MDZS Rereading - Chapter 3 (Part Two) - The Prideful (Arrogance 6-10)

Oh boy this uh. Hey boys you don't notice anything wrong with that statue, do you? No? Alright just checking. I'm sure it's fine.

Alright now it's definitely not correct you guys.

"This Heavenly Maiden statue had once been an ordinary rock, but it just so happened to resemble a person, so it had received centuries of worship that led it to gaining spiritual power. However, its greed was insatiable. One single, deviant whim gave it a mind to expedite the elevation of its spiritual powers by way of consuming souls. Offering the fulfillment of a wish in exchange for the devouring of a soul—it operated on the same terms as those wish-makers who offered their own souls up to be devoured. It was a fair trade, by all appearances. Everyone got what they wanted, which was why the needle of the Compass of Ill Winds did not move and the spirit-attraction flag summoned nothing. The treasured swords and talismans were all ineffective because the creature on Mount Dafan wasn’t some nefarious being, but instead a god! This was a rogue god, raised up by centuries of worship, so to use devices made for attacking malicious spirits against it was the equivalent of attempting to extinguish fire with fire!"

I dunno, god or not, still seems pretty nefarious to me. Also with all the adaptations I always forget what's actually going on with the Heavenly Maiden. I still don't entirely know tbh. Is it important? Is it foreshadowing for Guanyin Temple? Who knows? Not me! What is this supposed to be, analysis of the story or something?

Ok but like the idea of someone asking a god for their husband to love them for the rest of their life and the god just killing him to cash in on that deal... Like fucked up monkey's paw situation but the monkey's paw eats you and your soul, and none of that shit was in the contract.

(I had a picture of the Heavenly Maiden eating people here but I was like. No I don't think so. I don't like it. I'm not going to subject anyone else to it if they don't want to see it. Just watch Attack on Titan. Same vibes.)

"Just then, clinking and clanking sounds resounded within the forest of Mount Dafan. Clink clank, clink clank. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow, the noise came haltingly and reverberated in the deathly silent forest. It sounded like iron chains hitting each other, dragging on the ground. It was coming closer and closer, louder and louder. For some reason, this sound was oppressively threatening. Even the soul-eating Heavenly Maiden stopped her dance, her arms raised in the air as she stared blankly at the deep darkness from whence the sound came. Wei Wuxian put away the flute and stared intently in the same direction. Although the ominous feeling was growing stronger and stronger, since this creature was willing to answer his summons, then at least it was one that would obey him."

Best Boy Wen Ning! He's so cute? He's so cute! He's... The cutest corpse under the Yiling Patriarch!

"His face was pale and delicate, and as a matter of fact, he had a certain easy and somewhat melancholic handsomeness."

Wei Wuxian's hotness scale returns: "Wen Ning: actually pretty hot, for a corpse. Most corpses? Would not, but Wen Ning can get it, probably." (Wen Ning: Wei-gongzi... What does any of that mean?)

"This melody was one that came to his mind naturally, gentle and tranquil, a significant contrast to the strange, sharp sound from before."

You know that feeling when you accidentally play your love theme while demonically cultivating because you completely forgot that's your love theme? Yeah me neither. Wild.

"Yet unexpectedly, Lan Wangji’s eyes were locked firmly on him, and he’d never spared a single look Wen Ning’s way."

uNeXpEcTeDLy oh my god Wei Ying. I've got nothing.

"Seeing that nothing had happened to Jin Ling, Jiang Cheng was greatly relieved. However, that relief soon turned into a furious reprimand: “Do you not have a signal flare on you?! Don’t you know to set one off when you run into those creatures?! What are you pretending to be so strong for? Get the hell over here!” Jin Ling was angry at not having captured the soul-eating Heavenly Maiden as well, and he yelled back, “Weren’t you the one who said I had to capture it at any cost?! That I couldn’t go back to you until I caught it?!” Jiang Cheng really wanted to slap this stinking brat back to his mother’s womb. But he had indeed said those things, and he couldn’t possibly eat his own words."

Jiang Cheng is the Uncle of all time.

"There was a certain current of unspeakable anticipation as they hoped the Lan and Jiang clans really would fall out. Things would be more interesting then."

