Okay, but this quote:
"When love becomes sufficient in and of itself, the lover does not have to exhaust himself chasing or sit inanimate in a corner. If the lover loves well, there is no need for imprisonment. The beloved is bound by love and will want to stay nearby of his own accord. The Little Prince's friendship friendship with the fox is quite different to his love for the rose. It renders love as a particular level of domestication. As a wild animal without a collar or chain, the fox could leave him at any point. He is not a pet, but stays with The Little Prince because he wants to. This is Khalil Gibran's notion that the beloved can only prove to the lover that he or she also loves if possessiveness is relinquished. Love returns like a boomerang." ~ Roland Barthes (via this post)
This quote just strongly reminded me of the difference between John's love for Jamie and Percy's love for John.
John's love for Jamie is very much a self-created prison, one that he's built for himself brick by brick chasing any connection to Jamie he could manage to secure (using his influence to get Jamie's parole served out at Helwater to keep him where John could see him, marrying Isobel just so he could serve as surrogate father to Jamie's son, moving to America just so he could be nearer to Jamie, and all while simultaneously putting his heart away on a shelf so as not to "betray" his feelings for Jamie).
In the process of his pursuit of Jamie he's deserted the very cornerstone of his life - his desire to live a life of purpose in quest of honour and justice - to "sit inanimate in a corner" awaiting every opportunity to swoop in and save the day like his primary reason for existence is now being guardian angel to the Frasier family.
Regardless of my personal opposition to the very practice imperialism and slavery, I at least respected John's strength of character in his devotion to his duty because HE believed in the integrity of his office, and that his actions were for the ultimate security, and therefore betterment, of society. But NOW? What's he even doing with his life anymore? The man hasn't had a real job since 1768! o.O (Good thing he's rich. Must be nice to retire at 39 years old. xd)
I don't know about you, but that is not the Lord John Grey I knew and loved. The John who once went, "For an instant, he fantasized the possibility of securing Percy's freedom, whether by lies or bribery, then going abroad, the two of them together. He had money enough. To live a pointless existence of idleness with a man whom he could not trust. No, it would not serve." (BotB, Ch 28) I guess a near pointless existence of idleness in service to a man who doesn't love you and barely pays attention to you unless he needs something from you is somehow a life worth living to him? Okay then. smh
But it's the contrasting nature of Percy's quietly abiding love for John versus John's desperate fervour for Jamie that I find most intriguing. While John's chased after Jamie at nearly every possible opportunity over the years (even when he knew his attention was vehemently unwanted), Percy...hasn't.
Only on THREE occasions did Percy actually purposefully set out to see John. The first time they met again after 18 years when John returned to his hotel room to find Percy waiting for him -- though that occasion was primarily motivated by Percy's work (though I'm sure he was quick to volunteer his services when it gave him a reason to see John again xd). And the time(s) Percy turned up at John's tent looking for him after he'd recognized John disguised as an enemy soldier, no doubt because he feared John being hanged for a spy.
And Percy was quick to try and leverage his own realm of influence to safeguard John's life when he asked to take John to meet the Marquis de Lafayette. He knew the young nobleman would heed his counsel as his adviser if he convinced him John was too valuable to be executed and that he should advocate on John's behalf to General Washington (since he held Lafayette in great affection and regarded him like a son). Through Lafayette's influence Percy could've ensured John was permitted to serve out his parole in safety and comfort (if only Jamie had consented to let him go!), maybe even in the French camp where Percy was. (And, hello, there's fanfic idea for anyone looking for one! ^.^ lol)
And the third and final time Percy sought John out was on Richardson's boat (somewhere he was quite likely forcibly brought in the first place or else deceived into coming), when he came to apologize to him and admit he still loved him because he thought he might never see him again. 😢
But the thing that stands out to me is just how much Percy, in fact, never actively chased John at all during all those years. All the other times they only encountered each other incidentally. And sure, Percy flirted a bit here and there, but mostly he maintained his sense of purpose and did his job. The only time he really went out of his way to seek out John outside of his work was when he feared for John's life.
