kindaichi had a small puppy crush on yahaba for all of five minutes before yahaba turned around and picked a fight and kindaichi realized that was way above his pay grade

yahaba's aggression and fearlessness is bc he's an overlooked middle child who was never properly supervised growing up

and on the team he's STILL an overlooked middle child!!!!!!

okay no scratch that all the second years are just basically overlooked middle children and THAT'S why the entire second year gen is complete and utter chaos

makki photoshopped kunimi's ':3' face onto the smug knife cat photo and uses it as a reaction pic

makki has, at some point, photoshopped everyone's faces onto an equivalent meme pic

on mattsun's and yahaba's birthdays the team puts all the presents for them into one big pile and have them unwrap each one by one and guess who the present is for based on what it is

so far they've got: a skincare set + facewash headband with bunny ears (mattsun), an oversized hoodie with an embroidered knife in the center captioned "try me" (yahaba), a clip-on bunny tail (mattsun - "to go with the headband," makki had explained quite seriously, while watari lost his shit and kunimi put his hands over kindaichi's eyes), and 2 concert tickets for Full Throttle4, who are punk and goth and emo and make pop punk rock (yahaba, obviously)

(yahaba, who doesn't realize he has a type: "i appreciate these, really, but if all of you can't go - " oikawa: "oh no, none of us are free that day anyways! except kyouken-chan :))" kyoutani: "i'm WHAT now")

also. SO many jokes about iwaizumi going to be a surfer boy when he tells them about california.

iwaizumi: "for the LAST time, i'm not even going to LA! i'm going to irvine!" mattsun, who has Zero Knowledge about ca geography and just likes fucking with iwa: "that's so cowabunga, my dude. make sure you hang ten when you're out there"

kyoutani and watari are gossip buddies. watari is the type who knows all and sees all. kyoutani is just skulking in the background and ppl are too terrified to ask him to leave so he usually ends up overhearing all the juicy shit LMAO

they know about aaaaaaall the third-year drama that not even their upperclassmen know about

during one of kyoutani's and yahaba's arguments watari blasted "true love" by p!nk and it was REALLY fucking funny watching them go at it with "YOU'RE AN ASSHOLE, BUT I LOVE YOU" in the background

(they didn't even notice until makki showed them a recording)

when kyoutani and yahaba go to the concert they both get really fucking nervous to the point where five minutes in they end up arguing over whether it counts as a date

yahaba: "you know it's not a date unless the two people going want it to be a date, right?" kyoutani: "i do want it to be a date!" yahaba: "what" kyoutani: "what"

at some point they hold hands bc "too many people, we don't want to get separated" and then they just. never let go for the rest of the night LMAO

(and at the end, yahaba asks kyoutani if he really meant it. if kyoutani really wanted this to be a date. and kyoutani grumbles and scowls but he finally goes "yeah, why do you think?" and yahaba laughs and pulls him in closer)

Happy Birthday, Nerd

Oikawa loved working on his birthday. Who didn’t?

He had originally taken the day off – the other guys were busy anyway so they could only celebrate at night, which he didn’t mind. He had wanted to sleep in, visit his parents, his old team, walk through the neighborhood. Iwaizumi would pick him up and they’ll go out to eat with Matsukawa and Hanamaki. Nothing special.

But then, his boss called him, saying his wife was in the hospital with only an hour left to live. No one else was free to take the shift so Oikawa took pity on the balding man. He knew his boss just needed an excuse to spend the day with his sweetheart. He probably would’ve taken the shift regardless of the lie because he was a nice guy.

The job wasn’t his ideal first job, but it paid bills and student fees. He worked at a video rental store that had mostly indie and alien films, which appealed to his interests somewhat. There weren’t many customers at any given time – curious teenagers, shut-ins who were forced to go on a walk, and actual film fanatics. Oikawa tried not to engage in them too much – he still had a reputation to uphold – but he did enjoy discussing alien theories once in a while.

There were no security cameras so Oikawa was allowed to go on his phone and slack off. He called Iwaizumi, knowing very well he was still in class.

