“Your brother?” Wei Wuxian whispers. “What do you mean, that’s your brother?”

“I mean that the yuangui you fought in Mo Village is his ghost,” Lan Zhan replies, with some difficulty. “His restless ghost, though no one has been able to capture him or put him to rest.”

This is how Wei Wuxian discovers that Lan Xichen died about two years after he did, stabbed to death by his own sworn brother during one of Nie Mingjue’s qi deviations. Funnily enough, Lan Zhan goes on to say that Gusu Lan brought no charges against Qinghe Nie or its sect leader, since not even Lan Qiren dared to suggest the tragedy was anything more than an accident on Chifeng-zun’s part.

Jin Guangshan tried to imply that Lan Zhan should sever Gusu’s ties with Qinghe, during a particularly oily attempt to “counsel a new young zongzhu during his time of mourning,” but Lan Zhan refused both out of respect for his elder brother and because he blamed Jin-zongzhu for Lan Xichen’s death.

“The Jin sect refused to execute Xue Yang despite Nie-zongzhu’s insistence that he be made to face justice,” Lan Zhan tells him, while Wei Wuxian examines his curse scars and smooths a layer of salve over them. “Righteous anger without resolution has proved fatal to Nie-zongzhu’s ancestors in the past, so I could not place the fault with him.”

“It doesn’t sound as if Zewu-jun died with any resentment at all, though,” Wei Wuxian objects. “Deaths like those usually don’t result in walking corpses, especially not for cultivators who had soul-calming ceremonies done.”

His friend nods and stares down into his teacup. “My brother bore no grievances towards Chifeng-zun, so his resentment must not have any connection with his death. I thought he might have returned to avenge himself, but his ghost has never been seen in Qinghe even once.”

Wei Wuxian sticks his arms out so that Lan Zhan can tie up his bandages, trying not to shiver at the memory of a tall, gaunt figure in white staring at him through a pair of cold eyes that were nothing like the gentle ones he used to know: eyes that looked alive when Wei Wuxian stared into them, though not human in the slightest.

“What about his grave?” he asks. “Did he break through all the resting seals, too?”

“I do not know. We dug up his coffin ten years ago, but there were no signs of disturbance over the tomb and none on his body. The body we buried has never left the Cloud Recesses, but the ghost…”

“Weird,” Wei Wuxian mutters. “But he’s never hurt anyone, has he? I mean, he did set Mo Village on fire, but…”

Lan Zhan closes his eyes.

“He has been mostly harmless. Except on the day he first appeared,” he says quietly. “He walked straight into the Glamour Hall at the Jinlintai, seized the nearest sword he could reach, and cut Jin Guangshan’s throat before over a hundred witnesses.”

Wei Wuxian feels his blood go cold. “What?”

“Mm. And then he vanished, and returned several months later in Yunmeng.”

“Yunmeng? What was he doing there?”

“Burning a temple to the ground. There were eyewitnesses.”

“What--why?” Wei Wuxian demands, throwing his hands into the air. “If he—oh, never mind. But the only person he’s killed is Jin Guangshan, right?”

His friend remains perilously silent, however. “Lan Zhan!”

“Jin Guangyao’s son died ten months after Jin Guangshan,” Lan Zhan says at last. “The leader of the Su sect suggested that my brother murdered the boy to keep him company in death, and his manor was burned to the ground the very next day.”

Later that night, Wei Wuxian dreams.

He dreams of the Cloud Recesses’ library pavilion, of the month he spent copying lines there with Lan Zhan, but Lan Zhan is nowhere to be seen. Instead, the only person with him is the mute ghost he first saw in Mo Village, with coal-black eyes and bone-white lips and garments that sound like dead skeleton leaves when they rustle over the floor.

The thing wears Lan Xichen’s face, even though Lan Xichen’s body is bricked away in a sealed coffin to keep him from breaking out of it, and Wei Wuxian feels his heart stop beating as it turns around to look at him.

“You’re searching for your murderer,” he whispers, as the thing pretending to be Zewu-jun lifts one slender arm and points in the direction of Lanling. “But it’s not Nie Mingjue. Why?”

I was made to destroy the thing I most loved, not-Lan Xichen replies. I will find the one responsible, and I will have his blood.

Wei Wuxian wakes up to find that the fire has gone out.