Percy felt no need to chase John on a personal level because his love for him had long become sufficient in and of itself. He felt no desperation to pursue John the way John did Jamie (despite both of them being aware that their romantic affections were unwelcome), no need to cling to any mementos of John (like John's done with Jamie's sapphire all these years) to remind himself of his feelings for him, and he didn't feel the same depth of insecurity to use the other to fill the void within himself as John did with Jamie.
Yet it can't be denied that Percy loved John greatly all that time in his own far less overtly displayed way. Even while doing his job his desire to safeguard John was ever-present. Even in the months when he never saw or spoke to John he was still keeping abreast of where he was and what he was doing, and most importantly, investigated Ezekiel Richardson and figured out the threat he posed to the Grey family and warned John about him years before Richardson even closed in for the kill. If only John had given Percy's warning the credence it deserved! T_T
(I also can't help but be amused by all the times Percy's straight out known more about everything's that going on than John. And Percy took a mere six months to figure out "Buttercup's" secret identity, but apparently John never figured out that "Beauchamp" and "Monsieur Citron" were in fact the same agent until 1780. John may've been the more experienced soldier, but it looks like Percy has always been the better spy! LOL And you know what? Good for him! <3)
I also can't help but feel that Percy's is ultimately the more selfless love, too. I mean, sure John cares about Jamie's welfare but it's a very self-serving sort of selflessness he demonstrates regarding Jamie a lot of the time. How many times has he talked about doing something for Jamie's greater welfare but in the same breath also expressed that it's because it's something HE (John) needs for sake of himself? Not to mention that by so doing he also at least gained Jamie's gratitude and a modicum of his attention.
Whereas Percy continually acts out of care for John even though John barely offers him basic civility in their interactions, let alone anything else. At least Jamie still offers John friendship (somewhat warped though it is). Percy is motivated by love of John alone, knowing perfectly well he has nothing whatsoever to offer Percy in return -- not even the basic dignity one human being ought to afford another, if John's apathetic treatment of him near the end of Bees is any indication. ~ 😔
(Honestly, just...*hurls John into the sea again for being a f*cking class A idiot* Jamie doesn't deserve John's love, and John barely, if at all anymore, still deserves Percy's.😑)

Most people agree that John should move on with his life, let go of Jamie and find happiness in a real relationship. But there are some takes on this subject that really piss me off.
I’m sorry but “oh I know John will never love someone like/more than he loves Jamie, but I really wish he could find a great guy and have a nice relationship with him!!” is not the good argument that you think it is.
That’s not getting over Jamie, that’s settling for second best. Well, he can’t have Jamie, poor thing! So he will have to take someone else who he won’t love as much as he loves Jamie but at least he will have someone to cuddle with at night 🥺
Why can’t John actually get over Jamie?? Why should he settle for the second best? Worse, why should his partner accept being the second choice??
I damn well don’t want John loving someone else like he loves Jamie because that shit is completely unhealthy imo, but I know that’s not what people mean.
Jamie being the superior god-like man that everyone is in love with/is attracted to/wants to fuck is kinda ridiculous imho, but I understand the appeal that a character like that has for the audience of a romance book/show. But to put Jamie so high up in a pedestal and to think that John should be forever in love with him and not ever get over him because oh lord nothing is comparable to King-of-Men-Jamie is… a choice.
Listen. I know that’s on Diana. She is the one who wrote John like this. But I wish people would be more critical of Diana’s writing of him instead of swallowing that shit up like it’s chocolate. Everyone knows how problematic the books can be regarding certain topics, this is just another one of these things.
Instead of accepting that John won’t ever get over Jamie/won’t ever love someone as much as he loves Jamie, you should be asking yourself: why is that Diana writes him like this? Why does she insist in the stereotypical cliché of the gay man having unrequited feelings for his straight best friend? Why can’t John truly move on and stop having romantic feelings for Jamie? Why should Jamie be John’s greatest love?
Outlander is essentially a romance (idgaf about what DG says). Love of all types is a running theme: not only romantic love, but the love that exists within family and friendship. And yes, there’s a lot of platonic/friendship kind of love between J/J.
But romantic love specifically has a huge role in this story. We have straight couples left and right in this series: Claire and Jamie, Bree and Roger, Fergus and Marsali, Ian and Rachel, Dottie and Denzell, Hal and Minnie, Jenny and Ian, hell, even Brian and Ellen are getting a spin-off.
