The Old Guard x One piece AU got my brain going brrr and i'm gonna make it your problem now. Center of the matter is I want Zoro and Sanji to meet kind of like Nicki and Joe did (discovering their immortality by fighting on opposite sides and killing each other over and over and then becoming eternal lovers) so I went and did some research for the entire Straw hat crew. Main thing is I wanted to link them to historical events that will give them the right motivations and backgrounds! so here we GOOO

Sanji and Zoro: Because Japan has an isolationist past, the only battle I could find that would work is the Cagayan battles of 1582 in Jakarta between Spanish-Philippine forces vs Japanese pirates (a.k.a Wokou, which are basically pirate ronin) Sanji would thus be a reluctant "Rodelero" sent to South East Asia by his noble family (jokes on them he loves being in the middle of the spice trade and he hates being part of a noble family funding the conquistadores) who one day finds himself fighting a mysterious Wokou samurai Zoro. They're partly isolated from their respective camps when they first kill each other, and again, and again, until they realise they should by all means be dead but they keep healing. After a couple decades of -against all odds- running into each other everywhere, they reluctantly decide to try and figure out what the heck's happened to them together- struggling to communicate at first, then learning each others' language over the following decade, then falling in love and becoming inseparable. This makes Zoro and Sanji both over 400 years old, and they are the same age. Zoro learns about so many sword techniques and Sanji about different cuisines/ leg-centric fighting styles during this time.

Robin as an Egyptian scholar who died during the burning of the Library of Alexandria in 48 BC/ was killed for researching something forbidden during the declining years of the Roman Period (early 200s) and found out she was immortal this way, making her around 2 millennia old. She spends her time recording history and traveling the world and encountering new cultures. Her long time enemy is religious obscurantism, and the Catholic church spends a lot of resources trying to kill her. (they have conspiracy boards about this immortal witch in the Vatican)

Brook: so ancient he doesn't remember much, other that he came from Kerma culture (2500 BC), loved music, and that his entire village had died from an illness, but he came back. His memory isn't great but if there's one thing he's loved in his Millennia of existence is discovering and learning how to play all the instruments that he could find. He mostly hangs in Vienna nowadays as a music teacher.

Jinbei is a Samoan chieftain from around 1000 BC who one day died during a battle with a Fijian chieftain. When he came back from death he assumed Tagaloa chose him. He loves navigating, sailing, exploring and going on voyages with his people. In more recent times (post european contact) he was forced to ally with the US Navy to protect his people.

Nami: Irish lass from around 800 who's coastal, tiny village was about to be raided by Vikings from Sweden. She made a deal with their chieftain Arlong to go with them and map out the British isles for them to help their raids be more effective and targeted, in exchange for not killing people in her village, and that she would make back the plunder they did not get from this town for them. She started to join their raids to try and make this money, but she died in battle. She came back and they believed her to be some kind of Valkyrie or Einherjer brought back to midgard. She took over the raider's leadership- also Norsemen always had women handle money, which works great here. During her time as an immortal she travels, seeks treasure, double crosses people etc.

Usopp a young double agent/CIA spy from the Cold War who died on a mission. He tragically could not return to his love Kaya because he was afraid of putting her in danger by revealing he was alive to the spies that killed him. He relocates and starts anew constantly, his entire life a web of lies. He's a great marksman/sniper.

Chopper died young of the Bubonic plague in medieval Europe. He resuscitated, tragically his father is infected as well and he's unable to save him- motivating him to get to the bottom of this disease, he decides to become a doctor. Looking like a 15 year old for centuries doesn't make this task easy and he has to hide a lot.

Franky is an American veteran of WWI who was heavily disfigured first, and died later (which is why he's not fully healed and needs prosthetics). He's heavily anti-government from having been sent to fight in such a meaningless war that sacrificed young men like cannon fodder. He learned to fix himself up and make prosthetics and masks for veterans, got into making tech stuff

Luffy is a modern, 21st century 20 something year old from Brazil's favelas. He dies in a gun violence incident (maybe linked to a drug war/gang war where he's been trying to protect his neighbourhood) and comes back, experiencing visions of others like him. He's resolute to find them and make a crew, thinking that with all of them together, maybe they can help liberate the world from opressors and inequality

im sure its been said already but as the election draws near more and more liberals will come out of the woodwork to shame people with a conscience to give away their vote to the democrats for free. i'm already seeing posts saying "why aren't people more concerned about a trump presidency?" you want to know why? it's because people already know he's bad. everyone already knows what he is and what he's done and what he'll do. there's nothing to discuss. he's a racist despotic worm of a man. there's nothing else to say.

