i’m catching up on tsv, i think something that eskew prod does extremely well is using horror absurdism to capture the absurd horror of capitalism. it’s clear in eskew too, but i think it’s especially fantastic in the silt verses. the casualness with which sacrifice is discussed. how red lobster has a god that has and continues to take human sacrifice, and so do cereal companies, cops, and the grueling start up that has a “fun room”. it captures EXTREMELY well how it feels to live under capitalism, that you’re constantly bombarded with horrible things, discussed cheerily in a nice tone. the way it’s simultaneously numbing, hysterical, and horrifying. i think i was especially fond of how in ep 39, protest against sacrifice was taken as radical, a propostorus, idealistic thing that’s just so SILLY it’s not even worth considering, something that feels very real to revolutionary organizing/protest irl. i also liked how despite the face, when everything gets down to it, when everything is about profit, all people come down to are bodies. all capitalism is a gaping maw, and it eats the poor and marginalized first, but doesn’t STOP eating just there. the very literalized version of this, where the profit wheel (and all that includes— war mongering, the prison industrial complex, wage labor, etc) is given a very real literal set of teeth, but the body count is the same. so the electric company has a god, and so it takes humans sacrifice. do real electric companies not have a very real human cost? overworked and underpaid labors looking to make rent, or well off comfortable employees no less likely to get the axe under profit margins, or the blood shed when colonizing in the first place, in clearing the space for the electric company to move in. is that not also a very real human sacrifice? the commercial aimed at elderly people talking about “back in my day, we would just talk about all this human sacrifice and find a compromise :)” is so bleakly hysterical, but is that not very accurate? that you can put a good face on it, but in the end what it comes down to is that you’re being sold the chance to be human fodder? that there is no glory or honor on a battlefield or in working yourself to death, just mud and shit and bodies to throw at problems. idk! i’m rambling but it’s a deeply engaging podcast.

(AKA the "Eurydice = Hades = Orpheus = Persephone" post. These four characters all simultaneously becoming one another and having already been one another in an endless cycle feels very fitting to me... it's a show about cycles -- in both the seasons and the song.) 📹: @medium-observation

I support the nuanced and varied debates against ai art from now til kingdom come, but by far my favorite one to use is extremely basic and simple and I will always always refer back to it so here you go:
Art is the expression of the human experience and you can't generate that.

At the end of the day, it just really sucks when you can't even enjoy a new release by your favorite artist because the greater internet has decided she's their acceptable outlet of misogyny and they have to comment or hate on her every move every single time.

Mirror Kira is something that can actually be so personal
#in a number of ways tbh like defo in a gay way and in terms of clone fucker rights and in terms of evil girlbossing etc etc but most of all#most of the mirror characters (to me) feel like au versions of the prime characters and obviously they ARE but they're still very much atta#attached to the prime characters y'know what i mean? like maybe not everyone but most mirror characters do feel like they basically are wha#the prime characters could've been if their lives had been different and like it's not completely out of the question for mirror kira but s#she still feels so... herself. like she's not defined by prime kira on any level. most mirror characters feel very defined by their prime c#counterparts and mirror kira... she's different. she is literally herself and no similarities will change that. she does not exist as an ex#extension of prime kira she is her own separate character. mirror kira could literally exist in the prime universe without even having to b#connected to prime kira by anything other than name and face. file off her serial numbers and you're golden & have a new and extremely comp#compelling villain. she is separate she's herself and nobody else. all the other mirror characters feel like twisted versions of the prime#characters who took a different path at some point. if there's any way to apply this to mirror kira that point would be her birth. like she#genuinely feels like they took a look at the circumstances on bajor in the mirror verse and thought about how a bajoran might grow up there#and THEN they made that bajoran kira. like i'm not saying she's nothing like prime kira but she just feels so much more developed tbh as if#they genuinely wrote out her whole life rather than just its present state y'know. it's great! i adore her#anyway#mirror kira nerys#mirrorverse#star trek deep space nine#ds9#yes most of the meat of this post is in the tags lmao idek why#original posts fresh from quark's pussy

My voice is a goldfish grown up in a too-small bowl, plucked from the pond and moved behind glass walls. I was told my voice was too old and too low. I bound it up in a higher pitch until it wasn't worth comment and now it has settled too small. It's beautiful--still-- but not in its trembles of pitch or its consonants that blur or the Rs that still rumble with a lost potential roar. My voice is beautiful in its golden light.

