To fly is wonderful, even in the lumbering Tiger Moths at Oxford, seeing the verdant green, then the ripples of autumn across wood and hedges. Leave everything behind; tutorials, essays, the ghost of war in the dull autumn in 1939. All that, or almost all is away when he's in the air. And then to Scotland, the great fifths and sea and rougher, less steady fields. The Lizzys aren't cracking fast, but they're handy. To bump down in a patch and then scurry up again, with what might be the dash of an old-time highwayman, gone almost before he was known, and skimming the hedges like a fleeing pheasant, except a little neater. (And he will come to be even more glad of the subtle fleetness in later years, and scratch airfields).
Oh but the Spitfire. It knows his thoughts, it knows his very hearts wish before he thinks it. Is this is what it is to have wings? Is this what it is to be a bird, a sweeping gliding gull on the sea air...no a stooping, sporting hawk? Whatever he wants it does, only nudging a little, to remind you that a turn chokes it on the wings, but before any crisis is reached. A plane with a life and a heart of its own

Hastings, September 1945
(By way of explanation, last month I went to a concert that included an excerpt from Béla Bartók's Duke Bluebeard's Castle. This is an opera that really suits the present pop-cultural moment: as you can undoubtedly guess, it's a horror story, and just think of all the horror films that are being produced these days! I can't find a linkable video that I can really endorse, so if you can look into it yourselves if you care to. The point, however, is that the following has been knocking around in my mind ever since then.)
‘Sam,’ Andrew begins. She looks up. ‘There’s something that I’ve been wanting to say. It’s a bit awkward, though,’ he adds.
‘Yes? Do go on, please.’
‘Well... what I want to tell you is that this is your home now, at least for the time being, and that I want you to, um, to feel that way.’
‘Oh, Andrew, I do!’ Sam exclaims.
‘The trouble is,’ Andrew continues, ‘it can’t really be that way, because after all it’s Dad’s house, so if you wanted to... I don’t know, replace the wallpaper... well, I don’t think... ’
He trails off into silence.
‘I do feel quite at home here, Andrew,’ Sam assures him, ‘and I wouldn’t want to change a thing.’
‘All right.’
‘Actually, though, there’s something that I’ve been meaning to ask — about the house, I mean.’
‘Oh — yes?’
‘I ought to have asked your father before he left, but it slipped my mind,’ Sam goes on. ‘You’d be quite likely to know as well, though, I would imagine.’
‘Yes? What is it?’
‘It’s just... what’s in the second storey?’
Andrew’s face changes — closes rather, Sam thinks.
‘The attic,’ he replies.
Sam has the distinct feeling that she’s not meant to pursue this subject any farther.
‘Yes, I’d rather assumed that much,’ she tells him. ‘But what’s in the attic? The door’s locked,’ she adds.
Andrew pauses for a brief moment before he says anything more, glancing down at the table and looking, Sam thinks, as though he were deciding what, if anything, to tell her.
‘You must never, ever go up there, Sam,’ he announces solemnly. He looks at her intently now, his face as somber as his voice. ‘I tell you this because I love you and I want to protect you.’
It occurs to Sam to laugh, but also that, were she to do so now, it would likely be a nervous laugh. But then she sees that Andrew’s eyes are sparkling, and when she does begin laughing she doesn’t feel nervous at all.
‘My mother kept her painting studio up there,’ Andrew explains. He’s not quite merry, but he is smiling, and the solemnity is gone. ‘All of her supplies are still there — Dad never got rid of any of them. A few dozen paintings, as well, that she never sold or gave to anyone. They’re not even mounted. We can go have a look if you like. I’m surprised Dad locked the door, but the key’s in my desk.’

