Hey, thanks for replying - yeah I've been in fandom for most of my life, but have never been that into fanfic. Bridgerton I think is the first for which I started reading. Despite my minimal experience, I'm aware of the general rules and don't believe I've ever violated them. Based on what you've said about constructive criticism though, I have perhaps been going about it differently. When an author says smthn like 'let me know what you think,' I'll give it freely. I don't do this for fics I don't like, but for the fics I do like, it feels like excluding the criticism is weirdly disrespectful. I want to show that I wasn't just reading with half a brain, and that I spent time thinking about how I felt about certain parts. I try and make sure I use 'i think/I agree' a lot, and I believe I used these phrases excessively in my first ask to communicate that everything is my humble opinion. When discussing the antwina fic I mightve neglected to do that, and as a result mightve ended up sounding harsher.

Anyway, I get your point about fanfic being fun and the distinction you draw bw it and published fiction. I wasn't thinking about it that way. Sometimes fanfic is written so well that it's hard to forget you're not reading a published piece, and that as thought provoking as it is, you're not meant to share those thoughts if the author hasn't requested it. Smthn to keep in mind ig.

No, I agree with you about the headcanon thing. There was this modern au I read some time ago that had kanthony dealing with grief. By the end of the story, we saw them both in better places in their lives after having been broken up for a while, and it was clear that both would still lead happy, healthy lives even if they didn't have each other. Ofc they got back together though, and one of the reasons why it worked the second time around was bc they knew they were stable enough individually that they wouldn't be destroyed if things bw them ended again. I found it totally believable and loved that that idea. For your fic, I don't remember all that I said, but I think one of the reasons I felt differently about anthony's ability to recover is bc it's a regency au, so no therapy and no one to really help show him the path to recovery. Ik you said heartbreak is nothing like death of parent and its aftermath, so it wouldn't really be something he'd need help for (time would be enough), and while I agree those two things aren't equivalent, for someone like Anthony whose repeatedly experienced loss (of 'two' parents, of youth, etc.) and who would lose the one other person who could understand/take care of him, everything would sort of pile up into a lifelong sadness. I think the park scene you're referring to is in the featherington gardens in ep 8 (?) I agree that at that point he wasn't hoping for anything and was resigned to a fate of losing her. But I think we disagree on what exactly his survival after that entails. It seems like you think he'll recover completely (?), whereas I think he'll survive, channel the hurt into care for his family, but nonetheless always keep that hurt buried within him. If he had married edwina, then I think she would've been too much of a trigger for him to keep it buried, and he’d lash out at her/become more erratic. I think I brought up a scenario where someone else who's gone through similar experiences can forge a similar bond to him that kate did, in which case I could see him getting over it. Either way, for me, time alone isn't enough for him to forget her.

About lesbian edwina - no you're definitely right; when I mentioned lesbwina that was me mostly joking. There's nothing in the show to suggest that. Even when I said the reason she didn't recognize the tension bw kanthony was bc she doesn't understand straight ppl, i wasnt being serious at all. Me wanting a lesbwina is entirely wistful thinking.

I do want to engage and I am always happy to talk head-canons and meta, so feel free to message about those.

In thinking about it, though, I wasn't sure if your ask was seeking genuine connection because, while many people thoughtfully engaged with the Anthony/Edwina get married AU or ignored it because it wasn’t for them, it is by far the one thing that people seem determined to argue about as if I had concluded wrong. Almost a version of ‘This hurt me and therefore it is not true/you are wrong’ versus ‘This hurt me AAAAAAAAh’. And the former is exhausting as you can imagine and how I originally understood your ask.

Your definition of recovery seems very similar to mine actually! You’ve described him doing productive things to cope while acknowledging he’s been hurt in the past, which is pretty much what I think too. To me therapy isn't the only way to get through it though so that's not a deal-breaker for me. I also can’t see Anthony as Miss Havisham where the past is always intruding on the present.

