uhhhh quick fire for the second image from left to right juvenile vessel - old world cable maintenance - artistic diplomat vessel
Headcanons below the cut:
(Im not kidding word counter marked this as a 5 minute reading time open at your own risk)
While the sentiment of the architect network as "a thousand strings in a melody, not one louder than the rest" is a poetic interpretation of the network, it is not necessarily reflective of the precursors society as a whole.
At its peak, the species span billions of planets with billions on billions of individuals, all with their own degrees of autonomy and divergence. If each architect is equal in its power, than it is equal in its power to choose. Even if the soul of an architect, its very essence and its personality, is designed so perfectly that its primary desire is the perpetuation of order and advancement (two inherently divergent concepts), faults occur. Breakages occur. Pockets, cultural subsets, faded transmissions, and any other element of lost insight be it archaic or modern, lends itself to the impossibility of an entirely homogeneous society.
Whether a hive minded society reflects the only means to perfection is debatable, but its important to remember that our main portal in to the precursor world is Al-an, a known prodigy born and raised in to a society that has done nothing but benefit him. His view of his people is intrinsically skewed. He has never had a reason to see beyond the propaganda, nor question his directives. They have never once failed him.
But what of the little guys? The constructed failures so to speak. Those destined to be cast in to the bowels of poisonous cobalt mines and those who's birth purpose is to be irradiated and isolated for the greater good of the collective. Those who's genes prompted sub-standard intelligence who will never be seen as truly important. Their needs must be cast aside by design for the greater good of the collective. By design they must be ignored, their thoughts not relevant to the forwarding of progress.
Because there is true power disparity there is a true hierarchy.
Aware of this, the precursors devised a system of checks and balances to ensure that scientific progress remains at the forefront, rather than the accumulation of power by any individual.
As with all things though, power inevitably seeks to maintain and grow like a cancer.
One such exertion of power comes in the form of a "hive master". These unique individuals require precise expensive machinery in order to be produced, and as such are very rare. The vessels they require are likewise uniquely suited to only these hive masters and their unique ability to sway the voices and personality of any individual connected to the network. They themselves are invisible, completely undetectable except in physical form. Their unique telepathic abilities only work when paired with these vessels. They have no voice nor will of their own and are said to represent architect society on its most basal level.
Given their difficult to produce nature established personalities are very often used in place of new seed combinations. Personalities most suited for repurposing as a hive master include those who are most senior, intelligent, and aligned wholly with societal goals.
They are typically only found on heavily populated planets with more than a few thousand individuals. There they go undetected, like the sound of wind lost in a sea of voices, whose squall directs its very rampage. They are also enlisted for many unique duties on populous planets, such as the refactoring of corrupted individuals and silencing cultural sub-sets.
The average architect probably isn't even aware of the existence of a hive master unless their profession lies in the refactoring and diplomatic processes.
Despite the cultural drive for a monotonous and orderly society, artistic expression is common and encouraged in some sects. All architects possess the desire to express themselves, similarly to humans. Some do this simply with their inbuilt biolights that vary naturally with the individual, while others (less commonly) modify their vessel or design new and unique ones for themselves.
A vessel after all is a costly investment you cant just change like the season, its built to last you a couple thousand years. It's only natural that some seek to don something unique.
This behavior is sometimes detested by more traditional architects, but is not universally frowned upon.
Diplomats are actually encouraged to take on more artistically designed vessels. Often with their respective species' artistic values in mind. They've found greater success with alliances when they don't look like massive sticks in the mud.
Subsets of culture also at times develop unique vessels. Such as an order-over-progress movement that developed on the fringes of the network and preferred pie-bald esque vessels. Alternatively in the past as wars waged between the architects the opposing sides often don differing forms to show their allegiances. In more recent history, a wave of white-clad vigilantes advocated for a complete reset of the old-world collective.
Aside from artistic and affiliation vessels, mainstream precursor society also used a series of varying vessels to reflect personal occupation. Some of the most notable included the warrior vessel, who by design met the largest accommodations of standard architecture for the purposes of intimidation and physical altercations. Al-an's vessel likewise is very common as a heavier-built variant meant to face harsh outer worlds such as 4546B. On base, more light and energy efficient vessels make the dominant force where defense isn't a huge priority.
Microvessels such as those seen above in grey are fairly uncommon despite their energy efficiency. They are most efficient on old world planets that have been in development for hundreds of thousands of years, where the march of time means that not all builders past and present were on the same wavelength and as such small and precise forms mean that construction can be completed with minimal risk to crowded infrastructure.
Another unique and uncommon vessel is that of a juvenile grow-out vessel. These are seldom customized beyond survival needs, and are designed to acclimate a freshly generated architect to the physical world. Like a living vessel, they grow with the individual starting from broodling all the way until young adulthood. They tend to be a bit clumsy and lack the ability to interface with most technology. Always running a blue biolight, these vessels to not require a lot of energy to function physically. A juvenile architect must prove its maturity before it is allowed to graduate in to an adult vessel. This change-out phase is a diplomatic process and one can sometimes wait many years before being approved in to maturity.
The treatment of a new architect varies quite significantly depending on their birthplace and genotype. High performing juveniles are singled out very quickly for better education. Despite the rarity of children in architect society they are not given much importance. A single broodmother may be the ward of up to fifty broodlings, each of which given little attention in favor of allowing them to develop social skills among themselves. Despite architect's seeming infinite power to control resources, broodling mortality is surprisingly high.