For the fluff asks, might I respectfully request "I’m lost.” for Foyle & Andrew?
“I’m lost,” Andrew repeated. He’d said it first when he’d rung, the call itself a rare enough event Foyle had known to pay close attention to not only his son’s words but the pauses between them, the subtle alterations in tone, the kind of observation he generally reserved for a suspect who was close to a confession. When Foyle had offered to come round and try to help, the alacrity with which Andrew accepted was both alarming and a relief; it had been years since Andrew had asked for any assistance, let alone welcomed it.
“Tell me again what you’ve done,” Foyle said, hanging up his coat on a peg by the door. It was a short walk to the kitchenette, the flat Andrew shared with Sam close quarters, even by the standard of an effusive estate agent. Andrew squinted down at the French cookery book splayed open on the scrubbed oak table like a corpse to be autopsied and then looked back at his father and shrugged.
“I wanted to surprise Sam with a nice dinner when she comes back from her parents and you know the university doesn’t pay much, so I thought I could make something, one of Mum’s favorite recipes, but it’s all gone horribly wrong and all I want right now is a whiskey,” Andrew said. Foyle took in the indeterminant color of the smear on Andrew’s shirt and the furrow in his brow, the early grey at his son’s temples, the similar limpness of his collar and the dishtowel he’d slung over his shoulder in lieu of Sam’s capacious pinafore. It wasn’t the time to offer money, though he suspected Sam would be delighted with fish and chips or a meat pie at the local pub, the treat the company and not having to face the washing up.
“Do you have a good bottle of red?” Foyle asked.
“I said whiskey, dad.”
“I meant for the meal,” Foyle said. “And some onions?”
“There’s some wine, but the recipe doesn’t call for either of those,” Andrew said. “It goes on and on about folding in, but I haven’t the foggiest clue what that means.”
“She’s been a fortnight at her father’s vicarage, Andrew, eating creamed swedes and rissoles. Being served her Uncle Aubrey’s homemade wine. Sauté some onions in butter, brown the chicken, and be liberal with the Burgundy,” Foyle said. “She’ll say it’s the best coq au vin she’s ever eaten. She won’t even miss the garlic.”

'Where to start when profiling such a talented and charismatic actor as Andrew Scott? How about the fact that, aside from some youth theater workshop experience, this Dublin-born actor has had no official drama training? At 17, he was cast in a substantial role in an Irish film called Korea and, from there, joined the prestigious Abbey Theatre company in Dublin. His move to England in the late 80s corresponded with small parts in British, Irish, and American films and TV series and paved the way for his career to take off.
Among other projects, Andrew Scott appeared as an extra in Saving Private Ryan's Omaha Beach sequence, as well as several guest starring roles in British TV series like Garrow's Law and Foyle's War. All in all, he spent the first decade or so of his career building a solid body of work that would soon catapult him into pop culture stardom.
Let's take a look at some of Mr. Scott's iconic characters and lesser-known projects.
Sherlock (2010 – 2017)
Who can forget when Sherlock first revealed the character of Jim Moriarty to audiences in "The Great Game" episode? Scott played Mr. Holmes's famous nemesis as a deranged mastermind with a playful sing-song creepiness and a palpable presence of malice. He won the Best Supporting Actor TV BAFTA for that role in 2012.
The Bachelor Weekend aka The Stag (2013)
Some may have missed the delightful indie comedy, The Stag, about a group of friends who set out on a hiking excursion in the Irish countryside. Mr. Scott leads the ensemble as Davin, the groom's best man, in charge of their mild-mannered weekend. Their plans are wholly upended when The Machine (Peter McDonald), the bride's laddish brother, crashes the party. Lest you expect an Irish Hangover clone, emotional confrontations ensue between Davin and our groom, Fionnan (Hugh O'Conor), when unresolved issues from their past rise to the surface.
Pride (2014)
The feel-good, historical dramedy Pride depicts a group of London-based lesbian and gay activists who raised money to help families affected by the Welsh miners' strike in 1984. Scott plays Gethin, owner of a gay bookshop, who lends support to the group but hesitates to get actively involved due to his experiences as a gay youth coming out in Wales. He earned the best supporting actor trophy for his performance from the British Independent Film Awards.
Spectre (2015)
Once an actor is lauded for playing a baddie well, you have to expect the 007 franchise will come calling. In the 24th Bond film Spectre, Scott played Max Denbigh, aka C, Director-General of the Joint Security Service, an organization created by merging MI5 and MI6. While at first his disagreements with M (Ralph Fiennes) seem to be internal power struggles, it turns out C is a danger to democracy worldwide.
This Beautiful Fantastic (2016)
This Beautiful Fantastic is a quirky fairytale for adults and tells the story of Bella (Jessica Brown Findlay), a young woman who aspires to be a children's author but lacks the skills to navigate her out-of-control garden, let alone her nebulous career. Befriended by a kindly chef/housekeeper named Vernon (Scott), Bella begins to conquer her issues and blossom into the person she wishes to become. The film also stars Tom Wilkinson as Bella's gardening mentor.
Denial (2016)
A biographical legal drama, Denial depicts the libel case brought against American professor Deborah Lipstadt (Rachel Weisz) by Holocaust denier David Irving (Timothy Spall). Mr. Scott plays Anthony Julius, the lead solicitor of Deborah's legal team, who guides her through the UK justice system and their arduous path to obtaining justice.
1917 (2019)
In the innovative war drama 1917 (which starred a who's who of British talent), two English soldiers run a harrowing gauntlet through enemy territory to deliver a message that could save the lives of over 1500 troops. Along the way, the young men meet up with a handful of officers who help them on their journey, all played by respected British actors, including Messrs. Cumberbatch, Firth, Strong, and you guessed it – Scott. His portrayal of Lieutenant Leslie stands out a mile for its humor and hopelessness.
Present Laughing (2019)
Mr. Scott garnered theatrical acclaim for his performance as Garry Essendine in Present Laughing, a semi-autobiographical piece by Noel Coward performed at the Old Vic. Farcical in tone, the play depicts the harried life of a successful and self-obsessed light comedy actor facing an impending mid-life crisis. Andrew won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Play.
Fleabag (2019)
Andrew Scott's name may have been synonymous with Moriarty until the world witnessed his portrayal of a character known only as "Hot Priest" in Fleabag. In the second season of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's award-winning dark comedy, Scott was introduced as the cleric who would be marrying Fleabag's dad and his fiancé. The couple has an immediate connection at the dinner table, and a trinity of friendship, spirituality and physical attraction ignite throughout the six-episode season. Scott's contribution was perfection!
This is only a brief sampling of Andrew Scott's work and impressive range...'

