her ground. "I understand your infatuation with this girl but what good would a priest's daughter be? Say the word and I'll present more beautiful and wealthy girls from all over Choza Nadu"
"No one can hold a candle to my Nandini "
"You think I am heartless?"
"I think you are underestimating my love"
"Foolish child!" Mrinalini shouted "Although I don't know where they are now, go and search to your heart's desire. The day you'll bring her in front of me again will be the day I'll acknowledge the depth of the love that you profess. I'll do aarti and welcome her as this family's daughter in law myself" saying this she left the chamber, leaving behind a determined looking Aditha and a baffled Adithi and Shivarama.
***********************************
The family of Sooryanarayanan was at a changing point in their lives. The soldiers dropped them off at the outskirts of Choza Nadu. For the rest of the night, they took shelter under a tree. In the morning they travelled to Pandiya Nadu and entered a forest where they saw an abandoned Hut and decided to take shelter there. Sooryanarayanan secured a position as a poojari in the nearby temple but he kept a low profile. He still didn't understood why there were exiled from their homeland but he had a feeling that even if he protest against it, he might lose as there seemed to be an invisible influential force acting behind their displacement. He often discussed this with his eldest daughter. "Listen Nandini" He said one day to her "I am growing weak. I may not be able to see all of you grow up and succeed in life. But promise me you'll take care of yourself and your siblings and never let anyone lead your mind to corruption"
Nandini promised him but deep inside she felt her mind was already corrupted with guilt. The fact that her decision to fall in love with Aditha and dared to dream of a secure future with him was the reason they were living as refugees in a strange land. She could no longer hide this truth from her father and so one night when her brother and sister were asleep, she decided to confide in her father.
Sooryanarayanan listened to her with surprising patience and continued to think deeply. He was jolted to present when he felt Nandini touch his feet. "Forgive me Appa" She said amidst crying. He asked her to be seated near him and turned her face towards him.
"Kanne, thank you for confessing to me" He began "But never apologise for falling in love. God has created humans with the sole purpose of propagating the message that one should love and care for each other at all times. Isn't it the society that has created Kings and aristocrats and priest's out of ordinary human beings? Strip off all the crown and the silk clothes and the Pooja thaalis and there'll be nothing to distinguish one human from another. All are same. If what happened to our family was in reality instrumented by Mrinalini Devi, then isn't it evidence that we are so obsessed with status and power that we simply fail to recognise abstract ideas such as love and kindness?"
Nandini couldn't stop her tears as she realised how compassionate and understanding her father is. Sooryanarayanan held his dear first born daughter close.
"If you trust that Shivarama's son doesn't believe in social construct and will do anything in his power to reverse his family's action then kepp hoping in your love. Because without love we will only be a shell of flesh and bones. If you don't beleive so, then forget him, Kanne"
*****************************************
To be continued…..
Chapter 6 Promo:
"Oh Devi" Aditha saw the woman slowly turn around towards them. He was about to ask the way towards the city but the words seemed to be stuck in his throat as he stared at the woman in front of him. He would have recognised those eyes anywhere, the eyes that he searched and haunted him for 7 long years. And the Chempaka flower that was tucked in her hair bun. The woman also stared back at him, at first with confusion at his sudden appearance then with caution at his armour and weapon and at last locked eyes with him, where her eyes widened with shock and confirmed his suspicions.
"Chempaka" he whispered and watched the pot of water slip from her hands and fall to the ground.

Away | Nandini x Aaditya Karaikal
Nandini jolted up from her sleep. She usually remembered how her Karikalan had proposed to live far away, and after much negotiation they really had ran away. That day two dead bodies were found. A male and a female. Those burnt bodies were then identified as Aditya Karikalan and Nandini. In reality they were bodies of 2 pandian rebels. To the world they were dead. They had ran away, took a boat, headed to one of the islands of Singhala, and built their small world along side a beach.
They were quite secluded from the kingdoms, their politics, everything. They were able to get information on what was happening in the Chozha kingdom by the messengers which used to visit the island.
Nandini tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. She looked out of the window of their hut and saw that it was still a bit dark outside. She kept her hand towards her right where her Karikalan usually slept. To her shock the bed side was empty. She quickly got up. Karikalan hadn't told her if he was going to go out. And at this hour..... She started to get concerned.
"Adhitha! , ADHITHA!! " She shouted with all her might. Their hut was small with only three rooms. After checking the whole freaking house, she finally came outside. Their house was a little far away from the beach, surrounded by tall trees, with a splendid view of the beach from the front door. "ADHITHA!
Just then someone knocked on her shoulders. She quickly turned around. It was her Adhitha, he was holding some freshly collected fruits and vegetables in a pouch. He had a mischievous smile on his face. By seeing him smile, she quickly started to punch the hell out of him.
