Partly for the prolific volume of projects artists release each year and partly for the fluid definition of an album (running anywhere from three to 13 tracks), an annual ranking of K-pop albums is never easy. As South Korea continues to extend its global musical influence, certain projects transcend hit-song compilations, presenting larger visions and conceptual narratives.
In 2023, stars like V, WOODZ and ONEW used their latest solo projects to share the music that inspires them at their core as artists and let listeners settle into sonic worlds they’ve developed.

First Place: Onew, Circle The First Album
Tumblr media
While it’s somewhat criminal to think that 15 years after ONEW’s debut with SHINee in 2008 we only just received his first full Korean album, the singer-songwriter himself would say that now was the perfect time for Circle. A musical journey unlike anything released this year, ONEW shared that he had attempted to record the album’s title track before dropping his Dice EP in early 2022, but felt it wasn’t at the level of perfection it deserved and held onto the song. ONEW then involved himself in every aspect of Circle‘s production process, from meticulous mixing and mastering to tuning, beats, recording and mastering, attesting to the singer-songwriter’s dedication to artistic expression.
The single “O (Circle)” opens the album with an intriguing blend of electronica and strings, while its gospel-tinged chorus emphasizes lyrics about the circular nature of life and how memories, feelings and dreams are all fleeting. The 10 tracks on Circle develop unique transformations from start to finish: the breezy melodies in “Cough” are paired with loneliness-themed lyrics and a melancholy instrumental breakdown, while “Rain on Me” starts with aggressive acoustic guitar strumming before transitioning into an atmospheric, percussive ballad. Sweet surprises abound, too: ONEW scats on the jazz-rap hybrid “Caramel” and gives a glimpse into his indie-rock side on “Parachute.”
The album’s effortless flow is anchored by ONEW’s famously solid yet understated vocals. As Circle concludes with the tender piano ballad “Always” which addresses themes of loyalty and resilience, the listener wonders if it’s an allegory for ONEW’s public journey through health challenges, including vocal cord surgery. Even without any writing credits on Circle, ONEW’s presence is undeniably felt in this seamless collection that boasts an emotional depth brought on by 15 years in the game. That’s the kind of introspection you can’t rush or doctor through A&R but need to cycle through and arrive at when the moment is right. From scheduling this album’s release to the messages on the final track, time is definitely on ONEW’s side to deliver such a project. — J.B.

In addition, Minho showed a variety of performances across the spectrum through dramas such as tvN's ‘The Most Beautiful Goodbye’ and Netflix series ‘The Fabulous’, as well as movies 'Inrang' and ‘Jangsari: Forgotten Heroes’. In December last year, he released his first mini-album ‘CHASE’ filled with hip-hop and R&B genres with his own emotions, filling the last puzzle piece of SHINee's solo album. K-pop ‘ACE’ Taemin Taemin announced his solo debut as the first member of SHINee with his first mini-album ‘ACE’ in 2014. With the hit songs ‘MOVE’ and ‘WANT’, he caused the so-called ‘Move’ and 'WANT' syndrome and won awards in the album and best dance performance solo categories at various awards ceremonies. In addition, Taemin is loved by fans all over the world for his excellent vocals and powerful performance skills, as he has various modifiers such as 'Yeoksolnam (all-time solo male singer)' and 'Taemdol (Taemin is also a role model)'. He has established himself as an irrefutable "ACE" of K-pop by proving his powerful global power by successfully completing his first arena tour 17 times in six cities across Japan in 2019.

Taemin leaving SM; a retrospective rant from a severely uneducated and overly caffeinated fan.
I have thoughts about Taemin leaving SM and by extention Onew too. Might as well drag Minho and Key into this.
Since this is majorly about Taemin, let's talk about him first.
Taemin & SM (pre-NGDA era)
Taemin has been with the company for 16 years, closer to 19 if you count his trainee days. As an older shawol (LLO-era, got me whipped BAD), it was seriously out of the blue that Taemin would be the first to debut solo. SM at the time (i.e in their prime) was a vocal powerhouse and I genuinely thought Jonghyun would be the first one to go solo. SM made the right decision dedicating time and resources in letting him shine and 'Ace' was a phenomenal debut album for Taemin and really stamped that 'Taemin vibe/sound' we all know and love' Generally speaking SM not the best for promotions/scheduling, but the company still had their shit together when 'Move' came out, it felt like it was everywhere and surpassed the noteriety Guilty had achieved. I feel like when Taemin does variety shows, up to now, Move was always the most referenced and remembered act, even amongst the junior idols, that he did and thats because SM did go hard on promoting that song and picked a quiet month to do that comback in.
Taemin vs SM (during/post-NGDA era)
Somewhere along the lines, SM really dropped the ball with promoting Act 1 especially during Taemin's 'Criminal' comeback. They heavily prioritized their newer groups and suddenly their legendary acts were getting shafted with poor promotions and what felt like less dedicated management and resources. I recall, SM postponed the release for Criminal, squashed Taemin in Super-M activties and focused on their new acts while simultaneously over working them (honestly Mark has had such a hectic few years). My internal speculation/assumtion is that, SM figured that acts like SuJu, EXO, SHINee, GG and RV and solo/ duo units, wouldn't need as much dedicated promotions because they are iconic acts and they are fully dependant on fanbases to generate the buzz. Which leads me to my main hypothesis that after a few years of being active, SM really does not care about an artist anymore. Mind you artists that put them on the fucking map to begin with. SM won't double down on these artists because they believe they can't appeal to a younger audience. With the shitshow that was the Criminal promotions. SM really didn't do any better with 'Advice'. Pinning aespa's comeback a day before was a low blow instead of focusing on the talent that's about to go into the military, if they are aware enough to give Taemin a mini comeback so his relevancy sticks throughout his service, why damage it with an aespa release (that felt like it was to tactically avoid facing off the BTS release later than month) and basically doing NOTHING bar announcing pre-orders. Then we enter the 'Guilty' era. Which as we saw was a hit, but mainly because SM capitalized on the power of social media trends, placing Taemin in VARIOUS online contents and slowly dropped related media during winter. I mean we are still not over his 'Guilty' era, the Metamorph concert still has us at a chokehold. I 'd like to think that Taemin became more vocal in what he wanted and expected out of SM when he came back. Obviously the priority to them is/was SHINee and that's fair. DCM did really well with promos (althoughlike most shawols would say, LSM did have a major part to play with that). HOWEVER it was their 15th anniversary comeback last year and I feel like SM treated it like it was just another comeback instead of a major milestone. There were no interviews or press releases for Hard, when events were happening, it felt like it was gate kept to just local fans, like it made me feel like I was living under a rock because it was so last minute and I was not aware of anything. I want to believe that just because SM did an okay job now, excuses them for the last 3 years. What's worse is it's undeniable, Taemin lives to perform and it's no secret he sets some high goals and standard for himself and probably the toll 1) not getting to preform Guilty in GDA, despite wanting to and 2) probably not getting a solid backing for touring globally, despite very vocal fan support. I am not sure if anyone saw that SM forecast for the first two quarters of 2024, but it genuinely feels like Taemin knows that him and SHINee will not be a priority after promotions are finished. I hope I am not dense enough to assume that obviously SHINee has spoken about this privately and internally for a while now. It's really something you can't avoid talking about. Taemin has spoken to his hyungs, people in his circle inside and outside of the industry. Hopefully he is well informed and supported and it seems definite that SHINee is still active as a group.
