thank you!!!! they are my most self indulgent au but also definitely the one i tend to keep most to myself. i want to tell their story so bad but i’m not skilled enough of a writer even though i really want to write it anyway 😭😭 i will try my best to explain some of my thoughts though!!

as you can see from the tags that this is a ng+ role swap au! the basic premise is that akira gets sent back three years into the past and prevents goro from entering the metaverse, accidentally assuming goro’s original role instead in the unjust game.

for most of the story, you are just following goro akechi after he got sent to tokyo on probation (for ACTUALLY assaulting shido on that day btw) and things seem to go like any other role swap au!

goro arrives at leblanc and meets sojiro, wakaba and futaba (wait a minute…) before he starts attending shujin academy.

his criminal record still gets leaked but at least his homeroom teacher seems to be trying to help him (hold on a minute…) despite being so late on his first day.

he even runs into the detective guy from the shibuya station earlier at his new school with two sisters! one of them seems to also be a transfer student just like him (something doesnt seem right huh).

so maybe things are a little different after all!! akira made a lot of changes in those three years. 🤭

i’m still working out a lot of the details especially later in the story, as well as decision on whether or not i want to completely rework some parts. i definitely need to figure out exactly what akira would change and how they will affect everything else though. i also need to design new metaverse outfits for goro and sumire (kasumi’s is being refined atm and akira’s white mask fit is already done).

re: kasumi, she is joker’s sort of accomplice in this au!! she knows that he is behind the mental shutdown and kind of blackmails him into letting her join him. she doesn’t do any of the actual mental shutdowns (akira refuses to let her no matter what) and instead just keeps akira out of life threatening danger as his back up.

oh and before i forget, this is an au with the “joker has a palace” tag attached. 🥰the phantom thieves visit his cathedral instead of maruki’s lab after the new year.

So I was playing The Sims 4 and I automatically remembered posts about what it would be like if the boys played Minecraft and Roblox, so I asked myself: How would each of them feel and react playing The Sims 4? I'm a new follower and I love your posts!

YES this is so cute omg, also to anyone else sending asks I SEE THEM I will get to them, I got like 35 of y'all in my inbox and I LOVE YOU ALL just be patient, thank you mwah. Anyways, the headcanons below da cut, here we go.

Kazuma Kiryu

Fascinated by The Sims. Mostly watches the kids play it, but they end up roping him into playing eventually. Needs some help at first, it takes time to learn the ropes, but he's pretty good at picking up on it. Says things like "Ah... I see." a lot. Out of all the games the kids have shown him, The Sims seems to stick the quickest.

Majima Goro

Takes a million years in character creation alone. Like decorating things or dressing the people up. Total chaos lord, if something catches on fire in game he just gets confused. A lot of saying "What do I do, c'mon, tell me!" really quickly and loudly. Talks to his Sims, says things like "Darn it, I told ya to go HERE."

Akiyama Shun

Makes his Sims hit on everyone. Actually a bit of a chaos gremlin but only in games like The Sims specifically. Once he realizes that game is basically him making a bunch of tiny people do funny stuff, he will proceed to do exactly that. Will always pick THE most styling outfits for his Sims.

Saejima Taiga

Squints a LOT, especially when trying to read options in the charater creation menu or when a Sim has choice bubble pop up. When he sees a Sim isn't happy, he says things like "Huh? Didn't I just feed ya?". His first playthrough is super messy and the house he builds is totally not functional so it'll take him a few attempts to actually get going in the game.

Tanimura Masayoshi

Honestly the most basic of all the boys at Sims. Plays it straight, pours in exactly a reasonable amount of hours, struggles an average amount. It's not his most favorite type of game to play and he prefers to watch others play it as he finds their choices more interesting than his own.

Ryuji Goda

He's all about that house building, babey. Probably ends up building himself some monstrosity of a tower and is like "Look what I made!". He actually kind of likes The Sims a lot once he realizes it's supposed to be a little chaotic. This makes him actually relax more, whereas with other games he can get a little frustrated when something unusual happens.

Nishikiyama Akira

Probably the most likely to make his Sims look like himself and/or people he knows. If not people he knows directly, then something like a celebrity or famous character. Pretty good at matching his Sims to people's appearances, although he mostly cares about the character creation than anything else. Might not even play the game beyond making characters honestly.

