Mid laugh, brown eyes crinkling and his head thrown back, that's the blurry image of your best friend in front of you for the last two minutes.
"Joe as much I love to see your little potato head but your screen is frozen."
" ugh, shit! The bloody wifi connection at my parents' is the worst. Wait a second!" his voice on the other end is a bit muffled as he seems to be moving around, trying to fix it.
It was one day after Christmas and you and Joe are trying to have your own little celebration via video call while you both are at your family's and didn't want to wait till you eventually see each other in person again, unpredictable with Joe's busy schedule nowadays anyway. So you both had sent each other's presents via post and now wanted to unpack them together.
So now you sit on your bed in your old bedroom, presents scattered around you and your tablet in front of you with the frozen image of your laughing friend.
" OK, what about now?" Joe's face finally in time again and him waving at the camera
" yes, now get started I already tried peaking but you really are serious about your sticky tape"
" and see how it came in handy" his cocky little smile makes you roll your eyes while grabbing the first present on your left which already has a bit of wrapping paper ripped out, but sticky tape all around it preventing you from making out what it could be.
At the end, you both sit in a colorful mass out of wrapping paper, presents sorted in a little pile beside you, and now updating each other on the newest family tea.
" no! I swear my aunt was full-on gushing about how Eddie looked like her ex-boyfriend's when she was a teen and started showing pictures of you as Eddie all around the dining table, it was soo uncomfortable!" you comically shuddered and Joe's snickering like a little kid at your theatrics.
As comfortable and at ease you were now around him was the complete opposite when you first met each other a year ago.
You sat on your friend's couch, phone in hand, and playing some stupid game, that only seems to come to use in social situations out of ultimate boredom, but trying to look very busy for the people around you. Questioning why your friend even thought it was a good idea to invite you to one of her parties, celebrating whatever with a bunch of her actor friends, when you were the epitome of socially awkward and just overall really bad at meeting new people.
You tried, you really tried to be a part of some conversations, standing in a group full of, on first sight, cliché book extroverts, all of them with interesting lives and using big words talking about different plays, with you just standing there and fake laughing at their jokes you didn't understand and attempting to stop comparing yourself with them. Which didn't work so after a few exhausting hours in which you've been ignored or got an awkward "was nice meeting you" after you ranted too much about a topic you finally could understand you gave up. Your social battery drained and you loathing in self-pity.
Loud cheers and greetings make you look up from your phone, great even more people. The new guest is a very ordinary-looking guy, plain light washed baggy jeans hanging low on his hips, a plain white shirt, sneakers. Not bad on the eye with tousled brown curls as well as brown eyes but not really your type.
Still he held an aura around him that forced you to keep your attention on him, apparently the people around him felt the same effect as they were hanging on every word that was coming out of his mouth. Or is he... Famous around here?! And you are just the only one who has absolutely no idea who he is?
But you're already admiring him for a different reason, Looking so awkward but at the same time so charmingly charismatic and being able to find the right words and topic for each person. You couldn't help to be slightly jealous.
Forced to look down again as he looked across the room and dangerously close in your direction you continued your game, only looking up again as you felt the couch dip as someone sat themselves beside you, and you hastily tried to turn your phone away to not get caught.
"well, that looks fun" shit.
Unknown ordinary looking /maybe famous guy is smiling at you and nodding at your phone
"uggh, kinda" and your brain is letting you down again.
But he doesn't seem bothered by your brain-dead state and tried again to engage you in a conversation, ending up with him having your phone and you, hanging half over his shoulder, explaining to him how to play the game.
"oh, I'm Joe by the way!"
You met Joe a few times after that again and eventually exchanged numbers which resulted in a weird and chaotic friendship. With his ability to make you feel so comfortable around him and just being yourself, he has to endure your ranting over the most ridiculous topics or oversharing the most private things, but it doesn't seem to bother him, on the contrary, he seems to even encourage your weirdness and just adapt to it.
Because of this connection between you both, you lost count of how many times people thought you both were dating or how many times your friends and family tried to play matchmaker, so a pinky promise between you and joe was made that you both are on the same page, that you are not each other's type, both of you already familiar with how one-sided feelings can destroy a friendship, so better making sure at the beginning right?
It was now new years eve and like you planned with Joe in your last call you both were gonna drive over to a friend's house who's throwing a party to celebrate it together, in person this time.
Joe's gonna be at your place to pick you up in nearly 20 minutes and you're still sitting in front of your wardrobe in only your bathrobe and still wet hair, nibbling nervously on your fingernails and looking over all your clothes, eyes wide with panic debating what you should wear to look presentable for him.
Which is absolutely ridiculous because Joe has already seen you in your absolute worst states, coming over to you with pimple cream all over your face, greasy hair, and sloppy oversized shirts with holes and stains you couldn't even explain.
But you haven't seen each other for nearly a month now, well except for the few video calls but that's just different, and now you are a nervous mess, suddenly worried about your appearance and you hate it.
The buzzing of your doorbell makes you jump slightly, spraying the last bit of hairspray on your head and turning the music off, which you needed to hype yourself up, and speedwalking to the door, taking a deep breath before opening it.
Joe's standing in front of you in black slacks and a slightly striped white shirt, the last button undone and a necklace peeking out of it, and you feel your heartbeat throbbing in your ears.
With a happy call of your name, he went straight into a hug and you suddenly felt distracted by the smell of his perfume, still the same one you smelt a thousand times but different regardless, Like his arms around you, squeezing you firmly into him, it's like your sensory perception is on high alert and suddenly everything feels more intense.
The car ride to the party is awkward to say at least, your nerves preventing you from coming up with anything other than occasionally humming or nodding as an answer, and after a few more tries from Joe he gave up, thinking maybe you're just nervous again because of all the people that are gonna be there and needed a few more minutes for yourself, so the car becomes silent and you hate it because that was your least concern right now, you felt like a bad friend, not seeing each other for a month and you can't even talk to him because this bloody nervous feeling just won't go away. So you both just stare at the road in front of you.
It's loud and full and lights flickering everywhere and you're so overwhelmed and tense that the weird feeling is forgotten for a moment and you're clinging to Joe, following him around like a lost puppy. Him ordering drinks for you both and chatting with people, trying to include you, taking you with him for smoke breaks, the only time when you both are separated is when one of you has to go to the toilet.
A few minutes before midnight a group of people had gathered on the balcony, with them you and Joe, shouting the countdown to the new year and watching fireworks exploding and illuminating the night sky.
" happy new year!" you screamed in each other's faces and laughed as you tackle each other in a big hug. People around you doing the same or walking around and giving the traditional New Year kiss.
Observing this you both looked at each other and shrugged while giggling, both slightly tipsy, and pecked each other on the lips. Physical contact wasn't unfamiliar to you, both being touchy when around people you feel comfortable enough, small kisses when saying goodbye, or cuddling together on your small sofa when watching some movies weren't new either. What was new was the feeling you felt as your lips met his.
As you separated you looked into each other's eyes, you always thought that his eyes were beautiful, even told him so, but you never felt such strong emotions when looking into them, unable to hold eye contact your gaze trailed to his lips, so full and soft looking and you never felt such a strong urge either to be near them. Subconscious you both lean in again and your lips met again but this time for a real kiss.
Warm flooded your body and you can't think of anything else other than the feeling of his lips against yours. His hands found the back of your neck to bring you even closer and you copied him, trailing your fingers through his curls, both of you starving for each other's presence and hungry for more, captivated and lost in your own little world.
Until a person stumbles into you and you remember again where you are.
Both of you catching your breath as you separated again, waking up from the trance-like state, emotional chaos whirling up in you again because you just made out with your best friend, with which you made a silly pinky promise and made very clear to not be each other's type to save this friendship but now you experienced the best kiss you ever had and when you look at his face now he is so beautiful and you can't help to want to kiss those lips again but you were also so overwhelmed because what the fuck does this all mean now.
Luckily Joe answers your questions as he leans in again for a third kiss, shorter but still as breathtaking.
" I know we promised to be not each other's type but do you wanna go on a date with me?" he asked against your lips and you both giggled as you nodded 'yes' before going into another kiss.

