So i wrote a ficlet about my kidlaw-got-married-and-divorced-young AU. As said in the notes i do like to headcanon that they get back together in this verse, but much much later, when they’re well in their forties. Partly because i love getting back together stories, partly because i like the idea of amicable divorce to the point that you can stay in each other’s orbit for that long, partly because I like the idea of growing into each other’s perfect person after some time, as the result of a life lived.
Anyway no way i could condense /that/ into a ficlet so here are headcanons about 45yo!kidlaw (getting back together after having been very briefly married in their twenties)
> 45yo!kid is a leather dad but tbf he’s always dressed that way
> 45yo!law is also a leather dad but he aged into it and refuses to admit he might’ve been influenced by kid’s style
> kid’s the type of guy who’d normally have a beard, unfortunately he still can’t grow one
> neither has ever had difficulty getting laid but law was considered the hot one when they were younger whereas kid is particularly popular now, especially with younger gays
> law knows this and is very petty about it
> (kid once dated guy who was like, 26yo, for a couple months and law still talks about that time he was “dating jailbait”. also he sarcastically calls kid “daddy” when he’s being a bitch)
> in general, kid has the ability to stay on good terms with the majority of his exes unless it’s a rly bad breakup (perks of burning through your feelings fast)
> he even has an ex-step kid who still has his phone number and to whom he sends happy bday texts and the like, nothing weird
> law on the other hand is full no-contact with all his exes, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but he still feels envious of kid for having that ability?
> either way they’re both each other’s The Ex. the whole combination of being each other’s first serious relationship / their only marriage / still seeing each other regularly because of their friends. they just kinda see each other as occupying that important niche in their lives
> this said they’re not close friends? they manage to get back to liking each other quickly enough (see ficlet), and stay friends after that, and they see each other like once a month at functions, but they never do stuff just the two of them
> kid is pretty tight with baby tho (law’s sister, in every modern au she’s law’s sister ok) because idk the weapons/machinery stuff they have in common idk how that works out practically irl. they repair motorbikes or something
> and of course luffy and the strawhats kind of glue everyone together into a big chaotic family
> and also i lied about them never doing anything just the two of them because they’ve fucked again a few times. like not a lot, but. fucking your ex is a thing and when you’re both available and wound up at the same party, why not
> and i guess that’s kind of how the reconnecting starts?
> like at first it’s definitely sex-with-the-ex sex, like it happens once every 5 years and it’s nice but at the end it’s “yeah thank god we’re not together anymore, a couple hours with this guy is definitely my limit”
> once they hit 40 tho, they kinda reach a new phase where they like-like each other. like they genuinely start enjoying each other’s company again to the point of wanting to seek it out apart from other people
> it’s kinda hard to articulate why now and not then tbh like obviously the first time they married each other too early before they could be sure they liked each other enough to sustain long term. but they were in love and surrounded by friends and they felt like they’d found their family-for-life and making such an obviously dumb choice felt kinda radical to both of them? and then they started annoying each other 75% of the time way too early ofc. but when they’re older they’re also more settled, more chill, with similar interests, and a lowkey whatever attitude on life on both sides that finally makes them fit together without the friction
> (stuff they now have in common includes both being in the local concert scene, yknow the gigs where the crowd is 80% dads, also now that they both have kids in their circles they find they're both pretty uncle-y. and also kid reads now lol)
> anyway when they reach a point where they’ve seen each other for the third time that week and spent the entire night talking, and two of those times was initiated by them without the excuse of going home together after a thing they were both at, they go yknow what let’s give it a go because now they’re not idiots anymore
> only killer knows for the first couple months. baby would’ve been told if she could be trusted lol
> they’re not exclusive. they weren’t the first time and it didn’t work for them (when they reached the point where they saw other people more than each other bc they didn’t enjoy each other’s company that much anymore after the nnth fight was when it was p clear divorce was on the table) but this time it works as intended. also they find out they like swinging
> they don’t move in with each other either. spend a lot of time at each other’s places but they can afford + like having their own
> after a year or so of low intensity dating and being happy with it they start showing up at functions together
> everyone’s like you know what? this is a good development i dig it. kind of like when they managed to become friends again the first time and everyone was pretty relieved
> both kid and law are happy
> also in love eventually
> presumably 5ever
> they are never EVER ever getting married again

10 Favorite female characters
What? Only 10? Alrighty then…Potential spoilers and rambles. Here we go.
1.Angrboða [Poetic Edda/Norse Mythos]- I don’t know if she counts as a character, but considering she is not a real person that is alive and breathing I’ll add her to the list. I have always found her fascinating and her lack of media presence just fuels me to do more research and gdi I should just write/draw her more, but I can never get her right. And dammit Angrboda deserves, nay demands perfection.  Anyways I feel as though Angrboða doesn’t get enough respect. Grief bringer? Mother of Monsters/Wolves? Hag of Ironwood? Chief?? Yea she’s badass and is worth more than her relationship to Loki(e)…I could go on…
2.Integra Hellsing [Hellsing] - I don’t know man she’s just cool. I wish I could be that cool.
