an episode that’s just crowley and aziraphale waking up to find the bookshop trashed but they were both black out drunk the night before so they have to work it out via arguing and disjointed flashback sequences what exactly happened

S5E8 "The Roast" thoughts:
Tumblr media
Ok, I watched this episode three times and I'm still smiling. I love when you think and episode is gonna be about something because of its title and then surprise you when its all a misdirection (see also: Succession's "Connor's Wedding").
At first Laszlo's err… state intrigued me, love everyone projecting and imposing their own insecurities (Guillermo's secret, Nadja's hex) as a reason on why he is behaving like that. And of course it's a stupid reason 😭.
"And a flat pepsi for Guillermo". Oh Nandor, that's the worst thing you ever done to Guillermo, that's the worst thing you could do to anyone. And yes, I remember a certain S4 episode.
I screeched like a bird when Colin mentioned dreaming about being a baby under Laszlo's care, not only because I wanted this shit to happen since the past finale, but also I really thought the episode was going on that direction (and also bc its another W for my predictions).
Having said that, LOVED the nonchalance of Nadja and the others when they were like 'no, it wasn't a dream, that totally happened'.
I mentioned it in a separate post: they really had a Sweet Dee in IASIP moment when The Guide gave the roast idea, only to be ignored and then the same idea being stolen by a dude who is celebrated.
Seanie's poor brain it should be soup at this point, we don't know if he can hazily remember the event like it happened before.
What can I remember is his line after Nadja's roast because it was one of the biggest laughs for me: "Women CAN be funny!" I fucking loved it so much, it's the perfect condescending shit straight men say all the time, even when they're trying to be complementary to you they can't stop being garbage. It was a simple line but Anthony nailed the delivery and timing. Seriously, rewatch that part.
At first I was confused why all the jokes were so mid, but shortly I realized this episode wasn't about the roast at all, lol.
Just by watching screenshots of other users I noticed that in the scene of Nandor resting his head on Guillermo's shoulder there's a BIG flame between them. LMAO. There's no way that is unintentional.
Good for The Guide being the catalyst of Baron Afanas learning the truth. I was demanding more screen time for her lately, so having some incidence in the main plot goes on the plus column.
The other guests present at the roast being shocked at the knowledge of Guillermo killing vampires surprised me; I always assumed Guillermo being a familiar/slayer was a known fact in the vampire community after his very public massacre at the Théâtre des Vampires.
Fuck yeah when I realized this is a Doug Jones spotlight episode, I just fuckin ahgdjkaksdf, love him, perfect, no notes.
The Baron being terrifying!! Guillermo was seriously scared for the others and he barely tried to show off his Van Helsing abilities.
Nandor and Nadja begging the Baron to not hurt Guillermo!! 😭 Them being dragged while grabbing the cape!! 😭 They're spiritual siblings to me!! 😭😭
They really reminded me a little bro and sis begging their mom to not hit their beloved older brother with the chancla for talking back or something.
I fell for the two fake-outs with the sack lol I'm so gullible when it comes to vampires I guess.
NANDOR PAINFUL SOUNDS (MOANS???) WHEN HE BELIEVED HE WAS IN FRONT OF GUILLERMO'S INERT BODY. IT WAS SAD BUT ALSO A LITTLE HORNY!!!
"At least he died doing what he loved: beating off in the toolshed."
A wonderful small detail: After Laszlo opened fake Guillermo with the knife he cleaned his hands on The Guide's dress.
Idc if you think its dark, the whole 'Nandor will kill you and then kill himself' bit becoming a recurring joke it's peak writing.
I wish I can say something more serious about Baron Afanas' sadness over how boring his life is now. But I just keep thinking that the way he talks about his homelife with The Sire and the Hellhound sounds exactly when a dude has a middle life crisis and suddenly he doesn't enjoy his marriage anymore. They're husbands!! And I loved how cunty he looked at the end all half-charred (see posted gif) Queen!
Now, the Nandermo of it all: What more can I say than incoherent screaming and foaming from the mouth? Episodes 8 are all about them again!! Nandor on the window looking all cliched melancholic heroine of a romance novel?? How relieved he was when he found him in the coffin??? Him still remembering Guillermo's card word for word???!! Knowing that this toxic dark sided devotion goes both ways???!!! Borrowing the words of Fleabag: THIS IS A LOVE STORY.
Seriously, I know all these soft Nandor moments are here so the heartbreak when he learns about Guillermo being turned it's even bigger. But still denying that there is a romantic undertone between these two it's just being purposely adamant at this point (i'm looking at you wwdits reddit). Even if nothing explicitly romantic happens on screen, just by watching these moments, I know, we know.
Now, go listen to the ending song again. You will not regret it.