CONCLUSIONS!
so there's a lot of ways to chop this one…
"racism and capitalism still exists in the future" is a trope that it's kind of limiting / always grates me in some ways (it feeds into the anti-racism of ppl whose politics doesnt trascend idealist philosophy -> that is, it is an anti-racism that can't conceive of an end to racism bc it doesn't actually have a political project that address the material causes of racism and just tries to fix the "natural prejudices" away with "education". in other words, it cant portray a word without racism bc it cant *conveive* of one.) . however i think im more open to it this time / this series since s11 onwards the focus has been so much on telling stories about the present with scifi make up on. and i think this one manages to do that rlly well. ___
another vertice to look this one on is whether... is it really "doing anything" to have racism portrayed on screen (and other bigotry) in a scifi story? if u already experience racism or understand it happens, who is served by this? it's hurtful to watch and it's like missing the chance to "show a different world" is possible thru scifi. and the counterargument to that is on a """""color blind"""""" 2020s world it is rlly cathartic and re-affirming to have stories that *show* the realities of the world, and that dont shy away from showing those realities in fear of them coming off as "over the top" (bc they arent. some ppl will still walk away from this ep thinking "haha fun satires" but like. this is literally how White Rich People Talk. in real life.......) and again in this one time i think it works really well bc doctor who has… probably never done this? lol there's moments with martha and ryan for example, but never going this hard on it. but im open to discussion tbh. i think the angle of "is this a story about racism for white people to learn or is it a cathartic for *black / brown people to experience catharsis in" is gonna be one for fruitful discussion in the future. ___
besides the socio-political points,,,, bro this episode was a thrill ngl sdlkjf like so many simple, excellent moments like the girl walking into the light post. the made up slang and the real slang!!!!. the excellent interior design. "ruby and fifteen react to doctor who". just lots of fun little details. the execution was really inspired.
character point -> tbh fifteen at the end feels like a bit of Growth from like, ten at his worst moments -> "he's not the person you would have chosen to survive, but if you could decide who lives or dies, doctor, that would make you a monster"
also kinda wonder how this episde will hit for newbies / Not Us. i think a lot of its gut punch comes from dw never doing this before and so the strenght of subverting those expectations. is this an story that stands on its own w/o all the 60 years of context? we'll have to show it to our normie friends and see lol

By the way, highly doubt it will take off/be leaked, but I’ve already seen verifiably faked/edited evidence from some people, including being DMed it myself.
I’m the type to always believe a victim of a crime first, do my own research when it comes to defending the evidence as solid, and then come to my own conclusions. YandereDev is a person who needs no introduction when it comes to predatory behavior, so it is completely understandable why people would believe whatever evidence is being presented to them right now (especially after he’s been exposed as a groomer).
I hate shutting down people who are claiming victimhood because I know exactly what it’s like to have your story denied, but I have to say, sometimes faked evidence is just faked evidence and everything fails to line up.
I say this all because I was DMed by someone who claimed that YanDev groomed them when they were 14, asked for nudes, and sent them a picture of his penis. Of course I believed this off the bat. I wasn’t looking for any reason to NOT believe it whatsoever.
They claimed they had no access to any of their previous accounts whatsoever because their old phone broke, so no Discord, no Reddit, no Snapchat. At first they implied the interactions happened through Discord, then claimed it was through Snapchat. Okay, sure, that’s weird, but maybe I just assumed something I shouldn’t or this person has no idea how technology works. I asked if they remembered any of their old emails or account passwords.
They didn’t….alright, that’s okay. But wait! They sent a couple of screenshots of their interactions with YanDev to their friend! And their friend still has them! So of course, I asked them to send it over.

First of all, he doesn’t talk like that, and secondly, when I googled “fake snapchat screenshot maker”, the first result was a website where I could recreate this exact screenshot. I didn’t even have to change any of the default settings (which were Android OS, battery set at 50%, time set to 10:04 AM, default avatar.) And even if I didn’t find that screenshot generator, the pixels around “Alex”’s avatar, the weird way this version of Snapchat is formatted, etc.
I’m not going to expose this person, I’m pretty sure they’re just a kid…but once I called them out on the screenshot being faked, I warned them that if I noticed they posted it anywhere, I WOULD clarify it’s fake.
This shit discredits his victims. It’s disrespectful, people will always find out that it’s fake, and when they do, it will be your ass being put through the internet wringer. And people underestimate how bad that actually can be. It is potentially life-ruining. People who are later proven to be ACTUAL victims constantly have their life ruined from their abusers claiming that they lied— how do you think it will go over if you’re actually lying?
Anyways, I wanted to make this post so people know how to look for fake images, detect fake evidence, and detect inconsistencies in stories. Yes, this was an easy example, but running images through FotoForensics or zooming in and looking more closely when something seems off takes like, two seconds out of your time.
Also why is anyone faking evidence. Stop it. Horrible thing to do, not to Alex, but to Alex’s victims.

