It's game over for 2023. Time to talk about the best games I played during the year. I finished many enjoyable titles on various platforms, crossing genres and time to visit even decades old games. I finished a total of 38 games this past year. And because I apparently didn't have enough choice for devices to play all these games on, we got an Xbox Series X to our household on Christmas week.

Anyhow, here are the winners of my personal Game of the Year 2023 awards. *drumroll*

1st place: Vampire Survivors (PC)

My addictive substance of choice. Doesn't shine in the graphics department with modern tech. Doesn't try to impress with thought-provoking narrative. The incredibly simple yet satisfying gameplay however is engineered to perfection. A true masterclass of game design.

+ Infectiously fun, action-filled reverse bullet hell roguelike gameplay. Just one more run! + Bold artistic identity. + Humorous touch in character/enemy design and fun nods to other videogames. + Superb soundtrack. + Tons of quality content for an incredibly cheap price. Free updates and paid DLC with even more content. - The flashing effects can go a little overboard and cause discomfort. - Later stages of game can lag even decently powerful hardware.

2nd place: Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (Wii U Virtual Console, originally on Game Boy Advance)

A classic Castlevania that holds up nicely even 20 years from release and on a big screen. With a bit more memorable music and a small quality of life improvement, Aria of Sorrow would have earned the coveted 5/5 stars in my book.

+ Balanced and fun gameplay with a good sense of progression. + Top tier level design with a concise map. + Nice art style in environments, sprites and character portraits. Great animation and enemy design. + Fitting music and audio. + Good story. - Lacks item to warp to last save room or outside castle.

3rd place: Touhou Mystia's Izakaya (PC)

Chill vibes managing your restaurant, gathering ingredients and talking to characters by day turn into frantic cooking and serving action by night. This game got its recipe right.

+ Fun, rewarding gameplay loop mixing leisurely action and challenges testing your attention. + Enjoyable story with funny events. + Wonderfully cute pixel art. + Catchy music. + Lots of content for a low price. - Starts slow, even a bit boring in the beginning before you get special customers and unlock more recipes. - Final battle had annoying RNG. - English translation could use a little polish.

Honorable mention: Crimson Shroud (Nintendo 3DS)

This surprisingly challenging table-top RPG inspired game impressed me with its quality and satisfying gameplay. This is a hidden gem worth visiting.

+ Challenging gameplay with long and brutal battles make for a rewarding experience. + Good, well-written story with two endings. + Cool art direction with 3D models mimicking table-top RPG figurines, pretty illustrations. + Great music. + Game's length is just right to keep player invested. - Overall difficulty is higher than usual for JRPGs and Game Over wasn't a rare occurrence on my playthroughs. Slight frustration ensued due to having to retry the long battle from the beginning. - Confusing equipment UI (comparison of current vs new gear).

Honorable mention: Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (Nintendo DS, played on 3DS)

Unique experience with tricky chain reaction puzzles and fantastic characters. Prominently fluid and amazing animations - I can't believe it's a Nintendo DS game! This is no trick - it's a treat.

+ Inventive gameplay and mechanics, perfect fit for touch screen. + Interesting story that definitely doesn't forget humor despite the grim subject. + Memorable characters (Cabanela and Missile were my favorites). + Awesome art style and marvelous animation quality. + Great music throughout the game. - I almost lost interest at some point and got impatient to finish the game. - I guessed one of the key plot twists but luckily that didn't put a dent on the ending.

Honorable mention: Gears of War 2 (Xbox 360, played on Xbox Series X)

Entertaining cover shooter with varying missions. The game never had a boring moment and the length of the single player campaign was just right. I'm looking forward to playing Gears of War 3 next!

+ Fun gameplay that sets expectations for other shooters. + Interesting setting and story with some cool events. + Fun dialogue that made me chuckle many times. + Good music and great English voice acting. + The challenge on Normal difficulty was just right for me. - AI controlled companions got stuck occasionally, leaving you alone in dangerous enemy territory. - I didn't always understand the mission objectives in the hectic situations. - Cutscenes can't be skipped (thankfully this is not a Kojima game).