Daigo Dojima

Very precise gamer. House has to be spick and span, all the Sims have to be happy before he turns the game off. Fond of the decorating or dress up aspects and likes to see his Sims make friends or start relationships. Treats it more like a dating sim than anything.

Mine Yoshitaka

Sort of like Daigo but he treats it like a business management Sim. His Sim is going to be the very best like no one ever was. Won't really tell anyone he plays the Sims as it's kind of his guilty pleasure game. Prefers having as few Sims as possible in one game so it's easier to manage them all.

Tatsuo Shinada

Best Sims player to watch in a livestream of all the boys. Total goofball, tons of "What's this option do?" and general fucking around and finding out with his gameplay style. Makes the most random looking Sims. Naturally comedic when he plays it. Tries super hard to romance other Sims though.

hiii!! 3 things..

1) for your mask expression art where goro's mask is confused, you said you took inspiration from atsv? what is that, if i can ask?

2) in persona 4 arena , theres a shadow suppression unit named labrys and she essentially only wears yasogami's highschool uniform so if you look at labrys and aigis, the idea of shadow suppression unit goro works very well because his school uniform is nice enough that he can hide his princely (& maybe later darker?) outfit and appear more human when theyre in public (excluding ears of course.. those can be passed off as headphones however).. i just thought thatd be something you would find interesting

3) in norse mythology there's the myth of loki killing baldr, so skadi traps him below the earth with chains made of what's holding his 1st child fenrir down as well, and poison from a creature (i cant remember the exact creature unfortunately) but he stays there until the ragnarok (the end of the world) and his wife, sigyn, who puts up with all his mischief and the fact that 4/6 (or 4/5, depending on what iteration you look at) of loki's kids are not sigyn's at all (hel, the horse he gave birth to, fenrir, and jormungandr are the ones not sigyn's.. nardi and vali slash just nardi is sigyn's) . but anyway sigyn holds a bowl and catches the poison so loki doesnt suffer, and every once in awhile the bowl fills with poison so she has to go outside to dump it out, and loki withers in pain because while she is gone the poison drips down his head and it causes earthquakes.. but anyway. this all reminds me of engine room (being trapped & in pain, etc) and its also.. loki. so sigyn as akira and loki as akechi art would be super duper cool.. i encourage you to look into both loki and robinhood's myths because robinhood era-myths also include the mention of mordred, the incestous son of king arthur who kills his way to the top yet his revenge fails (reason unspecified, it can be assumed he was killed himself or robinhood took his revenge for him) and his outfit is suspiciously similar to that of the black mask's, from the horns to the black getup.. mordred is akechi, akira is robinhood, and robinhood's merry band of thieves are the PTs.

1)ATSV is Across the the spiderverse ! that movie inspired quite a few things about my art style, that also just happen to work really well with p5s visual motifs since the comic book inspiration and heavy use of colour blocks and halftones, as well as they make the spiderman masks eyes emote, since they have them on for a big portion of the film, and its the cutest thing ever

2) Ive seen Labrys' design! she always reminds me of miku if im completely honest BWAHA but yesss he could possibly hide it very well, also the fact that he always wears gloves could hide his fingers too :D

3) havent touched too much into norse myth besides the surface level knowledge of it that i obtained thru osmosis, mostly from friends who were into it. also i loveeeee binge reading wikis and link hopping (did it with gnosticism -> ended up inspired and made the ophiomorphos piece hehe) but its such a spontanious thing for me, i shall keep it in mind tho :D i did wanna at some point read up on hereward more specifically, since out of his 3 personas him is the one i have not a single clue about but i....forgot...i really dont give a lot of love to hereward sobs

And for the first time ever, I'm gonna talk about the Beta Version

It all started with Chariot Makoto and Lovers Haru. I'd just read an unfinished fic with Lovers Makoto and World Haru, and well, I wanted to try something like that

At first it was a Fool Futaba, so it was goober first year with their only friends being the gayass third years. Magician Akira, for the hilarity of sassy cat

Yusuke became the Fool when I got attached to the idea of Yusuke and Haru being friends, from another fic again. This one had them get legally married to give Yusuke groceries before staging a divorce. So. Foolsuke

Cap, my bestie, of course suggested the brilliance of Devil Akira, so. I needed a new Magician, someone to be the straight man to the chaos I'd created. So, Goro