How do Bernard and Tim meet for the secret married fic?
the answer is kinda boring but the same way they do in canon.
the shooting still happens and i'm still deciding on whether he falls into the cult. but in this verse, henry aquista lives albeit with an incredibly down-sized territory and he offers bear a place in the gang bc he wants to take care of someone darls loved and this is the only way he knows how. everything happens like canon and bear is still lost and adrift after the shooting and you know what the military does to children who are lost and adrift. bear joins the military a mere two weeks before tim texts him for the first time in 5 years.
i just couldn't come up with another meeting for them. like what else is there to say about them? we were friends and now we're not. we went through something traumatic and now we're not close anymore. i don't know you anymore. it feels like i loved you more than you loved me. i had all and then most of you, some and now none of you, oh take me back to the night we met.
thanks for the ask! <33333

don carlos by friedrich schiller is the most wild thing i've read all year and i'm only in act 2
#this is giving me flashbacks to when i read the winter's tale and i was literally slamming my fists and emphatically shaking the book#because i just could not believe the level of DRAMA i was reading (and the craft with which it was written)#i just closed act 2 scene 3 and im like GIRRRRLLLLL#princess of eboli im rooting for you#nobody tell me if something shitty happens w her im having a good time right now#tales from diana#up until act 2 scene 2 i was getting phaedra-meets-prince hal (of the henry iv plays) vibes#but then those next two scenes were CRAAAAZY#and i should mention phaedra by racine is one of my favorite plays#schiller also has a beautiful skill at language if the translations are doing him any justice#i dont know german so im not reading the originals naturally but just. the edition i have. the verse is so beautiful#i also read his mary stuart this year and it was also great but im losing my mind at don carlos#i was intimidated by this play too though bc it's nearly 200 pages in my copy of his works! which is a p big book#but OOOHHHHH my god#im just over 1/3rd through the play and i cant imagine how it gets any wilder#but wooooow. WOWWWW#schiller might be the first non-anglophone writer ive read who ive seen called 'the shakespeare of his culture'#and i actually felt that the comparison like. did justice.#the intensity ive felt reading these 2 schiller plays are very much how i feel reading the greatest shakespeare plays#not that the greatest/most acclaimed writers of other languages ive read arent AS GREAT as shakespeare#but like. molière i'll use as an example bc i love what i've read of him.#he's the most globally well-known french writer of verse plays but that doesn't make him like shakespeare.#he's very much in his own camp of artistic genius. his craft is also very different. the resulting products are super unique#from what is typical of a shakespeare play.#schiller's style AT LEAST FROM THE TWO PLAYS IVE READ very much have the same depth of character#complexity of plot#and grace of verse.#im obsessed! king!

Knight-Captain Renauld was a veteran of the Shattering and one of the few Redmanes to have survived the Bloom of Aeonia, where Malenia the Severed unleashed the Scarlet Rot upon Starscourge Radahn and all the Caelid Wilds. In the days following the fallout it was his leadership that rallied the broken forces of Radahn's army, organizing the Redmanes and leading the first of many fiery purges as countless wriggling horrors began pulling themselves from the now befouled earth.
It wasn't until the lashing winds in the Bloom's wake no longer raged and the miasma of rot finally settled down to fester Caelid properly that a proper record could be taken of their losses... and of their enemies. When Renauld realized that only Radahn remained upon that accursed battlefield, his rage was immense, and upon his oath and that of a dozen other knights they launched a crusade to hunt down Malenia and finish what their now stricken and broken lord could not.
So it was that these knights thirteen scorched their crests in the manner that all other Redmanes would follow, and with their castle left in old Jerren's hands they hunted the wayward demigod. Across pillaged Limgrave and forsaken Liurnia they followed the wake of hated Finlay, loyal to the last, and through war-bitten Atlus Plateau did their march tread upon, and the horrors and terrors they confronted with bared steel and fiery resolve in the wake of the war to end all wars, who could say? For their tales have been lost to the waning of that most broken age, and of those vengeful thirteen only one of their number ever returned to blighted Caelid.
Rumors say that Renauld had dared to tread a measure in blasphemy itself, to scale those bitter peaks where the fire giants once echoed their own fiery fury across the mountaintops in Finlay's wake. Amongst the men-at-arms and knights is claimed that in those furious snowfields Renauld met his match, a duel at long last with Finlay staining the powdery white crimson with his blood and an eye taken for the cost of his oath unavenged... and some would whisper that he survived only from the intervention of a spirit, and the gracelessness in the eyes of the boy that returned home with him is proof of it.
In the days since his return, Renauld Whist has taken command of the remaining Redmane forces scattered across all of Caelid, and even now leads sorties against the corruption that has choked the heart of his homeland.