Honorable mention: Signalis (PC)

Atmospheric sci-fi survival horror paying homage to older games. Puzzles are different from usual and require attentive skill and logical thinking to solve. This game deserves a sequel.

+ Intriquing sci-fi story with an impactful ending (there are multiple endings too). + Great art direction, appealing PS1 era inspired retro graphics with skillfully crafted pixel art. I very much enjoyed the nod to Ghost in the Shell. + Unique, well-designed puzzles and good level design. + Great atmosphere. - A bit clunky combat. - Tiny inventory space forced me to backtrack more than I would have liked. - Annoying design choice to not include a map in a couple of areas.

Physical description: Sloane is 5'11", broad-shouldered and athletic, with auburn-copper hair and grey eyes (artificial). She has shrapnel scars along the right cheek and up through the eye; high cheekbones and a strong jaw. Both arms and legs have been replaced with high-end Sarif augmentations. BACKGROUND

Daughter of David Sarif and Violette Delacourt, she was conceived as a failed attempt on Violette's part to get David to play ball with the Illuminati. When that didn't pan out, Violette tried to raise Sloane as her heir apparent. Instead, Sloane did the thing she knew would piss off her mother the most: she enlisted in the Army. Her test scores were high enough that she was shunted right into the Special Forces pipeline (which had just opened up to women). After training as a Special Forces medic, she was assigned to ODA-113, who became known over the next decade for their expertise in shutting down rogue biowarfare labs.

They were so good at their job, in fact, that the Illuminati used one of their "private contractor" contacts to crash their plane on an op a month before the events of Human Revolution, leaving her critically injured.

At the time of the opening of Odysseus Gambit, Sloane has been augmented with a special set of augs (built and secretly provided by her father) and is absolutely chewing the walls in her enforced retirement…

Preferred fighting style: Close-combat with pistols, shotguns, or knives. She'll fall back on martial arts if she has to, and she's a decent marksman with a rifle, but she likes to get right into the fray.

Keiko’s Room #34 Live Broadcast Birthday Special with Hikaru!

Ohhh! This was a lot of fun. Keiko started by singing “Yoru no Uso to”. I think I preferred the version from her fan club event but it was a neat intro. She got a huge Sabon adventcalendar with bath and body products. Looks fancy and costs around €100. Also, I am noticing that Hikaru is wearing her Kalafina pinky ring (just like Keiko always does). Dammit, I think I will have no choice but to buy it when I am in Japan (even though it’s currently quite expensive T_T). LOL at Hikaru wanting to introduce herself b some people might not know her. Keiko is like, “there’s literally no need since everyone knows who you are XD” They gathered a ton of questions but they barely got through any of them. Seems like Hikaru is still a big fan of potatoes and chicken whereas Keiko is all about red meat (and zero carbs as we all know). They started talking about potatoes because fans keep posting potato emojis instead of clapping emojis (it’s a joke among those who regularly watch Keiko’s Insta Lives where she once mistook the clapping emoji for a potato). As expected there is some anime talk but Hikaru hasn’t had much time recently to watch anything new so she doesn’t really have any good recommendations for Hikaru. They talk about what sort of animal they see each other as. Hikaru describes Keiko as squirrel and Keiko chooses a seal for Hikaru. When asked about each other’s favourite song, Hikaru says “Hitori Janai Kara” and it seems like Keiko’s favourite song in Hikaru’s album is “Ambient Border”, quite unexpected. I am so excited to hear it live during the Dec 17 event! Hikaru also confirmed that she will be wearing her stage outfit which will 100% kill me :P

Author's Note: This is a PLL fanfic that I mainly started writing for myself. I'm a die hard PLL fan but, like a lot of other people, I was thoroughly disappointed with a lot of their choices so I decided to try my hand at writing what I wanted to happen in the story. I've never written fanfic, as most of my writing experience has been via Tumblr rp's but I thought I'd give this a try!

September 1st, 2009. That was a night that Aria Montgomery would never forget, not for as long as she lived. That was the night that everything had changed.