Jianghu confirmed for messy bitches who love drama but like that's nothing new. We knew that. We *opened* on that.

"He had been ranked fourth in looks and character among the young masters of the prominent clans. “Charming and cheerfully handsome,” the people had called him— and this hot-tempered Sect Leader Jiang had happened to be ranked fifth, defeated by one rank, so no one dared raise the subject with him."

Ah yes, the canonical hotness rating scale. Gotta love that we do have a canonical hotness rating scale. So there's precedent for Wei Wuxian immediately rating the hotness of whatever guys show up. He came with receipts! His sources are cited!

"Wei Wuxian continued, “Your kindness is too much, thank you. But you’re also overthinking things. Even if I like men, I don’t like all men, and I definitely don’t just go home with any man who waves at me. I’m not interested in your type.” Wei Wuxian was trying to disgust him on purpose. Jiang Cheng hated losing; no matter how nonsensical the competition, if someone were to say he wasn’t as good as so-and-so, he’d be so angry that he’d stop eating and drinking until he’d thought of a way to win against them. Sure enough, Jiang Cheng’s face darkened."

So his plan for Jiang Cheng trying to torture and probably kill him is to make him jealous that "Mo Xuanyu" doesn't want to fuck him. And this works somehow.

"Lan Wangji, on the other hand, could never tolerate such frivolous and senseless jokes. Once he grew disgusted, he would definitely draw the line and keep his distance on his own. Disgusting both of them would be like killing two birds with one stone!"

At least this works distinctly less well.

Yeah, 'Mark Your Words' coming in as the next iconic scene.

I haven't said a whole lot on this part, but on the other hand, at least I didn't go off on the Nie Sect this time! You're safe for now Qinghe Nie!

Underdiscussed MDZS topic: I think it has been broadly concluded that Wen Ning is 1) Best Boy and 2) unduly influenced by Wei Wuxian since his fierce corpse transformation, causing him to murder Jin Zixuan in a situation where he otherwise would not have. It would appear that most of the cultivation world has concluded the same thing, though they’re probably pretty on the fence about #1.

Wen Ning’s intro in the novel is as a corpse puppet. Countless accusations fly around regarding his free will and Wei Wuxian’s own cruel denial of it during his darkest times. Our perception as readers is often split between that of the cultivation world at large and that of the people who know and have FEELINGS about the main characters, and the schism between those perceptions is made most obvious regarding the Burial Mounds period. Especially because of how little exposition the novel provides about it - and how unwilling Wei Wuxian is to speak of it later.

Public perspective: Wen Ning is Wei Wuxian’s puppet, unable to form his own thoughts and feelings, and is the vessel of Wei Wuxian’s hatred for the world. He was brought back to life to be a weapon, and the Wens, as evil people fleeing their reckoning, approve of these evil arts.

Private perspective: Wei Wuxian was trying to collect the shards of many broken lives, desperately trying to bring a sense of good into a deeply twisted situation, and created a very complicated outcome. He brought a brother back to his sister and gave Wen Ning an opportunity to live again, albeit in an upsetting way, and respected his autonomy as best he could while their lives crumbled around them. Wen Ning himself took joy in protecting his family for what little time they had left, and was grateful for the comfort provided to his sister despite having...complex repressed feelings about being a corpse. He was happy to see Wei Wuxian again. Wen Ning has free will and Wei Wuxian appears to really value not even attempting to overtake that.

Audience perspective: Wen Ning was brought back to life because of his sister’s request and Wei Wuxian’s desire to repay a debt/unwillingness to accept failure without consideration for his own desires. His existence is a perversion of the natural order, but his subservient nature and ties to Wei Wuxian cause him to make the best of a bad situation. He’s a good person, and has maintained an outwardly positive perspective, but cannot cry any longer, cannot have meaningful connections outside of the Wens, and is, in a way, cursed. Worse: he is vulnerable to Wei Wuxian’s control superseding his own desires, especially regarding Wei Wuxian losing control of the resentful energy that powers them both. In this, Wen Ning is a victim of Wei Wuxian’s greatest lapse.