Key vs SM.
Someone has already mentioned it but if anyone was leaving SM for creative freedom, I genuinely thought it would be Key. 'Bad Love' was an amazing release and Key fought with SM to release with his own brand/aesthetic. Because Taemin's imminent departure is so publicized, SM might be keeping the talks with Minho and Key super under wraps and trying to offer a btter deal. Although recently, bar Good and Great, SM has been using Key as a 'Variety' idol than an actual singer, which sucks because Key is super talented and if SM doesn't recognize that star power now, good luck to them. Also apparently, Kany is signed with BPM? I know she is close with SHInee in general, but I would assume it'd be Key joining her ya'know?
Minho vs SM.
Imma put it out there, the promotions for 'Stay for a Night' was lackluster? I feel like they treat solo Minho and SHINee Minho as two separate entities. Like yes there is a dualism of being a group preformer vs solo preformer. But on the rare occasion SHINee does get promoted Minho seems to get more attention, but as a solo artist, I don't feel the same love for his solo promotions. I hope Minho gets to write and contribute more, which I believe he does in the background. If he does stick to SM, I pray they open other avenues of artistry, primarily, he does really well with his acting roles and yes it really helps that he does fit the 'K-drama ML' look.
Onew vs SM
I feel like Onew gets the short-end of the stick out of the rest of SHINee, never mind that the man has the voice of an angel, but again, he is another one that SM never bothered to market right. It kind of make sense that he would want to leave the company and seek ones that would expand his career inside and outside of singing and while the one good thing SM did recently is make sure Onew was healing and taking care of himself, recent SHINee promo activities feels like they are treating Onew's break as a hush hush 'taboo topic' Honestly, bring back the era where our idols would randomly disappear during promotions because they were casted to be on-stage again. I am still forever clinging onto Onew singing opera, because despite him not being trained for that, he has the talent to do so. It'd be nice to hear him produce his own music, or give acting another shot.

hellooo today's reminder is what a DAY first thing i saw was jinki is back after nearly a full year (i am in Tears about how many friends behind the scenes in the industry banded together to make him his artistic safe space) and he is BEAUTIFUL his hair is long and he is being adorable in a video and he kept onew rights but the video caption said "jinki" and are you aware he's my absolute darling sunshine angel and i love him so very much. also doyoung is releasing a full length album. which i saw coming, my hypothesis is the full solo albums will be the 7th sense unit in age order, so jaehyun will be next, then mark, then it better fucking be yuta or i will burn down the fucking sm building. which speaking of. I'm thrilled for doyoung but I'm worried about the absolute lack of buildup for this album. taeyong had his youtube channel, ten was building off a good amount of momentum in China and then he shone in baggy jeans. I'm worried they might have rushed doyoung's album as a distraction from the fact that all of the company's senior artists are leaving one by one. alsoooo (and this is definitely… pessimistic) i think the flood of nct and wayv news (doyoung's album, wayv suddenly working on two albums this year, smoothie promotions being so rushed) this past few weeks was deliberately done to keep the nct/wayv brands focused on the current members, rather than people we do not speak of, in whose articles the words nct and wayv might come up often. which i really hope it isn't, the boys deserve all of the chances to shine and all of the recognition and success, but… we all know what kind of a company that dumpster fire is
Hiiii! Oh my gosh yes! I'm so happy to see him and he's doing well. And he looks so beautiful. Taemin is my first ever bias like since I was 16, hes still my baby, But after a while Onew became number one SHINee bias and still is, I just love him so much and his smile and voice and I'm just happy to see him return and hope he's doing better. Such a precious man. Also Taemin being my first bias and Yixing and Hyunjin being my ultimate biases, I just find the same man in different fonts and love them forever. Oh yay I didn't even know about Doyoungs solo album I really hopefully once the time comes he'll get equal promotions as everyone else. Yes Yuta solo album or even Johnyu duet album ooh or Johnny Hendery duet album I just love theyre dynamic. Yeah dreams comeback feels rushed and I could be wrong, shot in the dark but I think smoothie might be a euphemism. Could be wrong but I don't think the song is about smoothies. But it does seem like that and I think anyone other than you has stopped reading so far but there's a little guy and I'm happy he's not a sad little guy anymore and he's doing his little guy thing and his little guy thing is wonderful and he's a beautiful little guy. Hey! look at another little guy! who has no business enlisting, I know he's almost 30 but also him just so tiny.

Year 5 - Dear our SHINiest angel:
Tumblr media
Last year I decided to honor your memory with a letter written to you and I really liked that, so I’m going to make it a trend until I find a different way I want to remember you on your death day. Wow… Five years… has it really been that long since we lost you? It feels unreal to be thinking that. It seems like only yesterday that I was waking up to the news of your death. The pain of it still feels so fresh, though I can only imagine what it must feel like for your members and other loved ones. I know that you’re always on their minds.
Tumblr media
It’s been quite a year for your beloved brothers. It started out with Onew making a comeback. You would’ve loved it - it was very Onew without having to be very ballad-y like we’re used to seeing from his solo work. I know you two used to bond over your love for ballads but I think you would’ve approved of him showcasing a new side of himself - the SHINee side. For me, it reminded me of when you released She Is; how it was bright and colorful, super catchy with choreography to match. You would be laughing at hearing all of the new gen K-pop stans that were surprised by this side of Onew because you know as well as us Shawols that Onew is just as capable of releasing a performance song as the rest of SHINee is. That’s the beautiful thing about you, your members, and SHINee as a whole: you’re all multitalented and capable of anything you put your minds to. Onew looked great in the music video and showcased his theatrical side. That would’ve had you laughing, too. That’s another thing you two bonded over: being goof balls together. Onew was your one hyung you had in the group, that one person you could turn to for that Hyung-ly advice when you needed it the most. Yet, I have to wonder if you had still been around for this comeback, if you would’ve been the Hyung in that moment. You and Taemin were the first to make your solo debuts and it comes with a heavy heart that Onew, Key, and Minho had to make theirs after you passed. I’m left wondering if Onew would’ve been coming you on advice for his album preparations. I wonder if you two would’ve sat down together and written songs together that he could’ve included on his upcoming album. On top of that, I wonder if you would’ve gifted any of the members one of your songs like you did with Taemin for his debut album. I know you would’ve done it in a heartbeat because you loved gifting others with your lyrical magic. I can already picture you now: as soon as you found out one of your members was making a solo debut, you would’ve locked yourself in the studios, working on the perfect song that fit that particular member just right. Would it please you to know that now, instead of them being inspiration for you, you’ve become an inspiration for them? Would you be touched? Brought to tears? I like to think so; like to believe that I know so. Key and Minho have both written songs in your honor, and of course we all know that all your members collaborated together to create Our Page, but my hope is that you’ll continue to inspire your members and we’ll get pieces from Onew and Taemin as well.