Anyways that's the history of it lemme go off a bit

So it's Foolsuke, his Thief name is Jester. He's not as strong of a personality as Joker, but he makes up for it with his drama, his poses, his long speeches of Justice and Rebellion. He wears the Shujin uniform normally for the most part, but his blazer is always open

Magician Goro is a bird in the real world, but human in the Metaverse. His Thief name is Crow, though his bird form is a robin. He has the prince outfit Goro has in P5, and instead of the Monabus, there's a white limo, a bird emblem on the hood

Chariot Makoto is tired of being told how to feel, what to do, how to live. She's stepping out of her sister's shadow, since she's already been cast out after lies spread by a certain teacher. Top grades, low attendance, leather jacket and uniform pants. Her Thief name is Knight, and at the end of the day, she's perhaps a little too self-sacrificial

Lovers Haru feels alone for so long. When her dad calls, it feels like he's not really listening. Would he even believe her, if she told him about how a certain teacher treats her? She's tired of not standing up for herself, but to gather the courage, she just needs someone, anyone, to hear her call for help. Or, for her to witness an extreme... Her Thief name is Eros, and she hates seeing good people hurt

Emperor Futaba has been lied to her whole life. She thinks her foster father Madarame is a good man, who just needs a hand with programming sometimes. She thinks her mom died naturally. She thinks she doesn't need anyone else in her life. Only when forced to witness the bloody truth, does the rage within burst free. Python, that's her thief name. She'll make sure those that cloud the horrible truth are paid what they're due

Priestess Hifumi plays Shogi, attends student council meetings to improve her reputation, and trusts her mother isn't up to anything. Then, weird things happen to the students around her, and the nicer items in her home disappear. Kaneshiro's strings control Shibuya like a puppeteer, and it takes her too long to see the strings lying across the Shogi board, pulling at her peers and mother. She goes by Rook. A great planner, she's more than eager to prove she earned her wins after all

Hermit Ryuji lies awake, remembering the smell of booze, the shouts of a bastard man, the pained scream of his mom. He feels the phantom pains where his right leg used to be, and is now a stump that ends at the knee. On good days, he streams video games, with a digital avatar. On bad days, he can't forget that he's the reason his mom isn't around. He asks for help from people he's never met, and opens up for the first time since Tae Takemi first took him in. Compass guides them from his floating ship, his prosthetic a cool ass pirate peg, and he feels helpful when he shoots canonball boosts at his friends

Empress Ann is the face of teenage beauty, both in Europe and Japan. She, hates the flashing cameras. Her parents are up to something behind the flashes, and she's ignored it for too long. Though, her deadline approaches fast. They want to scurry back to Europe, take Ann from school and have their doll of a daughter model for the highest bidder there, escaping their sins in Japan. Ann becomes Puma, a thief who wants to bring back the passionate parents she remembers

Justice Yuuki shoots two palace leaders. His podcast is toxic, and his audience grows by the day. Behind the scenes, he's an attack dog, a chain wrapped around his neck, held tight by Shido. He tricks the Thieves, has them call him Gamma. On November 20, he looks Yusuke Kitagawa in the eyes and pulls a trigger

Faith Kasumi Sumire is a dancer. She's a Shujin for ballet, moving with such grace and delicate passion that she's destined for greatness. Only, something's wrong... But that's not a big issue, Dr Maruki is helping her recover after she lost her sister.

Kasumi makes a decision. Puts away the glasses that don't help her, ties up her brown hair. When the Thieves ask her what she wants them to call her, she answers with Scarlet

Okay I'm sorry about the long paragraphs here's some little bits for the other arcana

Hierophant is Tae Takemi, with her experimental coffee shop, and her adopted son

Fortune Shinya. He stands in the shadows at the arcade, tossing a few coins. Says he knows a way to change your future. He never messes up the script given to him by his mom's strange boyfriend.