Wei Wuxian’s perspective is quite similar to the audience’s, as is often the case in the novel. Perhaps it is due to his bad memory, perhaps it is a response to trauma, but Wei Wuxian often internalizes his public persona in times of great stress or conflict that is truly irresolvable. He simply forgets many of the little things that form a dissonant image...or never speaks of them again, preferring to move on with his life. (Or his death. His death is such a mysterious thing in the novel it drives me nuts)

The thing about the audience perspective, though, is that it is as flawed as the other perspectives. In particular: Wen Ning clearly disagrees with it. Arguments can be made for him protecting Wei Wuxian from his own actions, piggybacking on Wen Ning’s meek and mild attitude...but the novel proves, time and again, that this is a deeply flawed approach to Wen Ning’s character. Out of the entire cast, Wen Ning is second only to Lan Wangji in his directness regarding the truth or moral core of a situation. He confronted Jiang Cheng about his golden core, despite being sworn to secrecy. He rescued Wei Wuxian despite having minimal contact with him. He stood up to his sister about this reckless rescue. He turned his back on the Wen sect!!!! He came back as a FIERCE CORPSE!!!! He willingly turned himself in when it was clear that Wei Wuxian was going to die for them all!!!!! When contrasted with the actions of the rest of the main cast, it’s obvious he’s got a spine of steel. He’s polite, he was raised to stay out of the way and to not be a liability to his sister, but he’s got even more decisiveness than her underneath it all when it comes to relationships he values. Wen Ning is clever, emotionally literate, and unafraid of facing the truth. Even Wei Wuxian forgets this at times, and is often embarrassed about underestimating Wen Ning’s character.

This is important.

Wen Ning doesn’t blame Wei Wuxian for Qiongqi Path. He does blame himself, though, and his regrets are largely focused on how the situation deteriorated. He isn’t as horrified by the murder he’s committed.

Key to this: Wei Wuxian admits, in that oblique way of his, that Wen Ning killed Jin Zixuan because Wei Wuxian saw him as an enemy and Wen Ning is attuned to his emotions. Not his orders, not his control, not his resentful energy, but his emotions.

Losing control was losing the ability to hold back the resentment that Wen Ning died with. And what does Wei Wuxian and most of the cultivation world skim over regarding this resentment? Wen Ning died on Qiongqi Path. He was killed by Jins.

The same people, wearing the same colours, who attacked the man Wen Ning is now tasked with guarding.

Wen Ning had his own reasons for losing control that are broadly independent of Wei Wuxian, but acknowledging those reasons requires 1) acknowledging Wen Ning as his own person and 2) acknowledging that, as a person, he may have homicidal inclinations towards that people that murdered his sect, his clan, his direct family, and himself. The Wens, both victims and victimizers is the narrative, might hold some desire for retribution in their heart that echoes that of the Sunshot Campaign members. And that’s hard, because that’s complicated - no clear villains or victors here.

MXTX plays with narrative like this a lot in MDZS. It’s subtle at times, obvious at others, but it’s a consistent theme of the novel. It’s also one that a lot of discourse seems to miss.

If the character perspectives isn’t enough support for you, though, there’s also the world-building context to look at. According to legend, Qiongqi Path is where the founder of the Qishan Wen Clan, Wen Mao, rose to fame in just one battle. Hundreds of years before the novel's beginning, he fought a divine beast for eighty-one days and ultimately claimed its life. The divine beast was the Qiongqi, a beast of chaos known to punish the good and encourage the evil, devouring the loyal and the righteous while awarding the malicious. Of course, many of the Wen clan’s legends can be looked at with suspicion. But Qiongqi Path was already a graveyard. It’s a tainted place, with tainted memories for the people involved, firmly seated in a legend that reeks of the inevitability of somebody dying there that day, regardless of one man’s ability to maintain control of another.

WWX stans saying he would have been the best uncle and Jin Ling's favorite uncle like we didn't see the man see Jin Ling go through the most horrifying event in his life and witness his uncle (who was also one of his two guardians) painful, traumatizing death after the said uncle was dismembered and after some really earth-shattering truths being unraveled, and LEAVE THE BOY THERE CRYING WHILE STARING AT HIS UNCLE'S COFFIN to go fuck in the bushes with LWJ. Like not an hour after the incident, or even a quarter of an hour. no. right after that whole shitshow happened!