So I’m sorry but it’s really freaking weird that, in the middle of all this, people say that John (the character with his own book series and one of the main POV characters in the main series, mind you) won’t ever be able to love someone like he loves Jamie, or more than he loves Jamie. It’s really freaking weird that people say that John has to settle with second best — because that’s essentially what’s being said every time someone says that John won’t ever love someone like he loves Jamie but he should find someone else to be in a relationship with anyway.
All of that for what? Keep the cliché of the gay dude in love with his straight best friend and who never moves on? C’mon now. Don’t piss me off.

So….I am in the very beginning of the 3rd season of Yellowstone (First two episodes) and there are already a few scenes which makes my head hurt for Jamie.
Starting with Scene 1
There is the scene in the very first episode where the cowboys, John, Casey and Tate are about to move to the summer camp. It’s shown as if they are literally on the brick of heading off when Jamie comes along on his horse to join them. At this point Jamie is still part of the cowboys and is living in the barn with them. Therefore, he has every right in the world to assume that he, Jamie, will join them and help out in the summer camp. That is his JOB at this point.
The overarching plot of this episode is that John Dutton is unable to be Livestock Commissioner/ Commander/ Whatever because of the events in the finale of season 2. He gets to nominate his successor for which he choses Casey first. Casey doesn’t feel like it; so he declines with a „lol, no, big pass, good luck with it I guess, I am out“ kind of vibe. Interestingly, Casey suggests Jamie instead („[…] you have a politician; and he’s living currently in the barn[…]“ is very close to what he is saying, I believe). John does not do that. He offers it to Beth instead who also declines and walks out.
This political position is clearly a key factor to Johns way of saving the ranch, Yellowstone, but John seems to be unsure of what to do or he just forgets about it. That’s until Jamie arrives.
So…Jamie, CLEARLY completely unaware of what is going on, assuming that he is still with the cowboys instead of being offered another job as LITERALLY LAST CHOICE, comes out with his horse all excited, wearing his hat and visibly smiling. THIS IS THE EXACT MOMENT when John APPARENTLY decides to tell him that he will be the new Livestock Commissioner.
John makes sure to tell Jamie that he will not stand another disappointment from him and then leaves with Jamie’s co-workers up to this point, his brother and nephew. This excluding Jamie in every way from everything which gave him self-confidence up to this point and literally leaves him behind to take his horse back in, I guess.
I mean WHAT????
The nonchalantness of it all, I think, makes me really angry. If John REALLY doesn’t trust Jamie with this position HE COULD HAVE FOUND ANOTHER WAY. He could have made Beth do it or even Monica or LITERALLY ANYONE ELSE.
The best choice of course, in my opinion, would be Rip, but John apparently still doesn’t considers him family; which is also just nonsense at this point.
I just don’t get that he waited until Jamie had his horse ready and settled and then told him in the most humiliating way possible in front of all these people. I simply don’t understand that. I mean John didn’t what Jamie to die so I guess he has some feelings of being a FARTHER to him but what was this then?
Jamies reason for being in the barn was for him to regain self-confidence in a field where he doesn’t experience so much stress. John just put a lot of stress on him. Again.

Unpopular opinion but Jamie x Claire is not a romance story. It's gross af and vomit worthy how Jamie can remarry after Claire travels back to her time for twenty years and the fact that he hid, lied, decieved, manipulated and gaslit Claire into staying. If gripping someone's wrist and forcing them to stay when they want to leave is romance, I want nothing to do it. It is disgusting. Jamie Frasier is a liar and a cheater and I'd dump his ass if I found out he replaced me with someone else while I was away. And the slutshaming he does? Jesus fucking christ. Oh and he's a raging homophobe as well, so I'm still mystified why the hell John considers him a friend after Jamie called him a pervert to his face. I'm amazed how little self respect people have if they think Jamie Fraser is the epitome of a good man in any shape, way or form. For all I care, he's a traitor to his family, clan, his godfather murtagh and his wife Claire and his apologies are fake as hell and don't bring about changed behavior since he keeps hiding secrets when Claire especially requested no secrets. Both John Grey and Claire Fraser deserve way better than a sorry excuse of a man named Jamie Fraser

Yellowstone season 5's trailer looks oddly promising... the 100 season 7's trailer seemed good too but look what we got instead
I know that hoping to see John be decent and not pass for a hero when he's just an egotistical and abusive piece of s**t is pure wishful thinking, but at least I hope to see more of the bunkhouse crew, more spinning horses and please, pretty please, give me Beth and Jamie working together at the same level.
