Flower Symbolism in Trigun

Okay so I've been going insane in the last few hours since the new episode of Stampede and I needed to share my very incoherent thoughts.

So here we go: (please excuse my grammar, I'm typing this up in an absolute craze)

Please note, there are major spoilers here

[Plant in context to Trigun will be capitalized btw]

I want to start off by pointing out the whole idea with calling the creatures that Vash and Knives are as 'Plants' and 'seeds' in the first place--that in itself is so much. Not to mention Noman's Land is a desert plant with little to no flora at all.

The idea and symbolism of life and rebirth presented with the idea of plants. Like how flora are usually the first type of lifeform to come back post mass extinction events. How plants are primary producers in the food chain, how life couldn't be sustained without plants giving up oxygen, food, and converting the sunlight into energy/sugar. Despite being giant moth flower humanoid creatures, the Plants in Trigun are doing essentially the same thing. Except they aren't renewable and they might also be sentient.

In addition to that, in media, seeds are usually a representation of hope. And in this case, a seed pod carrying the hope of humanity. I've been likening it to dandelion seeds. I don't think our group of guys were the only space-fairing fleet that was sent out from Earth.

I don't know how much of this symbolism is intentional and how much of it is completely accidental, but boy howdy is it there and am I going to eat it up.

Geraniums!

First off, the most obvious one is geraniums. The flower is very much thrown into our faces. What does it mean?

Okay so there's like 400 types of geraniums out there, they're not like a specific species- and when people say 'geraniums' it usually also includes pelargoniums which are a different genus. But you're not here for me to monologue about flower classification-

Well, operating under the assumption they're using the most common type of red geranium, which, funnily enough is not a geranium but rather a pelargonium. Pelargonium x hortorum. Commonly known as zonal geraniums or garden geraniums. I don’t know if I even need to expand on the idea that Vash and his story (and the Plants in general) are represented by geraniums. If the red coat wasn’t already a giveaway, I think the newest episode definitely makes it very clear. Well, first off I think it's interesting that they’re not ‘true geraniums’ (different genus, same family). Like how Vash and Knives look human but aren’t ‘true humans’.

(Did you know geraniums can reproduce asexually via their roots by just…sprouting a new plant? It’s called clonality. Anyways yeah, I’m too lazy to expand on it but there it is. You can probably see the connection I'm trying to draw here)

Furthermore, let’s look a little bit into what geraniums represent. So according to the vast knowledge of the interwebs (I will put the links I used at the bottom.) geraniums are “attributed the powers of love, peace, healing, elegance and spirituality. They mostly have desirable symbolizing meanings, including fertility, health, joy, protection, frustrations passing away, and true friendship.” Red geraniums in particular are attributed to protection and ward against evil., spiritual beings and saints. “The geranium flower was a symbol of prosperity in Egypt, longevity in Japan, and immortality in China”. *Stares at Vash and Knives*. Gods…immortality…saints. Alright Nightow, I see you.

Look, I’m not done here. DURING THE VICTORIAN ERA geranium took on a slightly more negative meaning. Envy, deceit, folly, foolishness and stupidity. Although they were also seen “as ‘horticultural bourgeoisie’ and a sign of ‘crudeness and thoughtlessness of taste’. Geranium became a symbol of industrial mass culture.” This was probably unintentional (and if it is intentional, holy fuck.) but the idea that Earth in Trigun was destroyed by the folly of humans because if mass industrialization? Hello???? OKAY.

There’s just so much history with geraniums. I’m STILL not done. Let’s talk a little about geraniums and Christianity, yeah? You know, the thing that Trigun is chock full of symbolism of.

So first off, tradition. (I am not Christian, nor do I know much about Christianity, I just did some research on the topic so feel free to correct me.) I do believe there is a tradition to buy and gift red geranium on Good Friday? (I can’t find a very credible source about this, just some blog posts so idk) And the red is to represent the blood that Jesus sacrificed for the people. How he was beaten and bloodied because of his love for the people. How…he was given a purple cloak that turned dark with blood while he was mocked.

Sound familiar?

Do we want to talk about Vash’s red coat turning black in the latest episode? Or maybe how traditionally dying Plants are red and healthy ones are blue? But Vash keeps himself covered in red?

Now, here’s an interesting fact. Did you know, wild geraniums look very different from the ones people like to commonly grow in their gardens? This is the spotted cranesbill (Geranium maculatum), the most common wild geranium. Look, maybe I’m stretching it here, but cultivated Plants vs independent Plants, anybody?