Tumblr media
Next, we had your Bummie and his comeback. Holly fuck, did he rock this one. Everything your members release is amazing but Key truly found himself with this one. You would be so proud at the amount of involvement he had in this comeback. You know better than anyone how outspoken Key is and this album and comeback one hundred percent shows how much voice he had in it. I love that for him and I’m sure it makes you proud because that was one of the things you did as a solo artist, creating five whole albums made up of nothing but your own creations. You were a legend for that. It goes to show how much Key is sticking to his word: “all my actions are the truth of me and all for you.” Key has been speaking his truth, and though the “you” in his message is very nondescript, I believe wholeheartedly that that he’s referring to you - his Jonghyunnie-hyung. Though his artistic style is definitely his own, I can see your influence shining bright in him. He keeps releasing more and more of his own creations. I mentioned this in my last letter to you, but I have such a strong suspicion that you helped him in the past with his song writing. Maybe you were the one that taught him how or worked closely with him when he was still starting out. Maybe you two would hit the studios together and record demos of the songs Key wrote because you were so excited to guide him into the finished result and leave him with an arsenal of songs he could someday use in the future. I’m sorry that you’ll never get to hear the finished results and stand beside him as you witnessed people’s reactions to them. For my own piece of mind, I like to think that there was at least one song of his that you got to listen to before you passed and the praise you gave him after listening to it helped motivate him to keep writing. You would be proud of how far he’s come and how great the songs are that he writes. His title song, Gasoline, was one he wrote and he fought tooth and nail to have it as his title track despite not many voting for it. That was always something you two had in common - your drive to make yourselves heard and convince others that your choice was the right one. I could just see you voting for it, even though you would have no part in the decision making process. Not because you would feel obligated as his group member but because the song is an embodiment of Key and a song he wrote himself. You always created music that meant something to you without caring how others felt because in the end, it was something you were proud of and made with your own two hands. It would make you happy to see Key following in your footsteps.
Tumblr media
Taeminnie was supposed to return from his enlistment on November 27th, but his discharge date got postponed. It was a real let down but at least he was able to come visit Key at his solo concert. Late last year, he had to be moved to Public Service because of his struggles with anxiety and depression. I bet it worried your members to see another one of you going through that. I can’t imagine how much it scared them and how all of their minds instantly went to you. I can’t blame them, and I hope you don’t either, for immediately worrying that Taemin would follow in your footsteps in the wrong way. That’s not to say that any of us put any blame on you. I think your struggles, your story, helped show Taemin what happens when you leave your mental health unchecked and don’t put in those barriers to protect yourself from getting in too deep. You’ve shown him how it feels for an outsider to experience losing someone to a battle with depression. In my mind, I like to think that it’s because of you that Taemin spoke out about his mental health troubles and told his superiors so that they may grant him a better way of fulfilling his enlistment. Yet, at the same time, I hope Taemin isn’t completing his new tasks and asking himself the same question that you did: did I do well? I hope he’s not further beating himself up and thinking he’s weak because he couldn’t handle the stress of his original placement. Like we did for you, I want us to send Taemin the message that he did do well. He did well by prioritizing his mental health. He did well by not giving up entirely. He did well by not giving into the toxic masculinity mindset of sucking it up and being a tougher man. You helped with that, you know. You were always battling that toxic masculinity by showcasing your emotions and being vulnerable about your troubles. You were a good hyung to your maknae and even in death, he’s still learning from you. When Taemin eventually returns, we’ll showcase that love for him and remind him how great he is; that he did in fact do well. Just like we did for you. Thank you for reminding us Shawols of how important it is to praise our idols for their accomplishments no matter how small they may be. Taemin admitting to having anxiety and depression was a vulnerable moment filled with trust for us as a fandom to accept that about him instead of shaming him. We mustn’t forget that and let him dive back into idol life without thinking of himself first. I want nothing more than to see SHINee reunite, but above all else I want all of our boys to be happy and healthy before that happens. We are a patient fandom and we’ll wait however long it takes for that to happen if it means we get to have all of our boys together, including you in spirit.
Tumblr media
After releasing a couple singles, Minho finally made his solo debut earlier this week. It’s been a long time coming, but like I said, SHINee World is a patient fandom. It was well worth the wait, but I guess you already expected that. You have more faith in your member’s capabilities than I think they sometimes have in themselves. Perhaps that’s another thing you all have in common as the humblest idols in K-pop. You five can never see how hard you work and always claim that you could’ve done better. Yet, when it comes to each other, you can see each other’s efforts and greatness as clear as day, but instead of getting on each other for not believing in yourselves, you build each other up like true teammates. I think Minho could’ve used you in this time preparing for his debut. Not because he’s lacking or needs you there to hold his hand through it all, but because he needs you there to cancel out that voice in his head telling him that everything needs to be perfect. I think that’s part of why it took him so long to get to this point. Minho has all the talent, all the drive and ambition to release a stellar solo album, but his need for perfection holds him back. You know how competitive he is - he’ll want to make sure that whatever he releases gets him some kind of win. He could’ve really used you to be there to tell him that not everything is a competition and what’s more important is that he’s releasing something that speaks to him as an artist. As a fellow selfless person, you know the kind of mindset that Minho walks around with and have laid witness to many of his selfless actions. Himself is never the first thing on his mind and alongside viewing an album release as a competition, you know he’ll be worrying about what the fans will think and wanting to make them happy. You’re a perfect example of a solo artist that didn’t lose themselves in the album making process. When you created your first album, you could’ve easily gone to SM and asked for the album to be filled with the songs they believe will be the next big hit. But you didn’t. You had a selfish moment and created a debut album filled only with songs of your own creation because it brought you happiness to share that part of yourself with the world. I think Minho could’ve benefited from you being there to tell him to be selfish for once and do something that will make him happy. Looking at the final result, I think in the end Minho was able to accomplish that. Even though you weren’t here in person to give him that advice, I think you did help in someway. He included a self-written piece, just like you did, and his motivation to have his album follow the rest of SHINee’s inspired others to create a song that matched the rhyming theme with his title song and album name, Chase. It’s yet to be said, but I believe that the lyrics for the song are a reflection on Minho’s feelings towards losing you. He might not have written it himself, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t thinking of you when giving directions on the kind of song he wanted to promote and the message he wanted to convey. I believe in thinking of you and SHINee when creating this album was his own selfish moment that he desperately needed. I’m glad that he was able to find that in the end, and I’m sure you are, too. You would’ve been the first one to praise him on how well he did. I hope he can hear it, in his heart, because once again he’s falling into that same humble SHINee mindset that he needs to work harder. I hope when the day comes when all of you can reunite in the afterlife that you’ll be the first one to tell him, and all the SHINee members, that they did well.