ok so. generally it is very easy to record cassettes. i for one was surprised about how easy it was. it is however a little timely but worth it because cassettes are god's most beautiful children.
you will need a cassette player obviously. i have bad experiences with the small walkman-type guys but i think that might just have been mine. this is the one i use to record them & play them most of the time

got it from my dad and she is my favorite firstborn son who is 30 years older than me. yeah you heard it right this bitch was made in the SEVENTIES and she hasn't let me down once except when she ran out of batteries that one time. as long as yr cassette player has a record button it should be fine though
you also need:
cassettes! fun fact you don't actually need blank ones (although they are a little easier) you can record over regular ones! i don't personally have experience with this though so here is an article on it

your Device! so Hypothetically i think you MIGHT be able to record from a phone if you have either a headphone jack on your phone or a very functional headphone jack to lightning adapter. again i have not personally tried this so i would recommend Computer
your music! Another Fun Fact you don't have to have any music downloaded to record it onto a cassette! cassettes will literally record any audio coming from your Device so all you need is a playlist from your streaming service of choice, a youtube playlist, a playlist of files on some media player, something like that. you could record a whole episode of television if you want no one can stop you. i will explain how to arrange yr music further on.
a cable that goes between the cassette player and the Device! typically a male-to-male 3.5mm headphone jack cable (gayyy). this guy.

this is probably the only thing on the list that isn't like. immediately obvious-- i got mine at a local guitar store but they're very cheap online
and of course fun things to decorate the cassette with!!! the Most Important part. i use sharpie paint pens.
OKAY!! step one!! get yr music organized. yr tape is probably either 60 or 90 minutes long or maybe 110 or 100 or possibly some other strange number if you're using a prerecorded tape. either way you need to make two playlists each the length of one side of the tape. so if i'm making a mixtape i usually make one big 90 minute playlist and then divide it up into 45 minute playlists when i'm done. if you're doing an album you Might be able to get one on each side (again depending on what length yr tape is). since the playlists generally end up a minute or so under the exact length my very favorite thing in the entire world to do is add a random song and let it play out in part at the end and not write it down on the tracklist. music dessert.
step two!! get those guys connected. my tape player has this hole labeled MIC

but yrs might not. so just plug one end of the cable into whatever hole looks like an audio input or headphone jack and hope it works. i am the farthest from an expert here. & then plug the other end into yr Device's headphone jack! congratulations you are now practicing Mad Science & yr devices are having transgenerational gay sex. (at least that is what it feels like)
step three!! play that audio!!! so this is the part where trial & error is key. because if you record your music on full volume it will sound Bad. i typically turn the volume on whatever platform my playlist is on way down. like.

but you don't want it Too Quiet or else you'll have to turn your player's volume so far up that the tape hiss will start to overpower the music. it's a balancing act. which is why you should...
step three point five make a test patch!! what i usually do is play the first ten seconds of the first song, ten seconds from the middle of that song, and ten seconds from one or two more songs on the playlist, just to get the full range of volumes & frequencies & whatnot. then rewind and listen to it back and figure out if it should be louder or quieter. this might not be super obvious right away (my first cassette Sucked) but it gets pretty easy to tell eventually.
step four record that bitch!!!! don't press play on your music the Second you press record because there's a bit of plastic at the beginning of the tape that can't be recorded onto so you'll lose the first few seconds of your music. this is also why you shouldn't have a playlist that's Exactly the length of a side but rather a little shorter or a little longer w/ a song you're cool with getting cut off. and then. you wait. my absolute least favorite bit. recording is basically the same as playing (in that the entire tape gets run through the player, at the same speed) except you can't listen to any music. you should also probably refrain from using the Device while recording to avoid any other sounds playing because like i said the tape isn't recording your music specifically, it's recording all the audio from the Device. i have So Many tapes with text tones interrupting the music :( generally i like to record tapes when i'm out or doing something off my computer or on occasion sleeping. once the whole side has been recorded there's a click (like when the whole side has been played) and you turn the cassette over, go to your second playlist, and do the whole thing over again!!
step five best step the reason we do it all DECORATE!!!! coolest thing about cassettes is you can decorate literally the whole thing. all the case all the card all the cassette itself!! anything that works on plastic should work. here are my children:

Hey! So uh! Update on what's been going on and why I've been relatively inactive for longer than I implied I would.
So around this time last year, I realized my laptop's battery was uh. Very warped and big. A state it'd been in for several months at that point actually. It wasn't until I mentioned it to my partner and they said "hey uh. that's extremely dangerous" that I realized the big swelling in my electronic device was not good. So for a period of about 2 months, I had to not use my laptop while I was waiting for a new battery.
Luck of the holidays, while I was using it during some downtime while staying at my partner's place last week, the fans started to make a jarring new noise during intense operation (as in. Playing Minecraft). It was fine only two days prior, so I don't know what broke the camel's back.
Being cautious after last year's fun times, I don't want to push it much further than bare minimum operations to avoid any potential major damage. I haven't got it checked out by a professional (or any more tech-savvy family friends who I trust more and don't charge extra), so I don't know what the exact issue is, or if it's a serious risk and not just a sign of this laptop being old. Opening just about any game will cause the loud fans to go off, as does using my second monitor while running even just discord and a couple chrome tabs. While typing this post using my laptop, the fans made the jarring noise very briefly before calming back down.
So... am I just gonna be without a computer capable of safely doing anything until I get a replacement part again? No, because I don't think this laptop is worth maintaining when it's liable to just have another problem next december, if not sooner. It's a hell of a machine, don't get me wrong. It's handled a lot more than most laptops have, running every game I've thrown at it pretty damn well, but the tendency for some new problem to happen every now and then makes me wary of trying to keep it going for everything I need out of it for much longer.
Does that mean I need a brand new computer then? Well as a wise rat once said: Yes. and, No.
Good news: my dad had another PC lying around, this one a desktop tower that my mom swears is a beast on par with the laptop, and because my dad isn't uh... up to much these days, I'm free to take this one too.
Bad news: it doesn't work. My mom and I tested it the other day, and we can't get it to power on.
Still, it's certainly gonna be a lot cheaper to get that operational than to get a brand new PC, with aforementioned family friends likely able to help. Unfortunately (for me specifically at least), it's still the holiday break, so my mom will be in and out of town until the second week of the new year, and I imagine those friends have things they'd rather be doing as well in their time off.
What does that mean for me here? Well, if my laptop can behave like it has been since I started writing this, I think I can manage to type out more long stuff like this. I can't do the same on my phone, since while I'm a rather speedy typer on my keyboard, phone typing is pretty cumbersome for me, so I imagine a long post there might be grating. That means I can likely do a few more Role Requeues in the coming days, get back to work on my War Bots notes, and maybe even some other long-form posts I've been wanting to do. Things I Love #3 may be a multi-parter with a... somewhat similar premise to someone else's ongoing series. I'm not sure if I wanna totally rip off this unnamed mutual's format of going episode by episode, or if I wanna make it a spoiler-free overview more like the Brave and the Bold and Doremi posts. With those shows I tried to make the posts a more open-ended general pitch and go over the overall high points, which felt appropriate for those shows. With Batman the show is simple and relatively formulaic, so going over the broad strokes was more efficient than going "And then Batman teams up with this goofy obscure character" 60 times. Doremi meanwhile is the opposite, that show has so much I could talk about but I really really enjoyed going into the show blind and so I tried to convince people to watch it accordingly. If I get a chance I'd love to do a full video series going over the whole show, but considering that's a 200 episode deal, on top of me never doing a video of any scope grander than an on-stream Terraria playthrough... don't expect that soon.
On the note of videos though, that's the main thing that's gonna be on hiatus: streams. If this laptop wheezes once or twice when it's running a chrome tab with discord in the background, then I don't think you'd be able to hear my voice over the chainsaw fans with a full stream setup. A few more personal things might be on hold too, or at least will require alternate setups, but those are private discussions to be had.
In the meantime, don't worry too much about me being bored. It sucks I won't be able to do much on my laptop and thus don't have access to any games on there, but on the bright side this is a great time for me to be doing just about anything else. Got 4 switch games (between me and my sibling anyways, and they don't mind sharing) and over 100 episodes of neetle teetles (2012) from the holidays to keep me busy, plus I can use the time to do art or something if I need another option for variety.
But yeah, that's the update explaining things. I've been restricted to tumblr on my phone and if I had to type a whole real post on that thing I think I'd rather use the phone to bludgeon myself with, so I've just been reblogging stuff. Not sure when I'll be back to full-steam activity again, hoping it's soon but not expecting much for another week minimum.
But that said, I hope y'all have enjoyed the holiday times, and if I don't say it again later, that you have a happy start to the new year!

