I can feel Katya taking over my brain I fucking ADORE female characters who have sexy as an aspect of them but they’re also incredible nuanced and also violent and get to murder and be sapphic as a treat. God the duality of “I want nothing less than for my husband to love and fear respect me” and “if I can’t have him because he’s surrounded by boyfriends adversaries, I will fuck around with my own adversary instead (aka Sofia)” she’s like if the image that broke every Hayes Code rule was a real person!
Jfc she and Andrey really are two sides of the same coin, no wonder Goncharov feels haunted (by himself and because of what the audience knows before he does) he’s just so DOOMED like, surrounded on all sides by dangerous people, all of which could kill him but only one of them will. It’s so painfully inevitable and you know it like, the WHOLE time. Melting clock iconography indeed!
You keep guessing whose gonna kill him first. If it were Katya it’d be a crime of passion even tho whether she and her husband actually love each other is kinda up for grabs. If it was Andrey (it was!) it’s a crime of premeditation and calculation even though there’s some SERIOUS passion going on between the two of them gahhhh its so GOOD!! The love and violence and the significance of two cigarettes lit by the same flame is lhfslyrwkyrskyrs I AM INCOMPREHENSIBLE!!!

Honkcharov: A Goncharov Soulmate Goose AU
Are you obsessed with Goncharov? Are you desperately in need of 3000 words of pining and reasonably filthy porn with an undercurrent of humiliation kink? DO I HAVE THE FIC FOR YOU.
Presenting: Honkcharov, or, The Soft Animal of Your Body. It has everything!
The belfry scene
Andrey/Goncharov (I am a basic bitch and have basic bitch needs, which obviously includes Goncharov deepthroating Andrey)
A horrible goose appearing out of nowhere and derailing the bit where Andrey tries to shoot Goncharov for the first time
And then proceeds to noncon Goncharov into ✨ giving Andrey a blowjob ✨
Honkcharov, or, The Soft Animal of Your Body
Rating: Explicit Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Andrey/Goncharov, Background Andrey/Katya, Background Goncharov/Katya Characters: Andrey "The Banker" Daddano, Goncharov (Goncharov (1973)) Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - The Soulmate Goose of Enforcement, Plot What Plot/Porn Without Plot, First Time, Blow Jobs, Deepthroating, Face-Fucking, little a humiliation kink as a treat, Dubious Consent, the goose made them do it, nonconned by a goose, the goose ain’t worth the squeeze if the goose don’t look like this (like this like this like this), it’s a beautiful night in the belfry and you are a horrible goose, Canon-Typical Misogyny, Canon-Typical Homophobia, Goose-typical violence, no beta we die like ice pick joe Summary:
What if, instead of Andrey trying to shoot Goncharov during the belfry scene, a soulmate goose appears?
“Your belt,” croaks Goncharov, his voice rough from all the screaming and crying.
“What the fuck about my belt—argh, motherfucker—” The goose has Andrey’s hand in its beak and Andrey pulls free with way more effort that it should have taken. The streaks of blood look black in the moonlight. Geese are bad-tempered and strong, but this one…this one is fucked-up powerful, and Goncharov feels a genuine thrill of fear deep in his belly.
Goncharov clears his throat. “I think this thing wants your belt.”

all this discourse around goncharov (1973) with shippers obsessing over goncharov/andrey when katya/sofia is right there ignores the fact that andrey is shown to be racist and classist. remember when andrey makes a comment about the paper boy's ragged shoes and threadbare coat and associates it with his tan skin? are we just going to gloss over that? it's rather telling that fandom jumps on an opportunity to glorify a racist white man with a tragic backstory and ignores the female characters who are shoved to the side in the actual film, one of whom is coded to be italian (and italians were a persecuted group).

I am so glad that Tumblr has finally decided to stop sleeping on Goncharov (1973) because now I can FINALLY talk to someone about the homoerotic undertones of the scene where Andrei finds Katya’s glove on Goncharov’s desk. Like when I first saw that scene, I almost screamed. I know it’s suppose to represent Goncharov’s waning devotion to his profession and the slow decline of the Russian mob (because the implication is that he had sex with her on his desk, a blending of his work and personal life which he had once been so careful to keep separated), but having Andrei of all people find it? And the look on his face when he does? That combination of kicked-dog, resigned sadness and anger? That’s not a man annoyed with his boss for not focusing on the job, that’s a man who’s just had his heart broken!

I made a playlist for Goncharov (1973), because I just can't get enough of the love story between Andrey & Goncharov. Seriously, a love for the ages. When Andrey said "I wanted it to be you. I wanted it to be you so badly...It's Gonchin' time." I felt that in my bones.
Image for the playlist is by @elena-illustration.

Every once in a while Tumblr will pick up some dusty ass piece of media and scour it for homoeroticism. Last few months everyone's been going on about the "Dracula polycule" and now Goncharov of all fucking things is trending and everyone is going on about Katya/Sofia and Goncharov/Andrey as if Scorsese actually had the balls to portray queer relationships in 1973. You know he didn't, but tumblr is so blinded by shipping culture that they will intentionally ignore the actual canon. It's made explicitly clear that Andrey is in love with Katya. That's a major plot point throughout the whole damn movie. Are y'all are so starved for queer rep that you have to make gifs of all two times Katya and Sofia look at each other? There are literally hundreds of authors (many of who are queer themselves) writing better stories. You don't have to hurt yourselves stretching for a film made by the fucking pufferfish from Shark Tale

I'm sorry just!! The Othello parallels between Goncharov and Andrey! a man vulnerable because he feels he fundamentally doesn't belong (Othello as the Moor in Venice/Goncharov as the Eastern European trying to find his footing in the world of the Italian mafia), his naive, trusting lover who doesn't see beyond their love for the man (Desdemona eloping with Othello/Andrey staying with Goncharov when everyone else leaves his life), the man killing his lover in a fit of rage after being poisoned against them by a scheming admiral (Othello murdering Desdemona after Iago convinces him she's cheating on him with Cassio/Goncharov poisoning Andrey's wine after Mario convinces him he's sleeping with his wife, Katya). Like!!

never enough
M // Goncharov/Andrey
"I wish there was enough time." "There could never be," Goncharov assures him. "Not for you and I. Never enough." Andrey gives him a nod of finality. Then he tosses the blade aside, the wooden handle echoing as it bounces against the creaking floorboards. It won't stay there forever. Eventually, he will reach for it again; he will grasp it, and plunge it into his chest. End it. Goncharov won't stop him. Although that moment - however near - is the future. It's not the present. In the present, there is no blade, and no violence, and no death. In the present, there is only safe, wandering hands, gently undoing the buttons of his vest; tugging at his tie, opening his shirt - until it can all be shed, and dropped to the floor.