" Ouch, ouch-Nandini - plea-ouch stop it"
"Now what? The brave tiger is feeling pain from such petty punches" Nandini said anger shone in her eyes. Karikalan just looked in her eyes and started to laugh like a madman, taking Nandini in a tight embrace. She stoped saying whatever she was and simply melted in his embrace.
"Just... Don't leave me without notice. You don't know how worried I had been. "
"I am sorry sakhie, but I wanted to surprise you. " He said. He loosened his and looked at his beloved Nandini. He had to wait soo many years to be in this position. Living a peaceful life away from the kings and politics, with the love of his life Nandini.
"Come, sit here. "
They both sat on the deck on their house. Their legs were hanging in air. Cold breezes swaying them. They were eating the berries Karikalan had collected for them, enjoying each other's company.
Nandini rested her head on Karikalan's shoulder. "This is life, ain't it? " Nandini asked. Karikalan just hmm'd.

if the characters of ponniyin selvan were to be in a modern-day indian high school, what personalities do you think they'd have?
here's my take:
aditha karikalan - 12th grade, the overacheiver, good at everything he does, kinda wild, the sorta person who can get piss drunk the day before but still get a 100 on a test the next day, very respected but unapproachable, is involved in literally every society but is particularly interested in sports and chess
vandiyathevan - 12th grade, charming and friendly, very popular, mischievous, gets into trouble a lot but none of it is serious, students love him, teachers like him too but gotta be strict bc he plays too many pranks, in the literature society
kundavai - 11th grade, also good at everything she does, much friendlier than her brother, respected by both students and teachers, the senior you go to when you got a problem bc she just gives the best advice, not too much into physical activities but amazing at debate, MUN's and quizzes
nandini - 11th grader, quiet, mysterious transfer student who hides her intelligence, the girl who will claim to fail but will actually pass with 99%, competitive, hates losing, always achieves her goals, in the chess, tennis and debate societies, good at all of them
arulmozhi - 9th grade, innocent, sweet and helpful, people usually cannot believe he's aditha's brother, doesn't do as well as his siblings in academics because he already knows he's not interested in it, very creative, is part of all artistic societies, is best at poetry and music
vanathi - 9th grade, shy and a little awkward, isn't really good at socializing but is the most animated one when she's with her friends, is fairly good at academics but her real passion is classical dance, in the dance society, almost always plays krishna in their dances
poonguzhali - 10th grader, the "weird" one, quiet, a little unapproachable and eccentric, she usually scares of people who try to talk to her, to her few friends she is wise and thoughtful, doesn't really enjoy academics or other school activities, loves swimming, is secretly an amazing singer but will not sing for anyone
sendhan amudhan - 10th grader, the teacher's pet but you can't hate him because he is literally a golden retriever, topper-in-training, isn't interested in after school societies but he loves going to the library and reading history books, passionate about social justice, spends his weekends volunteering at various charitable organizations
some headcannons:
kundavai and nandini have a fierce rivalry. they cannot stand it when one of them does better than the other. it's usually entertaining but when things get too intense aditha and vandiyathevan have to restrain them so they don't bite each other's heads off.
no one knows where nandini goes after school. she spends sometime at a flat nearby where she claims her grandparents live, but after that she takes off on her cycle. aditha got very close to finding out once but nandini saw it coming and diverted him to a lake on the outskirts of town.
vanathi and arulmozhi had been in the same class ever since preschool but on the first day of 9th grade, they were separated. vanathi felt terrible about it and spent a whole period crying in the washroom. kundavai heard it and felt sorry for her, so she took her under her wing. kundavai and vanathi develop a very deep, sisterly bond after that. .
aditha appears very confident but he secretly cries every other week in his room because the stress of being perfect gets to him. sometimes, when it gets too much, he sneaks out onto the roof for a smoke. vandiyathevan occasionally joins him with some nicotine gum.
vandiyathevan flirts with every girl around his age, but never with kundavai. this is partly because she's his best friend's sister but majorly because he wants to genuinely impress her and flirting won't work. kundavai for her part feels bad when she sees him flirt with other girls but never her. she reasons that it's probably because she's his best friends sister, but she sometimes wishes he would flirt with her too

Avalathu Kalvan (VanMozhi one shot)
(Preview)
"Open your eyes," he said gently.
Vaanathi opened her eyes to find a beautiful golden ball in her palm. She gasped, her eyes widening in surprise. This looked expensive.
The boy smiled at her reaction. "I crafted this from bits of gold I collected since childhood," he explained. "I always carried it with me. It brings me calm and serves as a lucky charm."
"You should keep it for tomorrow, for good luck," he suggested, noticing Vaanathi's apprehension about the upcoming meeting with the Chola princes.
Vaanathi shook her head, hesitant to accept such a precious gift from a stranger. But the boy persisted, his eyes filled with sincerity.