The last embrace
Sat down at my desk to draw a Jo-an sketch page, blacked out and woke up to yuri on my screen.
More info below the cut :>
Tumblr media
After a failure of the network to implement quarantining procedures billions of individuals find themselves contaminated with the alien disease, kharaa. Billions lose their lives and architect society is hanging by a thread as the network becomes broken and fragmented. Long-standing enemies of the race take the opportunity and strike weakened communities. In a desperate attempt to save their species, vital individuals were evacuated into heavily guarded and heavily quarantined blackout colonies.
Not all are lucky enough to be chosen though. With promises of salvation, many are forced to leave their homeworlds and those important to them. These are two such individuals separated in the chaos of such a sudden evacuation. A processing unit and a munitions soldier might otherwise be considered perverse for expressing such intimacy in any other situation.
Ae-Da (She/He/They): A foot soldier with potential to be a leader if not for her constant desire for distraction and rebellious disposition. His specialty lie in arming and ensuring munitions for the architect army's lower ranks. He has an above average knowledge for electrical engineering and has been caught before sabotaging non-vital systems.
Jo-An (She/They): A specially designed individual designed for the processing of large quantity data on the establishing headquarters of the EY 8 No system. Considered clinical and pragmatic, with little sense of individuality beyond her duties. Interactions with the foot soldier Ae-Da however have left the processing unit more standoff-ish towards authority.