that episode kinda sucked. the metaphors were surface level and Dennis’ character felt reduced and 2D. the “it was all a dream” plot felt cheap. it was cool looking at how his mind works, but it added nothing to the plot, didn’t help build up to something like the extra room, the furniture, Johnny, etc. It felt overhyped, not by the fandom bc we had hope, but by some of the people working on it. It was shot beautifully, but iasip FEELS like iasip with shaky handheld cameras and simple shots. in the gang carries a corpse and mac finds his pride, they both had beautiful cinematography bc they wanted to show something big. this episode felt like it lacked substance and didn’t even help develop Dennis’ character. It possibly even worsened it. Idk it felt very disappointing especially compared to the other episodes AND the other season finales. it it were switched with say Frank Vs Russia or The Gang Goes Bowling, it would of been received better. It also showed no relationships- the gang did nothing in this episode. I know its Dennis centric, but damn they had like two to three phone calls (fake ones that were in his head) and that was it. It did show that Dennis sees the gang as a stressor and that they rely on him too much, and possibly don’t help him back. but yeah, thats my thoughts. it had potential but it was just kinda done wrong. felt too much like a drawn out gag.

i am genuinely so in awe of the fact that the most grounded and real episode of iasip was all based on dennis’ delusions! i love that! and i’m also unwell!
yes yes yes yes its like,,,dennis‘ frustrations were very tangible and understandable imo. like yeah. it was exaggerated in a sunny way but it was still just a guy slowly being driven to desperation by systems he doesnt completely understand and cant control which is. very relatable i think. like yeah thats kinda the world we are living in. im a huge fan of dennis reynolds killing capitalism <3 (tho ofc for him it was a lot more than that)
and like idk if i would call them delusions neccessarily (tho i get what ur saying anon) because they did serve their purpose. they were very controlled. and its like. the implication (joke not intended) that dennis has done this before and its just a way of dealing with his emotions? that this is the fantasy he contructs where he can be a little bit gentler and show vulnerability and call for help (he doesnt get because the gang think hes testing him haha bashing my head against the wall)?? it makes me insane. the episode makes me insane.
the fact that they ended it with dennis ripping out someones heart and it turning into a diamond while listen to your heart plays and its just a genuinely well constructed scene that makes sense and its not just random things thrown in for jokes????? the fact that the scene happens and because of how the episode and dennis‘ character is constructed it makes sense in all of its objective ridiculousness….it makes me insane. u and me both anon. u and me both

top five SHOWS.
the walking dead - ................. like it has to be said. i'm so sorry. it didn't even really go 'bad' for me like it did lose me for a hot minute or two there originally but like. when i rewatched i was like no actually i love it here. i love this hot mess. and i tragically fucking do. could really do with bringing certain characters back etc or just dissappearing some storylines but like. i do fucking love it.
breaking bad - i didnt even KNOW what i was in for i was just like this'll be fine this'll be chill. and then my life changed forever y'know.
it's always sunny in philadelphia - my go-to show to have on in the background, to have on when im sick, to have on when i need a laugh, to have on when im feeling miserable, to have on when i just wanna feel like Myself. can probably quote like. every episode by this point.
black sails - literally don't even need to explain this one. bs is already tumblr critically acclaimed. if i could go back in time and watch the season two last two episodes for the first time all over again, i would in a heartbeat. the girl that existed in my bedroom when watching those eps? never seen her before and i'll never be her again.

lets revisit black sails again and say season two finale as a whole? but also the 'in the light there is discovery' forest speech in the series finale............................i get chills like every time. WAIT ALSO 'my name is John Silver. and i've got a Long Fucking Memory.' INSANE acting also idk if this is really technically 'top five scenes' worthy but uknow that line where flints like 'where else would you wake up in the morning and matter?' @ silver??? yeah it ingrained itself into my brain and now whenever my brains having a bad day and being a bitch, it just repeats that line over and over to myself. again i dont know if that makes it a top five thing but boy oh bOY it sure made an impact !
iasip mac finds his pride when mac does the dance and franks crying and is like 'i get it. i get it now.' maybe its cos i feel like there is just a 00.01% chance of my parents ever accepting me and im projecting or whatever but that scene? every fucking time im like........ crying lol
my brain is one big jumble for the walking dead and i just can't pin down one scene? so i'm just gonna take a cop out and say that part where daryl and merle are in the woods huntin when they split off in s3 or whatever after they reunite and daryls got his crossbow simply becos i still remember watching it with my mum and her being like 'oh look at daryls Arms. he's really got Muscles.' and i was like. scandalised. in a Good way. and now everytime i see him in that scene i'm like justin beiber tweet i love Arm.
that scene in breaking bad where jesses in hospital after hank beats the shit outta him in the rv and walt visits him in hospital and jesse has that breakdown in 3.07? jesse pinkman crying in a hospital bed bruised and beaten saying 'i am not turning down the money, i am turning down you.' when he's yelling 'i have NOTHING. NO ONE.' ??????????????? scene of all scenes. wait also the peek-a-boo kid scene in s2
stuggling to think of a last one uh maybe in the seventh fast and furious movie when see you again plays at the end and they're all on the beach and then dom and brian are racing except you know its not paul walker and u know its CGI or whatever and ???? i still cry over that sorry