biden is currently president. the genocide is happening under his watch. he's the one funding isra*l and arming them; he's sidestepped congress more than once to give them weapons. by oct. 27, the biden administration already knew that "Israel was regularly bombing buildings without solid intelligence that they were legitimate military targets." the state department/biden have engaged in atrocity propaganda, cast doubt on the legitimacy of the death toll recorded by the gaza health ministry, and so on. the united states is currently in the process of trying to pin the "war in gaza" on netanyahu (see sen. schumer's speech) after months of backing blatant genocide as a means to act as if they're "doing something" about the genocide (Instead of, say, threatening to cut off all aid to israel with the condition that all hostilities in gaza, the west bank, and occupied jerusalem are halted immediately and permanently, allowing palestinians freedom to travel, allowing aid into gaza, etc etc etc.)

the long and short of it is that liberals view their own lives as being worth more than palestinians'. that's it. they'll vote for another 4 years of the guy ushering in genocide and supporting apartheid + settler colonialism because he isn't outright attacking them (despite various laws and rulings happening both at the supreme court level and at the local level all over the country that will endanger people). they'll settle for the illusion of safety and security and shame anyone with a conscience and accuse them of "supporting the republicans" when in an actual democracy you would be able to use your vote as leverage to extract concessions from those who want to be elected. that's how it's supposed to fucking work.

democrats are not owed people's vote. if biden loses, it will be biden's fault; it will be his campaign's fault; it will be the democrats' fault. trump is bad; the republicans are bad. we already know this. this is not an endorsement of either. but if democrats are too cowardly and feckless and servile to the motivations of the american empire and never do anything for their constituents then why the fuck should anyone vote for them. you want to get mad at someone, why don't you do something useful and stop worrying about team-sports with a purely selfish basis and start hounding the people in power who are supposed to serve you, the voter.

Artists creating specifically to sell and trading off (some of) their own style to do it, activists begging for attention and shares and media coverage because they aren't being paid enough attention, UNWRA desperate for donations, the percentage of people who don't mask in 2024 compared to deaths and disabilities, ppl who need to be convinced to vote with principles that save lives and that genocide is unacceptable, how a living wage or UBI is believed to be "unrealistic" despite the trillions in shareholder investment accounts.

....I'm starting to think Mainstream People™ fucking suck, ngl. In fact, dare I say that Mainstream People are the biggest obstacle to progress now.

Malcolm X said it was the white liberal as did a lot of other revolutionaries and thinkers.

I, however, think anyone who can hold their own comfort over someone else's suffering is the problem.

Why are the rest of us constantly begging and shouting and changing ourselves and our bodies in an effort to make them care about us? To make them see us? To give us rights? To bless us with the support needed to make a living?

Same shit, different generations. And idk about y'all, but I would love to be the last generations who ever had to hate themselves to survive.

to be quite honest i'm not entirely over having my teenage body scrutinized and deemed overly scandalous and inappropriate at various times by insane staff and faculty in evangelical high school for existing in leggings or a dress. just things i'm thinking upon and getting enraged over this nye. imagine having a normal body image

#couldn't wear leggings or tight pants in the cult school and once was pulled aside by a male teacher who told me my shirt was too low #(the shirt had literally been given to me by the dorm dean) full offense but i hope he dies painfully #and then at the next (liberal by adventist standards) school had dress check every fri night and sat morning to go to mandatory church #in last two years had a fully evil head dean who pulled me aside on my way to sunday breakfast to look at my ass and tell me no one wanted #to see that and when we had (also mandatory) 'banquets' instead of prom she told me at the (mandatory) dress precheck that the dress i #borrowed was too tight around the armpits (?) and i needed to fix it (i just hiked it up higher when i had to walk past her to leave and #she didnt notice) i dont even remember what kind of dress it was #this woman was so cartoonishly evil. people whose skin i would rip off and burn in front of them #also if i were skinny u know none of these evil motherfuckers would have looked twice #i literally will never be able to afford enough therapy to fix the damage these people + my mother did to my self image....anyway #oh plus purity culture..........wow its crazy how my eating habits are abnormal idk why #i hate adventists sm #wait im not done. this woman also put up a sign on the front doors of the dorm about how us girls have to 'protect the men of our campus'#by not wearing leggings etc. die in a fire. ok im done #me #ed tw #(?) just in case #ex sda