It’d be silly to ever think that she could erase those memories from her brain, so she didn’t even try. Instead, she had decided to accept it–after all, what else was there to do? Things had happened–things that were never supposed to happen. Yet, the events of that September night had changed everything. As Lady Macbeth famously said, “What is done cannot be undone.”

By sunrise, the whole town of Rosewood knew that blonde bombshell queen bee Alison DiLaurentis was missing and nothing would ever be the same again.

Even now, after a year had passed, Aria was still unsure about how she felt about the entire situation. As she unpacked her boxes and placed her books back in their rightful place, she thought about everything that had happened and the impact her choices had had upon everyone.

One thing was for certain–she was grateful to be back in her own bedroom. The warm, dark wood of her bedroom floor and bed frame were certainly much cozier than the cold, white walls she had grown accustomed to this past year. It felt good to be back at home again.

Of course, to the outside world, she’d been away on a special study abroad program in Iceland this past year, an incredible opportunity that had happened to arise in Aria’s time of need. Her little brother, Mike, had even agreed to try to keep her Facebook page updated with beautiful pictures of the stunning fjords of Reykjavik. However, the truth of Aria’s whereabouts were much more…complicated, per se, than a study abroad trip to Iceland.

She’d spent this past year locked away hiding away in Radley Medical Center, trying to repair her fragmented mental state. After September 1st, it hadn’t taken very long at all for her parents, Byron and Ella, to figure out that her best friend’s friend’s disappearance had taken a serious toll on her mental health. As soon as the “MISSING PERSON” fliers went up, Aria just about lost it. After attempting to take her own life near the end of September 2009, her parents felt as if they had no other choice but to try and get her the help that she needed.

However, in the town of Rosewood, being “mentally ill” was not acceptable, or even relatable–sure, everyone had their own struggles but you kept that quiet and to yourself. It was the “polite” thing to do. Besides, after Aria had woken up in a hospital room, realizing her attempt had been unsuccessful, she couldn’t face her friends–hell, it was nearly impossible to face her own family, especially her little brother. Therefore, it was decided: Aria would go to Radley Medical Center in order to heal, and no one would ever know. To the outside world, she’d be experiencing an incredible opportunity overseas in Iceland and none would be the wiser.

It was quite the ruse and honestly, her parents had been a little unsure about the entire thing. Sure, people who were open about their family problems were judged harshly in Rosewood but who even cared about petty scrutiny and gossip if their daughter wasn’t okay? But it was Aria that had begged her parents to keep the truth a secret, only letting the principal of Rosewood High School know what was actually going on so she could continue her studies.

Now, after nearly twelve straight months of intensive therapy and “rest,” Aria was ready to return to the real world of Rosewood and continue on with her life. Still, the night of September 1st, 2009 still haunted her–more than anyone would ever know.

In just a few weeks–and still, years from now–the town of Rosewood would be full of gossip: gossip about a particularly handsome new teacher and his apparent penchant for underage girls. Yes, by now, it’s no secret that Ezra Fitz had been taken with Aria Montgomery when they first met at the Hollis Pub the day before school started. However, what a lot of people don’t mention is how Ezra was able to manipulate his way into Aria’s life and strike when she was most vulnerable.

You’ll come to find very soon that everyone in the town of Rosewood has flaws and secrets–absolutely everyone. But some things are more forgivable than others. And what was unconditionally unforgivable was a grown man preying on the innocent young girls of Rosewood High. Ezra had zeroed in on Aria and was just waiting for the perfect opportunity to pounce.

After all, Ezra was already well aware of Aria’s own secret–well, at least one of them. You see, during his junior and senior year at Hollis, he had heard rumors about Professor Montgomery and one of his grad students. Now, Ezra didn’t usually listen to gossip–he believed himself to be above all of that. However, it had become rather difficult to simply ignore the rumors about a professor taking advantage of one of his students. Though he’d never actually had a class with Professor Montgomery, he knew of him and figured that the rumors were probably true.

