Where You Belong (Runaway Hope AU) Pt.2

To Bonnie’s surprise, she chickened out. Bonnie knew that she was not a coward, but she couldn’t bring herself to dial the old number she had for Klaus. She did NOT want to hear the laughter in his hypnotically smooth voice. It was seductive, and she did NOT need to be distracted as he inevitably taunted her for accidentally kidnapping his child.

Maybe it was her social anxiety kicking in. It was easier to pretend to be more extroverted in her life before vampires. She was a former cheerleader, so being in crowds didn’t scare her. However, constantly being in danger did kill her social skills. Who even talks on the phone anymore? A text will do.

That man was ridiculous and had Bonnie aching to pull her hair out. Oh, how he knew the best ways to push all her buttons. She didn’t even send him her address but knew Klaus would find her. Her fingers fidgeted with nerves. It had been some time since she last faced an Original. Since then, she’s kicked the devil’s ass and stomped out hellfire. It wasn’t his physical strength that scared her. Bonnie was more concerned about the impact seeing Klaus would have on Hope.

Bonnie truly adored the youngest Mikaelson in the family, and she hoped that Klaus knew she would never harm a child. She was fully aware of his paranoia regarding threats to his family. The girl hadn’t seen her family in some time. Was Klaus showing up just to abandon her for the best? Bonnie didn’t think so.

She knew Hope would be excited to see her father. The disappointment from the child and parent parting again would crush Hope’s soul. All she could do was spend the rest of the day distracting Hope. When Bonnie first told Hope she would contact her father, the girl looked slightly distressed as she anticipated a lecture from her dad. Aware of their shared love for art, Bonnie planned to drag Hope to a museum before dinner, and then they could practice a little ballet before bed.

Hours in the early morning, Bonnie heard repeated knocks on her door. It was dawn, and some stranger seemed determined to get her attention. The Bennett witch hopped out of bed in her lilac satin nightgown with lace trim and reached for the matching robe. She rushed to the door with determination to end the knocking before Hope awakened. Bonnie pulled open the door to discover that it was NOT a stranger.

“What the hell, Klaus?” Bonnie asked with a dramatic eye roll. She was holding back the urge to slam the door in his face.

Klaus eyed her in the short nightgown before answering. “Hello, my little witch. My, have you grown, and yet it almost looks like you’ve barely aged.”

Bonnie wrapped the robe she was carrying around herself. She hated that she didn’t hate his stare and the way his eyes admired her body. “Dying over and over again is the best anti-aging solution out there. That and magic.”

“On to important things, where is my daughter?” Klaus shifted from playful to stern as he looked behind Bonnie. There was a coldness in his glare as he barged into Bonnie’s living room with the intent of finding his daughter.

“She is upstairs in my guest bedroom. Hope has my ancestor’s talisman around her neck that should protect her from the Hollow long enough for you to bring her back to school.”

The hybrid sighed in disbelief at the ludicrous nature of this situation. His child had run from the Salvatore Boarding School, and the only teacher to contact him about Hope being gone was across the ocean. “That school clearly isn’t capable of watching her. You know, Hope has written to me about you and your impact on her life.” There had to be another boarding school more qualified to care for Hope.

“Oh yeah? Did you write back?” With an arched brow, Bonnie couldn’t help but voice how unimpressed she was by Klaus’ lack of communication with Hope.

Didn’t the Bennett witch know all about doing things for the betterment of others? Not speaking with Hope hurt him as much as it pained his daughter. “Limited contact was for the best.”

“Hope needs her parents. She needs her family and not to be sent to a boarding school where she feels like an outcast.”

“Thank you for caring for my daughter, Ms. Bennett, but you are not her parent.”

“Maybe I should be,” Bonnie challenged with her hands on her hips. Both Klaus and Bonnie turned at the sound of little feet scampering towards them.