Tumblr media
It feels right to end this letter talking to you about Minho’s official solo debut because as Minho keeps reminding us, he’s the final piece to the puzzle. SHINee’s solo album collection is finally complete. Again, we have you to thank for this because you were the one to start the trend by “plagiarizing” Taemin’s album design. It was such a silly joke the two of you made at your solo debut party. If only you would’ve known that you were the trend setter in all of this. You inspired Key to follow the same album design when he made his solo debut, and Onew continued it, even though it’s only in Korean that the album titles rhyme. It was still a style choice that they decided to follow because of you. If it weren’t for you “plagiarizing” Taemin, we would never have the beautiful collection that we have now. You were also the one that once said that even when SHINee is apart, you still come together in the end. Like pieces of a puzzle, these albums represent the individual styles, colors, and personalities that make up SHINee. It’s such a beautiful concept and metaphor because really, all of you shine so brightly when you stand alone, but you shine the brightest when you stand together as Shining SHINee. Thank you for “plagiarizing” Taemin. Thank you for wanting to remain connected to your group even when you stand alone. Thank you for starting something that gives all of us, the fans and your members, a way of staying connected to you even though you’re gone. It’s the most precious gift you could’ve given us, even if you didn’t realize the significance of it at the time. Were you always secretly hoping Onew, Key, and Minho would continue the trend? Were you hoping to one day display them all together? I know you would have because your members mean so much to you and you would be so proud of them you just couldn’t help showcasing it. I can picture you taking one of your cheesy closed-eyed selfies with all of them like a proud appa taking a family photo with his children. SHINee is truly a family, a family you helped create, and though you might not be related by blood, a stronger bond ties all of you together. In a way, these solo albums are like a physical representation of what it would be like to be tied together through blood. It was your combined efforts, you blood, sweat, and tears that created this invisible tether that will forever bind the five of you together. You all will find each other again, whether it be in the afterlife or in another life, I truly believe with all my heart that the five of you are meant to be together. Did SM know what they were doing when they placed you five together? Did they know the kind of magic they were creating? It was destiny, and I’m so, so glad to be one of the billions of people that get to witness that. Bonds like this don’t come around that often. It’s beautiful and I’m thankful every day that I discovered your wonderful group. As much as it pains me that you’re no longer around to witness and physically be a part of it all, you are still here in spirit. I feel you in everything SHINee does, both as a group and individually. Your members were right when they wrote their dedicated song for you, Our Page. This page in SHINee’s story has not ended, not even close, and you will stay together until the end. You will never not be considered a SHINee member and SHINee will always remain five. I look forward to seeing your presence in every SHINee endeavor that’s still yet to come, and though these dedicated posts used to bring me much sadness, I now look forward to sharing that with you for years to come. Next year marks 15 years since SHINee debuted, so I know it’ll be a great one. See you next year, our beautiful angel. You did well, and your members are continuing to do well, and it’s all thanks to you.

SHINee member Taemin has officially been discharged from military service, and he’s set to celebrate it with fans during an upcoming fanmeeting event.
The K-pop idol was officially discharged from his two-year military service on April 4, nearly two years since he enlisted for active duty on April 19, 2021. The occasion was marked by his SM Entertainment, which released a video titled ‘Taemin is Back’, featuring archival footage of the singer in a practice room.
Soon after, Taemin also released a handwritten letter, touching on his time in the military and feeling about being discharged. “I missed you so much that even saying ‘I miss you’ is not enough, and I believe everyone who believed in me and waited for me must have felt the same way as I did,” he wrote, per Dong-A Ilbo, as translated by Soompi.
Today (April 5), Taemin announced a two-day solo fanmeeting event that’s set to take place later this month, on April 22 and 23 at the Kyung Hee University Peace Hall in Seoul. According to Korea JoongAng Daily, tickets for fan club members will start on April 13, followed by general sales on April 17. The event will also be streamed on Beyond LIVE.
Meanwhile, SHINee are expected to return as a full group in May, according to a release schedule shared by their label SM Entertainment in February. The upcoming release will mark their first comeback since the repackaged album ‘Atlantis’ in April 2021.
On the other hand, member Onew released his first studio album ‘Circle’ last month. The record arrived a year after the singer’s sophomore mini-album ‘Dice’, which was led by the single of the same name.

My Top 15 Kpop songs of 2022
*Blows dust off page*
Okay, it’s been QUITE some time since I really used this but I feel like it’s a good time to get into the habit of posting on here. What better way to start than to post about some of my favorite Kpop tracks this year.
It’s a mix of Title Tracks, B-sides, and Digital singles. It’s in no particular order.  If you think my choices are lacking in taste, cope and make your own list.  I’ll also create a favorite albums of 2022. Here we go!
Taeyeon- INVU
The whole album will be making an appearance on my top 15 kpop albums list, but this title track really impressed me, I loved the whole vibe of the song.
youtube
Changmin- Fever
Devil is also a monster track but personally  I prefer Fever.  The performance of it is outstanding.
Bang Yongguk- Up
My guy got discharged and came back swinging!  The whole project is so good! If you haven’t checked it out, you should.
Tan- Du Du Du
Impressive debut from this rookie group.  Later releases have been hit or miss with me, but this track made me take notice of them.  Hopefully they’ll get back to this kind of music because they were onto something here.
Purple Kiss- Can’t Stop Dreamin’
Just got into this group and this song really caught my attention.  Love their vocals and can’t wait to hear more from them.
Onew- On the Way
Onew stepped out of his comfort zone with this and it’s such a GROOVE! Another one that will be showing up on the top albums list.
B.I. feat. Devita - BTBT
This song has been in heavy rotation ever since I heard it. It’s so addictive.  I love it.
iKON- But You
This track wasn’t what I was expecting from them, however this really fits them as they are currently.  Do I miss ratchet iKON? Yes, but I’m not mad at this point of their musical journey.
Hyoyeon- DEEP
MY GIRL!  People slept on this release but it’s so great! So on brand for her.
Pixy- Villain
There were many tracks called Villain this year and this one by Pixy is by far my favorite. It’s a whole MOOD.
youtube
SNSD- Mood Lamp
It’s SNSD.  They came back.  That’s all I have to say.
EXID- Fire
See the reason I have for SNSD.
NCT 127- Gold Dust
127 is always in their lane when they are crooning.  Fell in love with this track on first listen.
youtube
Ten- Birthday
Taemin’s #5 Fanboy was on one with this track.  It’s gorgeous.  More of this Ten.
Jaehyun- Forever Only
My guy Jaehyun did not disappoint when it was his turn in NCT Lab.  All I’m waiting on is the solo album announcement (which I hope happens in 2023 considering the reception of this and Lost).