Once he put two and two together–that Aria was the daughter of Bryon Montgomery–he knew that he had an in. He was aware that it was rather ironic. But this was different, he told himself. Ezra knew she was in a susceptible position–she needed guidance, someone to talk to, a shoulder to cry on. That’s what Ezra told himself and that’s what he set out to do. Truthfully, as cunning as she was, Aria never stood a chance against someone so sinister.

However, that didn’t mean that Aria didn’t have her own ammunition. Sure, her family was holding on by a thread–but the other girls had their own secrets, too. They always had. Luckily, Aria had always been incredibly observant. Though she could certainly have her moments of outspokenness, she also knew how to sit back and listen. One could learn a lot of information when they were simply listening.

Take Hanna Marin, for example. Poor little Hefty Hanna–Aria had always detested that nickname that Alison had placed upon Hanna’s head. It was cruel and unnecessary. But Alison was the queen bee and whatever she said simply…was. However, anyone with eyes could see the toll that it took on Hanna. Aria remembered that one time, during a sleepover, the girls had been enjoying chick flicks and ice cream. They had been watching Mean Girls, one of Alison’s favorites. Aria always assumed it was because she viewed herself as Regina George.

Just before the Burn Book fight scene started–arguably one of the best scenes in the film–Hanna had gotten up to go to the bathroom. Aria thought it a bit odd but continued watching and laughing along with the other girls. But the minutes continued to pass and Hanna still wasn’t back. Curious, Aria mentioned checking on Hanna and got up off the couch and headed to the bathroom, her feet padding on the hardwood floor. When she got to the bathroom door, the unmistakable sounds of retching came from the other side of the door. Aria gave a small knock on the door. “Hanna?... Are you okay?” Hanna cleared her throat and quickly said “Yeah, I’m fine. I’ll be right out.”

Sure, Aria probably should’ve said something about it–but what could she say? Hanna was clearly embarrassed, you could hear it in her voice. Wouldn’t it just make it worse to question her about it? Aria tried to tell herself that maybe Hanna’s stomach had just been acting up but deep down, she knew the truth. She knew how Alison made Hanna feel like shit about her body–honestly, it wasn’t very surprising that Hanna would attempt to find comfort in bingeing and purging. It made Aria’s heart sink but what else could she do?

As far as Spencer and Emily went, their secrets weren’t too difficult to figure out, either. Really, all you had to do was have eyes. The way Spencer so desperately wanted to be like her older sister, Melissa, was obvious to everyone. On top of that, the brains of their group suddenly seemed to become a brainless lovestruck girl whenever her sister’s skeezy boyfriend, Ian, walked into the room. He was not only her field hockey coach but, as everyone figured, most likely her future brother-in-law as well. However, no one could deny the brunette’s heart eyes whenever Ian cracked a subpar joke.

Emily was somehow even more obvious. Between the odd comments from Alison and the way you could practically feel Emily’s giddiness radiating from her every time the blonde bombshell simply spoke, it was clear to anyone with a brain that Emily was in love with Alison. Not to mention the time that Aria had accidentally overheard one of their conversations during another infamous sleepover. She’d forgotten her phone in Emily’s room and when she was approaching the doorway, she overheard the distinct sing-song sweetness of Alison’s voice. It was the voice she used whenever she really, really wanted something

“Look, Em, I’m sorry that I was so mean to you the other day in the locker room. I didn’t mean to snap at you, I just… I just don’t feel…that way. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t still kiss–but only if you want to, of course.”

Alison’s voice was sugary sweet and full of softness–god, she was such a manipulative bitch. Don’t fall for it, Em, Aria thought to herself. But then, seconds later, Aria could hear the undeniable sounds of lips locking, so she slipped back downstairs and never told another soul.

Truth be told, Aria was mildly horrified at the state of her friend group when she returned to Rosewood High. The girls hadn’t even tried to remain close to one another? The brunette realized that it was going to be a lot more difficult to get her friends back together than she initially thought.