They're two fucking powerhouses in their own way, they have so much potential and I am TIRED to see Beth written as a ludicrous cartoonish omnipotent boring evil bitch. I know there's more to her than this.
I mean I already know Sheridan & co. will find more than a way to disappoint me but I'm gonna watch and see I guess

Music I think Roy Kent likes and why
Madonna. In season 3, episode 3, Roy said, "[Pre-Madonna] means before Madonna, female vocalists didn't have to work that hard." This implies a great respect for Madonna and her craft. Also, it's an example of a very specific kind of queer guy misogyny that I find very humorous and implicative (of him being queer).
The Sex Pistols (and other punk rock). Two of their songs are in the Ted Lasso soundtrack. One of them specifically plays when Roy is about to do some pundit work for the first time. I think it's meant to be his hype up music. They're also, of course, anti-fascist and anti-monarchy, which I think Roy would vibe with. He's giving punk.
The music of the Muppets. Canonically (not that I necessarily consider this kind of thing canon, lol) a Muppets fan, I think he'd love the soundtracks to the movies, as well as the numbers they do on the original show.
Rap; Salt-n-Pepa, Queen Latifah, and Beyoncé. I just think he would like them. In season 1, episode 6, Keeley mentions that he has rapped, implying at least some interest in the genre.
Leonard Cohen. I think Roy's Jewish, and he's a broody, sensual bitch. It adds up perfectly. Sidenote: while "She's a Rainbow" by the Rolling Stones was a great choice for the song he runs home to football to, I think Cohen's "Ain't No Cure for Love" would've fucking slayyyed..."I loved you for a long, long time / I know this love is real / It don't matter how it all went wrong / That don't change the way I feel / And I can't believe that time is gonna heal / This wound that I'm speaking of" "I've got you like a habit / And I'll never get enough" "I don't need to be forgiven / For loving you so much"
Klezmer. Again, if Roy is Jewish, and we know he loves and misses his grandad...it's simple. He HAS a record player and a dope sound system, and on his shelves there ARE old klezmer records that he remembers dancing around to with his grandad in their old flat.
Amy Winehouse. Again, if Roy is Jewish, and we know he is broody and bitchy, it is a given. "Rehab" is his anthem when his knee gets bad and he is reluctant to treat it.
Disco; Donna Summer and Jessie Ware. It's just great workout music, and it slays, and if he's queer, well, yes, of course he likes disco.
Pop rock; Elton John and Queen. If he's queer...it's a given. I think he particularly likes "I Think I'm Going to Kill Myself" and "Rocket Man", as he is suicidal (I can't find the interview where Goldstein said this) (it's just Word of God anyway), and the most rocket man motherfucker ever.
The music of the people he loves; Led Zeppelin, Cream, Tina Turner, and Stevie Nicks. Phoebe, Keeley, and Jamie like these musicians. He's a caring uncle, boyfriend, and friend. He is listening and learning. Also, I think Phoebe would be into some weird stuff, like outsider music - maybe some Tiny Tim. I think Roy would also enjoy the music of other friends, from plenty of other genres.

I feel like I'm the only queer in Outlanderdom who read that scene between John and Jamie in BotB (you KNOW the one, it's surely infamous by now 💀) and just went NOPE, and pressed the eject button on Jamie Fraser. Because he is not allowed back in the tent of my fond regard until he amends his grossly homophobic ways.
And he still hasn't.
Treating Lord John as the sole exception to his repulsive (however period typical) attitude to "sodomites", the one rare honourable man among an otherwise perverse and fundamentally untrustworthy people, is NOT amendment.
He has not really changed at all, not in all the decades since.
And we know he's quite capable of seeing things from a radically different perspective beyond the limits of contemporary morality - just ask Claire and Breanna. He hasn't changed because he doesn't want to. Period.