Strength Morgana. He starts human, and when he finds himself again, he becomes Monster Cat

Hanged Man Kawakami. She got into some bad stuff after believing she led to a kid's death

Death Lavenza is a recent med school grad, who's younger sisters call themselves drug dealers, when really they just help Lavenza with some basic pharmaceutical stuff

Temperance Sae. A teacher, who didn't believe her sister over her coworker. She feels like a failed teacher, and failed sister

Devil Akira! He runs the school newspaper, known as the Tea Party, it's. Unofficial. He hangs out at the gay bar, Crossroads

Tower Kaoru Iwai. He posts an ad looking for a high schooler to teach him how to be more sociable. He says it's to get girls, but he's building up the courage to try to reach out to his dad

Star Yoshida. He sits in the park, playing chess with anyone who will sit and talk with him. He has many regrets, and honestly just wants to meet someone who will talk with him

Sun Ohya. A reporter who feels like she's lost her voice, doing what she's been told, not reporting what she believes. Teaches Yusuke better ways to phrase his wording and shit

Moon Shiho! Local discord mod notices the weird kids in her class being extra weird, and decides to be their social media manager. She's the one that asks them to help save their Empress, her girlfriend

Judgement Sojiro. Still working as, an agent of sorts, he's highly trained in interrogation. He feels weird about using his skills on a high schooler...

Persona 5 - Red String SoulMate AU

Everyone has a string tied around their ring finger. It's about one metre in length. Everyone's string is vibrant red, and is taut around their finger. If 2 soulmates come together, their strings entangle, and meet at the end, this doesn’t bind them, and simply walking away undoes it, but it's verification. If your string finds its end, you've found your soulmate. If your soulmate dies, your string undoes itself and falls off, losing its vibrant red colour.

One day Akira is walking around Bumfuck Nowhere, Saitama, picking his little brother Ren up from school. It's about a week before the Shido incident. Somewhere, in Tokyo, a young woman pushes her sister out of the way of a car, and gets hit. Akira's string undoes itself and falls on the ground when he's not looking. Ren is the first person to notice, and it sends Akira into a small spiral of not communicating verbally, thinking the one person he's meant to be with has been lost before he ever met them.

Akira gets sent to Tokyo. Starts the PT, meets a young red haired girl, a string tied around her finger. it's really fucking unfair, because he's enamoured by her. She's cute, fun, but so straightforward and clear. She has her goals, and she works towards them with everything she has! She has no interest in her string until she's finished her and her sister's dream.

One day, he goes to a TV station, meets a young man who also doesn't have a string. Goro and him share a bond, those unwanted by fate. Unlike Akira though, Goro never had a string. One day in a bathhouse, Goro reveals he was born unwanted, unlike Akira who was just unlucky enough for it to have happened too.

Looking at the man in front of him, the one who's intense glare starts to falter when he talks about his lost mother, the one who's eyes shimmer with tears when he admits out loud that he's unwanted, Akira starts to realise that fate is bullshit. Because if nothing else; He wants Goro Akechi.

He has a problem with whatever god set it in motion, so much so that he's thinking of shooting it in the face.

Once Maruki takes over, Akira, Kasumi and Goro go into his palace. Watching the video that exposes Sumire's true identity, he notices something. She doesn't have a string. Kasumi does though. As he watches her ribbon fall from her head, her hair unravelling to reveal her true self, he notices the string fall off too, not losing its colour, since it was fake anyway. He's forced out, asked to meet his friends and see if they're happy.

That means he has a whole week. A whole week to reflect on the idea of growing up with not only an inferiority complex towards your sister, but every single day Sumire would see that string missing on her own hand. Kasumi was the one people wanted, and that string was proof.

So he goes into the metaverse. Transforms into his true self, and takes off his gloves. Carefully, bit by bit, he cuts it up, leaving individual strips that he sows together. 3 long, vibrant red strips of fabric. He tests it to make sure his plan works, when he leaves the metaverse, they're gone, when he comes back, he still doesn't have his gloves (He'll have to think of a new finishing pose) but he does have 3 red strips. He ties one to his ring finger. When he leaves the metaverse, it's gone.

January 8th comes around. It's the day he and Goro go back to save Sumire. Negotiations break down, Sumire transforms into her outfit and draws her sword on him, begging him to stop, to let Sumire die. No one wants her anyway.

He can't fight her, and he won't. Goro tries to walk away, but he grabs him by the hand and drags him to her. It confuses her just long enough to not swing her sword, and just watch him.