What horrified her even more, though, was the face that she saw at the front of the classroom during first period on the very first day of junior year. It was none other than Ezra, the man boy from the bar. He looked just as equally horrified to see her face and she was certain that he’d never speak to her again. And honestly, if he were even half a decent man, he would have quit his job right then and there–but of course, “decent” was the last word anyone would use to describe Ezra Fitz.

The situation with her English teacher might’ve fully taken over Aria’s brain that night if it hadn’t been for the sirens that began to ring out around 9PM, just as Aria was about to get ready for bed. The sirens were down the street but something made Aria’s blood run cold and she followed that feeling out onto the sidewalk. Sure enough, the sirens were just a few streets over, down by the DiLaurentis house. Oh, fuck.

Alison DiLaurentis’ body was found buried under the gazebo her parents had put up the previous summer. The backyard had been under construction at the time, making it the perfect place to dispose of a body.

The day of Alison’s funeral was what finally brought all the girls back together. They sat with each other in the same pew, as if no time had ever passed. While waiting for the service to begin, the four girls realized that they’d all been getting messages from a mysterious person who signed their messages with nothing but an “A.” Was it “A” for Anonymous? It couldn’t have been “A” for Alison. After all…her body was lying in a closed casket just feet away from them.’

However, it wasn’t until the very end of the service that the girls realized how serious all of this was. Detective Wilden, a hot shot police officer, approached the girls and vowed to find out what happened the night that Alison disappeared, which sent a chill down Aria’s spine. Just as he walked away, all of the girls’ cell phones eerily rang at the same time and the threatening message stared back at them through the screen:

“I’m still here, bitches, and I know everything - A”

Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night Review

When most authors are done with a story, they move on from it–whether that means that the characters begin a new journey or are left behind is up to them (and sometimes publishing companies). In the case of light novels, there are often spinoffs and side stories, but rarely does an author willingly take on the challenge of rewriting a finished work. Especially when the work is what the author is known for–such as how Reki Kawahara is known for Sword Art Online. The story has appeared in many forms; first being written as an entry for a light novel contest, then released as a web novel after he scrapped plans to submit it. After another work of his, Accel World, won another light novel contest years later, he was able to have SAO published along with his first-prize light novel entry. SAO, for all of the success it had, was an unfinished product. The light novel and the anime adaptation were mediocre as a result. For a series that blew up in popularity, the plotline really wasn’t that good. Kawahara would be the first to admit so, attempting to rectify this with the Sword Art Online Progressive series, where he vastly expands on the Aincrad Arc–the first, and most famous, SAO arc. Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night is an adaptation of part of the first volume of the Progressive series–with even some further revisions to Kawahara’s original story.

Aria of a Starless Night stars Asuna as the sole narrator. Unlike the light novel version, only Asuna’s point-of-view is shown. Your enjoyment of this movie depends if you like her as a character. If you think she is bland and boring, then you’ll think this movie sucks. If you like her or don’t care, you’ll probably find her version of events at least a bit more interesting than Kirito’s. Along with showing Asuna’s strict and suffocating upbringing, we get to see the original events that led Sword Art Online to change from a virtual-reality game to ‘real life’ from her point of view. Asuna, whose never played an MMORPG before, or any RPG for that matter, has to learn the ropes of SAO quickly. Thankfully for her, a friend from high school, Mizumi, is also stuck in SAO. Mizumi (otherwise known as ‘Mito’ in-game) promises to protect her from dying and get her out of the hell she’s found herself in. While Asuna is clueless about online gaming, Mito was an SAO beta tester and is more than happy to teach Asuna the ropes of SAO. 

As this movie takes place during the beginning of the Aincrad Arc, the setting is mainly the 1st floor. Asuna’s luxurious real-life home and prestigious school are also shown, as we get to see what events caused Asuna to want to put on her brother’s Nerve Gear and escape into Sword Art Online. Most of this content is original to the movie, with Kirito not making a significant appearance until about halfway through the movie. The scene where Kirito and Asuna ‘officially’ meet, which was at the beginning of the Progressive light novel, doesn’t happen until fifty minutes into the movie. This movie is essentially a redo of the first two episodes of the anime–with a lot of extra added content and context added. It’s not exactly a one-for-one copy, but it’s the same plotline essentially. 