3.Princess Carolyn [Bojack Horseman]- Oh where to begin, this is one of the best female characters I have seen written. PC is at her core the stereotypical “I don’t need a man, I don’t need anybody all I need is my career. Oh no I’m almost 40yrs old and I’m lonely” character, but still the show gives her so much more beyond that. She is working hard to adopt, she genuinely cares about her friends/loved ones and will do anything to help them, when Diane wanted an abortion she was upset that Diane was willingly giving up what she could never have but still at the end of the day didn’t vilify Diane and talked to her (this whole episode btw was amazing and dealt rly well with abortion) I also enjoy Diane as a character and her flaws, most of the female characters are written really well, I’m getting sidetracked here but yea watch Bojack Horseman. Anyways, PC is a strong person (cat?), but we get to see her at her most vulnerable “It's…just…really hard to need people” and her struggles. PC can be pushy and one-sighted and yes her helping people is not completely selfless and in some way it benefits her. Besides wanting children, I never thought I would related to a pink cat wearing a fish dress so hard.
4.Lady Eboshi [Princess Mononoke]- In many ways she is the villain and the main antagonist (I say this bc there are multiple villains) of the movie but I find her interesting in that she is not wholly evil.  Though she is horrible to the environment and the animals/spirits living there she is a fair leader, who has helped the unwanted and worthless of society and gave them work and a home. Her people genuinely love and care for her. Which is another reason I love this movie because it hints at “Humanitarian vs. Environment” Lady Eboshi being the personification of this argument, also Lady Eboshi highlights how one person can do excellent work/relief in one area and be a completely shitty person in another area. Does her bad deeds cancel out all the good she has done? This is a favorite argument of mine, just in a general sense.
5. Evelyn O'Connell [The Mummy]- Come on I made a post specifically about how I wanted to be like Evie when I got older. Super brave and intelligent woman that could read Egyptian( I think she knew multiple other languages as well) studied/worked in Egypt,  got to go on a magical adventure in EGYPT. When I was a kid I was majorly into Ancient Egypt (I haven’t quite outgrown that). I also had a big thing for Lara Croft too and I think that goes hand-in-hand with Evie. But most importantly… “ I AM A LIBRARIAN!”
6. Haruka Tenou [Sailormoon]-  Baby gay [me] was gay way longer than she anticipated. Also...A E S T H E TI C
7. Medea [The Medea]- Countless essays have been written about Medea that would go way deeper into her complexity as a character than what I can do right now. Yea, she’s an interesting character that is by all means not a hero, but it also a victim herself. And one of the few stories from the classics that revolves around a woman, that isn’t two-dimensional.
8.Leslie Knope [Parks&Rec]- I’m going to say it, Leslie knope is the reason that P&R is far superior to the Office even though the writing team is practically the same and the humor at its base is also the same. Leslie Knope is not Michael Scott, Michael is pretty bad (tbf I haven’t finished the series, so we’ll see), But despite Leslie’s many flaws she’s still endearing, hardworking w/ high goals, loves her friends/job and her community. Again, I’m not saying she is perfect because she has such high standards/expectations that she expects everyone to meet her at these impossible heights, often ignores her friends’ advice/complaints even if it’s all with good intentions, can be mean and so forth. Ill admit it, she makes me want to work harder and the character Ron Swanson was great at balancing her out.
9. Rosa Diaz [B99]- Rosa is a cool character with a cooler jacket and I enjoy watching her, I don’t have a deeper reason than that.
10. Anthy Himemiya [Revolutionary Girl Utena]- Anthy is a character that has more questions than answers within the context of her own story. She has done many horrible things and should be held accountable, however, Anthy has been the victim of abuse for years and as a character we must take that in consideration. But where do we draw the line for guilt/personal responsibility? How much physical/emotional abuse can really mess a person up and drive them to these terrible acts? Also, I thought she had the most character growth in the series, which made the ending all the more powerful because of what she went through and the choices she had to make to get there. However, I would literally die for all the women in RGU so…
Bonus: Xena the Warrior Princess, Medusa

MODERN AU : mary, the struggling uni student.
some trigger warnings; there’s talk of racism in here, as well as violence motivated by racism, mentions of ptsd
history.
mary grew up in ullapool, still. middle child to a mexican mother and scottish father, both dairy farmers, growing up running around the highlands and grinning with grass stains on her knees. tbf, the first eleven years of her life aren’t much different in this au, besides the fact that she grew up watching different tv programs and was a ‘90s kid, rather than a ‘60s one.
so let’s talk about mary as a preteen. mary went to a small secondary school in her hometown, where there wasn’t anyone who looked like her besides her sister and brothers. she was clever, though, highly so: an exceptional student, her teachers would say, but she does like to talk. mary was a loud kid, present, maybe even a bit rambunctious.
