Netflix, I don’t know how to tell you this but a woman doesn’t have to be self taught to be a strong female character. It’s ok to let her know her limitation and ask for help. It’s ok to let her get angry, it’s ok to let her be jealous, it’s ok to let your female character have flaws and WORK on them. Your female character doesn’t have to become a master on her own to be memorable, it just makes her accomplishment feel unearned.

doodles and some lore. I'm tired.
#Jay does this thing on second dates where he tests the other person#he wants to make sure they'd like all of him. every part of him that may throw others off or realize he's insane#Matt and Jay were friends during high school. dated in college and broke up just before finding out Jay was pregnant#they decided to co-parent Mona and just view one another as friends#Mona really likes Don and Tk. loves Peter. though dislikes Lucy quite a bit because of how much she hears Jay complain about her with Matt#Mona is very close with Jay despite living with Matt and only coming over to Jay during the holidays/some weekends#Jay moved into the complex about a year prior to meeting Peter. he's had 5 roommates since moving in#Lucy has been the worst compared to the rest but is the only one Jay tolerates (since she's young and reminds him of himself. pretransition#Jay and Don hated each other in the beginning. only really bonded over talking shit about a neighbor#and Jay saying “anyway I gotta finish watching the game.” Don saying how he wanted to too but his tv is fucked so they watch together#Tk does have feelings for Jay but Jay just can't take the hint. he simply just thinks he's making jokes and is very kind#Jay really cares about Lucy. he often checks up on her when she's out and buys her dinner if he didn't make anything for them#and she ofc tries to make his life easier by cleaning the apartment making him coffee in the mornings etc etc#also Jay and Don sometimes just talk about marriage. how both of theirs didn't work out (I headcanon that for Don)#how it'd go - Don: I just wish I showed her how much I cared... Jay: I chased mine down with a knife. didn't kill her though. I promise.#Jay also calls Don's kid (the cop) Don Jr. he doesn't mind it that much. it's mainly cause Jay never remembers his name#my art#yb peter#Yb don#Void#Jay#Yb tk#Yb lucy#none of them die btw. Peter kills some guy who treated Jay poorly#the entirety of Jay and Peter's relationship before the abduction takes place over June#I say so cause it was a bit alarming to Tk. Don and Matt how fast Jay was rushing into the relationship and such#anyway uhh idk what else to say

a concept: Lockwood was as jealous of the Skull as Lucy was of Holly during The Hollow Boy
#lockwood and co#lockwood & co#locklyle#anthony lockwood#lucy carlyle#this is not actually a lockwood and co blog#I say as I rush to post something after once again deciding to reread#but anyway perhaps it's something a bit more complex than jealousy#a cocktail of emotions at knowing lucy was getting drawn more toward the side of the dead than the living#there's that added layer of the tv series in that in the first season lucy helps him with his recklessness#and now she's the one engaging in that sort of behavior in THB#but the thing is the nature of their recklessness if different in that#lockwood's is reckless because of his unresolved issues#while lucy becomes reckless because she wants to help the dead she can speak to#which again must complicate things for lockwood#because those that lucy sees as victims#lockwood just sees as evil causes of his sister's death#their talents play into this to#because lucy can hear them she can empathize with them#because lockwood doesn't hear them well or at and because of his exceptional sight#he only sees the ugliest of the Visitors and it's easy for him to forget they were once alive#so there's that 'jealousy' that lucy is spending more on more time on the entities who killed his sister#which causes her to put her own life in more danger as a result#resulting in lockwood getting angrier at her especially when he thinks she's missing the point by focusing on holly#and it's just a never ending cycle of them being angry at each other without fully understanding the other person's reasons#and irony of ironies#when (not if) we get a season 2#lockwood will feel the full force of what lucy felt this season because of his jump of a cliff tendencies#books#tv

i feel like we are in the middle of a huge cultural conversation surrounding the reality of child exploitation in the entertainment industry.. so it’s funny,,,, when taylor swift describes very clear child exploitation that she very much did experience in one of her songs everyone is taking it super literally… and assuming that she’s referring to her family’s little christmas tree farm as an asylum and we’re laughing and calling her silly