all of ‘em for the rnm ask meme 🤭❤️
Yessss!!! Link to the original in case anyone else wants to reblog/play.
Who is your favourite Rick and Morty Character? This is like asking my favorite It's Always Sunny character... because I love them all for their terribleness. Probably Rick, though Rick wouldn't be nearly as compelling without Morty. Favorite side character would be Squanchyyyyy or Mr. Nimbus.
Which Beth is the clone: Domestic Beth or Space Beth? As a mom, I want to say Domestic Beth is the real one because a parent wouldn't leave their kids... except this is Beth Smith we're talking about, so I think Domestic Beth is the clone. I think our "scared little overachiever" pursued freedom when she knew her family had a fallback.
Do you think that Rick-C137 and Rick Prime were previously romantically involved? "Infinite shit happens." Yes, absolutely.
What do you think would be a good name for Birdperson and Tammy's daughter? Phoenixperson II aka PP aka Peepa (terrible The Office reference).
How many seasons do you think Rick and Morty will eventually have? No clue but I'm here for alllll of them.
Rick C-137: smash or pass? Smash.
Who is your favourite Rick and Morty villain? Evil Morty. I love that manipulative little asshole who found a way out.
Your favourite Rick and Morty episode? How do you pick just one ;_; For Rick's character development, I'd say Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort. Seeing Rick deal with his feelings for others always hits me hard because he spends so much time denying those feelings. For fun, I'd go with Mort Dinner Rick Andre because I love Mr. Nimbus and I also love seeing Jessica become more than just Morty's obsession.
Your least favourite Rick and Morty episode? One Crew over the Crewcoo's Morty (the popular choice seems to be Claw and Hoarder: Special Ricktim's Morty but I love the slut dragons--currently fostering four cats for a friend while said friend is moving, the youngest is female and going through her first heat, and I will randomly mimic the wizard when she's yowling: "You slut! Shame on you! Shame, you slut! You slutty, slutty slut!" I am giving her lots of lovings and she has a heating pad, though, so she's okay).
Who is your least favourite Rick and Morty character? Beth and Jerry without character development (pre-separation).
What is, in your opinion, the worst thing that Rick C-137 has ever done? Real answer: use his grandson the way he does (codependent, grooming, the list goes on and on). Fan answer: torn between taking Morty's memories and the "save a point in time device" from Vat of Acid.
Do you think that Rick and Morty will be affected substantially by having to change the voice actor for Rick and Morty and a bunch of other characters? Affected, yes. Substantially... I don't know but I'll give anything a shot, especially since Adult Swim did the right thing dropping JR. The cool thing about the show is that there are infinite (heh) ways they can address this, if they choose to address it at all, so I'm excited to see what happens next.
What's a good Rick and Morty blog? All the Rick and Morty peeps I follow are awesome! I hesitate to recommend anyone I don't interact with because DNIs pop up all the time based on stuff I saved in my drafts and later go to queue and have to delete because they have some hateful anti/TERF rhetoric going on, so check out my reblogs and likes to find my favorites. :D
Who is the Rick and Morty character that you relate to the most? This ties back in with IASIP. I don't really relate to any of them, I just enjoy them and their fucked up relationships and situations.
The funniest Rick and Morty bit/scene, in your opinion? This is the one that hooked me on the show, the moment I knew I was a goner for these assholes: Butter robot: What is my purpose? Rick: Pass the butter. (Butter robot passes butter) Rick: Thank you. […] Butter robot: What is my purpose? Rick: You pass butter. Butter robot: [looks at its hands] Oh my god. Rick: Yeah, welcome to the club, pal.
Best Rick and Morty season? My favorite so far has been season 6 (they did such a good job with character development, including Rick backsliding into his obsession with Prime--just chef's kiss).
Worst Rick and Morty season? I've enjoyed all of them so far for different reasons. Much like some of my other favorites (The Office, IASIP), I would say push through season 1 if you're unsure and wait until you get through season 2 before you make a decision about the show.
Would you stop watching the show if Justin Roiland returned? I don't know. Depends on whether a public statement was involved and how much responsibility he took for his actions (versus playing it off). I can't listen to Marilyn Manson anymore (because Brian Warner is an abusive POS) and that band was formative during my middle + high school years (almost as important to me as NIN and I would mourn that loss if Trent Reznor turned out to be trash). Roiland coming back might ruin the show for me.
Your favourite Rick and Morty quote? Hard to pick but right now it would be: "Nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, everybody's gonna die. Come watch TV." This gets me right in the feels because it's true. Life is short, probably meaningless, so might as well enjoy while we're here and have a chance... because this all ends.
If you had to be one member of the Smith family in the next season, who would you want to be? Ooo, I'd want to be Space Beth.

