Many ant species coordinate the departure of their queens and males (the only flighted individuals in an ant colony) with other colonies nearby by reacting to tenperature and rainfall cues. These ants are working hard for their lady Queen. Curious how I can get my family to do the same 😜⁣ ⁣ These leafcutter ants were a sight to see when we were in Tayrona National Park. I couldn't believe how many of them there were and how hard they worked. It was so fascinating to see. Fun fact: these ants don't eat the leaves they collect, but use them to grow fungus (which they then eat)⁣ ⁣ I think we should all be a little bit more like ants. They work hard, communicate well, and boy can those babies lift! Odorous House Ant (Tapinoma sessile) in my backyard, May 2018. The name "odorous" comes from this ant's characteristic smell which is described as "rotten coconuts or over-ripe bananas it exudes when squeezed". I have never squeezed this species so can't confirm the smell. We all mass-murdered some ants back in the day, right? Squishing each that came under our fingers.. Beheaded a few with some rocks.. and imagined a different reality where we could be that cold and heartless to our own species. Murdering humans with no emotions. Or perhaps a reality where we ourselves were an ant and experienced such trauma of seeing our brothers and sisters slain. We wondered further still if ants even have feelings.. but we thought “why, they must. If not then why do they hesitate to see another squashed before carrying on their way?