He walks over to her, Goro in hand. Goro staring at his gloveless hand, a strip of red catching his eye and making him speechless. All 3 of them standing together, a metre apart, Akira pulls out the second string. He pulls Goro in, and ties it around his finger. Akira stays silent, if he says anything, it'll be stupid or he'll cry, and he's not chancing either. Goro stares in disbelief.

Akira grabs Sumire's hand, luckily she's right handed, so her left hand is not holding a sword meant to stab him. And ties the third strip around her finger.

He grabs the ends of all 3, and all 3 of them know what he's trying to convey. Even Goro can't deny what the tears dripping out of Joker's mask means.

The metaverse is based on cognition, like a gun hurting a shadow because it feels real.

Akira holds his palm out, while the 3 ends tie together.

AHHHHHHHH this is a bit late but i just have to say that i love your blog so much??? The fic? Emaculate. The fanart? Spectacular. The discussion and points brought up? Scratches that itch in my brain.

And god that new chapter was amazing like the changing clothes scene? Amazing. Its such a cool way of adding Lore tm to the outfit mechanic in game (i wish everyday that goro had a swimsuit outfit for me to equip :")) Ann casually being a firebender? Stunning. That sojiro and goro scene? Broke my fucking heart. I can't thank you enough for the brainworms you have fed me i feel like you characterised both coffee dad and pancake son so well. The whole goro lashing out and when it doesn't go the way it normally goes and he starts panicking due to someone actually fucking caring for him? Broke my heart, hit close to home. And i love how you wrote sojiro as well??? Like a sojiro who really is so kind and caring but has regrets and mistakes but still tries his damn hardest to care for people who need it the most? Idk man i love sojiro's character and his confidant story like it made him a character whom i actually would love to just have a coffee and chat with in real life anyways wonderful amazing job

the changing clothes scene was so fun for me to write. actually--originally, it was supposed to be ann changing her metaverse outfit altogether (since she's clearly shown to be uncomfortable in her current one) and i was just going to leave it at that, but... it felt like i'd be pandering, if that makes sense? i want every lore change in ex machina to feel like it's Important, like it really matters. if i started changing things just because i wanted to willy nilly it'd quickly devolve into an entirely different story altogether. (rest assured though ann Will have an outfit change, it'll just be at the right moment + right explanation)

ann being a firebender is such a neat way to put it actually HELP the most she can do right now is summon fire to her palms--she's kind of like a human lighter, if that makes sense? she can individually set her fingers and her entire hand on fire if she concentrates, but she can't throw it around like zuko might in atla (.. not yet, anyway).

i'm glad you liked the sojiro scene. it's one i'll always keep near and dear to my heart. i'm aware that ex machina isn't... an easy read, by any means, considering how little it sugarcoats the issues brought forth in p5's plot, but i don't want it to be an easy read. i want people to consume it and take time to digest it. if they want something more lighthearted this isn't it--though i'm sure i'll end up writing something sillier in the future. (been playing around with a no powers/college university au in my head, it isn't the most inspired but shenanigans r cute...)

sojiro, at his core, is a kind man. i read it somewhere on tumblr or twitter, but it's very telling that out of all the social stats you can build when hanging out with him, it's kindness. logically, proficiency makes more sense--you're learning the tools of the trade, you're building a skillset that'll no doubt serve you well into the future--but you get kindness. because sojiro sakura is a kind, kind man. it's important, and it must be established clearly. i'm glad i executed it well enough <3

(HAH OF COURSE THEY'LL GET THEIR BATH SCENE. making it my personal mission to make every hangout even more homoerotic than canon already depicts--i don't know if you saw it underneath the absolute ocean of asks littering my page, but i drew out their rank 1 hangout + their subsequent call. it was a lot of fun. check it out if you haven't <3)

ok here is My reasoning for trans thieves:

akira - obligatory “protag has some sort of gender going on” solidified by the fact that he cross dresses. at least some sort of gnc quoi going on here. also he just has the vibes of a trans person. what is that gender? no idea i’m going with some flavor of multigender and/or genderfluid personally but whatever floats your boat. akira is akira and that’s all you really need to know

ryuji - the hair bleach (yes he’s a delinquent BUT it is taking control over himself.) and the shitty jagged looking haircut(? to me at least.) and just the general “fuck society i need to make myself into a person that i’m proud of” thing. eff yeah ryuji go get it king