It's fucking wild to see someone defend Mei Mei and demand people to blame Gege instead for her pedophilia and grooming.
WTF?
If you love a dark character, then accept everything that they are in the story. Mei Mei is one. She is a side character that is dark despite being on the heroes' side of the fight.
I appreciate what Gege had done to her character. I like it because thru her we see how rotten the modern jujutsu society is - that the heroes' side is not exactly great especially with the likes of Gojo and Nanami being gone.
A lot of people already pointed out that Mei is used as a foil for Nanami. I agree. She is everything he is not: - Nanami left stock trading. Mei is doing insider trading. - Nanami fights for the greater good. Mei is only in it for the paycheck. - Nanami protects children. Mei exploits children. - Nanami continues to fight even if he is half-dead. Mei retreats even if she is still perfectly fine. - Nanami has morals. Mei is immoral.
But why did someone good (Nanami) die a horrible death while someone bad (Mei Mei) got rewarded (practically highlighted with her escaping to Malaysia -which was Nanami's dream retirement place)? It's to highlight how broken and bleak jujutsu society is - bad people benefit but good people suffer. It also shows how the only difference between the sorcerers (sans our "heroes") and the curse users are just rule compliance and pay checks.
Speaking of which:
What Mei Mei is doing to Ui Ui is exactly like what that Granny Seance did to her Tojified Grandson. Both women are grooming boys younger than they into perfect tools to complement their CTs. They don't see them as brother or grandson respectively. Those words are mere "titles". It's like how you would call an giant axe "Axe" and straw dolls "Dolls."
Mei is the perfect example of what a peak sorcerer is in modern jujutsu society - strong and smart but selfish, self-absorbed, exploitative, and immoral.
I like Mei for what she delivers in the story: 1) A very dark character that represents the rotten core of the jujutsu society. 2) A complex female character - she is on your side but she is definitely not an ally you'd want. However, you need all the help you can get so you are forced to accept her but deep down you want her to get some comeuppance for all she's been doing. 3) Despite her... Mei-ness, she still has a really cool character design and powers as well as really badass scenes. 4) An excellent foil to Nanami (and maybe even Gojo if I stretch it a bit). 5) A great reminder that with the exception of the sorcerers within Gojo's close circle (Tokyo Tech staff/alumni + Utahime & her students), sorcerers are absolute scumbags. Mei's principle is pretty similar to Sukuna's! They're all about: Me, Myself, and I living it up and having fun at everyone's expense.
6) She is the closest I could get to a "villainess" in JJK. The villains in JJK is male-dominated with 2 gender-neutrals (Hanami + Uraume). Geto's family has very little screen time for me to get something out of them (Lady Secretary, Nanako & Mimiko). Yeah it's shonen but still... Gege is starving me with good villainesses 😭.
So TLDR: Mei Mei is not defensible but feel free to like/love her anyway. Being a fan of villains or dark characters is not a representation of a person's morals after all. Do not blame Gege for using her as a narrative tool to remind people again ( because we have to admit that we always kinda forget): the world of JJK is unfair and it really fucking sucks being a nice person there. Not that Gege is a perfect writer at all. There are plenty of other stuff to be angry about in his work like the pacing for example or the underutilization of interesting side characters or the story being so "scattered" into various mediums.

The Hulme poem reminds me of when my family was going through my late grandmother's belongings, which included a few marked up Bibles due to her having been devoutly religious in her personal life and in her involvement with the Church. The annotation I will never forget was on the famous Leviticus 18:22 section. She simply had written, "Love beats Leviticus".