(And JL accusingly asked JC why he let them go! JL...my boy... the real question is why did THEY choose to go?! When WWX had a traumatized nephew & a literally and figuratively bleeding brother to take care of, and LWJ had a traumatized brother who seconds ago WAS WILLING TO DIE WITH JGY and LWJ hadn't yet made sure that LXC's willingness has ceased since!)

And then WWX didn't even go to check on JL after that! While JL was a 15 y/o sect leader dealing with the power vacuum left after the scandals of the previous sect leader who was also coincidentally the Xiandu, & going through a power struggle with one of the worst sects out there.

WWX asks after Jin Ling from the Lan Juniors instead of going to see him himself! When he next sees JL it's said that the news of his struggles had reached Wangxian in Gusu, meaning that WWX hadn't dropped by to check on JL to hear of these from JL himself and he hadn't dropped by to check in on him even after hearing these news! He was only there bc JL had invited the Lan Juniors for a field trip!

WWX shows his love with drastic, big, dramatic, sacrificial acts like giving his golden core to JC or transferring Jin Ling's curse to himself, but since he himself loves to run away from his traumas and his responsibilities, he's not someone who can be counted on to help his loved-ones with their traumas and responsibilities. He didn't do it with Jiang Cheng and he didn't do it with Jin Ling. He never even talked to Wen Ning about Wen Qing and the Wen Remnants. (Or how WN feels about being a zombie forcefully brought back to life in a world that hates and fears him)

Maybe diplomacy is not his strength and he'll only make things worse by trying to help JL with his sect leader duties, but it wouldn't have taken anything from him if he had only stayed by JL at least for the night after the Guanyin Temple, not even doing anything, but just being there. (And I understand that narratively it might have been a point in the story where some readers might want to see the main couple sail off into the sunset together, but all it would have taken for the main couple to be shown as less of a dick was adding a phrase like "the next morning..." or even "later that day" or something like that before writing about them disappearing into the sunset...or the bushes.)

I love Wei Wuxian, but post-resurrection Wei Wuxian was really...not particularly an ideal family member.

He didn't realize that he was setting up so close to where the most popular boy in school, Lan Wangji, lived. Lan Wangji has always been something of a mystery, never saying much about himself. The last thing Wei Ying expects is to be invited to move in to the Lan house- but even more surprising is that it turns out that whenever a cursed Lan is hugged, they turn into a zodiac animal! Kay's comments: A modern Fruits Baskets AU! No prior knowledge of Fruits Baskets is required, I promise, because I had no idea what Fruits Basket was either when I started reading this fic. It's very cute. Basically, the members of the Lan family will get transformed into animals every time they are hugged and now, Wei Wuxian is thrown into the mix, because he gets to stay with them after being kicked out. It's cute, but there's also mystery and family intrique happening and it really left an impression on me. Excerpt: By the time he’d dragged himself back to his campsite, he kinda wanted to cry as he saw that even with most of the mud having been dug away, the tent itself was definitely too broken to provide any real shelter, and he’d left his stuff at the Lan house. He was just contemplating saying ‘fuck it’ and either curling up on the ground or walking all the way towards the nearest motel, which would take forever, when he heard a deep voice call out, “Wei Ying.” He turned and did his best to smile brightly even though it felt like everything was falling apart around him. “Lan Wangji! Did you come to bring me my stuff? I didn’t get the chance to thank you earlier for getting it all, so thank you.” “You cannot stay here.” Wei Ying’s stomach dropped. “Oh, right. I get it. It’s fine, I’ll figure something else out.” Lan Wangji frowned. “It’s not safe. We have a spare room, so you may as well stay there.”

Took a glance at the Canon Jiang Cheng tag today out of curiosity and got a free blocklist for my trouble but I did notice something really interesting

That is to say: Most of the stans “reclaiming” the tag literally outright admitted that their main reason for liking Jiang Cheng was that he’s attractive. The vast majority of the stan posts that I saw talked about his appearance first and foremost, and the other batch admitted they were woobie-fying him. Art was either hypersexualized or soft chibi shapes and all of it focused on either his suffering or him raising Jin Ling (specifically in a way that seemed Milf-y. He was drawn with exaggerated hips a lot.)