“Daddy!” the redhead child appeared at the top of the stairs. She rushed down each step and launched herself into her father’s arms. Finally, everything felt right to Hope. She had her two favorite people in the world with her. It felt like home. A part of Hope longed for the three of them to be a family.

I think Jeremy as the father of Bonnie’s children is the best option for canon in Legacies they made him guest star with barely any mentions of Bonnie.

Jeremy was the worst boyfriend Bonnie had. She was practically his parent with how often she had to look after his wellbeing. Bonnie shouldn't have to mother the father of her children. Jeremy didn't even do anything to make up for the emotional abuse of cheating-season5. That's why Bonnie still carries the weight of his infidelity around even when they get back together. Tbh, a big reason why I’m anti-Beremy outside of cheating is that it is mainly about Elena not necessarily Bonnie and Jeremy. A lot their moments are Elena-centered discussions. Bonnie deserves far better and so does the Bennett line.

JP mentioning how Bonnie’s permanent death was supposed to be for s5 on Twitter. How she said Kat “begged” for her job mixed with the discrediting and ignoring the Bennett’s in TO/LGCs. Bonnie was never going to get anything after 2017. She couldn’t wait to be free of Bonnie. She hoped Kat would give up and quit the way Trevino did.

LGCS writers bluntly said Bonnie wasn’t an important character for their musical but we all know what that double entendre meant. Bonnie’s not important at all once Elena/Caroline got their happy endings and families. We don’t even have the luxury of seeing Bonnie at peace in the finale scene or reconnecting with her family after all those years. The only time we see multiple Bennett’s at once is when they’re saving the day.

Bonnie barely gets mentioned at all. Bonnie not ending up with Jeremy is truly a miracle considering how much JP hated Bonnie stans and Bonnie herself. There’s ZERO respect to Bonnie given how much Bennett blood the Salvatore Boarding School has and the ascendant in order to send children into prison worlds. Plecverse didn’t even respect the POC characters they had on LGCs. Bonnie wouldn’t have been the exception.

She used to have a cute whiteboard on her door before she became more anti-social and had to preserve her dignity as a Mikaelson.

BTW Freya also puts her shoes on the bed.

And I realized: Hope Mikaelson was raised by an Appalachian Woman* and a 1,000-year-old Ancient viking!

(Seriously, Hayley Marshall is canonically Appalachian!).

Of course, Hope would do the same thing. Hell, Hayley didn't find anything wrong with it when Hope was 8 years old!

Now that Lizzie's broken the sire bond and Hope is back to her old self... I bet Lizzie's waiting to unleash a 10-minute rant about dirty shoes on the bed.

Also:

Has anyone else noted that this motel room has only one big bed?

(If Hope and Lizzie become a couple, their bickering will be about Hope wearing shoes on the bed covers, mark my words).

Also, Hope's mom, Hayley, and aunt Freya frequently drop by Salvatore school as hinted in The Originals -- so Hope's family dropping off the face of the Earth for 3 years might even be more isolating for Hope.

There are so many antis out there. So many petty people who feel the need to drag others for anything they don't agree with. There are Bluffy shippers that get attacked on Twitter, on here and just about anywhere else they decide to reveal themselves. They get shit on and called names for literally NOTHING. Hypocritical assholes who just can't stand when someone is happy with something they don't like. People who act like you're the antichrist for something as stupid as an age gap or something that isn't technically "canon"

I have been a target myself for some of my Bluffy art and it always upsets me. I get my shit screenshot and then I get blasted for something fictional 😕

But you? It doesn't faze you. You couldn't give a fuck less what people have to say, and I envy that so much. You dust off your shoulders and keep creating some of the best Bluffy content I've ever seen. Seriously, I love when you post and you post with zero regrets. I wish I was like you. I wish the antis didn't bother me.

I'm always showing my friends your work and several of us are currently reading your fic. Please don't ever stop creating. You may not know it, but you make me feel seen. That sounds really sappy, but it's true. A lot of people love what you do and we love your don't give a fuck attitude. It's refreshing for the people who are too shy or too afraid to post their work.