"I insist," he said softly. "It's just a small token of my appreciation for your kindness and for sharing your story with me."
Vaanathi looked at the golden ball in her hand, feeling touched by the boy's gesture. Despite his humble status, he was willing to give her something precious. She closed her fingers around the golden ball, feeling a sense of warmth and comfort wash over her.
"Thank you," she said softly, her voice filled with gratitude.
The stable boy smiled at her and slowly bid her goodbye. As he turned to leave, Vaanathi couldn't help but ask, "How can I meet you again to return this golden ball to you?"
The boy turned back, his smile warm and reassuring. "I will come before you when I want it back," he said cryptically.
With that, he left, disappearing into the fading light of the day. Vaanathi watched him go, her heart filled with hope and happiness. She knew their paths would cross again, and she looked forward to the day when she could return the golden ball to him.

Exploring Kundavai x Vanthiyathevan first meeting (movie version) through Vanathi's eyes
"Kanne, your dance was truly mesmerizing" Kundavai remarked, making Vanathi blush."I'm glad you like it Akka, but now that the performance is over why are we still here? Are we waiting for someone?" Vanathi asked, looking around at where they were standing in the boat, anchored in the middle of the river.
Kundavai simply smiled at her and looked at something or someone behind her. She turned around to see a coracle boat approaching them. And who was it but the person who danced with her as Kamsa Raja, standing with his hands on his hip, occassionally swaying to the movement of the river. Kundavai spoke up in a deep majestic voice, "I hear that you wanted to meet me alone"
"It depends on who you are, Devi" Kamsa Raja spoke aloud trying to match her Akka's bold tone.
"Whom do you wish to meet, young man?" Kundavai asked again
"I wanted to meet the most beautiful and gracious daughter of the Emperor Sundara Chozhan, the sister of the two brave princes Aditha Karikalan and Arulmozhi Varman, the Ilaiya Piratti Kundavai Devi" Vanathi heard the visitor speak, suppressing her smile.
Kundavai also smiled after glancing at Vanathi, "I bear all those fancy titles with burden"
Vanathi saw the speaker looking at them in surprise and particularly at Kundavai with awe. As he approached the boat, he slowly climbed up, acknowledging her with a smile which she returned and proceeded to look straight at Kundavai, in an expression that Vanathi could only describe as lovestruck. Then she understood who this person was. She remembered her Akka telling her of a Vana Kula Ilavarase named Vallavaraiyan Vanthiyathevan, a trusted friend and spy of Aditha Karikalan who was sent to meet with Kundavai. But looking at him now, he seemed less of a spy and more of a youth in love at first sight. She felt like she could say the same for her Akka too, who was now watching him with equal admiration.
"Ilavarasi" Vanathi heard Vanthiyathevan address Kundavai in a soft tone
"Aaha, what a transformation! From a demon to a spy" Vanathi suppressed a laughter at Kundavai's taunt.
"I had no choice. Pazhuvettarayar is after my blood and that fake Vaishnavite Nambi follows me everywhere" Vanthiyathevan said
"Why were you looking for me?" Kundavai asked.
"Karikalan send me to Kadambur, Devi. A secret meeting has taken place there. Prince Madhurantakan was taken there in Nandini Devi's palanquin"
Vanathi tried to eavesdrop as the conversation took a serious turn. She saw her Akka had become slightly disturbed in hearing the news but didn't lose her composure, "I have only one question - Did Madhurantakan agree to this conspiracy?"
Vanthiyathevan nodded "He wishes to be emperor" . Vanathi was shocked. What does this mean? Is there any danger to the lives of the royal family? Her Akka, her Aditha Anna and her Yaanai Paagan?
Kundavai continued to keep her poker face "The list for power surpasses the lust of beauty" She sighed "Very well. Where's my brother's message. Do you have it?"
Vanthiyathevan gave her a ghost of a smile "Yes Devi. I wrote the message myself. Coming here empty handed didn't seem right"
Kundavai extended her hand and Vanthiyathevan placed an olai into her hand, neither of them noticing Vanathi's confused look. Weren't they having a serious discussion on royal politics a while ago? How did it turn into teasing again? Vanathi wondered to herself as Kundavai read the olai aloud "This message is from a great warrior.." Raising an eyesbrow at the writer of the olai, Kundavai said in a sarcastic tone "Such modesty!"
Vanthiyathevan smirked "Books says modesty must not dwarf truth"
Kundavai looked at him with a twinkle in her eye "which book? The one you're writing?"