it’s your secret santa again 🎁💞 the holidays really are always a season right between nice and really stressful, but i hope the nice part is lying ahead for you and your week has gone well so far <3
loved what you said about nct (127)!they’re one of my favourite groups too and doyoung is one of my biases too, i sooo get what you mean. at first i only listened to their music without watching any videos or content, so his voice stood out to me first and i was like … damn, who is that … and here we are now! he has a fantastic voice and is really hilarious dhhdhehje. and your song choices! ahhh, i loved seeing those! your blog title made me think of time lapse right away and seeing you mention it i was like, well, that’s clear now (what a good song whew). overall, i just love how nct always has some stuff going on and you can just sort of pick what you want to enjoy and see from them 👌
loved your character list, i feel like these are so very you and fit what you’ve told me about the shows and stories you go for (and dw i would find it difficult to seoerate jwds and vegaspete too, they are so intertwined in each other). your taste really shines and i love how your gifsets always are an extension of that. the way you see your favourite media and characters and give them room in your stuff and your creativity is so cool! ☺️
i know our time is coming to a close, but some last questions bc i still love reading what you have to say: are there any dramas you are looking forward to in 2023 or any on your watchlist? any movies you really loved this year? and any show or movie that took you completely by surprise or was just a fun watch for yourself?
sending you good vibes and thoughts! 🌞
hello my mystery friend! i'm a little sad that our time is coming to a close--i've had such a nice time "chatting" with you!
this got kinda long, so i'mma put this behind a cut!
i'm trying not to freak out about the holidays--this was a rough year for us and frankly i don't need to compound my stress, y'know? it'll be okay. my family is relatively healthy and happy, and that's more than i could ask for.
right??? doyoung's voice is so good! doie, release a solo mini album, i beg 🙏 my friend pointed out once that my biases tend to skew toward the singers and when i thought about it, i realized she's right. doyoung from nct (also taeil!), kihyun from monsta x, onew from shinee, baekhyun from exo... there's definitely some merit to that lol
i was reviewing that list and wow i do have a type, don't i? i like my men slutty and/or emotionally stunted. 👌
you're so kind 💕thank you for saying that about my gifsets. i'm enjoying making them and stretching myself creatively. honestly, i haven't felt this creative in years. i didn't realize how much i missed giffing until i started doing it again on a regular basis. i thrive on engagement, and i'm so happy that people seem to enjoy what i do.
hmmm. dramas i'm looking forward to... i don't have a lot of new dramas on my list but there's a lot of already-released stuff waiting for me. 'prison playbook', 'under the skin', and 'big bet' are a few that come to mind. there are A LOT of dramas that i need to get back to (that adhd brain baby!): 'tomorrow', 'extraordinary attorney woo', 'the guest', 'flower of evil' and 'my country: the new age' come to mind. despite having lots of shows to resume, i've delved into a couple of new ones--'bad and crazy', 'somebody' and 'connect'. i'm enjoying them all so far. 'bad and crazy' is so much fun right now (i suspect it will get less fun as the series goes on) and the chemistry between lee dong wook and wi ha joon is great. 'connect' is interesting (and kinda gross, but it is takashi miike so). and 'somebody' gives me the chills. love it.
as far as movies, i really liked 'incantation'. i finally saw 'the handmaiden' this year--amazing. i also watched 'mother' and 'memoir of a murder'. both very very good films. i hope to continue my journey through shin ha kyun's filmography 😍 (god that man makes me insane)
i'm trying to think if anything took me by surprise, and honestly it would be 'beyond evil'. i realize i'm a broken record at this point, but that series really changed my life. i went into it anticipating a murder mystery and what i got was this beautifully told story about love, loss, death, greed, companionship, loneliness, found family, and flawed people. i think about it literally every single day, i've watched the whole series three times so far, and i feel like i'm due for another one soon.
sending you good vibes and positive thoughts!!! i hope you're safe and well, mystery friend! 💕

Shinee fucking ran so that kpop could walk and those are just the facts that everyone should accept.
They debuted when kpop had a very specific style and concept of what young boy groups could do in order to sell but Shinee really knocked on the doors with replay and as soon as they opened, they deadass shot out Lucifer and Ring DD and no body was prepared lmao.
They legitimately redefined kpop and I really don’t think they get enough credit for that? FROM DAY ONE, they had the most intricate and class choreographies in kpop. There’s a reason why shinee are called performance legends. It’s because you can pick any damn shinee choreography and it’s just so amazingly well executed; Not to mention they’re the first kpop idols who started releasing choreography practice videos and dancing without backup dancers which as y’all can see, has become the norm now.
Also, TILL DATE Shinee had the most packed schedule for any kpop rookie group ever. They were out there performing for 8 hours and then going back home just to rehearse for another 8. Their success was so unexpectedly high and they were literally teenagers handling all that fame. Taemin was a literal child with a bowl cut ffs. Also, don’t come for my bowl cut children, they looked PRECIOUS in the replay MV.
Even as early as 2011, Shinee being known as variety show and pilot experts because they’re naturally so funny and have a bond within them that easily puts people at ease and makes for one crazy episode with no chaos or anything “extra” per say. Just shinee being shinee is enough. In an industry where idols don’t even react to other female idols at award shows cause of the knetz, ya bois, Taemin and Minho really went fuck it and did whole collab stages with Sunmi and Yuri. The flex. Not to mention the way Shinee and especially Jonghyun & Taemin said a huge Fuck you to Korea’s oh so precious “masculine aura” and just went on with releasing pretty boy and Taemin saying makeup isn’t something for girls and that makeup is for all genders, a legend.
The way Shinee had fans in countries like Dubai, Russia, India and many many others at a time when kpop really wasn’t a thing? It was just Korean music for Koreans but shinee went ahead and did their thing and it broke language barriers as if they were air. It’s 2020 and Barack Obama talking about shinee still feels like a fever dream to me tbh.
Not even mentioning anything else now BUT just their music and it’s impact man?? The way shinee put out ALBUM after ALBUM with no rest and the fact being that, Every damn song they put out was a WHOLE BANGER.
Like?? SHINEE’S FUCKING DISCOGRAPHY??
JULIETTE, SHERLOCK, RING DD, REPLAY, LUCIFER, STRANGER, GOOD EVENING, VIEW, PICASSO, MARRIED TO THE MUSIC, WHY SO SERIOUS?? BRUH WHAT EVEN?
SHINEE songs that get covered by rookie idols everyday, mentioned by established idols as their inspiration during trainee days, songs that the entire population of Korea would know. Songs that trainees practice on for hours hoping that one day they too, would debut.
Shinee, a boygroup who’s know as the group who “made their own concepts” and everyone else simple followed.
And the craziest part is they are one of the longest standing groups in kpop, been together for 12 whole years and are still as relevant and iconic as ever. The fact that all five members have so much solo potential and even then nothing trivial like fame or money had ever seemed to break shinee up as a group is really a feat.
Taemin is no doubts THE best dancer and one of the most successful soloists in the entire kpop industry. A living legend tbh. His discography is hot, molten GOLD. Jonghyun’s VOCALS are liter-al-ly one of the strongest vocals in the entire industry and every damn shinee song is a proof of his sheer excellence as a main vocalist. Cue to Stranger. Onew deadass sang opera for a loaded audience once and left everyone shook and his 40 sec long note. Also, this man leads the chaos that is shinee, mad respect. Key’s rapping style is honestly so distinctive and HONEY that man can sing like his life depends on it. Not to mention kibum is a FASHION ICON. Also, his ‘born to shine’ solo stage. HE DID THAT. Minho really out there being a multi talented class act, who’s a main rapper but has vocals that could kill. Not only that, man be out here having acted in so many successful dramas.