Yes, 100% about wishing iasip wasn't still ongoing. As much as I love the characters and I hope that one day I can enjoy it again like I did before, I just don't really like the show anymore. Even the newest season which so many people say they loved and thought it was really good, I thought it was okay. It had some older season flavor and I generally liked the episodes more than the past few seasons, but overall it was still just okay to me. Over time, it lost something made me really, really enjoy the show and idk if it can ever get it back
yeah this is exactly how i feel!! i liked the newer season but its just Not the same to me. i used to be so obsessed w this show and be able to watch the entire thing in a weekend and i do not get the same feeling from any of the new seasons and its made me lose that feeling for the older seasons too so im taking a break from watching it :(. i am just hoping we get some kind of ending that makes it all worth it

i saw your tags on the IASIP mac and dennis post and I hope you give the show a shot bc it is just absolutely bonkers. bad people doing bad things that lead to bad consequences but its just batshit the whole time so you dont feel bad for any characters ever lol
pick a random later season like 8 or 9 or whatevs, random episode, and just roll w it (there are continuous throughlines but its episodic so it doesnt matter where you start so long as you're looking for a good time)
Hhhhh I've been wanting to give it a try for ages but like. The thing is. I need there to be Love in it. I can handle any level of people being mean to each other if it is occasionally clear that actually they love each other and are hanging out on purpose, they're just garbage people and don't always remember/know that they love each other. Comedies where literally no one likes anyone else kind of just Make Me Sad lol
...though actually, thinking about it, it might be that the thing that bothers me is inconsistency? Like the main show I'm thinking of is Community, where it's like... in some episodes it seems like the group is basically good and they sometimes understand that Other People Are People Too, and then in some episodes it's like 'oh yeah no these people are assholes and everyone hates them' which feels. Bad.
Anyway I guess I'll give always sunny a try, it's possible a show where they are Just Bad All The Time would be fine for me actually lmao

Here are some shows I recommend to everyone!!! I just want the chance to gush about my favorite shows and if this convinces you to watch any of them, then I will consider my life’s mission complete and I will die peacefully 💕 (these are in no particular order btw)
1. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
- I love this show. I love it so much. The first show to ever make me laugh OUT LOUD in my empty home while watching, like a full on belly-laugh even with no one else around. I got my roommate/bestie/partner to like this show, and now our dorm room is covered in iasip stuff. It’s half satire and half pure comedy, with some really dynamic and funny characters and a super simple premise (5 people own a bar. They get up to shenanigans around Philly. They are also the most terrible people on the planet and have no regard for others.) I know a lot of people hate the first season (probably for good reason, the political satire didn’t click very well from the get-go and its… difficult… to sit through some scenes) but I still enjoy it purely for how funny the characters are despite being awful people. Notable episodes are The Nightman Cometh (4x13), The Gang Solves the Gas Crisis (4x2), A Very Sunny Christmas (6x13), and The Gang Dances Their Asses Off (3x15).
2. Barry
- this is the most recent show that I finished all the way through, and I have to say, it’s really that good. Bill Hader is a really amazing actor — I had only seen him on SNL before this, and I had no idea he could display such a perfectly horrifying range of emotions. It starts a little slow; the first couple of episodes are good, not outstanding, but then it really picks up and creates a super strange, almost surreal atmosphere of tension/emotion/drama. Basically, the premise is that a professional hit man realizes his true passion is acting, but can’t seem to shake his past and move forward with his plan of redemption. A super great show. Honestly I can’t pick a single episode or two that are my favorite, but Ronny/Lily from season 2 was nominated for an Emmy I think, so check that one out :) this show is also very very violent so just giving you a warning now lol
3. Arrested Development
- this show is so good??? what???? honestly I never watched the last two seasons (I tried — I failed), but the third season ends the show perfectly, you don’t have to watch after that if it’s not holding your attention like it didn’t hold mine. I don’t even know how to describe how well this show (especially the first season, which is the best first season of almost any show I’ve seen) interconnects all these crazy jokes, plot lines, and characters so effortlessly. It’s fucking insane. I think (?) Drew Gooden made a video about how AD was ahead of its time, go check that out if you’re interested in hearing more about the humor style bc it’s really hard to explain. The premise is that a super rich family ends up losing their money when the patriarch is sent to jail for fraud (??) and hijinks ensue. Best episodes are Bringing Up Buster (1x3), Pier Pressure (1x10), and Let ‘Em Eat Cake (1x22).
4. What We Do In The Shadows
- vampires who live in Staten Island with their human familiar, what could be better than that?? I am not going to sit here and say that this show is amazing or perfectly written — it’s not, but something about the passion that the actors put into their roles, how they absolutely fully commit to the goofiness, is super endearing and hooked me from the beginning. It’s campy and fun with a dark sense of humor, and really sells its concept well. Vampires!!! Blood!!! Homosexuals???? The Casino (3x4) is a standout episode to me, but most of the episodes are about the same quality in my mind.
5. Succession
- yeah this show deserves all the fucking awards. It’s so good. I almost never choose to watch dramas, but I was promised gay people, and while that kind of didn’t shape out, the rest of the story is just amazing. I’m sure you guys have heard people rave about this show, and you should listen to them, because they are fucking right!!!! On the outside, it looks like a bland, colorless business drama, but once you dive into it (the first half of season one is kind of a slog), there is so much pain, love, redemption, loss, and beauty hidden under the layers of the show (and this reflects the characters too — stale from the outside, but much deeper and intriguing on the inside). The writing is spectacular. The jokes are actually funny?? The camera work and acting is incredible (seriously, props to Jeremy Strong for making me have overwhelming levels of empathy for his shitty, horrible character. Also, all the other actors and actresses are amazing, I can’t think of a single one who put in less than 110% into their role). Just go watch it. All the episodes are good, but the beginning episode of season 3 is such a strangely compelling and relatable character journey for Kendall, I felt way too many emotions in one sitting.
6. Stranger Things (Season 1)
- I am currently at the end of season 2, and while I still really enjoy it, I don’t think there has ever been a more cohesive and enjoyable first season of a show than Stranger Things. Like.. when people were hyped about this… it was deserved. I only recently got around to it, but yeah, it’s just as awesome as people say it is. The horror elements are really well done (I normally hate gore and horror and scary stuff, but I found myself not even shying away or being grossed out, it just fits so perfectly into the story that it wasn’t off putting to me at all), and the characters are so dynamic and realistic and interesting that I felt myself so incredibly compelled to watch the next episodes just to see what the characters did next!! I’m trying to think of characters that I disliked from the first season, and I genuinely can not think of any (Steve is a little flat, but he’s not super important this season so I forgive him). The plot is so unsettling and creepy, I was sitting on the edge of my seat watching most of the season. The soundtrack slaps, the direction is awesome, the set pieces are fun to look at and make perfect places for action to occur. All the storylines coming together at the end occurs so smoothly that I was actually shocked they managed to pull it off, and none of the things the characters did made me irrationally frustrated like in most horror media (except when a few characters of the main group split up for an episode — that was kind of stupid and didn’t need to happen). I like the time period they decided to set it in I guess, I felt nostalgic for the 80s even though I was born in 2003 lmao. Just go watch the first season, you won’t regret it.
Okay I might make a part 2 later because I’m tired of typing, but hopefully you guys will give these shows a chance!!! 💕💕💕