WOAAAH YOU CAN ASK MY CHARACTERS THINGS TOO?!?!!
Tumblr media
Also inspired by my friends' askboxes (with @architect-lumicent and @lostchelicerate starting this up), I decided to try this out as well! I haven't talked about my characters that much here on Tumblr, yet, so this would be a nice way to get people a little more informed about my weird head puppets. From left to right, we have RY-MI, LO-RE, Ren-EE, a little lower with their arms wide open R-ELI, SW-AN, that little human Erin Webbs, and finally TA-WN! I would have included my good ol' CO-NA, but he's a massive super computer Architect and drawing him in would have been awkward. He's literally just a bigger RY-MI. Feel free to ask my characters anything! Whether it is lore related, or absolute tomfoolery, just lay it on us. Anonymous asks are also open, I just only ask to keep it PG-13!
Tumblr media
More information about the characters after the break. This will double as a character "master post" until I make a separate one.
Tumblr media
RY-MI :: This young Architect is the apprentice of CO-NA and specializes in space drydock management, spacecrafts, and other vehicles. He was the best friend of R-ELI while the two were still broodlings and assisted in their escape from their Network's High Order. RY-MI is also notorious for "taking his dad's car without permission" and test driving spacecrafts. LO-RE :: As the designated historian, record keeper, and anthropologist of her closed off faction's Network, LO-RE is incredibly no nonsense. She takes her work incredibly seriously and is currently stationed on 4546B to salvage information, though fortunately she is a tolerant individual. Can't say the same for Erin, though, she hates that poor guy. Ren-EE :: Ahh, the founder of the closed off faction that a majority of my characters are part of. He split of many Architects from the main Network and created his own nation with them due to the Kharaa, but even after the pandemic died down he continued to keep his people in secrecy. While he himself had a rebellious streak and is rather hardheaded, when R-ELI showed the same attitude he was not swift to understand... in fact, he was swift to shun them into the cosmos. R-ELI :: They are an exiled Architect who used to be the apprentice of the High Order. However, due to their very pointed opinions and all the issues they caused for the High Order, they were removed. Forced away, they're now in charge of their own education/research projects, space travels, and creative progression. They also have severe trust issues because they know too much about people and people want to know what it is. They're pretty silly otherwise. SW-AN :: Stationed on 4546B with LO-RE in order to help them navigate the water planet, SW-AN is a well recognized and educated marine biologist. However, he is also fairly antsy and is spooked easily. He is incredibly close to Erin Webbs and is the partner of TA-WN. Erin Webbs :: He is an Alterran who was sent down with the disguised LO-RE and SW-AN in order to carry out Architect research... which was hidden from Alterra otherwise. He tries his hardest to assist the other two as much as possible and he shows a considerable amount of care for them, even if he makes plenty of quips, but LO-RE does NOT want him to know anything at all... well, that's until he finds out they're actually Architects anyways and he's forced to abandon Alterra. TA-WN :: Commonly referred to as the yeehaw Architect, TA-WN is an ex-industrial worker and is now a full time wildlife conservationist. She knows damn well how to pull her weight and throw the weight of others around. CO-NA :: The Commander in Navigation and Armory. His vessel has been altered to be able to hook up to technology all throughout the Network, however he specializes in vehicles, navigation directory and paths, and weaponry. His vessel also doubles as a massive super computer and for these reasons, he mostly stays within a facility and has his apprentice do the work that requires actively moving about. Very chill guy, just needs a ridiculous amount of Architect coffee and a break from Ren-EE. Psst if you made it here, Architeresa / TA-RA is also available to be asked.

ARCHITECT/SAFETY INSPECTOR YOU SAY? PLEASE TELL ME ALL ABOUT IT THANK U
I started this for SW rares in 2022 (you know, that exchange where I wrote like 9 fics? 😅🤣) and never finished it; I also accidentally deleted any mention of who it was meant to be for, oops. I give to you the grand total of all my notes (but these unnamed ocs are very dear to me anyway and i think of them often):
epistolary
research reports
academic abstracts
grant proposals
blueprints
project estimates
inspections
citations
Arch: what i want to be when i grow up age 8
Insp: excerpt from middle/upper grade school paper on architectural shortfallings (with oblique reference to nonhumanoid accessibility) with precociously pedantic, officious language and spikipedia citation
Arch: college entry essay with lots of soaring imagery metaphors and lofty goals
inspector: homework, the history of parcel surveying on coruscant
grant proposal for: ?
inspector: publishes very dry thesis
arch: doing research, cites inspector
the inspector is slightly older, settled into a career in the republic when it falls and the bureaucracy doesn’t change THAT much. they are nonhuman but humanoid, skilled and hardworking, quiet and not revolutionary. firm and uncompromising in their reports. things begin to go amiss when they correct someone with more ambition than sense. (imply that the lack of safety railings thence forward is caused by this)
the architect is younger, a rising star at the turn of the empire, who admired the inspector through school by way of their body of work. human and idealistic
scathing commentary by inspector made the architect humble and grateful for the logistics and reality of buildings when sketching castles in the stars.
they dont contact one another directly/personally until almost the end.
architect notices that citations of the inspector’s work have gotten scarce and their academic series is overly delayed.
they start digging, making a picture of activity by dates, and they see. the last date was a few weeks ago.
that’s not that long in the grand scale of things, but architect knows this person is meticulous and consistent and unafraid to call a duck a duck and a lack of railings a hazard.
they scrounge some more, discreetly, and find an address. a comm code. a forwarding address. a next if kin that doesn’t exist.
they reach out.