This movie introduces a whole load of new content that wasn’t in the Progressive story (or the original Sword Art Online story for that matter), with Mito being an original character. Mito’s inclusion marks the beginning of a divergence from the mainline Progressive light novels. She completely changes the context of the story for Asuna, who in the original Aria of a Starless Night story didn’t have anyone to teach her how to play SAO until she met Kirito. At least that was implied.

Overall, Aria of a Starless Night is the best entry into the Sword Art Online anime series I’ve watched yet. I know that’s not saying much, considering the series, but I genuinely believe that this movie is solid. Is it great? I wouldn’t go that far, but Aria of a Starless Night blows the original anime out of the water. It goes without saying that an SAO anime that stars Asuna is way more interesting than one that stars Kirito. No offense to him…it’s just that he’s so overpowered that it removes a lot of the suspense a ‘death game’ should have. Asuna, while also eventually becoming very skilled at SAO, isn’t a ‘gamer’ at all. This is Asuna’s second video game that she’s ever played (the first being Tekken 7 on her phone with Mito, which Asuna sucks at). Unlike pretty much everyone else stuck inside Aincrad, she has no idea what the game is about, or even how MMOs work–leading to humorous situations, like where in the town square she asks an NPC where Mito is, referring to her by her actual name and unintentionally ‘doxxing’ her. The flip side to this is that Asuna, who until this point lived a pretty scripted life and only strived to please her family, is suddenly stuck in a world that she knows nothing about. Being forced to put that on hold and having to live on her own terms in a ‘game’ that could possibly go on forever is quite traumatizing for her. This movie shows her coming to terms with that.

The main complaint that I have about this movie is that at the liberties it takes with the source material. Of course, with such a major character like Mito being introduced, many things would have to be retconned from the original Sword Art Online and Progressive light novels, but some details that are changed do nothing but differentiate it from the light novel. One example of this that stuck out to me is Kibaou’s antagonism towards Kirito–it’s not that he doesn’t antagonize him in the movie–it’s that the points where he does are needlessly changed around. It doesn’t matter that much, but to me, it’s strange to change details like that around when keeping them the same wouldn’t tangentially change much, if anything, plot-wise. It’s unnecessary, but ultimately it doesn’t really matter that much. The resolution to Asuna’s main internal dilemma in the movie is ‘solved’ in an underwhelming way as well, with her seeming to just come to terms with what happened to her. I can understand why she would forgive in that certain circumstance, but it feels a bit unsatisfactory.

Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night is by far the best-animated portrayal of the Aincrad arc yet. Most of that credit goes to the fact that it’s adapted from the Progressive series, which is meant solely to flesh out the Aincrad arc that was blitzed through in the original light novel. Depending on how much you care about Asuna of a character will affect how you view this movie. If you think Asuna is a boring character, you probably won’t enjoy this movie, even if it’s structurally more well-put-together than the anime. Some of the retcons from this movie now mean that Kawahara has retconned his story twice, which is extremely funny in my opinion. To be honest though, the retcons are a net good. The thing that separates SAO (or at least its Aincrad arc) from most other stories is that it’s full of untapped potential. It’s a choice to just follow Kirito’s adventures–I know he’s the closest thing the place has to a Christ-like figure, but it does get boring watching someone be the best all the time and have multiple women fawn over him. Of course, Kirito still does show off in this movie, but the movie isn’t about him. Aria of a Starless Night is a solid entry into the SAO franchise–for a franchise that has had many duds in its history, it might be on the come-up now. Maybe.

I’ve been reading a lot of manga this month because I’ve been trying to clear some storage from my phone and my backlog was getting really big. So, for this month, I thought I would do some quick thoughts on the volumes that I read.

Watashi wa Kabe ni Naritai 3 - A sweet way to end a sweet series. It was really the only way to end this series in a satisfying way and it pulled it off well.