And therefore he stays outside the tent. No homophobes allowed. 😐

Unpopular opinion but I don't ship Jamie x John. It's unhealthy and obsessive and John needs to give it up. Jamie has repeatedly said in words/actions/body language that says "No I don't like you in a romantic/sexual sense, and I never will". He needs to get some self respect and stop chasing after that asshole becuase John is just making an ass out of himself trying to force his feelings on Jamie. This feels like a unstoppable object meets a immovable object moment. And personally, if someone told me they didn't like me or even hinted it, I'd never feel the same towards them again. Persistence isn't always key. Sometimes you just gotta let people go. And John needs to learn this becuase it's not healthy, his attachment to Jamie is not healthy at all. He needs to give up his attraction for a married man and walk away with whatever self respect he has and never speak to the Frasers again. I didn't think Claire's speech of "You deserve that look of satisfaction on your face" was sincere either. It was more like the undertone of "Whoever you find happiness with, it had better not be my husband becuase he will never love you. Ever."

Since I just can’t not think about how Roy x Jamie could still happen and my dream scenario for the next episode, I’ll just drop this here for fanfic writers looking for ideas since none of this will happen and I know I'm too lazy to write this myself 😂
(Jamie was in two promo pics so he’ll probably be a background character with zero lines but some great pantomimes)
Jamie won’t be called up for England to play in the qualifications for the World Cup in Qatar, which is a downer at first, but he soon recovers (he’s a battler after all). And he still could make the cut for the actual World Cup team (I don’t know if this is how it works with the teams, but I doubt the show would care). Therefore, Roy and he have some extra intense training while everyone else is on break. Finally, we get a proper training montage to the tune of “Physical” by Olivia Newton-John.
(Sam also won’t be called up for Nigeria since Akufo is a piece of shit. 😞 But he’ll focus on his restaurant during the break, which is Akufo’s next target on his irrational mission to ruin everything good for Sam. But this will lead to Sam and Simi bonding some more and becoming an official couple. And Rebecca somehow gets Akufo to stop with his scheming. (He probably wants to buy Richmond to kick Sam off the team…) Maybe thanks to a bet similar to the dart competition with Rupert.)
But back to our main guys.
Roy is still pondering what he wants out of life (For once this season he hasn’t forgotten the lesson he learned between episodes!). During a training session, he asks Jamie what Jamie wants out of life. Jamie answers something like “I just want to live life as me!” which initially has Roy rolling his eyes. Until Jamie explains that most of his life he has lived as the man his dad wanted him to be instead of being true to himself. And that he wants to become the best version of himself to finally deserve to be loved and cared for. (And Roy looks puzzled like “??? But everyone already loves and cares about him???? Even me.”, but of course doesn’t say so…)
Then something along the lines of “I wanted and got a lot of things for the wrong reasons, so … maybe it is better not to get what you want but what you need.”
Jamie also comes out as bisexual during this exchange. He tells Roy how Colin’s coming out and everyone’s acceptance made him think maybe he can actually be bisexual. Instead of always hiding this part of himself, just because his dad hated it when he got the notion Jamie might be into boys.
(All of this then sets up that Jamie turns down the offer to play for England in Qatar, since he won’t support a World Cup in a country where they still have strict anti-gay laws. Clarifying that it is more important for Jamie to be the best, most authentic version of himself instead of being the best and most successful footballer he could become)
Keeley loses KJPR since Jack pulls the funding. And she realises the firm was something she might have wanted, but not what she had actually needed at this point in her life.
When Keeley goes to Rebecca to talk about this, she runs into Jamie in the hallway, they have a sweet exchange (he encourages her not to give up on her dreams), that is witnessed by Roy who has this yearning, slightly jealous expression (Cue for Isaac to talk about body language and something along the lines of “Sorry, coach, looks like she’s over you”)
Roy and Jamie do a school visit similar to the one with Ted and Roy in “Trent Crimm, the Independent”. Jamie meets Phoebe and Ms Bowen and while they interact, there is a similar wistful shot of Roy pondering … something. (Trent is there for his book and looks at Roy like “I know what you are”)
(Alternatively, Phoebe’s team visits Nelson Road and that is where the locker room stills are from—I just want Jamie to meet Phoebe!)