It always pisses me off when I find out someone is bullied into silence or anonymity. There is no reason to hate on something that hurts absolutely no one. No one should be afraid to post their art or share their favorite pair.

You shouldn't be afraid. There are fuckers on this site shipping people with animals for fuck's sake. People who draw monster porn, furry porn and fuck knows what else. And you're feeling scared to post a ship that has an age gap? Fuck, that just doesn't sit right with me. They're literally both adults. Didn't Damon and Stefan Salvatore flirt with a literal high school girl? The age gaps in Supernatural are wild as fuck. (And just to be clear, I'm not hating on those fandoms. I love me some vampires and demons🥴)

Not to mention the people the same fucking age as Luffy shipping themselves with Buggy? Everyone seems okay with that. It's hypocrisy at it's finest, kid.

Fandoms can be extremely toxic and I'm so sorry you got treated so horribly. My blog will always be a safe space and I will never stop posting or answering my asks. I do hope at some point, you feel confident enough to post again. Antis will never go away and they'll never stop being complete assholes. There's no reason for them to screenshot your shit and blast it. A block button is a beautiful thing. They have options, and every time, they choose to act holier than thou. There are times it does bother me. It really just pisses me off more than anything else, but it's not gonna stop me. I'm not hurting a single damn person and neither are you.

I'm flattered that you love my work so much and that you share it with whoever you can. Fuck what they say. Keep making whatever art you like and shove it down their throats. Eventually, they'll see that their behavior has no effect on you and they'll back off. And if they don't? Fuck it. Keep drawing anyway.

Idc who you are. I'm someone you can come to if you need to talk. I'll listen and let you get it all out. Life is hard enough and I'll never understand the people out there who want to make it worse. That's not me.

From a conversation last week with TheDarkestHour13, wherein I muse about the Travelers’ creepy blood fountain and its misuse in Legacies:

So we know from TVD that the Travelers’ creepy blood fountain was what created the anti-magic dome around Mystic Falls (powered by all the magic from the cemetery, IIRC, because I believe Kai went there to siphon all the magic and pull the dome down). And we know that the right-wing militia (sorry, Citizens Protection Squad, or something) used the anti-magic dome to kill vampires by chaining them in their creepy van and driving into town. And that it reverted Tyler from a hybrid to a completely untriggered werewolf when he passed through (thanks to someone saving him from, IIRC, drowning, or however he died to become a vampire). We also know that it turned Alaric from an Original back into a measly human, once Jo saved him from bleeding out. See where I’m going with this?

So when Veronica and Burke(?) and the rest of the Triad thugs invaded the School in S1, she knew from being on the Parents Council or something that Alaric had the Travelers’ creepy blood fountain stashed in the basement, and she turned it on before they invaded. How did it not kill all the vampires and un-transition all the werewolves (including Hope) at the School? You know, eliminate ⅓ of the student body? Conversely, how was Kai able to siphon the magic powering the dome inside the dome back in TVD? All it seemed to do in Legacies was neutralize any supernatural powers (vamp speed, werewolf strength and healing, witches’ magic, etc). Does the creepy fountain have different settings, like a phaser? And Veronica set it to stun? (Still, even if it had settings, how irresponsible was it of Alaric to keep it around if it was capable on one of those settings of killing ⅓ of the student body upon activation!?)

And…if it could turn Alaric from an Original back into a human, does that mean that if the original Originals had come to Mystic Falls during the Travelers’ dominion, would they have all reverted to humans-at-the-point-of-death-however-Esther-killed-them, white oak be damned? (Or was there something different about how Esther turned Alaric?) And so, if Alaric had this thing in the basement, couldn’t they have used it on Hope once she turned her humanity off? And since Freya killed her with magic, stripping away the magic of vampirism would have left her dead by magic, which would also have been stripped away, leaving us with a live, full-humanity, if very unhappy, teen witch? (Granted, Alaric was in a coma at that point, but, again, Veronica clearly knew how to use it, at least partly, so their plan to distract Hope with Salvatore Idol could have been, not (just) to give Josie time to get ready, but to give Veronica time to get there and turn the thing on….)