Ha, I didn’t realise this was gentle teasing as it was mixed in with other things in the context of characterisations based directly on canon! Of course, pairings are whatever one’s little heart desires (meta is a bit different). But yeah, I do that too – almost none of my slash ships have ever been canonical (again I exclude Stucky from being made up because fuck you Marvel you wrote that and then denied them like COWARDS). Lesbwina is a pretty fun characterisation for sure! I’m pretty sure I have a WIP kicking around somewhere feat. Lesbwina 😊

I've seen a few Superhero AUS and one had Anthony as Batman. I can see why. Anthony is competent in certain areas, a hot mess in others, has a complicated relationship with everyone in his life and if he didn't essentially become a father at age 19, he might've adopted every orphan within a 20 mile radius.

Not sure who the others could be.

My lovely, I have a huge love of superheros, example A being my arc reactor pfp, so I love this ask.

Anthony is definitely the rich guy who bought/made his own powers for one reason or another.

And what do you mean he didn't adopt others? Of course he did they just happened to end up marrying his siblings so there was no official adoption.

I could see the other Bridgertons following his lead, and possibly Edmund's, if we wanna make this the family business. Anthony starts/finishes their training because they're gonna do it anyway to save himself from a heart attack he might as well make sure they're well trained. The other Bridgerton I guess we could count as his hoard of Robins that later become their own heroes.

Benedict I can see having an illusion sort of power to fit with his artsy self. Or maybe he has some sort of liquid manipulation that also works on paints.

Colin I can see him acquiring powers on complete accident. He went somewhere for his travels one time and then through a series of accidents he gained his powers. I'm thinking possibly the ability of some sort of charmspeak. He's able to persuade others to give him what he wants or information with his voice and the person he aims it at is unable or very hard for them to resist.

Daphne comes off as a Black Canary type. Badass martial artist that has the ability to use a sound manipulation when she screams.

Eloise is some sort of sharpshooter or archer. She makes all her own arrows, some of them being gag arrows she uses to play tricks on her siblings.

Francesca has a more developed sound manipulation than Daphne does. Her lends into a perfect pitch when it comes her hearing but Francesca can also mimic any sound, warp it, or use it as a physical force like Daphne does.

Gregory gives off speedster vibes. Maybe like a mixture between Robin and Kid Flash. He's currently training/side kick to Anthony but he also has super speed on his side.

Hyacinth I see doing spy work, kind of like a Black Widow character. She's got some enhancements so her body reactions and martial arts are better. She's also able to read body language better than any of her siblings.

The spouses could be fun ones to work with, and since I'm in a villain x hero mood let's do villain spouses.

Simon and Gareth are a pair. Both abused and thrown out by their fathers, at different times, they were taken in by Lady Danbury, who kind of comes off as like a neutral party. She basically does what she wants. Simon was doing his own villain thing when Lady Danbury sent Gareth his way and basically said, "Train your cousin or else."

Simon also kind of gives off rich man who made his own powers/weapons energy so I'm gonna go with that. We can make him a foil to Anthony. Gareth I kind of get Damian Wayne vibes when it comes to abilities, so like a trained assassin (from Lady Danbury) from a young age.

Kate kind of gives off Vixen vibes where she can adopt abilities of different animals from around the world. I can also see her speaking to different animals. I see her becoming a villain in thievery to help Mary and Edwina. They don't know she's a villain though.

Sophie's main villainy is thievery as well. After her stepmother left her homeless Sophie started to steal because well it was pretty and she wanted it. Her powers over shapeshifting certainly help when she's jewelry shopping.

Penelope gives off was once a hero but fell into villainy, possibly became a spy for the villains. I see it as a mission went wrong and she was left behind or thought she was, possibly almost died. She has psionic abilbities, think like Professor X, or Jean Grey. Mind powers like telepathy, telekinesis, mental shield, psychic energy manipulation, and astral projection.

Phillip I see becoming a villain because the morals of the good side stopped him from going towards "the necessary" steps in his research that could have saved his children's mother. He feels guilty about not being able to save his children's mother so now they have to grow up without one. Plant manipulation that was passed along to the twins. He's still a good dad but he's also a villain raising his little villains.

Weirdly enough I can see Michael becoming a villain for John. I don't know the specifics but the choices Michael made was to help/benefit John. Michael has some sort of hypnosis powers on his side.