Campus idea - anyone from the Foyle'verse?
I have cogitated on this. I think I've tried to do it before, perhaps at @kivrin's kind suggestion. But here is the insight I have now had, which I think makes it work better than on my previous attempt.
Sam and Paul have to be Foyle's PhD students. If we are keeping a relationship with both a firm hierarchy and (de facto) intense intimacy, that's it. Foyle, of course, is in history; this is based on his own canonical interest in local history and archaeology, not just the fact that it's my subject and so I know the ways in which we get weird.
Sam's love affair with food is restricted, not by rationing, but by a grad student's budget. Truly Sam and scones are star-crossed. V sad. I will find a way for Paul to get her a giant onion, so help me.
Andrew I will skip straight ahead to his postwar finance bro phase. Sorry/not sorry, Andrew. But I still believe that he has a Heart of Gold! and potential! after all, he plays chess with his dad, and perceives the worth of Sam, whom he meets when he pops by the department to take Foyle out to lunch.
"Sir," says Sam (he's tried to train her out of it; it hasn't worked), "do you know that your son is, well, wining and dining me?"
"What?" says Foyle, and then, belatedly: "Do you want me to have a word?" and then Sam blushes and he realizes that he has a different sort of problem on his hands.
Paul didn't take up his offer of a place in the PhD program the first time around. Like his father before him, he went into the army, which offered clearly defined possibilities for advancement and a generous pension. In both of which things it is distinctly unlike an advanced degree in history (for God's sake, Jane always added.) But it is as easy to be maimed in an unjust war as in one proclaimed as just. And Paul, with a prosthetic and a pending divorce, applies again. He sends Foyle a brief email in which he attempts, badly, to explain.
So here Paul is, alongside Sam with all her golden enthusiasm for the big city which her parents view as both mysterious and dangerous, and Foyle, who doesn't usually get sentimental about his students, finds himself with these two.
...This of course leaves open questions about the rest of the department, and it occurred to me over the second mug of tea that, of course, perhaps the one group as irascibly individualistic and idiosyncratically generous and defiantly optimistic about their capabilities of making things marginally better in a fallen world as academics are, in fact, fictional British detectives.