since i have a bad habit of posting complaints but forgetting to post good news updates on said complaints:
yes i got to sleep finally and slept pretty well
yes i finally got a free ad-free weather app that, after some tweaking, is giving me accurate enough weather reports for my general area
yes i finally got the messaging bit of my phone to work, now im working on making it give me a notification when someone sends me something
yes i finally got the vibration bit when you type turned off (it was under entirely different settings than everything else)
yes i finally got the ‘lift to wake’ stuff turned off too, which had the side benefit of making my battery last longer so win-win!
yes my hip has continued to feel better. still no clue if it’ll stay this way or for how long, but i’m doing my damnedest to enjoy it while i can regardless

First newspaper purchase in over 10 years...
Wowsa, I didn't expect that using a Nokia flip phone would lead me to newspapers, lol. As I giggled at myself in M&S today buying this, I asked myself why tf am I even laughing? It's super normal to buy and read newspapers - like we did in pre-smartphone days. Normalising digital touchscreens have obviously made newspaper sales plummet over the past decade, which I think is quite sad. And the only people I see reading newspapers are those over the age of 30. These days, I think, being seen with a purchased newsaper (not the free ones given out at tube stations) is like an act of rebelion or protest against our obsessions with screens - you included iPad! I can't help but smile at those who clutch a newspaper while drinking a coffee on a London street (not literally, as I would have had the police called on me). All I think is: "Gosh darn it, go you! Defy those big tech companies! No cap!)
Gen Z's obsession with screens have enabled their unbiquitous use; they blend seemlessly throughout the fabric of modern life. Which in turn has created a deep-set reliance (both emotional and phsical). Though smartphones truly do have their place in society (rapid comms, mapping, safety, for certain types of employment etc), but I do forget that once you're neck-deep as a consumer in the attention-economy... the ones who truly benefit are tech companies making money from your micro-transactions or by exposing you to endless ads. This isn't new, but I always forget this and it makes me feel icky.
I miss... 1. The tangible nature of print media that you can read without fear of anyone grabbing it and running away (London smartphone mentality). 2. Being able to read a newspaper in sunlight without the need to turn up your screen brightness, or turn it down to save battery. 3. Reading detailed, well-researched stories/reports (as opposed to breaking-news with minimal facts). 4. Being able to stuff a newspaper in your tote bag and feel a bit old-fashioned sometimes. 5. Feeling offline.
This week's updates:
I've been using my Nokia 2660 Flip for three weeks, now
I can text much faster (with the aide of predictive text, which isn't perfect but always a nice compromise with not using my iPhone)
General anxiety continues to drop (I thought social media didn't really affect me negatively, but evidentally I am wrong)
I prefer writing (with bad grammer, sorry) over posting stories on Instagram - most people know that I am quite expressive/animated in person (and I enjoy face-to-face conversations much more)
I am reading more (Kindle) and listening to music most evenings to wind down (as opposed to doom-scrolling, as I literally can't)
Sleep is deeper and more consistent, less physical tension
My mind now wonders more, especially during times where I used to use an iPhone to entertain me/stop boredom. I have in fact embraced more moments of boredom and has allowed me to absorb my environment more and what is happening around me
YouTube is still social media (my brain has decided so), thus still overstimulating and kinda exhausting to use (choice paradox all over again) - avoding it most days
General focus has improved week-on-week. I am more deliberate with my entertainment options and I am fully engrossed without the sudden urge to check my phone (because my Nokia can only call and text, lol)
Planning on getting a Zach Bryan related tattoo, cos I am crazy and a fangirl. Maybe just the title of my favourite EP of his: 'Quiet, Heavy Dreams' on my inner left forearm. Some deep meaning for me there, too. But will discuss another time
Invisalign treatment will be complete by first week of July (just a few months to go!) After which I will recieve my retainers and will be sent away with full mouth-freedom. Queue the song: WAP by Cardi and Meghan #sideeye

Heart’s Choice - Chapter 4

"All right, all right. Let me think," I say as I get out of my truck and look around the parking lot. 
I could be wrong but something tells me Kyle doesn't want me to follow him into Walmart. 
Ghosts have their own kind of logic, though their own set of rules they follow and one of these is that they don't typically do things for no reason. 
Kyle appeared to me where he did on purpose, which tells me something about this area is significant.
Looking back towards the intersection, I see it. 
The cross road I'd been stopped at is West River Street, which runs parallel to the park where Kyle's body was found.
Great. He wants me to visit the scene of the crime. 
Well, better now, while there's still daylight, than after dark, when I'd have a better chance of joining Kyle on the other side.
Still, at this time of evening, the park will be pretty empty and strolling around alone while there's a killer on the loose seems like a bad idea. 
I'm tempted to call Ian Foley and ask him to come with me. 
I know he wouldn't mind and I'd feel better with a bear at my back.
I pull out my phone, intending to send him a casual... "Hey, wanna visit a crime scene with me?" text but the screen remains dark.
"Chingame..."
I sigh and contemplate the blank screen. 
Kyle must have drained the battery when he manifested his apparition.
Shit.
I weigh my options. 
I could ignore Kyle for now, go shopping, get dinner, go home, charge my phone, call Ian, schedule an official ghost-hunting trip and go to bed. 
Or, I could take a walk in the ‘murder park’ alone, while no one in the entire world knows where I am.
I might be dumb but I'm not that dumb.
"Sorry, Kyle. You can wait. You'll still be dead tomorrow. I promise."
I turn the key in the ignition. Nothing happens. Not even a stutter.
Fuck.
I rest my head on the steering wheel and sigh. 
Something tells me this isn't the type of problem a mechanic can fix.
"Fine. Fine, Kyle. You win. A walk in the murder park it is."