Lucy I can see turning to villainy for revenge against her uncle who made her life hell and for the brother who left her there. I also see her with the ability of invisibility and light manipulation. When you're planning revenge it helps when people don't know you're there planning, or that you can hide your plans by manipulating the light around them.

Author's Note: this is set in the Mafia Au but it’s a one we’re they never went legitimate…

“Lady Penwood…” came the voice of her trusted advisor… John Footman had been by her side through thick and thin and remained loyal even after she’d joined the Penwood Crime family with that of the Bridgerton Crime family when she married Benedict and her second in command, Kate Sharma married Anthony.

Together they’d become the most feared crime family in the country and no one fucked with them…

Or she thought.

She looked up from her note book, her pen perched between her teeth as she figured out her next moves.

She and Anthony ran different parts of the business. She handled the illegal goods and he dealt with everything else. She had the connections.

“Yes John what is it?” She asked, glancing at her husband who was sketching again.

Sophie loved that he’d sometimes just sit and draw her whilst she was working and now she was pregnant again with their second child, he was obsessed and couldn’t stop drawing her.

“I… erm… there has been… there has been an incident” John said, the hesitation was noticeable and Benedict didn’t like the nerves coming from their head of security and he put his pencil down and got up from his slouched position.

“What kind of incident?” Benedict asked.

There were a million possibilities going through through his mind at that very moment but what came out of his mouth had not even made the top 1000 things he thought it could have possibly been.

“Ms Metcalf and the security team… they… they were attacked on their way back with Master Charlie…”

Sophie’s face drained of all colour as she felt terror like she’d never felt before.

Benedict stood up “are… are they okay?!” He demanded

“I…I…” John stammered

“Out with man!!!” Benedict yelled

“Ben! Stop! Just give him a chance!” Sophie managed to get out. She needed her husband to keep his cool, to keep calm… at least for now.

Revenge would come later.

“Jameson and King took a bullet each, Emily has a broken nose and concussion” John managed to explain and Sophie was getting irate at the thought of someone touching the security team around her 18 month old son and his nanny.

Emily was practically family. She would be family eventually as she was engaged to Edwina but that was besides the point.

Sophie had made it clear in the last that her family was out of bounds… and to attack the men around her son… this was unforgivable and was tantamount to declaring war…

But she noticed he hadn’t said anything about Charlie “what about Charlie? Is he safe?” Sophie asked

“I… they took… they took…” John stammered trying to fight back the tears he felt and the news he didn’t want to pass on.

“Took who?”

“Ma…master Charlie…”

Sophie let out a scream of pain and fury like she’d known she could manage, it was a sound that put the fear of god in anyone who heard it and Benedict’s noise was something akin to that of a wounded animal.

“Who where they John? Who the fuck has my son?!??” Sophie screamed.

“Please calm down Lady Penwood!”

“Don’t Fucking tell me to calm down!! Someone has my baby!!!! I will fucking not calm down!!!”

“Sophie I get your furious and worried and I am too but please… just please try and calm a bit for the baby… we will find out” Benedict said turning on John

“What is being done?”

“I’m scanning all the CCTV in the area. They weren’t too far from the house when it happened sir. I’ve sent for Eloise, Mr Anthony and Edwina to help… we have some evidence as Emily fought back”

“I want everything on my desk in an hour. Everyone is to be called in. No Fucking excuses. This a fucking code red. Anyone who doesn’t show, and doesn’t have a fucking good excuse is fired and assumed to be part of it and will be dealt accordingly!!! Whoever has taken my boy is going to Fucking pay for it…the gloves are off. They’ve picked a fight with the wrong Fucking family and anyone who gets in my way… will pay the fucking price” Sophie declared.

“Right away with Lady Penwood” John said and ran out of the room and the moment he was gone Sophie’s strength left her and Benedict saw as he rushed to his pregnant wives side and caught her just in time and held her as she sobbed.

“My baby!! They’ve got our baby Ben” she cried

“We’ll get him back. They’re stupid to think they will get away with this. We will get him back. I swear on my life. Come hell or high water and if they’ve hurt a single hair on his head i will personally make sure they pay for it with blood a hundred times worse than they have done to him” Benedict vowed as tears fell down his own face.