“Iwa-chan! Can you believe it? I have to work. On my birthday.”

“You said yes to it. You could’ve said no.” Iwaizumi had no sympathy for him. He never did.

“I thought you’d skip class and keep me company!”

“Ha! You wish. I pay attention in lecture, unlike you.”

Oikawa looked up, watching a group of businessmen walk pass. “I can’t help it if class is boring.”

“Well, too bad. Are you done yet? My break’s almost over.”

“Don’t forget to pick me up tonight! Where are you taking me?”

“You’ll find out. Talk to you later.” Iwaizumi hung up. He didn’t pick up when Oikawa tried calling him again.

He put his phone down, resting his chin on his folded arms with a sigh. There was a TV in the corner for them to play films, but it was usually broken. He tried fixing it once, which resulted in giving him an electric shock. He tried petitioning for the boss to get a new TV, but if their sales ever went up, he’d rather take a raise.

His first visitor came in the afternoon. Kindaichi and Kunimi entered, still dressed in their school uniforms, eyes wide with wonder. Oikawa straightened up. “Kindaichi! Kunimi!” he exclaimed. “You came to visit me?”

“Hello, Oikawa-san!” Kindaichi greeted him with a slight bow. “Iwaizumi-san told us to. We brought you a birthday present!”

“Happy birthday,” Kunimi said, handing him a small bag. It was identical to Kindaichi’s.

“Aw, thanks, guys! You’re the best.” Oikawa accepted them eagerly. “I’m going to-“

“Iwaizumi-san said not to open them yet,” Kindaichi said quickly. “He said to wait until tonight.”

“That’s no fun!”

“It’s what Iwaizumi-san said,” Kunimi said. “We have to go now. Bye, Oikawa-san.”

Shortly after their departure, Kyotani and Yahaba entered, dropping off similar bags. Watari appeared after them, followed by a few of Oikawa’s upperclassmen from high school. Finally, Iwaizumi arrived at the end of his shift, bag swung over his shoulder. “Ready to go?” he asked.

Oikawa glanced back at the next worker, who was supposed to stay until closing. He nodded, grabbing his own bag. “Let’s go! Oh, I can’t forget all the gifts the others gave me!”

“Careful! Don’t break them,” Iwaizumi cautioned when Oikawa grabbed the bag containing them.

“They all said not to open them. You told them all that, right? Is this some master plan?”

Iwaizumi didn’t reveal any information. “You’ll see.”

He drove him to their favorite restaurant, Hanamaki and Matsukawa already seated, waiting for them. The dinner was quick and full of jokes and memes, as expected. When dessert came around, the waiter delivered a large plain cake with icing along the bottom. Oikawa frowned at it, glancing up at the others. “Do you three not have enough money to get me an actual cake?”

“You have to decorate it, dumbass,” Iwaizumi said. He gestured at the small bags gifted to him earlier on. “Open them. Look inside.”

Oikawa opened one bag, carefully shaking them onto the table. Small cookies shaped like aliens emerged, each one with a letter on them. With the help of his friends, he managed to spell a message out, the remaining cookies sticking around the outside. Iwaizumi lit a candle and stuck it in the center of the cake. “An alien cake for an alien nerd,” he said, smiling.

“And because we don’t have enough money,” Matsukawa added, “we baked them all from scratch.”

“You’ll be able to taste our love,” Hanamaki said. “Enjoy it while it lasts.”

Oikawa grinned, taking his phone out. “Come on! We need to take pictures!”

The cake was quickly devoured among the four of them. They went their separate ways afterwards, Iwaizumi driving Oikawa back to his dorm. He got out, shouldering his bag and grabbing the gifts his friends had gave him. “Thanks, Iwa-chan.”

“No problem.” Iwaizumi waved him off. “Get out of here. Happy birthday, you nerd.”

Oikawa closed the door and headed toward the gates, showing the guard his student ID to be allowed in. His phone went off a moment later and he fished it out of his pocket, flushing at the message.

I’ll see you tomorrow. Today was with friends. Tomorrow, though, was a different story.