This macguffin is like swiss cheese, and I am driving buses through those holes!

Rumor has it that they are an 22 year old WITCH who is one of the SACRIFICED but we’ll keep that a secret. They are said to be MANIPULATIVE, but that’s all a façade to cover up their BIG HEART nature. We’ve heard that they can be found listening to ANTI-HERO by TAYLOR SWIFT, which sums them up pretty well. Let’s hope that they can find a way to survive this harsh new world.

Penelope was raised by her mother and her coven. she never knew her father and she suspects that her mother likes it that way. she is from a coven that is all or nothing. they practice specialized and sometimes dark magic. her coven is very loyal to itself and sometimes other witches, but not to anyone else.

Penelope doesn’t really feel like she fits in with her family and knows that if she doesn’t do what is wished of her, that her coven would disown her. And she knew her mother would leave her at the same time. Because of this, she is shielded in all her relationships, like her relationship with Josie, normally holding more cards/knowledge than she should for a child her age. and knowing what to tell people and what to keep to herself to protect herself. She secretly wishes her father would find her and save her from having to be this guarded in her life, but she knows that will never happen.

She was sent to the Salvatore School by her coven, so that she could report back about the school, given it was the first of it's kind as a mix of the species. She fought to stay to keep an eye on Josie but in the end, couldn't watch what was going to happen, so let her coven pull her out.

Penelope left the Salvatore School and Mystic falls to finish her schooling at an elite witch only school in Belgium with her sister. Penelope did as she was told, and watched as the OEA started to make a name for themselves. Her mother and coven made their bed with the OEA. They started working for the OEA and Penelope hated it. She watched as the OEA spread and then three years ago when she stood up to her mother, refusing to kill. Her mother send her to the prison world the witches had created. Leaving Penelope there for 3 years, till she finally got out.

She is currently on the streets, trying to work out what to do with her life and how to hide from her coven and mother.

(sky high & sky u have been folded into the marvel continuity on this blog and i will write a post on that later.) khione has graduated from sky high and is now enrolled in sky u. but of course the life of a hero in training is never easy. it wasn't in high school and it won't be in college slash university, either.

THE BOYS / GEN V: khione has been injected with compound v much like her parents before her. she's got access to cryokinesis and hydrokinesis, though. she's currently enrolled in god u and, due to her parents, chose the crimson countess track despite the fact that she's got what it takes and actually wanted to try her hand at getting into the lamplighter track. while people called her freeze girl in high school, these days, her chosen hero name is frostbite.

INVINCIBLE: third gen with hydro/cryo abilities. goes to the same school as mark and samantha. declined an invitation to join the teen team and joined up with the stronghold six, which then turned into the stronghold seven.

MARVEL: main universe. mutant with hydro/cryo abilities. think iceman. (she wants to meet iceman so bad.) her parents wanted to send her to xavier's but ended up relenting when khione made it clear that she wanted to go to sky high and sky u (but that win came with a price).

the gifted: a mutant with hydro/cryo abilities. she's with the mutant underground and has made a sizable donation (it's not like her parents will miss the money.)

DC: metahuman with hydro/cryo abilities. think caitlin snow. except khione's had hers since birth. she has an undisputed love for ice heroes and ice villains.

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY: has hydro/cryo abilities. her parents - who have similar powers - run in the same affluent circles as allison.

DESCENDANTS: a well known auradon born. daughter of two retired heroes (permafrost and ganga) who have been planning out her entire life. her parents are

TEEN WOLF: third gen ice (and water) elemental who has lived in beacon hills since forever. it doesn't take her that long to figure out that werewolves are a thing. she's not part of any pack but wouldn't balk at helping out if need be. has a soft spot for scott mccall and the mccall pack as a whole.

