I was commissioned by the extremely nice @birdyprincette to draw Archduke J from MADK. Never thought anyone would ever commission me to draw a character from this comic, but that's why I like taking commissions, they give me the opportunity to draw things I probably wouldn't on my own initiative. The manga is pretty subversive (it's eroguro) and VERY MUCH NOT MEANT FOR KIDS so keep that in mind if you want to check it out, but the art is magnificent.

Book Review: ‘Ascendance of a Bookworm’ #14 (4.2)
Tumblr media
Ascendance of a Bookworm: Part 4 Volume 2 (Ascendance of a Bookworm by Miya Kazuki My rating: 5 of 5 stars Aside from the dumbass (lovesick) prince, aside from the spiteful (petty) archknights, and aside from her exceedingly worrisome (annoying) caretakers back home, Rozemyne's first semester abroad is going swell. ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v14 is the novel series' finest example of "one person's daily aspiration is another person's unmitigated disaster." Lady Rozemyne slips into a comfortable schedule of attending the library and further coaching up her duchy's peers. She occasionally makes time for a tea party or two, but only when necessary or in furtherance of her personal goals. Is it really Rozemyne's fault that she shows up Prince Anastasius, arrogant and abrasive, whenever he challenges her to prove her noble worth? Is it really Rozemyne's fault that the jerks from the duchy of Dunkelfelger are too stupid to do their own background work to avoid being humiliated when attempting to match wits? Whatever the case, readers track Rozemyne's daily adventures as she ingratiates herself to the library staff, befuddles fellow archduke candidates, and occasionally wades into interduchy statecraft, if by sheer accident. ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v14 is a strong, entertaining read. Without constant commentary from Ferdinand, Sylvester, and Karstedt, the young woman's delightfully logical efforts to weasel out of danger are met with just the right balance of amusement and confusion. Social graces this girl has not. For example, when a rival duchy challenges Ehrenfest to a game of treasure-stealing ditter, Rozemyne-the-strategist absolutely dominates. And when Anastasius publicly chides her intellect, Rozemyne-the-brilliant calmly and coolly proves she's eternally prepared with a comeback. One of the novel's best moments occurs during a tea party. A friendly get-together between Rozemyne and the dainty Lady Eglantine (duchy of Klassenberg) goes sideways when Anastasius crashes the party and insists Rozemyne compose a new piece of music for his sort-of girlfriend. The prince is throwing his weight around and trying to put Ehrefest in its place. Except, of course, Rozemyne snaps her fingers, orders her attendants into ready position, and blithely composes a new tune for the harspiel on the fly. She's that good. It isn't until much later that Rozemyne learns how constantly showing up royalty, and frequently responding to their prodding with raw sarcasm, is typically viewed as a death warrant. Whoops. To that end, the current volume also makes a concerted effort to materialize the nation's political infrastructure. Readers learn more of the balance of power between the two princes (Anastasius and his elder brother, Sigiswald). Readers also learn more about the rules of succession (real or presumed), as well as the consequences of attempting to run away from one's royal fate. As far as drama goes, ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v14 doesn't disappoint. When one of her retainers expresses outright disgust for serving a noble with such a weak constitution, Rozemyne must make a difficult decision regarding how to properly effect a punishment befitting the ignorant. To cut off a retainer is to disgrace a person's whole family. But doing so also makes one liable for retaliation. If she's too severe, then her reputation may shift toward a more authoritarian vibe. If she's too soft, then her other retainers may view her kindness as a weakness. What's a librarian to do?

As it became clear that the assassins were Bosnian Serbs who had been prepared for their mission in Belgrade, Wilhelm went into one of his belligerent moods. It was his practice to write in the margins of diplomatic dispatches as he read them, and his comments were often wildly dramatic; it was a way of blustering, of playing his beloved role of All-High Warlord, and also of letting the foreign office know where he stood. “Then he's a false rascal!” he would soon be saying of Britain's foreign secretary in one such note. “He lies!” “Rot!” When at the beginning of July he received a wire in which the German ambassador in Vienna reported having urged the Austrians not to be too quick in moving against Serbia, Wilhelm exploded. “Who authorized him to act that way?” he wrote. “Serbia must be disposed of, and that right soon!”