In a later scene, Roy is watching TV with Phoebe, getting snacks while some commercials run.
Cut to Keeley slouching on her couch, watching the same station as Roy and Phoebe.
And then Jamie’s bantr commercial plays. He says something super profound. That he is looking for a relationship where they help each other become the best version of themselves and support each other in reaching their life goals. This visibly moves Keeley.
Cut back to Roy and Phoebe. Roy tells Phoebe he has to go somewhere, to get what he really needs.
And then “You can’t always get what you want” by the Rolling Stones starts playing, while Roy makes his way to his unknown destination. Is it Keeley? Ms Bowen? (Spoiler, it is neither!)
(The song is both a callback to Jamie comparing him and Roy to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards AND to “She’s a Rainbow” playing while Roy returned to Richmond. And the chorus very well suits the theme of the episode as I wrote it in my head.
Edit: I also just noticed they used this song for the season 3 trailer, which I had totally forgotten about, so it would make even more sense to pick it up at some point later in the season)
And we get a montage of what is going on in the other characters’ lives, finishing of their storylines for this episode.
Rebecca has realised throughout the episode that she wants to give Sam another shot. But when she reaches Ola’s she sees Sam and Simi being cute together and kissing. Rebecca turns around, runs off and slams into someone. She drops her phone and when she reaches down to get it, the other person does the same. Cue to them looking at each other and … it is Dutch Guy! (And at last Rebecca gets to see his penis!)
Feeling sympathy for Bex, Nate leaked information to the press about Rupert's cheating (just like he did with Ted, but this time it is for the greater good!!!). Rupert finds out who the source is and tears Nate down verbally, really humiliating & insulting him to the core (to stress the stark difference between Rupert and Ted). In the end, Rupert threatens to fire Nate if he makes another mistake. Nate is devastated at first, but finds comfort with Jade. She is proud of him for exposing Rupert for the cheating asshole he is and reassures Nate (who is a worried mess about possibly losing his job) that she likes him and not his money and fame.
(At first I wanted Rupert to outright fire Nate, but Rupert probably wouldn’t want more bad publicity by firing the Wonder Kid AND it would be a better end for Nate’s arc if he is the one walking away from Rupert.)
Someone rings at Keeley’s door, but … it is not Roy, it is Barbara. She tells Keeley that she quit her job with Jack since she is sick of collecting snow globes. She rather wants to build a business with Keeley. (And for the rest of the season Keeley works on building her own little PR firm, slowly growing instead of suddenly being overwhelmingly BIG because of funding and expectations, with AFC Richmond as her primary client.)
(Also something with Ted, but I haven’t settled on some specific scenario. Maybe some realisation that the team may want him to stay but they don’t need him anymore, therefore it is better for him to leave so they can grow on their own. I’m fairly certain he’ll leave—or at least he decides to leave—by the end of the series, but it might be too early for him to actually come to this realisation. Either Trent or Rebecca or both will play a big part in his storyline this episode)
Next cut is Jamie on the couch, reading a book about football tactics. It rings at his door, and when he opens, *gasp*, it is Roy, a bit breathless and sweaty from running too fast. Jamie is a bit confused. Roy explains he has finally realised what he wants out of his life and that he maybe not get it, but he has to at least try. Then Roy confesses to Jamie that he wants him. A brief moment of hesitation before they kiss.
Fade to black and the end credits start rolling.
OR, if they go for a more gut-wrenching scenario and Jamie x Keeley x Roy endgame: Roy reaches Jamie’s house just in time to see Keeley standing at the door, both of them talking and then Keeley going in for a kiss. Shot of a very sad Roy turning away while Keeley and Jamie retreat into the house.

Yellowstone’s Anti-Adoption Storyline Ticks Me Off
Everytime the words “He’s not your son,” comes out of Beth’s mouth about Jamie when she is talking to John makes me want to reach through my TV screen and smack the taste of out her mouth.  Just because he isn’t a flesh and blood Dutton like Lee, Beth and Kayce, he was adopted by John and Evelyn and just as much his child as the other three are.  That attitude of Beth’s makes me highly dislike her character and want to see Karma kick her dead in her butt.  I don’t know what the writers of the show are trying to accomplish with this nonsense but I’m not a fan of it.