TWILIGHT: vampire who has a combination of hydrokinesis and cryokinesis as her special ability. comes from a long line of vampires with similar abilities.

FIRST KILL: legacy who comes from a long line of vampires with extra abilities: her dad is a cryokinetic and her mom is a hydrokinetic. khione has inherited both powers, which is great. she's also inherited their enemies, which is not so great.

TVD: third gen ice (and water) elemental who is around jeremy's age and has been posing as an ice witch so far. not really part of the mystic falls gang but wouldn't say no to helping them either.

THE ORIGINALS: third gen ice (and water) elemental who is wandering around new orleans in search of her friends.

LEGACIES: third gen ice (and water) elemental, starts out at mystic falls high but ends up transferring to salvatore's when her powers get exposed. thinks malivore is a dumb name. not part of the super squad or the anti squad but helps both out if need be. she mostly hangs out with the stronghold six (and when she joins the group as their seventh and final member, the name changes from the stronghold six to the stronghold seven).

COBRA KAI: khione is trying her best to stay out of the karate war, lest anyone finds out that she actually has powers. but her parents want her to get lessons from daniel, specifically, because he's so well known. khione would really rather not, though.

ONCE UPON A TIME: khione arrives in storybrooke much like elsa did in season four, turning storybrooke into a winter wonderland. the young elemental is only here for one thing and one thing only: finding her friends.

I was absolutely obsessed with the OC in high school, just utterly hooked. Watched it daily. But I haven’t seen it in about ten years until I randomly turned on the last season tonight….and I am just as in love with Seth Cohen now as I was back then. My sweet dorky boy 🥰

Also I’ve been realizing as of late that I think I actually might be bisexual/pansexual, or at least biromantic/panromantic, and I DEFINITELY have a type when it comes to men. It’s always one of three types of guys: the sweet funny dorky guys like Seth Cohen or Stiles, the morally grey/anti hero asshole type like Damon Salvatore, Barry Berkman, or Logan Echolls, or the dark evil fuckers that secretly have a heart of gold but only show it to a very select few people like Klaus Mikaelson

Landon now felt strange admitting it, felt odd to talk to one of the people that he had written a play about. “Everything you did in Mystic Falls, the whole history of it. The doppelgangers, fighting Originals, the travelers, anti-magic barrier, heretics. I wrote a play about it all for the Salvatore school.”

It felt weird to have someone listen a lot of the things from his last few decades of life. “Oh, the school play,” Damon said. “Right, yeah. I saw that. It was pretty good. Though It was a little more romantic in the play, than I recall it being in real life. I wasn’t really the hero of the story to start with.”

bonnie pushed back the hellfire from mystic falls back into the maxwell bell, back to hell itself, mystic falls was saved from it’s once prophecied complete annilation that once doomed our matt donovan from his demonic roots. he did not become the anti-christ like he was born for. having closed the hellmouth gate entirely, matt’s powers were ultimately severed from it’s source, thus making him weaker and lost most of his cambion abilities bare a weak few. his powers stemming from a mixture of his unique blood as well as a connection toa hellmouth itself. with cade dead, it is also revealed that he is not, the actual devil but instead, had been given that role as the king of hell whilst lucifer was freed to roam whenever he wanted. it is unclear if matt could regain his powers and resume his fate to become the anti-christ or next king of hell, but he has choses against it. rejecting predetermined ideas about his future. his mothers soul, returned to be damned by hell and his sister vicki, finally is allowed to find peace in the afterlife, having only been held in hell as something to hold against and manipulate matt. it is unclear now where lucifer is and if he is coming to meet matt himself.