Anywho, not the point I was trying to make. Did you know another common wild geranium is called the Saint Robert’s Geranium? Robert’s? While no one really knows who the ‘Saint Robert’ the flower is named after, it has a very fun symbolism. Check this. The seed pod of this flower supposedly looks like the beak of a stork, which had people believe that they could help a couple who wish for children with fertility when used as an amulet and placed under the bed. cough Ep 11 pregnancy scene cough. Apparently, medicinally they’re also used to staunch blood flow from wounds. Despite that, in certain regions, it was seen as an ill-omen plant associated with death because snakes would often hide in its leaves. Snakes? Like…in Adam and Eve? Like as in temptation? As in Knives and Vash?

Okay last bit on geraniums. Just a little on the colors. In episode 11 of Stampede we see the giant plant root monster thing blooming flowers. I have assumed that they are black geraniums, aka Geranium Phaeum

aka mourning widows. Of course, I could be wildly wrong but the meaning of this is fun so hear me out. While there doesn’t seem to be a direct meaning for black geraniums, we can clearly draw some conclusions on the common name for this flower. Like seriously, mourning widow? They’re also known as dusky cranesbill and black widow. Obviously associated with death (and grief?) and apparently maybe marriage??? Doesn’t help that geraniums can be considered a traditional bridal flower too. I think they’re also associated with melancholy. Anyways, on the other hand, blue blooms usually symbolize calm and peace while purple blooms symbolize royalty, accomplishments and admiration.

So in context to the blooms we see at the end of ep 11, grieving for the loss of someone (Rem, his memories), rising to his Plant roots (haha get it?) and being ‘at peace’.

HEY LET'S TALK ABOUT DOGWOOD

So I remember reading somewhere that he’s named after a singer or band or something but– His name is so close to dogwood that I could not pass it up.

Dogwood is a blooming tree that seems to have a representation in Christianity. There’s a legend about the tree and Easter. So apparently, the cross that Jesus was crucified on was made from Dogwood, because of such it was cursed and blessed. Cursed to be small so it can’t be used to make another cross but blessed to bloom beautiful flowers at Easter time.

The flowers of the Dogwood trees always bloom with four petals, like a cross, the center like a crown of thorns. Each tip of the petal is indented like it's been pierced with a nail and discolored like it was stained with blood. So goes the story.

I think it's interesting that Wolfwood’s name is so likened to this flower/plant and I don’t believe this is unintentional. LIke it’s right there. Cursed by the Eye of Michael to grow too fast, blessed to be strong and hard to kill. Is/bears the cross that brings Vash to Knives in the end.

Lilies (and other Flowers)

So, I personally think the plants look a lot like lilies. And lilies are commonly attributed to the virgin Mary. They typically represent purity, innocence and rebirth. They are often gifted at mourning flowers as well and are one of the most popular flowers at funerals.

Either that or the blue-eyed Mary flower, which has less meaning attributed to it other than its name.

hey guys, this is a post about side order and what we can somewhat gather about it so far. this'll be a long one, so hang tight. i've seen others vaguely talk about these ideas, so i decided to go all-out.

this image is of what i'm going to refer to as the 'landscape of thorns,' which is a 'long-term nuclear waste warning message.' these being used to sway humanity from intruding on highly dangerous sites.

as certain kinds of radiation can stay toxic for thousands of years, a warning of the dangers of this plant were needed. non-linguistic messages were attempted at first by a report from the sandia national laboratories, one of the three development and research laboratories of the department of energy's national nuclear security administration. {DOE, NNSA} the aim of this series of messages were to warn later visitors to any waste site. they recommended that messages include each of the following, gradually increasing complexity.

"1} Rudimentary information: "Something man-made is here"

2} Cautionary information: "Something man-made is here and it is dangerous"

3} Basic information: Tells what, why, when, where, who, and how

4} Complex information: Highly detailed written records, tables, figures, graphs, maps and diagrams"

the issue with worded messages is that they're unlikely to be comprehensible in thousands of years. considering how much the english language has changed, and will continue to evolve, would those of the future be able to understand what is being said? because of this, symbols were also considered.. but another problem arises with that. no symbol will be universally understood to mean one thing, even something such as the jolly roger. {☠️} using it to warn for risk of sickness, or general harm would serve useless as time passes. especially nowadays, while the jolly rodger still is seen as a danger symbol somewhat, is used more commonly as a cool design thing.. at least in the USA. and again, that's the problem. no symbol is universally known for one thing, no matter what.

i believe it was also a thought to not warn at all, and just leave it there.. but that questions ethics.

eventually, physical markers were explored, giving ideas such as the forbidding blocks, rubble landscape, the landscape of thorns, and a few beyond those. these ideas carry similar characteristics to each other.