I'm tired of seeing "but Joe Biden is our only chance and if you don't vote for him—" I'm tired. I'm so tired. I'm tired of bearing witness to the crimes America has done over and over to so many places and people. I'm tired of the ways they try to crush us under their boots. I'm tired of the illusions of choice. I'm tired of trying to make it in this world as a black femme. I'm so tired. And I'm not near as tired as my family and my friends' families trying to survive in Haiti. I'm not nearly as tired as those suffering in Congo to provide the very devices that we're all using. I'm not nearly as tired as the journalists in Gaza who get on the internet when they can to report the genocide around them. I'm tired for them, and if the weight of it all is breaking my heart from the pressure, I can't imagine it for them. What can even an atom of compassion mean? And every day those people in power get up on their podiums all spick and span and look into the eyes of the millions watching them and go

"Keep killing them"

"We want these people tortured and suffering"

And I'm supposed to act like none of this is happening?? Because this guy wearing one color says he's not bad like the guy wearing red and vice versa??? People are fighting, have been fighting, and continue to fight for their liberation and human rights. Yet these handfuls of people, those who's greed and lack of humanity, go "But we don't want them to."

For years. For decades. Centuries even.

All they have to do is stop. Stop. And they don't. They won't. And I'm supposed to suck it up because one seems better than the other, rather than the truth that none every ACTUALLY have ALL of our best interests to heart. None. But I'm supposed to settle. Because that's all I'm supposed to do as an American. Settle. I'm so tired.

boomers n X'ers are mad that millennials Gen Z have woken up to all the child abusive norms in our society and we no longer give our parents respect just because they're our parents and teh bibble says so.

We also woke up to the fact that their politically passive and materialistic youth, where they took out a bunch of cheap usury loans and did nothing to stand up against central banking, has destroyed the economy for future generations. they have the audacity to call us lazy conspiracy theorists and essentially gaslight us for noticing such things.

A friend once told me she thinks that boomers and gen X are competing with their kids in this weird gross game to prove they're more successful and better, and I have to agree. They show no empathy for their own children's suffering, it's a generation full of casual and normalized narcissistic personality. I think this is a direct consequence of their culture which didn't encourage them to question their parents and see the humiliation and abuse they faced as children for what it is, unlike our culture today does. They actually believed that parents had kids out of virtue and selflessness and that the kids were obligated to repay the parents, not the other way around.

I notice a lack of individuation from the parents in most of Boomer and Gen X individuals. a "children must obey their parents" mentality. or... replace "obey" with "please" or "impress". Anyone with this mentality is primed for the narcissism demon. They will feel the constant need to prove themselves to the parents, to prove that they're successful and more worthy of praise, because in their eyes the parents can do no wrong and it is always their fault if the parent is abusing them or neglecting them. Then they project this gross mentality onto their children.

#Realizing I didn't have to obey was one step to liberation #Realizing I dont even have to please or impress or make them think anything good of me ever... is the final step #It's your job to adapt to the individual your child is #Provided they're not a monster who's hurting anyone #It's not their job to impress you and mold themselves to be something you'd like to see #Parenting is a chance for spiritual growth cuz it forces you to accept things as they are instead of how you want them to be #You must tell the difference between what is in ur power to change and what isn't #Otherwise you will cause great harm to your child #And you must expand your tolerance of diversity #Cuz your child could be anything ... Many such things which are not to ur tastes and which would trigger u as a small minded individual #Only ppl with expanded perceptions can be good parents.#Ie people who understand “conspiracies” and the importance of risk taking and don't flip out and Worry that their child is emo #And have a life outside of being a worrying parent to keep u going if ur child runs away or dies #Cuz there also comes a point in ur child's development where #(usually around 18+)#If ur giving them grief about their choices to risk death... for the reason that You don't want to see them hurt or killed #U are selfishly stifling their individuation process #For most older parents it's not about the kid's feelings and the kid's individuation #it's about me me me my feelings my fears my comfort my hysterical reactions #Regardless of how they hurt my child with said hysterias #Anyway .

#I have been working nonstop all I do is fucking go to work all I do is work and I have one small period of time off and I can’t even spend #it the way I want. I can’t even spend it with people I love or spend it relaxing. I have to go see fucking extended family #who btw I see all the fucking time #like I don’t want to. I can’t stand extended family especially around the holidays. I would rather die #and it’s not a break from work if it’s gonna be more energy intensive around them than it is when I’m actually at work!!!#I don’t get any days off!!!! I was thinking I'd probably see one of you! You're wrong :) Let's review the history a bit, shall we?

