Emma constantly running away from Hook showed he was abusive and she wanted to get away. He's always literally holding her back and stopping her from running
hmm. interesting take ! but I disagree.
what we see from Emma is that she runs when she's scared - she runs when life gets hard, or relationships get hard, or when she feels she's going to get hurt. growing up, she never had anyone who cared for her or be there to miss her. so she would always run. she never had anyone to run after her, no one had ever cared enough. she said it herself - she will continue to run until she misses a place. Emma also guards her heart carefully. After what she went through, especially in regards to Neal, she holds her cards close and neverletss anyone in. the last time she opened up to someone - he left her in jail and never came back.
this culminates in the end of season 3 - she wants to run again. she has a family and friends in storybrooke, and that scares her. having people she cares about means having people who can hurt her. so she wanted to run away again. would a life alone, away from her family, had been better ? I'd say not.
but running away is all Emma knows, all she has ever known. a life of loneliness, shutting people off before they can get close and have a chance to hurt her. if anyone gets to break her heart, it's going to be her.
now hook. hook came into her life, and he was a constant from the start. even when she pushed him away, he wouldn't budge, wouldn't leave her. he stayed by her side, showed her that he wasn't going to leave like everyone else. Emma needed that - needed someone to show her they cared enough to ignore her attempts at distance.
why did she need this ? because she used the distance as a safety mechanism. she would push people away to see if they care enough to pull her back in. no one ever did. not before she met hook.
he was by her side through it all - although he was vocal and open about his intentions of winning her heart, he never pushed her. he gave her space, let her come to him at her own pace. even after their adventure to the past, and after she agreed to stay in storybrooke, he sat in front of the dinner waiting for her to come to him.
ultimately, killian wasn't holding Emma back. he was keeping her anchored to her home. yes, he was stopping her from running away, but I ask again - is that a bad thing ? that he wanted her to stay in storybrooke and be with her family. (its important to note that he only mentioned her family, never himself. it was Emma that always read between his lines and included him in that family).
so yes, in a sense - killian is keeping her from running. but that isn't a bad thing, nor does it make him abusive. she was never running away from him - season 4 and onward shows her cling onto him (even in death). she was running away from being hurt, and he showed her she doesn't have to do that anymore.

Emma’s wardrobe changing to be more white and floral after Hook moves in and everyone constantly regarding her masculine style as a “wall” is one of the most blatantly misogynistic tropes I’ve ever witnessed and it is WILD to me that people still can’t see that.
Emma: *dresses masculine for most of her life, only dresses hyper feminine when actively playing a character*
Emma as soon as she gets with H00k: *begins to dress more feminine, regularly wearing flowy blouses and trading in her classic red leather jacket with a red blazer*
Y’all: Ah yes, the pinnacle of character development, good for her

Look, I'm not usually one to tell people what they should ship or not. Really, that's not my business.
Yes, there's a "but".
But I am one to "tell" the writers what they should write.
The thing about captainswan? Other than the total absence of chemistry between the actors? Hook is the kind of guy that makes my skin crawl.
There's two kinds of redemption arcs. The ones that work and the ones that don't. Not surprisingly, male characters tend to have the latter. For two reasons: 1. the writers tend to think guys should have everything forgiven to them for the smallest effort. 2. toxic masculinity. Yeah, men get away with a lot just because "boys will be boys". They have the right to be rude, or even toxic, just because they are cis straight males full of testosterone. (I need to vomit istg)
Yeah, there's two kinds of redemption arcs. Guess which one I prefer: Hook's or Regina's?
There's a reason why I ship swanqueen and it's not (only) because I'm queer.

"Everything okay?"
David knew Neal wasn't a threat to Emma's safety. He never treated him the same way he did Hook. If he truly thought Neal was bad, he would've threatened him here.

I just rewatched OUAT season 1 and realised something.
From a writing perspective, the show feels complete with the main characters in season 1 - Rumple, Regina, Snow, Emma, David and Henry.
There was no need for Hook to become a main character from a writing standpoint. I’m saying this very critically. His character doesn’t serve any purpose to the plot, he’s just there as Emma’s love interest. It’s the same with Zelena and Robin. They never brought anything unique to the show in the later seasons. All these characters should have been left behind after season 3, after their story arcs were completed. Their actions have not contributed to the main plot in an entertaining way and rather seemed forced. Hook’s story arc should have been limited till Rumple and Neal. Also, I think this is the reason why Neal fit so effortlessly into the story for me. He is directly connected to the plot and Baelfire has been there from season one. As for Regina and Emma’s love interests, Regina anyway ended up having none towards the end of the show so what was the need to drag the Robin chapter so long with all the back and forth? If they introduced Robin, they could have killed him off way sooner, that way it comes full circle for Regina or not introduced him at all and have Regina separate from someone else she loves (not Henry). Having another loved one being killed but this time she coped with it in a healthy way. That’s what they made Robin’s death about anyway. It still felt forced though. And Emma could have rekindled her relationship with Neal to complete the family circle or even stayed single leaving their relationship open ended. Maybe she could have had a fling with one of the side characters in any of the seasons while keeping Neal constant in her life (maybe even August since they already built up a little bit of that chemistry in season one. They should have kept him around more, I think he would have been a useful secondary character). I don’t think her arc needed a love interest & married with a family in the traditional sense anyway. She was grew up in our world and should have ended up with somebody who would understand her in both ways. All these main characters did not need side characters like Hook, Robin or Zelena to become series regular. They felt complete within themselves, their stories felt complete and didn’t need to be complicated with forced storylines involving these other characters 🤷‍♀️