in 1992-1993, a poll was issued by the zeitschrift für semiotik of tübingen germany, asking the following question:

"how would it be possible to inform our descendants for the next 10,000 years about the storage locations and dangers of radioactive waste?" and received answers such as artificial satellites, atomic priests, and 'ray cats.' i'm going to further talk about ray cats, as i think, considering the themes, it would be a good opportunity for side order to delve deeper into li'l judd, and his current whereabouts or motivations. as it's very vaguely hinted that he owns grizzco industries, and with that presumably dead fish in the trailer, it could be explored. i hope they won't make it weird though, as you know.. the whole thing with mammals has been a bit bizarre..

anyway, it was suggested that a species of cat should be bred that changes colors when exposed to radiation, so essentially a living sign of nuclear threat. as things such as nursery rhymes have been culturally significant in some way for many, many years.. in 2014, the musician 'emperor x' was commissioned by the podcast '99% invisible' to create a song about this idea for an episode about long-term nuclear waste warning messages.

whatever this fucker is. they could be completely done with grizzco, but who knows.

{edit 8/23/23 i've been told it resembles the bake-kujira. the ghost whale which is accompanied by "weird birds or fish."}

giving us the song '10,000-Year Earworm to Discourage Settlement Near Nuclear Waste Repositories {Don't Change Color, Kitty.}' the gist of this track being "if the cat turns bright colors, run!" and was designed to be "so catchy and annoying that it might be handed down from generation to generation over a span of 10,000 years."

so, themes of radiation are very likely to be present. this brings us to our next section, the coral bleaching.

as you may know, healthy coral has beautifully bright colors. this is due to microscopic algae known as zooxanthellae, which lives inside of the algae's polyps. it is also a major source of food, and nutrients. coral bleaching occurs when coral reefs are under stressful conditions, a huge one being climate change, which i will get deeper into that specifically. if the waters it lives in heat up too much, the coral will begin to expel this zooxanthellae.. leaving it completely white, and exposing its bone-like structure.

while bleached coral isn't quite dead, the aftermath of said bleaching makes it much more susceptible to disease and malnourishment due to lack of nutrition. if the waters stay too warm for too long, or if the bleaching is too extreme, the coral will die.

coral bleaching is an ongoing issue, and efforts have been made to conserve and regrow the coral reefs.. this brings us to a shorter section, but one worthy of a mention.

coral cloning. coral cloning is a phenomenon where a small bit of a healthy coral is cut, and grows into a full piece. it helps when this, sometimes miniscule, piece is placed next to another. this speeds up growth almost rapidly. however, it is not too easy to grow, and this method isn't totally fool-proof. coral requires very certain conditions to flourish, such as not being placed on an open ocean floor, but instead in an already established habitat. also things like water temperature, pH levels, pollution, all can stunt growth. this is a very vast oversimplified explanation, but i believe you get the picture. have you wondered why i am bringing this up? here is why..

am i saying this directly implies cloning? not exactly. it's an interesting thing to note, though, as you might know how octarians {NOT OCTOLINGS!} are born.. via severed tentacle. coral can sometimes be born via severed piece. i'm not going to go into this much more, as it's kind of an out-there comparison. do with that what you will.

continuing on with the radiation and infectious theme, i feel i should mention ultraviolet radiation. the sun produces these UV rays, of course, and they can be good in moderation. if it's too much? it can be absolutely killer. you guessed it, ultraviolet radiation does play a part in warmer waters, which aids in bleaching coral. however, that's not all.. the state of inkopolis square we see in the side order trailer could very well also be due to residue of nuclear radiation from the human society's many wars. before humanity's fall, natural disasters were more prevalent than ever, and we still don't really know what exactly happened besides the massive flood. the sea levels rising was the reason the great turf war, the deadliest war to strike inkadia, even happened. things like oil spills could possibly be going on too, as in some photos, you can see this black liquid.

i'm going to state the obvious and add on that oil spills are incredibly dangerous to marine life, and that includes coral reefs.

remnants of human life have not disappeared from inkadia, or anywhere in this world dominated by marine life. it's not far-fetched to say they could still be affected by anything else left behind, climate wise.

the landscape of thorns has not been built, to my knowledge, but maybe it was here. this could be a rediscovered nuclear plant, who knows. especially as certain kinds of radiation, again, can stay hazardous for upwards of ten-thousand years, and possibly longer. you may have caught that ten-thousand is an important number for multiple reasons, especially with the possibility that this octoling is eight. the human race has been extinct for longer than ten-thousand years by this point, but it's something to remember. but there's still questions.. where do pearl and marina fall now? what is their role? is this an infection only targeting octolings, and other octarians? what's going on with marina? only time will tell, yeah?