Phrack Pirate AU
so I'm a huge fan of taking phrases in Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries literally (e.g. "you are fox spirit", "there's something wild about you, child") so I'd have loved to make the Pirate Girls of Collingwood a thing, but it's hard for me to reconcile the show's tone and dynamics with historical context here. BUT! this is an ask game, so I needn't do that. So: instead of going to England to become an 18th-century Lady, Phryne runs away to sea. It starts off as a quest to avenge Janey's murder at the hands of notorious pirate Murdoch Foyle and evolves into her commanding her own ship ("the Silver Lady") and robbing wealthy merchantmen on the high seas (she continues to go about in disguise in high society so she can get hold of shipping schedules and plot her raids). Mr Butler is her quartermaster. Mac is the ship's doctor, because it's the only place where she can practise medicine without stigma. Cec and Bert were poached from whalers, Bert because of the better remuneration, Cec because whaling really was not for him. Dot was being transported for murdering John Andrews (most historical Australian pirates were escaped convicts) before Phryne and crew snaffle her. She's not actually any good at piracy but she keeps the Silver Lady ship-shape. Jane just stows away on board and never leaves. Jack is the unfortunate naval officer tasked with bringing the Dread Pirate Fisher to justice, but she always escapes him at the last minute, and he's beginning to wonder if he really wants to bring her in (his subordinate Hugh gets kidnapped by the Fisher crew at one point and somehow completely suborned, to Jack's chagrin). There's a lot of erotic swordfighting. It'll probably end with Phryne killing Foyle but getting captured as a result and sent to face the King's justice but Jack has a last-minute change of heart, rescues her from the gallows and they sail off into the sunset to, I guess, commit more piracy. Someone else can write this
Leave an AU and a pairing in my ask and I’ll give you the plot of the fic I won’t write for it.

It's strange, to be up in the air, cutting through the clouds into clearer air above them. He'd always watched the gulls, their wings crescent-curved sweeping around on the sea breezes, like kites but with their own will.
And now here he is, the unexpected chill of the air lashing his cheeks across the open cockpit, and nibbling even through the thicker layers the UAS officers had instructed he wear. Is this what it is like to be a bird, then? Wrapped in the air, bound to nothing, only freedom.
The frame rattles...well nearly freedom, the biplane wings at the corner of his eyes aren't quite as elegant as the long feathered wings of the birds.
But no, this is still wonderful and this, surely is only the start

He always wondered how Rose did it. (FW if possible please)
He always wondered how Rose did it. There was something about her, ever since she’d been placed in his arms swaddled in a cashmere shawl that had reportedly belonged to Sam’s grandmother, that had made him hers. He loved the boys, Anthony with Rosalind’s eyes, Michael nine-tenths Sam’s mischief, but neither one of them had stolen his heart in the same way. He couldn’t say it was that she reminded him of someone dear, though she might grow to do so, nor that it had a long time since there had been a baby, Michael only beginning to stagger around, nappies still draped haphazardly on the line in the small garden. Perhaps it was the way Andrew had said her name and the gentleness in his finger as he stroked her plump cheek, perhaps something else.
It was a mystery and Christopher Foyle couldn’t say he minded that it remained unsolved.

Five Things You Might Find In My Fics
tagged by @jomiddlemarch - thank you!
1. A deep dive into a small gap in canon. (How did Giles acquire the Prokaryote stone? How did Sam hide Andrew when he was AWOL?)
2. Apologies for canon wrongs. (Angel to Wesley; Foyle to Milner and vice-versa; Giles to Buffy)
3. Backstory (How did everyone end up at Bletchley?)
4. Historical or cultural detail, especially food (and tea. So much tea.)
5. Characters asking for and/or accepting help.
Inviting anyone who wants to play!

Note
Fic title "Stolen Dreams"
Foyle's War -
He was just alive on Tuesday - had plans to see his son, celebrate the baby that was on the way. A wife has come to collect her husband's belongings from the airbase, and Andrew is considering what makes a future certain.
[made up fic titles askbox meme!]