Isn’t it funny that I adore Captain Hook when he is meant to be a villain (Peter Pan and its various remakes) but hate him vigorously when he is supposed to be the hero (Once).

So far I’m on season two, but already I’ve got a list of things I’d do if I owned the legal rights to OUAT.
In no particular order; this is that list:
1. Make SwanQueen canon.
2. Have Cora put her heart back in so she can be the mom that Regina deserves. (Definitely have Regina and Cora go to therapy though.)
3. Tf was all that Peter Pan/Neverland business. I get that that’s where we got Henry realizing Regina was actually trying to be a better person and that her past shouldn’t define her future, but like it was a dumb ark. So I’m getting rid of that.
4. In place of the Neverland ark, we’d see Regina and Emma exploring their relationship, Regina and Cora mending theirs, Henry would stop being a little shit. Maybe there’d be something silly and Emma and Regina would share TLK?
5. Snow and Regina would actively try to understand each other, Regina would explain what being married to the soggy raisin was like and snow would see that Regina wasn’t evil she was just hurting.
6. I’d get rid of Neal somehow, like I personally think that a 200+ year old getting a 17 year old pregnant is creepy. Even if he wasn’t in triple digits, he would’ve been around 27 if the show is to be believed and that’s still statutory r*pe in my opinion. Like yeah I get Henry needs to be born but maybe figure out a way to keep him from trying to win Emma back? Like he fucked up big time so, he’d definitely have to go.
7. Hook’s gay. No elaboration. He’s gay. Fight me.
8. Honestly the blue fairy meddled in so much and from what I’ve seen she’s 100% evil. So she’d definitely have to go.
9. Rumple and belle, I know a lot of people like this ship but tbh, it’s kinda icky. Like there’s definitely a Stockholm Syndrome type of thing going on. Idk. Maybe Rumple and Hook can get it on? Belle can be with Mulan.
10. The whole, “Regina’s soulmate has a lion tattoo.” thing? Weird but people change, so I’d explore that but with Tink admitting that people’s soulmates can change as the person evolves.
11. Emma’s tattoo would definitely be explained. Because we all deserved that story.
12. Zelena saw how Cora treated Regina when Rumple showed her Regina’s life so I’d say that she wouldn’t have held any resentment towards Regina. I honestly think the writers could’ve made a much better storyline for them.
13. Another thing, why’d they just send Ruby away? Like, she’s such a great character and they just tossed her aside. They could’ve come up with something better. Especially if she was gonna just pop back up at random times.
14. The Robin/Zelena thing also gave me the ick. So that’s out. That shouldn’t have even been a thing.
15. I liked the time travel thing but if I made Zelena and Regina have a better relationship then that wouldn’t have existed so I’d have to find another villain to make it happen. BLUE!! She’d totally do it.
16. Emma would totally fall through the portal, regina would follow her because “Ms. Swan when will you stop being an idiot?!”
17. Maybe rather than being thrown into one point in time we could see Emma and Regina navigate through different points in their life while trying to keep blue from messing things up?
18. I’d have liked to see a bit more of Henry exploring his role as author. Maybe he’d write the stories properly rather than having a biased story that portrays things as black and white. Idk, I’d just like to see the stories get written as they should have been rather than the way Issac (was that his name?) wrote them.
19. Snow and charming would definitely apologize to Maleficent for taking her child and forcing her to take on Emma’s darkness. Maybe I’d show Emma and Lily finding a spell or something to balance themselves so they wouldn’t be so messed up.
20. Dark Swan ark would definitely happen but it would totally be explored the way it should’ve been. It was the “Dark Swan” ark not the “Pity me Hook and Dark Swan” ark.
Honestly this is all I’ve got so far, if you guys want more I’ll definitely add more but I have to get further along in the show because currently this is all I can remember.
And if you have some things you’d like to add to this list, please do! I would love to see what you all think!