Most interestingly, almost none of the fanart was of CQL Jiang Cheng. Almost none of the gif sets showed CQL Jiang Cheng. This was Manhua and Donghua design Jiang Cheng, sexually exaggerated and squished into an UwU Woobie Baby Sadboi shape, palatable for consumption.

I’ve long had issues with the way fandoms — and the world at large — rank characters based on visual appearance. Wen Ning is to Wei Wuxian what so many fics depict Nie Huiasang as being; his best friend and closest confidant, the person who is in his corner no matter what, who sees and supports him and stands up for him even when it’s scary. But it’s hard to picture Wen Ning as the booty-shorts-wearing white-girl-wasted gender-ambiguous party friend, so Nie Huiasang gets that roll. If Wen Qing shows up at all, she must be The Mean Lesbian, because if she’s straight then her crisp no-nonsense attitude (which is literally just the way every trauma nurse in the world acts) isn’t attractive, it isn’t fun. And of course if she IS the mean lesbian, then her vulnerability and her fear and her deep compassion and desire to help people needs to be shoved to the side, because the mean lesbian doesn’t feel those things. That’s not sexy.

I don’t really know where I’m going with this. This problem isn’t unique to MDZS or Jiang Cheng Stans or anything like that. It’s a pervasive issue I’ve seen everywhere for as long as I can remember; beauty exclusively means fuckability. There are no versions of attractiveness that don’t lend themselves to sexual consumption. Beauty also means morality and value. If someone is not beautiful — that is, if you don’t want to fuck them — then they are unworthy. Characters that are extremely important to a story get either erased (if the fandom doesn’t think they’re hot) or rewritten (if the fandom does think they’re hot) because hot people can’t do bad things, or at least they can’t do bad things that aren’t kind of thrilling and exciting. Because they’re hot.

It reminds me of people who are into Slashers, actually? Although from what I’ve seen slasherfuckers are more self-aware than Jiang Cheng Stans.

Boy was that a sentence.

4. I'd like to request an ITMF! It's for any fics where Madam Yu gets her comeuppance. I'd previously made this request, but due to unfortunate timing, it coincided with the sudden trend in jiang bashing fics. It's not the same thing. I was introduced to this story by Jellyfisfire's JAW-DROPPINGLY INCREDIBLE podfic and I was instantly and irrevocably *hooked*. The story is insanely well written with emotions that will punch you in the gut and an incredible reinterpretation of canon into the illegal street racing world. Add to that Jelly's voice which pulls out every one of those emotions and the bass thumping and tires squealing and I was HOOKED

Training

The Lan juniors are practicing archery when Wei Ying stumbles upon the Cloud Recesses' training grounds in his aimless walk around the place. He observes for a bit, at first.

Sizhui's stance is nearly perfect, he recognizes and corrects his own mistakes easily and does not seem bothered about missing shots. Lan Zhan's hand is so obvious that Wei Ying finds it endearing.

Lan Jingyi, however, is growing increasingly frustrated. His shots are powerful and quick but he doesn't score as many points as he would like, muttering to himself about whatever he could be doing wrong. He seems more focused on the target rather than his stance and it shows the more he misses.

"Straighten your shoulders, Jingyi." Wei Ying intervenes, "And lower your elbow a little, you'll shoot too low."

He picks up a bow and arrow - how nostalgic, he thinks - and demonstrates the correct stance, smiling to himself as he releases the bow string and hits bullseye.

"Wow..."

"Why do you look so surprised? Don't you know I won the archery competition at the last discussion conference in Qishan? I even beat Hanguang-Jun and Zewu-Jun!"

"Hanguang-Jun told us once, he said you were the best archer of your generation." Sizhui says, and Wei Ying can't help a laugh.

"Lan Zhan thinks I'm the best in everything, and I think he is. We have this back and forth constantly and we've made zero progress on it."

"Uncle Wen Ning said he used to do archery as well."

"Yup! Honestly I think he was among the best, he just never got the chance to shine..."