‘A long walk.’
West River Street cuts through a few blocks of retail properties, which grow gradually less ‘big box’ and more ‘quaint mom & pop’ the closer to the older parts of town. 
Then there's a residential area, an elementary school and finally, over a mile later, the river park.
"Thanks, Kyle," I huff under my breath. "This is great. You know I've been meaning to get more exercise. Thanks a lot."
A woman pushing a stroller along the sidewalk in the opposite direction glances at me nervously.
I smile at her and tap the side of my head and hope the gesture translates as ‘I have earbuds in and I'm on the phone’ and not ‘I hear voices and they're telling me to visit a crime scene.’
The woman quickens her pace.
So do I and I stop talking to myself. 
The last thing I need is another run-in with the cops and the less 'crazy' I appear, the better my chances of avoiding one.
The park entrance area is deserted except for a man strapping a bicycle to the back of a Subaru and a pair of women stretching after a run. 
Once they leave, I'll have the park or this stretch of it, at least, to myself. 
In other circumstances, it might be a pleasant prospect.
The paved trail, wide enough for two lanes, follows the little river through town, sometimes on one side, sometimes on the other. 
The park is only about a quarter mile wide but over five long, while the paved trail is part of a larger, twenty-mile loop. 
At this time of evening, with the sun going down and the daylight waning, it has a relaxed, almost enchanted feel and if not for the sounds of traffic just beyond the screen of brush and trees, I could imagine I'm much farther from civilization than a twenty-minute walk from a Walmart would allow.
Pausing for a moment, I look up and down the trail, orienting myself in relation to the rest of town. 
Detective Turner said Kyle's body was found where the trail goes under the highway, which, if I remember correctly, is west of me.
"This would be so much easier if I had my phone, Kyle," I mutter, as I set off along the path. "If I'm headed in the wrong direction, you better give me a fucking sign because if I end up walking any farther than I absolutely have to, I'll send you to hell myself."
A fitful breeze rustles the leaves of a nearby clump of willows and I shiver. 
Like I said, ghosts on their own don't bother me. 
The problem is when they're active like this, using lots of energy and interacting with the living, other things tend to notice, too. 
In the same way it's not a good idea to leave your door unlocked in a dangerous neighborhood or pack your sleeping bag with trail mix in bear country, so it's not a good idea to spend too much time hanging out with ghosts.
It's asking for trouble.
All those stories of hauntings that start out harmless and end up as fodder for terrifying movies? 
Those are typical of cases where one spirit starts the conversation and something less friendly decides to join in.
If Kyle has put me back on the spiritual menu, as it were, I want to stay as far away from the 'something else’s as possible, especially if the sign in the photograph Detective Turner showed me is what I think it is.
The sun sinks through the trees and as I'm walking due west, it lances through the leaves in brilliant golden sparkles, dazzling my eyes. 
Another fifteen minutes and it'll be below the horizon.
The park is not well-lit.
"Fucking shit, Kyle. This had better be worth it."
I quicken my pace and finger the wooden crucifix beneath my shirt.
I don't subscribe to any particular religion, myself, it's hard to declare one version is 'the truth' after all the shit I've seen but it belonged to my mother and it's among the few things of hers that I possess. 
All else aside, I appreciate the sense of protection and 'faith' it conveys. 
Not my faith, precisely but a sort of collective trust that there is good and that good is stronger than evil, in the end.
I haven't worn it in years. 
I'd forgotten I had it, actually but when I'd dumped all my 'jewelry' on the bed, it had drawn my eye.
Probably because of the symbol.
The overpass comes into view and I swear with a mix of relief that I found the place and apprehension at the thought that now I have to take a closer look. 
It's dark and the highway is wide, covering a good stretch of trail. 
This isn't a place to be caught unprepared, alone, at night.
I scan the shadowy places beneath the span of concrete, listening to the rhythmic thump of traffic passing overhead and the quiet burble of the nearby stream.
There's no obvious indication that someone died here, either, no crime scene tape, no flowers, no piles of soggy teddy bears or sad, half-deflated balloons.
Then again, aside from me, the police, his aunt, his killer and whoever found him, it's entirely likely that no one else knows Kyle is dead.
Poor cabrón. 
How many times could that have been me? 
Not that I looked for trouble but there were plenty of times I did stupid shit as a kid, testing my boundaries. 
And if I'd wound up dead in a park somewhere, who would have given a shit? 
Nobody, apart from Aunt Toni.
"Lo siento, hermanito," I say aloud. "I don't know how I can help you. But I want to, you know? So... If you got something you wanna show me, I'm here. I'll wait, okay? I know it's hard to get through, though and there's not much energy to draw from here, so... I'll wait as long as you need me to."
I walk to the edge of the path, right at the shadow of the overpass and sit on a low, backless concrete bench. 
Then, I wait. It's excruciating.
With nothing to distract me from the intolerable heaviness of being, each minute feels like an hour.
The sun sinks, twilight deepens from the gold of day's last light to the blue of night's edge.
Finally, something catches my eye.
It's not under the overpass, though but back the way I came, a flicker, like the spark of a lighter, under the narrow stone bridge where the path spans the river.
I'm pretty sure it's not just some hobo lighting up. 
For one thing, there's no place to sit. 
It's all uneven rock under at least six inches of water. 
For another, the light had a certain quality to it that the seasoned exorcist learns to recognize.
Something otherworldly.
Rising, I make my way towards it, leaving the path and picking my way down the bank to the edge of the broad, shallow stream. 
The light flickers again, right beneath the center of the bridge's span.
Swearing, I remove my shoes and socks and roll my pants halfway up my calves. 
Then, wincing as the sharp rocks bite the soles of my feet, I wade into the icy water. 
Even this late in the season, it's cold, fed by glacial runoff from the mountains west of here.
"Fucking hell, Kyle," I mutter. "This had better fucking be you because if this is some random yokai tryna lead me to my death, Imma send it to the ninth circle of hell for the fucking hell of it. You hear me, motherfucker? I'm more than a match for you."
I say this more for my own benefit than for any spiritual entity that might be listening but it makes me feel vaguely better anyway.
With many an ‘ooh’ and an ‘ouch’ and a ‘puta madre motherfucking shit’ I pick my way out over the rocks to the arch of the bridge.
Resting my hand against the curve of the old bricks, I catch my breath and shut my eyes.
"Okay, Kyle. You got me here. Now what is it you want me to..."
"Freeze. Hands in the air, on your knees."
I spin and find myself blinded by two extremely bright flashlights, held by two armed officers. 
The one who speaks has an aggravatingly familiar gravelly voice.
"I said on your knees."
Despite the sharp rocks and freezing water, I drop and raise my hands. 
Better cold and wet than shot dead.
"Carlos Martinez?" 
Someone splashes towards me through the water.
"Yes. Yes, that's me," I blink into the blinding glare of the flashlight. "I'm just..."
Strong hands grasp my wrists, forcing them down and behind my back.
"You're under arrest for the murder of Kyle Peters. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you. Do you understand?"
Stunned, I do the only thing I can convince my body to do under the circumstances and nod.
Detective John Turner appears in front me. 
In other circumstances, I wouldn't mind being on my knees while he looms over me but at the moment, I wish I was anywhere but here.
Meanwhile, above and behind him, on the underside of the bridge, the reflections of the flashlights reveal something that makes my blood run colder than the stream currently threatening me with hypothermia.
Symbols, symbols known only to a select few families and their rapidly dwindling descendants, drawn in a circle and pattern I recognize.
A circle of sacrifice and of summoning.
"Oh, my holy fuck. I'm fucked," I say.
"Sounds about right," Detective Turner says, sounding pleased with himself and hauls me to my feet.