and she was mostly angry. because this was a small town in scotland, not a big city, and people were quick to judge their only brown classmates. i think in this au, mary would deal a lot more with racism than she did in the wizarding world -- not that it doesn’t exist there, because i think it does. still, hogwarts was a more diverse place, whereas she was one of a handful of students of colour at her school. when she came out the closet as bi at fifteen -- she didn’t know the word pan yet, which she would later use to identify -- things only seemed to get worse. ullapool was traditional, there wasn’t much acceptance concerning sexuality ( her parents struggled with it too, deeply, but didn’t look at her the way some of her classmates did ).
when she is sixteen, mary is jumped when walking home from a friends’ house in the evening. there’s no real reason why, besides bigotry, besides prejudice and racism. maybe it was sparked by something she had said, or tweeted, or shared --- it doesn’t matter. it shouldn’t happen, and still it does. there is no excuse. they’re boys from year 13, a year above her, a bit older, but not at all more mature. they go three against one. mary shatters the bones in her left arm and comes home with a black eye and a bleeding nose.
nothing happens, to the boys. they’re not expelled, because it was near the end of the year, so it’d be a pity to keep them from graduating. they’d be gone in a bit anyway. besides, it didn’t happen on schoolgrounds. her principal throws excuses at her head and she sits there, boiling with rage.
she has nowhere else to go; there’s no schools to transfer to that are nearby enough. and so she keeps going to school, her rage still quietly simmering while she keeps her head down. people sign her cast. she goes to therapy, gets diagnosed with PTSD -- she keeps having flashbacks, keeps hearing their voices, can feel the punches landing still -- and tries to keep moving.
when they move away for university, she feels lighter. not healed, sure, but lighter. her anger finds a place, as she starts writing down her thoughts, she talks about the racism at her school online, because in ullapool no one will listen. people do online. it’s her outlet, her one way of dealing with all this without having to unload it on her family, or worse: friends who don’t get it.
this is where things are very different from wizarding world mary and muggle mary: she doesn’t think a second about joining the law enforcement. that organisation is a hundred times bigger in the UK, and there’s no war, which takes the pressure off --- the motivation is just not there, at all. in stead, she goes to university with high hopes: she wants to change the world, to talk about grating issues, to shed light on the bullshit people are put through because of things not in their control.
she’s majoring in sociology with a minor in media and communication. mary has developed a website/network/organisation (weallbleedred.co.uk). it speaks up against any forms of discrimination  and is supposed to be a place where people can talk about experiences and bond together to oppose discrimination. it’s not as big as she’d like it to be, but it’s growing.
she’d like to do more NGO kind of work, might want to join Amnesty once she graduates and work for them. weallbleedred -- or red, for short -- is important, though, and it’s helping people, and so she’s not going to let it die. mary is idealistic as hell. she speaks up about her experiences, and is determined to make some changes in the world.
she’s getting nearer and nearer to graduation, and she’s excited. she’s also damned tired, because university is what? exhausting. relatable as hell.
modern & muggle stuff.
the reason she’s doing a communication and media minor? she’s fucking in love with social media. mary thinks it’s an amazing way to communicate and it has helped her so much. when she was dealing with the trauma of her attack, there were people there. when she was trying to figure out how sexuality worked, it was there. there were people there from all corners around the world, ready to talk to her, and she loved it.
she also just rly enjoys snapchat filters and scrolling down instagram, especially when procrastinating
has a fair amount of followers, too, due to her website and all
has an android phone, likes getting into android vs apple fights.
she plays football and absolutely loves it. gets really into it, too, will talk about the scottish football league forever with you. her team is ross county!!
watches a lot of documentaries and movies on netflix because she likes them better than tv shows generally? can be woken up for the office and parks and rec any night, though, and does love reality tv. also likes htgawm and dwp.
mary lives in a small, shitty apartment that she shares with four people in glasgow. she hates it, but she loves the city and she loves the campus, so she’s not often found at home, tbh
wants to stay in glasgow, or maybe move to edinburgh --- she likes the highlands, but is also tired of living in a place that’s so conservative and doesnt have starbucks’ everywhere.
is a vegetarian.
cannot drive a car, but can drive a tractor lmao. plans on getting her license eventually!! uses a bike to get most places in glasgow, tbh, or public transport (which she complains about a fair bit)
mostly wears levi’s, converse and loose jumpers or shirts. not a style icon, but there’s an aesthetic there. literally owns like 2 pairs of jeans bc levi’s cost too! damn! much! but she loves them and they were worth it.
works at a tesco and absolutely hates it, but hey! she needs the money.
conclusion.
mary would have gone into therapy, which she did not do in this verse. this definitely helps, it helps a lot. she can deal with her trauma, process it, and that’s something she never really did in this verse. i think that mary ends up less ... messy because of it?
the non-war setting also definitely helps
mary would still have a ruthless side to her, i think? it just works differently in this setting. she’d drag people without hesitation, would write long articles about people on her website, etcetera. mary doesn’t hesitate a lot. less, probably, because there’s less risk.
that’s it. i think???