He wanted to go pound the pavement, bang on the doors of all their known associates and enemies and demand they tell what they know.

They needed Anthony here. He’d keep a calmer head than them right now and help them through this.

It was the longest hour of their lives as they waited for news and their family. And finally Anthony burst in, a face like thunder, looking scarier than Sophie had ever remembered seeing him as he barged In “we’ve got a lead on Charlie!”

There's been a lot of discussion about why Kate might think Anthony is still marrying her out of Obligation even after well...

And let's take a look shall we, Let's take a look at what's really happening to Kate during this scene because Simone Ashley's performance is so nuanced and beautiful, apparently I write essays on it now.

So this Kate, we know has been repressing what she wants since her father died, and if you wanna think about why she's done that and why she feels this responsibility I have a small (large) treatise on her relationship with Mary that sheds a bit of light on it.

Anthony, less than 24 hours before this, held her so close, and as good as admitted that he felt something, asked her to admit that she felt something too, asked her to deny what was between tham, and yes she didn't say what she felt, because Daphne walked in and she was I think still very confused about it, but look at it. Look at the way she leans her head against his and responds to his touch.

I wanna talk a little about Why this scene has me in such a chokehold. Why it's so important that it does come at the very end.

We're going under the cut because this is probably going to get long

Now if any of you have read any of my AUs you know that most every one of them has a scene like this. Offside most of all. I love Mary and kate's relationship and it's my absolute favourite Parent-child relationship in the Bridgerton series. Because they are mother and daughter by choice.

But with that choice comes the assumption or the feeling that one day, one day, one of them could choose not to have this relationship. Especially for Kate who, even in the book, craves belonging to something. Even though she keeps her emotions so tightly guarded, she wants to desperately to be loved.

And Mary loves her. Kate knows there's no difference in the way Mary treats her and Edwina, but there's a tiny voice in the back of her head that says If she chose to love you she could choose not to so easily. It's why we see this look on her face when Mary starts defending them all

you know i think in the Anthony x Edwina married au where they are content, it could happen if Kate wasn't present or existing bc i feel if she is Anthony would know everything he could feel, and Edwina would notice that but he would never feel that way about her, so they would be miserable. but in au where they could be content together but emotionally detached would be an au where Kate didn't exist bc she is the one that presents Edwina that there's a possibility of getting a love match, that she DESERVES a love match and not only a sorta business marriage, and also makes Anthony feel the love he was never looking for himself (that neither he or Kate were looking for themselves)

i agree with you! i truly do! which is why writing a fic where they have a tolerable marriage, where they become friends of some sort, while staying in character and with kate existing in the world is such a tasty challenge!

i haven't quite committed to writing said fic so i haven't really thought through how i would go about telling this story in a satisfying way but i feel like it can be done?

(what i don't agree with are the fics where anthony and edwina have an antagonistic relationship - that just doesn't vibe with their characters to me, personally. like i can see them both being dissatisfied and unhappy with their marriage but it's an entirely internal dialogue that doesn't really ever reach the surface - there’s a fic on ao3 that shows this sosososososo well but it’s not long enough for me! i want mooooooore.)

He's not going to call. Kate hissed at herself for what must have been the hundredth time that morning. Men like Anthony Bridgerton do not call on young ladies just because they danced with them once. And besides, even if he did call, he wouldn't be calling on her.

She hadn't been surprised when Mr. Bridgerton's voice had called out to them, asking after Edwina. It had happened at least ten times in the short amount of time since they'd entered the ballroom after all. A young man came, made calf eyes at her sister and sometimes got a dance for his trouble. But, newly arrived in London though she was, even she had heard Mr. Bridgerton's reputation. The gossip sheets were brimming with his exploits, mistresses and widows, women falling at his feet whenever he looked at them. And Kate was not going to allow Edwina to fall victim to a man who was not serious about marriage.

Humiliating though it was, they both knew what their financial situation was, and while Mary wasn't going to be throwing them in the poor house any time soon, either she or Edwina needed to marry very well. They didn't have time to be led in a merry dance by a notorious rake and left, reputation ruined, at the close of the season. And so, Kate had taken it upon herself to wee out the unworthy from her sisters veritable gaggle of admirers and Mr. Bridgerton would be no exception.