yusuke - yusuke. genuine answer though. transmasc purely because of the hoodie he wears at the beach. this is what started it in my mind but i think he is so trans. i think madarame lets him go on t which yusuke is very grateful for but deeply conflicted about after The Reveal. i was going to write something about this but my attention span is bad so i gave up

makoto - honestly i rag on her a decent bit but i read something w/ nonbinary makoto once and went “yeah okay this makes sense i think”. so thank you mysterious fic writer who i forgot about. the perfect good girl shtick could be some sort of repression considering who her family is

futaba - gamer girl hacker. come on. but genuinely yeah futaba is very very trans girl. it is the vibes of her i think. also when she warms up to the other pts and starts to be more her true self. ALSO when she goes out with akira and tries to be comfortable existing in public spaces. she :)

haru - i don’t have a lot of thoughts about this one tbh but i’d buy it. her thief outfit certainly has some gender in it i think, though maybe that’s just my stupid shitty little brain speaking

akechi - wow dri not calling him goro this time? yeah idk why i did that earlier either it just came out. anyways something something having to hide your true self under layers of deception. akechi goro is a trans allegory, just with a lot of murder attached to him

sumire: i think you could make the case for it being an extra layer for how badly she wanted to be kasumi, who was the perfect sister she couldn’t be

but in general being a phantom thief is inherently transgender because of (alleged) defiance of societal norms and (allegedly) showing your true spirit. thanks for coming to my ted talk

Switching places for a day HAD been Goro's idea. He'd been rather enthusiastic over the prospect when first discussing it over the phone even. But now, that excitement had been snuffed out by his growing disdain. After finding out the shattering revelation that the boy he'd called on that day in June was not only someone who managed to keep pace with Goro and his skill level, he had to discover he was the Phantom Thief leader. Goro had decided to cut contact with Kurusu after that. There was no sense continuing whatever budding relationship was slowly blossoming between the two of them. It was better that way. He had his goal to look toward; he couldn't falter now.

And yet, fate had other plans.

After being chewed out by Shido for the Kaneshiro case--he'd LOVE to see that insufferable man try and win an election without his abilities to cause mental shutdowns, his entire breakdown business going belly-up as backers pulled out--he'd found himself in the familiar company of the only person who ever seemed to want him around. Goro truly had no one. Something he was painfully reminded of every time he plastered on his princely mask and cheerful grin. Ever the unwanted child, but Kurusu had declined all his offers to hang out with his other friends just to spend the evening with him once more. Goro didn't know how to place that emotion. He didn't want to either. He wanted to cut Kurusu out of his life. But something kept drawing him back into the other boy's orbit.

Goro reputation was on a steady decline. Fame was a fleeting thing, and the thieves were rising into the spotlight of his former glory. If he didn't know who Kurusu actually was, he'd easily have blamed him and despised him further for his notoriety. As much as Goro knew he could, the REAL problem was the media. Kurusu wasn't malicious enough to wish the backlash on him. He'd seen how it was effecting him over the last couple weeks since the Kaneshiro incident hit the airways.

Goro's apartment was sparse, to put mildly. It was a place to return to so he could sleep, change clothes, bathe, and occasionally eat when he wasn't going out for his meals. It wasn't a HOME. There were few personal effects. Despite how long he'd lived in the apartment after his last group home, it hadn't gained much in the sense of someone actually residing there. Kurusu was the first person he'd actually invited inside.

❝As I told you before, I'll be dictating everything.❞ Accessories wouldn't be too difficult, Kurusu and him were about the same size anyway. His complexion was so much paler than Goro's though, but it wasn't as though he needed much makeup either. His hair however, seemed to be an UNTAMABLE beast. No matter Goro's efforts, Kurusu's hair refused to cooperate. Soft, shiny curls. Adding more volume would be fine, but he already had enough to make Goro envious. He had to style his hair just to get natural looking waves, and Kurusu woke-up and hardly had to do anything. ❝Nobody will notice you're not really an idol. So many can't see beyond the superficial. You'd be surprised.❞

No one ever cared to see beyond the IDYLLIC mask he wore.

He ran his fingers through the thick black strands. There was much to work with, it just didn't want to work with him. It seemed Kurusu's hair could rival Goro's own stubbornness too. Seconds of the comb going through his dark hair had it caught tightly in his mop. Goro pulled, and then tugged harder until the handle snapped off. He stared, dumbfounded, his lips parted in a silent gasp.