Imma say this once and I want all you third gen kpop stans to print it out, Shinee did for kpop what no one else did so you might not stan them or listen to their music but the one thing your ass will do, IS RESPECT THEM. Respect shinee and everything that they went through in a time where kpop wasn’t shit and kpop artists were treated so heartlessly as if they were nothing but cash machines. Also they’re from SM so God knows what kinda shit that company has put them through and one can never imagine the sheer amount of pressure on the members to have been so young and so in pain but having no one to trust at the heights of their success; Imagine being loved and cheered on by thousands on a stage only to come back home to nothing but you and your head in the now deafening silence. Imagine waking up one day and finding out that a boy you spent half your lifetime with, shared your best and worst moments with, is suddenly gone? Just like that? AND THEN having the sheer fucking courage to go up in front of thousand teary eyes and questioning glances, leaving a microphone empty on a stage and while using his damn background vocals; singing your heart out to the songs he wrote under an aqua blue moon knowing, for sure, that what began in 2008 will never really end, ever.
THAT IS SHINEE. FIVE LEGENDS. PERIOD POINT BLANK.

since you are sharing about jonghyun, i used to listen to shinee a long way back when i was a kid but basically knew nothing about them but then only started really getting into his work postmortem sadly and for a really long time i couldnt stand to watch mvs etc etc now im tentatively attempting this again and idk where to start tbh
hello!! i've loved shinee since 2010 and jonghyun was my favorite since 2015 and it's very difficult and i still find it hard to listen to poet artist or watch videos from late 2017 to 2018 (i can't watch anything from the from now on concert) but there's rly not much of a block from listening his earlier stuff for me? it's just good music i've loved and will love. also could u not use the word postmortem? it's disrespectful and incorrect, i think u mean posthumous.
for jonghyun solo work of course start with BASE (2015)!!! literally blew me away it was cutting edge krnb with 90s rnb influences from a hugely popular pop artist and mostly written composed produced himself! crazy is i think the only song not made by him (he only wrote the lyrics) and it did very well but deja boo his self produced song he made with zion t and his high school friends wefreaky was a smash hit and they released it as an additional single after seeing its immense popularity. and there's a secret track on the album called fortune cookie that's not on streaming usually but there's an mv here. BASE is a flawless no skip wellrounded debut mini album with an rnb base, an easy listening coffeeshop song (love belt), a gorgeous rnb ballad (mono-drama which may be my fave jonghyun ballad), and a little experimentation (neon). hallelujah was my fave jonghyun song from 2015-2020 but now it might be before our spring. make sure u watch the performance videos too!! he's a master performer and i love that he chooses to have minimal choreo or backup dancers for a lot of his solo stages and still fills every space.
also very important to say that BASE started the shinee plaigarism trend where all the members named their first solo albums to rhyme. taemin debuted with ACE and jonghyun made his BASE so its key and FACE and onew and VOICE as well. minho hasn't released a solo album yet but he uses the title CHOICE often.

Genie Music K-pop Exploration Team's listening session — O (Circle) PICK by Kim Yoon-ha, Kim Young-dae part i
source x
YOUNG: Who is it today?
YOON: Today, like Woojin, I brought the work of an artist who released a solo album. However, this artist has already released solo works
YOUNG: He did
YOON: He's the main vocal of a group we're really familiar with
YOUNG: Yes
YOON: Who is it?
YOUNG: ONEW. LEE JIN/KI LEE JIN/KI. Our Jinki.
YOON: We prepared ONEW's new album Circle. This is his first full lenght album in..?
YOUNG: He debuted in 2007 or 2008?
YOON: 2008
YOUNG: Then it's his first after 15 years?
YOON: In the meantime, he released two mini albums, the solo debut was a bit late. After releasing his first mini album in 2018, he only released a japanese album, another EP and now his first album.
YOUNG: As the main vocalist of one of the greatest groups in K-POP history there weren't many releases so it's pretty meaningful that it's first album in 15 years
[...]
YOUNG: A little curiosity. What is the difference from a mini album and a full lenght album?
YOON: I think it depends on the times, based on 2023 KPOP standards, 'mini' showcases chapters organized like 'this is me' and 'this is me'
YOUNG: That's right, a mini is a sampler menu in a restaurant: this restaraunt is good at this and that. If it's like this a regular [album] is a full course
YOON: Yeah, it's eating the main dish [...] Basically the ingredients are the same but it's inevitable that the point is what flavor and what kind of eye candy you show them. Onew released two mini albums called VOICE and DICE: VOICE is a calm album filled with ballad-like songs while DICE is very refreshing, it's onew's colorful side. What album would you think is the real ONEW? With that feeling, I think this album, 'Circle' , is an answer and a question.
[...]
YOUNG: Let's go with the general evaluation
YOON: How was it?
YOUNG: For me, this recent talk about SME incident. Hybe and Kakao...There are things like that, right? If you like SME music or your favorite artist is under their agency, what we're curious about is how SME music will change after lsm, will it change? Critics are flaggergasted about this, right? Opinions are divided, it'll be similiar, it'll change... I don't own this CD and I haven't seen it in person but lsm isn't in charge
YOON: Oh
YOUNG: So in a way this is the first album without LSM..? Kind of like that, I don't know exactly. [...] is this the grand post lsm era?
[note: lsm place as executive producer for this album was taken by onew himself he revealed it in hot tracks circle fansign event x]
YOON: I didn't feel much of change, compared to the existing sm sound [...] commenters are saying 'uh but it changed a bit'
YOUNG: We'll know when the number of cases increases!
YOON: I thought it was an album where I focused on the voice of the singer
YOUNG: Yes
YOON: While listening to it, we also check things like 'oh, this music is this kind of genre' and 'this kind of songwriter in this is essential' but the more i listen to this album, the more i think 'oh, this person wanted to express his voice like this' or 'this person can sing with this voice'. I think the most important part of this album is the fun of finding things like that
YOUNG: It's one of the two [things to find]. 'Which song penetraded through this voice and showed its presence' or 'or, did you really use it in that direction by collecting only the songs that are really optimized for this voice?' But i think it's both
[...] Of course, his voice is unique. to be honest, Onew's voice
YOON: If you hear the first note, you'll know that it's SHINee's Onew
YOUNG: Right. that's a very gentle voice
YOON: The more I listen to it, the more I think it's the result of Onew's obsession with his voice
O (Circle) PICK - O (Circle), Cough, Rain On Me, Caramel & Anywhere
YOON: In that sense, the song that really obsessed me was the first song, O (Circle)
YOUNG: To add a bit of exeggeration, the image of this album, should I say it's a sound effect? Should I call it tone? I think 70-80% of the colors that I feel when i think of the album are decided here
YOON: I think so too. As soon as I listened to this song, I got to listen the whole album
about O (Circle)
[...] YOON: You mentioned the first part and I think that the most of it was very anomalous and completely different. As soon you hear that sound, in a science fiction movie, you know? The feeling of trascending time and space
YOUNG: Like a warp
YOON:Yes, that kind of part. That part starts with Onew's voice, as soon as I hear the sound, it's like changing time and space
YOUNG: You're coming out strong from the start, a voice that changes time and space?