Colori Colore Creare 2 - the new series by Kozue Amano - the author behind Aria and Amanchu. Volume 1 of the series was just okay - the art was gorgeous and it definitely relaxed my brain in a way that only Kozue Amano’s work can but I was confused about the setting and the story. Volume 2 was a big improvement and I really enjoyed it. Some new characters were introduced and the setting has become more developed. This series takes place on Aqua - the location that Aria is set in - but it’s unclear yet as to whether this takes place before or after the events of Aria. Either way, I’m enjoying this and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Hitorimi desu chapter 1 - I thought this was a full volume so I was disappointed to open it up and find out that I paid full price for a single chapter. Admittedly, it was an excellent single chapter and has made me excited to read more. This one is about an older 60-year-old single lesbian as she reflects on her life. It was really interesting and I definitely want to read more but I won’t be reading it by the chapter and will be waiting for the release of the first volume instead.

Koi to Yobu ni wa Ao sugiru 1 - a yuri series about a barkeep who develops a crush on a customer who always comes in to complain about her cheating boyfriend. I enjoyed the authors previous manga, Ane wo Suki na Onee-san to, so I wanted to give this one a shot and it’s pretty cute. The barkeep is a blushing mess and it’s hard to envision her developing a romantic relationship with her crush but you can’t help but root for her anyway. This volume piqued my interest enough to keep reading but I don’t like it quite as much as the mangaka’s previous work.

Odoriba ni Skirt ga Naru 1 - a yuri series about ballroom dancing with a girl who likes cute things and has always wanted to dance the “feminine role“ but her height has her typecast as dancing the “masculine role“ but she ends getting partnered with a short 1st year who refuses to give up her position as the “masculine partner”. I thought this was a fantastic first volume that developed the characters and the setting really well and made me very intrigued to read the next volume. The characters are interesting and have good chemistry and I enjoyed seeing them grow closer. I’ll definitely be picking up the next volume soon.

Momochi-san Chi no Ayakashi Ouji 1 - This was another well-written first volume that builds the foundations of the story and makes one intrigued to read on. Unfortunately, the story wasn’t really to my taste. I don’t tend to read a lot of M/F romance manga and this one didn’t offer anything that made me want to make an exception. I may end up reading more but it’s not something that I would pay full price for.

Sayanora Rose Garden 1 - Another excellent start of a series that establishes the setting, main characters, and intrigue really well. This is a historical yuri focusing on a Japanese girl who travels to England to meet her favourite author. She’s unable to meet him but she meets a noblewoman who takes her on as a maid. The two form a close relationship but the noblewoman has some secrets and one day she asks her maid to kill her in exchange for granting the maid’s wish. I enjoyed this volume so much that I bought the other two volumes in the series the day after I finished it. I’m super curious as to how these two will end up and I hope that they are able to find happiness.

That’s not all the volumes that I read this month. There were some that I didn’t have much to say about so I didn’t end up writing about them. I hope you enjoyed reading my thoughts on various lesser known manga. I’ll see you next month.

However, when submitting feedback on behalf of another person, please be sure that the other person wants you to submit feedback. Lately, when we've reached out to individuals that feedback allegedly affects, we have been told that there isn't a problem or that they're handling it themselves. For the record, we want our members to handle problems themselves first, and then call on the mods to enforce boundaries.

We would also like to remind everyone to read and reread both our server rules & official rules, especially if you haven't freshened up on them lately. We've received some feedback lately about behavior which may not fall under the umbrella of accepted community etiquette, but does not actually constitute breaking rules. This etiquette should not be referred to as a formal rule, and so there should be no expectation on the mod team to enforce it. There are no "hidden" rules. This is not to be confused with setting reasonable boundaries and having those boundaries encroached on. That in itself constitutes the breaking of a rule, and you should approach a mod about it.

Last month, we announced that we will begin requiring that everyone link skill point trackers to their stats pages. We will begin enforcing this rule on March 1st, so don't delay. This is ONLY to track skill points and will not replace your regular stats page. If you would like to use a template, we have several listed on our app page. You may also make your own, as long as it breaks down how many skill points you have and where you got them. If you need help figuring out your skill points, please reach out to Mod Rai.