I woke up to a dead phone battery again.
I was getting ready to type “it’s been hours”, or sumin’ like that. But I went downstairs to mix this oversugared Kool Aid with some water and now the Apple logo is coming back on.
Oh, thank God.
In other news:
I’ve had too much beef, and pork. Too much Kool Aid. My whole body is just fucked. Three/two hours of sleep these past few weeks, basically every day.
Then there’s someone sick in this house, who clearly doesn’t want to get better, and clearly doesn’t understand the idea of staying away from other people.
My great-grandmother’s offspring are so dumb. She never interrupted my sleep. Kept a clean house. She ate Burger King, but she also ate fruits and vegetables. She exercised. She actually knew things.
And I’m over here getting fucking ear infections from using one of her daughter’s towels. The dog’s had an ear infection for months, maybe even a year. Now he’s having eye problems. He didn’t start his life in this shit either.
I need to go all the way back.

It sucks that this house is where my great-grandmother spent most of her last days. It probably even is a reason she died after her surgery. The room she was in wasn’t this bad, trust me. But still, nothing has ever really been clean here. The carpet, the blinds, the towels, the floor, the dishes, the water, the air.
I’ve gone without, many times, to make sure I was healthier and functional. I haven’t been able to do what I should in these environments. But they’d rather gamble, and do other shit, than fix their houses.
They criticize me for getting upset at them for the way they ruin or jeopardize my belongings. They call me “materialistic”.
No. I value my things. I’m thankful for them. Just like Elizabeth. Got a problem with me, you got a problem with her.
I fucking miss walking barefoot. And not having to clean my hands all the time. I miss clear sinuses. I miss tea. My library, which I haven’t really touched…ever honestly. I buy. I never experience.
I need to get away.

This prompt was hard for me for so long because I was in a writer’s block when I found it. I first started it in July 2019 and then just never finished it. I came back to it this month, so I could get some shit off my chest. I’m not very descriptive, everything is up for your imagination. Hence the serious lack of names and setting, etc. This is based off a personal situation I went through last year. Please be kind, I haven’t written in a long time. I hope you enjoy :)
Short Story Prompt from July 18, 2019
“yeah bitch I’m in love with you, so what?”
The sky had been a muddled grey all day, and frankly she was tired of it. Weeks ago she had made plans to go on a picnic on this exact day only for the Gods to hold the threat of a thunderstorm over her head with no signs of leaving. With cowardly feet she stepped back from the window and went towards the kitchen counter to get her phone. Snapping a picture of the depressing sky she sent it to the group chat.

Within seconds she received multiple blue bubbles from her friends
stop trying to bail
no really this has got to be the 3rd time you’ve flaked sis
if we cancel the picnic we’re still hanging tonight but we get to pick
She pondered which of the two hells were worse. In the absence of her daily caffeine she made the poor choice of allowing her friends to pick the next place.

Honestly, she appreciated her friends more than they would ever know. Mostly because she would never give them that much credit. Ever since she had told them she’d been pining for pretty boy, her friends used every excuse in the book to get her out of the house. They called it sulking but Y/N considered it more along the lines of healthily coping within the comfort of her home. Netflix was always there, the grocer was only a couple blocks away whenever she ran out of carrots and hummus. Life was good. Y/N had always been quite the hopeless romantic. Although pretty boy was not one usually that fit her standard of her soulmate, her standards eventually molded to perfectly encompass him. Suddenly everything she wanted, and dreamed of, he had. The realization had shocked her so much within that moment (months ago) she had sworn she needed a pacemaker. So yeah, this realization had been quite devastating to her and she needed time to cope that her and pretty boy would never have the sickly sweet ending she despised but secretly wanted. Her phone buzzed once, then twice, then far more than thrice.

In the middle of her typing a box popped up. [Low Battery: 20% battery remaining] 
“Shit!” She scrambled to get her charger from the couch and plugged it up in the outlet in the kitchen. If it had been up to her she knew she wouldn’t have left the house, but she was glad she could count on her friends to pull her out of her own quicksand.

