FISH EMERGENCY
A few months ago I mentioned that my two tail betta fish, Loulou, had the fringe of his tail turning oddly opaque and white. I posted here to ask opinions, and ended up checking everything from new growth, to ich, to velvet, to fin rot, to regular wear and tear.
This was Lou when I got him, compared to about a six months later btw:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Out of my own depth, I went to an aquarist in town and showed them pictures, describing my concerns. They told me that it was most likely damage from something abrasive in his tank
Pics I showed them:
Tumblr media
The thing is though, I don't HAVE anything abrasive in his tank??? He has a ceramic skull hide, which is a little bumpy but otherwise fine, and a smooth flat rock, and his substrate. All his plants are real and his water pump is protected by a sponge.
I left him in the care of a sitter about three weeks ago, and when I came back, his fins were noticeably shorter and far more haggard. I gave his tank a super thorough clean in case it was fin rot and told myself I'd go back to the aquarist later this week, when I'm not at work.
Then today I came home to THIS:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photos are bad cause it's nighttime and he didn't wanna hold still for pictures despite treats but his fins have MULTIPLE broken spines and his upper tail is BLEEDING?
I noticed a bit of red on him the other day and mistakenly believed he was changing colours again, but it's DEFINITELY blood.
He has no other tank mates except for a few snails I put in there to handle the plants.
I thought maybe he was chewing himself or something but he cant reach the spots that are missing.
I'm sorry to post this here, but has anyone with fish seen this before??? I've had him for almost a whole year now and have not had this happen before
Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated, I'm taking everything solid out of his tank until I know what's happening.
Thank you

Hi Fishblr people, I need help
So I wanted to ask for advice. I have two goldfish(?) that I may or may not have rescued from my uni because they were used for an experiment. Every other fish used in the experiment died, with only the two survivors. They are Brobbles and Yoimiya. I knew my neighbour had fish, I tried to ask if they wanted these two but they already had six full-grown fancy goldfish (I don't know what kind) and could not take them. So the responsibility kinda fell to me. I bought a tank. I know 20 gallons is the minimum, but I was forced to take this 30x25x30cm tank (it's a 5-gallon, I think?), and I know it's been stressing both of them. It's way too small, I know. Brobbles is really aggressive and territorial and nips and chases Yoimiya and I feel bad for Yoimiya because her(?) tail is cut short. I really was hoping to get that 20-gallon tank because I knew this would happen, but unfortunately, I couldn't. Is there any way I can lessen the stress? Make Brobbles less aggressive or anything? Yoimiya is struggling with Ich I believe and I've already bought a heater (it's shipping for a few days) and added in a teaspoon of no-additive rock salt (could've been aquarium salts but from what I saw, rock salt was fine as long as there aren't any additives), changed the water and added a few drops of methylene blue to it too. I know I probably shouldn't have taken them in being so underprepared, but I thought them being stuck in a water bottle left to die and seeping into chemicals was probably not the life they deserved. I just felt bad for them, and now I really truly do want them to feel better. Please be nice to me, I'm really a beginner. I just want these little fish to know life better than being stuck in a lab and suffocating in chemicals.

10 reasons why you should get live plants for your fish tank!
Live plants look prettier than most fake ones!
They give younger or more timid fish a place to hide/feel safe
Can help oxygenate the tank for your fish! (Like how trees give us oxygen)
Reduce algae growth
Plastic plants could potentially harm your fish (sharp) whereas live plants don't
Help provide good bacteria specifically for new tanks
Makes your fish more at 'home' and enriched. Mimics natural habitat
Helps with water parameters!
Very addictive, fun and rewarding to grow
Can be sign of good tank conditions (healthy thriving plants are usually a sign of healthy tanks and vice versa)
Don't be scared to try them out! I love my plants so much🥺 There are so many different types that you can get very low maintenance plants that basically require nothing but good substrate to grow!
Aquascapes with plants always look amazing!