He huddles into Lan Zhan’s bed to keep himself warm, after that.

my FAV SCENES/MOMENTS include;;;

- “wei ying - come back” “lan zhan - let go” IT HURTS. IT HURTS. but those lines hit so fucking hard bro i couldnt NOT include them

- that moment in the very last episode where wwx walks up next to huaisang in the cloud recesses and says “do not befriend the devil :)” and then u find out huaisang basically orchestrated everything in the present day timeline

- “you even fooled hanguang jun” “...you’re right” “NOT right. i already knew he was wei ying” CATCH ME VIOLENTLY SOBBING

- when lan zhan is drunk (one of many times LOL) and wwx asks “do you like rabbits??” and he goes in the SOFTEST voice “i like...” like omg babie

- in the p early part of the timeline when wwx and the jiang clan are still learning shit at the cloud recesses and they release those lanterns ?? but specifically the moment i loved was when lan zhan sees the rabbit painted on the lantern by wwx and smiles for the first time in the show . i knew immediately i would die for him

- when everyone is getting indoctrinated by the wen clan and wwx’s little shit self start’s reciting the gusu lan clan’s disciplines and wen chao loses his mind LOL. fucking BEST.

- when lan zhan says “you’re not qualified to talk to me” to su she (i think it was su she??)

- when sizhui regains his memories and realizes wwx basically raised him and the hug that follows . fuck . i cried so hard

- when wwx has just reappeared after being in the burial mounds for 3 months and basically makes lingjiao to commit suicide with his flute :))) i lost my mind like . the BADDEST BITCH WEI WUXIAN .

- literally any scene with wen ning being wuxian’s loyal noodle . esp after he (wen ning) gets all powerful

- that moment when everyone is at the jin clan’s territory doing the night hunt and wwx says “i once considered you my lifelong soulmate” and lan zhan says “i still am” CHILLS. SOULMATES AF

- when zewu jun goes “master wei. don’t take it to heart” and reveals he knows wwx’s true identity (after he’s reincarnated) god that was so cool idk

- ok this is a moment that was so heartbreaking that it deserves to be mentioned:: after the massacre of lotus pier by lingjiao n company, when they show jiang fengmian and madam yu dead, holding hands on the floor on sword’s hall. on god i choked on my own tears

- same thing for this one,, it broke my heart and i cried but it was rly powerful and deserves to be mentioned:: when song lan goes to find xiao xingchen in coffin town and xue yang’s cut his tongue off and xingchen’s stabbed song lan unknowingly and song lan reaches out to xingchen with his sword so xc will recognize him and he JUST misses. and xc and xue yang walk away from his dead body. fuck. my chest PHYSICALLY hurt with how WRONG that was. this show did not spare the emotional trauma

- kinda sad (no actually, 100% is sad) but the bloodbath of nightless city where wwx ends up dying?? when he finally kinda just . snaps after nearly everyone he loves has been killed and all the clans have turned against him and everyone he trusted has basically abandoned him (except for lwj) and he’s just like . laughing humorlessly and crying . god . the pain. it was so well done

- that moment during that jin clan night hunt again but when wwx goes beast mode and simultaneously hits 4 bullseyes blindfolded . nut. holy shit

- that moment after wwx returns from his 3 month burial mounds adventure and he and lwj are kinda not talking and he FINALLY runs after him and lwj goes petty asf and whips out his sword and lowkey fights him for 5 seconds skjfksd god i loved that LMAO

- when jingyi fucking DECIMATES su she with roasts in the demon subdue palace. i love my son

- the morning after lwj got rly drunk w wwx and wwx is like “you just said... you like...” and lwj’s head WHIPS AROUND in a gay PANIC liek Oh FUCK OH FUCK DID I EXPOSEMYSELF??? and then wwx is like “... RABBITS.” and u can visibly see lwj’s whole body relax LOL

- wwx being a little shit right after he’s been reincarnated and also panicking when hanguang jun is mentioned SDFJKD

- when jiang cheng and lan zhan see wuxian step into view when they’re tracking down wen chao and the core melting hand guy and they realize it’s been him killing all these wen clan members with BRUTAL ways sjfkjd fuck i screamed so loud

- when yanli and jiang cheng meet with wuxian after he’s a fugitive to show him yanli’s wedding outfit. i cried a little it was just a beatiful moment

Before he could finish, the sharp pain of flesh being lacerated came from his throat. Something dripped down his neck. Lan WangJi’s face was pale. Jin GuangYao, “How could he not listen to me? Just think about it, Young Master Wei, his life is in my hands.”

(I'M SCREAMING STOP THAT SHIT STOP RIGHT NOW YOU ABSOLUTE TRASH I'M GONNA KILL YOU AND TORTURE YOU SO MUCH-)

Lan WangJi spoke a word at a time, “Do not touch him.”