“Okay you look fine as fuck! Who told you to show out like this?” Jodie pulled her into a tight hug upon entering the club and couldn’t stop gushing over her friend. Y/N tried to keep her smiles hidden but her friends were no stranger to her facial techniques. 
“Stop! You told me to dress nice so I did. You all look gorgeous tonight, really.” 
Jodie and Cassie gave each other a knowing look. One Y/N knew because she had shared it with them so many other times. Embarrassment flushed through her with a hot flash realizing she wasn’t included. 
Cassie smirked as she turned to look back at Y/N. “Oh please as if you didn’t get so fucking hot for just us! You know who else is here?”
Eyes wide and heart safely tucked in the deep crevices of her ass Y/N took a quick scan around the club. Flashing lights and dark shadows turned frogs into princes and bartenders into off duty model mixologists, so it was only natural she didn’t trust her sight when they landed upon one sweet pretty boy. 
“OH YOU’VE GOT TO BE FUCKING WITH ME RIGHT NOW!” With a shake of her head she turned on her heel intended with the fiery of a thousand demons to find her way to the next bar or anywhere she could let off steam without the stress of protecting her self image. 
“Oi grab the American would ya!” She heard Jodie shout to the bouncer as she passed him. As the cool air simmered her from the altitude of her insecurities, she found herself in a loop of mental recuperation. Seeing the boy she was almost convinced she was in love with, amongst the crowd of hundreds of other women who were there for the same reason she was, was not what had been in her plans. Let alone leaving the house. Granted she came to have fun, she reminded herself. Though she’d be lying if she were to pretend she wasn’t more than 110% open to leaving with a bed companion. What’s that saying? To get over someone, you have to get under someone else first? She’d ask Cassie later.
“What’s with the temper missus? You telling us you didn’t plan this?” Cassie stood directly in her line of sight unmoving as Jodie circled nearby glaring at the clubgoers outside watch the commotion of her storm out just seconds ago. Quickly Y/N gathered herself, flustered again by the unwanted attention and curious eyes. She looked into Cassie’s piercing hazel eyes, slowing her breaths so she could speak clearly.
“Of course I didn’t! I honestly thought you lot had? Something kept me wanting to stay in the house and that-“ She stopped herself.
Jodie shared another look with Cassie, one full of pity and a hint of something else she couldn’t detect.
Jodie switched guard watch with Cassie as she approached slowly. “It’s not that we planned it so much, but knew he’d be here. Cassie’s got a thing with his friend who’s playing later tonight, so unless he’s a shit friend it was almost a guarantee he’d be here especially on a Saturday night.” She paused. Y/N searched her friend’s eyes, immediately knowing they were true, as they had always been. 
“So you just expected me to go along with it then? As if I don’t already spend every waking second of my day thinking about a guy who isn’t remotely knowledgable of my existence outside of ‘some girl’ he sees around?” Jodie laughed as she listened to the beginning of a traditional ramble of her friend’s overthinking overworking mind. 
“I’ll stop you right there, you don’t know what he thinks idiot! That’s the whole point of tonight, you introduce yourself as you see fit and get to know the bloke for Christ sake, you talk about him so much for ‘some girl’ who don’t know half a shit about the man!” Y/N laughed for what felt like the first time that whole week. In an attempt to run from the ferocity of her feelings she hadn’t realized once again the genuine love of her friends. 
“I guess you’re right.” She sighed. Admitting defeat over who was right versus wrong was not a malleable quality of her’s. Y/N tried not to take the cocky smiles of her friends too personal as it drove her right back to the bouncer who had seen everything go down. With a snicker and a mischievous glimmer in her eyes she whispered to him as he let her in. Her friends approached quickly behind her, she sent them a wink and was off in a flurry away of confused looks from Jodie and Cassie and gruntled disapproval as the bouncer shook his head restricting their attempted entry. If she was going to do this, she didn’t need witnesses let alone her own two personal cheerleaders coaching her from the sidelines. A solo journey to be faced head on, victory or complete failure she needed to do this alone. She’d tell them all about it later.
Steeping under the glowing flashing lights, sheen painted the rambunctious moving bodies around as she moved through the crowd with her chin high above her shoulders. Her neck serving as a telescope, as if it would elevate her eyesight beyond her height. Though her pupils were no match to high grade magnification, she spotted pretty boy within seconds and he was already looking straight into her soul. She wanted to freeze, but something in her kept pushing her up until she was only a breath’s kiss away. 
“Hey.” He smiled down at her as they quickly embraced, although had she pregamed it might’ve lasted just that bit longer to turn her into his bedmate for the night. His voice was so decadent, like chocolate melting on to the ripest cherries slipping past her lips. Her fantasies ought to have landed her a Nobel Prize, for even when he stood right in front of her she could only hold him in reverence off of the image he held so strongly in her mind. She breathed out a response but it was so automatic she wasn’t sure if she had imagined it. 
“Hi.” 
“I haven’t seen you out in awhile, I saw your friends earlier. Where’d they go?” She hid a laugh but allowed a smile as she pretended to look around almost just as curious as he about their whereabouts. She shook her head with a frown and sighed. 
“Honestly I couldn’t tell you, they always abandon me at some point throughout the night I’m used to it.” She shrugged. Secretly she wondered if the 20 minute window she had asked of the bouncer had ran down already. Her friends were top tier pranksters, she knew they could hold their own until she finished business. Yet the prank window started to feel like a countdown on her finesse, more so than a break from the top viewers of her story tonight. “Scary seeing you here, the one time I leave the house and you just happen to be everywhere.” She sounded smoother in her head, but she felt the delivery was nice. 
He smirked and licked his lips as he contemplated (what she imagined) a smoother response. SCORE! All she had to was keep her head in the game but not overthink it too much. She could do that, she was perfectly capable of doing that. 
“What, so now you’re scared of me? Personally I’d leave the house every night if it meant I’d be seeing you.” He had got her with that one. They were at a tie now, 1-1 but she was determined to win. “Everywhere, that is.” He breathed out. Ah damn it, that put him up by a point. 2-1. She couldn’t help the blush that had taken her cheeks hostage. If it hadn’t been for the dark scene of the club he would’ve reveled in the sight of her crimson painted face. She shook her head smiling. A thought came rushing in and flew out her mouth before she could stop it.
“Are you here with anyone else?” He leaned closer unable to hear her question clearly. “I mean did you come by yourself or were you planning on meeting up with someone?” She strained out into his ear. He grimaced as he shook his head. 
“No no, I’m here for Stevie he’s playing in the band later and knows the DJ that’s opening for the club tonight. He’s got a thing with your uh friend Jodie?” Y/N giggled. 
“You mean Cassie, Jodie plays the single game better than anyone I know!” She shouted over the music. Their bodies drew closer together to break the ice through the meaningless ritual of small talk. She was hotter now than she had been up against all the sweaty bodies that her’s had kissed to place her right up under her dreamboat of a man’s shoulders. 
“Yeah you’re right. I knew that sounded wrong as soon as it left my mouth, no offense to your friends.”
“None taken.”
It was in this moment they paused for what felt like eternity, she looking straight through his eyes and he the same. How did the world get so quiet in one of the hottest club openings of the summer? Typically these were the types of silences that sent her straight into her psyche, overloading with self-doubt and scheming with self-sabotage. It was a shared moment, amongst a throng of pulsing heartbeats and sex driven bodies that didn’t belong to each other. How could someone she imagined to be so like her manage to indulge in silence as she, even within the long 60 seconds of a minute? His hand brushing up on her arm catapulted her back to present time.
“Let’s go load up on these overpriced shots everyone’s been talking about. I’m sure we’ll find your friends somewhere in that vicinity.” He was funny too. Oh this wasn’t good. 