after the gate closes, matt came to the realisation that mystic falls itself, was his own personal hell and he was actally, much happier away from his hometown despite feeling loyalty to a town that had only made him sad his entire life. with the death of tyler, matt cannot stand to be in mystic falls without his best friend and thus post series, he moves to persue a career in becoming a PI DECTIVE, to use the remaining gifts and his extensive gathered knowledge of the supernatural world, to help those in need so that never again, people would hopefully not feel the way he did when his sister first died and he didn’t believe her about vampires.

and thus, matt grows colder and distant to his friends, especially after stefan’s funeral. that was the last real time all of his friens were together. having moved across the states, now persuing his PI career, over the years, matt slowly started to visit mystic falls less and less. only for important ocassion’s such as lizzie and josie’s birthdays. though now having a perminant home in sanfransico, matt is dotted around the country on case by case calls or to offer his assitence in cases he suspects has supernatural orgin/basis.

when matt does decide to vist town, it’s usually because he’s someplace near home, visiting his step-mother and younger half-brother. matt also, has adopted a young teenager named nolan, who was left orphaned after one of his first few cases went seriously wrong. though very busy, matt has found solace in having someone he can call his family again having lost so much. in a lot of ways, his son’s own life parallels parts of his own and his best friend tyler’s and thus, couldn’t leave him. matt will sometime let nolan stay for short times at the salvatore school to mingle with other kids so he knows the distincition between good and bad supernatural creates.

matt, if he has the time, will also teach classes on detective work for students who are interested with the permission of the current headmaster. he is still very close with dorian also as they game online sometimes

After reinventing herself as a cryptic Hollywood femme fatale, the 30-year-old singer has fought off the haters to become a proper, if unusual, pop star. In a rare interview, she opens up about coping with anxiety, her new-age mentors and how she almost played Sharon Tate on the big screen: “I could have become an American nightmare.”

LANA DEL REY AND I WERE FIRST introduced at an Architectural Digest pimped manse off Pacific Coast Highway during a party thrown, weirdly enough, for Werner Herzog and his bud, the physicist Lawrence Krauss. (Del Rey, 30, has spoken before of her interest in science and philosophy.) On that night, she wore an unformfitting Polo shirt dress with a personal-old-fave vibe. In deglamorized “Stars Without Makeup” mode, she was unpretentious and softly gregarious, like a doe-eyed, underdressed newcomer to the Town. I was at the same table, and she caught me staring off at the horizon. Del Rey was sardonically attuned, nudging her boyfriend, the Italian photographer-director Francesco Carrozzinni, to have a look at the cliché: Old Brooding Man. Her warmth took me out of myself.

Lana Del Rey’s fourth album, Honeymoon, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in September, but when I asked if she planned to go on the road to promote it, she shook her head. “I do everything backwards. It already happened — I’m actually done with the world tour I started four years ago, when I needed to be out there. I really needed to be out there singing.”

That exodus was partly born of the need to heal following a 2012 appearance on Saturday Night Live that elicited a slaughter-of-the-lamb storm of derision over the then up-and-coming star’s seemingly zoned-out amateurism. She was tarred as a poseur — part Edie Sedgwick, part Valley of the Dolls, a Never Will Be Ready for Primetime Player — but it turned out that Del Rey was only at the end of Act One in an all-American A Star Is Born passion play of celebrity crucifixion and resurrection.

Born Lizzy Grant in Lake Placid, N.Y., Del Rey moved to Manhattan at 18. “For seven years I wrote sexy songs about love,” she says. “That was the most joyous time of my life.” The screen that so many gossipy personas have been projected onto (rich preppy, suicidal anti-feminist, morbid dilettante) has instead transformed into a nearly religious dashboard icon of ghostly seduction. She’s a global phenomenon, part of the national conversation and cultural soundscape. Nielsen Music puts her total U.S. album sales at 2.5 million, and her videos have been viewed hundreds of millions of times. Del Rey is now a few years into her return from the desert, having arrived on a mystery train of Santa Ana winds, existential dread and “soft ice cream” (to quote her song “Salvatore”) that is uniquely her own.