(lwj passive-aggressive is like water for someone living in the desert, guys, that threatening tone... that speaking a word at a time... *shivers*)

EDIT:

Wei WuXian, however, stopped him, “Lan Zhan! I-I have to tell you something.”

*sobbing* please please please I don't know what for but please-

Jin GuangYao, “Let’s save it for later.”

Wei WuXian, “No. It’s really urgent.”

Jin GuangYao, “Then you can also say it right now.”

It was only an offhand comment, but Wei WuXian seemed as if he realized something, “You’re right.” Right after, Wei WuXian shouted with all he could, “Lan Zhan! Lan WangJi! HanGuang-Jun! Back then, I-I really wanted to sleep with you!”

(OKAY I went from laughing like an idiot ‘cause this jgy-wwx’s interaction are too much for me to bear, to WHAT THE GELL OMG MY BABIES LOOK AT WWX BEING HONEST AND SO CUTE AND WHAT DID HE JUST SAY SIJGO0IEWRJKG)

[...] Jin GuangYao’s hands loosened, and the string fell. As soon as he felt the stinging at his neck disappear, Wei WuXian threw himself at Lan WangJi, unable to wait a second longer.

Lan WangJi’s lips moved. A moment later, he spoke, “You…” He’d always been concise and comprehensive with his words, never pausing at all. But right now, he paused with more hesitance than ever. Another moment later, he continued, “You said…”

he broke him- HE BROKE LWJ- LWJ HAS BEEN B R O K E N

Jin GuangYao turned to Lan XiChen, “ZeWu-Jun, it’s raining. Let’s take shelter in the temple.”

Lan WangJi’s voice suddenly rang beside his ears, “Sit.”

Wei WuXian’s thoughts immediately returned. Lan WangJi gathered four cushions from the temple, giving two to Lan XiChen and Jin Ling and two to Wei WuXian and him. But for some reason, both Lan XiChen and Jin Ling moved their cushions quite far away from them. And coincidentally, they gazed into the distance in unison.

Lwj talks and wwx stops thinking about whatver he was thinking, i am doomed. Lxc and jl are too clever for their own good. Also, I know they can't do much rn, but they are just gonna sit and watch as jgy explains his evil plan? And I WANNA KNOW WHAT THAT MADMAN IS LOOKING FOR

EDIT 6:

Tugging Lan WangJi, Wei WuXian sat down on the cushion. Perhaps because his mind was far off, Lan WangJi’s figure wobbled from the tug before sitting down properly. Wei WuXian calmed himself a bit before gazing at Lan WangJi’s face.

(LWJ WOBBLED. GUYS. GUUUUUUUUUUUYS. LWJ WOBBLED HE IS SO DONE FOR-)

His eyes looked down. Not many emotions could be seen. Wei WuXian knew that with just those words, Lan WangJi probably couldn’t believe him yet. He was tortured by a smiling, oblivious person who knew nothing of his crimes. It was only natural that he didn’t believe it. After he thought so, Wei WuXian felt his chest go heavy. His heart hurt so much it shivered. He didn’t dare think of it any longer, but he knew that he should increase the dose.

(Omg this scene is so pure and delicate and painful. Wwx pls darling say something DON’T TORTURE YOURSELF SO MUCH YOU DIDN’T FREAKING KNOW OKAY just talk-)

He spoke, “Lan Zhan, l-look at me.”

His voice was still a bit tight. Lan WangJi, “Mn.”

After a deep breath, Wei WuXian whispered, “… I really do have a bad memory. I can’t remember a lot of the things that happened in the past, including the time at the Nightless City. I don’t remember a single bit of what happened during those days.”

Hearing this, Lan WangJi’s eyes widened slightly.

If so, then HanGuang-Jun is so unfortunately misunderstood. He’s obviously like this towards everyone. You should be glad you didn’t study at the YunmengJiang Sect, Sect Leader Su.”

Su She’s voice was cold, “Why?”

Wei WuXian, “Or else you would’ve long since been angered to death by me. When I was young, every day I wholehearted believed that I was a prodigy, that I was such a fucking big deal. And not only did I believe it in my heart, I even flaunted it everywhere.”

Veins lined Su She’s forehead, “Shut up!” He seemed as if was about to strike when Lan WangJi pulled Wei WuXian towards his chest, firmly protecting him with his arms. Su She’s movements paused, debating whether or not he should attack.
