Recently rewatched Dr Quinn: Medicine Woman and just had to sketch something. What a throwback to my childhood! And funnily enough one of broadcasters here started to stream the show this month, ha!

Thanks for your kind words and for your very interesting additions to my comment of this scene.

I totally agree with you when you say that Jamie is someone who sets himself and his needs aside for the group; he doesn't want anyone to get in trouble because of this accident and Rip's behavior justifies his actions: we see him being quite worried about Jamie and yes, it's not just because they're friends but also because he is the boss' son and there would probably be consequences if he got hurt.

I also find your take on the card game very fitting! It's true that Jamie wanted to be a cowboy and therefore would like to become a part of the group, so for once he intentionally lets victory slip from his hands instead of forcing a bunch of probably underpaid cowboys to hand him their money. (Jimmy saying 'you made the right choice' when he folds is the cherry on top imo).

The fact that Jamie sacrifices himself for others is also very well visible throughout his life: he's forced into a career he's not interested in with the only purpose to serve the Duttons and the ranch, and he was forced countless times to make decisions and hide things for the Yellowstone, putting himself at risk. In the scene where John confronts him about Beth's abortion he instantly takes Beth's side without even listening to Jamie's version of the story. Jamie then punches the glass door, flips and goes "All I do is give!" and -aside for Wes Bentley's awesome performance- that is literally true!

All the 'Jamie is selfish' storyline they keep trying to push down our throats is SO stupid it's ridiculous!

So, I've been rewatching the scene in the bunkhouse when the boys are messing around with the lasso and Ryan hurts Jamie on accident, and in this specific scene, when they ask him if he's fine, he goes "when is it my turn with the rope?" and everybody laughs. Then Rip arrives, he asks him if he's ok and he answers "yeah" and smiles. However, when Rip sends everyone to bed, we see that Jamie looks pretty beat up. I think that even in that interaction Jamie does what he always does: even if he's hurt he puts on a mask and goes on.

I don't know if I'm reading too much into it, but I think it's part of how he grew up (aka "work hard, don't complain, don't be a wuss") and I'm not sure if it was intentional on the writers' part, but if it was it's a pretty cool way to keep him in character and add an interesting detail about his psychology.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was all Wes Bentley's idea tho, since unlike the writing team he actually understands the character he's playing