I meet her for the interview at a John Lautner house she rents in Los Angeles. Lautner was a seminal Southern California architect, and Del Rey says her choice of lodging was deliberate. She production-designs her life. She greets me in the drive — inquisitive, friendly and aware. For a moment, she looks like Elvis and Priscilla, all in one. The hair is old-school Clairol dark, the eyes siren green, the auburn ’do the most done thing about her.

“You’d love my dad,” she says. She was just on the phone with him; her parents are visiting. He’s a realtor, and Mom’s an English teacher whose passion is reading history books. Del Rey lives here with her younger sister, Caroline Grant, a photographer who goes by Chuck. (Del Rey tells me that her sister was so shocked by the force of the fans’ emotions during concerts that she doesn’t take pictures of them anymore.)

“My dad’s that guy with perfect Hawaiian shirts and matching shorts,” says Del Rey. “The other day he said, ‘We should see about getting you a vintage Rolls.’ I said, ‘Um, it’s a little attention-grabbing.’ And he said, ‘Uh, yeah.’ ”

What do you do with yourself now that you have nothing on your schedule?

I go for long walks, long drives. I’ll get in the car and drive the streets, feeling for places. I go to Big Sur. I love Big Sur, but it has gotten so touristy. I went to the General Store, and there were hordes. On a Monday! But I’m drawn there. Sometimes I go to write. I’ve been thinking it might be time to do a longer video, a 40-minute video. I was watching The Sandpiper, and I was working on something kind of based on that.

Have you thought of writing something for yourself? Shooting down the paparazzi helicopter in the video for “High by the Beach” was your idea, no?

Yeah, it was. I’d like to write a book one day. But you need a beginning, a middle and an end! I can deal with four minutes — but I’m not so sure about a book.

Your song “God Knows I Tried” fits somewhere between The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” I’m thinking of Cohen because of that line “Even though it all went wrong.”

I love Leonard — because he’s all about women. Women and God.

Does it all go wrong?

It’s hard for me sometimes to think about going on when I know we’re going to die. Something happened in the last three years, with my panic…

I had read that you were prone to that.

It got worse. But I’ve always been prone to it. I remember being — I was, I think, 4 years old — and I’d just seen a show on TV where the person was killed. And I turned to my parents and said, ��Are we all going to die?” They said “Yes,” and I was totally distraught! I broke down in tears and said, “We have to move!”

How do you cope?

I saw a therapist — three times. But I’m really most comfortable sitting in that chair in the studio, writing or singing.

The panic won’t last forever.

I don’t think so, but … sometimes you just want to be able to enjoy the view. I think I’m really like my mother, in the sense that I make small lists. To calm myself down. I reward myself. You know, “If I finish this, then I’ll do that” — I’ll go for a walk on the beach or swim in the ocean. I go for swims and am actually shocked I do that. Because one thing I’m terrified of is sharks.

Do you think having a child would chill you out? Do you want to have kids?

I’ve thought about it. Really thought about it lately because I’ve just turned 30. I’d love having daughters. But I don’t think it’d be a good idea to have kids with someone who wasn’t … on the same page.

Someone who…

Who isn’t exactly — like me! (Laughs.) Though maybe it’s best to have kids with someone who’s … normal.

When was the last time you got trashed by a love affair?

The last one — before the boyfriend I’m with now — was pretty bad. It wasn’t good to be in it, but it wasn’t good to be out of it, either. He was like a twin. Not a facsimile twin, but a real twin.

So maybe finding the same person doesn’t work. Are relationships hard for you?