❝My hands get through but not a brush?❞ It seemed the outfit he selected would need to do most of the work and make up for how uncooperative Kurusu's hair was. But that still left the brush stuck on the side of his head. He delicately tried to remove the teeth from the curls, but it refused to slide off. ❝I may have to cut it free...❞

My Review of Synthesis, by ANTITHESIS: a Joker/Crow Roleswap Zine

I wasn't paid or asked to write a review of Synthesis, but I've been seeing a couple mentions of it here and there, so I figured I'd do a write-up of my thoughts!

What is Synthesis? Synthesis is a fan-made visual novel based off of and inspired by Persona 5 made for the ANTITHESIS zine. In it, Goro Akechi is the leader of the Phantom Thieves, and Akira Kurusu/Ren Amimaya is the "Detective Prince." The plot starts a few days before the Phantom Thieves steal Okumura's treasure, and there are four different endings to the game, with 2+ hours of gameplay.

My Thoughts This was the first visual novel i've ever played, and I feel that Synthesis was incredibly well put together. There were no glitches I ran into (until one at the very end, which I will talk about later) and the character art for Joker and Crow, in particular, were both beautiful, imo.

It took me around 2.5 hours to get all four endings, but I'll admit, I was speeding a bit to get the True Ending. (I did also get bad ending #2 twice, so...)

All in all, I don't think Synthesis would necessarily be disappointing to you unless you're expecting Crow and Joker to have sex on screen. Spoiler alert: they kiss once, and nothing more.

There's a bit of subtext surrounding the pressure that is put on Joker to always have a perfect facade up in public, specifically surrounding any relationships he has, and there is a small mention of Joker hypothetically getting outed. (as a note on this: the proceeds from ANTITHESIS are, in part, going to an LGBTQ+ charity, so i think it is a bit more understandable that there is some additional focus on something like that) I do think that the mentions of Joker's need to have a positive public facade is quite interesting, especially considering that he's in Crow's normal role for this game. No, this definitely does not make me want to write a character study on Crow. Anyways.

Good Things to note!! - I felt that everyone was in character, and Joker and Crow in particular felt in character considering the roleswap. - save and load features in the game work perfectly aside from one thing i'll note later - you can toggle between Joker's name being Ren Amimaya and Akira Kurusu - if you're replaying the game for a certain ending, you can skip all previously read dialogue until you reach the next choice to make - JOKER HAS THE FUNNIEST LITTLE METAVERSE OUTFIT HE LOOKS LIKE A JESTER I LOVE IT - goro ponytail. that is all. - aside from the language and some mentions of suicide (which is expected, it's Persona 5) Synthesis is entirely SFW! - goro says fuck

Things I felt weren't perfect - although we get some info on Joker and Crow's backstories in this AU, i wish there was more info! I want to know how Joker ended up working for Shido, and I also wanna know more about how Crow's backstory in general!! - I understand wanting to only have sprites for the main characters, but it was a bit unsettling to have dialogue options for a character that seemingly doesn't exist. (pretty sure that's common in visual novels tho,,, so maybe i just need to get used to it) - there's no full-body shot of Crow's outfit for this AU in the game, only a chest-up view - you can only get the true ending after you've gotten a bad ended and unlocked the New Game+ option, which makes sense from a coding standpoint (there are special dialogue options you Cannot Choose if you're not in the New Game+ option) is a little frustrating because you then need to replay the entire game. so thank god for the skip dialogue feature. - there is one glitch with the save/load feature that is specifically with the New Game+ option: you can't really save and load it. If you do, it makes it impossible to get the true ending, so if you're after that ending, you either need to sit there for ~2 hours for a full playthrough or use the dialogue skip option

Last Thoughts I'll be the first to admit that Synthesis probably isn't the most groundbreaking fangame out there, but I still find it incredibly charming and entertaining! I loved seeing the new outfits that Joker and Crow both had and I really did enjoy trying to get all the endings! Some of the dialogue near the end genuinely had me shocked (in a good way) and finally getting the true ending was SO SATISFYING.

ah fuck i left this in my drafts. ive been on an ann tirade today though so this is convenient.