I just wanted to take a moment to appreciate THIS moment right here.
regina says this because killian took a stab at her saying " maybe you like not having emma around, maybe you like having your son to yourself ", SOMETHING ALONG THOSE LINES.
but what I really like about this is regina took offense to that, she thought it was insulting that killian could even think that.
my theory *pulls up a chair*, or should I say, GAY theory, is that regina was so quick to respond, not only because she LOVES one upping hook (a topic for another day), but because she could never think that way about emma.
it's insulting that hook could ever say that about reginas relationship with emma because she needs her.
I don't think this was just about bickering with the pirate she doesn't like, I think it's regina defending her relationship with emma from someone who oh so desperately wants her out of emmas life (he's shown jealousy when emma was paying more attention to regina than him !).
regina genuinely does care about emma, and she genuinely was trying to get her back to the best of her ability. I just think their relationship and friendship has so many layers and regina being a little defensive? is definitely one of said layers.
this could also be read as regina defending her wits because we all know she's smart and wouldn't just leave the emma situation alone, but that also leads back to her wanting and trying to get emma back.

Random thought
If SwanQueen was canon and Regina disappeared like Hook did in Season 6, Emma never would have just assumed that she gave up on their relationship.
Am I the only one who thinks that she would know there was something wrong and that she was in trouble?

if ouat had ended with emma realizing that her relationship with h00k was taking so much out of her, that she was allowing herself to be the object of his affection because she truly believed that she couldn't have anything better, that she was trauma bonded to him, that she was using the relationship as a way to cope with her childhood abandonment issues, and then dumping his ass, i would have easily been able to forgive e&a for the years of garbage they gave us.
because that's how abuse is. it can take years for someone to get out of toxicity for a multitude of reasons, and if the writers had actually let emma deal with her problems and actually figure out what she needed, that would've been fine.
but no. she had to get married and "live happily ever after".
what's worse is that she was clearly written that way, whether it was intentional or not. emma spent seasons 4 and 5a absolutely terrified of how h00k felt about her. her reaction when he said that she's his happy ending says it all. She even tells him canonically that the only reason why she told him she loved him that first time was because she thought she'd never see him again. she literally took back saying "i love you".
emma swan's story should not have ended with marriage and babies. that was never what her story was about, and by season 6, it felt like she was a completely different person altogether.

Swanfire Month Day 29 | Scene that made you the happiest
youtube
I know I said the scene before this broke my heart, but this is what saves it every damn time.
Emma has a lot of moments where she's angry or betrayed on this show, but this is one of the few times you see her feel actual guilt for it. Like Neal says, I don't think she should or has to be. But the fact that she hates that this confession hurts Neal says a lot. It proves she does still care and love him.
Neal's reaction makes me happy because unlike her other love interests (Graham and Hook) , he isn't upset. He tells her its okay, she has every right to feel those things.
His confession after this falls into another reason why I love Swanfire. Neal says he'll always fight for Emma, but it's not in a way that pressures her. There's a comment on this video that points out the way Neal fights for Emma, is by literally fighting to save her life and protect her. He is going to prove to her he's not that scared little boy that abandoned her when they were teenagers. He's a man, who knows she can protect herself but will step in and do so when she needs it. He's not going to stand in her way and undermine her. She'll never have to wonder again if Neal loves her, because he'll continue to show it.
It doesn't hurt that Killian witnesses all of it. This follows him forcing her to kiss him as "reward" for saving her father...like 2 days after Neal "died". He heard Emma in the caves profess her love for Neal, as well as her apologies for saying she wishes he was still dead. He's there for Neal confessinng his own truth. It says a lot that Emma doesn't confront Killian about his confession, only to ask why Neal was upset.
This is a different scene, though also stemmed from this one, Emma flat out tells Killian both the kiss and his confession meant nothing. While, clearly, it bothers her that Neal is hurt by both her confession and the kiss.
Overall, this scene makes me happy for a few reasons. It shows who Emma and Neal are at their core. Emma is jaded and makes quips, but she truly doesn't want to hurt anyone and cares about their feelings. Neal is forgiving and empathetic while owning his faults. Both prove they care deeply for one another. Secondly, it puts Killian in his place and reminds him who Emma truly cares about. It shows him what love really is. It's not forcing yourself on someone until you wear them down. It's honesty, through actions. Third, it sets up what all Swanfire fans know to be true. Had Neal not died, he and Emma would've gotten back together. This laid the groundwork for everything that would come after Neverland. Killian promising to back off, Neal asking Emma out for lunch. Even in the midst of Quiet Minds, before *it happened*, you can see Emma is open to the idea.
And it all started with this discussion in Neverland.