im sorry i just found out that you're being called a hypocrite over enjoying chicken nuggets and i'm just. birds eat other birds all the time. like raptors, obviously, but also like. a domestic chicken will 100% eat chicken if you give it to them. if one gets injured you will have to quarantine it because the other chickens will peck at and bite open wounds. "free range vegetarian chickens" are fake; if theyre outside they're eating bugs, which last i checked are animals. it seems humans are the only animals that have qualms eating other animals and its wild. bro you're an omnivore. you have teeth designed to rip and tear flesh. what do you think we originally used tools for if not hunting? we would not be where we are if humans were herbivores because a diet of plants is very energy intensive!! the breakdown of plant material is difficult! most ruminants regurgitate their food to preform more mechanical digestion again to help!

like, all the power towards you if you don't want to eat meat (i mean, i personally literally cannot eat most meats because i can't digest it properly at all) but like dont make others feel bad about eating meat??? there are people who have to eat meat because they can't get all the nutrients they need from plants. including but not limited to b12 which is extremely important and we cannot synthesize it so we must obtain it from animal products.

vegetarians i can understand. vegans are weird to me; yes big industries treat their animals poorly but cows likely enjoy being milked because they've been bred to produce more than their calves need and being full of milk is uncomfortable- ask a lactating woman. chickens don't really care if you take their eggs. sheep *need* to be shorn because we've bred them to produce lots of it and without shearing it will not stop growing and cause problems; they can heal from nicks and wool is heavy and hot - its the only fibre that will keep you warm even if it's soaking wet. bees do not mind that we take honey; they make honey because its energy dense so they can survive through winter and keep warm, but domestic bees do not need as much as wild bees because we help them keep warm in the winter so they don't need to expend the energy to keep themselves warm.

these creatures have been domesticated for hundreds of thousands of years! they rely on humans! its not a bad deal for them, either!

"So you're saying that you'll provide me guaranteed food and shelter from the elements and predators, and all I have to do is give you some of things I already make anyways? And you'll make it so my offspring produce more of this thing you want so you will be continually incentivized to take care of them? @oligopsoriasis I don't know if you're still interested in the farming thing, but, regarding your land efficiency vs. energy-efficiency thing:

My impression is that, when designing an agricultural system, the basic trade-off is labor against land area, i.e. you can reduce labor inputs by using more land and reduce your land footprint by sinking more labor into it.

In this framing, I think industrial row-crop monocultures are extensive rather than intensive, i.e. they sacrifice land to save labor as well as/rather than energy to save land. Sustainability and higher absolute production might well not mean using more land.

A lot of the articles and papers that talk about modern sustainable systems trumpet them as Actually Much More Efficient than “industrial” agriculture, when, really, they’re just opting for the other end of the ancient trade-off -- they lead with productivity statistics calculated entirely on land use, and quietly note somewhere down below that “of course, this takes vastly more work, and is devilishly complicated to maintain...”

But that doesn’t mean they aren’t a better bet! The point is, there are trade-offs to be made other than technology-i.e.-what-we-have-now/primitivism. It means we’d need more greenhouse-minders and algae-scrapers, yes, maybe even more people growing beans in raised beds, but that’s Jobs, not a return to peasant agriculture.

(I’m not really considering the original thing about hunting, meat just doesn’t seem likely to ever be efficient, except on marginal lands, where it couldn’t support modern population densities, alligators or no.)

[some rambling speculation about historical intensive systems:]

Anyway, historically, intensive, labor-heavy, small-land-footprint systems make sense if you have a lot of labor and not a lot of land, and include the various clever Native American polyculture systems (the chinampa, the three sisters), but also potato-farming (Ireland, before the famine, being prototypically labor-rich and area-poor: a densely-populated, highly fertile area in which people had to subsist on glorified garden-plots), modern Dutch-style greenhouse fruit/veg/cash-crop cultivation, maybe what the Cubans do. Wet rice cultivation and terrace-farms are possibly in this category. “Vertical farming”, if it’s not a nothingburger, probably will be too (multistory buildings are capital, capital is dead labor, lotta walking up stairs, etc.).

(Classic Geertzian involution is when you can’t get any more intensive, so you have to sink more people, more bodies, more hours into it, without hope of improving productivity per head.)

My conjecture is that intensive systems make more sense when you don’t have draft animals to give you access to a larger area and incentivize more drivable open layouts and planting/harvesting techniques.