Vanthiyathevan tried to hide his blush "Yes Devi". Once again they failed to notice Vanathi staring at them with wide eyes. Why is the Vana Kula Prince -turned- spy trying to flirt with her Akka? And moreover why was her Akka encouraging him? How did they forget the conversation they had a few minutes ago about the conspirators and the imminent threat to the royal family? Did she imagine that? But she didn't had time to ponder on those thoughts as she heard Kundavai speak again " In the war against the Rashtrakutas, didn't you fight alongside my brother?" On hearing this, Vanthiyathevan lifted his head proudly and said "I was by his side. I killed over a thousand soldiers…" and on seeing a slight look of disbelief in Kundavai's eyes, said "Alright. A hundred? Over Fifty? If I lower the number any further my bravery will be in doubt ". Vanathi could see her Akka was impressed. Not only with the bravery of this warrior but also with his charming manner of spech.
"So shall I send you on a dangerous mission befitting a brave warrior?" . Vanathi was sure her Akka was planning something.
"Is that my reward?" Vanthiyathevan asked innocently
"After all, you are a brave warrior and have slain over 50 soldiers." Vanathi wondered whether Kundavai was just buttering him up just so he would accept the mission or if she was reciprocating his sweet-talk.
Vanthiyathevan smiled openly "That is true. I await your command"
Gone was Kundavai's playfulness when she commanded him " I want you to go to Lanka. Find my brother Arulmozhi and bring him to me. Can you do that?" . Vanathi was elated. Her Yaanai pagan was going to come here? There wasn't a day when she didn't miss him and now her prayers were finally being answered. She glanced at Vanthiyathevan. Can this warrior bring back Ponniyin Selvan safely? How trustworthy is him? But she put her worries aside. If he is the dear friend of Aditha Anna and if Kundavai Akka seems to put so much trust in him then she can also trust him. She was so engrossed in her thoughts that she missed Vanthiyathevan looking at Kundavai with adoration but heard his proclamation " I will seek the Lord of Death if you command me, Devi". Vanathi tried to suppress her giggle. Who does this person think he is - Lord Krishna himself? How he is showering words dipped in honey to her Akka as if he had known her for ages! She shifted her attention to Kundavai, eager to note her reaction.
"Really?" Kundavai asked with a smile, looking to challenge his words
"I swear on you" Vanthiyathevan said with genuinity
Vanathi knew immediately that her Akka was going to take him up on the challenge when she heard Kundavai said "Very well. I command you to jump into this river"
She saw Vanthiyathevan looked at the waters nervously before saying "Not the river Devi"
Kundavai smile wholeheartedly and Vanthiyathevan returned the smile, his eyes never leaving her face for a second. What a rare pleasant sight! Vanathi mused. Ilaiya Piratti Kundavai Devi getting flustered? She mentally noted to tease her Akka about it later. She saw Kundavai walking towards the inside chamber of the boat followed by the seemingly lovestruck Vana Kula spy. "You'll have the message for my brother before you go" She heard Kundavai say and a doubtful look in Vanthiyathevan's eyes "The crown prince is waiting for me"
"I shall let him know. He'll wait for you" Kundavai said, turning to him to say in a soft whisper "So will I"
If Vanathi was doubtful about Kundavai's actions till then, she was absolutely sure now. So this warrior with a honeyed tongue managed to conquer her Akka's heart in their first meeting itself! She knew if Kundavai actually noticed her, she would have seen her amused expression but luckily for her, the duo continued to stare at each other until Kundavai turned again to continue her teasing "There's a reward of 1000 gold coins on your head. Careful!"
Vanthiyathevan was silent till now but he suddenly declared "My life belongs to you, Devi" . Vanathi was impressed by his dedication, respect and honesty as much as she was impressed that he made Kundavai blush a second time. He seemed to lose himself in her flustered face for a while before snapping out to say " I will stay alive to fulfill your mission".
It was then that he turned around to leave, and in doing so locked eyes with her. Vanathi could hardly keep her mischievous smile to herself and he stared at her as if realising she was the sole witness to all the conversation that happened here. Then smiling at her sheepishly and looking at Kundavai's retreating figure for one more time, he started to descend the stairs.  Vanathi you idiot! Her mind chided her. Stop standing there and put this golden opportunity to good use. She called out for the warrior, meaning to call him Ilavarase but somehow saying "Kamsa Mama". He looked at her curiosly. "Can you do me a favor?" She asked, praying he wouldn't deny. "When Lord Krishna himself asks, Can Kamsa refuse?" She laughed at his term of endearment. "If I give you an olai for Ponniyin Selvan, would you make sure it safely reaches his hands?" She asked again and watched as he narrowed his eyes at her before grinning in understanding. "I am embarking on a mission of danger anyway, might as well do this mission of love too" He said and she gestured him to be quiet lest her Akka hears their agreement.
And as she watched Kamsa Mama reach the shore, she couldn't help but feel that this wouldn't be the last time she'd be seeing him. She prayed to all the gods to keep her Ponniyin Selvan safe as she would be waiting for his arrival just like Kundavai would be waiting for the return of this mysterious charmer.