Hello! I have a Situation and its totally cool if you're not able to give advice but im looking for advice anyway bc im autistic and have no idea how to navigate romantic situations.
So ive had a friend since i was 12 her pronouns are she/they so i will be using both. Im now 20 and they're 21. I've known I like girls since i was 13. And shes pan.
So, in the past, ive had like fleeting thoughts of dating/kissing them but i usually just shake my head and think "nah i cant possibly want to date her bc they're my best friend, i just have very strong platonic feelings." Like Very Strong. Ive literally said that i will always compare my feelings for a future romantic partner with my feelings for her bc they're so strong.
So im honestly not sure if i would know if i was in love with someone unless it hit me in the face, and i am currently feeling like it has hit me in the face. I woke up at like 4 am last night from a dream just thinking "omygosh im in love with her" and ive been journaling and thinking all day ahout my feelings and im starting to think ive just been in strong denial/oblivious about my feelings. Both bc im autistic and have difficulty identifying emotions and bc im demiromantic and rarely experience romantic attraction so i dont have much experience with it.
I guess the point of this ask is about any advice you can give regarding knowing if i actually have romantic feelings and if i do,, like what do i do about it??? Should i tell them? We have a really strong friendship and i dont wanna make her uncomfortable. I think ill be okay not acting on my feelings but its been literally less than 24 hrs since realizing my feelings might be romantic and i dont know if it will be difficult to hide or what to do about it. They're also like my only close friend so i cant just ask her what to do like i would normally, which is why im asking you.
Again, i understand if you cant answer this bc its a pretty personal situation but i would appreciate any advice.
Thank you! :)
Ahh once again prefacing with the fact that I am really Not Qualified to give advice on most things😅 but I can give you my take as an outsider on the situation and with my (very limited experience) in case that might help you at all, but again really take all of this with a LARGE grain of salt i am a VERY unqualified stranger on the internet so most of what i say is probably nonsense😅
I feel like this is like my go to advice but I’d say just wait it out tbh, as someone who was in capital L love with their childhood best friend for a while it really just came down to time for me. It took a while for me to be sure whether the feelings were romantic or platonic for SURE. Especially since the platonic love stayed for me even when the romantic love began🤷‍♀️ it made it extra tricky to tell lol.
My ‘oh this is NOT just platonic’ realization came from YEARS of excessive thinking about them, WAY too much jealousy when they dated other people, a LOT of thoughts and urges about holding their hand, a lot of comparing them to people i had passing crushes on, and (i kid you not) an embarrassing amount of love poems teenage me wrote about them lol😅
However! The slow process and thinking it through also lead me to the conclusion that i did NOT want to date them. Being a couple just wouldn’t work for us and I value them so so so SO much as my best friend and really need them in my life as that separate, constant, platonic relationship that I deeply love and care for. It works better for us than any sort of dating could🤷‍♀️ not to mention all of our other clashing traits that just wouldn’t work if our relationship was romantic. And now I’m honestly really not romantically interested in them anymore, they’re just my best friend and always will be :)
I dont think it’s too unusual to fall a bit (or a lot) romantically in love with a best or close friend, I think the more important thing to recognize is whether it’s something worth acting on, that you’re willing to act on, and that will be good for both of you to act on
So I’d say ruminate on it! There’s no pressure to figure it out, if you start getting too preoccupied with it you can try talking it through with them, not even as a confession type thing, you can simply have a conversation letting them know you’re a little confused or wanting their opinion if you think they’ll be receptive to it. Best I can tell you is that there’s no clock on figuring it out, there’s no “right” way to define what type of love you feel, and to remember that either way you’ve got a great person in your life. I’m very sorry I can’t be more help and if anyone has any other advice feel free to leave it in the notes for this person! Good luck to you and I hope you find what you’re looking for soon <3!!

fishkeepers pls help, im on the verge of a breakdown over the absolute state of my big tank atm 😭
it went from this:
Tumblr media
to this:
(pretty sure its an algae bloom)
Tumblr media
all my fish are fine & water parameters are normal so it's mostly a cosmetic issue but it's stressing me out & nothing I'm trying seems to work! I've done huge water changes & smaller ones, squeezing out the filter sponges, dosing with clarity (twice), keeping the light off, scrubbing all the algae off the glass, dosing with biostarter, and I'm now trying purigen in the filter. last time i had a smaller algae bloom, i blacked out the back of the tank that was facing a window & that fixed it, but this is so much worse!
does anyone have advice on how to fix this?? not being able to see everyone freaks me out a lot haha