Architect OCs rise up
Tumblr media
A few more tidbits;
They run and walk in a similar pattern as a rabbit, back legs close together and front legs leading with a slight lean forward when maneuvering.
They're far more physical than most architects. No extra mechanical limbs for them, but they can access electromagnetic abilities via touch on their end of their bio-organic limbs.
Their form is so in-tune with the electricity in their body that their front hooves can act like powerful tasers, a perfect design for a defense against swarms of dangerous alien beasts.
Ar-Mor is an architect strangely imprisoned in a small facility deep below on the homeplanet, locked in there soon after the outbreak of Kharaa on 4546B, as a sliver of hope to have someone there to aid the Architects' stored consciousnesses when they were ready.
It was not much in there. It was a wide room with a single vent to the outside in one corner, of which sunlight could not reach. The same few robots came in and out of the vent daily to tend to the room, to keep it as clean as possible so that Kharaa might not find them.
A timer had been put on the seal keeping them in. However, lack of precaution or a backup plan had meant that the seal had broken, leaving them stuck inside. Being sealed in, and too large to fit through the vent, Ar-Mor eventually fell into a dormant state until any signs of life could come to wake them from their slumber.

Architect moms! (Click for better quality)
(Please don't claim as your own or repost thank you!)
These are 2 of my lovely Subnautica ocs. They are very in love and have an adopted son named Angelo who is an Alterra experiment designed after the Architects.
(I forgot what I named them both oops but I'll update when I remember)
The blue one is very stoic, she is more focused on doing work and staying on task but is also still loving to her partner. She generally does research and is very curious about new things even if she doesn't express it much. (Her primary color is blue, which is also her happy/relaxed color. She doesn't change color much) She's only been off planet once and that was on an Alttera meeting between a bunch of human and Alterra researchers but she was lost and through a series of accidents discovered Angelo and a bunch of other unethical experiments.
The yellow one is usually very bubbly and happy, being very expressive with her emotions so her colors change often (Yellow is her primary color/ color for being happy), she was also once a soldier or protector of sorts for a rebellion team against Alterra (She was one of very few Architects to join and was one of even less who ended up actually fighting rather than researching) so don't mess with her loved ones. She does have a crack on one side of her head from an injury which is why she retired from being a soldier but still researches for the rebellion team. Because of the injury she occasionally (it also gets more frequent in the future or when she's stressed) gets disconnected from the Architect's hive mind or abilities to always be in each other's minds. When this happens she'll often feel lonely and scared but fortunately her partner always stays with her to help.

Architect sona? idk I'll have to draw them a few more times before I decide
Been thinking about them for a bit :> drew them here a couple weeks ago
They're a bit asocial and regret every day choosing a bright and flashy vessel. Their profession is kind of behind the scenes designing bodies and outfits for diplomats, so they spend most of their days going over research on alien species and art history in a cramped studio. They write fanfiction about the aliens also.
Probably got a couple screws loose.

I have never drawn an Architect before so this was a ride but I managed it! I've named them Fr-An and they are an old researcher who was accidentally left behind on a lava planet, they lost their arm and so they replaced it with one of their floating arms(which stopped working due to the planets strong magnetic field interrupting/ruining Fr-An's telepathy, which is also how they were left behind) The interruptions with the planets magnetic field made anything they said to their network basically static, and when the others on the team left they didn't realize Fr-An wasn't with them(it was a very quick escape tbf) and even if the team went back they wouldn't be able to locate Fr-An. Anyway, Fr-An's kinda angy and bitter now due to being left behind and having their telepathy ruined, and they also struggle to emote like a regular Architect since they constantly had to show red/orange colors to stay hidden.