In this case, what we're talking about is the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, or in English, The Institute of Sexology. This Institute was founded and headed by a gay Jewish sexologist named Magnus Hirschfeld. It was founded in July of 1919 as the first sexology research clinic in the world, and was run as a private, non-profit clinic. Hirschfeld and the researchers who worked there would give out consultations, medical advice, and even treatments for free to their poorer clientele, as well as give thousands of lectures and build a unique library full of books on gender, sexuality, and eroticism. Of course, being a gay man, Hirschfeld focused a lot on the gay community and proving that homosexuality was natural and could not be "cured".

Hirschfeld was unique in his time because he believed that nobody's gender was either one or the other. Rather, he contended that everyone is a mixture of both male and female, with every individual having their own unique mix of traits.

This leads into the Institute's work with transgender patients. Hirschfeld was actually the one to coin the term "transsexual" in 1923, though this word didn't become popular phrasing until 30 years later when Harry Benjamin began expanding his research (I'll just be shortening it to trans for this brief overview.) For the Institute, their revolutionary work with gay men eventually began to attract other members of the LGBTA+, including of course trans people.

Contrary to what Anon says, sex reassignment surgery was first tested in 1912. It'd already being used on humans throughout Europe during the 1920's by the time a doctor at the Institute named Ludwig Levy-Lenz began performing it on patients in 1931. Hirschfeld was at first opposed, but he came around quickly because it lowered the rate of suicide among their trans patients. Not only was reassignment performed at the Institute, but both facial feminization and facial masculization surgery were also done.

The Institute employed some of these patients, gave them therapy to help with other issues, even gave some of the mentioned surgeries for free to this who could not afford it! They spoke out on their behalf to the public, even getting Berlin police to help them create "transvestite passes" to allow people to dress however they wanted without the threat of being arrested. They worked together to fight the law, including trying to strike down Paragraph 175, which made it illegal to be homosexual. The picture below is from their holiday party, Magnus Hirschfeld being the gentleman on the right with the fabulous mustache. Many of the other people in this photo are transgender.

There was always push back against the Institute, especially from conservatives who saw all of this as a bad thing. But conservatism can't stop progress without destroying it. They weren't willing to go that far for a good while. It all ended in March of 1933, when a new Chancellor was elected. The Nazis did not like homosexuals for several reasons. Chief among them, we break the boundaries of "normal" society. Shortly after the election, on May 6th, the book burnings began. The Jewish, gay, and obviously liberal Magnus Hirschfeld and his library of boundary-breaking literature was one of the very first targets. Thankfully, Hirschfeld was spared by virtue of being in Paris at the time (he would die in 1935, before the Nazis were able to invade France). His library wasn't so lucky.

This famous picture of the book burnings was taken after the Institute of Sexology had been raided. That's their books. Literature on so much about sexuality, eroticism, and gender, yes including their new work on trans people. This is the trans community's Alexandria. We're incredibly lucky that enough of it survived for Harry Benjamin and everyone who came after him was able to build on the Institute's work.

As the Holocaust went on, the homosexuals of Germany became a targeted group. This did include transgender people, no matter what you say. To deny this reality is Holocaust denial. JK Rowling and everyone else who tries to pretend like this isn't reality is participating in that evil. You're agreeing with the Nazis.

#i hate q slur discourse so im gonna vent about it here instead of commenting #but i do kind of hate how queer is used so universally as ~queer theory~ or ~queer lit~ or whatever #a) it isnt inclusive. reclamation is a complicated and personal process and its kind of unfair to hoist that on everyone #b) even when slurs are reclaimed like. it still feels weird to have them be used in the NYT #and in academia and shit #its also really intetesting be the 'reclamation' is more spatial than temporal #like at the same time my university offered queer history courses #i heard someone say 'ive never seen one of those queers. they know better than to come around here'#its not that im opposed to its reclamation or use #but it feels soooooooo disingenuous to act like reclamation is a finished process and it feels like #to have it be used to advertise shitty YA lit to me #is just an insult. y'know? and academics that go 'queer just means difference or deviation from the norm!'#instead of a word people use to enforce SPECIFIC rules about who can perform femininity and when and how #like when i hear the word i think of a) the shitty conservatives from my hometown #b) academics whose theories i either find vastly overrated or horrifically misinterpreted #or c) seattle liberals whose experience of ~queerness~ is so vastly different than mine i sometimes wonder if we speak the same language #its a word that should be reclaimed by screaming and writing it on my arms at a protest #not by like. having spotify use it as a podcast category