Would you say IASIP is even a good show?
I watched it because I thirsted on Charlie Day and I'm not an isolated case, but outside of the thirst, does the show even work?
I feel like it's average and I don't understand how it got 18 seasons aside from its averageness playing in its favor, as well as conservatives and liberals both being able to think the show is on their side (to some extent). Maybe it's also beloved because it's ~the American Dream~? They started with pretty much no money and stuff (allegedly; but they didn't start from nothing. I seem to recall that at least CD's parents are artists or something) and got quite popular.
I'd be interested to see your thoughts because YES there are great episodes, but...
yeah, I like the show which is a pretty good indicator that it's not an objectively good show. I think they got lucky, with the time period and content. I'm not sure what the formula for their success was, but I would say that 18 seasons .. too long... sorry. at a certain point you worry that it's just going to go downhill and lose our love. right ? anyways yeah I started watching for the memes. stayed for the yucky hot guy.

Did you see It’s always sunny is being renewed for 4 more seasons? That would be 18 seasons in total! Are you nervous at all that it won’t be /as/ funny? I kinda am, I just hope no more The Gang Texts episodes (even tho that one wasn’t even that bad)
Hey, thanks for the ask! Yes I saw that and I’m suuuper excited!! 18 seasons! I know where you’re coming from with your concerns but I’m optimistic right now the show will still be able to make me laugh. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think there was a noticeable dip in quality in the latest seasons (13 and 14) but not so much that it turns me off the show. There were still episodes that made me laugh: The Gang Fights Global Warming, Paddy's Has a Jumper, The Gang Gets New Wheels, The Gang Solves the Bathroom Problem, etc. Were they the best Sunny episodes IMO? Not really, but that’s a high standard to judge them by and they’re still fantastic compared to a lot of episodes of other comedies I’ve tried. And I laughed at The Gang Texts too, there were weak moments but “Are you pissing on me?”, Eggplaa, and that absurd ending were hilarious to me. Assuming that there will be no production constraints like in s13 and RCG keeps on being the ones writing most of the episodes (assuming they still have fresh ideas) I actually have a small hope that IASIP will go back to season 12 quality (top tier season IMO)? Like they’ll have learned that they need more proper (if that makes sense) character interactions like The Gruesome Twosome, The Dynamic Duo, and Charlie and Dee instead of focusing a lot on Mac’s neediness and Dennis’ rejection of him lol. But maybe that’s too optimistic! We’ll have to wait and see but at the moment I’ll still be tuning in for season 15 since I think IASIP will still have hits. I think they’ll still be some misses in those 4 new seasons but they had misses before (Frank’s Brother way back in s7) while the show on the whole still remained very strong.
In essence do I think the show will continue to be as funny as classic PEAK Sunny? Probably not (and it hasn’t been for a bit tbh). But do I think it’ll still be 100% worth watching and still be better than most comedies out there? Yeah!