I’d love to hear your take on some Bug types!(any is fine, but if you need a specific one, how about Heracross?). Thanks for your time Mx. Shine!
Hey, thank you so much for the ask! I focused on heracross for this one, but definitely keep an eye out for future assorted bug-type trivia, and please feel free to send in any more requests or questions you might have. Without further ado, here's some fun facts I was able to dig up about heracross!
It's well known that heracross are nectarivores, meaning they feed primarily on nectar, honey, and tree sap. This means that they don't normally need to prey on other pokémon, even in the wild! However, in desperate times (or, occasionally, on accident) heracross have been known to feed from nectar-producing grass-types such as bulbasaur and bellossom, much to the discomfort and chagrin of the grass-types in question.
Heracross, of course, have a set of wings hidden under their elytra! Unfortunately, they have trouble using them effectively due to their massive size and weight, and can only fly very short distances. One population of heracross in Lostlorn Forest in Unova has developed a unique use for their wings, likely in response to competition with Pansear and Simisear for tree space. These heracross are able to bat their wings rapidly to deflect or even outright mitigate weak fire-type attacks! Lostlorn heracross have also been recorded using this same strategy to deflect pollen and power-based attacks from enemies. Looks like those wings are more versatile than we thought!
Much like magikarp enthusiasts have their own league for the time-honored sport of magikarp jumping, many trainers pit their heracross against one another in massive tournaments meant to test which 'mon has the best throw strength! These tend to become quite the spectacle, drawing large crowds and lucrative betting opportunities. The current reigning champion, three years running, is an especially beefy specimen named Heracles.
Because in the wild heracross prefer to sleep in large logs, bushes, or under tree cover, it's highly recommended that trainers provide their heracross with a large blanket; the feeling of being covered while asleep is said to put them at ease.

Gonna say this right now. one of the best ways to get some worldbuilding inspiration:
Go to an educational type of attraction..
Seriously, go to a local museum or someplace educational. Living history? Natural history? Art? Aviation and aerospace? Zoos and aquariums even? Doesn't matter, whatever you have available. Do the local stuff as well.
Now try applying some of the stuff you saw and learned about to your fictional world's. It doesn't have to be exact: it could be loosely based on or inspired by it.

Can I hear more about your angelfish? They were my favorites as a kid, but we stopped getting them after one ate the rest of the tank except for a very traumatized neon tetra
Absolutely i currently keep 2 Marble Angel fish (note the marbling effect on the scales instead of the typical uniform stripes) in a small community with neon tetras, peacock gudgeons and dwarf Gourami.
They absolutely love thick foliage in their tanks especially sword ferns that they can duck in and out of. My two are given dried insects as treats at least once every couple days so they stay entertained.
To be fair they are typically quite aggressive fish but ive found that moving things in their tank, keeping them well feed and with a variety has kept them both happy and engaged with the humans outside their tank... so i guess my theory on angels is that theyre a very intelligent fish and when they get bored thats when destruction happens. Hope it helps and if you were to ever get back into the hobby im always open to give advice

I moved my tank but now I've run into a problem - the shelf its on isn't level. I can try to level out the shelf but I'll have to redrain the tank and I just don't have the energy nor do I want to stress my fish out again so soon. I intend to upgrade the tank in a few months so hopefully nothing will happen until then.

my fellow aquarists out there, I am a newbie setting up my tank and my dang driftwood will absolutely not stop floating
only the big pieces, thankfully the two smaller pieces are already settled. the triangular shaped piece, I’ve been trying to waterlog for days now by keeping a big rock on top. the new longer branch is in a better position, but it’s also slightly floating when I’d rather it not do that. that one I had soaked twice in the bathtub for several hours for two separate days.
Tumblr media
I’m wary of trying to put in my incoming live plants (aside from my floaters) when the driftwood hasn’t sunk yet, and I’m definitely afraid of putting fish in when the wood isn’t stable. I’d appreciate any advice regarding pretty much anything. this goes for the water too, I check the parameters and all I have to really fix right now is the pH and hardness, otherwise it seems the tannins from the wood are leaking into the water and making it brown?