It's bittersweet to remember - Wen Ning, young and alive, so incredibly skilled but just as anxious. If Wen Chao had minded his business, everyone would have been able to see the true potential that lay within the shy boy. It all went to hell far too soon for Wen Ning to garner the respect and admiration he deserved.

"Anyway," Wei Ying continues, "what are you guys training for?"

"Our own archery competition!" Sizhui responds, eagerly. "The invitation to the discussion conference mentioned they'll hold one this year and Zewu-Jun picked us as representatives for the Lan sect!"

Nie Huaisang always seemed to like watching archery, Wei Ying thought to himself. I wonder why.

"So what's the prize?"

"A war fan."

"A war fan?"

"Yeah!" Jingyi gesticulates at about half his height and opens his arms wide. "It's about this big, and you can fly on it and stuff."

"I didn't even know such things existed..." Wei Ying replied. "Much less that the Nie would have them. But then again... a very surprising sect if I've seen one!"

Lan Jingyi picked up his bow again. "I wanna win it so I can fan Jin Ling away when he's being annoying."

Wei Ying chuckles at the image. "He won't be participating, right? Since he's a sect leader now."

"No, but he would have stood no chance anyway." And Lan Jingyi pointedly misses the target when he tries shooting an arrow all arrogantly. Wei Ying barely holds in his laugh and Sizhui sighs fondly before hitting his own target right in the middle.

"Say, Sizhui," Jingyi begins, pleadingly, "if you win, will you give me the fan?"

"Remember what Hanguang-Jun told us, do not receive praise for deeds you haven't done yourself-"

"-and do not accept criticism you do not deserve." Jingyi completed. "But I don't want the praise, I just want the fan!"

The thing about chengning is that THE INSTANT Jiang Cheng became aware of Wen Ning's existence, Wei Wuxian immediately compared them, saying Jiang Cheng, Guy Who Earns Love By Being Good, wasn't as good as Wen Ning at archery. How could they be friends then? The next time Jiang Cheng is conscious around Wen Ning, he was just tortured by Wen Ning's cousin (possibly while Wen Ning watched); before Jiang Cheng can process anything, Wen Qing puts him--a coreless torture victim--into a coma.

(Does anyone else think about how hungry he was when he woke up! How weak his legs were! How many aches he had deep in his bones!! While Wei Wuxian lied to him over and over again that his core could be restored?)

Jiang Cheng is blindfolded and pretending to be someone else the next time Wen Ning sees him. Wen Ning stays silent, but what was he thinking? He'd had those days of bonding and planning with Wei Wuxian, those days of travel with Wen Qing, to think about what was going to happen to Wei Wuxian. He knew about damage to lower dantians, and how most people don't recover. He knew, too, that Wei Wuxian was insistent that Jiang Cheng needed his cultivation to live; that Jiang Cheng is so competitive that he'd never be able to survive like this; because that's what Wei Wuxian told him.

Wen Ning doesn't know the dynamic between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian is, at its best, best friends/brothers/sword and shield; he doesn't know they finish each other's sentences and protect each other from harm. Wen Ning, raised as the meek brother of a favored maternal cousin to Wen Ruohan, has seen every vice of the powerful. Does he look at Wei Wuxian and see a livelier Wen Zhuliu, equally bound to serve Jiang Cheng regardless of his own morals and thoughts? Does he look at Jiang Cheng and see a more circumspect Wen Chao?

What a perfect, tragic form of fealty it must have seemed to him. How noble and giving of Wei Wuxian, to not even want credit! Especially to give anything to him, that awful loud boy bursting with pride. (Different of course from Wei Wuxian's pride, since Wei Wuxian is so marvelous!)

Then, what, maybe Wen Ning is conscious while chengxian break up, and Jiang Cheng says Wei Wuxian would probably only have to give up some of the Wen remnants to save the rest? Wen Ning doesn't know that Jiang Cheng tried to defend Wei Wuxian to the other sects, and he certainly doesn't know that Jiang Cheng had no idea what had become of the Wen. He doesn't know that Jiang Cheng, who had barely been conscious, still remembered who had helped him; still spoke up for the Wen siblings. If he was aware under those talismans, what must he think of the man Wei Wuxian endured days of torment for?

Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning handle night hunts for the next year to earn money for the Wen survivors. During that year, Jiang Cheng brings Yanli in her wedding clothes; and he insists that Wen Ning leave. Wen Ning, carefully carrying a warm bowl of soup, gives them privacy.

Then Wei Wuxian, wielding Wen Ning like a sword, destroys Jiang Yanli's happiness and takes it out on his sword. Does Wen Ning blame himself, too? Does he think of that warm soup and the kind eyes of the woman who shared it with him as Wei Wuxian beats him over and over?

Is it any wonder Wen Ning walks, resentment quiescent, to what should have been the destruction of what was left of his soul?

Wen Ning remains, only to be tormented, his will subdued. Jiang Cheng remains, too, wandering the world for answers only Wei Wuxian or Wen Ning could give.

Their, what, fifth fucking meeting? Wen Ning disobeys his master; Jiang Cheng gets his answers.

And then they watch over each other's nephews.

(The nephew it's implied Jiang Cheng knows damn well is Wen Yuan from the beginning.)

(The nephew Wen Ning ends the novel shielding from the same harm that orphaned him.)

How could I not be compelled by them?

Lie Detector Curse

Requested by anonymous: Hi, I picked up some idea from the foreign stories and came up with an idea for a request: How would Meng Yao, Lan Zhan, Zewu Jun and Wen Ning react to a reader who has something like a ''useful'' curse? Anyone near the reader lies, gets caught, gets hit out of thin air, has colored hair, longer nails, or has a colored aura around them...how would they react to a reader with this curse? Would they appreciate it or take it badly? Thx!

Pairing: Untamed boys x reader

Warnings: none, I think

Lan Zhan:

You can see auras of people

which leads to being able to see if they're dangerous or not

and also when someone is truthful or not

Lan Zhan is concerned about this

and honestly, I think he'd take it badly

because he thinks that you sacrificed something to gain such powers

it's not every day that you meet someone that can sense if someone is lying or not by seeing auras

it isn't until you explain that you had been cursed by someone else, that he somehow feels better about your powers

not fine really, because you still got cursed

he doesn't worry about them perse, he never lies

but he surely will ask for your help with some of his work that includes socializing with people

he's not good with people

and they tend to lie to him when he asks questions

and thus you follow

it makes his life much easier

and his journeys significantly shortens in time

so it definitely grows on him after time

just give him awhile

Lan Xichen:

your hair changes color depending on who you talk to

it depends on emotions

red for anger, blue for sadness, yellow for happiness, green for envy and black for nothing

but when someone lies, it turns to white

Lan Xichen definitely finds it peculiar

he isn't sure what to think

even after an explanation

he's mortified that someone would curse a child, mostly

he, honestly, finds it a bit funny at times

because you can't fully control it

which means that your hair changes at any time

even if you're talking to someone you barely know

and they always tend to run off after

he tries his best to hide his smile

but he's always quick to make sure that you don't take it to heart

he usually doesn't ask for your help regarding your curse/gift

only when it is absolutely necessary

which is often only when you jump in on your own accord

he's one of the four who really wouldn't care much in the end

Meng Yao:

you're a bit like Wen Ning

your appearance changes and your eyes turn black when someone near you is dangerous or lying

(you change immediately when you see him)

nonetheless, he never really lies to you

he learns that your powers don't take in account when he just leaves certain things out to avoid the actual truth

he finds a way to use your power for his benefit

because it makes his plans easier

he asks questions to people while you hide away

you can later tell him if it was the truth or a lie

he enjoys your powers to the fullest and you know this

hence why you stay by his side

because other people get frightened when they see you

Meng Yao never asks how you got your powers

because he honestly doesn't care

he's not here to be your best friend, he just needs your powers

when you couldn't help him out, he'll discard of you

maybe not, if you're lucky

Wen Ning:

your powers basically flip a person upside down if they lie

you can control it, you just have to look at the person as they talk

they lie?

they get thrown in the air and hung upside down

it isn't pleasant

you often don't look at people because of it

until you meet Wuxian

who loves it and lies on purpose

through him, you meet Wen Ning

who loves to see another person like him