You know? Yeah, I do think newer seasons of IASIP are different from the others. But I also like it more for one reason: for some reason, maybe it’s something that’s just me and literally isn’t there, the newer stuff reminds me of season one. Now don’t get me wrong, I love Danny Devito, and I understand that season one is where the show was finding its legs. It’s the same with the Simpsons. But the fact is, just like the Simpsons, I enjoy a show when I first watch it or I stop watching it. I don’t wait a season for it to get good. So if I start a show and I like it, and it turns out that season 2 and onwards it different because season 1 was actually the “awkward, finding it’s footing” era? I’ll like the awkward era better. I like season 1 Simpsons better than golden age. I like season 1 Sunny better than the more iconic parts of the show. I don’t dislike the polished popular stuff! I just started a show, liked what I saw, and it changed. Even if it was for the “better,” it’s not what I liked it for. I feel like Sunny feels more like season 1, and I like that. It’s a little more sobering, a little more low-key on humor, but also very topical in their - behavior. Like, lethal weapon 7 actually really reminded me of jokes from the first episode, playing each character’s specific type of racism true to the character while also satirizing a common bigot stereotype today. Again, maybe it’s just me. But I just finished season 15 and I’m in a bad place so that means media analysis.

hi do you think older sitcoms are essential viewing? if so which do you recommend? i tried taking your quiz but i'm ashamed of not knowing any of the older ones hahaha
depends on what ur goal is!!! (i assume this is about the US version rather than britcoms just bc statistically that's more likely lol)
personally i like older sitcoms bc a) i just think they're neat :) and b) sitcom history IS tv history IS media history IS modern history. in the us and uk specifically sitcoms are so integral to the dna of the country, theyve been there since the beginning, they're the POPULAR television they're what everyone watched. even when they aren't 'good' they're just so omnipresent and influential that they affect literally everything else.
i also think it's cool as a litmus test for where the country is on social issues. invariably sitcoms were the first things to talk about stuff like race and sexuality (and not in the bland woke points way of modern shows lmao) because they were ALLOWED to because it was a safe environment bc 1. it's Funny so when the topic makes people uncomfortable they get to do Nervous Laughter and it's not too serious and 2. everything in a sitcom goes back to the status quo at the end of the episode so there's no Threat from these Scary New Concepts because it will be gone by the end. and yeah it means there was a lot of offensive shit sometimes lol but in the context of the time there is surprisingly little 'punching down' humour it's more just ~poltically incorrect~ which is better than pretending things just don't exist in the 70s imo. and again because it's SUCH a bland and popular genre it made a huge difference to Normalising things like shows like will&grace and the cosby show weren't perfect but just having them on as this safe middle class (bc yeah if they were going ~~socially progressive they were almost always middle class to make it palatable lol) concept made the middle class white cishets go wow 😌 guess they aren't evil freaks 😌 and joe biden even credited w&g for paving the way to gay marriage LOL which yeah obviously none of this is ideal but i think it's cool and has its place in social history!!
it's also just a cool little time capsule especially in domesticoms to see what people were concerned about at the time. this is especially true for britcoms bc of the whole kitchen sink realism thing but applies to us shows too!! like the episode of the golden girls where the children are afraid they'll die in a nuclear war before theyre adults (ah.. the 80s<3) or in rising damp (uk show from the 70s!!!) where there's a joke about not using aerosols bc of the ozone layer which are like Oh This Has Been A Thing For This Long
ANYWAY that's enough rambling. are old sitcoms essential viewing. if u want to fully understand the modern tv landscape then i think yes (especially shows like community and bojack that are very much About television and its legacy, or shows that are satirical subversions like iasip). but like not trying to be a snob u don't HAVE to lol. if u want to understand more about America As A Country then yes. if u want to find some shows that are genuinely enjoyable if in a different way to modern television then yes. yes <3
idk how old you consider 'older' sitcoms to be but some Academic highlights:
beulah (1950) - so a lot of EARLY early sitcoms were radio shows that moved into the new medium, and two of these shows were beulah and amos n andy, both of which were minstrel shows by white men. but when they moved to tv, they actually cast black actors/actresses for the most part, which i just find.. very interesting?? amos n andy did still use some blackface tho whereas iirc beulah never did. anyway this show was a HIT and was the first sitcom to star an african american woman, and also didn't have a laugh track which was rare in those days. obviously very outdated now but a piece of history!!