He'd played his hand excellently, she could admit, he'd been all politeness and good cheer when he'd asked her to dance, surely hoping to curry her favour. And Kate wasn't too proud to admit there had been something awfully disarming about his wide, open smile, a sort of kindness she hadn't expected from a man of his repute. Then there was the way his eyes had shined at her in the candlelight, and his hand had been like an open flame of its own when he'd led her in the dance. And perhaps, worst of all, the way when she'd challenged him, he'd seemed to thrive forward, rather than shrinking back. It was all rather befuddling. But one thing was certain, Edwina should not be allowed within ten feet of the man, she certainly wouldn't be able to keep her senses the way Kate could.

"You should stay, Kate." Mary said softly as she stood to leave the drawing room. She'd had quite enough of being living artwork for Edwina's suitors to smile at benignly for one day. Kate sighed. "Mary, you and I both know that none of the gentlemen calling will even notice I'm not here. They'd much rather have a chance to wax poetic to you than be forced into conversation with me." Mary tutted, continuing with her embroidery. "And should Mr. Bridgerton call?" Kate stilled momentarily, her cheeks warming before she forced herself to scoff "Should Mr. Bridgerton call, expect to find Newton flying up the stairs. Equally as likely I should think."

It had been like this ever since she'd left Mr Bridgerton's presence last night. A near constant stream of questions from Mary and Edwina most of which she'd sighed away. Edwina had been particularly tenacious after Mary went to bed, and she snuck into Kate's room as always. "Oh, Kate." Edwina had sighed, ever the romantic, "The way he looked at you." Kate had rolled her eyes. "He was merely trying to flatter me into currying favour with you." Edwina's brow had furrowed "Kate, he never even looked at me. And he certainly didn't ask me to dance. Nor any other young lady." And Kate hated that she knew Edwina was right. Hated that her traitorous heart had watched the dance floor for him all night, and not seen him once.

Mary seemed to laugh despite herself, and then sighing, she put down her embroidery. "At least stay here until I've spoken with cook." She said in her tone that brokered no room for argument, leaving the room before Kate could protest even if she wanted to. Kate sighed as she fell back against the sofa, rather despondently. "Miss Sharma are you at home for callers?" The Butler's voice startled Kate, her posture ramrod straight once more as she took the proffered card her heart skipping traitorously as her finger traced the words there, unbidden

And for the life of her, she didn't know why she did it. It would have been so easy in Mary's absence to turn him away but instead she said: "Yes, Show him in. And then inform Lady Sharma."

The butler smiled and retreated, and Kate tried to stay calm despite the inexplicable racing of her heart. And then the door opened and there he was. Looking every bit as handsome in the daylight as he had last night. His hair falling into his eyes a little, his face lighting in the same disarming smile when he saw her.

"Miss Sharma, How do you do?" He said, his bow encumbered slightly by the veritable florist stand he seemed to have brought with him. "Very well, Mr. Bridgerton." She curtsied though their eyes seemed locked together. "And you, Sir?" There was no reason to be impolite, she told herself, he hadn't done anything so very offensive to her this morning. Mr Bridgerton's smile widened. "I'm very well." Silence seemed to stretch between them for a long moment as they stared at one another. Mr. Bridgerton seemed to shake himself. "Ah, Flowers for your Mother and Sister." He said, holding out two of the bouquets, roses she noticed. Beautiful ones at that. Kate took them when offered, admiring them before placing them on the side table. "My sister is out this afternoon, Mr. Bridgerton, so I'm rather afraid you've had a wasted journey. Mr. Berbrooke has called and taken her for a stroll in the park." Kate said dismissively. Mr. Bridgerton looked rather perplexed for a long moment. and then seemed to shake himself.