Despite her rough life, Sera has kind of always known there's more to her than even she can understand - And this is a feeling that only grows once she's finally able to settle down with Zack into a calmer, more peaceful life, and learns how to cope and face the things that've happened to her. The more she finds ways to cope and finally have the life she's craved and deserved, the more it feels like she's standing on a frozen lake; there's so much more under the surface, so much more to her, and yet she can't access any of it past the occasional tap on the ice and a temporary, slight bubbling up of the cold water underneath. So, so much more... Something, but she's never understood what, no matter how much she tries to find the answers to 'what makes Seraphina Fair tick?' - A question that comes up especially often in her FF7 canon, when she realizes the materia she picked up on her way to Gongaga is a summon materia for Shiva, eventually gaining the use of her aid and power, albeit at the cost of her own energy and needing serious bedrest after.
This question of what makes her 'tick' and what lies under that frozen over lake is now the same in every verse: Because Sera holds the power of one of many elemental phoenixes - In this case, the Snow Phoenix.
There's lore I wrote up a very, VERY long time ago (and need to rewrite and fine tune, now XD) for another OC of mine whose bloodline is descended from a phoenix - Essentially, the phoenix lived in in an era where gods walked the planet freely and many gained a following, with the phoenix especially enjoying a temple and a fair number of worshipers. But as humans do, war eventually broke out, and the phoenix himself was targeted for his feathers under the false claim they would give the power of rebirth and the inability to fall in battle, causing his temples to be overrun in the people's bid to get their hands on them.
The phoenix stood tall and protected his temple and the priests and priestesses within it, eventually taking human form to fight beside them, and at the end of the war, began a bloodline with his most trusted priestess that eventually, many hundreds, probably thousands of years later, to my other OC - Who, for multiple reasons, thought she was the last of the phoenixes despite being only a halfbreed.
Expanded lore I've been working on, however, adds more phoenixes; the original was a solely fire-based creature, while the others that existed among the world were of other elements - Ice, lighting, water... The original 'myth' had been passed down among the people of a pretty remote village, and the myth/legend had inevitably changed over time, like playing a game of telephone, until all mentions of other phoenixes and gods ceased to exist within it. Nobody knows there's others - But even so, Sera herself inherited the defensive, healing powers of the Snow Phoenix, while her older brother Thoma inherited some of the fire phoenix's power - Two phoenixes who were originally siblings, now echoed in Sera and her brother, linked closely together just the same as the originals.
However, despite Sera embodying the Snow Phoenix in just about every way - defensive and protective in nature, rose from her 'ashes' to keep moving forward (multiple times over her life, actually, this girl SHOULD have died several times over and managed to survive), an affinity for ice magic/abilities, ranged fighting, a healer, hiding in the form of a snow leopard/human/snow fox, etc., that's all for another post and not this one which is already longer than I intended it to be - she isn't strong enough to use it, at least not in full. The circumstances of her life/lives have made it so that while she HAS the power within her, she's too physically weak to access it, and using it in full would more than likely kill her - Though she can access incredibly tiny fractions of it when she desperately needs it, or with the aid of Zack and Thoma, her soulmate and the single blood relative/member of her birth family she has left she's super close to.
This lore also fits into just about everything I have running for her; reincarnation and rebirth is a thing across all my blogs (every verse and AU is another lifetime for the muse, with them all being connected in the end by being the same person reborn into a new life with the same soul, changed only by the timeframe and circumstances they're born into, otherwise the exact same person), and the snow phoenix follows her through all of them. In GI, it's an old power caught up in the rebirth cycle, in FF7 it was a familiar of Shiva she aided into gaining human form - Nothing like an ancient in any form, but a being connected to the goddess and the elements (who still needs materia even with her innate abilities), and so on.
This... This isn't implemented YET because I need to figure out how to rewrite the phoenix myth and organically insert it into Sera's stuff, but this is... This is just Sera. This is my girl, and it's taken me over a decade to FINALLY figure out this is what she's had lingering within her, even though I've known there's something there for a looooong time. I want to make SURE it makes sense and doesn't step on toes when I add it in, or buck anything in canon lores for any of the verses, and I really want it to work out - And since Sera is inherently fandomless/multifandom at her core, it should be easy enough to do that?
But also I've been rambling for FOREVER here so I'll cut this one here XD I'm just?? So excited to finally know what's going on with Sera in more detail, and I have SO MUCH MORE I'm working on on top of this! <3