i love lucy (1951) - famous for a reason, the definition of tv history, literally INVENTED the flat lighting style that every multicam sitcom uses so they can shoot from multiple angles at once without shadows, genuinely funny physical comedy and vaudeville, lucille ball is the reason star trek got made so we love her <3
the adventures of ozzie and harriet (1952) - there's over 400 episodes of this and ive not watched most of them bc im not Super into it but it's definitely worth checking out as a Historical Artefact. technically a sitcom but also kind of invented reality tv since it's about a real life family playing themselves, specifically the nelson family. as in ricky nelson. ricky nelson the singer. he grew up on this show.
the honeymooners (1955) - this was filmed on a literal stage in a literal theatre and it feels like it. iconic and referenced a lot but i don't really like it :( wham boom straight to the moon
for Full History probably check out either leave it to beaver or father knows best for the middle class white picket fence domesticom but neither are Particularly notable
the dick van dyke show (1961) - one of my favs!!!! notable for blending the domesticom with the workplace sitcom since you see rob at home and at work (he's a tv writer so there's a canon reason for everyone speaking in quips). this show said women's rights for a) making rob genuinely love his wife b) making one of rob's two co-workers a woman and c) mary tyler moore, a new mother irl, saying I Am Not Going To Do The Vacuuming In Heels And A Hoop Skirt Are You Insane and wearing pants <3. v warm and funny show!!!
the addams family (1964) - ok so this show wasn't actually as revolutionary as everyone on this website likes to pretend it was, pretty much the only 'i hate my wife' show at this point was the honeymooners, there had been loving families, there had been non-middle-class-normative families, the munsters launched the same year and was almost identical. HOWEVER still makes the list bc there were a LOT of fantasy sitcoms in the 60s so they need representing at it was genuinely one of the best (but shout out to i dream of jeannie since that's the fantasy sitcom that sitcom textbooks love to use)
all in the family (1971) - ok so norman lear was a bit of a sitcom legend so one of his had to be included and this was really his first. ol norman loved a britcom so this show is actually based on till death us do part but im not convinced they actually got royalties. anyway one of the first SPECIFICALLY political sitcoms, framed as like young progressive generation vs old conservative generation, also one of the first ever tv shows to suffer from Asshole Main Character Is Erroneously Idolised syndrome. also compare w the honeymooners how all early sitcoms abt working class families tended to revolve around arguments :(
m*a*s*h (1972) - having a bit of a Moment on tumblr rn which is what she deserves. there were a LOT of war-based sitcoms in the early days but this one is significant because even though it was about the korean war it was obviously About vietnam politically. also klinger <333 did so much for queer ppl the Types of jokes surrounding his cross-dressing are very important. also the finale is the most-watched broadcast in america in history outside of recent superbowls, the apollo 11 launch, and nixon's resignation, so that's pretty iconic.
sanford and son (1972) - another norman lear sitcom this time based on britcom steptoe and son, with the major difference being the uk ver had white characters whereas this was one of the first (possibly the first??) all-black sitcom since the 50s. which is a lot of pressure. but it was a success and meant there were then a fair few in the rest of the 70s so that 'black sitcom' became its whole own genre, although they were less likely to have ~universal appeal~ and cross over to white audiences
soap (1977) - SOAP MY BELOVED!! cult classic, soap opera parody, historically significant for having the one of the first main openly gay characters and the earliest one that people still care about (because soap operas are another genre that love to tackle Big Social Issues so of COURSE a soap opera sitcom is gonna have one). by all accounts Bad Gay Rep™ but i love him so much <3
cheers (1982) - cheers isn't even the best sitcom in the cheers universe (frasier <3) but it is one of the most watched tv shows of all time so whatever. nothing That notable about it outside of its popularity, though sam/diane was one of the first big central will-they-won't-they plots.
idk if the 90s still count as older sitcoms?? i won't go into depth bc this post is way too long already but most academically notable 90s shows r seinfeld and will & grace, and ig friends (ew)
BUT if u don't care about sitcom history hfjshd here are some more of my fav pre-90s Vintage Sitcoms that i just watch for fun :) (warning i do NOT have good taste i genuinely like schmaltzy trash):
family affair
bewitched
my mother the car
the brady bunch
wkrp in cincinnati
full house
the golden girls
happy days