"And for you, Miss Sharma." He said, ignoring her statement in favour of brandishing the largest bouquet of tulips she'd ever seen at her, his eyes wide, his smile the brightest. And Kate's ridiculous heart fluttered again, butterflies beating their wings against her stomach. The flowers were beautiful, a stunning arrangement of red, and pink and yellow all mixed in together, even a man of Mr. Bridgerton's stature was practically buckling under the weight of them. And while her hands itched to reach out and touch them something in her refused to. "Do you not care for tulips?" Mr. Bridgerton asked, startling her again. His brow furrowed again. "Only, I thought I understood from my conversation with your sister last evening that you did."

And there it was. When Mr. Bridgerton had spoken with Edwina she didn't quite know, possibly when she'd been detained by the oddly attentive Duchess of Hastings, but he had. And in doing so he'd revealed his true motives. Ad despite knowing all along that this could have been his only real design, her heart sank.

"Mr. Bridgerton, after our discussion last night, you surely cannot imagine that I'd allow you to court my sister." Her voice rang through the drawing room towards him. Her most commanding tone that usually sent men running, and Mr. Bridgerton reacted most oddly. His brow furrowed momentarily, and then his eyes lit up, as though a candle had sparked behind them, his head thrown back in laughter that rang like a bell through the room, and Kate's heart leapt again. That same disarming smile on his face when he said "I should hope not, Miss Sharma, but would you allow me to court you?"

It was all Kate could do to prevent her mouth from dropping open, her heart fluttering though confusion welled up inside her. The bouquet still being held in no man's land between them, their eyes locked together in the same bizarre tension that had seemed to fill the room as they danced last night. And then she reached out and took them. "I'll consider it, Mr. Bridgerton." His laughter rang out again, "Well that's all a man can hope for, miss Sharma."

"Goodness, Kate, I've just seen the oddest occurrence in the hallway." Mary said as she breezed into the room breaking the tension. "I could swear I've just seen Newton flying up the stairs." Kate fought to roll her eyes at Mary's motherly smirk, her face brightening into a warm smile as she turned "Mr. Bridgerton, how lovely to see you again. Won't you take a seat?" Mr. Bridgerton smiled warmly at Mary as he settled himself on the sofa, Kate's mind struggling to catch up with the odd series of events. "Lady Sharma, nothing would give me more pleasure."

My absolute Favourite thing About The Bridgertons+ Kate dynamic is that their reaction to Kate and Anthony getting married is the Exact opposite to the Ton's.

I have questions obviously. Is Lucy Kate's sister in this AU? Michael as PRINCE. Anthony Bridgerton as a hot Viscount who saw the Princess out one night and at first it was kind of thrilling to flirt with her and buy her drinks and watch her get a little sloppy knowing that he would be a much better King and everyone knew she didn't want it anyway. She'd probably thank him. And then as the night wore on he couldn't help but feel more and more drawn to her, until their lips met in a heated kiss and when she looked up at him through her eyelashes and said Do you wanna get out of here? he'd nodded vigorously and led her out of the bar before he could think better of it. And when he'd looked down at the little Napkin, her phone number there in loopy, impressive handwriting Thanks for last night-Kate x and he'd entered it into his phone even though he knew, when he attended his meeting in parliament tomorrow, she'd never want to see him again. And he told himself it didn't matter, it didn't matter that he'd never felt anything close to this before how he'd never wanted her to stop moaning in his ear pulling him closer until he'd felt like she was imprinted on his skin. He had a duty to the country. We love to see that.

And we love HRH Michael Stirling, not technically in line for the throne now that his cousin John is married with a son, but he's a strong political tie and he'd make a good King consort. Unfortunately for him, his fiancée keeps disappearing on him and he finds himself more and more drawn to their wedding planner Francesca. We love that.

HRH Lucy Abernathy is the Princess of a neighbouring country and a close friend of Edwina and Kate. Who met a handsome stranger at the airport when she arrived for Kate's coronation lead up? Wonder who that was. But we love to see it.

Edwina, the Princess who's very motivated by her charities. And who met a really handsome, funny, charming doctor when she visited a children's hospital who treated her like a real person, not the princess. We love that.

And Matthew Goose Bagwell who had just arrived in the country last week who wanted to sink through the floor and die when his coworker muttered Very bold move to flirt with the princess. Because he had no idea that she was the princess visiting today. We love This too!