YOON: I've told you that before and I think that feeling came straight to me, I thought 'Wow that's good'. But honestly it's not that easy to approach, right?
YOUNG: Some people might think 'it's not the sound I expected'
YOON: It's a song that's actually pitchy or contemplative rathar than pop
YOUNG: Yes, so I thought that the atmosphere of this song... its core is Onew's rich voice who floats on the mood and atmosphere rather than the melody or anything like that [...] There's no meeting, the lyrics are all floating around. The image itself. When time goes quickly, the seasons go like this, it's kind of like the clock goes backwards when the time goes back, Onew's voice feels like that. [...] If you think of the theme of this song, we think that time is going foward with renewal because we're crossing the calendar but there's a cyclical time structure where we can come back and find a common ground, right? I think we're moving foward while turning around? What he's [Onew] trying to say is tha we look alike and go against each other. It's exquisite that those parts are expressed in a floating sound unknown to us, like you mentioned earlier
YOON: It's very attractive, I found it very attractive. On the other hand, it's not easy to write lyrics for a song like this, it has all the sounds. I don't talk about lyrics that much but I really want to talk about it in this song. Kim Eana wrote them for this song! When the song starts, they give us words to the melody and the beat of 'nana-nana-nana-(sun cloud wind)', the words continue to throw nouns, and of course, there's a message afterwards but the words continue to contain the image of the sound we talked about, it plays a role in making it separate from the reality. So if there's a sentence, we keep thinking of the narrative but if we throw a word like this, we start to imagine it, right? The chemistry between them is really good
YOUNG: In terms of generation, Kim Eana is a lyricist who's both old and new school? These days, there's a way to make impact with your lyrics in k-pop, there's a new style but Kim Eana is not really that style, she stuck with, I think, a strange sound that we can't exactly say is a trendy k-pop song
YOON: It's not a song that can lead in terms of trend but Onew's voice is a actually a bit trendy in terms of sound. Since it's close to an alternative R&B sound, I think it's a song that creates a strange appreciation by adding lyrics that emphasizes the taste of korean words, it's a song with a high level of completion. Everytime I listen to it, I think about it. [...] It's one of my three favorite songs.
[...]
about 'Cough' and 'Rain On me'
YOON: Before we came in we talked about the album and said "1, 2 and 3 punches are the best"
YOUNG: I think the beginning [of the album] was done not until the end but it got the upper head and completed the big frame?
YOON: The songs after O (Circle) that created the atmosphere are 'Cough' and 'Rain On Me', they're slightly warm, aren't they? For me O (Circle) feels rich and dreamy but it makes me feel lonely emotionally, 'Cough' melts my heart. It's like when the snow melts in winter and it becomes spring? It's a perfect song to listen to this weather these days
YOUNG: To me, 'O (Circle)' is close to the sky. I mean, if it's more of a philosophical and contemplative thing in the world of metaphysics then 'Cough' and 'Rain On Me' feel like they're on the ground
YOON: 'Rain On Me' isn't a heavy rain either, it's a spring rain: it's like a sprout is going to come out after the rain stops. These two songs go really well with this spring vibe. 'Cough' has a moist feeling while 'Rain On me' has a rain theme but it feels a bit dry, I liked the twist
YOUNG: There are a lot of reasons for that dry feeling, the singing style... but also it's just Sam Kim's style [note: 'rain on me' composer & lyricist]. All the songs he made are like this, his style is kind of dry and the music itself has a lot of echo and there isn't much of dynamic in general. The music is stretching out? There's nothing cute about it.(YOON: Yes, it's very calm) I think 'Cough' is a bit cuter?
YOON: It's lovely to me
YOUNG: Cuter and more lovely
YOON: That's right. The strings spread in the chorus and then he goes back to his voice and guitar. It just ends dryly and I realized that's where Sam Kim and Onew meet
YOUNG: First of all, a guitar should be dongdongdongdangdongdongdang, here is just dreungdreungdreung and Onew fills in the middle with a warm voice
YOON: It feels warm but a bit rough, that charm is really amazing
about Caramel
YOUNG: I'm dancing right now because of the next song. Isn't it something that anyone can dance to? (laughs) In a way track number one, two and three are too calm. 'Cough' is cute but slow, this is the first track to raise the groove
YOON: In terms of sound 'Caramel''s role is connecting the front part [of the album], it also raises the tempo slightly. Also, Giriboy featured and took part in the work
YOUNG: "More, more, more, more into space" ['Caramel' lyrics] This is the only part where you get excited while listening to it, it goes up at that moment. 'Rain On Me' remains stuck on the ground while, I really like the expression of walking, in 'Caramel' you start walking faster
YOON: Yeah and also it's a bit witty the, how do we call it? A mouth trumpet? Lip trumpet? Louis Armstrong did a great job!! I think you can listen to 'Caramel' while walking lightly in a spring day, it's a representative pop track
YOUNG: It's cozy, but it doesn't have that cozy feeling in slow songs. I'm sure people who will listen to it will relate to it. It feels like a breeze, like a blanket? It feels like a breeze and a blanket. I really like that feeling. I really like the voice Onew uses, he's so talented. I love his song with Lee Jin-ah, 'Starry Night' is always in my top playlist
YOON: I really like that feeling. [...] If you look at the album as a whole, this kind of song was necessary as bridge, the previous three songs we discussed before penetrate the album emotions but from the heavy part to the end [of the album], it goes more to pop and k-pop route. I think this song needed to play that role. It's also good to meet Onew's skilled vocals. The lip trumpet that we mentioned earlier is a small skill but it's an advantage of this song, you can meet Onew, a skilled vocalist who sings naturally to a beat, soul and rhytm that you haven't seen in k-pop tracks
YOUNG: His pronunciation is so good. 'Sweet like caramel' It melts...
YOON: That's right, that's right! It's like it's melting into something...
YOUNG: When I first heard it, I thought it stood out? I thought it might break the album's emotional line but when I heard it for the third time, I was happy the song came out and that's the advantage of a full-lenght album. I rarely change my mind when it comes to mini. (YOON: the songs are few...). Since there's no flow. That's the fun part of a full album.
YOON: Giriboy's feature helped
about 'Anywhere'
YOUNG: SO, where are we going? Let's go somwhere else? Are we going to 'Anywhere'?