Ok so, I really adore your interpretations of the characters??? Like how you draw them has so much personality. The way you draw them I just see Cronus as one of those touchy feely lots of physical contact people- not in a creeper or lewd way, but the type who always has an arm around people he likes. Or reflexively holds onto backpack loops and tugs on people’s sleeves.

Then Kankri is there living off of coffee, vegan yogurt, and spite. He’s totally the type to have researched the hell out of different coffees until he found one or two small business growers that fit his ethical standards and bulk buys from them exclusively. Drank it black until somebody asked why and got the mother of all rants about the Sugar and artificial sweeteners industries, then Cronus dug up a sugarcane plant from the side of the road in the middle of the night and gave it to him. And yes, I do think Cronus stealing stuff off the side of the road is a regular thing with him. Bet he’s the type to steal street signs for his room too. Yknow that picture that got popular a while back of that person who stole a whole traffic light? Cronus.

(Also I maybe sorta headcanon Cronus as Asexual and trying way to hard to hide it)

The way you draw Dirk makes me think he’s the type who just… doesn’t listen to his body at all. Lactose intolerant? Eats dairy anyway. Hasn’t slept in 48 hours? About to make that 50. Food? If he must - proceeds to eat One (1) Jello cup. Feels a migraine coming on? He can probably take medicine for that and keep working on the computer. Just… Disaster Human. The only one who beats him out for drinking more energy drinks is Sollux who drinks Monster like water.

Then you draw Dave as just… The Babiest Boy. Like he’s going to use his first paycheck on a Lego star wars death star play set and give it to John when he’s done so he can pretend he’s super cool but still see it. Liked powerpuff girls before the reboot. Wears hoodies and jackets because he gets chilly. Also dumb. Learned he was allergic to bees, immediately threw a stick at a wasp nest in revenge.

Also you draw Vriska like the type of person who’d put fruit punch or apple juice in a fancy glass and pretend it’s alcohol to look ‘cool’ on the internet. Convinced Tavros the grocery store brownies she was eating were weed brownies just so he’d freak out.

I just… really love these little teenage degenerates, and how you draw them makes me remember why I like Homestuck so much.

Linora was getting away with it. Considering Chace kept away from the tower for months at a time these days, staying only a few days each visit, the only person who regularly cared what she did couldn’t bother her. No one else paid attention to what Linora did. For all Grandfather’s bluster, he never went out of his way to seek Linora out. Father spent most of his emotional energy on pretending he could perform his duties exactly like he did before the diagnosis.

Mother never even asked Linora if any of Bennie’s accusations about the crushed plant or his cuts were true.

To add insult to Linora’s injuries, Father replaced the plant. Then proceeded to give Bennie more. Very quickly, Bennie’s room was overrun, and his toys stopped moving from the shelves or chests. It left a foul taste in Linora’s mouth to watch Bennie engaging in small talk with flowers. Or that Linora never once saw Bennie turn on the UV lights given to him to care for them, yet they still thrived. Or that Linora could sense Bennie’s new “friends” did, in fact, talk back to him.

Linora only got gifts on holidays. Jaeger never got anything extra either. What made Bennie special? Why did Father ask the Putzkammers for help in making Bennie happy? Why not her? Why never her?

To top it all off, the nightmares were getting worse.

Well, at least for a while. That was…until the night Linora snuck into Bennie’s room while he slept. She couldn’t slice him again, she couldn’t do anything that would leave a noticeable wound or bruise. But her deep dives into anatomy and biology gave her a well of knowledge to draw from.

After her fun, Linora warned Bennie that absolutely no one could know. Or she would make the next time worse. In the morning, Linora snuck out of the estate and got one of the employee canteens to give her a bunch of ice creams on a stick in Bennie’s favorite flavor. During the afternoon, Linora read Bennie stories and kept him in her lap as he silently licked at a pop. The whiplash between the night before and that day kept Bennie’s mouth shut.

Linora had another “session” with Bennie the next night anyway.

The morning after, Linora played board games with him.

Pain, affection, resentment, love. To and fro, over and over.

But Linora knew better. She had to know better. She was going to get caught. She lived among telepaths. Would Father really never scan Bennie or Linora? While Linora trusted herself not to draw Grandfather’s suspicion, did she actually expect Bennie to not? She also couldn’t imagine how her fun could possibly end in any other way than the worst kind of consequences for her.

A warm coffee milk in hand, Linora leaned against the doorframe that led from the kitchen into the dining room. Dinner was hours ago, but the dining room’s current occupant didn’t arrive until half an hour before. Jaeger sat at the table in his chair (custom made to match the original set), sipping at a glass of wine as he ate.