For someone like me — and it’s not a codependent thing — I just like having someone there. I’ve been alone, and that’s fine. But I like to come home and have someone there. You know, to say, “Oh, he’s here. And this other thing (Mimes a table.) is there. And this (Mimes setting down an object on the table.) is there. (Laughs.) I’m very methodical. I have to be. I’m like that in the studio too. Mixing and mastering can take four more months after we’re done — three to mix and one to master. I like having a plan. Though I do leave spaces for ad-libbing in the studio when I write.

Do you mind if I write all this? Because I don’t want to piss off Francesco.

Oh, he’s going to read this! But he’ll have things to say anyway. He’s very … aggressive. (Smiles.) And besides, I didn’t say he wasn’t just like me.

There’s something weirdly shamanistic about your work. You channel Los Angeles in ways I haven’t seen from anyone, at least not in a long while. Places now extinct, streets and feelings that you have no right to be able to evoke because of your age. And it’s so unlikely that you’re the one to be the oracle that way. But it’s for real.

I know. I know that. I love that word, “shamanistic.” I read energy; I always have. One of the books I love — aside from [Kenneth Anger’s] Hollywood Babylon — is The Autobiography of a Yogi. And Wayne Dyer … I was so upset when he died! [Dyer, part Buddhist, part New Thought motivational speaker, was best-known for his book Your Erroneous Zones. He died in August.] He gave me so much over the last 15 years. I went to see a clairvoyant. She asked me to write down four things on a card before I came in, things I might be thinking about, and she nailed all four. I asked about the man I was seeing — that one, before the one now. She said, “I don’t really like to go there, but … I just don’t see him present.” I went, “Ugh.” She’s seeing the future and doesn’t see him present. Oh, no!

Are you aware of your effect on men?

I’ve only recently become aware of the heterosexual males who are into my music. I remember when I was 16, I had a boyfriend. I think he was… 25? I thought that was the best thing. He had an F-150 pickup and let me drive it one time. I was so high up! I panicked and was worried I might kill someone — run over a nun or something. I started to shake. I was screaming and crying. I saw him looking over, and he was smiling. He said, “I love that you’re out of control.” He saw how vulnerable I was, how afraid, and he loved that. The balance shifted from there. I had the upper hand — until then.

Do you want to be in the movies?

Well… I’m open to it all. James Franco asked me to be in three films that were going to be directed by a Spanish director, and I was hesitant. I think he heard my hesitance and got scared. Someone wanted me to be Sharon Tate. I thought, “That’s so right.” At that time, there were three Manson movies being talked about, but none were ever made. So maybe that was the answer.

Have you ever been the “voice of reason” for a friend in crisis?

I have — I can be. It’s easier to do that sometimes … for someone who’s half-checked out.

Meaning you.

Yes. (Pauses.) You know, I was living in Hancock Park once and thought about a movie idea. I was renting this house whose high walls had been grandfathered in, so of course I kept making them taller and taller. And I had an idea about writing something about a woman living there, a singer losing her mind. She has this Nest-like security system installed, cameras everywhere. The only people she saw were people who work on the grounds: construction people and gardeners. One day she hears the gardener humming this song she wrote. She panics and thinks, “Oh, my God. Was I humming that out loud or just to myself? And if it was aloud, wasn’t it at 4 in the morning? Did that mean he was outside my window?” Then a storm comes, one of those L.A. storms, and the power goes out except to the cameras, which are on a different source. And the pool has been empty for months because of the drought. And she goes outside in the middle of the night because she hears something — and trips over the gardener’s hoe and falls into the empty pool and dies facedown like William Holden at the end of Sunset Boulevard.

For me, one of the most interesting things about you and your story — and of course your work — is that you broke through. That it has turned out well.

I think about it, and I’m so grateful. I am aware that it could easily not have happened. That I could have become … an American nightmare. I see her — Lana — I listen to her and watch her, and I’m … protective.

Let’s end with Big Sur. Do you think your interest is by way of your kinship with the Beats? Your enthrallment with Kerouac?

Big Sur challenges me to surrender. What draws me is … the curves. I’m really drawn to the curves.