my biggest problem with a people’s history of the french revolution by eric hazan is that he keeps like. implying that lafayette defected to the enemy (meaning Austria and Prussia), but like. mf was immediately arrested bc he was seen as the cause of the revolution. the only people who saw him as a conservative were in france
#marquis de lafayette#lafayette#lowkey feel like the french revolution has so many figures who are misrepresented by people bc they were more conservative/liberal#like robespierre got the same treatment as lafayette but like reversed#i feel like the american revolution wasn’t so controversial as to have the same effect#and on top of that people have been working since it happened to counter balance whenever that happened#obviously some figures are still glorified but like there’s always been a lot of historians treating them as less one dimensional#but based off the books i’ve read about the frev at least one party is portrayed as one dimensional#and they’re always the villain too#like no one in the frev is overglorified GWKWBWKWN#they’re either a complex person or a one dimensional villain#like hazan shows different elements of robespierre’s character but doesn’t do the same to lafayette#the last author i read (forgor her name lol) showed all parts of marie antoinette and king louis’ characters#she did touch on robespierre a little bit showing his qualities but she didn’t go in depth on any of the revolutionaries really#but like brissot and co were portrayed as just bad guys who never did anything good ever#idk im just kinda used to authors at least attempting to show good and bad#even if its just ‘one time he helped an old lady cross the street and then he slaughtered someone’s entire family’#no hate to hazan tho this book is awesome#i just wish it wasn’t trying to push such a black and white narrative in this particular instance#for the most part he doesn’t do it with anything else#but tbf i did start reading this bc i needed a more leftist sympathetic book to counteract the strongly royalist one i read before#imma tag this as#books#and#resources#in case anyone wants my thoughts on this book#this rant was longer than anticipated HEKWHWJ

stereotypical barbie spends the film defining herself by what she is not; she's not intelligent like the barbies that win nobel prizes or a leader like the barbie that's president. she's exceptional, like all the barbies, but only to the extent that she is really, really traditionally attractive. her job isn't to make plans or to make changes, it's just to Be A Pretty Object. because it's all she's known and because being a pretty object and nothing else has secured her place in society, she thinks she wants that!
the whole movie is barbie learning that actually, she wants to be more than a pretty object! she doesn't want to just be a Platonic Ideal Of Acceptable Kinds Of Beauty. she wants to age! she wants to have ideas, not be one! she wants to be a person, not just a beautiful woman.
i get why barbie collectors or hyperfem people wanted her to stay a pretty, hyperfem, traditionally attractive barbie and nothing else. i love a lot about that kind of aesthetic! i love my dressed up dolls! but the idea that there's any satisfying end to the movie where greta gerwig pats stereotypical barbie (and therefor the audience) on the back and says, "just stay a pretty object. that's great!" is kind of nuts to me. greta gerwig was never going to make that kind of movie

The thing about armchair diagnosing cis people as trans is that if you accept that everyone's understanding of gender is deeply personal and that you shouldn't tell someone they're not trans or not trans in the right way, you should also accept that you can't tell someone they are trans or that they're not cis in the right way. Or that they have to either identify as trans or cis.
These are all just words and there's never any excuse to argue with someone over who they are.
I don't think most people are genuinely trying to overrule the 'cis in a gnc way' perspective but even being flippant about it is not helpful. Also I think cis people talking about gender in complex and fun ways is very cool.
#everyone is allowed to have their own gender#it's not like 'trans people get to do whatever they want and cis are boring and default'#cis just means you generally identify with the gender you were assigned or don't strongly identify with something else#not that you never think about what gender means to you or that you think you're a woman BECAUSE you have a certain body#everyone is capable of understanding the difference between sex and societal gender roles and gender identity#if we try to say that only trans people have this forbidden knowledge that's just another way of alienating ourselves#and suppressing discussion of gender#gender things#anyway i said this bc i was watching a video essay about transness in horror#and she talked about a mangaka who writes trans narratives and has this really complex relationship with his own gender#but doesn't openly identify as trans#and i think we will lose a lot of interesting stories and people if we tell cis people to either be quiet about gender identity or be trans#and i know it's like. 'no one's telling them to shut up they're the majority'#yeah yeah but like. being cis is such an ephemeral state of being#you could just as easily not be cis within a moment#so it makes no sense to me to act like every cos person individually is An Oppressor#they're literally not they're just other people under the same stupid capitalist imperialist society as us#that wants them to be stuffed into tiny marketable boxes just as much as it wants us to be#so not they're not an elevated class and they're not barred from the table#the reason we have community is for support and understanding but some cis people support and understand us and some trans people don't#everything has nuance#anyway i want to engage less with labels and more with people and let them tell me who they are