Watching Jaeger eat simultaneously fascinated and unsettled Linora. He never ate with his hands for any reason, everything required cutlery or chopsticks. Sandwiches, flatbreads, hors d’oeuvres, slices of bread, it didn’t matter. Linora saw him using caviar forks and seafood picks on grapes before.

Many times, he also let his telekinesis do most of any work for him. The fine manipulation Jaeger had was both impressive and terrifying. Linora watched Jaeger telekinetically separate squab meat on his plate. The flesh cleanly peeled and set aside, ready to cut into bite-sized chunks—and leaving perfectly spotless bones behind

It was not hard to imagine Jaeger being able to separate more than just food. And he was very good at it.

Swallowing a bite, Jaeger’s eyes met Linora’s. “Thank you.”

Oh. Of course. And so it began.

“What’s so strange about not wanting to touch food, by the way?” Jaeger asked, leaning back in his seat.

“Napkins exist,” Linora informed him as she sat across from him.

“And prevention is preferable to cleaning afterwards,” he disagreed. He picked up his glass and sipped. “So, what is beginning?”

Linora frowned at him, and then stared into her coffee without answering. Several minutes passed in silence as she drank and he ate. Only the gentle tapping of cutlery made any sound.

“Father is getting worse quickly,” Jaeger said, unprovoked, his deep voice soft.

Linora shrugged. “We knew he would.”

“But he can still call Chace in an instant.”

Mid-sip, Linora hesitated. Gradually, she lowered her cup and stared back at Jaeger with an arched eyebrow.

“Father told me before that no matter where Chace goes, they’re always connected. Or at least, it doesn’t take him any effort to reach Chace.”

“…Even when…Chace isn’t in the tower?” Linora asked, a sinking feeling in her stomach.

“That’s what I meant,” Jaeger affirmed. He took a bite of caramelized sickle root, chewing agonizingly slowly, and allowing his words to hang in the air before he continued. “I’ve seen it before. No matter where Chace is, Father can project to him. It’s not just that they’re biological siblings. Though, that’s part of it. He says it has something to do with how many shared experiences they have. Similar memories, similar…lots of things.

“So, it really doesn’t matter where Chace goes. There’s no such thing as too far. Unless something actively blocks the connection, Father can reach him.”

Through this, Linora finished her coffee. She stared at the bottom of the cup, watching the residue of beige liquid pool to one side or the other as she tipped it back and forth anxiously. As Jaeger finished, Linora swallowed hard. It wasn’t difficult to catch his meaning, and she didn’t know how to respond.

Tapping his fork on the side of his plate idly, Jaeger grinned at Linora. “Just curious, have you ever watched television?”

Blindsided by the drastic shift, Linora curled a lip in confusion. “Wh…Of course I’ve seen TV shows.”

“No, no, not just shows. No collections,” Jaeger said. “I mean an actual broadcast, the way it’s originally intended to be.”

Her face twisted in greater confusion. “No, of course not. Nothing is broadcast here. Why would I…?”

“It’s rubbish,” Jaeger said sourly, shaking his head. “It’s absolutely rubbish. Some worlds I spend time in, the screens are low definition, tube-filled scrap—loaded with pops and scratches. Muddy, awful-looking and sounding stuff. And there’s barely five minutes of showtime in-between a bombardment of insipid advertising.”

While still lost as to why the conversation took this turn, Linora smirked in amusement. “So, television really is as bad as television shows say it is?”

“Completely intolerable,” Jaeger said, adding a genuine laugh. “And people eat it up. They cannot wait to spend hours doing nothing but watching vomit-quality drivel and repetitive prattling about junk food, medication, and faulty products.”

Linora didn’t hate hearing Jaeger talk about something other than philosophy or himself. She propped her elbows on the table, and distantly wondered why she could still smell her milk coffee so clearly with her cup empty.

“Once you’ve had a better experience,” Jaeger continued, finishing his wine. “Then it’s simply not the same any other way.”

Her eyes thinning, Linora leaned her jaw in her palm. Wracking her brain hadn’t given her any ideas as to where Jaeger’s thought process led them.

Jaeger’s posture shifted, he also leaned his head against his hand. “I like very…dark fiction. If I ever read or watch it.”

“…Me too,” Linora said.

“I doubt quite like my taste,” Jaeger said with a subtle shake of his head. “The kinds of things where…I’ve ‘asked’ servants to get it for me, then made them forget they did.”

Linora raised an eyebrow at this. “So, a sex thing?”

Jaeger’s brow hardened, and his eyes went cold. “No.”

She smirked at him, doubtful.

Frowning, Jaeger glanced off. “…Still. It’s not enough. The only thing that really, really scratched that itch…” His icy eyes shifted back to her, then a smile began to reform. “When I was twelve. One of the maids, she mistook a collection of mine for trash, and threw it out.”