So, a large catalyst in Mac’s sexual awakening was his eventual unwillingness / inability to sleep with women anymore (consider Dusty in Misses the Boat) whereas Dennis’ sex life has been relatively undiscussed until TGGR when he displays unwillingness/ inability to sleep with a woman ... what if he... WHAT IF HE’S GOING THROUGH THE SAME THING!?
yo ok so!!! first of all, YES, i think you’re onto something. second of all, this ask sent me to the wikipedia list of iasip episodes bc i was like wait...when was the last time dennis actually was successful with a woman on screen? and i’m pretty sure it was four fucking years ago in season 10, “beats boggs,” with gecko tat tilapia farm desert trash. everything else, i believe, is just heresay, just what dennis tells us he’s done, or else its him being blatantly unsuccessful with women (stripping in “ptsdee,” “group dates,” flirting with tara in “gets new wheels,” etc.)
for being the self-professed womanizer of the gang, dennis has shockingly little onscreen success with women. he’s far more obsessed with his looks, and sleeping with women seems like nothing more than a barometer by which to measure his own attractiveness. (is this awful, sexist behavior? yes. i’m not making excuses for dennis. he’s bad and he should feel bad. but he’s also complex and that’s why he’s interesting to analyze lol)
so! if we take “gets romantic” at its word, instead of a one-off parody/meta episode that has no bearing on canon (which honestly i still am afraid it might be, despite loads of evidence to the contrary lol), then yeah, you’re right. i think dennis is tired. he’s tired of the game. he says to mac that he’s never put this much effort into sleeping with women before, and we know that’s not true. he has gone to great lengths, invented new identities, created an entire fucking evil system to do it. but i don’t think it’s ever felt like effort to him before. and now, as you said, just like it did for mac, it seems like it’s getting more and more exhausting for dennis to get it up for women, both in a sexual and mental way. it’s not like he was ever that successful at it anyway, but now his heart really isn’t in it. the only alternative, however, is vulnerability, intimacy, honesty, and admitting that the first 40 years of his life were kind of a lie, which are all things that dennis is very afraid of.
so dennis, if you’re out there, here’s my message to you:
everyone’s afraid of vulnerability, bitch! now let’s get you some romance.

Never ending thoughts on 10x5
I finally finished the episode.  Whew, I’m sad. I’ll start by saying that, yeah, I really didn’t like the “Fuck no” answer, mainly because I feel there there should be some context there that just wasn’t. I’m not taking it at face value because I don’t think that Ian is flat out not wanting to marry Mickey. But I couldn’t tell if he was just trying to put up a front for Lip, and if so why? Or if he was discouraged by the way that Mickey shot him down 2 episodes ago, even though we sort of got Mickey’s reasoning for that (Ian didn’t wait before, he hasn’t sacrificed as much as Mickey), or if Ian just can’t think that far into the future/just isn’t that optimistic.
I’m kind of leaning toward the last simply because of the day the way Ian’s day had just gone. He was hoping to see Freddie immediately and that didn’t happen. He tried to talk to Lip about Mickey and kept getting cut off. He skipped any kind “yay freedom!!” activity because he wanted to get home and see his family who he missed, and not only weren’t they there, but his house was full of people that he has never met before. He sees his parole officer and not only is she terrible and gross, but she puts him on the worst kind of scam, dangling a job that meant a lot in front of him but then forcing him to fake it and perverting his idea of providing a valuable service - you could see the absolute disgust on his face and I loved that.  So by the time he gets home, any idealism and/or optimism that he started off with is gone. So I can just imagine him being like “yeah who the hell knows what will happen nothing else has gone the way I wanted.” The trouble is I shouldn’t have to imagine it and I wish they would have just gone with him saying “I don’t know” like Lip did. I am SURE that the writers are going for the “character says one thing in episode A only for that to be completely turned on its head by episode F” but that is all about the writers trying to be clever and not about Ian, specifically the Ian that we saw JUST TWO EPISODES AGO!  If there had been any kind of farewell or any kind of conversation between Mickey and Ian that gave any insight as to how they left things, maybe it would have gone down better.  Maybe we were supposed to infer that Mickey really was auditioning boyfriends in prison (or that Ian thought he was) or maybe we’ll get a conversation about it in the next episode, but I am tired of trying to headcanon things when it comes to Ian.
THAT SAID - Ian DID NOT shit talk Mickey, Ian is not falling back into old patterns, and this isn’t yet one more thing that Ian needs to add to his Ian Gallagher Redemption Tour 2019.  It was one line in an episode where Ian also mentioned his love for Mickey more than once and even compared his love for Mickey to the love that Lip has for his son. And that is huge, but of course, completely ignored by a percentage of fans.
More thoughts (because this isn’t long enough):
* “Becoming a gay icon and what not...”  It was the what not that killed me.
*  Ian’s affection for his family will always be one of my favorite things about him and I loved that there was sibling annoyance too (”figures she would take Fiona’s room”)
* Frank telling Carl to figure out which was the best baby made me laugh
*This show can turn a decent love interest into a complete asshole in record time - looking at you Kelly.
*Debbie’s storyline is completely unwatchable as was whatever that cut-rate IASIP rip off storyline they were trying to pull with Kevin.
* I really like Tami and I like her and Lip together. Don’t fuck this one up Lip.
* I have never been a “Mickey or Bust” type of fan, but lord Mickey can’t get here fast enough