Joshua has been staying at Martha's rest since a couple weeks, having been picked up by a few guards stationed there when found wandering the landscape by himself. When informing them that he must return to Rosalith and to the Archduke, he was met with bewilderment, and informed that his home is occupied by imperials since the fall of Phoenix Gate.
It's naught that Joshua can or wants to understand. And so he goes nigh mute, refusing to give anyone his name or anything else that might give away his identity and resolving himself to having to sneak away and make his way back home by himself should no one from Rosalith get here first. That is until he catches sight of a man so strange yet so familiar at the same time. An imperial Bearer, accompanied by an equally familiar silver-haired lady and a big hound. From around the corner of the inn, Joshua warily observes the small group making their way through the settlement - until the hound raises its head and sniffs the air ere it dashes towards him, that is. Immediately, the young lord steps back in an attempt to retreat, but alas - it's too late. With an excited bark, the hound jumps on him and Joshua falls to the ground, not able to help the soft laugh escaping him when the animal licks his face.
Tumblr media
They had been busy helping out where they could. Both had too many sins and regrets to ignore those in need. Perhaps it felt like he could earn redemption by being helpful. Even though they had their own reasons for going to Martha's rest, they still seemed to get swept up in helping. They had been doing a favor for Martha when Torgal caught the scent of something. Clive cursed under his breath. He was usually so well-behaved. He told Jill to go on ahead while he retrieved the wolf. It was dangerous to be a bearer on his own, but this place was safer than most.
His heart sunk into his stomach when he saw that Torgal had knocked down a child. In a tone far too much like a parent lecturing a child, he scolded the wolf. He whined softly in protest, but Clive commanded him to return to the inn with Jill. He didn't want Torgal to be pulled into more trouble if this child's parents got angry. With only a growl in protest, the hound relented.
Tumblr media
"Apologies. M-my master sent me to retrieve him." He kneeled beside the child. "Are you h-" His voice died in his throat.
Blue eyes widened as he saw the boy. An illusion or a hallucination. Or a damned ghost. He didn't know. The lump that formed in his throat instantly stole his voice. His heart pounded in his chest and it felt like a knife was twisting in it too.
"J-Joshua...?" His voice trembles, cracks, and is barely audible. He isn't sure how long it takes before the tears run out of his eyes. Real or illusion, Clive cannot stomach the raw emotion attacking him. The brother that he has loved... The brother that he had killed... His hands moved to grip his small shoulders, fingers trembling as he held onto them. Gentle as to not hurt but firm.
"I.... I'm sorry...." Clive had always wanted to look strong in front of him. Shedding tears in front of Joshua was never something he wanted. But here he was, crying before him. Begging for forgiveness that he did not deserve. "I'm so sorry... I didn't.... I would never.... want to hurt you... I'm sorry."

Thread about Joanna of Castile: Part 8: “The Tragic Departure: Philip's Refusal and Juana's Suffering
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Philips' refusal to stay longer shocked both monarchs and procurators. Castilian procurators warned that if he crossed France during wartime, he would be considered a traitor, exposing himself to the mercy of his enemies and endangering Juana's life. This would not only undermine the monarchs, but also the interests and honour of all Spain, and would cause great agitation. The Aragonese procurators appealed to Philip in the same way. Although the monarchs persuaded Juana to remain for the birth of their fourth child, Philip left Madrid on 19 December.
Martire was dismissive of Juana, who showed no sign of 'royalty or courage'. Burton, perhaps familiar with Martire’s letters, later summarised the situation in his opus on melancholy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Juana was:
“So impatient and melancholy upon [Philip’s] departure, that she would scarce eat her meat, or converse with any man; and though she were with child, the season of the year terrible, the wind against her, in all haste would to sea after him.”
Historians have also attributed this distressing episode to Juana's personal obsession with Philip, underestimating the broader political aspect. As with all female royals, Juana was born into a highly political setting. Even though she wasn't power-hungry, honour and reputation mattered to her. She was not only affected by her separation from her husband, but also by his conduct towards her. As a result, Juana, who wore violet for her reunion with Isabel in May, bid Philip farewells in December.
Almost certainly, this signalled more than personal grief.  She was heir to the many realms of Castile and Aragon and beyond personal grief and dishonour, her mourning signalled a political calamity.
The idea that Philip had run from his commitments as soon as the oath-taking was over made people doubt the succession, which made it very unlikely that the Spanish kingdoms could be ruled by princes who were also archdukes of Austria and dukes of Burgundy. This left Juana with a difficult decision, although not necessarily a resolute one:
To abandon her husband and children and remain in Castile to confront an uncertain future; or, in the event of Isabel's demise, to allow Fernando to continue to lead until Charles reached adulthood.
Considering the magnitude of negative remarks regarding Juana's conduct, it is noteworthy to recall that throughout the spring, she remained faithful to her royal duties. She made various acts of religious patronage, including visits that January to the Clarisan monastery of Rejas. Another sign that she supported the Franciscan order comes from a note written by a man named Francisco Segarra, who was hired by the kings to inspect monasteries in Aragon in 1493. Segarra thanks Juana for an act of charity and for her letters, in which she told him not to hesitate to ask her for more help. He hopes to be able to visit her soon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On 10 April, she brought comfort to her parents with the birth, at Alcalá de Henares, of a second son, Ferdinand, whom she agreed to leave in Castile. Sandoval describes Juana’s pleasure at the birth and the (fattering) sermon about her that Villaescusa preached at the baptism. Zurita refers to the:
“Great respect that the princess always had for the queen.

Fear flashed across the demons eyes when the archduke grasped a hold of his throat. A hand instinctively reached up to try and pull it away before he stopped himself. Knowing that it would probably make matters worse.
"Crowley... Mr Archduke... I meant no offense. Was j-just offering my services, is all. We always worked so well together before. Anything you want.... an-anything at all, I'm your demon."