In surprise, Linora sat straighter. She glanced at the doors to the dining room. There was no one in sight.

“And it made me…so…angry,” Jaeger continued, his lips tightening. “I just…saw red, and…I made her regret it.”

Linora’s brow tightened in surprise. “You…did what?”

“The brain processes everything,” Jaeger said, his voice lowering to a rumble. “Even pain that doesn’t exist feels like it does if the brain says so.”

Jaeger could do much more than anyone told Linora he could. His smile took on a distressing, new color in her mind.

“That scream…” Jaeger whispered. “Was so primal. So…”

Linora was apprehensive that she understood exactly how good it must have sounded.

Her brother’s face twisted fiendishly. “I try to read, or to fantasize, or write…Anything else is just…broadcast television.”

Now things started to fit together. The entire conversation came into focus, and the picture it painted of Jaeger was something so much more vile than maybe anyone else had ever seen of him.

Linora murmured, “You know. You’ve known the whole time. And you’re not going to stop me.”

Jaeger chuckled. “No. No, I’m not. I have no reason to stop you. No matter where I am, I can get pieces of the rush you get.” Gradually, Jaeger leaned forward, grinning. “Such as…when you grabbed little Bennie’s throat. And squeezed…but wouldn’t let him pass out. Over. And over. Again.” His smile widened in excitement. “You, Linora, are an artist. And I can’t wait to see what you do next.”

When Jaeger described her actions out loud, Linora’s cheeks flushed and she swiveled her eyes away from his gaze. Shame at the ugliness of what activities delighted her wrestled with pride in Jaeger actually complimenting her. He rarely complimented anyone. “…Something’s wrong with you. You’re broken.”

“Me? You’re the one doing it.”

“You like to watch.”

“Well. You’re convinced you care about him.”

“I do,” Linora snarled. “I-I make it up to him. I don’t do anything permanent. You don’t care about anything.”

“I care about plenty, just not how you choose to torture Benjamin. I could change my mind, if you want me to.”

Linora tensed, recoiling at word “torture.” That wasn’t the right word, she didn’t torture anyone. It was just roughhousing, nothing serious. Lots of siblings roughhoused. She didn’t appreciate Jaeger’s language.

Linora then forced herself to grin in the face of Jaeger’s threats, and pushed herself to her feet. “You could. But what would you do if you had to go back to broadcast only?” She stretched across the table and reached over Jaeger’s plate. She plucked an uneaten cherry tomato, and popped it into her mouth, smirking in satisfaction as the juice filled her mouth. “I don’t know. I don’t get not wanting to use your hands.”

Jaeger’s smile faded, and he ran his tongue along his gum line. “Cute. That would’ve been an appropriate metaphor…if you were using your hands just then.”

As though a button reset reality, Linora was suddenly back in her seat. Clattering of plates caused her head to snap up, and she briefly met eyes with Jaeger as hopped out of his chair. From seemingly nowhere, one of the staff stood next to his seat, gathering his empty plate and dirty utensils onto a tray. The smell of milk coffee lingered in her nose, and Linora looked down to see her cup still half-full.

“Good to see you, Linora,” Jaeger called over his shoulder as he walked out of the dining room. “Have fun.”

As he disappeared through the door, Linora brought her cup back to her lips in a daze. An unconscious smile came to her as she drank. She would have fun. Lots of fun. Like the kind of things her nightmares kept showing her. It was now a challenge. Just how far could Linora go while Jaeger stayed only an observer? How many doses of sedative could she sneak out of R&D before anyone noticed? How often could she fit her hobby in a week?

No, no, moderation. Moderation. She needed to focus on her studies, too. Her studies, and continuing to improve herself in the fortieth floors.

A swell of anticipation filled Linora. She thought about the one moment in her and her older brother’s “conversation” when he genuinely faltered.

Hello, cow loving nerd here- prefacing this with just. I'm not trying to be rude, in case I come off that way. Cause I'm very overenthusiastic and sometimes that comes off wrong! I just love cattle and talking about cattle and cattle welfare, and I get way too excited whenever cattle are mentioned, even passingly. So. Just wanted to share a bit of info about cattle welfare!

Even tho the treatment of cattle is often viewed as the worst thing ever, the cattle industry is actually one of the best (if not the best- I'm not sure if any niche industry is regulated better) regulated livestock industry! I highly recommend looking up Temple Grandin- she's an autistic woman, and she has done a ton to improve welfare for cattle! It's really cool- she even developed humane methods of slaughtering cattle! She also viewed cattle as living individuals, rather than simply property! I'm always quite sad when people assume that the cattle industry is bad for the animals, cause it also means that not enough people have heard about her and her accomplishments- which isnt anyone's fault ofc, she's just really cool and I wish more people knew about her!