“Neck that shit! We’re not leaving this bar till you’re loose! I wanna dance not pretend to!!” Her voice had gotten scratchy from all the yelling and continuous shot after shot she shared with pretty boy. He could hold his liquor alright, which meant he had more drinking to do. She still hadn’t caught sight of Jodie or Cassie and 20 minutes had long gone and flown out the window. Somewhere around Shot #7 she had seen the band setting up the stage, and around Shot #8 she had ran to the bathroom in fear of her breakfast making a surprise appearance. Pretty boy who’s name was not to be disclosed while she was inebriated, had kept her afloat as her body fought with her to settle down the shots she had been throwing back. He had gotten tipsier with her, but certainly was not as drunk. 
She found that the more time she spent actively trying to be present in the moment with him and not keeping score of who’s flirtations grabbed each other more severely than the other, the further back she was sent into her mind. Now all the plans she had previously made with Jodie and Cassie began to make sense. She needed social interaction practice more than she had realized, especially if she hoped to make any progress in any type of relationship that was important to her. Yet all it took was a simple touch and she didn’t need to try to do anything other than just be with him. It made her more lovesick than the poison that was sitting at the pit of her stomach. He took three more shots and barely breathed between any of them. Even sober she knew she would have been in complete awe, he seemed indestructible. She tried to remember the score to humanize him, but couldn’t. This was worse than a high school crush. 
In a whirlwind of strong hands, loose limbs, counter tops, and knocked over shot glasses they found themselves on the dance floor. Only inches apart they laughed and boisterously sang into each other’s faces as the DJ slowed down the tempo of one song and smoothly transitioned into a little ol’ Jodeci mix for the 90s lovers crowd. Their bodies melded as he grabbed her by the waist and brought her in as if she had been waiting outside of his arms far too long. He giggled and dived into a hearty laugh as their bodies raised in shared heat. 
“This was a personal request of mine, I heard you were a fan.” At this she turned around and leaned her backside into his chest. There was no way she could hide the Cheshire grin that had stolen her face. She wanted to scream, tell the world this was the one for her. But reality was a humility to experience, although her heart and body was on fire, it was in this heat she observed from the outside looking in. They were a tipsy couple on the dance floor, seduced by the music and swayed by the tensions bubbling below. Attractive nonetheless, but fated lovers? Maybe a little less. 
She lay her head in his neck as they slow danced, she ground her hips into him with the strongest stance she could as he wrapped his arms around all he could. She didn’t know how to thank him other than this dance. Once the night was over she knew so would be the fantasy. Her lips began to burn with the incessant desire of kissing him, she wanted everything he could offer in the privacy of the night. Simultaneously, she wanted to be the good girl and let this moment be what it was, so that she may see him again in another context with the promise of running into him again and again. Shot #8 was throwing her for a doozy, she didn’t wanna be thinking she just wanted to be dancing. With him. 
So she did. Song after song had played and the grinding and slowness of it had gotten real dirty. She knew she was approaching that line, but her feelings had her trapped in between straight flying through it or just barely crossing it. His lips had teased up her neck until the band started their set. And as they played, his breath dedicated little songs between their bodies, hinting at painting where her jaw fell into her clavicle. He was a romantic surely, and had no problem romanticizing every bit of her as long as he could hold her. It was when his lips gently puckered right below her neck she was jolted out of her stupor. He was on his way to deliver another loving gift as such when she broke out of their shared embrace to look for her friends. 
The set had ended minutes ago and the band was packing up, she hadn’t seen Jodie or Cassie since before she had left them waiting outside unknowing to her little joke. She needed to find them before she went home with someone else. Y/N didn’t bother looking back as she hurriedly paced through the crowd, she figured she could call them but what was the use? She was already agile in speed now that his kiss had began to awaken a fire in her she was not prepared to tend. 
Suddenly a firm yet gentle grasp enclosed her lower arm, and brought her flying into a sturdy chest. 
“What the fuck was that?” His hostility made her wince. She knew she had been wrong to leave him stranded after such a sweet moment, but this was her hardwiring. She truly didn’t know any better. His breath hardened, he watched her face closely. “You just go flying off like some storybook princess, and expect me to chase you?”
Panic flooded her heart, she was horrible at confrontation when she didn’t have the upper hand. This was torture. 
“No of course not. I just-“
“You just what? I thought we were enjoying ourselves, did I do something wrong?”
Tears welled up in her eyes as she tried to keep her voice from cracking. “No it’s me okay, I just need to find my friends.”
“I’m fuckin kissing you and I’m supposed to believe you were thinking about your friends?” 
“No! I just, I really like you okay and I don’t know where my friends are and it was just a lot. Please, I don’t expect you to understand.”
“No I wouldn’t either because that makes no fuckin sense. I’m supposed to believe you’re in love with me and that’s why you’re running off as soon-“ He shook his head stopping himself, disappointed. She hated seeing him like this, let alone being the reason for it. They were still so brand new to each other she never imagined herself on this side of things. Up until this moment she didn’t think she’d had any impact on his heart, she had thought it was all in her head. 
“I didn’t say I loved you okay, but yeah bitch I am in love with you, so what? You didn’t care until you had the liquor courage to make a move on me. You expect me to believe that all of tonight was genuine? From the very depths of your fuckin heart? Give me a break!” She wailed out. Sober her, would’ve never made a debacle of such a small piece of time shared between two unsuspecting lovers, and yet here she was. Pouring her heart and secrets out over the rim of Shot #8 and friends. When she had walked through the door at the beginning of the night, she wasn’t even certain she’d have the courage to talk to him. Now here they were arguing about unspoken truths, the residual of explosive feelings searing every memory of their night. 
“If I didn’t wanna be with you, sober or not I wouldn’t have even bothered.” His eyes spoke a sadness that wouldn’t be further communicated. Her trust had rampaged all over the beauty of what had been a long-lasting present moment. She finally cried, as her head hung low. It seemed to be the same story with every past lover in her life, pretty boy or not she had a habit of setting time bombs to experiences meant to stay timeless. She didn’t want to speak, out of fear that her sniffles may turn into catastrophic sobbing. 
“I guess we don’t know each other the way we had thought.” Her tears painted a treacherous history that couldn’t be further communicated. Alone in the corner hallway, encased by eccentric art filled walls and the dim lighting leading to the bathrooms something had changed. “I’m sorry.” Her shadow had reached out and he gently held her face wiping away tears. Time stood still once again for the pair, she couldn’t bare to look at him for the tears had not stopped and only seemed to downpour as he caressed her once more. 
“Don’t be. Go find your friends, I’ll be here again when the time is right.” He kissed her once softly. Then again as he held her body tightly against his own, fearful that he may never find her for time was never a friend of his. She melted into his lips, the warmth he bestowed made her yearn for strawberries under the sun and fresh out the dryer duvets she could hide under with him. Although she understood his haste to let her go, for their argument only revealed how much the other had undermined one another in the frequency of love, she seeped with regret immediately. Wishing she had been just a bit more perfect for them to have ended the night perfectly. 
As they parted she rushed in once more for one final tender kiss. She had worked up so much to enjoy him tonight, and now she was leaving him for an unforeseeable amount of time. If they both did this right, they’d meet again, but until then she’d just have to live. 
He blessed her neck and face before he walked away, unable to be the person left behind. He was not very good at goodbyes. Left in the hallway with her own guilt, she ambled her way out of the club no longer in search for her friends but just looking for a way home.

She set the file down on her desk and sat up straighter, bringing her back up off the chair as she uncrossed her legs. "Yeah, I'm fine, it's just the heat. I hate it. I'm definitely more of a cold, rainy day-type of girl, I guess."
Odd, considering you're just about the warmest soul I've ever met, he thought. Even as she talked about her distaste for the heat, she kept her voice light and her eyes kind.