sexuality: butch lesbian and i honestly kind of hate every other interpretation for no good reason besides umm. Well they make no sense and suck and are incredibly stupid. like im not gonna seriously argue with people over something as irrelevant as lgbt headcanons but i still think they’re incredibly wrong.

gender: transmasc butch as gender. the thing about ann and i was talking abt this on my priv twitter earlier but like she literally isnt fem. like atlus makes it a point to show that ann sucks at being girly what with the flirting/acting stuff. also any outfit (that isnt an overtly sexualized costume) ann wears has a jacket with it to cover up with even the summer ones. she also tends to wear oversized shirts, and those opaque tights, and converse. i find it kind of insane how atlus does a better job at making her androgynous than a lot of fans do? i keep seeing really nice art of ann but she’s in a puffy pink dress and it just makes no sense to me. i think for her in particular the way she dresses is fundamental to the character and people kind of just close their eyes and ignore that bc umm shes pink and likes hearts ❤️ or something. like pink and hearts cant be masc. its stupid. boys can giggle and go mmm yummy and yaaay. anyways she/he pronouns.

a ship i like: annshiho canon. butch4butch. theyre very different types of butch but still veryvery butch. and while Yes i would have liked more shiho content in the game i think people could also just pay a little bit more attention to things for extra shiho context. i know her very well actually.

brotp: fuckin. all the phantom thieves really but im particularly fond of ann/akira/ryuji, ann/ryuji, and ann/goro.

notp: ive covered this but i think ann with any man at all is like, so stupid its comical. i particularly hate ann and yusuke because like. no dude. bro. ann would hate that. theyre wonderful friends but think about how yusuke would be in a relationship for two seconds and then think about anns complicated relationship with modeling and performance.

a random headcanon: less of a headcanon more of a thought but i really REALLY wish her relationship with her parents was explored more. like her confidant is mostly sweet, her desire to make her heart stronger to protect girls (which, SO butch of her, hello?) was really nice. but. holy fuck ann needs to quit modeling and start working on her relationship with her parents in a more healthy setting. i really wish her confidant was about opening up to them and saying hey, this teacher sexually abused me, and you werent even here for it at all, and that sucks! you know making her heart stronger by working on herself and making connections because TURNS OUT SUPPORT IS CRUCIAL TO YOUR ABILITY TO DEAL W THINGS ACTUALLY.

overall opinion: i can get so worked up about her but in my defense someone has to. i love her more than anything back when i kinned she was always at the top of my kinlist. she isnt fem i hate when people portray her as fem.

mordred and goro are like arsene and akira.. like everything follows to a T. its not just half based stuff like some of the other thieves' personas are (as much as i love the thieves og personas,) akira also parallels greatly to robin hood, who unlike arsene, had a group of thieves with him (most notable one being little john etc) ..

but anyway. mordred and goro affectionately bickering back & fourth because mordred finally saw the fact that goro has a whole outfit of justice based on him 💀

mordred and goro just casually comparing the horrors of their childhood and everything (mordred, the incestous son of king arthur) (goro akechi, the bastard son of shido masayoshi) and everyone following behind them like what the fuck.

mordred and robin hood bickering because they ARE rivals and they are just goro and akira let's be real here. the PT's turning around and telling goro and akira that's what they have to put up everyday with them two

mordred (human form. bc.. i love the human forms thing i came up with. it makes sense giving that in p1-p2(+p3 if u wanna argue the dark hour isnt inside a tv/phone app) all the personas are summoned in the real world. it also just makes sense because a lot of the PT's personas are real people.. johanna, captain kidd, etc) & the thieves sneaking into shido's offices together because goro's still puking up goop for some reason and they need wakaba's research to see if something's going on .

ann, human-form hecate + human-form-mordred, & goro all go shopping together..

idk all the personas and the thieves going bonding with mordred and goro because everyone knows theyve basically never had friends

God, it's hard to find proper personas for characters, so every time there's a persona that works Very Well, canon or not, it's a joy

Hell yeah!!! Goro gets to bicker playfully and really talk about the shit that went on comfortably!!! I would love to see the reactions of silent shock of all the Thieves following

Ough... I don't see an awful lot of human forms of personas, so it's a treat to see some detail on them

It would be so chaotic and enabling, and I love it

Please... I would love to read that and read about Goro processing all of these friendships, it would be so damn sweet..