(Again, I hope this doesnt sound condescending or anything- I just always like chattering when people mention the cattle industry, cause it's so interesting that it's gotten such a bad reputation to the non-cow obsessed public, when in reality chicken and pig industries are far more unethical- unfortunately, no one has quite stood up for them in the same way that Temple Grandin stood up for cattle.)

(Also, every industry does need pressure to do better, so pressure should keep being put on them! But I know that worrying about things can be mentally draining, so I always find it nice to know when animals arent being treated horribly.) as for my cattle industry take being bad, i truly do not think that the industry is as inherently bad for the cattle as it is for the environment, but even then, the cattle industry only makes up four percent of the greenhouse gases polluting the atmosphere. most of it comes from architecture and industrialization, but that’s a whole other can of worms!

i just figured since you mentioned that the cattle industry gets a bad wrap, i would like to deflect some of that negative energy (towards the cattle industry) to my arch nemesis: lettuce:

lettuce is 99% water. i feel like we know this, but the rest of lettuce basically has no nutritional value, and it’s truly a waste of fresh water to produce. in fact, according to water calculator.org, a single salad has a water footprint of about twenty-one gallons of fresh water! that is twenty one gallons of fresh water going into something that will not fill you or give you energy!

don’t get me wrong! i love healthy foods, but lettuce being 98% water means at minimum that water has to go into it just for it to exist, plus extra water for it to grow! for literally nothing!! even if people struggle to comprehend the ethics of the cattle industry (at least from an environmentalist standpoint), the nutritional value speaks for itself!

an average cow will drink 10-15 gallons of water a day. the lifetime of that cow will result in them drinking somewhere in the ballpark of 75,000 gallons of water in their lifetime.

now, according to the university of arizona, it generally takes about 40-50 inches of water per acre to grow a good, desirable head of lettuce, or, to generate a good harvest of lettuce crop.

one inch of water over one acre equals about 27,000 gallons of water. AN INCH. OVER AN ACRE. THIS MEANS AT 40 INCHES OF WATER (the low end of water recommended for lettuce growth) THAT IS 1.08 MILLION FUCKING GALLONS

FOR AN ACRE OF LETTUCE

there are still people in the US and all around the world that can’t get access to clean, fresh water. it’s a resource that is running out and quite literally is THE resource that fosters life, and we are letting people go thirsty, and letting the planet heat up and dry out, so we can eat CRUNCHY WATER??????

about 15-20 cows can be kept alive for THEIR ENTIRE LIFESPAN with enough water it takes to grow A SINGLE ACRE OF LETTUCE.

not to mention beef is high in iron and protein and vitamins and tastes a hell of a lot better than crunchy plant water.

anyway, tldr: fuck the lettuce industry, don’t get mad at cattle farmers for trying to make a living. the climate is changing due to corporations cutting corners and polluting the environment just so they can use cheaper materials. the cattle industry is not bad, and i very very much loved this anon ask.

Feeling like I need to do a big brain dump here. Feeling extra overwhelmed this morning with anxious and depressive thoughts. Seems like when I rest is when the worst of it rolls through. Maybe that;s okay. I've been sitting through it today. I've been doing things anyway because not doing them would add to my anxiety. he depressive feelings are ones of intense loneliness. Its hard to feel okay with anything for some reason and I cant seem to find my calm or grounding. I've been watering my plants. I cleaned myself, mostly, even though I ran out of energy. There's still always stuff to do. I wish things were different but I have no idea how to actually change them or myself. I feel like I'm in a stuck point. I do always want to do my best and manifest the best and keep a high vibe but its hard sometimes. I'm learning to untangle my feelings of worth with my productivity. I'm still valid and valued even when I'm not feeling like I'm receiving it. Just because I'm numb to feeling it doesn't mean its not there. I'm at this point where I might need more help and guidance than I know how to ask for. And I'm getting weary of it always being up to me. I don't think its too much to pine for someone to check up on me consistently. It feels like I'm a bit discarded.. a bit uncared for. Like I'm expected to give 100% but who am I to expect the same of others? Feeling exceptionally small and weak today and it makes me afraid and uncomfortable. I suppose I am perfectly in my right to talk about "bad" things too. These "bad" things seem to be real for me right now. I shouldn't shy away from any of it, good or bad.

A thought has crossed my mind lately to see if I should commit myself to a mental health facility just so I can get some space and some true rest from it all.