YOON: 'Anywhere'!! Yes, that's right. I choose it as one of my top two songs in the album. I like it because it feels like the middle of the album, after 'Caramel', which brought some of the rhythm, this songs explodes with a slight change of temperature. I think it's a song that makes you feel comfortable, I like this album section. If it's a full lenght album, there are a lot of songs and of course we care a lot about the songs' flow. Tracks one, two and three, as we said before, came with a dark and luxurious vibe, with Giriboy's help we came into 'Caramel' rhythmically and then in 'Anywhere'... there was a lot of emphasis on things like rough but cozy acoustic sounds in the first part but here, it naturally leads rhytm and cools down [the album's vibe]? Do you know the pop-like feeling? I like that feeling
YOUNG: Uh, sure. It has a bit of city vibe. I feel like I'm staring straight at lights at night and I gradually lose focus without even realizing it or like if you keep looking at the surroudings reflectively while driving, there's a dreaminess that you feel when you pass a line and feel nothing.
YOON: It has a bit of speed
YOUNG: With a sense of speed, the beat goes like this 'I'm not going anywhere', the sound is all around me
YOON: The notes are actually that low? [note: youngdae was singing]
YOUNG: No, it doesn't have a crescendo, it doesn't sound like it, but it feels like he's praising you. It's a city pop style, it has a good vibe

SHINee’s Onew will be making a comeback soon!
On March 22, media outlet Sports Chosun reported that Onew is preparing a solo album with the aim of making a comeback in April.
In response, a source from SM Entertainment shared, “Onew is preparing a solo album with the goal of releasing it in April. Please give it lots of attention.”
This new album will be Onew’s first solo album in about three years and four months since “VOICE” in December 2018. Although he has continuously participated in various activities, including schedules with his members, OSTs, collaborations, and musicals, it has been a long time since he has released a solo album. It is said that Onew is putting a lot of effort into it.
In January, he gave a hint about his comeback on SBS’s “My Little Old Boy.” He remarked, “If you wait a little longer, I think I’ll be able to repay you with great music.” Since then, fans have been anticipating his return with a solo album.

Shinee
love them!! so much
favorite member: jonghyun and kibum! love them all though
which member i’d fight (& why): none
favorite songs: lock you down, sherlock (clue + note), password, spoiler, dynamite, nightmare, shine (medusa i), orgel, excuse me miss, symptoms, picasso, view, trigger, farewell my love, woof woof, an encore, odd eye, prism, feel good, shift, all of the story of light, body rhythm, kind, area, cøde, kiss kiss
favorite thing about the group: unbelievable live performances!!!!!!!!!!!! multitalented artists across the board, constantly evolving their sound and doing it well each time, very charismatic performers, very kind and generous to their fans and peers, each one of them has done flawless solo work as well.
something i’d like to see from them: while taemin is away, a continued focus on their solo work - kibum’s bad love honestly would have been aoty for me last year if mini-albums counted and minho’s heartbreak shows how much potential he has as a soloist. i think minho in particular is due for something that could be like jongin’s first mini album. i would love for him to lean into the retro-future noir concept and atmospheric sound heartbreak has for a full blown release. onew’s done so many beautiful ballads; voice feels very cinematic to me. I would be so excited if he did something a little different with his next release - he is more than capable of doing so. i will take literally anything kibum has to offer - everything he has done has been so good.

Post Jonghyun’s Passing Thoughts:
I always see people talking about how much of a Taemint Jonghyun was before he passed - going to his concerts, knowing his choreography, the infamous crying while wine drunk over Taemin’s latest music video, etc. - and I always have mixed feelings about that. I’m not hating on any of that because it shows how much Jonghyun cared about their maknae, how much he supported Taemin’s solo career because he knew personally how much it took for Taemin to get to that point, but it makes me sad to think that he never got to experience the other SHINee members’ solo careers.
Like can you imagine? Jonghyun would’ve been at every concert, every showcase, dancing to every song, belting them out on instagram live, wearing all the merch, taking selfies with every advertisement he came across, hyping up that member’s comeback look, playing their songs on Blue Night and then gushing about them right after. Jonghyun loved his members with all his heart and it breaks my heart that he’s not around to do that anymore.
I am a little biased when I say he would’ve especially been losing his shit over Key’s solo work, and while Taemin might be his baby, Key is his best friend and “soulmate” according to Jonghyun himself. And he would’ve been doing the same for Onew and Minho, too. He would’ve been the first one saying how much he enjoyed Dice and seeing Onew not just doing ballads like we’re used to from him. He would’ve been teasing Onew, asking him how an old man is able to dance that well and joking about ruining SHINee’s image when he just laid down on the stage at his first solo concert. For Minho, he would’ve been complimenting him on how handsome he looked in his music videos, teasing him about looking like a billionaire, and congratulating him on releasing songs that don’t really have any rapping lines in them.
My heart goes out to the other SHINee members, too, because I can only imagine how they must feel. There’s no doubt in my mind that those similar thoughts cross their minds every time they release something new. How much they must long to hear what their main vocalist and master lyricist thinks of their albums. How much they wish Jonghyun could’ve written a song just for them that they could include on their albums. How much they secretly envy Taemin for something they will never have. And I’m sure part of Taemin feels guilty that he got all of Jonghyun’s support and the other three didn’t get that, even though he tells himself he shouldn’t feel that way because Jonghyun loved them equally and Onew, Key, and Minho’s solo careers just came a little too late.
I like to think that that’s the reason the other three jumped right into releasing solo work not even a year following Jonghyun’s passing. The lyrics in Key’s I Will Fight sum that up beautifully because I do think that, in a way, they are doing it for Jonghyun. Taemin made his solo debut 4 years before the other three did. They could’ve solo debuted in that time, but my gut tells me that there can’t be a coincidence that they did it after Jonghyun died, especially since they continued the pattern of having their album titles rhyme. He is never not on their minds and everything they do, they do for him in some way. They are living for him. They are continuing and expanding their music careers for him.
I know a lot of what I said is speculation and can’t be taken as fact, but I thought I should share these thoughts because I’m sure a lot of you are feeling and thinking the same things, especially since Key just recently talked about Jonghyun on Living Alone. I’m glad that he and hopefully the other SHINee members are getting to a place where they can freely talk about him and how that affected their lives. I don’t want any of us Shawols to pressure them to do so because it is a sensitive topic for them and if they don’t want to talk about it that’s perfectly acceptable and understandable. I’ve made posts like this in the past because I follow the same logic that a lot of other Shawols follow: talking about Jonghyun, sharing our thoughts and feelings about him and SHINee is our way of remembering him. I don’t want to ever forget Jonghyun and I know all of you don’t want to either.
This post kind of got away from me, but I want to end it with this: if you’ve ever hesitated to post something about him, something like this, because you’re afraid of what others might think or are afraid that it’ll affect the other SHINee members in some way, I want you to know that it’s okay. I highly doubt the other SHINee members could hate that (as long as it’s not slandering him). They want us to remember Jonghyun in every way we can. I think it makes them happy to see that we haven’t forgotten him. It will make them sad, that part of it will never go away, but it’s better if we do talk about him and continue to show our love for him than to never do so at all. Make those Jonghyun related posts, create fan art, reblog his old photos, share your thoughts and feelings. You’re not alone, and if we ever want to get the other SHINee members to feel comfortable in sharing these things about him as well, we have to remind them that they aren’t alone and we’re right there with them. And if they don’t want to share, we have to support that, too, and show them that no matter what we love them and they are doing well.
